Katee's third tattoo is on her right forearm, just below the inner side of her elbow; consisting of the words "bona fiscalia". "Bona fiscalia" is Latin for "public property".  This tattoo is actually visible in numerous episodes and has not been given an in-story explanation, such as how a phrase from an Earth-based language (Latin) could be present in the Twelve Colonies, although several character names (like Gaius and Valerii) are also Latin. At the beginning of the show, they tried to avoid showing it, for example by having Katee tuck her arm slightly behind her in wide-shots, but it was still visible on ocassion, and with time they abandoned the attempts.

Kathryn Ann Sackhoff, credited as Katee Sackhoff, is an American actress who portrays Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.

Biographical Notes[edit]

Born and raised in and around St. Helens, Oregon, Sackhoff moved to Beaverton when she was 15. Sackhoff originally took up swimming and planned to swim in college, and then be in a competitive swimming career, but a knee injury ended those plans (just as a knee injury ended her character's plans of being a pyramid player). After this, Sackhoff took up acting when she was 16.

Sackhoff most recently starred opposite Richard Dreyfuss and Marcia Gay Harden in the CBS series, The Education of Max Bickford. On the big screen, she appeared opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in Dimension Films' Halloween 8: Resurrection. She was also featured in the films My First Mister with Christine Lahti and The Glass House with Diane Lane.

Upon graduating from high school in Portland, Oregon, Sackhoff moved to Los Angeles, where she landed the lead role in the MTV pilot Locust Valley. She went on to star in the Fox Family Channel series The Fearing Mind. Sackhoff's other television credits include a recurring role on MTV's Undressed, guest spots on ER; Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane and Chicken Soup for the Soul. She also had a supporting role in the USA Network film Hefner: Unauthorized. She will appear in the upcoming films White Noise 2 and The Last Sentinel.

According to Ron Moore and David Eick in the podcast for "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II", Katee is no longer dating a tackle from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Katee has a dog named "Meatball". Recently, she aquired a new dog from a Vancouver pet store, whom she named Nelly B (after her The Education of Max Bickford character).

Katee is 5'6" tall.

Sackhoff wears a thumb ring on one of her hands. This piece of jewelry was written into the series and is said to be an engagement ring from Zak Adama.

Tattoos[edit]

Katee has three tattoos that we know of. She has a crucifix tattoo on her left shoulder blade. In the show, it is always covered up by bandages, etc. when the skin might be exposed (her scene with Anders at the beginning of "The Farm", for example) as christianity is not present in Battlestar Galactica. Since "Unfinished Business" it has been inked over with a large stepped pyramid.

Katee also has a tattoo of a Japanese character for "choice" on the back of her neck. In season one, they usually tried to avoid showing the back of Starbuck's neck in camera shots, but an observant viewer can still see it. In Season 2 her hair was longer, but when she tied it to a ponytail it was nontheless visible.
