The '''Cylon freighter''' (or '''Cylon tanker''') is an unarmed ship used throughout the [[Cylons (TOS)|Cylon]] sphere of influence to transport [[tylium (TOS)|fuel]] and other goods. Cylon fuel tankers may be used to support an offensive operation, as demonstrated at the [[Battle of Cimtar]]. Cylon fuel tankers allow the fighters to deploy far in excess of the ranges they are normally capable of without [[Basestar (TOS)|basestar]] support. This frees the basestars to attack [[The Twelve Colonies of Man|the Colonies]] while the fighters disposed of the [[Battlestar (TOS)|battlestars]] at [[Cimtar]] {{OS|Saga of a Star World}}.

{{TOS|Viper}}s from both ''{{TOS|Galactica}}'' and [[Pegasus (TOS)|''Pegagus'']] launch a mission in an attempt to capture Cylon freighters in order to resupply the fleet. The plan is foiled when [[Cain (TOS)|Commander Cain]] intentionally destroys the freighters in order to force {{TOS|Adama}} into a position where he needed to attack [[Gamoray]] {{OS|The Living Legend, Part I}}.

Following Apollo's report, both Colonel {{alt|Tigh|TOS}} and Commander {{alt|Adama|TOS}} properly surmise that the tankers were deployed to refuel the Raiders, given that the {{alt|basestar|TOS}}s were deployed against the [[Twelve Colonies of Man]] ({{comics|marvel|1}}).
