Battlestar Wiki:Image tagging policy

This page is an official policy of Battlestar Wiki. This policy is considered by the community and its leadership to be the status quo of Battlestar Wiki and is not to be countermanded or ignored, though changes to it can be discussed on the appropriate talk page. This policy was implemented on 14 April 2005.

The image tagging policy deals with the proper identification, categorization and tagging of photos used in the wiki. For the policy on proper image use on this wiki, click here.

Rationale

In order to properly identify images, as well as to offer the proper credit, the images need to be tagged. This page covers how to tag a photo.

Tags

Fair use

Since Battlestar Wiki doesn't actually own the rights to Battlestar Galactica, these images are used under the fair use clause of United States copyright law. Thus all these tags reflect this.

• {{promo}} -- Used for promotional photos released by Universal/Sci-Fi. Images are placed under Category:Promotional images.
• {{screencap}} -- Used to identify a generic screen cap. All images in this category are placed under Category:Screen captures.
  • {{iTunes download screencap}} -- Used to identify a screen cap from the iTunes downloadable versions. All images are placed under Category:iTunes download screen captures.
  • {{NTSC broadcast screencap}} -- All images are placed under Category:NTSC broadcast screen captures (RDM)
  • {{PAL broadcast screencap}} -- All images are placed under Category:PAL broadcast screen captures (RDM)
  • {{HD-screencap}} -- Used to identify captures from DVD and HDTV broadcast sources. All images are placed under Category:HD screen captures. This category has been deprecated in favor of the following:
    • {{NTSC DVD screencap}} -- All images are placed under Category:NTSC DVD screen captures (RDM)
    • {{PAL DVD screencap}} -- All images are placed under Category:PAL DVD screen captures (RDM)
    • {{HDTV broadcast screencap}} -- All images are placed under Category:HDTV broadcast screen captures (RDM)
• {{game screencap}} -- Used to identify game screen captures. All images are placed under Category:Game screen captures.
• {{cover art}} -- Used for cover art for any printed media. Images tagged with this are placed under Category:Cover art images.
• {{zoic}} -- Used for Zoic released photographs and cut-aways. Images tagged with this are placed under Category:Zoic images.

Creative Commons & Public Domain

Any images licensed under a copyleft license, namely Creative Commons, or released into the public domain should use these tags.

• {{CC}} -- An image released under a Creative Commons license. You must specify which license by adding |license= after "CC", then typing in the license name (ex: {{CC|license=Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike}}). Images tagged with this are placed under the Category:Creative Commons images.
• {{PD}} -- An image released into the public domain. Images tagged with this are placed under the Category:Public domain images.

Other uses

• {{user image}} - Used exclusively for photos used in the User namespace, namely on user's pages. These images may be licensed under any license, as so long as the copyright owner is identified. Images are placed under Category:User images.
• {{BW image}} - Used exclusively for Battlestar Wiki images. These are images released under the same license as Battlestar Wiki's articles. Images are placed under Category:Battlestar Wiki images.

For the unknown

Any photos tagged with these tags may be speedily deleted after five (5) days of being tagged, as so long as the uploader or uploaders have been notified.

• {{no copyright}} - For images without any copyright information. Placed under Category:Images with unknown copyright.
