Overview

The Battlestar Galactica Museum is a military history museum featuring a collection of museum ships from the First Cylon War, constructed in the starboard flight pod of the now retired battlestar Galactica. The museum serves as an educational center and as a memorial to those who served during the War.

The main part of the museum is featured on the former landing deck, which as now been pressurized with massive canopies installed over the pod's entryways. The hangar deck and launch tubes below has been converted into a gift shop, and recreational area. A ceremonial flyby of Galactica's last remaining active Viper squadron and the decommissioning ceremony was held here just prior to the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies.

The main exhibits featured many First War artifacts including a Mk I Viper, an older class battlestar, a Landram, a transport shuttle, a squadron (40) of Mk II Vipers, a Cylon Raider, a model of a Cylon Basestar, and a model of a Cylon Centurion.

After the Fall

During the attacks on the Colonies, the Galactica deck crew hurriedly restored some of the exhibits to working condition upon receiving the news. First priority was the Viper Mark II squadron, which was needed to defend the battlestar, which had dumped the last of their munitions as part of the decommissioning ceremonies, and which had to fill in the gap after the Galactica's last Viper squadron was destroyed (Miniseries). After fleeing the Colonies, many of the pieces found full time use throughout the Fleet. The Vipers were kept for full time use in defending the fleet, and the landram was used for mining operations aboard Majahual, and flight deck operations aboard Galactica (TRS: "Scar", "Escape Velocity").

What remained of the museum was heavily damaged, and ultimately destroyed as time wore on. The first hit came when an out of control Heavy Raider crashed into the pod, depressurizing it. Here, a handful of newer Centurions boarded the ship, marching over museum pieces as they forced their way into the ship and attacked the crew, resulting in many casualties (TRS: Scattered). The starboard flight pod was also used as a quarantine zone for anyone needing isolation, as was the case when many of Galactica's marines and pilots came into contact with Cylons carrying Lymphocytic encephalitis (TRS: "A Measure of Salvation"). The final blow to the museum (and the flight pod that hosted it) came after a handful of Raptors utilized their FTL drives inside the pod, as they jumped to the Cylon Colony. The distortions caused by the jumping ships blew a hole in the forward section of the pod, obliterating it. The surviving museum artifacts, if any, were later flown into a nearby star with the rest of the fleet following the battle (TRS: "Daybreak, Part II"). Despite utilizing the pod for limited purposes, and receiving Vipers from the battlestar Pegasus, the starboard flight pod was never converted back for full time use.
