The term frame is used throughout the Colonial Fleet. It is a military vessel term which was derived from the term describing the "ribs" of a vessel or main lateral bulkheads within a ship. These major structural bulkheads provide structural strength to a ship-divide vessels. These also serve as dividers within the vessels interiors space into airtight compartments as a form of damage control should breaches occur within the hull and venting of atmosphere out into space occur. These bulkhead frames contain decompression within compartment or bays.

Often when discussing areas of the ship, frame numbers are used to quickly define sections of the vessel in question. For example, when the Galactica was hit with a nuclear warhead during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, Galactica's XO Saul Tigh informed Commander Adama the extent of the fires burning within the severely damaged port side flight pod by referencing what compartments were on fire by saying "everything forward of frame 250", by which he was referring to the lateral bulkhead within the port side flight pod number 250, or in other words the 250th lateral structural bulkhead support rib within the hulls superstructure.
