While Vipers are primarily used for reconnaissance patrols, ''Galactica'' also possesses unmanned probes, including those employing [[stealth probe|stealth]] {{comics|apocalypse|1}}.

As a military ship, ''Galactica'' features a {{inline|detention chamber}} capable of imprisoning {{alt|Centurion|TOS-DE}}s for interrogation, equipped with a [[gamma frequency field]] generator to cut off the enemy from access to the Cylon's network. The chamber is outfitted with a restraining chair capable of holding a typical [[Mark V Centurion]].

A sole survivor from a Centurion stealth team detached to [[Burania]] is imprisoned in the detention chamber following a failed incursion into ''Galactica''{{'|s}} [[science deck]], itself later destroyed &mdash; along with most of the chamber &mdash; after a test of the recovered [[nano-cybrid]] {{comics|apocalypse|1}}.

=== The Thousand-Yahren War ===

As one of the many battlestars active during the [[Thousand-Yahren War]], it saw action during multiple engagements, including the [[Hasari Routs]] and the [[Second Siege of the Cosmora Archipelago]] {{comics|apocalypse|1}}.

By {{alt|7335}}, {{alt|Adama|TOS}} commands ''Galactica'', with his eldest son and daughter, {{alt|Apollo|TOS}} and {{alt|Athena|TOS}} respectively, serving aboard. {{alt|Boomer|TOS}}, {{alt|Jolly|TOS}} and {{alt|Starbuck|TOS-DE}} would later serve aboard the ship following their graduation in 7335 {{comics|starbuck|1}}.

=== Fleeing the Cylon Tyranny ===

Much of ''Galactica''{{'|s}} operational history is refocused around shepherding its {{alt|the Fleet|TOS-DE|rag-tag, fugitive fleet}} from Cylons with strategically defensive and evasive postures, instead of offensive military operations. This is tested in the weeks following the exodus, particularly when {{Alt|Adama|TOS-DE}} dispatches his finest warriors to a hazardous mission to [[Maytoria]] that results in immediate failure; in other circumstances, Adama would have engaged in an offensive operation to recover his pilots, but is overruled by the greater mission of shepherding the human race {{comics|vol1|1}}.

The events of Maytoria result in the [[Capture of Galactica|first post-Cylon incursion of ''Galactica'']] that, while ultimately thwarted, result in the deaths of numerous members of ''Galactica''<nowiki/>'s crew {{comics|vol1|5}}.

Following the [[Battle at Galaxy's Edge]], the Fleet happens across the [[Canopus wormhole]], a potential shortcut to the fabled {{alt|Earth|TOS-DE}}. On the other side of this wormhole is a lone Cylon planet, consisting of a [[Cylon mainframe]] in a city known as [[Tessida]]. In order to make good on their escape from the Cylon tyranny, Adama makes use of ''Galactica''{{'|s}} formidable offensive potential to stage an attack against this installation, utilizing its rarely-used [[lightspeed]] potential in order to surprise the Cylons while Vipers bomb the city with weaponized missiles, whose warheads are outfitted with a destructive and pervasive [[nano-cybrid]] {{comics|apocalypse|3}}&mdash;{{comics|apocalypse|4|short=y}}.

==A "Second" ''Galactica''==

''{{inlineref|Galactica}}'' was never commissioned in the [[alternate reality]] {{comics|vol2|3}}, as the divergent alternate reality's creation sprung from an overloaded [[temporal battery]], thus removing ''Galactica'' from all existence in a [[temporal storm]] that only {{alt|Apollo|TOS}} and {{alt|Starbuck|TOS-DE}} witness {{comics|vol2|1}}.

However, ''Galactica'' from the primary reality was transported&mdash;sans crew&mdash;into the alternate reality, becoming an incongruous element. It is discovered by pirates lead by the privateer {{alt-r|Starbuck}}, who claim it as their own. Aboard her, Starbuck's crew of scientists and technicians acquire Cylon components, including an [[Imperious Leader]], devising a variety of anti-Cylon technologies. 

Such discoveries include the defensive [[sensor shield]], rendering ''Galactica'' invisible to Cylon scanning technologies {{comics|vol2|4}}. 

''Galactica'' becomes the last known battlestar that [[Baltifer]] hunts for and nearly succeeds in finding, resulting in the [[Battle of Cache]]. After the temporally displaced Starbuck influences his alternate, ''Galactica'' becomes the lynchpin that allows not only the [[Colonial Resistance]] to seize its first decisive victory, but to repair history by saving ''itself'' from the [[Nebula Ambush]] {{comics|vol2|5}}.
