Jim "Sunshine" Kirby is a Viper pilot on detachment from the battlestar Valkyrie. He is an old friend of Coker Fasjovik, and was thought to be killed after the apparent destruction of the Battlestar at the hands of the Cylons near Canceron Prime.

Officially, he is listed as KIA by the Colonial Fleet. He sacrificed his past life for an opportunity to strike the Cylons when they least expected it. His wife, Janey, had a baby boy, Anslem, who was named after his father.

He participates in the Battle of Djerba, escorting the Wild Weasel down to rendezvous with a marine spec ops team. On the way, three raiders follow them, and Kirby engages, destroying a raider. After his wingman, Lieutenant Zachary Elias, is killed, and his Viper takes damage, Kirby suddenly disengages from battle and claims he's going home. His final fate is unknown (Blood and Chrome).
