This article is really just information from various sources that made me come to the conclusion that the Colonial Military ranks are bases on those of the British Military.

--Cdr Ares 04:42, 11 December 2008 (UTC)I am a fan of the classic Battlestar Galactica. As i have grown older i listened to the communications regarding the military ranks. I have never heard any reference to USAF ranks. What i have heard is references to British military rank. Here are some examples of the military rank.Reply

ENLISTED RANKS: 1. In the episode: The man with nine lives the warrior in charge of the new recruits was a corporal.

2. Jolly was a sergeant in the early episodes.

3. In the episode where it was said Omega was listed as flight Sergeant I thought it said he was a Staff-Sergeant.

As for the ranks of Flight-Sergeant i believe this rank was given to enlisted sergeants who were pilots. The same title was given to Flight-Corporals. I believe Apollo's late wife was a Flight Corporal.

OFFICER RANKS: Cadet Cree

Zac who was Apollo's brother Zac was an Ensign.

Ensign Greenbean was mentioned in the series. I never once heard the rank LT-2nd-Class mentioned.

Starbuck was mentioned as being a Lieutenant-First-Class in the series.

Then you have Apollo who was a Captain.

In one of the BSG books i read online i read about the senior bridge officer being a major.

The first officer aboard the Pegusas had to be a LT-Colonel. Why do i say this? Simple...When Cain was relieved of his command Tigh was told to take the bridge. The first officer also always called Tigh sir.

Tigh was a full Colonel

In Richard Hatches series Athena was given the rank of LT-Commander.

Commander Cain

Fleet Commander Adama

Colonial Ranks: British Ranks: Colonial Enlisted Pilots: Warrior Private Lance-Corporal Lance-Corporal Flight-Cadet Corporal Corporal Flight-Corporal Sergeant Sergeant Flight-Sergeant Staff-Sergeant Staff-Sergeant

Warrant-Officers (?) Warrant-Officer

Cadet Cadet

Ensign 2nd-Lt Lieutenant-1st-Class 1st-Lt Captain Captain Major Major Lt-Colonel Lt-Colonel Colonel Colonel

The only naval ranks i know of are the ranks of Adama, Cain and Kronus. This is how i believe the ranks correspond with the British Military (Navy)

THE UNIFORMS:

Just the mention of the ranks is not my only evidence. The way the uniforms are set up are also in a British fashion. In the British Army the Senior Officers such as Majors, Lt-Colonels and above all wore Blue uniforms as did their aid-de-camps and Warrant-Officers. The Movie "Zulu Dawn" you can see the use of uniforms.

This is seen in the classic series. Adama, Tigh, Tollen (Living Legend) who are all bridge officers all wear blue uniforms as does Athena who is a bridge officer. There were also men in blue uniforms who did not have the silver rings on their uniforms. I believe these warriors may be Warrant Officers. You can see the men in "The Living Legend".

This is still not the only reason why i believe the ranks are British. I did a study of the unit sizes and officers that command them. Here is what i came up with. There is no equivilant to modern air units that i could see based on my studies. There was a resemblance to the British.

I have several books on the British Military and their Colonies. The unit that fits Galactica's unit and officer in command is the Squadron. In my reference book by Osprey on the British forces the Squadron was 75 men strong and commanded by a Captain.

I looked at the "Battlestar Galactica Technical Manual" and looked at the number of troops. Based on my studies into the subject i found that the number of troops aboard a battlestar which is 510 is comprised of 4 companies if they are based on british companies.

This information combined together is how i came to the conclusion that the Colonial ranks are British.
