| According to rigneygraphics.com, Vlaming, already an accomplished TV writer, decided that he wanted to work on The X-Files, which was already a ratings sensation, but was finding it extremely difficult to contact producer Chris Carter. Drawing on his '80s ad agency experience, Vlaming decided to create something special and mail it to Carter. What he came up with was a piece of special-effects sponge sculpted into the shape of an alien embryo floating in a pickle jar, all wrapped up in piece of paper that said, " My God, Mulder, it's trying to communicate!" Removing the wrapping revealed the floating fetus holding a little sign that read, "Jeff Vlaming is ready to pitch ideas." This got him the job.

| |
| |
| Vlaming was one of only three freelance scriptwriters to work on Battlestar Galactica, alongside Michael Angeli and Jane Espenson. His freelance status meant he contributed individual scripts without being part of the core writing staff, though his work on the series demonstrated the show's willingness to bring in experienced outside writers for specific episodes.
