Re:Wiki Designs[edit]

Hello Shane

By chance happended upon your user page here after browsing the Matrix Wikia. Very impressive work here. Are you still offering to help with wiki layouts, and if so, is 'Forgotten Realms' something you would be able to work with? :) Thanks in advance Zerak talk 21:54, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Shane's reputation led me to ask him to help with the Matrix Wiki in the first place. :) Hopefully he has some time to give some tips. (I'm a Neverwinter Nights/2 fan, and more rabid Matrix fan, adding many articles on that wiki, but don't hold either against me. :) -- Spencerian 15:01, 19 April 2007 (CDT) (Talk - Contrib Skillz - Edit Skillz)

Link bot[edit]

You are clear to let loose the bot on changing Thirteenth Tribe to Thirteenth Tribe (RDM); I've done the TOS links and made a list of pages that intentionally link the disambig page. The same goes for converting Earth to Earth (RDM), JubalHarshaw and I have done the TOS links and I've also got a list for that one. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:33, 16 April 2007 (CDT)

Thirteenth Tribe changes happing now... Shane (T - C - E) 13:45, 16 April 2007 (CDT)
Hmm, the Thirteenth Tribe changes don't seem to be finished yet, and the bot has been silent for half an hour now. And can't you run the bot on a per-namespace basis? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:29, 16 April 2007 (CDT)
There is a good reason. While I was running it.. the cable/tv went out at my apartment and I had to goto work. do'h. I'm going to create a client side script for people to run at future dates. I have not think of a setting where it can be run in a namespace, but I will check. Shane (T - C - E) 02:36, 17 April 2007 (CDT)
You mean you actually run the bot at your home PC and it just uses the HTTP interface to MediaWiki? Then you probably use Special:Search, and you'd have to use a URL like "url". Although the namespace numbers vary on a per-Wiki basis, you can still automate it by parsing the HTML you get from the Special:Search page. Anyway, the bot I'm considering to write would operate on the server side and interact directly with the MediaWiki DB, making it a little more dangerous (it could theoretically frak up the DB if badly written) but allowing many more options to be implemented much easier. Finding all articles in all namespaces containing 'Earth' could by done with a simple SELECT query. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:40, 17 April 2007 (CDT)
No. I run the bot off the our server, but they way I run it, I have to be connected for it to run so I know it doesn't mess up the server. Replace I would usually never let it run alone. Doing interwiki links I run it and let it run by itself. Shane (T - C - E) 15:04, 17 April 2007 (CDT)
I see. Maybe I'll write a bot with a PHP interface over the summer, as that would be easier to use and would also serve people who don't have the luxury of SSH access to their server. But that's really more of a summer project. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:19, 17 April 2007 (CDT)

Styling on Editcount addon[edit]

http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Special:Editcount/Mercifull Shows up as all white. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 08:43, 16 April 2007 (CDT)

Highlight and it's still there. For some wicked reason, edit counts are in a white typeface on a white background ^^ --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:50, 16 April 2007 (CDT)
Yeah I know, its a simple change to do tho removing the hardcoded styling and setting it in the css. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 09:20, 16 April 2007 (CDT)
I sent in an SVN change before and they still haven't fixed it. I'll send it in again. Shane (T - C - E) 13:16, 16 April 2007 (CDT)
Change it ureself Mr Lazy, its quite simple :P --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 05:21, 17 April 2007 (CDT)
On ours I will.. but the source code I would have done a long time ago if I had access. Shane (T - C - E) 06:06, 17 April 2007 (CDT)
I don't think its being updated anymore. Change the code a bit, remove the hardcoded styling to make it look a bit neater and then upload it as an updated version to the extensions page :D --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 08:38, 17 April 2007 (CDT)

Error creating thumbnail[edit]

Billy Tan: MY gives MY MY. Can you fix this? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:13, 20 April 2007 (CDT)

That is because we havn't gotten around to installing SVG. :-) Also, I don't know if "Billy Tan" can be considered "Crew" and for that matter part of the RDM universe (category). Shane (T - C - E) 15:10, 20 April 2007 (CDT)
He's not in the Crew or Crew (RDM) cat, but the Crew Data template is used for all comic writers. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:34, 20 April 2007 (CDT)
well. rsvg is still not installed. So many requirements that I don't have any more time to fiddle around installing them. I will try to get to it tomorrow morning when I get back or Joe can take up the task. :) Shane (T - C - E) 16:15, 20 April 2007 (CDT)
Don't you have APT then? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 17:13, 20 April 2007 (CDT)
rsvg does not come in a package nor does any of the files needed for it to be installed or I would have done it a long time ago ;-) Shane (T - C - E) 05:54, 21 April 2007 (CDT)
Pity. Good think you do know APT though, it's a real time-saver. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:54, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

Bot work[edit]

Could you run the bot to do:

[[Thirteenth Tribe --> [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)
Thirteenth Tribe (RDM) --> Thirteenth Tribe

Or something of that sort (like you did with the Earth thingy)? Also, have you already discovered if it's possible to replace the Earth links for the other namespaces? TIA --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:27, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

Will have to run it once i get back from work. Just woke up and getting ready to leave. :-) Shane (T - C - E) 15:37, 21 April 2007 (CDT)
Just going to bed here :P --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:58, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

Could you please run the bot on Thirteenth Tribe and Earth some time soon? It's still not done yet... --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:49, 29 April 2007 (CDT)

If it's not in the main namespace, it can not be done. Shane (T - C - E) 22:03, 29 April 2007 (CDT)
Look here again. Most of these things are most definitely in the main namespace. I'll clear up the out-of-main links for Earth manually then. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 03:52, 30 April 2007 (CDT)

lol. Yeah. The day shift was fun. Very interesting.. not doing it ever again though. The sun kills. Shane (T - C - E) 03:10, 1 May 2007 (CDT)

Deletion question[edit]

Hey. I checked out your comment to Mudflap on the article you deleted, "Number Thirteen". You might have jumped on the contributor a bit too hard. While it wasn't a particularly funny page, the contributor was trying to make a silly page (he added a category for it instead of trying to use the sillypage tag). I'm going to amend your reasoning on that article by adding a comment myself about the still-justified rationale for deleting the article based on Silly Page policy rather than an attempt at patent nonsense or unsourced speculation. FYI. -- Spencerian 07:56, 4 May 2007 (CDT) (Talk - Contrib Skillz - Edit Skillz)

MediaWiki API[edit]

I noticed you were working on (or are supposed to be working on) some bots for this wiki. In that case you may be interested in the new MediaWiki API, which is still WIP, but will make bot programming a lot easier. I, personally, will wait a few months for the MediaWiki folks to complete their API before I take a plunge in bot coding (no state-changing actions have been implemented yet, only some query features). FYI --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:56, 8 May 2007 (CDT)

WP FBI edits?[edit]

Are you still looking for copy-edits to your FBI page? It's a very cool article. I'll take a crack at it this evening. I'm a little new to wiki-editing, so please let me know if overstep. --Patricia 00:59, 19 May 2007 (CDT)

Yes! No one else has gotten to it and I been trying to get the article FA status forever! Shane (T - C - E) 02:14, 19 May 2007 (CDT)
Made a number of edits. Tried to do them in chunks in case you don't agree with all of them. I think the "Criticism" section could use some cleaning up -- it seems disjointed and information does not appear to be prioritized (I'm guessing pieces were written at different times by different people) -- but that's probably better done by someone with more content knowledge than myself. I'm not very familiar with the FA process, but let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. Good luck! --Patricia 03:21, 19 May 2007 (CDT)

ELSE: void[edit]

Just so you know, you don't need to do | <!-- ELSE: --> void. Leaving out the ELSE parameter altogether is enough. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:40, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

BE flag[edit]

Somehow, your last edit to Template:Border messed up the borders for BEL BEL. Just so you know. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 13:02, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Upon careful testing, reverting your last edit turned out to fix everything, so that's what I did. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 07:41, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
Ir wasn't that. It was the Main Page I was worried about. I guess we need a "code" to override the default. Shane (T - C - E) 09:19, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
Hmm, now the Main Page is completely messed up. If you mean the DE flag not lining up with the other flags is already fixed (I moved it down by 5px, ugly, I know, but it works), so maybe we could carry on from there. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:26, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, but it will not carry over to an non-compataible broswer that 5px change.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Shane (talk • contribs).
It's also flag-dependant (although that can be fixed with a #switch): every flag must be moved down by half its height. I tried position:relative; top: 50%;, but that didn't work. The advantage of this method, though, is that BEL BEL's border actually fits around the flag. But then it's not perfectly aligned (since it's taller, it has to be moved down more). We could do this the #switch way and move down each flag by the correct amount, but that's still ugly. Any other ideas? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:34, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
New discovery: actually, the formula for the top: value is more complicated: flag height/2 - text height/2. BTW, the <math> tags don't work. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:50, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

Reverts[edit]

Could you explain why you reverted my edits to the archive templates? Two of them corrected a template name (Template:Archive-items doesn't exist, Template:Archive-item does), of which one also fixed a spelling error. The third was my bad, I overlooked the PAGENAME/BASEPAGENAME distinction.

The rollback button is a blunt stick, as Spence once put it, so take a close look at what you're about to revert, as part of it might be beneficial. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:24, 6 June 2007 (CDT)

It was a coding issue. Even though the change was minor it messed up the code for all pages that are archives NOT on a talk page. The spelling mistake was an oversight. ;) Shane (T - C - E) 17:19, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

Why did you remove the start and end parameters in Template:Archive-message? I use them, they work(ed), and I don't see how they could break the ArchiveBot. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:04, 14 June 2007 (CDT)

Restored. Shane (T - C - E) 22:45, 16 June 2007 (CDT)

Bot request[edit]

Could you run autoreplacements for these colony links?

I've done some by hand, but Sagittaron alone is linked on 94 pages. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:05, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

You'll end up with links like Aerelon, but I guess it's better than doing it by hand. --Serenity 11:07, 29 June 2007 (CDT)
To counter that, you'd run a second replacement:
 • Aerelon --> Aerelon and friends
--Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:21, 29 June 2007 (CDT)
Copy that. Will run ASAP. :) Shane (T - C - E) 11:53, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

Archive-Bot[edit]

I'm wondering... I just added the ArchiveBot to my user talk, and it has yet to do anything. --BklynBruzer 12:12, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Have to run it manually right now off my laptop. I'll run it before I leave today. Shane (T - C - E) 13:33, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Jurgen Belzen spoiler[edit]

Note that this character is known since "Pegasus". All that is new now is a name. Before that the article was called "Unnamed Pegasus Executive Officer". Same information, no spoiler. On the one hand, it's a spoiler that he will appear in "Razor", but on the other hand it's kind of obvious. This is something of an gray area. Depends on how far one goes when determining how 'spoilerish' something is. Of course it might be better to err on the side of caution and tag everything where he is mentioned, but it also seems a bit excessive. --Serenity 16:36, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

I just tags the pages where it's really obvious and the order box for Jack. I'm not going to crazy, but I don't want people clicking on the name and then they learn information. Shane (T - C - E) 16:38, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
Well, the only thing that is a spoiler (using our definition, anyway) is the Kendra Shaw stuff, and the XO's name. We already know that Cain kills the XO on the bridge, per the appropriate season 2 eps. If anything, just apply the spoiler warnings to Shaw, and that's it. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 18:18, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

To install..[edit]

I would hold of on the pdf_book extension, it's still in beta and has some issues, from what I've read. (The pdf_export though, it quite cool.) Also, I don't see the point of the delete old revisions extension, since we do need to preserve histories for the purposes of the CC license we use, in addition to legal needs. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 14:05, 27 August 2007 (CDT)
I was thinking those categories that don't need to be in the WantedCategories. They show up because they have revisions. Shane (T - C - E) 14:19, 27 August 2007 (CDT)
As so long as it's used for that purpose, then I'm fine with it. But it can't be used on articles that presently exist. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 14:43, 27 August 2007 (CDT)

Interwiki[edit]

Hello Shane, Catrope told me to ask you, if you could run the Interwiki-Bot, please? :-) I've added a lot of DE to EN-Links in the German Battlestar Galactica Wiki, especially in the new articles. Thanks. --Thwidra 07:45, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

Thank you. That's great! :-) --Thwidra 11:54, 1 September 2007 (CDT)

ArchiveBot[edit]

Is there any way we can keep the archivebot edits from registering as page-changes? Half of the messages I get from the wiki are references to it's actions, which, actually, I don't mind, except for the fact that it farks with my watch list, which means I have to hit the page in question to reset the watch notifications. Can we find a way around that? ~~ Durandal 00:13, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

At the moment, no. Sorry. We would have to hack MediaWiki for a non-watch list Bot edit etc. But even those are required sometimes if I bot goes crazy.  :) Shane (T - C - E) 11:16, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Do you watch so many user talk pages then? AFAIK, only user talk pages, BW:CN and BW:OC are autoarchived. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:50, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Exactly why did you block him? Joe give him a warn-4, but AFAIK he hasn't done any vandalism since. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 16:05, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

He added the same stuff to a talk page of User talk:Zenzero‎ here. I consider the issue closed and delt with. Shane (T - C - E) 16:07, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

FSRepo.php error?[edit]

This printed out when I deleted Image:Earth RDM.png:

Warning: chmod() [function.chmod]: Operation not permitted in /home/bsgwiki/w/includes/filerepo/FSRepo.php on line 425

Don't know what it is, and it doesn't seem to be critical, but obviously something we need to look into. I figure you might know about it more than I would. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 18:01, 6 December 2007 (CST)

It means the web server doesn't have permission to change permissions on a certain file (probably the file you were deleting), which in turn means the web server probably doesn't own that file. That's pretty weird, 'cause the web server very likely created the file in the first place... --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:02, 7 December 2007 (CST)

Interwiki links[edit]

I've added interwiki links for the fr: and versions to BW:SAC, perhaps you could run the interwiki bot to add those links on other wikis as well? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 17:06, 22 December 2007 (CST)

we have to set it to run on the Battlestar Wiki namespace, as it is only designed for the Main Name Space. ;x Shane (T - C - E) 00:19, 23 December 2007 (CST)
That's ridiculous. Or is it because it uses Special:Allpages? --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 07:42, 23 December 2007 (CST)
I really have no idea how it works. I have to look at the Sourcecode to see if we can get it to work off another namespace. The problem is the template names space necause if you think about it, you gotta tell the bot to put the interwiki code enclosed in the <noinclude></noinclude> tags for the interwiki link not to be rendered on those pages that it's on. :| Shane (T - C - E) 10:02, 23 December 2007 (CST)
Sucks. I'm hoping to finish the editing functionality in the MediaWiki API sometime soon and force pretty much all bots to rewrite their code ;) I'll write a more flexible interwiki bot after that if I have time ;) --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:44, 23 December 2007 (CST)
