When the Cylons attack, the fleet is in the middle of a tylium asteroid minefield. This makes the asteroids explosive and just as dangerous as any enemy fighters. The Battle of Molecay was a major engagement between Cylon forces and the Fifth Fleet (including the battlestar Pegasus), approximately two yahrens prior to Pegasus's miraculous re-discovery by Galactica and her civilian Fleet after the destruction of the Colonies.

This fleet, under the command of Commander Cain, was apparently destroyed (The Living Legend, Part I).

Cain and Pegasus survive the encounter, and later meet up with the rag-tag Fleet being led by Galactica, where Cain works to incite an attack on Cylon forces at Gamoray (The Living Legend, Part I).

Fan Fiction[edit]

There is a fan fiction novel called The Battle of Molecay from Clean Slate Press. It describes the Fifth fleet as being composed of three battlestars (Pegasus, Brittanica, and Olympus) and a number of smaller vessels. Baltar and Karibdis place a bomb on the Pegasus forcing it to briefly stop for repairs, allowing the rest of the fifth fleet to go ahead.

When the Cylons attack, the fleet is in the middle of a tylium asteroid minefield. This makes the asteroids explosive and just as dangerous as any enemy fighters. By the time the Pegasus arrives at the battle, the Brittanica and Olympus have been destroyed as well as two of the three Cylon basestars. After the initial battle ends, the only suriving ships of the Fifth fleet are the Pegasus and a smaller vessel, the Venture.

Cain uses the Venture as bait to lure the remaining Cylon basestar into a trap. The Venture was loaded with explosives and placed among a number of deadly tylium asteroids, causing the Cylons to be destroyed when they attacked it. Cain then takes the Pegasus out into deep space in order to avoid the other Cylons who would be waiting for them to try to return to the Colonies.
