After the destruction of the {{TOS-RH|Twelve Colonies of Man}} in a devastating genocidal attack on the Colonial worlds in {{TOS-RH|7342}}, Commander {{TOS-RH|Adama}} orders all survivors to find what operational ships remain on their shattered worlds and fly them towards [[Battlestar (TOS)|battlestar]] ''{{TOS-RH|Galactica}}'', the sole surviving battlestar after her sister warships are also [[Battle of Cimtar|destroyed]] in the {{TOS|Cylons}}' two-prong attack. With nowhere else to call home, Adama decrees that the remnants of humanity will search for the {{TOS|Thirteenth Tribe}} on a planet called {{TOS|Earth}}.

Under the guardianship of ''Galactica'', '''the Fleet''' initially comprises of 220 civilian ships<ref name="STG43">{{cite book/RH|1|43}}</ref>. With the exception of ''Galactica'', the ships are not capable of [[lightspeed]] flight. The Fleet's overall speed is limited to that of the slowest ship within the group. As all ships in the Fleet were filled to (or over) capacity, removing the slower ships from the caravan is not an option.

Traffic within the Fleet is possible via pre-plotted courses issued by navigational computers, as the Fleet's [[drag-field]] allows for intra-fleet travel via smaller ships, shuttles, Vipers, and the like<ref name="STG131">{{cite book/RH|1|131}}</ref>.

As to the Fleet's citizenry, the rules of [[martial law]] apply thus making crimes extremely rare. Notably, a span of 18 {{TOS-RH|yahren}} occurs between murders, that of [[Ortega]] in {{TOS-RH|7342}} and [[Puck|an unidentifiable individual]] aboard ''[[Agro-3]]'' in {{TOS-RH|7360}}<ref name="STG73">{{cite book/RH|1|73}}</ref> {{RH|Armageddon}}.

== Notable Events ==

Following the [[Battle at Galaxy's Edge]] in {{TOS-RH|7342}}, the Fleet is able to make a far flung exodus—having slipped the surly bonds of their home galaxy, {{TOS|Cyrannus}} [[The Long Patrol|early on]]—and beyond {{OS|The Hand of God}}.

In {{TOS-RH|7352}}, the Fleet discovers a rich planetoid that allows them to shore up their rag-tag, fugitive caravan. During this time, new [[Agro Ship]]s are built, as other crafts are repurposed for military use<ref name="STG81">{{Cite book/RH|1|81}}</ref>. The old freighter is retrofitted and re-christened ''{{TOS-RH|Hephaestus}}'', becoming one of the most valued ships in the Fleet where Vipers are rebuilt and constructed, including new Azure-class and Scarlet-class models<ref name="STG240">{{cite book/RH|1|240}}</ref>. By {{TOS-RH|7354}}, the Cylons had seemingly gone absent, leaving the Fleet to its own devices<ref name="STG7">{{cite book/RH|1|7}}</ref>.

By {{TOS-RH|7360}}, the Fleet's size held steady at 179 ships<ref name="STG43"/>. However, control of the Fleet is contested between various factions in the wake of Adama's death, from the [[Gemon Matriarchs]] who back {{TOS-RH|Athena}} to Ambassador [[Puck]] "{{TOS-RH|Iblis|himself}}," resulting in acts of various degrees of civil disobedience and, in some extreme cases, sedition. The ''{{TOS-RH|Icarus}}'' prison barge at one point slips away from the Fleet when prisoners wrest control of the vessel, though it is later surrendered to the Quorum by [[Gar'Tokk]] of the [[Borellian Nomen]]<ref name="STG262">{{cite book/RH|1|262}}</ref>. Work stoppages and protests occur aboard several vessels, including ''{{TOS|Rising Star}}'', ''[[Celestra (TOS)|Celestra]]'', ''[[Delphi]]'', ''[[Adena]]'', and ''[[Scorpius Ascendant]]'', with the latter briefly declaring independence from the Fleet<ref name="STG161">{{cite book/RH|1|161}}</ref><ref name="STG224">{{cite book/RH|1|224}}</ref>.

Ultimately, the Fleet's leadership is assumed by Commander {{TOS-RH|Apollo}}, with Colonel {{TOS-RH|Athena}} assuming the commander's responsibilities when Apollo becomes unavailable<ref name="STG277">{{cite book/RH|1|277}}</ref> {{RH|Armageddon}}.

Following the events at {{TOS-RH|Kobol}} in the ''{{TOS-RH|Galactica}}'' novel series, the Fleet is bolstered when Commander {{TOS-RH|Cain}}'s settlement at {{TOS-RH|Poseidon}} is evacuated, adding approximately thirty-two vessels that had been found by ''{{TOS-RH|Pegasus}}'' following the [[Cylon attack]] and guided to Poseidon<ref name="WH73">{{cite book/RH|2|73}}</ref>. However, the Fleet also suffers grievous losses during the [[Battle of Poseidon]], with thirty-seven ships obliterated, including ''[[Scorpius Ascendant]]'', ''[[Valkyrior]]'', and ''[[Agro-2]]''<ref name="WH311">{{cite book/RH|2|311}}</ref>.

The Fleet is also comprised of [[Colonial shuttle|shuttles]] and Colonial {{TOS|Viper}}s, which are likely not indicated in the "220 ship" figure given in "[[Saga of a Star World]]". It is indicated that there are non-military shuttles that ferry people and, possibly, supplies throughout the Fleet. One such craft is the shuttle ''[[Canaris]]'' {{OS|The Man with Nine Lives}}, in addition to the shuttle piloted by [[Aurora (TOS)|Aurora]] of ''[[Celestra (TOS)|Celestra]]'' {{OS|Take the Celestra}}.

In addition to their ship complement, the Colonials have at least one [[Cylons (TOS)|Cylon]] [[Raider (TOS)|Raider]] in their possession, as a result of [[Battle at Galaxy's Edge|their victory at Galaxy's Edge]] {{OS|The Hand of God (TOS)}}. This captured Raider proves instrumental when {{TOS-RH|Starbuck}} uses it to escape the planet {{TOS-RH|Ochoa}}<ref name="STG196">{{cite book/RH|1|196}}</ref>.
