The storm zone as seen from the Fleet's perspective (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #6).

Following the Nebula Ambush, the Fleet happens across another "fork in the road," featuring a well-charted sector of space and a "storm zone" (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #6).

The storm zone, also referred to as a quantum storm (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #7), consists of high energon stellar storms that blue flight, lead by Lt. Starbuck, investigate. In returning to Galactica, blue flight's Vipers are found to be charged with high-static energon fields, which discharge into void lightning that hits Xam and causes a total power outage aboard the battlestar (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #6.

Upon hitting Xam, the discharge awakens latent psionic potential, which grows due to the proximity of the energon fields of the storm zone. These psionic abilities project false yet immutable beliefs that Earth lies at the center of the storm zone, heavily influencing many people in the Fleet, including Commander Adama (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #7#11).

Due to Cylon engagement into the unnamed, coreward quadrant by Capt. Apollo and red flight (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #6), Commander Adama approves going through the storm zone (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #7.
