And to be honest, he needs to take a call quickly himself. So, I check my emails, and there’s one from Joe [Rybandt] and Nick [Barrucci] saying that they’ve had this idea for a Steampunk ''Battlestar Galactica'' series, they’re not sure how it’d work, did I have any thoughts on it, that sort of thing. The producer comes back in and, from one look on my face, he knows I’ve hit some kind of motherload. So, I tell him. And it turns out he’s a massive ''Battlestar Galactica'' fan. And we spend the next ten minutes bonding as I explain how I’d do a Steampunk ''Battlestar Galactica'' series, before moving back to the movie I was there to pitch. But those ten minutes were invaluable, as it meant that by the time I replied to Joe and Nick, I already had a fully fleshed out idea of what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to play it. And bar a couple of characters, it’s pretty much how I envisioned it back in February.<ref name="westfield"/>

Summary[edit]

At last! The epic story you've been dying to see is here, a galaxy and timeline-spanning saga bringing the two very different (and yet so very much alike) crews of the Battlestar Galacticas series together. But don't expect this historic meeting of heroes to be friendly: they have no idea why they have been brought together, or what the result of this unprecedented meeting is. And it starts here as the legendary Commander Cain and the crew of the Pegasus are revealed to be alive, and have encountered an individual they never thought they would meet: the last Cylon. All this has happened before, but there will NEVER be anything like it again![1]

Chapter 1[edit]

  • Pegasus jumps away from the two Cylon basestars that they attacked at Gamoray.
  • Tyr reports that the majority of damage occurred on Pegasus's portside, and that the engines barely managed the lightspeed jump. With low fuel, they're able to only sustain forward motion until they can replenish. Furthermore, the hull is damaged, but can be repaired given time.
  • Cain replies that, with their engines dead and Galactica also believing them to be dead, they have nothing but time.
  • Two sectares later, Cain records a letter to Sheba. He notes that he considers giving up command, so that he may relieve himself of the burden and rest while thinking about his daughter's fate. He further notes that repairs to the hull are as complete as they can make them.
  • His executive officer, Iollas, enters his quarters without knocking. Cain chides him for this, and they discuss whether or not Earth exists; Cain believes it doesn't, and that it is a "fairy tale" that Adama and his flock of survivors tell themselves in order to get through their exodus from their destroyed Colonies.
  • Cain receives a call from the bridge, asking for his presence.
  • Tyr reports that they're receiving a distress beacon from a dead planet, which activated shortly after they entered the sector. Before they can discuss further, they receive a direct hail from a bi-pedaled creature. She asks if they are "hoomans," to which Cain replies in the affirmative. She requests a face-to-face meeting on the planet surface.
  • Iollas offers to go to the surface in Cain's stead, but Cain dismisses the offer.

Incongruences[edit]

  • As is the case throughout the Battlestar Galactica vs. Battlestar Galactica series, the artistic depictions of the ships (and even persons) between the two different universes are either interchanged, or swapped entirely.
  • With regard to characters, Pegasus executive officer Tolan that had been featured in "The Living Legend" is unmentioned—and quite possibly either forgotten about or ignored by the author for reasons unknown—and an older character named Iollas assumes this role instead. Of note, Iollas himself is neither seen nor mentioned in future issues of Battlestar Galactica vs. Battlestar Galactica.

Nods[edit]

  • Cain's comment of "Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up command" is a likely nod to Lloyd Bridges' character of "Steve McCroskey" in Airplane! and its sequel. This is due to McCroskey being known for his "looks like I picked the wrong day to give up [on something]" statements during stressful situations the something being either "smoking," "sniffing glue," et cetera.
