Prior to the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], Marta Shaw had succumbed to cancer, with her death having been reported throughout the [[Twelve Colonies of Kobol|Twelve Colonies]].  Admiral [[Helena Cain]] accused Lieutenant Shaw of exploiting her mother's fame and connections in order to gain a posting aboard Cain's command, the [[Mercury Class Battlestar|battlestar]] ''{{RDM|Pegasus}}'' {{TRS|Razor}}.
