The reason is that it breaks up the <ul> in the generated html, which does two things. First, it creates little inconsitenceies in the spacing of items in the list, and secondly, it breaks the structure of the list for anything that might want to crawl through it, like a script. It also looks better in the wiki source code, in my opinion, to have the all the "*" for the list visible.
