*The name of the episode refers to a [[w:litmus test|litmus test]], used in chemistry to determine the presence of an acid. The term is also used in politics, where it means to determine a candidate's stance on one or more crucial issues.

*The controversy surrounding whether [[Laura Roslin]] would shake [[Tom Zarek]]'s hand intentionally mirrored that at the signing of the [[w:Oslo Accords|Oslo Accords]] in 1993 about whether [[w:Yitzhak Rabin|Yitzhak Rabin]] would shake hands with [[w:Yasser Arafat|Yasser Arafat]].
*At the end, Roslin tells Zarek that he doesn't need to worry about her kissing him, to which he replied that it's a shame, as he shaved extra close in anticipation of getting "smacked" by her. This dialogue was taken verbatim from the movie ''[[w:Patton (film)|Patton]]'', with Roslin as Montgomery and Zarek as Patton.

*Ron Moore stated, in a podcast other than the one for this episode, that the small cassette tapes that Starbuck keeps in her Delphi apartment are a subtle homage to similar devices from the film version of ''[[w:A Clockwork Orange (film)|A Clockwork Orange]]''.

*This episode's title is a pun on the title of the 1926 [[w:Ernest Hemingway|Ernest Hemingway]] novel ''[[w:The Sun Also Rises|The Sun Also Rises]]''.
* [[Samuel Anders|Sam Anders]]' flipping a coin and continually coming up with heads is reminiscent of the early moments of Tom Stoppard's play ''Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead'', in which Rosencrantz has the same result on a coin flip over a dozen times.
