A Heavy Raider is a Cylon dual purpose attack and transport spacecraft, analogous to the Colonial's Raptor vehicle. It is nicknamed a "turkey" by the surviving Colonial Fleet's military units Maelstrom.

Design
A Heavy Raider is a Cylon duel purpose attack and transport spacecraft, nicknamed "turkey" by the Fleet's military units (Maelstrom).
The Heavy Raider shares many design similarities with the rest of the Cylon fleet, featuring an autonomous bio-mechanical design. However, this craft is also easily piloted by Centurions or Humanoid Cylons if needed. The Heavy Raider has no windows, and any Cylon piloting the craft must rely on telemetry delivered to a Datastream inside the craft for operation The Farm.

The main armament of the Heavy Raider seems to consist of a barbette of six cannons mounted under the cockpit area of the vehicle (as seen here). These cannons are capable of an extremely high rate of fire (Scattered). The Raiders are also capable of launching missiles.

Not much is yet known about this craft. The Heavy Raider is likely autonomous, as evidenced by the Raider-style head/canopy. While Centurions have been seen exiting Heavy Raiders, there is no proof that they pilot it.

The first Heavy Raider is seen as part of a Cylon search party looking for Karl "Helo" Agathon and Sharon Agathon née Valerii on Cylon-occupied Caprica (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down). Further sightings in Season 1 are in "Colonial Day" with one craft landing near Agathon and Valerii, and in space over Caprica in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II".

Significant appearances
Heavy Raiders typically carries two tri-barreled automatic cannons capable of high rates of fire. These are further augmented with ship-to-ship missiles, which can be easily connected to the Raider's DRADIS dish and converted into anti-aircraft batteries for use on a planetary surface Fragged.
A Heavy Raider with a boarding party of five Centurions crash-lands into Galactica's unused starboard flight pod (Scattered).

Typically, Heavy Raiders are tough targets, being able to withstand severe punishment, including crash landings Fragged.

After shooting down a Colonial scouting party over Kobol, a force of five Centurions lands near the crash site of Raptor 1 in a Heavy Raider. They proceed to dismantle its missile launcher and DRADIS assembly in an attempt to build a surface-to-air missile battery, intending to shoot down any search and rescue parties that Galactica sends to find the survivors (Fragged).

History
The Heavy Raider is conclusively proven to be a troop transport in "The Farm" when Sharon Agathon née Valerii commandeers one and uses it to evacuate the Caprica Resistance after they rescue Kara "Starbuck" Thrace from a Cylon hybrid "farm." That captured Heavy Raider is eventually used to jump to Kobol where Thrace, Agathon and Valerii finally hook up with the rest of the Fleet.
The Heavy Raider was developed sometime during the forty year Cylon exile from Colonial contact, and were used in combat during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Heavy Raiders delivered Centurions to the surface of Caprica and likely other Colonies as the start of the ground invasion The Plan. After the Fall, they continued to serve as troop transports for Centurions boarding the battlestars Pegasus and Galactica Scattered and entering battle on the Algae planet The Eye of Jupiter. The Cylons deployed one for every ten or so autonomous Raiders when attacking space-based targets Resurrection Ship, Part I. They were also used to suppress human resistance fighters on the ground during the Cylon occupation of New Caprica Occupation.

Humans and their allies were able to take advantage of Heavy Raiders. With the help of a rogue Number Eight Cylon, the Caprica Resistance stole a Heavy Raider to rescue Starbuck from a Cylon farm, evacuate the resistance fighters to their base, and allow Thrace, the Eight, and Karl Agathon to jump to Kobol and reunite with Laura Roslin's faction (TRS: "The Farm". Home, Part I"). With the help of the same Eight, Thrace was later able to use the navigational computer of the Heavy Raider to jump a fleet of Raptors to Caprica to rescue the remaining Caprica Resistance members (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I," Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II"). Heavy Raiders tow Vipers into battle in order to catch Cavil's faction off-guard during the Battle of the Resurrection Hub The Hub. Admiral William Adama reluctantly authorizes a Heavy Raider reconnaissance mission to the Colony as part of an attempt to rescue the kidnapped Hera Agathon Islanded in a Stream of Stars.
The Cylon attack fleet in "Flight of the Phoenix" includes a large amount of Heavy Raiders, which could indicate a planned boarding operation or merely the need for additional heavy firepower.

Heavy Raiders also served as transports for non-combatants Occupation.
Months later, Felix Gaeta reveals that with Valerii's cooperation they are able to interface the navigational system of a captured Heavy Raider with a Raptor's FTL drive, making it capable of farther and more accurate jumps than before (beyond Colonial FTL's Red Line limit) with significantly faster calculations (as previously determined from a captured Cylon Raider). A search and rescue sortie is able to return to Caprica in less than ten jumps and successfully evacuate the Caprica resistance (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I).

On New Caprica, Galen Tyrol and Samuel Anders manage to blow up a landing pad after a Heavy Raider consisting of various humanoid Cylons lands (Occupation).

After New Caprica, Thrace believes she sees a Heavy Raider in the atmosphere of a nearby gas giant, although no one else can see it. Its appearance may somehow relate to her alleged destiny (Maelstrom).

More than two months after her miraculous return at the Ionian nebula, during the last days of her command of Demetrius, she and Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza come across a heavily damaged Heavy Raider with the copy of Leoben Conoy who imprisoned her on New Caprica (The Road Less Traveled).

*According to Eric Chu, Richard Livingston designed the Heavy Raider.

*As of "Razor," a new retconned exterior design for the Heavy Raider is in use. It is virtually identical to the previous incarnation save for a new head canopy—which matches that of the retconned standard Raider—and the addition of missile launcher (capable of propelling two missiles) superior to the forward battery.
