'''Defensive shields''' are physical protective barriers that enclose around the viewing screen and possibly the exterior of [[Core command]] on a [[Battlestar (TOS)|battlestar]].

Commander {{TOS|Adama}} orders activation of these shields as they fight off the first waves of a [[Cylons (TOS)|Cylon]] [[Raider (TOS)|Raider]] attack on ''{{TOS|Galactica}}'' and her sister battlestars in the opening salvos of the ill-fated [[Battle of Cimtar]] {{OS|Saga of a Star World}}. Adama's commands to activate and deactivate the shield are "Positive shields" and "Negative shields," respectively.

Commander [[Cain (TOS)|Cain]] also has the shields activated once the [[basestar (TOS)|basestars]] begin hitting ''{{TOS|Pegasus}}'' during the [[Battle of Gamoray]].  He simply orders "shield," which corresponds to the button that activates the barriers {{OS|The Living Legend, Part II}}.

== Electronic defense shields ==

Electronic defense shields are a defensive capability of ''{{TOS|Pegasus}}''. In preparation for a direct assault on three [[basestar (TOS)|basestars]], [[Cain (TOS)|Commander Cain]] orders "electronic defense shields to maximum power". No visible manifestation of this countermeasure is shown onscreen {{OS|The Living Legend, Part II}}.

When dealing with the nuclear missiles launched by the [[Eastern Alliance]] meant to destroy the [[Nationalists]] and [[Terra]] itself, {{TOS|Adama}} issues an order to "stand by force shields" {{OS|Experiment in Terra}}.
