Additional Information

The Orion class battlestar was first developed and deployed sometime before or during the First Cylon War. The Orion class is also know as a "Pocket Battlestar" or "Half-Pint" and appears among the smaller ships in the Colonial Fleet, dwarfed even by the Valkyrie type. It is to date the smallest battlestar class seen.

When compared to her larger counterparts, this class is generally more maneuverable, however, it is not considered a match for a Cylon basestar.

Design[edit]

Orion class battlestars feature a unique reflective metallic hull which acts as an inhibitor to Cylon DRADIS, and can operate in "stealth mode" within detection range for a short period without being seen.

It featured four large sub-light engines, two of which are attached in separate housings off the main hull, and numerous RCS thrusters at key points. A landing bay is also accessible from the rear.

Furthermore, it is also unique in that it features a large conning tower on top of the main hull, and a large dual antenna array on the ventral back of the ship, taking away from the usual streamlined look of Colonial vessels. This possibly also prevents ships of this class from operating intra-atmosphere.

The underside of the main hull has a large landing bay and Viper launch tubes, housing a small contingent of Raptors. It is also possible to operate a small number of Vipers.

Weaponry[edit]

Ships of this class are moderately armed, with at least 32 point defense batteries, 12 primary gun turrets, multiple missile launch tubes, along with Raptors and the potential for a handful of Vipers. Despite this, they are generally unable to stand alone in battle and are easily overwhelmed by the larger Cylon capital ships. Compared with a basestar, the potential Viper complement is outnumbered ten to one by Raiders.

This class appears to feature little defensive armor, possibly a trade-off for the stealth capabilities of the reflective hull, and are easily penetrated by Cylon missile barrages.

Capabilities[edit]

The full capabilities of this class are unknown, but appear to be similar to that of a submarine. They appear capable of conducting covert operations behind enemy lines, and support of planetary defense in coordination with their assigned Battlestar Group.
