Comments on New Design

For those who have no clue, there is a new skin in town called "Battlestar". Based of the Eureka Wiki design, we migrated it over here to the BSG Wiki. To check it out change your skin preference to "Battlestar". Shane ^{(T - C - E)} 23:34, 22 September 2007 (CDT)

Looks nice, but I'm gonna stick with bsgbook. Battlestar has the article/discussion/edit/history tabs underneath the page, which I find really annoying. But I guess taste differs. --Catrope^{(Talk to me or e-mail me)} 07:57, 23 September 2007 (CDT)

It's actually at the bottom and top. The design itself is nice (although it takes some getting used to), but it's terrible for widescreen. Only a small part of the screen in the middle is actually used for the article, leaving huge chunks of empty space at the sides. While that makes it easier to optimize an article's layout, it just looks bad. --Serenity 08:08, 23 September 2007 (CDT)

We could make a version that would be larger width. Right now on my laptop and the resolution is 1024 and it fits perfectly. :P Making different sizes is no problem, it's the sizes we should have. 1280x720 would be the other size I work on as it's more common for desktops -- it remove about 2/3 of the black on both sides. My desktop monitor supports 1900x1200 which would cut the black on the outside by half. However, I will only do that once I nail down the design elements. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. We'd have the new skin (Battlestar), then we'd have a version for widescreen resolutions (Battlestar Widescreen). I don't hate it. I'll have to play with it a while to decide whether or not I choose to keep it. Also, I'm seeing half the BSG Wiki logo underneath the entire thing. Is anyone else getting this? --Slander 15:50, 24 September 2007 (CDT)

I was going to take one when I got home from work, but it looks fine on Firefox. At the office, I use IE. I'll see if I can't Picnik a screenshot tomorrow. I also don't see the character portraits on IE. --Slander 17:59, 24 September 2007 (CDT)

IE 6 errors.

Ok, I found two serious problems in IE 6. The ones that Slander was referring to. Also, the rotating character shows up... just way off where it's supposed to be, as the picture says. I IE 7 (Which I am using now) the only thing messed up is the character placement. IE 6 might be impossiable to fix since it's not being worked on anymore. I might have to recomment IE 7+ for the website. Shane ^{(T - C - E)} 12:52, 25 September 2007 (CDT)

Isn't there some Javascript-powered way that we can detect IE 6 and give it an IE6-fucked up version of the skin so it'll be rendered correctly? If not, we probably wanna stick with bsgbook as our default skin. --Catrope^{(Talk to me or e-mail me)} 13:06, 25 September 2007 (CDT)

Minor issue regarding gallery

There's a minor issue with the gallery feature in this skin . As seen by Viper (TOS)#Related images, the bottom cell in the second column isn't filled to the bottom like the other two that flank it. Protection

I wanted to add some news to the merch section, but the Wiki is telling me the main page is protected with cascading on. Any ideas when we'll be able to edit it again? --Slander 09:43, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

I think cascade-protecting the Main Page was intended as a permanent measure (dunno for sure, though), so I guess you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way: put the news on the associated talk page and ask an admin to add it. --Catrope^{(Talk to me or e-mail me)} 10:56, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

Unprotecting CF News Service didn't help: it's still protected. Rather than cascading-protecting Main Page, we may want to just protect everything that needs protecting manually. --Catrope^{(Talk to me or e-mail me)} 15:31, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

I've gone ahead and removed the cascading protection; the Main Page and some components will be protected, of course, but besides that everything else that should be editable is editable. Should we protect the following?

• Main Page/Community Section
• Main Page/Friends Section
• Main Page/Sister Projects
  • These are edited very rarely, and only ever by Joe or Shane
• Main Page/Featured Article
• Main Page/Featured Picture
  • Switched each month, usually by an admin
