The '''Academy''' is a training center for Colonial [[Warrior]]s and [[Protector]]s. 

Colonials students are trained in the roles for each profession. Captain {{TOS|Apollo}} studied law codes at the Academy, despite graduating as a Warrior, a point that Apollo is reminded of when he asks to defend Lieutenant {{TOS|Starbuck}}'s innocence in the termination of Flight Sergeant [[Ortega]] ([[TOS]]: "[[Murder on the Rising Star]]").

Its course of study included not only training in the use of advanced weaponry, but also a full academic program. Each entering cadet made a seven yahren commitment to a program that pushed his or her mental, physical and moral capacities to their limits. But despite the difficulty of training, the Academy attracted thousands of applicants from every corner of humandom. For each cadet accepted, one hundred were turned away.

The changes greatly improved the average quality of the students body, so that by Yahren [[5000]], the Academy graduated 10,000 in each class and had become the leading university of the Colonies. Although the [[The Twelve Colonies of Man|Twelve Great Colonies]] were separate nations without an effective central government, it was clear that cooperation was needed to develop a military force capable of repelling the Cylon attack. The Caprican [[Praesidium]] ceded the vast reserve on which Academy stood to the [[Quorum of Twelve (TOS)|Quorum of the Twelve]]. Each Colonial Government supplied experts and resources to transform the Academy into a battle-ready factory for the production of Warriors. A greatly expanded Department of Engineering and Applied Science produced such advances as the [[Turbolaser|turbo-laser]] and the [[Solium|liquid solium propulsion systems]].

: The core of the Academy was an expanded cadet training program. The best qualified young men and women were transformed into Colonial Warriors through seven yahren of strict discipline, physical training and instruction in battle skills. From the beginning of the Great War, cadets conducted their own defense. It is some measure of their excellence that in countless attacks only once during the 1000-yahren war did Cylon forces inflict substantial damage to the Academy itself.
