:''MEMORIAL Part 1! 2013 marks the 35th anniversary of the [[Original Series|original ''Battlestar Galactica'' TV series]] and to celebrate Dynamite is launching a brand new series, written by cosmic supremos, [[Dan Abnett]] & [[Andy Lanning]] (''Legion, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy'')! Set in classic BSG continuity, this series celebrates 35 years of epic space opera when, following a surprise {{alt|Cylons|TOS|Cylon}} attack, {{alt|Adama|TOS}} and the crew of the ''{{alt|Galactica|TOS}}'' are forced to deploy Dr {{alt|Zee}}'s experimental [[temporal weapon]]s with unexpected results that leave {{alt|Apollo|TOS}} and {{alt|Starbuck|TOS}} lost in time and space in an alternate reality with no ''Galactica'' and no way of returning home!''<ref>{{cite_web|url=https://www.dynamite.com/htmlfiles/viewProduct.html?PRO=C72513020462200111|title=Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #1|date=|accessdate=05 April 2020|last=|first=|format=|language=}}</ref>
:''The ''{{alt|Galactica|TOS}}''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> search for sanctuary takes them beyond the limits of known reality and into a cosmic mystery where the hunters become the hunted, ruin and despair dot the skies, and {{alt|Adama|TOS}} goes where friend and family can't follow. [[Cullen Bunn]] (''Sinestro Corps, The Sixth Gun, Deadpool'' & ''The Mercs for Money'') and [[Alex Sanchez]] (''Mad Max: Ride, 30 Days Of Night: Spreading the Disease, Katana)'' invite you on a journey unlike any in the annals of ''[[TOS|Battlestar Galactica]]''!''<ref>{{cite_web|url=https://www.dynamite.com/htmlfiles/viewProduct.html?PRO=C72513025064301011|title=Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 3 #1|date=|accessdate=24 March 2020|last=|first=|format=|language=}}</ref>

==Plot==
==Plot==

* In {{alt|Adama|TOS}}'s sleep, a recurring nightmare where he relives the death of {{alt|Zac}}, the [[Battle of Cimtar]], and his failure to save his wife, {{alt|Ila}}, re-runs in his mind. The dream differs, as Ila is executed in front of him by {{alt|Centurion|TOS}}s and Adama himself is forced to watch. He himself begs for death with tearful eyes. He awakens as the Centurion follows through with that threat, drenched in the sweat of his own night terrors.
* A [[black hole]] materializes out of nowhere, trapping ''{{alt|Galactica|TOS}}'' and its {{alt|The Fleet|TOS}}. Unable to escape, Adama orders the Fleet to fly directly into the singularity.
* Adama views a hologram of his family, from which only three remain: himself, his daughter {{alt|Athena|TOS}} and his oldest son, {{alt|Apollo|TOS}}.
* In transit, a tanker explodes, knocking Adama unconscious and causing damage to ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> control center.
* From a ceremonial dais, Adama leads a remembrance that recalls the day of the destruction of {{alt|Twelve Colonies of Man||their Colonies}}, which is broadcast throughout {{alt|The Fleet|TOS}}.
* Colonel {{alt|Tigh|TOS}} communicates to the Fleet following its transit through the black hole, reassuring its members that despite the damages and casualties that they will get through their current predicament.
* Finishing his sentiments, Adama overhears a conversation between Apollo, {{alt|Starbuck|TOS}} and Athena as Apollo voices his wish that Zac should be with them that day. Adama consoles his son, reminding him that the Cylons were to blame for Zac's death, and not Apollo.
* {{alt|Apollo|TOS}} visits the [[life center]] where Doctor {{alt|Salik}} and {{alt|Cassiopeia}} tend to Adama. Salik informs Apollo that Adama has suffered a severe concussion, which has been effectively treated; Salik remains puzzled as to why Adama remains comatose for over 20 [[centar]]s, noting that Adama's brain activity is well into the conscious range.
* A klaxon sounds, alerting them to an inbound {{alt|Cylons|TOS|Cylon}} fleet consisting of multiple {{alt|basestar|TOS}}s, coming out of the very same nebula that the Fleet had been using as a hiding place.

* On [[Core Command|the bridge]], Adama orders a launch of all {{alt|Viper|TOS}} and has ''{{alt|Galactica|TOS}}'' turn to face their foe, so as to buy the civilian ships the time needed to entrench themselves further into the safety of the nebula.
=== Adama ===
* {{alt|Raider|TOS}}s begin their suicide runs on ''Galactica'', causing extreme damage to the {{alt|battlestar|TOS}}'s main engineering sections.

* Their choices are slim: use the remaining power to flee the engagement and lose its shields, or stay a sitting target with power diverted to its shields and weapons.
* In a dream state, Adama finds himself in his quarters, and is summoned by a voice noting that his "presence is required."
* On a holo screen, Doctor {{alt|Wilker}} conveys an urgent request from his protege, {{alt|Zee}}, who advocates the use of [[temporal weapon]]s he has been developing. Adama harshly rebukes the plan due to their forbidden nature, but reneges as the battlestar further succumbs to its assailant's attacks.
* Adama then finds himself on the planet that {{alt|Baltar|TOS}} was left upon, where "Baltar" explains that "we are, all of us, being summoned." As Adama justifies his decision to maroon Baltar in a humane manner despite Baltar's very betrayal of the human race, "Baltar" replies that he "still found hell" in Adama's compassionate act.
* In the [[launch bay]], Apollo and Starbuck's Vipers are pulled from their {{TOS|launch tube}}s. Zee and Wilker arrive and the Warriors are introduced to two [[Temporal Viper|modified Vipers]], outfitted with prototypes of Zee's [[temporal warper]] weapons, much to the Warriors apprehension.
* Adama finds himself amongst {{alt|Cylons|TOS}} in a {{alt|basestar|TOS}} throne room, with "Baltar" berating him for bringing a "human evil" into their midst.
* Instructing them quickly on their limitations and use, Apollo and Starbuck launch in Zee's new starfighters. Much to Zee's chagrin, they use the warpers against a few of the Raiders in their sights; the targets are displaced from existence. Zee directs them to attack the basestars, in the hope that their removal from the timeline would ensure their current attack never took place.
* Adama leaves and finds himself on ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> [[Core Command]], reliving the [[Battle of Cimtar|opening attack at Cimtar]] and asks a befuddled Tigh if they can stop it from happening again.
* On the bridge, Adama shares his concerns with Colonel {{alt|Tigh|TOS}} over the deployment of temporal weapons. While discussing it, a Cylon Raider makes its devastating kamikaze strike, destabilizing the [[temporal battery]] and removing ''Galactica'', its other Viper pilots, and their Cylon attackers from the space that surrounds them.

* Left alone are Apollo and Starbuck, whose ships have permitted them to make it through the temporal shift unscathed.
=== Patrol ===

* Meanwhile, Apollo leads {{alt|Starbuck|TOS}}, {{alt|Boomer|TOS}} and {{alt|Sheba}} on a reconnaissance of the new realm they have been deposited into. After consoling a worried Apollo about his father, Sheba detects [[Iblis' planet|a planet]], thickly-ringed with debris of derelicts. Boomer compares the planet to another one in the [[Hovian]] sector, itself featuring a unique magnetic field attracting derelict vessels in the same way.
* The Viper patrol makes planet fall, and the [[Warrior]]s encounter a large group of marooned survivors who desire to celebrate the blessings "to those who fell from the heavens and lived."
* Sheba discovers a large impact crater nearby; Starbuck elects to proceed down to its center, wanting to determine what kind of ship had made it. Apollo elects to ask their welcoming committee for information before climbing down a bottomless pit.

=== Lucifer's Pursuit ===

* At the exit to the singularity, {{alt|Lucifer}}'s lone {{alt|basestar|TOS}} enters the realm, discovering intense interference and signs of destroyed Colonial vessels from the Fleet.
* Lucifer orders squadrons to scout ahead, with plans to achieve what the Cylon Empire has failed to do thus far: destroy the remaining humans.
* In this endeavor, they encounter an attacking force... that force is [[Meclon|also Cylon]].

=== Timeline ===
=== Timeline ===

* The comic deliberately uses Adama's facial hair as a "hallway between full beard of ''[[Galactica 1980|1980]]'' and clean shaven BSG,"<ref name="memorial-168">{{cite_book|last=|first=|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|year=2013|title=Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 1 - Memorial|publisher=Dynamite Entertainment|pages=168|location=|id=}}</ref> further noting that they've been "musing the years they've been forced to roam the galaxy, forever hunted by the relentless, merciless {{alt|Cylons|TOS}}."<ref name="memorial-168"/>
* The events of this comic take place after the [[Battle at Galaxy's Edge]] depicted in "{{TOS|The Hand of God}}."
* Furthermore, the events of this comic take place a [[yahrens|yahren]]<ref name="memorial-168"/> after the [[Battle at Galaxy's Edge]] depicted in "{{TOS|The Hand of God}}."
<!--=== Incongruences === -->

=== Nods ===
=== Nods ===

* The inclusion of {{alt|Zee}}, based on [[Zee|a character]] from ''[[Galactica 1980]]'', and his temporal weapons are nods to the [[time warp synthesizer]] and that angelic wunderkind's stewardship of the "Galacticans," as the survivors had come to identify themselves by that juncture in the story.
* The planet happened across by the Colonials is a nod to the [[red planet]] from "[[War of the Gods]]."
* This issue launches the "action figure" variant covers by [[Michael Adams]] that would be offered throughout this series, as well as {{comics|vs}}, which visually harken back to the 1978-79 C.E. [[Mattel]] action figure line.
* "In the beginning" is a reference to the creation myth depicted in the [[w:Book of Genesis|Book of Genesis]].

=== Miscellany ===
=== Miscellany ===

* The use of holographic technology aboard ''{{alt|Galactica|TOS}}'' is different than what has been seen in the [[Original Series]], and is a liberty used to contemporize ''Galactica'' universe to current science fiction "technologies" seen in other series.
* While {{alt|Boxey|TOS}} and {{alt|Muffit}} are seen, they do not participate in this tale.
* While {{alt|Boxey|TOS}}, {{alt|Muffit}}, {{alt|Sheba}}, and {{alt|Boomer|TOS}} are briefly present in this issue for Adama's speech during the memorial ceremony, they don't appear again for the rest of this particular five-issue story arc.

==Analysis==
==Analysis==

* {{alt|Adama}} suffers from [[w:posttraumatic stress disorder|posttraumatic stress disorder]] from the events relating to and following the [[Battle of Cimtar]], including the loss of his home and loved ones, and the pressures of commanding a caravan of survivors for a world that may very well be the myth of "half drunken star voyagers," as {{TOS|Baltar}} ascribes them to be in "[[Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II]]." This is certainly not a new development, as Adama battled these demons briefly in "[[Saga of a Star World]]," asking {{TOS|Athena}} to "take this burden from me" following their arrival at [[Carillon]].
* The use of a "[[black hole]]" to transport {{alt|The Fleet|TOS}} to another universe aligns with some theoretical concepts relating to either charged [[w:Reissner–Nordström metric|Reissner-Nordström]] or rotating [[w:Kerr metric|Kerr]] black holes.
* {{alt|Apollo|TOS}} continues to blame himself for the loss of {{alt|Zac}}, the first casualty leading into the holocaust. Despite Adama's own demons, he consoles his son and assures him that the Cylons were wholly at fault.
* The use of a singularity to transport the Fleet elsewhere (also planned by {{alt|Iblis}}) is a trope that appears again in the {{comics|vs}} series.
* The inclusion of Doctor Zee, a character from ''[[Galactica 1980]]'' whose presence is tied with {{1980|Starbuck}}'s separation from the Fleet in "[[The Return of Starbuck]]," is a unique entity spliced from the ''1980'' canon. His presence and Starbuck's in the same place brings to question {{alt|Zee||this iteration's backstory}}, and how closely it hues to its canonical inspiration.
* Adama being tortured by visions of his past is a trope also visited previously in the Berkley novel, ''[[The Nightmare Machine]]'', as well as prior to that in ''[[The Memory Machine]]''—a story polot line that factors into a larger part of [[Marvel Comics]]' 1978-79 run.
* The introduction of [[temporal weapon]]s creates many great paradoxical far-reaching issues. Superficially speaking, their presence brings to question the possibility of deploying the weapon against the heart of the [[Cylon Empire]] itself, or to use it against [[Iblis|the enemy who helped]] in their creation. Further, if one could remove an entire ship, one could also use the weapon on a smaller scale, such as against a singular person, to displace them and their actions from existence.
* {{alt|Lucifer}}'s pursuit of power continues unabated, even more intensely without the influence of his human mentor, {{alt|Baltar|TOS}}. This is in keeping with Lucifer's actions and motives in "[[Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II]]."
* The denizens of the Fleet still languish in discomforting and depressing conditions, and their plight is glossed over in this issue. The socio-political implications are typically glossed over, and this issue is no different.

==Noteworthy Dialogue==
==Noteworthy Dialogue==

* ''Following the initial wave of the Cylons' overwhelming offensive, ''Galactica''{{'|s}} choices are summarized by a tech:''
* '''"Baltar"''': Say what you will about the {{alt|Cylons|TOS}}, but they have no demons. No devils. Save for {{alt|Iblis||those who created them}}! In that way, they are not so different {{alt|Adama|TOS|from you}}.
*: '''Tech:''' We're hit ''hard''! Tell the commander he has a ''choice''... use power to flee but ''lose'' the shields, or stay put and ''keep'' power to the shield and weapons systems. ''Surely'' we have to draw the Cylons' fire and buy the Fleet time to escape...

* ''After exiting the [[black hole]], {{alt|Lucifer}} receives word that a few smaller ships from {{alt|The Fleet|TOS}} were destroyed:''

: '''Lucifer''': {{alt|Galactica|TOS|That ship}}—and the humans it houses—is far too annoying to be destroyed so easily. And so... here we are... pursuing our enemy through a [[black hole]]... into the heart of unknown space. But the Colonials will not hide for long. Dispatch scouts at once.
: '''Centurion''': [[By your command]].
: '''Lucifer''': Here... in uncharted territory... I will do what the [[Cylon Empire]] has failed to do thus far. I—{{alt|Imperious Leader||above all}}—will be a Cylon like no ''other''.

* ''{{alt|Apollo|TOS}} shares his thoughts with {{alt|Wilker}} regarding {{alt|Zee}}:''
*: '''Apollo:''' I know you think ''highly'' of Zee, Doctor, but is he ''really''... how can I put this...?
*: '''Wilker:''' Zee is a ''strange'' being, Apollo, an old mind in a young body, and he is ''thoroughly'' infuriating. But, in this instance, I believe he may have [[temporal warpers|the ''only'' advantage]] that may save us.
