Overview
:The cancer-stricken President Laura Roslin and hotheaded pilot Kara Thrace both must make difficult leaps of faith in order to accept an uneasy alliance with the Cylons.

Summary
Teaser
*Angry and defiant at Karl Agathon's refusal to obey orders to travel to a basestar, Kara Thrace attempts to jump the ship herself when Athena restrains her.
*Agathon orders Gaeta to jump the ship back to Galactica. Samuel Anders points out that they will be returning as mutineers, but Agathon responds that Admiral Adama will sort things out.
*Anders intervenes with a sidearm, shooting Gaeta in the leg to stop him from following Agathon's order to jump back to the Fleet. Chaos ensues as Marines arrive.
*Everyone stands down as Gaeta is attended to, in severe pain from a leg wound.
*Realizing that taking the Demetrius itself to the baseship would be too great a risk, Thrace rescinds her original order, suggesting to fly their only Raptor to the baseship with Athena and Anders as crew, taking Leoben Conoy with them. Agathon initially objects but realizes it's the best compromise. He tells her that she has only 15 hours to complete her mission before the Demetrius must jump to rendezvous with the Fleet or be left behind.

Act 1
*Tory Foster is packing things up on Colonial One. Laura Roslin is at her desk, bald and not wearing her wig. She tells Foster to keep things going as she finishes the last two diloxin treatments, where she'll be on Galactica and indisposed during that time. Roslin tries to encourage Foster to watch out for sudden moves by the Quorum.
*On day 58 of their mission, the crew prepares the Raptor. Athena promises to work with Thrace as does Jean Barolay, who appreciates Thrace's strong reputation.
*The Raptor jumps and finds a massive graveyard of dead baseships and Raiders floating dead in space. Thrace is amazed. They are by a large gas giant in a trinary star system, just as her visions suggested.
*On the Demetrius, Gaeta is heavily medicated with morpha for the pain. He asks Agathon not to have Dr. Cottle amputate his leg, as he realizes that the longer he doesn't get advanced care, the more likely gangrene will set in.
*The Raptor carefully searches for the baseship amidst the exploding ordnance. Thrace can hear "music" (Leoben confirms this is a rare trait among some Cylons as well) and takes control to fly the Raptor towards the gas giant. She sees the comet she expected, but not in the form; Leoben's stricken baseship is flying past, trailing gas that gives it a comet-like appearance.
*When approaching the baseship, the Raptor is hit by a piece of debris hurtled at them from an explosion and impacting the cockpit canopy.

Act 2
*Thrace awakens to find the Raptor safely landed within the baseship interior.
*Athena arrives to find herself surrounded by an army of other Number Eights, who recognize her independence from all things Cylon. They ask her to help mutiny against the Sixes, whom they feel have been making a series of mistakes. Athena rejects them, telling them to find their own individuality and help her or get out of her way.
*In sickbay, amidst Gaius Baltar's voice on wireless discussing his God, Roslin encounters a woman in sickbay, Emily Kowalski, who is gravely ill with cancer as well. When Roslin tries to turn off the wireless and Baltar, the woman becomes very upset and yells for Roslin to leave.
*Thrace's meeting with the surviving leaders of the baseship does not go well, but Leoben succeeds in convincing Natalie that they must work together.
*Athena accesses the datastream to determine how to mate the Raptor's jump drive to the baseship. Doing so requires disconnecting the Hybrid. As the group preps, Anders slowly reaches down to touch the data-font but pulls his hand back when Thrace calls his name.
*A Six sees Jean Barolay and recognizes her as the human who killed her on New Caprica. When Barolay doesn't show any remorse and says she would do the same again, the Six attacks her and smashes her head into the Raptor's hull, which kills Barolay. Anders pounces on the Six and is ready to kill the Cylon when Thrace manages to talk him down.
*The Six that killed Barolay speaks to Natalie, obviously dealing with psychological trauma from the death on New Caprica that she had not been able to shake. After kissing the distraught Six, Natalie grabs Anders's hand and pulls the trigger on his gun, killing the Six permanently as there is no Resurrection Ship nearby, carrying out a form of justice for the Colonials, who are shocked.
*Roslin meets again with Emily Kowalski, who gives her a scarf, a present. The two make small talk of what they will do after they get well. She warns Roslin that her sickness will get worse and to be prepared.

Act 3
*Thrace arrives in the Hybrid's chamber, who seems to ignore her, discussing ship functions but repeating one phrase in particular.

*In sickbay, Emily Kowalski tells Roslin why she listens to Baltar. After speaking to Cottle, she tells of a dream where she saw people standing on the opposite side of a river: dead loved ones. She felt a presence, a warm loving presence that calmed her. Roslin questions the dream but Emily notes that the dream is real.

*Thrace and Natalie continue to listen to the Hybrid's utterances. Leoben instructs Thrace to listen carefully, not to hurry the construct.

*Athena is ready to activate the jump augmentations and disconnect the Hybrid. Irritated at getting nowhere with the Hybrid, Thrace orders the jump.
*When it is unplugged, the Hybrid makes an inhuman scream, which causes a guarding Cylon Centurion (still in sentient mode) to fire in defense, severely wounding an Eight before the group manages to take the Centurion down.

*The Hybrid gives Thrace a coherent message as the Eight's blood mixes with the fluid in her tank: The dying leader will discover the truth about the Opera House, the missing Three will be used to find the Five, who come from the home of the Thirteenth Tribe, and that she, Thrace, is the harbinger of death that will take all to their end. Thrace is horrified at the message. The Hybrid then deactivates.

*Kowalski and Roslin continue to discuss the authenticity of the Lords of Kobol and Baltar's God. Roslin becomes upset when she talks of her mother's death from cancer and the striking lack of anything noble or calming at that moment. As Kowalski tries to comfort her, the woman suddenly has a violent seizure of pain. Cottle arrives with medication, but tells Roslin that there's not much they can do for Kowalski now.

Act 4
*As the group waits, the dying Eight speaks to Athena, who reaches out for her, but hesitates when she wants to touch her hand. Anders steps in to tenderly comfort the Cylon as she dies, astonished at how similar she is to a human.

*The group deciphers the Hybrid's message. All come to the conclusion that the final five Cylons came from the Thirteenth Tribe and so must also know the way to Earth. The boxed Number Threes will lead them to the Final Five. Anders is unnerved by the conversation, likely fearing the exposure of his Cylon identity. The group leave to meet the Demetrius, with Anders leaving last, still puzzled that he is drawn to help the Eight.

*Kowalski's vision of a river comes to pass in a dream Roslin experiences. The two stand on a boat, looking at a shore where human figures begin to appear, smiling and waving at Kowalski. Kowalski disappears to meet them, materializing on the shore. Roslin feels joy, then sees her own mother, smiling and waiting for Roslin to join her. She tells her she is not yet ready, stepping away from the boat's side, as the dream ends.

*Awakening from her dream, Roslin goes to see Kowalski but finds her bed empty. She died some time while she slept. Only her wireless receiver remains, still switched on.

*Demetrius is prepping to leave as seconds count down but Agathon lets the clock run over in hesitation and to the crew's apprehension. Seconds before he is about to order the jump, the baseship arrives and broadcasts Colonial ID. Wireless contact is established with Athena, who reports that the baseship has been secured, much to Agathon's relief, and both ships prepare to join Galactica and the fleet.

*On Galactica, Roslin meets with William Adama in his quarters. She tells him that something may be truthful in Baltar's words, but Adama is reluctant. A sorrowful Adama talks of Thrace's death and return, his son's resignation from the military, and laments all the crew he sent with Thrace, wondering if he will see them again. But Roslin comforts him. The two smile as Adama tells her that Roslin helped him to believe that they really will find Earth.

Notes
*Baltar's wireless broadcast contains a number of phrases from the "To be or not to be" soliloquy of Hamlet, including "shuffle off this mortal coil," and "the undiscover'd country, from whose bourn no traveler returns." These phrases refer to death and the afterlife, respectively. The full text of the soliloquy can be found here.
*Meanwhile, the Hybrid's repeated speech borrows text from the Biblical book of Jeremiah, chapter 31, verses 13 to 17.
* The comet/drifting baseship bears a visual resemblance to the Ship of Lights from the Original Series, both in the painting and reality.
* This episode marks the third time Laura Roslin discusses her family in any detail, and the first time viewers see an image of Roslin's mother. (The first mention, also involving her mother's fight with cancer, was in "Act of Contrition" in Season 1.)

Analysis
General
* Some of the writers' misdirection from "He That Believeth in Me" becomes clear. The "giant gas planet with rings", assumed to be Jupiter or Saturn, is revealed to be at the site of the Cylon battle. Moreover, the comet is a damaged and drifting basestar. This also explains how Conoy was able to help Thrace paint the scene in the previous episode, since he had already witnessed it himself.
* A close-up of Kara Thrace in the Hybrid's chamber evokes the Eye of Jupiter, with Thrace's blue eye at the center, ringed by her bloodied eyebrow and blonde hair.
* With its inhibitor removed, the Centurion in the Hybrid's chamber seems visibly more aware of its environment. It turns its head to gaze at each member of the group as they enter, and again at Thrace as she questions the Hybrid. This contrasts with what was seen previously, when Centurions on guard duty simply stand immobile unless they perceive a threat, or are given a direct order.
* Barolay's sudden death after the Six attacks her indicates that the Six's blows and delivered concussions caused internal bleeding into Barolay's brain.
* Another aspect of Cylon culture is alluded to in regards to the importance of touch, especially amongst with how Cylons interact amongst their own specific models. For example, before Natalie executes the Six who murdered Barolay, they kiss each other. When the Eight who was shot by the Centurion is dying, she asks for Athena's forgiveness in her attempt to lead a mutiny, and stretches out her hand to touch Athena's. However, Athena refuses, and Anders steps in to provide that sense of touch before she dies. This interaction amongst the models within their own model number may be a reflection of being "with each other", especially in times of certain death. Something like this was seen earlier in "A Measure of Salvation", where the dying Cylons aboard the stricken basestar link hands in prayer.

Religion
* Even though Baltar is preaching for the "one true God", the symbolism of a boat crossing a river to the land of the dead is very similar to the Greek legends involving the River Styx. It can be expected that Baltar borrows some of his teachings from an established religion that people are familiar with. This also parallels the rise of Christianity, which adopted things from other religions, including some rites of the established Roman polytheistic religions.
* Emily Kowalski's description of the Lords of Kobol and their behavior is quite consistent with that of Greek mythology.
* When speaking of her mother's death, Laura Roslin mentions the Fields of Elysium, a portion of the Greek underworld where heroic or virtuous souls end up after death that bears a resemblance to heaven in Christianity. It appears that the Colonials view of the afterlife is almost identical to that of the ancient Greeks.
*Roslin believes that the Lords of Kobol are not to be taken seriously but are metaphors. Roslin's mother took them more literally. This mirrors real life in which some people take the Jewish Torah (Old Testament), the Christian Bible (New Testament) and the Islamic Koran as literal word for word truth and an accurate record of events, while others believe the stories are metaphors to be used as guidelines in life, but not hard pronouncements or actual history.
* The hybrid utterance "All these things at once and many more, not because it wishes harm, because it likes violent vibrations to change constantly." appears to be a paraphrase of a line from the theosophical text "At the Feet of the Master"

Characters
* The Eights' attempt to recruit Athena to lead a mutiny against the Sixes and presumably the Twos reveal an apparent character flaw that is prevalent amongst this particular model. Their ties to allegiances, loyalty to a cause are not as strong as their fellow Cylon models, should those ties and beliefs cause suffering or death.
** This is also a somewhat ironic twist, as Athena and others aboard the Demetrius were encouraging Karl Agathon to initiate their own mutiny against Thrace just hours earlier. However, Athena is likely referring to her allegiance to the Colonials as a whole, which has not diminished.
* While the Sixes and the Twos are willing to initiate the search for the Final Five because of their specific strong religious beliefs, the Eights apparently join them not because of a desire in unraveling the mystery, so much as because it grants them the opportunity to say "no" to their programming.
* Though the word "faith" is never explicitly spoken throughout the episode, multiple allusions to the idea of trust are provided through the characters' interactions with each other. This is especially evident in the multiple times the phrase "...with you" appears in the dialog. When the Eight that is shot by the Centurion is dying, Anders holds her arm and tells her that he is with her. When Roslin and Adama speak with each other, Roslin tells Adama, after he pours out his feelings of uncertainty and doubt, she tells him that she is with him.
* Athena also shows deep conflict within herself in this episode in regards to her nature as a Cylon as seen in multiple scenes. Conoy's words to her about how their trip is a "home coming" for Athena causes an immediate response. Later, when the Eights touch her and attempt to recruit her, she expresses disgust with them, but possibly including herself. Her declaration of choosing a side and sticking to it may be something she needs to hear more than they do. When Anders takes out his gun to execute the Six, it is Athena who also takes out her gun to defend the "human" and refers to herself as a human. Finally, her refusal to hold the dying Eight's hand shows a reluctance of being seen as a Cylon and that she is not with them.

Questions
* Are the Centurions capable of getting an IFF signal from a humanoid Cylon, like a Raider does? Could one have exposed Anders if he had made direct eye contact?
* What does the Hybrid's statement that the five come from the home of the thirteenth mean?
** Were they made on Earth, the home of the thirteenth tribe? Or did they voyage to Earth from Cylon/Colonial space and then return?
** Does "the thirteenth" refer to "The One Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken" mentioned in "The Eye of Jupiter", to whom the Temple of Five was dedicated?
* Will Thrace tell anyone about the Hybrid calling her "the harbinger of death"? Does anyone else hear the Hybrid's words to her?
* Will Helo and the others have to answer for their mutiny?
* How will Gaeta's injury affect his duties? Will his leg be amputated?
* What would have happened if Anders had put his hand in the data-font?
* Why should the Cylons have any trouble figuring out the Raptor's FTL system? They have previously used Raptors (Torn).
* Why are the Raiders' FTL systems unsuitable?
* How will the Fleet respond when the Demetrius returns with the shipwrecked basestar in tow?
* Without Natalie's help, would Anders have been able to pull the trigger to execute the Six?
* Does the revelation that the Final Five are from Earth and can lead the fleet to it encourage the hidden Four to reveal themselves?
* How will the Cylon rebels unbox the Threes?
* Is Natalie's baseship the last place where there are Sixs, Twos, and Eights?
* Why did the Cavils' forces leave one baseship largely intact?
* Will Barolay's death, despite the execution of the Six, affect the truce amongst the Colonials once they discover that two from the Demetrius mission are dead?
* Is Conoy the only Two left amongst the Cylon rebels?
* Why is Athena chosen to speak to the Demetrius, given that another Eight could easily impersonate her?
Noteworthy Dialogue
* An Eight discussing mutiny with Sharon Agathon:
: Sharon Agathon: You guys make me sick.
: Eight: Why?
: Agathon: Because you pick your side and you stick. You don't cut and run when things get ugly. Otherwise you'll never have anything. No love. No family. No life to call your own.

* Emily Kowalski and Laura Roslin discuss the Lords of Kobol:
: Emily Kowalski: Oh, Laura. And the Lords of Kobol are real? Reigning from a metaphysical mountaintop in those silly outfits? Zeus? Handing out fates out of an urn like they were lottery tickets? 'You're gonna work on a tylium ship. You're gonna be an admiral. Your family's gonna be evaporated in an attack on the Colonies but you'll survive for three more years on a moldy compartment on a freighter 'til your body starts to eat itself up alive.' Those are the gods that you worship? Capricious, vindictive...
: Laura Roslin: But they're not meant to be taken literally. They're metaphors, Emily.
: Kowalski: I don't need metaphors. I need answers.

* Laura Roslin on her mother's death:
: "You're like my mother. She wasn't satisfied with metaphors either. She was convinced that Aphrodite herself was gonna swoop her away when she died. And she believed it even when the diloxin and the radiation failed to stop her cancer. She was a teacher! She was... oh, she was something to behold. And the head of a classroom. And her students— Her students loved her. They'd walk through fire for her and then they see this woman who seemed so eternal. She withered away and I find myself having to change her diaper because she couldn't even— At the moment she died there was no gleaming fields of Elysium stretched out before her. There was this dark, black abyss. And she was terrified. She was so scared."

Cottle arrives with medication, but tells Roslin that Kowalski's end is near.

*Demetrius is prepping to leave as seconds count down but Agathon lets the clock run over in hesitation and to the crew's astonishment. Just as he is about to order the jump, the baseship arrives and broadcasts a Colonial identity. After communication is established, Agathon enthusiastically begins to prep both ships to leave for the Fleet.

Notes
*Baltar's radio broadcast contains a number of phrases from the "To be or not to be" soliloquy of Hamlet, including "shuffle off this mortal coil," and "the undiscover'd country, from whose bourn no traveler returns." These phrases refer to death and the afterlife, respectively.
* This episode marks the second time Laura Roslin discusses her family in any detail, and the first time viewers see an image of Roslin's mother.

* The hybrid utterance "All these things at once and many more, not because it wishes harm, because it likes violent vibrations to change constantly." appears to be a paraphrase of a line from the Theosphical text "At the Feet of the Master"

* While the Sixes and the Twos are willing to initiate the search for the Final Five because of their specific strong religious beliefs, the Eights apparently join them not because of a desire in unraveling the mystery, but because it grants them the opportunity to say "no" to their programming.

SG1 thing?
Is the SG-1 thing really necessary? After all, I'm sure that here are tons of television shows that have similar names -- for instance, I'm sure that there are shows that have episodes named "Faith". To be honest, I find nothing significant in that note. Thoughts? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 13:22, 13 October 2007 (CDT)
::Didn't know "The Ties That Bind" was like a common expression (one of the downsides of being a near-native, but still non-native, English speaker), I was under the impression it was simply a Biblical quote. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 13:49, 13 October 2007 (CDT)
:::The origin is of course that bible quote, but if you google it, you'll also find a Bruce Springsteen song and many news articles that use it. For example "The ties that bind China, Russia and Iran" or "Sony Cuts the Ties That Bind Walkman" or "Technologies to untie the ties that bind". And for TV, an episode of "The OC" shares that name too, so Stargate shouldn't be singled out. We already pay way too much attention to it with cast notes. --Serenity 13:55, 13 October 2007 (CDT)
::::We have most of the guides in act format since that's how the episode translates. While this may be easy to read, it also throws the order of the story out of whack. I figure we have to do this on a case-by-case given the number of scene shifts, so.... --Spencerian 01:15, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
:::::Not so much scene shifts, but number of independent story lines. Sometimes, there are two different settings, but heavily intercut and dependent on each other. Like the stuff in "The Eye of Jupiter" and "Rapture". One the other hand, the Caprica, Kobol and Cylon story lines stand for themselves and can have an own section. That's how we always did it. Nothing new :) -- Serenity 06:56, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Nicky Cylon or Human
I wonder if this episode shows how the story hits on pure fiction rather than sci-fi with the case of Nicky being a cylon. Nicky is a boy, which would mean there has to be a Y chromosome. If Tyrol is truly a Cylon, then Cally could only have a female child. They stated earlier in the series that the skinjobs could not reproduce without human donors. Reading the sci-fi forums and original series (way back to deception to the Cylons/Baltar by Specter, and how the Beings of Light 'try' not to interfere) may provide a spoiler to what is to come next from this episode if it stays on the sci-fi side. If it goes fiction, maybe it be worth noting what made Nicky a boy and a cylon before someone yells "that's not sci-fi!" (The Science Note: women can reproduce women without men in genetic experiments of fertilization, but women do not carry/make the Y chromosome to reproduce a male.) (Podcast note: ) Dzonatas 21:02, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
:They did not state anything about human donors. They stated that Cylons could not reproduce with each other, and could not reproduce with humans unless there was love. Cally and Tyrol love each other, imperfect as their marriage might be, so Nicky was conceived like Hera. No reason he shouldn't have a Cylon Y chromosome. -- Noneofyourbusiness 21:40, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
:::RDM has stated the the final five are fundamentally different than the others, so what is know about the significant seven may not apply. -- FrankieG 21:47, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
::::Plus, what is known about the signficant seven doesn't rule it out. -- Noneofyourbusiness 21:55, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
:::::So, we can say that Nicky is fundamentally different when compared to Hera. The plot just grows more from this episode about them and brings questions, but the difference can be noted on the Nicky or Hera page. I was going to add something to the article, but I felt it was better to wait another episode. Thanks -- Dzonatas 03:17, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Inappropriate use of Point of Order?
According to Robert's Rules of Order, a Point of Order is raised if the rules of order have apparently been broken. In this case, rules don't seem to have been broken, and Lee is really just interrupting to bring up his own issues (which could be construed as out of order). The closest motion that I could find is a Request for Any Other Privilege, which he would then use to try to bring up a more pressing issue, but this is still an iffy case. Ctetc2007 10:56, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
:Standing-up at the table is a request to yield. The one who has the floor is the one who can decide to yield the floor. If Lee continued without the floor being yielded to him, then it would be out of order. Notice that Lee does ask for the floor to yield. The point of order is to get the answer to yield the floor and to quiet everybody else that does not have the floor. Roslin immediately tabled the issue that Lee brought up. Lee sits down, and the floor is returned. He could have requested an immediate call to vote to handle the issue, but typically it would have to be by some disastrous or emergency situation to call to vote on non-agenda items. Why didn't he make that case at that time? Dzonatas 14:51, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Monitoring Launch Tubes
The reason nobody notices the launch tubes being used is probably due to the Galactica's lack of automation. There's no central computer to track these things, and the over-worked state of Galactica's repair crew probably means that the logs that would track these things (assuming there's a counter at all) aren't being kept properly.

Of course, this doesn't explain why there wouldn't be guards.

— Benabik 01:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

:Well, at least they already established that nobody was paying attention to the launch tubes in last season's "Collaborators"... --Peter Farago 05:08, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
::Poor Jammer. :( Shane (talk) 05:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

: This might be indeed a flaw by design, but one that they should have fixed after the first Cylon war. The Cylons boarded ships via airlocks and launch tubes and used them as weapon to vent the crew out of the ship. In such a situation the security team etc. should know where to look for the enemy. --Akagi 10:54, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

:Well, would YOU want to guard the launch tubes? 99% of the time you'd just be standing there in an empty control room (at least at night), not to mention the fact that since there are quite a few launch tubes, you'd be tying up a significant number of personnel doing so. It seems like it'd be easier in terms of manpower to have guards somewhere in the hangar deck (potentially in intersection of the hangar deck(s) and the interior of the ship). By guarding the choke points, you'd be covered against somebody coming from any of the launch tubes, and from the landing bay openings as well. Though obviously the biggest reason the launch tubes are untended are for dramatic purposes. --Steelviper 13:48, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
::Nobody said there had to be humans watching the launch tubes, you'd be 'watching' them electronically, just like building security monitors elevator movements. If they did that and logged all activity, they'd find out Cally's launch tube was spaced from the control room and know she didn't commit suicide. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 14:01, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
:::Well, that Cally did not commit suicide is something that a good criminal investigator would find out anyway - Cally has to trigger the launch tube from inside by use this little key. This key should still be in the launch tube. --Akagi 14:20, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
:::True, but you know what happens when you put "machines" in charge of things... Closed circuit monitoring would of course be sensible. And if they wanted to get into all that, they could alter the logs and substitute in bogus footage, etc. When your conspiracy includes the Chief and the XO, there's not a lot of limits to what you could cover up. I guess they didn't want to get into that. --Steelviper 14:32, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
I myself have decided to suspend disbelief on this particular issue. I find it fairly unbelievable that there isn't an automated system that would at least inform CIC that a "launch" had taken place. Also, this is a military ship on a war footing; I'm sure they have plenty of bored marines who could be patrolling the ship, especially sensitive areas like launch tubes and airlocks. JubalHarshaw 20:07, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
:Well it kinda depends on how detailed the data is that arrives at CIC: they may know that the launch tube was flushed, but they may not be able to tell whether it was operated from the inside or the outside (which would be of little use outside murder investigations). --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 20:23, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Can We compare Adama to President George....Washington? :)
I was reading the quote from Eick, "...Adama begins to believe that on some level he might have been responsible for provoking the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies." and for some reason I felt that thie reminded me of Gorge Washington long before we was president or even commander-in-chief when, before the 7-Years-War, Washington was involved in a skirmish with the French over Fort Necessity, aka Pittsburgh (yes, we fought a battle for that city) that led to Washington signing a treaty stating, unbeknownst to him because he couldn't speak French and his interpreter sucked, that he committed attrocities against France in the name of the British Empire. This, according to many historians, led to the 7 Years War, known in America as the French and Indian War, that would decimate Northern Germany. I'm sure Washington at some level had to be aware of this error on his part and led him to remorse I imagine. Anyways, the story is different but I was wondering how many parallels there will be, if there will be, in this episode to Washington's conundrum. I wanted to ask a question on the article page but couldn't concise it enough for wiki standards. I may ask on the scifi bboard but input on this would be appreciated before I do. --StrayCat0 19:42, 3 August 2006 (PST)
:That's an interesting analogy, showing a fine attention to historical detail. I think the parallel has minor flaws, though, since Washington's conduct in that matter isn't generally considered morally wrong so much as foolish. Gavrilo Princip might be worth considering as a parallel; he was the immediate but not ultimate cause of a devastating war, and he precipitated the conflict by attacking his fellow countryman, thinking it justified in contrast to the general consensus. --CalculatinAvatar(C-T) 02:28, 4 August 2006 (CDT)
:: It's unlikely that Adama's actions are quite the transgression that he believes it to be; after all, the Cylons had been violating the armistice line for about a half a year prior to Adama's, anyway.TaKometer 02:09, 18 November 2006 (CST)
::: I was wondering about the timeline as well. I think Adama says somthing like, the mission was a year before the attack, but the cylons had been planning the attack for two years. However, I think there is an error in the timeline. Adama also says he served with Boomer for two years, and I think he implied that it was on Galactica. Gaeta also says that he served with Adama for three years. It is possible that Gaeta was on the Valkyrie for a year, but I think the mission happened about two years before the attack, not just one. :::: I think there is an inconsistency in the story. : The Valkerie looked to be a Mercury class Battlestar. This would make sense because the galactica class was an older ship and has been all but replaced with the newer bigger and more efficent Mercury class.--Mike 09:30, 18 November 2006 (CST)
::It's definately not a Mercury, the only part really similar is the engine block. If anything, it looked most like a reimagining of the original series battlestar, down to the rectangular opening in the flightpod and the angular head. --Talos 09:47, 18 November 2006 (CST)
::Inside it looks like a Mercury yes. That's a sign of its age. But outside, it's far smaller than a full-sized battlestar. Look at the gun battery on the top. There's only one and almost covers the width of the ship there. See the Valkyrie page for more details (where this discussion should take place), but I think it's basically a smaller battlestar meant for support duties. --Serenity 09:52, 18 November 2006 (CST)
:: Not disagreeing with your main point, but its quite possible that there were far more Battlestar classes than just the "Cylon War Type" and the Mecurcy class, given that the colonies built up a fleet of arround 120 Battlestars over about 50 years, particularly as the Viper apparently went through 5 different itterations over this time, although we are likely never going to see the intervening versions of either type --Useless 09:55, 18 November 2006 (CST)
The fact that Baltar and Six are in a 'clutch' position makes it unlikely that it's his internal Six. Three would have noticed Baltar trying to hug thin air in his sleep. Baltar is also in the center of the bed, rather than on one side. In addition, Caprica seems to be aware of (and approves) Three's new interest in Baltar. Regarding the possibility of a relationship between Three and Six: that is only speculation, but just because we haven't seen a lesbian relationship between cylons doesn't mean one isn't possible.Dallan007 22:18, 19 November 2006 (CST)
:It could be that Caprica-Six sees this as a way to weaken Baltar--after all, the formula for getting Baltar to give up secrets seems pretty clear: get in his bed, get in his head, so to speak. Remember that during the torture in previous episodes, he said to Three, "I love you with all of my heart." That's what started the relationship, so I think Three is interested in Baltar for whatever reason, not necessarily Six. ==The Black Ops Mission==
Does anyone think that the entire mission was poorly concieved? First, the Colonials jump a Battlestar to very close range of the armistice line, which one would expect to attract attention in and of itself. Second, we see the Valkyrie track the S-Star after launch and over the line. This either means the Valkyrie tracked it directly on DRADIS, which indicates it's not much of a stealth ship and that the Cylons should be able to detect it as well, or the S-Star has some sort of transponder reporting its position, which is also something the Cylons should detect. Finally, as referenced in the main article, the S-Star maintains radio contact with the Valkyrie throughout the whole mission, again something the Cylons should be able to detect. Would the writers have really overlooked all this, or are we meant to conclude that the Admriality meant for the mission to have been discovered by the Cylons? --Cleophus 22:55, 18 November 2006 (CST)

:-The mission is quite similar to the United States' U2 overflights during the late 1950's and 60's. Certain similarities between the depicted incident and the incident involving Francis Gary Powers can be read. It also conjures up several dozen observation flights by aircraft such as specially outfitted C-130's flying perilously close to a boundary line — even going so far as to slip a wingtip across it to "call a bluff". Also, there's the incident involving the Chinese Gai-8 fighter and the US P-3 Orion.
:In the case of our Colonials here, the stealth craft is more than likely equipped with an "odd frequency" (either very low or very high), encrypted transponder that transmits on a specific wavelength, only for IFF purposes. If I recall correctly, F-117 Nighthawks can still use their radios when on ops (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I suspect that this mission was proposed in order to get a glimpse into any Cylon activity. The stealth craft would be dangled out as a tiny bit of bait – just enough to get a response. Its stealth characteristics would increase its ability to dash back across the Armistice Line untracked and unaffected, and then Valkyrie would be able to observe and record the arriving Cylons. If questions were raised ("What are you doing here?" ... "Good question, what are you doing here?" ... "We detected you over the Armistice Line." ... "Who, us? Noooo... We've been on our side this whole time, just trolling about, watching over our miners over there on that moon there. So why are you here again? You don't mind if we take some photos of you while you're here, do you?"), the Colonials would feign ignorance and innocence, but they'd at least have a response... something that the Cylons haven't even projected in thirty-plus years. -- Hawke 11:59, 19 November 2006 (CST)

:--Is it possible that the Stealth Star was shot down by a Colonial Force in hopes that it would percipitate a conflict? Similar to the Gulf of Tonkin? This way the Colonials can say one of their ships got lost and was destroyed by the Cylons in cold blood (Or something along those lines). Also, it makes no sense a ship would jump in, shoot the S-Star, and jump out. Why wouldnt it commit to killin the S-Star? --Skrip00 16:31, 20 November 2006 (CST)
Folks in White Robes
Aren't there five white-robed figures in Number Three's vision? It's pretty speculative, but maybe these are meant to represent the five missing Cylon models (maybe they've undergone some kind of transcendence, and are "with God now" or something). Maybe the article should note this (after all, the white-robes show up for the first time just a couple episodes after we first learn that there's definitely something different or mysterious about the five missing models), though I don't know the proper section for it. Steve

::Well I agree she's in the opera house from KLG, but I don't think I'm referring to the drapes. I'm new here, so I didn't want to jump right into the thick of things by adding this to the main page before running it by other people...when Adama and Novacek are sitting down for the first time, Adama asks him something like "How did you escape, Bulldog?". Novacek rambles for a little bit (again, I don't remember exact words) but wraps up with "I felt the facility no longer had anything to offer me...". == Insight into Cylon plan ==
If the Cylons know where the Colonials are, or at least know well enough to send Bulldog at them, it's common sense to ask, why don't they just attack? Well, maybe their goal isn't to destroy Galactica et al outright but something more complex. One thing that does seem consistent with their plan is their desire to kill Adama, perhaps because they want to send the fleet into disarray without him at the top. Examples: Leoben telling Roslin that Adama's a Cylon in Flesh and Blood, Boomer shooting Adama repeatedly in Kobol's Last Gleaming Pt. II. There may be more examples that I can't think of right now.

People have been crying out "plot hole!" with reckless abandon in light of Bulldog's ability to pinpoint Galactica's position, but if the Cylon plan really is as simple as kill all humans, as these detractors might claim, then much of the show falls apart. The reality is, we don't really know the Cylon plan, and at this point, there's really no reason to jump to the conclusion that the writers are just too lazy to think of one. Drumstick 18:22, 19 November 2006 (CST)
:The Cylons might know full well where the Colonials are but if they jumped in a couple of Basestars then the fleet would zip out of there pretty sharpish and might go somewhere where the Cylons dont know and they will have to find them all over again. IMO, their plan is a long game. --Mercifull (Talk/Contribs) 19:17, 19 November 2006 (CST)
:IMHO, "Hero" is the weakest episode of the series yet. There's just too many logic errors for me to dismiss as part of the "suspension of disbelief" process. For instance, how does Bulldog have the time to learn how to pilot a Cylon raider, when Starbuck took hours to figure out how to operate the thing? Also, how would Bulldog be able to operate the FTL drive -- Kobol's Last Gleaming pretty much made it clear that the FTL drive needed an actual computer, given that the brain had to be ripped out in order for it to be piloted manually. But that's another not so fine mess.
: As for the Cylon plans, well, they're clearly compliated and seem to be changing since the attack. Whether or not this is by design has yet to be detrmined, though I sincerely doubt that the writer's have this thing all planned out a la Babylon 5. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 22:30, 19 November 2006 (CST)

::Yeah, I know what you're saying. I also doubt it's all planned out B5-style (hasn't Ron basically said something to that effect anyway, like how much they enjoy making it up as they go along?), but that doesn't mean it necessarily can't all add up in the end, and we should assume that they do know what they are doing until they are proven wrong.

::Also, a lot of people have been talking about how unrealistic it is for Bulldog to have learned how to operate the raider in such a short time. I'm not trying to start an arguement about this, but I don't actually remember them saying that he had only a short time to learn how to use the raider. Are you guys just assuming that he had to learn it all quickly based on the rushed nature of his escape? Is there a reason he couldn't have actually had a few hours to do it? I mean, if they let him escape, then he could have been in the basestar hangar for hours trying to work the controls while they watched (and snickered) from behind the glass. --Drumstick 23:59, 19 November 2006 (CST)

:I agree that a lot of people have seemed predisposed to cry foul lately--I can understand how the scientific goofs in "A Measure of Salvation" could've set people on edge--but I do think it's possible that if the Cylons are operating under a religious motivation, that their plan does go beyond a simple "kill all humans" approach. They may see the need to exact specific steps of revenge/torture against humanity, perhaps a particular punishment for each perceived offense. That's just one possibility, but it could well be they have the death of a thousand cuts in mind for the remnants of humanity. I think Drumstick's probably on to something here. Or you know, if they wanted Bulldog to escape, they could have trained a Raider (which wasn't injured like Starbuck's) to understand and obey his commands or even set it up with an interface that a human could use. Until we see proof or disproof of all the different theories, I think it's too early to try to claim BsG has jumped the shark or anything similar. I also have to wonder if anybody here has writing experience with writing a full-length work. I am working on my first novel, and keeping total, perfect consistency is not easy and while I tend to get the big things right, I am still finding a lot of subtle things that need tweaking, and this despite my best efforts. Rose Immortal 13:17, 20 November 2006 (CST)
:As an aside wrt the Cylon plan, Browndog's question from the Episode page:
:I think that it's plausable considering the roles that Boomer and Doral were playing at the time that their both being on Galactica at the time of the Attack is simply a coincidence. Short of conspiracy within the Fellt Boomer is asigned where she's needed, and Doral's position as a civil servant would have been a good cover for a Cylon spy.--Whyte Wolf 20:01, 23 November 2006 (CST)
Possible Discontinuity
According to the episode, Adama and friends served on the Valkyrie a year before the attacks. This implies that Adama was only commander of the Galactica for a year before the miniseries. Yet on the Kara Thrace article, it states that Thrace "resigned from flight school as a instructor and transferred as an operational pilot aboard battlestar Galactica under the command of William Adama, where she served for some two years prior to the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies." They can't both be right.

Also, from the Tyrol article: "He served aboard battlestars from the age of eighteen, including Columbia, Atlantia, and Pegasus (Resistance). He has served under William Adama on Galactica for five years (Litmus)." If he served under Adama for 5 years, why didn't he mention the Valkyrie when he was being intimidated by Tigh in Resistance? This could be simply because Tigh would have known that.--Drumstick 22:16, 19 November 2006 (CST)
:No, your first impulse is correct - it's quite certainly an error.
:Gaeta: And... may I take this opportunity to say that it's been both a pleasure and an honour to serve under you [Adama], these past three years. (Miniseries)
:--Peter Farago 01:48, 20 November 2006 (CST)

::It is quite possible that this is not an error per se. Adama and some of his command staff could easily have been assigned to the more modern Valkyrie from Galactica for the mission. It wouldn't make much sense to send "the bucket" on a stealth mission anyway. Notice Valkyrie seemed smaller and was probably more modernized, which would make it all the better for that type of mission. So Adama could easily have been in command of Galactica for several years prior, been offered command of Valkyrie as a reward, for career advancement or just for the mission... and have been pushed back to Galactica when the mission failed. Certainly the plan to decommission Galactica was in the works for some time, and they would not want one of their good commanders to retire with the ship... until after the mission where he failed. None of the characters would be expected to say "I served under Adama for some years, and some other guy for a couple of months, then Adama again." They would just say they served with him for X number of years. If we compare to the modern US Navy, this sort of thing is not all the uncommon.--Xealot 10:22, 20 November 2006 (CST)
:::The dossier's progression from XO of Columbia to Commander of Valkyrie to Commander of Galactica seems to indicate that Valkyrie was his first battlestar command. Though I agree that the serve under "X years" would fly if they stayed under him. It's just the "this ship"'s that start biting them. (When they specify the ship instead of the command.) --Steelviper 10:53, 20 November 2006 (CST)

::It's really embarassing in continuity. If they had put the entire affair a few years further into the past, it would have made much more sense not only in Adamas biography, but also in the overall plot. Boomer served on Galactica for two years and probably spend some additional time at flight school, so Adama must know the Cylon infiltration started long before the Stealth-Star incident. This should really get Adama to ask himself how long the attack had been planned, though he might convince himself that the Cylons put their infiltrators in place just as a precaution and his actions led to their decision to actually use them. A few years more time between the attack and the incident would put the estimated start of Cylon infiltration (which actually could be anywhere between 2 and 20 years before the attack) around the same time, giving Adama a far more powerful reason to believe that he started it right there. I would like to think that putting the incident one year before attack was just an accident, but then it would probably become even more difficult to explain how Bulldog survived that long.

::Another point that's problematic: did Valkyrie have an integrated computer-network? Up to this episode all information we had suggested that all battlestars save Galactica had them and that it was Adamas position of no network on my ship that prevented an upgrade.

::*If Valkyrie had a network Adamas politics of it's all hand on here are somewhat harder to believe. Up to now it looked like the position of a war-veteran who opposed networks on principle, this is harder to believe if he already commanded a ship with such a network.

::*If there was no network on Valkyrie, then why wasn't there one? It appears extremely unlikely that the networks were all installed in the time between the incident and the attack, though the decision cannot have been made to long before Adama took command of Galactica, because the previous commander would probably have had it installed. And given that it must have been a major decision to put networks on battlestars once more it's hard to believe that the Admirality would allow commanders to pull the plug on it as they see fit. I can imagine Adamas opposition being tolerated on Galactica, because it was an old battlestar nearing it's decommissioning with a design that may have been especially hard to upgrade (regardless of Gaetas patchwork in Scattered). They could have simply decided that it was not worth the effort to force Adama to accept the upgrade. But that would be hard to believe for Valkyrie, if you are sending a battlestar on such a sensitive mission you want it at maximum performance. Nevfennas 14:49, 20 November 2006 (CST)

:::The network thing isn't hugely problematic. We have no notion of how old Valkyrie was. Atlantia was at least 17 years old at the time of the attack (based on Adama's dossier), and was still worthy to serve as Nagala's flagship in the Miniseries. Galactica was even older. --Peter Farago 01:44, 21 November 2006 (CST)

:Adama's dossier may or may not help matters. If the screencap interpretation in the article is correct, then it is currently 21356 - based on the 45th anniversary of Adama's commissioning - which is consistent with what we know about Colonial Day and the Armistice. Therefore the Fall of the Colonies occurred in 21354, and that means the Valkyrie incident occurred in 21353 or thereabouts. However, the dossier goes on to state that Adama took command of Valkyrie in 21345, and Galactica in 21348. If the dossier is correct, then the Valkyrie incident had to take place in 21347 or 21348...which means that Adama's "graceful retirement" lasted for 6 years until the Fall. If this timeline is correct, then it basically blows all the dialogue in this episode out of the water, but validates everything we've seen and heard in the first two seasons. Of course, this is all contingent on the dossier being correctly interpreted - and I personally cannot make out the last two dates on screen. --Xenophon10k 19:55, 21 November 2006 (CST)

::That was the conclusion we came to above. The Dossier is entirely legible and is visible on screen for over sixty frames. --Peter Farago 22:31, 21 November 2006 (CST)

:::I missed that part. That image is a lot clearer than the screenshot I had, as well. --Xenophon10k 10:24, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Cylon detector problems
There's some inconsistency with the "Cylon Detector" that Doc Cottle used to determine that Bulldog was a human. First of all, if you look at the screen caps, this one, you can see that the screen says "-RESULTS NEGATIVE-" If he was testing the DNA against their military records, it should say "-RESULTS POSITIVE-" If it's negative, the DNA doesn't match. That, or it's supposed to be a Cylon Detector, and it's saying that he's not a Cylon. It seems like it could be a simple goof between dialogue and props.

However, going along with the DNA reasoning... that doesn't necessarily prove anything, does it? If they tested Boomer's DNA against the DNA they have on record for her, I assume it's going to match, since they probably took Cylon DNA initially. Who's to say that the same thing didn't happen to Bulldog? In that case, his DNA would match, but he'd be a Cylon. Seems like a poor determiner of race, that's all. I don't think that he's necessarily a Cylon, just that this is another "oops."

--It might prove something...if the Colonials have DNA records going all the way back to a person's birth. If they're matching against that kind of original record (heck, maybe they even have the parents' records, too), then that may well constitute proof. *Dualla apparently served on the Valkyrie; she can be seen in the background standing behind Adama and Tigh in the flashback scenes.
**That person in the scene is most likley not Dualla; it's not easy to see because the flashback-scenes in the CIC have (deliberatly) not the best quality.
Whytwolfhttps://en.battlestarwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:A_Day_in_the_Life/Archive_1&diff=92125Talk:A Day in the Life/Archive 12006-11-19T20:46:27Z
Whytwolf: /* Continuity */

Continuity
On 11 October, the Patriot Resource reported:

Adama and Caroline split after he received his first command. Lee indicates that she turned on him and Zak. Adama seems surprised, but Lee points out that Caroline was already pregnant with him when she and Adama got married. [This implies that they may not have married out of love and that she might blame Lee's conception for the unhappy marriage.]

If this report is correct, it contradicts what we have learned about William Adama's early years in the episodes "Act of Contrition" and "Scattered". To wit:
*Two women have been named as Adama's wife - Caroline Adama, in "Act of Contrition", identified as Lee and Zak's mother, and Anne Adama, in "Scattered", referred to as William's "new wife" in a flashback scene set 20 years prior to the series (and presuming Lee Adama is meant to be in his late 20s/early 30s, well after his birth).
*It is stated in "Scattered" that Adama still aspires to command of his own battlestar - he only achieved it during his second stint in the Colonial Fleet, with the help of Anne's father.
*This report, however, seems to indicate that William and Caroline were still together when Adama received his first command, and makes no mention of Anne.
*In a photograph featured prominently in several episodes, a William Adama much younger than the one seen in "Scattered" is featured with Lee and Zak, who are already preteens. This means that the "new wife" referred to in "Scattered" cannot be their mother under a different name.
Possible solutions:
*"Scattered" only stated that Adama had not yet commanded a battlestar - it is possible that the command assignment which caused his rift with Caroline (before his furlough, and the events of "Scattered") was a smaller ship.
--Peter Farago 13:25, 13 October 2006 (CDT)
*Considering the information from Adama's bio that was provided to the Pressident when she first came aboard Galactica, it's likely that Adama's first command (as mentioned above) isn't that of a ship--but instead of a viper squadron. That might even explain the photo of Lee and Zak and their father infront of the Viper--taken when Adama received command of Primus Squadron? In the modern US Navy, Carrier commanders must have been naval aviators and commanded a squadron prior to receiving a carrier CO slot--the Colonials may not be that different, considering a Battlestar is esentially a giant carrier in space. --Whyte Wolf 14:46, 19 November 2006 (CST)
Whytwolfhttps://en.battlestarwiki.org/w/index.php?title=A_Measure_of_Salvation&diff=90962A Measure of Salvation2006-11-12T06:23:32Z
Whytwolf: /* Notes */

:Apollo and Athena are dispatched to interrogate the dying Cylons on board the infected baseship, and learns how Baltar is helping their adversaries; the virus inspires Lee to come up with a new strategy.
Summary
On Galactica
*A boarding party comprising of Raptors and vipers investigate the derelict basestar. Among the boarding party are Lee Adama and Athena.
*Aboard the derelict, marines explore the corridors, finding the humano-cylon models dead. Athena attempts to access the derelict basestar's Hybrid, but was unsuccessful.
*Some "skinjobs" around the control center begin to revive, and advise the boarding party of the situation regarding the probe and subsequent infection of the Cylons. One of the infected Cylons, a Number Eight, addresses Athena as "traitor".
*The boarding party and prisoners are en route back to Galactica when the derelict explodes.
*The boarding party and prisoners are quarantined while Major Cottle finds out if the virus affects humans. The human members of the boarding party are cleared while Athena is ordered to stay put, as her blood work hasn't been done. Helo is infuriated, but wants to be notified as soon as her results are available.
*Major Cottle begins investigating the survivors, who advises that the virus can be treated, but not cured for Cylons. President Roslin, Admiral Adama, Apollo, and Helo discuss the idea of taunting the vaccine in exchange for information. A Simon is brought before them, and informs them that the entire baseship was abandoned, because resurrection would infect the others. He also mentions that Baltar provided the information towards Earth.
*Aboard Colonial One, Apollo details a plan of possibly eliminating the entire Cylon race, by executing them in range of a Resurrection Ship. Helo scoffs at the idea, considering it genocide. President Roslin informed the two that she will consider both viewpoints.
*Aboard Galactica, Athena finds she's immune due to carrying Hera. Helo discusses the proposed plan, and Athena understands. At the same time, Admiral Adama discusses the issue with Roslin on Colonial One, saying the attack can't proceed without presidential order. Despite the ethical ramifications, the President authorizes the biological attack.
*Galactica jumps to a Cylon supply line, and launches Vipers and Raptors to draw a basestar and Resurrection Ship. In the midst of this, Helo initiates a plan to thwart the execution, unplugging what looks like a standard power connector from an environmental control box.
*The Cylons jump into the area, with Resurrection Ship in tow. Adama orders the execution of the prisoners.
*Apollo leads a team to execute the prisoners, but finds that all the prisoners have been killed prior to the Resurrection Ship arriving. Adama orders a recall, and Galactica jumps away without sustaining any major damage.
*Helo converses with Athena about what he did. He maintains that what he did was right, regardless of the consequences.
*Aboard Galactica, Adama reports that the prisoners were suffocated due to a failure in the environmental controls. Roslin is quick to point out one or two might be responsible, but Adama closes the issue. Subsequently, the virus was most likely an accidental exposure, similar to one reported 3000 years ago. Adama points out that they're on the right track to Earth, but Roslin points out so are the Cylons.

On a basestar
*Aboard the bastestar, Baltar is being interrogated by Three and Caprica-Six, knowing about the beacon. Three and Caprica-Six imply that Baltar is connected to the virus and to Galactica. Baltar attempts to reconcile, only to be confronted by Centurions.
*In his "projection", his mental Six tells him to relax. Meanwhile, his body is being subjected to torture; Caprica Six is visibly disturbed by the torture and backs away.
*Baltar's torture continues as Three continues to interrogate Baltar regarding his supposed involvement with the virus. In his mind, he attemps to avert the pain by making love to his mental Six. Despite extreme pain, Baltar endures.

Questions
* Will Caprica-Six continue to stand by and permit Baltar's mistreatment at their hands?
* Where is Caprica-Six's own internal Baltar in all of this?
* Of the Cylons, which type told the basestar to self-destruct: The Hybrid or a Cylon agent? Considering her odd look after the destruction, might it have been Athena?
**The basestar itself was infected so it's possible no one ordered it to it just went on it's own since so many systems were corrupted that Athena said that she was having a hard time bringing anything up. I doubt that she or anyone else could have set the self-destruct, first of all they made it sound like the Hybrid wasn't really in any condition to do anything (they said that she was infected first followed by the whole ship which meant she was probably either already dead or much farther gone then the few living Cylons that were probably the last ones to be infected) and those remaining Cylon agents didn't look like they were in any condition to get up and go over to a control panel.
* What kind of new start are the Cylons planning for Earth? Just a new home planet, an attempt at human Cylon relations not tainted by the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, or something else?
* Why did an entire Cylon fleet (including a Resurrection Ship) jump to the encounter with Galactica? Why was the Resurrection Ship not left behind somewhere else, as it was done in previous battles?
* Is D'anna in love with Baltar?
* Why is Gaeta so surprised to hear that Baltar is alive, given the fact that he was actually there when D'Anna offered Baltar to be evacuated from New Caprica?
**For all Gaeta knew, sending Baltar to stop D'anna from blowing up New Caprica City had been a death sentence. Baltar could have been killed by D'anna in self-defense, or by other Cylons if he had killed her. At the very least, the Cylons would have punished him by simply leaving him to die on New Caprica. No one in the Fleet could know that Hera had stopped D'anna from setting off the bomb, or that Caprica-Six had stopped Baltar from shooting D'anna.
* Why does Simon so quickly claim science can not provide a solution to the infection?
**Perhaps he believes that there really is no cure since the other Cylons abandoned them to die without hope of returning.
* How can an encephalitis virus be downloaded in a data stream?
**Simon mentioned that the pathogen contained a bioelectric feedback component which corrupts their brains and immune systems.
**While a biofeedback component may disrupt the downloading of the infected individual, it would seem the physical presence the virus would still be required to transmit the infection from one individual to the next. This was apparently a naturally occuring encephalitis virus and not a manufactured weapon with combined biological and technological components.
* Why wasn't the execution squad in place and waiting with the prisoners so the plan could have been implemented in a timely manner?
* Since the plan was to execute the prisoners then jump away, why wasn't the jump drive already spun up and ready?
**They probably didn't expect to have to jump away that quickly so they didn't keep it going.
* The environmental controls seem to have been circumvented by Karl Agathon pulling a single plug. In a combat ship aren't there cascading fail safe systems to protect against such catastrophic failures from simple system malfunctions?
** Karl could have sabotaged more than the single plug we were shown. Of course, this explanation isn't supported by any on-screen evidence, so it is fan rationalization at best.
* In his discussion with Laura Roslin at the end of the episode, Admiral Adama is aware that sabotage was involved in the death of the Cylon prisoners, yet he states there will be no investigation. While he might be relieved that the plan wasn't carried out, wouldn't he be seriously concerned and want to aggressively pursue this matter?
**Considering the "one or two people" likely to have done it, Adama probably isn't very concerned at all.
**This should make it even more concerning. Subverting his authority and promoting anarchy on his ship during a combat mission are serious actions. It is extremely out of character for Adama to allow these to occur without taking strong corrective steps.
*Why was Sharon Agathon kept in quarantine after Cottle determined that humans were immune? Whether infected or not, she couldn't have transmitted the disease to anyone else.
** It could be that Cottle was saying that she had to remain in sickbay so he could further examine her rather than stay in quarantine to avoid spreading the infection.

Analysis
*The Cylons could have cured themselves of this plague relatively quickly, if Galactica had succeeded in infecting them. It was quickly noted in the episode that Sharon was immune herself because fetal cells from Hera created effective antibodies against the virus. Hera is immune to the virus because she is a hybrid Human-Cylon. Now that she is in custody of the Cylons, Baltar could have utilized her immunity, as he previously did on Roslin, as capital to further his self-preservation amongst them.
*The wider implications of such an event could have been religiously meaningful to the Cylons. Cylons have time and again shown religious deference by sometimes overlooking rational explinations. By saving the Cylon race Hera could have been elevated to messiah status, if her very creation has not already ordained her as one to the Cylons because their God proclaimed her creation.
*There is a fundamental flaw in the plan Apollo develops: Even if the virus successfully infects the Resurrection Ship, the other Cylons would isolate that individual ship, thus preventing a widespread epidemic. The resulting impact on the Cylon fleet would be no greater than previous destruction of the Resurrection Ship in "Resurrection Ship, Part II".
**Apollo's plan is based on an account of the Cylon analysis of the threat; he could simply assume they are correct and that the virus can spread like wildfire from one Resurrection Ship to another.
*In this episode, Raptors are shown loaded to the teeth with weapons systems. In the past (Miniseries, The Hand of God), Raptors have rarely been depicted in actual combat, preferring instead to hang back while coordinating battlefield logistics. They have been shown armed in a few prior episodes (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II, Fragged), but this is by far their most prominent combat role to date. The Raptors are using the external missile pods and cannons introduced in "Exodus, Part I & II" and engage in the same maneuver used to launch the decoy drones during the Battle of New Caprica.
*Helo has been promoted to the rank of Captain, as evident in both dialogue and costuming.
*The genetic pool the skinjobs were created from predates the human immunity to the plague from just a couple hundred years ago, yet the Cylons, even as a class of machines, are only 40 to 60 years old. This indicates another, non-colonial, source for the DNA.

Notes
*Fleet population is 41,420. Barring any births, there is an unaccounted loss of at least two since "Torn".
*The story behind the Lion Nebula beacon and the virus may have been inspired by the lunar lander Surveyor 3. Before launching in 1967, its camera was accidentally contaminated by a common bacterium. When the camera was recovered by Apollo 12 astronauts, the microbes returned to life, having survived two and a half years of vacuum, radiation, and temperature extremes.
*This is the first episode in which Saul Tigh has not appeared. Currently, the only characters to have appeared in every episode are Laura Roslin and William Adama.
*Dr. Cottle identifies the disease as Lymphocytic Encephalitis, however encephalitis is a condition (swelling of the brain) that can be caused by a pathogen, not a pathogen itself. More likely the pathogen is wikipedia:Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Overview
