'''Doctor Cottle''' is [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'s'' Chief Medical Officer ([[CMO]]). As the ship is operating with a minimal crew complement leading up to its [[Miniseries|expected decommissioning]], Cottle is the only real physician/surgeon aboard ''Galactica'' (perhaps in the entire [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]), supported by a handful of medics such as [[Layne Ishay]] and [[Howard Kim]]. There is a Dr. [[Stoffa]] in the fleet as a colleague of Cottle that he sometimes sends patients to, but if he is also a physician (possibly a psychiatrist) or a Clinical Psychologist is not made clear ([[Hero]]).

Cottle is somewhat eccentric -- a heavy smoker, despite knowing the risks, and one not overly impressed by positions of power. He is, above all things, a healer. To him, nothing else really matters, be it rank, riches, or species.

== Biography ==

Cottle is the third person in the Fleet to learn about President [[Laura Roslin]]'s fight with cancer ([[Act of Contrition]]), after [[Lee Adama]] ([[Bastille Day]]) and [[Billy Keikeya]] ([[Miniseries]]). He agrees to treat her condition, without revealing it to anyone else, and further agrees to support more unorthodox treatments such as [[chamalla]] extract (against his better judgment). Knowing the extent of her illness and Roslin's reluctance to undergo [[diloxin]] therapy, the doctor also recommends prayer.

Cottle takes a personal interest in [[Kara Thrace]]'s recovery from injuries suffered during a mission ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]). The doctor works with Lee Adama to get her out of sickbay ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]) without initial success.

Grumpy of attitude, yet always professional, Cottle instantly inspires trust, despite his attitude.

After the assassination attempt on [[William Adama]], ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]) Cottle is unavailable to stabilize the Commander as he is aboard another ship in the Fleet. Matters worsen after ''Galactica'''s jump to the [[Emergency Jump Coordinates|emergency coordinates]] separates Cottle and the battlestar. [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] orders Cottle's medics to stop Adama's internal bleeding ([[Scattered]]). However, while the medics stabilize the Commander's condition, they are unable to fully stop his bleeding. Cottle finally arrives and is able to operate on Commander Adama. After much risky work, the doctor saves Adama's life ([[Fragged]]).

Cottle speaks rather contemptuously of Colonel [[Saul Tigh]]'s authority. When Tigh asks of Adama's condition as Cottle begins surgery to save the Commander's life, he tells the XO, "How should I know? I'm not a psychic. Now get the hell out of here" ([[Fragged]]). Later, after Tigh orders an ill-advised attempt to restore supply runs to ''Galactica'' on the ''[[Gideon]]'', resulting in four civilian deaths, Cottle is anything but sympathetic when Tigh asks what happened: "What'd you expect, genius? You put a pilot in charge of crowd control" ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

At the request of President Roslin, despite her straight-to-the-point warning about its illegality and danger (Cottle: "You're a lousy salesman."), he assists Roslin in escaping ''Galactica'' by filing a request for a [[Raptor]] flight away from the battlestar, to care for patients on other ships. Roslin leaves ''Galactica'' on this "appropriated" Raptor with [[Lee Adama]] at the helm ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Major Cottle performs a series of medical scans on [[Gaius Baltar]]'s head at Baltar's request. Unknown to Cottle, Baltar is looking to see if there is a Cylon computer chip implanted into his brain. The scans show absolutely nothing unusual, and Cottle dismisses Baltar as a hypochondriac ("There's one on every bloody ship.") ([[Home, Part II]]).

Even Cottle's stony exterior gives way to the pain he sees on Laura Roslin's face when he gives her a new prognosis on her fight with cancer. Her cancer has spread aggressively, and the good doctor gives Roslin, on the outside, one month to live ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). His concern for Cylon [[Sharon Agathon|Sharon Valerii]] and her unborn [[Hera|hybrid child]] is remarkable, especially in the face of the rest of the crew's distrust and even hatred of her, hinting at his extremely strict sense of medical ethics. He describes her attempted rape by Lt. [[Thorne]] as "unforgivable," and voices his opposition to Baltar using Sharon's baby's blood as a cure for Roslin's cancer ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]], [[Epiphanies]]).

Cottle gains a reputation among the Fleet for performing abortions. When [[Rya Kibby]], a young [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Gemenon|Gemenese]] girl, wanted to end her pregnancy, she stows away to get aboard ''Galactica'' and see Cottle. Cottle explains the situation to Admiral Adama by acknowledging, "I get a note that a girl's on the way. She arrives. I do my work. And then she leaves. I don't ask a lot of questions." When Admiral Adama asks Kibby to return to her parents, Cottle suggests that the girl instead request political asylum aboard ''Galactica'', earning a stare from Adama ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

After the election of President [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] and the settlement of [[New Caprica]], Cottle, like most of ''Galactica'''s crew, retires from military duty. One year after the election he serves as a doctor on New Caprica in private practice ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

During the Cylon occupation of the planet, Cottle continues his work as a doctor and surgeon. He works as a neutral party in the Cylon-run state in [[New Caprica City]], treating human and Cylon alike. When a copy of [[Number Three]] questions why he does this he tells her he would do the same for anyone who came to him ([[Precipice]]).

*In the DVD commentary for "[[Act of Contrition]]", RDM states that actor Donnelly Rhodes was one of the three finalists up for the role of Col. [[Saul Tigh]], though in the end the part was given to one of the other finalists, [[Michael Hogan]].
*Doctor Cottle is named after Michael Rymer's childhood pediatrician, who Rymer tells was actually a very nice person, unlike his fictional counterpart.

* [[James Lyman]] is brought before [[The Circle]]. He is found guilty of treason, the punishment for which is death. Despite his pleas and an attempt to convince [[Galen Tyrol]] to spare him, for Lyman freed [[Cally Tyrol]] from the Cylon death squad ([[Precipice]]), The Circle carries out Lyman's punishment and ejects him from the ''Galactica'' by depressurizing the [[launch tubes|launch tube]] they lock him in.
* After Lyman's execution, Tyrol talks to his wife about how she escaped. While she claims to not have thought about the incident since, she tells him that she thinks one "[[New Caprica Police|of those goons]]" set her free.
* Laura Roslin on Colonial one talks with Tom Zarek and questions what he will do. Zarek plans to reconvene the Quorum of Twelve, put Roslin's name in for nomination to vice president and then step down returning the presidency to her. * Felix Gaeta enters the still damaged CIC to help with repairs to communication and Tigh sees him and vocally demands for him to leave since he was a collaborator. Helo annouces he's here on the Admiral's orders, but Tigh continues to protest loudly until Admiral Adama appears and takes him out of the room to talk to him about resting so he will be ready, something that Tigh thinks he doesn't need.
* The Circle reconvines and mentions they have a three day time limit to dole out justice and begins reviewing possible collaborators and voting on guilt or innocence of treason. Eventually they come to the file on Gaeta and four of the members voting for guilty and Anders refusing to vote on lack of actual hard evidence of him being guilty. Chief Tyrol refuses to vote if they do not have a sixth to even them out.
* In the mess hall Gaeta is treated as persona non grata and left to eat alone until Kara Thrace comes to sit at his table and begins to talk to him, kindly at first, before digging into him for not doing anything to help her or the insurgency. Gaeta counters by bringing up his status as the inside man, mentioning the dog dish being flipped over being his signal.
* Lee and Bill Adama are talking about the status and Lee brings up the fact that over the past few days 13 people have just disappeared after being confirmed as survivors of the Exodus.
* The Circle brings in Kara to be the replacement sixth vote of the jury and she looks at the file on Gaeta and after just seeing the list votes guilty leaving Chief Tyrol as the only hold out. Anders comes in and requests time to his wife. The scene then splits between the other members of the circle trying to convince Tyrol that Gaeta is guilty and Anders trying to explain that this isn't justice but Kara rebuffs him saying that she feels like she has to hurt someone for what happened to her and if he stays near her it will be him. The Chief eventually folds and votes guilty.
* Gaeta is captured and brought to a launch tube where he is informed of his conviction, told that this is an official trial under authority from the President of the Colonies, and that if he has anything to say to explain himself to say it now. He says he explained already and won't beg for his life. This seems to bring Kara to a point where she starts to abuse him telling him to beg while taunting him with the idea that he was an informer for the insurgency through the dog bowl signal. Something the Chief remembers and uses that fact to convince the other members of the Circle that Gaeta isn't guilty of treason and was the secret source in the Baltar Adminstration.
* Laura Roslin is re-inaugurated as the President of the Twelve Colonies, and issues a decree of amnesty against all alleged collaborators, after it is revealed that former President [[Tom Zarek]] authorized the trials and sentences conducted by the Circle in an attempt to protect Roslin from having to deal with public treason trials which could destroy the unity of the fleet through causing a witch hunt.
* Still outcast, Gaeta is reinstated in the Colonial Fleet. In the mess hall, Tyrol later dines with Gaeta after Roslin issues her decree. Both eat in silence as the other crew members are taken aback by the act.

* Gaius seems to be on Colonial One sitting in a chair in front of Tigh, Roslin, and Admeral Adama as they talk about how there was little he could do with the situation he had on New Caprica and that he is forgiven with Chip Six appearing and saying they are being to lenient with him and talking about his betrayal of the human race and Admiral Adama actually seems to hear her. Laura Roslin begins to tell Gaius how much she wants him in a provactive manner and he relizes its a dream and wakes up as she kisses him. Baltar finds himself naked on a red couch inside an unrecognizable room. When a [[Centurion]] guard appears at the doorway, Baltar realizes that he has nowhere to go and finds that he only has a robe to wear. It is revealed that he is onboard a Cylon Basestar, one of several others that are guarding a new [[Resurrection Ship]].

* A Number Three comes to visit Baltar and tells him that he has been out for 3 days and offers him a bottle of pills. She then explains that his presence on the basestar has caused a conflict between seven of the models. With three voting for him to be allowed to remain, while three vote for him to be removed. The only model that hasn't come to a consensus are the Sixes.

* A Six, heavily implied to be Caprica Six, comes to visit Baltar and explains how much she gave up for him while he tries to convice her that she is more then just a Cylon and that she loves him. That she needs him before she walks out noting that after she is gone that he needs her too, and that he should have started with that.

'''Launch keys''' are a critical component aboard [[Colonial]] ships. They are used, apparently, to start up a ship's powerplant and engines, similar to the way a car key does for the average automobile. Their removal from a ship will immobilize it.

In "[[Precipice]]," a briefing aboard ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' reveals that the grounded ships of the Fleet have had their launch keys removed. Keys are hard to duplicate, and the fleet ruled out making new keys as too difficult. One of the [[New Caprica Resistance|resistance]]'s goals is to recover them, which [[Sharon Agathon]] manages to do in "[[Exodus, Part I]]."

== Summary ==

===On Caprica===

*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]], the marines, and the [[resistance (movement)|resistance]] continue to take fire from Cylon centurions and artillery. They make their way up a hill, and hold their position.
*The Cylons hold fire, and Sharon remarks that the Cylons will attempt to capture them with non-lethal weapons, such as gas.
*Eighteen hours later, they emerge to find that the Cylons have disappeared. [[Cavil]] -- who suddenly appears behind them -- announces that the Cylons have left the Twelve Colonies and that humanity was spared.

===In the Fleet===

*[[Cally]] is cleared back to work by [[Cottle|Dr. Cottle]], despite having her jaw wired shut. [[Tyrol|Chief Tyrol]] visits her, apologizing for the attack. Cally forgives him, saying that she's always cared for him.

*[[Gaius Baltar|Dr. Baltar]] continues to gain in the polls. On ''[[Colonial One]]'', [[Tory_Foster|Tory]] mentions there's always a victory plan. [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] later calls a private meeting with Dr. Baltar, asking to deliver a joint statement of [[Wikipedia:Table (verb)|tabling]] the issue of colonization until after the election, which Baltar rejects.

*[[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], fearing that she has indeed lost the presidential race, confronts [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] on whether he was with Six on Caprica before the Cylon attack. Baltar avoids answering the question & states that he may have saved her life, but he will not save her political life.

*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] returns to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', with the resistance fighters, much to the delight of Admiral Adama. She mentions the fact that the Cylons have left Caprica, and a man appearing to be Brother Cavil confirms it. He also says he has a message, but is attacked by Chief Tyrol, who declares a "[[Code blue]]," claiming Cavil is a Cylon. Both Cavil and Caprica-Sharon are escorted to the brig under marine guard.

*The other Cavil (from last episode) is also taken to the brig, claiming he's not a Cylon, but changes his tune upon seeing his "brother", as he calls him. Caprica-Cavil then talks about the fact that the “war heroes” (Caprica Six & ''Galactica''-Sharon) have convinced their kind about how the attack of the colonies and the pursuit of the fleet were mistakes. Caprica-Cavil's mission was to relay the message that man and Cylon will go their separate ways. Both Roslin and Admiral Adama are less than trusting regarding the message.

*In the brig, Caprica-Sharon is completely disillusioned and nihilistic, declaring that since her child's death, nothing - not Adama's trust, not even Helo - matters to her. A frustrated Helo insists that he's not giving up on her, but she seems disinclined to listen.

*Starbuck and Anders are getting extremely drunk when Apollo comes in to welcome them back. Starbuck makes a snide remark about Apollo and Dualla and goes back to drunkenly making out with Anders. Apollo, clearly upset with Starbuck, leaves without saying much.

*Election Day has arrived and Baltar has an apparent five thousand-vote lead over Roslin with only a few ships left. On ''Colonial One'', Tory makes a call to ''Galactica'', putting a plan into action.

*Amazingly, Roslin initially appears to have retained the presidency. While most are celebrating, Lt. Gaeta makes a startling discovery regarding the votes, and informs the Admiral that Col. Tigh may be involved in a conspiracy to throw the election.

*Admiral Adama confronts Roslin regarding the conspiracy, saying that Tigh has confessed to rigging the vote. Roslin admits her involvement and Adama is disappointed.

*Baltar is informed of his election as President. Initially he vows to have a full investigation on the vote count, but after Adama suggests that Baltar take his victory and leave matters be, Baltar relents and informs Adama that he can be quite generous in victory. President-elect Baltar then orders a course for “New Caprica”.

*Baltar and Gina finally consummate their relationship after Gina informs Baltar that she would not be part of the colonization.

*[[Gaius Baltar]] is sworn in as the new President of the Twelve Colonies, and orders the immediate colonization of New Caprica.

*''[[Cloud 9]]'' is destroyed by a nuclear blast with Gina on board; in addition to the ''Cloud 9'', at least three other ships are destroyed in the blast. Admiral Adama reports to the president that this may be a Cylon attack, but Baltar ignores him and presses forward with colonization.

===One Year Later===

*[[Felix Gaeta|Mr. Gaeta]] is reporting to the President regarding a Union issue aboard Colonial One, now down on the planet. Baltar is upset, saying there have been no Cylon attacks but the people still complain. He has regressed, turning to alcohol, medication, and womanizing.

*Admiral Adama, now sporting a mustache, is walking around the near-empty Galactica, which is quickly falling into disarray. Over half of the crew have moved down onto the planet, and they are running on such a skeleton crew that they barely have enough pilots to fly training missions, much less a good CAP. Adama has a discussion with Tigh about going down to the planet, which Tigh reluctantly agrees to do.

*[[Samuel Anders|Anders]], now Kara’s husband, has pneumonia. Dr. Cottle is unable to treat Anders because there are no antibiotics available. He can only advise Kara to make sure Anders gets enough rest and with a little luck he "should" pull through.

*Kara runs into the Tighs as [[Tyrol]], now a union boss, is making a speech to begin a strike, with a very pregnant Cally by his side. Saul mentions that ''Pegasus'' keeps the backup medical supplies and that Apollo would spring some for Starbuck. Starbuck disagrees, which prompts Tigh to state that Apollo should be "over that by now".

*Roslin is doing what she does best, teaching the settlement's children, and manages to find enjoyment in her new position. [[Maya]] is with her, as is the now one year old [[Hera]], whom Maya has named "Isis".

*Kara calls Lee aboard ''Pegasus'', requesting the antibiotics. Dualla, now an officer and most likely Lee's XO, notices something on the [[DRADIS]].

*A fleet of [[Cylon]] [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]s arrives in orbit around New Caprica. The Adamas discuss what to do in response, with Lee initially advocating that the fleet jump away, and Admiral Adama initially resisting the suggestion. However, Lee apparently brings the Admiral around to his way of thinking (or Admiral Adama comes to the conclusion on his own) when [[Helo]] asks if alert fighters should be launched. Admiral Adama keeps the alert fighters in and jumps the fleet ships remaining in orbit around [[New Caprica]] to an unknown location, vowing that he will return.

*Mr. Gaeta informs the President of the Cylon approach. Later, before his assembled staff, copies of Numbers [[Number Five|5]], [[Number Eight|8]], and [[Number Six|6]] approach the President. The Cylons declare that as long as there’s no resistance, no harm will come. President Baltar, after learning that the Cylons discovered New Caprica because of the nuke explosion set off by Gina, declares surrender on behalf of the colonists. As Cylon armies occupy the planet, Kara vows to resist.

== Analysis ==
*According to Ron Moore's podcast, the events of "One Year Later" are real and was meant to solidify to the audience that the show is taking a path that can not be reversed. In order to make the colonization of New Caprica real, Moore felt that the show would need to jump ahead in a span of year to show that indeed Baltar has followed through with his political promise.

*The events of the Cylon invasion of New Caprica closely parallel the Nazi invasion of France, with the fleet's escape a parallel to the Allied evacuation of Dunkirk and Baltar's surrender a parallel to Petain's surrender. If the parallel continues, Baltar will establish a puppet regime under Cylon rule akin to Vichy France while Colonials still loyal to humanity will establish a resistance movement.

*Baltar's arrogance seems to have led to corrupt rule during his year on New Caprica—he replaces Roslin's modest desk with a larger, elaborate one, replaces the population count whiteboard with a portrait of himself, and keeps a harem aboard the landed Colonial One.

*After a whole year, everyone is still living in tents. There is a vital shortage of medicine, the military is of no use, and labor conditions are apparently intolerable. Baltar's administration is apparently as incompetent as Roslin feared.
**It is not clear whether these conditions are the result of admimistrative incompetence or the inherent difficulties of colonizing a marginally habitable planet.
***Of course, it was Baltar's idea to settle on a marginally habitable planet in the first place.

*It's ironic that the obligations of duty keep Lee Adama aboard Pegasus while everyone else goes planetside—he is a reserve officer, and promised to build his pilots a bar as soon as they found a habitable planet.
**Who says he didn't build a bar for them? However, despite building a bar, he would still command the Pegasus.

*Ron Moore has once again decided to play with viewer's expectations; in the podcast for "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" Moore commented on how everyone assumed that ''Pegasus'' would be destroyed by the end of the episode, and thus he thought it would be a good twist to keep ''Pegasus'' alive as another ship in the Fleet. Here, many viewers assumed that the nuke that Baltar gave to Gina in "[[Epiphanies]]" would be used to destroy ''Pegasus'' this time, but it wasn't.

*29 people died between this episode and the preceding one? One or two Raptors were lost, and some Marines died on Caprica, but that doesn't seem high enough.
**Is it possible they took out all of the people who left in the raptors because they were not apart of the fleet at the end of the previous episode?
***They didn't remove Starbuck from the count when she left for Caprica at the beginning of Season 2.
****She left at the end of season one, before they started the count. But, they did not add her to the count when she returned with Helo, because the count rose by one.
**Maybe more people died during the attack on Caprica than was shown.
***Yet another possibility is the inclusion of the Caprica survivors in the count to offset many of the losses that had incurred in the rescue mission.
***Although they didn't actually talk about the losses, there was a shot of a wounded person being taken away on a stretcher after the Raptors returned from the [[Caprica]] [[SAR]] mission.
***There may have been a series of election-related riots or murders.

*The year gap for the Cylons to find the fleet at first seems odd. However, it was stated in the previous episode that the interference from the gas cloud surrounding it would hide the planet fairly well. The Cylons were slightly over a light year away, according to the Number Five. Searching something as large as the gas cloud likely is for a planet or fleet is, given the sensor range limitations, quite impressive to accomplish in months, even with general directional information from a light-year out. In addition, the radiation from the nuclear explosion aboard the ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' would, of course, only be traveling at the speed of light. Even a less catastrophic attempt to communicate the Colonial's new location would be limited to the speed of light. Of course, once the location was pinpointed, an FTL jump by the Cylons to pounce would be instantaneous.
**Even though the Cylons were able to find New Caprica from the detected nuclear blast that occurred a year prior, the initial detection would have only pointed them in the right general direction. The planet would have moved from the location the inital blast occurred as it orbits around its sun. So the Cylons would only have been able to pinpoint the planet's last location a year prior. They could have used astronomical surveying to detect the planet or send their fleets to other positions using FTL ahead of the blast radiation to triangulate the nuclear blast. Then send recon elements to scout for the planet, which could have been the initial blips picked up by DRADIS by Lt. Dualla of recon Raiders. As soon as the planet was found the main Cylon Fleet would jump in from their staging areas.
***It is also clear that Gina truly did die in the nuclear explosion on Cloud 9 as she would have been able to inform the Cylons of the whereabouts of the Fleet. This indicates that no new Resurrection Ship has been constructed and that Gina's suicidal thoughts finally prevailed. This may explain why she was willing to consummate her relationship with Baltar as it would be the last time she could be with him.

*The population of New Caprica City is given as 39,192. There were just under 50,000 people in the Fleet before establishing the settlement, so that gives a figure of roughly 10,000 missing. It is uncertain how many were killed in the destruction of ''Cloud 9'' and surrounding Fleet ships but this loss along with any births and deaths that have taken place during the year since the election, leaves very few military personnel in the Orbital Defense. This almost certainly means that both ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' will be extremely short on crew, as many military personnel will have been left on the planet. There was clearly no time to retrieve even selected members of the crews before the Fleet jumped.
**The figure is not 10,000 missing — it is 10,000 not part of New Caprica City's population. The figure of 10,000 is spread amongst those remaining up in orbit with the fleet's remaining ships, out in independent, peripheral, or small settlements not part of New Caprica City proper, and casaulties.
**Watching the Fleet jump in slow-motion, you can count approximately 19 ships, which also gives a rough impression of the reduced size of the fleet. Other ships, including Colonial One and some Raptors, are landed on New Caprica and have presumably fallen into the hands of the Cylons.
**It is not explicitly said that all members of the New Caprica colony reside in New Caprica City. There may be outlying settlements, though none are named. One reason for this would simply be as a safeguard to keep a single nuclear strike from wiping out all of the fleet survivors.
***This would demonstrate Un-Baltar like prudence

**Any "industrial" vessels — such as the mining ships, tanker ships, repair ships, agro-world ship — would have landed on the planet and been debarked, dismantled, or converted to form the foundation for industrial / production efforts. Some of the vessels in the fleet that left Ragnar Anchorage weren't designed for prolonged interstellar journeys, and were basically running "on a hope and a prayer", and would have been rendered promptly upon finding a more permanent home. The nineteen-or-so ships seen are, more than likely, the last spaceworthy vessels in the fleet that are not needed planetside.
***After a year, people are still living in tents and using landed ships as buildings, so it doesn't look like much has been dismantled or converted into raw production. Other than the Tyrols miners, who are apparently extremely unhappy at how things have been run, we see little evidence of industry or production over the year.

*Apparently, Kara's comments about Lee and Dualla have taken their toll of their relationship with each other. Whether the comments escalulated is to be determined, but from Dualla's expression of annoyance when she hands the receiver to Lee when Kara calls, it is clear that the three never reconciled with each other.

*The Six and Eight that are part of the Cylon delegation that greets Baltar's cabinet are probably the Caprica-Six and [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|''Galactica''-Sharon]] respectively. This is implied from Six's reaction upon seeing Baltar and her implied message of knowing who Gaius was. The two are also wearing the exact same clothes of the two Cylon war heros from the episode [[Downloaded]].

*In the Season 3 trailer that followed the end of the episode, Six is narrating, and states that humanity has finally surrendered and the war is over. According to Six, the Cylons can finally fulfill their "''true destiny''" and take care of humanity. They desire to show humanity the "''glory of peace''", mercy, and like God, their mercy can only be matched by their power and complete control. So apparently, the war heros have indeed changed the Cylons' perjudices towards humanity, but unfortunately this also means that the Cylons believe that the only way to care for humanity is to control it.

== Saul and Bill vs. The ''Evil'' Cylons ==

So wait... The Cylong War started when William Adama was, roughly, ten and Saul Tigh was being born? It then went on for about 10 years, thus ending shortly after Adama would have been able to be in the military (assuming both that he wouldn't lie about his age to get in and that the Colonial Fleet has similar age-restrictions to the US Army--both pure speculation) and when Tigh was 10ish. This is my understanding from reading the time-line. I've frankly not paid much attention to when they mention these things on-screen. However, if this is true, then how did the ten-year-old Tigh learn about Cylon boarding party tactics after the Armistice? I have the (perhaps mistaken) impression that both Tigh and Adama are veterans of the Cylon War, but this timeline doesn't seem to allow for that. What's going on here? Am I daft? After their meticulous efforts at keeping track of the timeline during the first season, [[TPTB]] have apparently started slacking off this season. A clear timeline is an important resource, however, so let's start untangling things.

*'''Scattered''', '''Valley of Darkness''' and '''Fragged''' all clearly take place within the same 24-36 hours, on Day 51.

*'''Resistance''' takes place over two days, and begins on day 53 ''at the earliest''. Apollo asks Dualla how his father is doing "today", implying that it is at least the second time he has done so. His first chance would have been the morning of Day 52, putting the earliest possible date of this episode at Day 53.

:*Ends: Day 54 (earliest possible)

:At the end of the episode, Roslin escapes and Bill Adama wakes up. In "The Farm", Gaeta states that Roslin's escape took place "last week". This is very vague, and means only that "The Farm" begins more than one day after "Resistance", or else Gaeta would have said "yesterday". In a [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/episodes/season02/205/deleted2.html scene] cut from beginning of The Farm (during Roslin's arrival on ''[[Kimba Huta]]''), Roslin makes a stronger statement - that it's been an "entire week" since her escape from ''Galactica''. This allows us to constrain the date of this episode fairly well, by substracting a seven day period from the well established possible date range for The Farm:

Speaking from experience, I have known two people (one relative, one relative of a close friend) with cancer who have been given the "surprised if you see out the month" speech from doctors only to survive 3 months and 18 months respectively. My point is that even the most experienced of doctors often have to make educated guesses and sometimes they don't get the figures quite right. Sometimes the cancer doesn't behave as expected or the progression through the body slows. Speaking from experience, I have known two people (one relative, one relative of a close friend) with cancer who have been given the "surprised if you see out the month" speech from doctors only to survive 3 months and 18 months respectively. My point is that even the most experienced of doctors often have to make educated guesses and sometimes they don't get the figures quite right. Sometimes the cancer doesn't behave as expected or the progression through the body slows. The "matter of weeks" timing of Black Market after Epiphanies is thorny in terms of trying to figure out when it happens. I'm estimating 3 weeks, hence 21 days. If it was much longer, they could have said "a month" or "almost a month" or "more than a month", if it was shorter, it could be "just a week" or the like. It could be a little more either way, but I put dates in estimating that much time (and noted as approximate).

Colonial military staff who are flight-qualified as a pilot wear a '''flight suit'''.

A flight suit is a basic [[Wikipedia:Pressure suit|pressure suit]]. It's a versatile outfit that has been designed to be as comfortable as it is useful. Flight suits are worn by both [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] and [[Raptor]] crews during missions.

The flight suit is a one-piece jumpsuit with a single zipper from neck to waist in the front. Pressure gloves, which allow for great dexterity for pilot's as they use ship controls, are attached by a soft pressure seal apparently incorporated in the sleeves. The pilot's helmet is connected to the suit by a hard seal collar. This seal also provides pressure to the suit as a whole when connected. The collar receives air from a life support unit attached to the pilot's ejection seat (in the case of Vipers), or attached to a hose.

It also appears that the flight suit can be worn with helmet but left vented to the outside air by leaving the front helmet's visor partially open, to allow quick connection to life support but allowing crews in larger craft, such as Raptors, to move about the cabin without hoses.

When pilots are not in flight, the suit is unzipped for comfort. Pilots often roll down the top half of the suit when off-duty or while they are performing hard work. Basic crew fatigues are worn underneath a suit, without the formal officer tunic. Pilots wear standard undershirts under a flight suit.

Flight suits appear suitable as all-weather gear when in rainy or cool conditions, but they provide no significant protection in combat as they are not armored. Flight suits can include a utility belt for various gear, including a sidearm.

In the episodes "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]" and "[[Act of Contrition]]", we see Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]] using her flight suit to its fullest, from her ejection from her wayward Viper to her parachute landing, and monitoring of life support mechanisms using gauges built into the suit.

The suits are obviously designed to keep a pilot who has ejected from his Viper alive in a vacuum for a limited amount of time, such as when Lee Adama had to eject from the [[Blackbird]] in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]", it appears that ''Galactica'' rarely has opportunity for [[SAR]] operations to retrieve pilots after combat with Cylon forces in the [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|re-imagined series]], as they must frequently retreat with the [[Fleet]], leaving any surviving Viper pilots to die once their oxygen runs out, or worse, left to the mercy of the Cylons.

He apparently survived the [[Cylon attack]] on the [[Twelve Colonies]], escaping aboard the liner ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'', itself destroyed on the order of [[Roslin, Laura|President Roslin]] when the ship appeared to have fallen into Cylon hands ("[[33]]").

Amorak was alleged to possess information pertaining to the betrayal of humanity. He sent a request to ''[[Colonial One]]'' to meet with Roslin to convey this information; however, before the meeting could take place, the ''Olympic Carrier'' failed to execute an [[FTL]] jump with the rest of the fleet. When the liner did eventually make the jump and return to the fleet, some three hours later, it had been infiltrated by the Cylons, who placed a nuclear weapon aboard the [[Intersun]] starliner. It attempted to run an interdiction quarantine being held by ''Galatica's'' [[CAP]], pressumably to try and destroy ''Galactica'' and her Fleet, prompting her destruction and pressumably killing Dr. Amorak. ("33").

Later, a corporeal version of [[Number Six]] calling itself "[[Shelly Godfrey]]" arrived aboard the ''[[Galactica]]'', claiming to be an assistant of the late Dr. Amorak. She presented evidence of Baltar's complicity in the Cylon attack, but the evidence turned out to be fabricated ("[[Six Degrees of Separation]]").

At no time is it clear whether or not Amorak was aboard the ''Olympic Carrier'', or whether the use of his name in these events was merely a Cylon ploy to further manipulate Baltar, drawing him further into their influence.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as a substitute for the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President [[Laura Roslin]]'s continued use of the term ''President of the [[Twelve Colonies]].'' This may be interpreted as either an expression of hope that eventually the people on board the ships of the Fleet will reestablish themselves on a new colony permanently, or a psychological inability to confront that the Fleet may be the only home that humanity knows for a very long time.

In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] left the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 were Gemenons and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the fleet was 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica had more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron had in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.

*The 23 ships that left with the [[Laura Roslin faction]], apart from the ''Astral Queen'', would have an average population of about 720 persons per ship.

In the [[Mini-Series]], astute viewers may recognize three spacecraft with notable resemblances of ships from other SF universes. DRADIS (Direction, RAnge, and DIStance) is a detection, identification and tracking system, somewhat similar to [[Wikipedia:Radar|radar]], used aboard [[Colonial Fleet]] spacecraft. DRADIS is occasionally refered to as "Radar", possibly as a slang or archaic term (or as a continuity error) ([[The Hand of God]]){{ref|1}}

DRADIS can be used in stationary configurations as well on ships. A group of [[Centurion]]s are able to jury-rig a DRADIS assembly from their [[Heavy Raider]] into a stationary DRADIS tracking array in an attempt to shoot down a [[SAR]] mission from ''[[Galactica]]'' ([[Fragged]]).

Carbon composites are largely invisible to DRADIS scans ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

A ''DRADIS contact'' is an object or objects detected by the DRADIS sensor system. Contacts are typically identified by cross-referencing with an [[IFF]] system (in the case of ships) or an astronomical database (in the instance of planets or other celestial bodies).

DRADIS is likely a central component of the [[Computers|Navigation computer]] on ''Galactica''.

"DRADIS" is an unfortunate acronym, since "range" and "distance" are redundant with each other.

The "Direction, RAnge, and DIStance" breakdown of the acronym "DRADIS" was listed in an [http://www.twiztv.com/scripts/battlestar/season1/galactica-ms1.pdf early manuscript] (PDF) of the first half of the [[Mini-Series]]. Since some major elements of this script were changed (such as Kobol being the sole home of the Colonies, and not separate worlds) in comparison to the completed teleplay, canonical use of this breakdown should be taken with some skepticism.

However, there still is some evidence to suggest that the original breakdown is the canon version. In "Kobol's Last Gleaming Pt. 1" Crashdown performs a DRADIS sweep of Kobol. That aerial survey is then presented to the President. For a brief moment as she is just taking the survey image out of Billy's hand you can see the DRADIS information printed on the image. The letters on the image are clear and are as follows:

The numbers may not be accurate or complete as we cannot see much further to the right of the image. However, given that the letters do represent numerical values, most fan-suggested alternatives for the breakdown of DRADIS would seem to be unlikely. The [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] counterpart to DRADIS was simply refered to as the [[Scanner]].

: I verified it, I citied it before by putting in the article (which is enough for almost everything else on this Wiki, but if you really want a footnote there it could be done). It's in The Hand Of God, at the scene where Starbuck is giving her plan. It's at 11:53 into the episode, in DVD chapter 2, the line is "the decoy ships will jump into the enemy star system at extreme radar range" which is also what the Closed Captioning says, and the transcripts of the episode. I went back and watched the scene 10 times, it's "radar range". Likely a goof, but one that could be interpreted that "radar" is slang or a little-used term for the more technically accurate Dradis. "Raider range" doesn't really make sense, since in the miniseries it was made clear that ships can fly for hours from one end of a star system to another at sublight regularly (also backed up in "You Can't Go Home Again", where vipers spend many hours in the air before running low on fuel), and they know that the maximum range of a raider is at least Caprica. A ''DRADIS contact'' is an object or objects detected by the DRADIS sensor system. Contacts are typically identified by cross-referencing with an [[IFF]] system (in the case of ships) or an astronomical database (in the instance of planets or other celestial bodies).

DRADIS is likely a central component of the [[Computers|Navigation computer]] on ''Galactica''.

"DRADIS" is an unfortunate acronym, since "range" and "distance" are redundant with each other.

The "Direction, RAnge, and DIStance" breakdown of the acronym "DRADIS" was listed in an [http://www.twiztv.com/scripts/battlestar/season1/galactica-ms1.pdf early manuscript] (PDF) of the first half of the [[Mini-Series]]. Since some major elements of this script were changed (such as Kobol being the sole home of the Colonies, and not separate worlds) in comparison to the completed teleplay, canonical use of this breakdown should be taken with some skepticism.

However, there still is some evidence to suggest that the original breakdown is the canon version. In "Kobol's Last Gleaming Pt. 1" Crashdown performs a DRADIS sweep of Kobol. That aerial survey is then presented to the President. For a brief moment as she is just taking the survey image out of Billy's hand you can see the DRADIS information printed on the image. The letters on the image are clear and are as follows:

The numbers may not be accurate or complete as we cannot see much further to the right of the image. However, given that the letters do represent numerical values, most fan-suggested alternatives for the breakdown of DRADIS would seem to be unlikely. While this is not conclusive evidence, it is consistent with the orignal manuscript definition.

The [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] counterpart to DRADIS was simply refered to as the [[Scanner]].

Also, Cain is not clinically insane. It's not just "insane" humans who do evil things in wartime. Cain does bad things, and she doesn't have the excuse of not being in command of her mental faculties.
* Has Roslin's illness has brought her to terminally important attitudes on life and death? Unlike the option to kill the prisoners on the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' ([[Miniseries]]), Roslin does not hesitate to suggest to Adama to kill Cain.
**These two issues are not morally equivalent. The prisoners on ''Astral Queen'' were not posing an immediate threat to the safety of the Fleet, as Cain and ''Pegasus'' were.

**On the other hand, this is consistent with Admiral Cain's behavior so far: while ''Galactica's'' crew realizes they had no hope of taking back the Colonies and left to try to find Earth, ''Pegasus'' has actually been engaging Cylon forces on the outskirts of the occupied Twelve Colonies for months. Cain does truly seem to want to "take the fight to the Cylons", as it were, and fight to reclaim the Twelve Colonies.
***Even if she is being honest about that, her comment to Starbuck that Anders' resistance "deserves to be saved" seems almost definitely just to be Cain manipulating Starbuck: As evidenced by Cain's treatment of her own [[Scylla|small civilian fleet]], she has completely prioritized the military assets of ''Pegasus'' over the well-being of any other small group of people.
***Even if Admiral Cain were able to lead the Fleet in successfully forcing the Cylons out of the Twelve Colonies, doesn't she realize that they've ''already'' been nuked and are currently inhospitably irradiated? The few people left on the Colonies need anti-radiation medication to survive there, there's only a finite supply of these and it's doubtful that they have any production facilities they could use.

== Analysis ==
This episode fails to skip a beat from the mid-season closer. With ''Galactica's'' and ''Pegasus''' Vipers in a scary game of chicken, the level of tension borders on the "fish in a blender" scenario.

Admiral Cain is clearly showing signs of stress indicative of some kind of sociopathic disorder; her orders and desire to follow the military way overshadow any compassion or understanding of the reality of her situation. She fails to understand that killing Helo and Tyrol worsens the Fleet, as she cannot simply find a suitable replacement.

The star of this show, albeit briefly appearing, is Mary McDonnell's Roslin. Like her namesake Blackbird itself, Roslin shows her toughness in staring down Cain ''and'' Adama, who actually looks ''ashamed'' in his actions while Roslin reads both "the riot act." Were not for the situation, Roslin's second talk with Adama, maybe the first time that Roslin does not appear with Adama in regular clothing, very casual, and obviously ill, seemed more like two old friends. Adama does something viewers have rarely seen with Roslin--his face relaxes and shows humor, sympathy, perhaps even sadness at Roslin's illness and her strength in looking her illness in the face and denying it anyway. He offers his hand and she accepts with a squeeze before she leaves. It seems in this moment that Roslin and Adama exchanged more romantic chemistry than the writer's attempts to do the same with Adama's son and Kara Thrace.

Baltar was generally neutral in this episode, playing both sides, Adama and Cain, Colonial and Cylon, to the advantage of all. His motives in saving Gina are still in doubt, and viewers are likely to see more development here.

Viewers are likely more interested not in the upcoming battle, now a more evenly matched fight between Colonial and Cylon (all things considered--[[basestar]]s generate Raiders like rabbits generate offspring), but in the battle for control of the Fleet, with both Adama and Cain performing similar strategies to kill the other.

*Cain wonders if debating morality is what Roslin and Adama have been doing "for the past six months"; however, as explained in the article [[Timeline (RDM)]], this episode only takes place a little over ''three'' months after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. Specifically, the beginning of "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]" took place 30 days after "[[Resistance]]", when the crashed Raptor team returned from Kobol, which took place less than a week after "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]", which explicitly stated to take place 51 days after [[Helo]] was stranded on Caprica in the [[Miniseries]]. In "Flight of the Phoenix", Roslin was told that her cancer had advanced aggressively, and she had a month to live "at the outside". The idea that the episode "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]" (which took place immediatly before this one) took place ''three months'' after "Flight of the Phoenix" thus seems entirely impossible. This line should probably be regarded as exaggeration, or just a goof.

*Pilot [[Louanne Katraine]] has apparently got her groove back from "[[Final Cut]]", and has become the lead pilot on ''Galactica'' following the transfer of Lee Adama and Kara Thrace to ''Pegasus''. Given that the ungifted [[George Birch]] was apparently the best to be found within ''Galactica's'' regular chain of command ([[Home, Part I]]), it's unsurprising that a talented nugget has risen to the top.
**In hindsight, her abuse of stims is actually in line with the single-minded zeal she approaches her job with. She has apparently learned to channel her perfectionism into a more constructive outlet.

*Both Adama and Cain's assassination plans (taking advantage of a victory celebration in CIC) are exactly the same as the one used by Galactica-Boomer in Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II.

Battle in which [[Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' turned the Cylon's own [[logic bomb]] computer [[virus]] against them to completely power down a massive fleet of hundreds of [[Raider]]s and [[Heavy Raider]]s in a reverse of the Cylon's use of it in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]].

''Galactica'' began to suffer system failures and malfunctions throughout the ship. Watch Officer Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] and Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] determined that the Cylon virus which infected the ship shortly after the fleet reunited ([[Scattered]]) and downed several ship functions for a time ([[Valley of Darkness]]) had returned. Apparently the virus had a latent element that hid itself, slowly emerging throughout ship computers, testing and probing for weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

Gaeta and Baltar determined that this logic bomb may be a prelude to a Cylon attack. They determined a way to remove the bomb by erasing all ship computer hard drives, then reloading the computers from backups made before the war. The complication was this would leave the ship completely vulnerable for several minutes. If the logic bomb was "detonated", the virus would turn ''Galactica'' against itself and her fleet.

Commander Adama elected to use the incarcerated Caprica copy of [[Sharon Valerii]] to aid them. She interfaced her body to the ship's mainframe and communication systems via a fiber-optic link placed inside her left forearm. A massive Cylon force arrived to attack, and all Vipers were scrambled. As ''Galactica'' erased her hard drives, Valerii apparently copied the logic bomb code into herself and began manupulating it. She released the altered code through the comm channels, transmitting it to the Cylon force. In an amazing turn of historic events, the entire Cylon fleet lost all power as Valerii's version of the virus shut them down in the same way that Colonial ships were shut down during the Fall of the Colonies.

Many out-of-control Cylon ships were destroyed as they crashed into each other.

Commander Adama and [[Colonel Saul Tigh]] then ordered ''Galactica's'' Vipers to kill each of the Cylon fighters. ''Galactica's'' Vipers proceeded to tear through the jumbled Cylon formations, destroying the entire disproporationately larger Cylon force while not losing a single Colonial ship in the process ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

*According to Ron D. Moore's [[podcast]] for "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]", this battle was specifically inspired by the "[[Wikipedia:Great Marianas Turkey Shoot|Great Marianas Turkey Shoot]]" of World War II. This page is named in light of that reference.

*Visually, there are at least 42 Vipers on screen, but there is a strong possibility that this is a visual effects mistake: Apollo said in "[[Act of Contrition]]" that there were only 40 Vipers left. I hate the spoiler policy. I don't want to be spoiled. I won't be using or contributing to the site significantly until after the end of the season and before you start spoiling season 3.

Character summaries in particular should be free of spoilers like "died in tbe episode Scattered," (before it aired), especially when the character doesn't die in Scattered after all when it finally airs.

If the consensus is that spoiler information is used, then that's the consensus; if it is vice-versa, then spoiler information isn't used (or packaged so as not to spoil the casual reader). As we're an '''information resource and episode guide''', spoilers are a necessary evil. Some of the spoiler information changes from script to shooting, hence the inaccurate statement of Socinus' death in "Scattered"; it doesn't preclude him dying later on due to his injuries, so he may still die this season.

Actually, I think that there is no way of making a spoiler-free version for everybody and making it work, too - because some country will always be the last to air the show, and by then, parts of the rest of the world will have forgotten about it already.

There is however one exception: There should really be no spoilers for shows that have not even aired, or at least not anywhere but that episode's summary. Otherwise, there is really no way one can enjoy this wiki ''and'' the show. (Happened for me with Home II.) I would even go as far as extending the no-spoilers for not-yet-aired shows for 24 hrs after the show, again, with the exception of the episodes's page. Because, let's fact it, lots of people will use P2P to see the show, because otherwise it would be years until they get to see it. (And if they are unlucky, they would have to see a synchronised version, too.) So the latter suggestion would enable them to look up things here while not having to wait for the show to arrive.

And one final thing: Spoiling from the scripts does not even make much sense - as the first poster on this page points out; and the audio comments imply the same. So my guess would be that spoiling not-yet aired shows will put off users from using this site, which is hardly a good thing, and it doesn't make much sense in the first place to do so, because the scripts will not air the way they were written, anyway. There's no reason not to be patient with these things. If we want to stay spoiler free on the west coast, we can always just not log on during the three hour window. I found this problem with the Pegasus ep and related data. I wanted to keep the Fall of the Twelve Colonies page accurate with what we knew about surviving Battlestars, but this is still a spoiler, so the data there is left a bit vague unless someone digs for it. Still, a spoiler is a spoiler. The talk page would satisfy both spoiler-hunter and seeker on an episode article. We'd just need to add a "Spoiler" topic there, and note to people that if you are going to see an episode page for a show that hasn't aired, you are asking for it, literally. At least the talk page has an extra layer for avoiders to have, but because of the nature of this wiki, eliminating spoilers takes away a lot of the research fun. My main concern is someone clicking through and wondering, "Who the ''heck'' is Gina?", thinking it's some pilot who's name they missed or some small character. Then they read about an episode they didn't want to. Or, in another case, someone reading all about Lee and the information going on, at the end, past the most recent episode.
