Lumbly was born and grew up in Minneapolis, where he attended South High School. There he pursued academics and sport as arts, including theatre, were not emphasised in the curriculum. Following high school, he attended Macalester College, where he considered pursuing medicine or law after guidance from his father. He ultimately decided to pursue a major in English, while he took part in student productions like ''Guys and Dolls''. Upon graduation, Lumbly sought work as a technical writer for 3M while pursuing part time work as a reporter for the Associated Press.
