Dear Mr. Beaudoin:

I did not realise that you had begun (in your words) a massive fucking rewrite to the Humanoid Cylon speculation page when I added another paragraph to the Duala analysis, concerning her ethnicity. It is, of course, still there on the regular Humanoid Cylon speculation page, but not on your reboot in progress.

Good luck on the re-write. That page could certainly use it and, admitedly, I caused some of the mess.

Sincerely,

David A. Miley
new around here

: David, call me Joe. :) Anyway, I'm undergoing the re-write... obviously, I'm going to bring it up for discussion on the talk page, since I'm sure it's gonna get revised repeatedly. Basically, the page will assume that Three is telling the truth and that the Last Cylon isn't in the Fleet, and is therefore elsewhere. Which means it isn't Dualla, Cottle, an Adama, or really anyone in the Fleet. Also, Ron has basically re-confirmed just recently that none of the people in The Last Supper picture, so everyone in that is thrown out, including Baltar and Roslin. Anyway, read the page, let me know what you think. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 22:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Joe:

Well, that all makes sense. Don't forget to delete the bullet point about Sharon under the esoteric theories at the bottom, now that she has a whole section.
re: Which Richard Thompson?
Hi Joe,

I don't think Richard is currently listed on the IMDb. However, he and I were sitting on the set the other day, and he was trying to remember the name his character had been given. He couldn't think of it, so I decided to do a search of the Marines on the wiki, and lo and behold, there he was.

Richard started playing a Marine in season 1, and has continued to do so right up through the finale, which we're filming right now.

The civilians aboard are protesting Roslin's removal from the presidency, the declaration martial law and the dissolving of the Quorum of Twelve, by hindering an effort to resupply Galactica. During the protest, where coffee and other objects are thrown at the boarding party, the Marines hear what they think to be a gunshot. Believing that they are under attack, they fire into the crowd, until Palladino manages to weakly regain control of the situation after the damage had been inflicted (Resistance).

Reporter D'anna Biers later hypes the incident as the "Gideon Massacre" to try to turn civilian opinion against Galactica (Final Cut).
Sergeant or warrant officer
A recent edit added the following:
:* Sgt. Hadrian is mistakenly referred to as a Marine in fandom and various forums. In reality the position of Master-at-Arms is a Warrant Officer position in the Navy. The rank designation of Sergeant coincides with various military structures found throughout the world, such as the Royal Air Force which has Flight Sergeant as a Warrant Officer rank.

:* On the set of Battlestar Galactica, all departments (such as props, wardrobe, assistant directors) have designated the khaki uniforms as belonging to Warrant Officers, such as the one worn by Hadrian.

Warrant officer is a rank, not a position, function or service branch - warrant officers form a corps within a branch, along with officers and enlisted. Given RDM's practice of largely following naval customs (and where it doesn't directly conflict the older series), sergeant rank is associated with marines. Furthermore, in the RAF, flight sergeant is considered a senior non-commissioned officer rank.

The departmental direction regarding khaki uniforms is consistent with uniform distinction given to senior non-commissioned officers, but that is not necessarily proof that Hadrian is a warrant officer. Furthermore, there has not been any canonical mention of warrant officer ranks (at least to my knowledge).--Fredmdbud 23:05, 19 December 2007 (CST)

In some cases, yes, the rank structure in BSG follows Naval rank structure, but ultimately is a mismash of ranks. There are no Colonels or Majors in the Navy. Commanders are occupying the position of Naval Captains, Colonels are Commnders, Majors seem to be Lt. Cmdrs, they have no correlation for their Captains. etc.

I just know that in my experience from working on the show, that everyone in a khaki uniform is a Warrant Officer. I mispoke when I referred to Warrant Officer as a branch of service, I was thinking of Marines vs. Colonial Fleet.--Zeppo 23:30, 19 December 2007 (CST)

She is first mentioned, albeit not by name, when Sharon Valerii notices that G-4 explosives are missing from a small arms locker and Chief Tyrol tells her that she must tell the Master-at-Arms (Water).

Hadrian leads the investigation of an accident on the hangar deck that results in the death of thirteen pilots and injures seven more, concluding that it was caused by material fatigue (Act of Contrition).

After a suicide attack by Aaron Doral, Commander Adama places her in command of investigating how it was possible for him to get past the security guards. She acts as the main prosecutor in an independent tribunal to attempt to locate Cylon saboteurs and collaborators aboard Galactica. However, her efforts turn into a witch hunt and, although Specialist Socinus is used as scapegoat, the tribunal is disbanded by Adama, after he himself is accused of facilitating the attack. Hadrian is confined to her quarters after losing a standoff with him (Litmus).

When a Cylon boarding party invades Galactica, Colonel Tigh mentions that Sergeant Hadrian is leading one of the squads of Marines defending the ship (Valley of Darkness).

Notes
* Hadrian was the name of a Roman Emperor who was characterized by his efforts to stabilize and strengthen the Roman frontier, building suitable defenses and abandoning provinces that were too costly to guard. Sergeant Hadrian plays a similar role: she tirelessly works to defend the Galactica against its enemies (although she focuses on internal enemies, whereas the emperor focused on external ones). In keeping with the show's basis in Greek mythology, Hadrian was a noted Hellenophile, and did much to enrich Greek culture in the Empire during his reign. While she is a Marine, it is possible that some rank insignia are used in both services.<br> Her full rank can be assumed to be staff sergeant which equates to petty officer, 1st class. Placing her one rank lower or higher would create a conflict with the established insignia of petty officer, 2nd class and chief petty officer respectively. * Sgt. Hadrian is incorrectly referred as a Marine in various online sources. In reality, as Master-at-Arms, she is a Warrant Officer in the Colonial Fleet.
* The rank of Sergeant for a Warrant Officer corresponds to other military structures, such as the Royal Air Force where Warrant Officers can hold the rank of Flight Sergeant.
* In the production of Battlestar Galactica, the differing uniforms are very specific, and everyone in khakis is designated as a Warrant Officer by production personnel (ie: wardrobe, props, assistant directors)
Sergeant Hadrian is the Master-at-Arms on Galactica, and one of its Warrant Officers. She is responsible for the internal security on the ship.

(See Wikipedia - Emperor Hadrian for more information.)
* In "Litmus", Hadrian wears rank insignia with one chevron on a green background that are normally used by Colonial Fleet non-commissioned officers. Moreover, Tyrol uses her rank in a tone that implies that he outranks her.
* Sgt.
* On the set of Battlestar Galactica, all departments (such as props, wardrobe, assistant directors) have designated the khaki uniforms as belonging to Warrant Officers, such as the one worn by Hadrian.

James "Jammer" Lyman is first seen as a deckhand under Chief Galen Tyrol on Galactica.

When President Roslin makes it public knowledge that Cylons are now capable of mimicking human form, paranoia spreads throughout the Colonial Fleet. Cally and Socinus argue with Lyman that everyone shouldn't become suspicious and stop trusting one another or the Cylons get what they want. Lyman tells his shipmates that the time for that kind of thinking is in the past and it's "every man for himself now" (Litmus).

When Cylon Centurions board Galactica (Valley of Darkness), Captain Lee Adama and a team of Marines find Lyman hiding unharmed in a small arms locker room filled with crewmen the Cylons killed.

Lyman also scoffs Tyrol's attempt at constructing the Blackbird, though he later reconsiders his decision and aids the deck crew and Tyrol in finishing the prototype, signing his nickname on the hull (Flight of the Phoenix).

As with most of the Fleet, Lyman settles on New Caprica. After the Cylons occupy the planet, Lyman becomes a member of the New Caprica Resistance. He appears to be very religious, and objects to hiding weapons in the temple. Lyman is picked up by the Cylon authorities and asked about the events of the temple by a copy of Number Five. He later joins the New Caprica Police (The Resistance).

Lyman survives the suicide bombing carried out by Tucker "Duck" Clellan at the NCP graduation ceremony and later participates in the rounding up of "insurgents" ordered by the Cylons. Like all NCP personnel, he wears a mask to conceal his identity, and not even Tyrol is aware of Lyman's new position. Jammer has a slight change of heart when the Cylons order the execution of 200 detainees, including Cally. At the execution site, just before the firing squad of Centurions appears, he cuts Cally's bonds and tells her to run (Precipice). The Centurions are then attacked by Tyrol and his fellow insurgents, who rescue the detainees (Exodus, Part I).

Jammer escapes Tyrol's squad and is seen again as New Caprica City is being evacuated during the Battle of New Caprica. Tom Zarek gives him a sidearm and tells him to guard Laura Roslin as she makes her way back to Colonial One. Lyman is on board the Presidential liner when it takes off to rendezvous with the Fleet (Exodus, Part II).

On the third night following the escape from New Caprica, Lyman is brought before the Circle, a tribunal secretly created by an executive order of President Tom Zarek. The Circle consists of six members who formerly served in the leadership of the New Caprica Resistance. The Circle convicts Lyman of crimes against humanity and treason and sentences him to death.

Lyman pleads for his life, imploring Chief Tyrol to have mercy on him because he saved Cally Tyrol's life. His pleas fall on deaf ears as he is directly responsible for the deaths of 23 people. Jammer is jettisoned from Galactica via one of the launch tubes and dies from vacuum exposure. Commander Lee Adama informs Admiral William Adama that Lyman is among the people who turn up missing, as Lyman failed to report for duty the following morning and could not be located on Galactica (Collaborators).

Notes
* Lyman is somewhat distinct amongst the deck crew of Galactica in that while many other deckhands wear orange jumpsuits, Lyman's jumpsuit is yellow. This is probably done to add to the realism of the Re-imagined Series, because real-world aircraft carrier deck crew personnel wear color-coded jumpsuits according to their assigned tasks.

* On real-world US Navy carriers, yellow-suited deck crewmen are charged with aircraft handling, catapult gear, and plane direction duties. The US Navy actually doesn't use an orange-suit designation, but the closest to that are red-suited personnel, who are charged with ordnance, crash and salvage duties.

* Lyman's yellow jumpsuit identifies him as a signaller, whereas the orange suited deckhands are mechanics. A signaller's duties are similar to those described above on US Naval carriers.
