Am I the only one who thinks cottle is a cylon?--Glaucon

:I've thought so for a long time, for one big reason: I think it is just preposterous and unbelievable that a Cylon could be medically indistinguishable from a human. They've got light-up spines, and they can transmit/receive data by sticking a cable into their hands! I cannot accept that it would be so difficult to isolate some medical differences, based on that. Cottle has medical technology that's roughly the same as our present-day technology, such as MRIs. He has had access to plenty of Cylon patients, plus Hera. He has had over a year of opportunity to study Athena (if he asked for her consent). If Cottle weren't a Cylon himself, he'd have developed a Cylon-screening test in the first few weeks of this series. There's also the fact that Cottle was conveniently absent when Boomer shot Adama. He's a Cylon, count on it! --[[User:Smw|Smw]] 13:09, 1 February 2007 (CST)
::Welcome to the wiki, Smw. (You're replying to an older conversation, but I'll jump in.) Cottle is unlikely to be a Cylon, if Three's revelation in her vision of the [[final five]] is to be believed. She spoke with the man after he treats injuries of a [[Number Five]] in "[[Exodus, Part I]]." Her comment when she sees what she believes is another Cylon in her vision doesn't fit; Three apologizes to the image, but she's never personally harmed Cottle, where the dialog suggests that a personal threat was exchanged by the Three to the unknown Cylon. And, most importantly, not even [[Cavil]] is as ornery as Cottle is. :) --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 13:20, 1 February 2007 (CST)
::A few points... Cylons are virtually indistinguishable to humans, even on a cellular level. Baltar even proved this. The only difference is how they react to certain classes of radiation–which is why Baltar needed the nuclear warhead. Therefore, Cottle would not have developed a Cylon-screening test a few weeks, or even a few months, into the first exodus. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 16:48, 1 February 2007 (CST)
::Joe, then how do ''you'' explain the light-up spines, and how do ''you'' explain Sharon cutting open her hand, sticking a cable in, and transmitting data through it? These things aren't anatomically possible for a human. And that ought to be as obvious to the characters as it is to the viewers. It's a glaring inconsistency that needs to be explained onscreen, someday. The simplest explanation is this: any physician with an MRI could examine a Cylon's spine and find the lightbulbs (or whatever), but Cottle never looked, because he was intentionally perpetuating the ''myth'' that Cylons are medically indistinguishable from humans. --[[User:Smw|Smw]] 23:54, 1 February 2007 (CST)
:::Light bulbs? Not really. Bioluminescence. Also, the spine thing is a [[w:flashing arrow|flashing arrow]] of sorts, letting us know that something is simply abnormal with Baltar's [[Caprica-Six|mystery woman]]. It wouldn't surprise me if the cellular structure of Cylons is photo-sensitive either. Also, while I'm not a scientist by any means, what I do know is that cellular testing is very time-intensive and requires sensitive, complex scientific equipment that ''Galactica'' likely doesn't carry. Also, Doc Cottle isn't a biologist by any means, but more of a general medical practitioner. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 00:50, 2 February 2007 (CST)
:No, he's apparently well known, has been there for years, and seems to (at least) have been old enough to have been in the Cylon War. --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 03:25, 26 February 2006 (EST)

:I appreciate your response. Particularly since, having glanced at several of the other discussions, you apparently know the subjects far better than I and appear to be somewhat of a scholar. Nevertheless, having now glanced at the page about such speculation, I believe some of the assumptions to be unwarrented or at least weakly supported. The most obvious being apparent age. ( forgive me if I don't give citations, but I am remembering rather than running them down and I believe your familiarity will make it unncessary.) I saw it mentioed at one point that the cyrlon models represent archtypes, a father/wiseman/partiarch (perhaps even shaman/doctor) arhetype would possibly be created old as would a martriarch/etc.etc. ( I am unaware if there is any evidence one way or another that they physically age with time, but supposing arguendo that they do, this maight account for the seeming greater ages of earlier numbered models than that of newer models - though it would also imply that those downloaded at death actually enter "unused" rather than new bodies, six revives in a body just like her's not a younger version of it.) I also don't find the number or years agrument to be compelling as far as I recall the only statement on how the cylons have been around is in given by Six to Balter and implied by Sharon. Six is clearly an unrealiable narrator, both through manipulation and perhaps through knowledge. All we know for sure that she can speak on is her own time since insertion and we cant necessarily trust that she is honest about that. --[[User:Glaucon|Glaucon]] 13:29, 2 March 2006 (CST) Gluacon

A) Number Six was being honest to other Cylons in "Downloaded", B) While Doctor Cottle's PHYSICAL age doesn't really matter--yes, as seen in the upcoming Cavil-model, they can be old--what I mean is that Doctor Cottle has apparently been serving for many years aboard Galactica and other ships and is ''well-known''. Cylons would tend to be people whose past cannot be confirmed. --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 13:47, 2 March 2006 (CST)

: Thank you again for your response. In Re A: was she speaking of her own tenure on caprica and if so why would that have any implications for the existence of other models and their time lines? Do we assume she is privy to all the informaiton of the cylons ( clearly dangerouse in an infiltrator who is subject to torture.) In re B: clearly my objections to this are bound up in the answer to A.--Glaucon

We don't, but BattlestarWIki has pieced it together that A) Caprica-Six was on Caprica for 2 years, and Galactica-Boomer was on Galactica for 2 years (stated by Adama in [[The Farm]])). We actually think infiltration could have started before then, but "wide-scale" infiltration only started 2 years ago. Regardless, there is very little information that would support Cottle as a Cylon, other than just random accusations. --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 14:37, 2 March 2006 (CST)

: I agree that there is nothing overt wich is why I ask about disqualifiers. Many of the things I am considering are extrinsic to him, the fact that we "know" there are a number of other cylons in the fleet, that it is likely there is at least one with a high enough level of access to leave notes in adama's quarteres about the number of cylon models, that other than into the command structure itself, the doctors position would be an ideal place for an agent. Brain chip- Batlar is just nuts, has an undetectable chip in his head, or the doctor did not tell him of the positive result. In Flesh and Blood, Conoy displys a great deal of knowledge of Kara's mental state and personal psychology, while this could have been gathered other ways, her medical records and the observation the doctor was able to make of her in the wake of her injury seem more likely candidate that the information even of others like sharon as Kara doesn't seem to really be the "shareing" type. Cottle seems protective of sharon and her child and his reaction to the attempted rape implies that he sees them as more than machines ( this creates an interesting, though by no means fatal, dichotomy between his advocacy of human abortion, I'm pro-choice myself, but one of those Gemonons could argue that he values cylon life over human life). He seems to encourage dissention on issues that, while they may not endanger the fleeet directly, due keep things tense and act as wedges betweeen the government and the people as well as between adama and the president -helping Roslin escape captivity, performing abortions of unclear legality and in such a way as to be caught at it, then pushing asylum when adama tries to sweep it under the rug - in each case aiding or stimulating the conflict and then letting others due the fighting and reap the animosity. He is ideally situated to gather information and to be a low-level provacatur. Wrong, perhaps, but certaily not a random accusation. --[[User:Glaucon|Glaucon]] 20:32, 2 March 2006 (CST)

::Regarding the note... it always seemed to me that we were meant to believe that Baltar left the note in Adama's quarters, given that he was the only one told (on screen anyway) that there were twelve models. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 20:41, 2 March 2006 (CST)

: Good point, thank you. I didn't think that simply becuase he does not seem inclined to be helpful and I think he would be terrified of being caught leaving it and questioned as to the origin of his knowledge, but it is certainly a possibility. --[[User:Glaucon|Glaucon]] 20:49, 2 March 2006 (CST)
Question: Can anyone get screencaps of Dr. Cottle in a Major's Uniform from Downloaded? I don't think Apollo's quick promotion made him change his uniform in Captain's Hand, so I think that here is the first time we see what a Major's uniform actually looks like: But my problem is that it is dark: does the Major's uniform have a white line, or a gold line? I cannot tell. --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 03:25, 26 February 2006 (EST)
== Cottle a Cylon: Revisited, Post-"Final Four" Reveal ==

We have one Cylon left to meet: one of the "Final Five."

The first type are the numbered, revealed "skinjob" models who've already appeared in the series: Nos. [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Number_One 1] (Cavil), [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Leoben_Conoy 2] (Leoben), [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Number_Three 3] (D'Anna), [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Simon 4] (Simon), [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Number_Five 5] (Doral), [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Number_Six 6] (Number Six), and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Number_Eight 8] (Athena/Boomer). The second type are what I'll call [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Final_Five TAFT-style Cylons]1, a kind of Cylon which doesn't have to match the [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Humanoid_Cylon_speculation&amp;oldid=113039 "can't be a Cylon" guidelines] that had existed in the prior three seasons: Cylon possibilities couldn't exist prior to the Cylon War, couldn't have adult children or a verifiable family history. (For example, Col. Tigh has a long, established history amongst humans (<i>i.e.</i>, not a fake implanted history) -- we saw flashbacks with a young Tigh interacting with a young Adama long before humanoid Cylons were revealed in the Reimagined BSG Universe ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Scattered Scattered]).) Since this has proven no longer true, you really can't use logic puzzles to narrow down the candidates any longer -- and so you have to instead think about what makes the most in a "meta" sense -- what serves storytelling purposes for the writers?

<small>1To me, "final four" and "final five" get a little awkward, and, besides, I wanted to coin a phrase to describe the specialized <i>type</i> of humanoid Cylon these last four are -- a model that breaks all previously existing understanding as to what limitations defined Cylon versus human. (TAFT is just [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Saul_Tigh Saul <b><u>T</u></b>igh], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Samuel_Anders Samuel <b><u>A</u></b>nders], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Tory_Foster Tory <b><u>F</u></b>oster], and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Galen_Tyrol Galen <b><u>T</u></b>yrol].)</small>

Based on [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Humanoid_Cylon_speculation others' nerdity] (and I don't use that as a derogatory term -- geek pride!), we do have a few guidelines we can use, however. First, we can say this: one of the show's writers [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Battlestar_Wiki:Official_Communiques/Archive8#Identity_of_the_Final_Five said], "The fifth (which may change) we've been kicking around [as a Cylon possibility] since about the end of Season One." So anyone introduced after the end of Season One is most likely not a possibility. Second, the shows' creators have confirmed that both [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Hera_Agathon Hera] and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Nicholas_Tyrol Nicky] <i>are</i> half-<b><u>human</u></b>, half-Cylon kids; that means that [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Karl_Agathon Karl Agathon] isn't, and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Cally Callandra "Cally" Henderson] wasn't, a Cylon. Third, there was an [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/The_Last_Supper <i>Entertainment Weekly</i> picture] in which the show's head, Ron D. Moore, [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/The_Last_Supper#The_.22Clues.22 admitted] that the Final Cylon wasn't any of the people pictured. Pictured were [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/William_Adama both] [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Lee_Adama Adamas], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Laura_Roslin Roslin], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Gaius_Baltar Baltar], and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Kara_Thrace Starbuck], as well as three of the four [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Saul_Tigh T][http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Samuel_Anders A]F[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Galen_Tyrol T] Cylons revealed at the end of last season.

The main rationale I'd use is that a fifth Cylon has to have a very large punch to the series. The "skinjob" models led up to the revelation of four of the final five, which at the end of last season had everyone going, "<b><u>What</u></b>! <b><u>The</u></b>! <b><u>FUCK?!?!?!?</u></b>" The revelation of the four will be a similar buildup to the Fifth. (In other words, in terms of shock value, skinjob : final four :: final four : fifth.)

So, who is left? Assume that the Fifth is a somewhat major character -- because if it's Third Specialist Fifth Class Joe Schmoe, the fans would riot. When the above are removed, you're left with [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Felix_Gaeta Gaeta], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Anastasia_Dualla Dualla], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Tom_Zarek Zarek], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Cottle Cottle], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Seelix Seelix], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Margaret_Edmondson Racetrack], and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Brendan_Constanza Hot Dog]. If you bring in the dead as possibilities (never entirely out of the question), then you add to the equation [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Ellen_Tigh Ellen], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Billy_Keikeya Billy], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/James_Lyman Jammer], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Louanne_Katraine Kat], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Crashdown Crashdown], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Socinus Socinus], [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Elosha Elosha], Adm. [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Helena_Cain Cain], and [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Kendra_Shaw Kendra Shaw].

Of the dead, I think we can rule out Ellen, because of her [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Virtual_beings#Saul_Tigh.27s_Virtual_Ellen appearance] in the last episode in Tigh's hallucination ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Escape_Velocity Escape Velocity]). Dramatically, they wouldn't ruin the revelation by making it a gradual reveal. Kat's cute but she didn't appear in Season One and was more of a comic character (aside from her "noble death" episode) ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/The_Passage The Passage]). Adm. Cain's story was too nicely wrapped up by [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Razor/Full_Article <i>Razor</i>] -- to me, it just doesn't seem like a good dramatic choice. Billy's story, too, was too poignantly told for his reappearance to be a good dramatic choice: could've been President ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Home%2C_Part_II Home, Part II]), mom-son relationship with Roslin ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Sacrifice Sacrifice]), love triangle with Dualla ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Tigh_Me_Up%2C_Tigh_Me_Down Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]) -- great potential cut short and loving relationships severed by senseless gunshot ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Sacrifice Sacrifice]). And Kendra was only introduced just now in the fourth season, and the writers have been kicking around the fifth Cylon as a possibility since the first season.

Returning to the alive characters, I don't think it's Seelix, Racetrack or Hot Dog -- they're good characters, but they're very peripheral to the show, and it'd feel almost as bad a cheat as Third Specialist Schmoe. (Although with Hot Dog being played by [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Bodie_Olmos Edward James Olmos's son], y'never know ... )

Of the remaining four -- Gaeta, Dualla, Zarek and Cottle -- my guess is this: I think the [http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Humanoid_Cylon_speculation Final Cylon] is Doc Cottle. And unlike the Final Four already revealed, I think he's always knows he's a Cylon and is going to be an explanatory vehicle for the writers as to the existence of the Final Five, why they break the aforementioned Cylon guidelines, the storyline, etc. I think he's the oldest character on the show, too, which would make making him a Cylon and letting him be an explanatory vehicle be a natural choice. (It even could be that Tigh was introduced as a Cylon to more gradually acclimate the fans to the idea of long-amongst-humanity Cylons, so that when Cottle is revealed, the concept doesn't feel as if it was a last-minute shoehorn into the plot.)

It also makes nice symmetry, as I think there are <i>six</i> kinds (not models, kinds) of Cylon.

{| width="75%" border="1" align="center"
| align="center" valign="middle" | Humanoid Cylon,<br />sleeper:<br />''[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Sharon_Valerii Valerii]''
| align="center" valign="middle" | Humanoid Cylon,<br />always knew it:<br />''Nos 1-6, other 8s''
| rowspan="2" align="center" valign="middle" |
Half-<br />Mech,<br />Half-<br />Skinjob:<br />"[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Hybrid Hybrids]"
| rowspan="2" align="center" valign="middle" |
Full Mech:<br />[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Cylon_Centurion_%28RDM%29 Centurion],<br />[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Raider_%28RDM%29 Raider]<br />brains
|-
| align="center" valign="middle" | TAFT1-style<br />"Mystical Cylon",<br />sleeper:<br />''Tigh, Anders,<br />Foster, Tyrol''
| align="center" valign="middle" | TAFT1-style<br />"Mystical Cylon",<br />always knew it:<br />''no characters <u>yet</u><br />revealed with this trait''
|}

Having a TAFT-style Cylon who always knew he was a TAFT-style Cylon would complete the symmetry perfectly.

Of all the possibilities, Cottle also is the one who has repeatedly interacted with and affected the fate of the very top-level characters (Roslin, Adamas, Baltar, Starbuck, Valerii/Agathon). He treated Roslin (cancer) ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Act_of_Contrition Act of Contrition]), Adama (gunshot) ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Fragged Fragged]), and Starbuck (leg) ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Separation Six Degrees of Separation]), was an effective opposite to Baltar in a number of scenes ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Epiphanies Epiphanies]), and delivered Hera ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Downloaded Downloaded]). He had no qualms about treating Cylons during the occupation ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Exodus,_Part_I Exodus Pt. 1]), yet wasn't treated as a traitor by the Circle ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Collaborators Collaborators]). Arguably, also, he's one of the best choices to still get a reaction out of fans: everyone <i>likes</i> cranky ol' Cottle. Throughout the series, he's been the truthteller, the character who consistently "told truth to power"; he's been a nice lovable grump for the entire series -- making him a Cylon would <i>definitely</i> get <b>significant</b> fan reaction.

And as a nice cap to the idea, in D'Anna's last appearance prior to being boxed, we saw her recognize one of the Final Five Cylons and be surprised and apologize ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Rapture Rapture]). Earlier, during the occupation on New Caprica, D'Anna had interacted with Cottle and had a brief but amiable conversation in which D'Anna was a little smarmy, even, to boot ([http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Exodus,_Part_I Exodus Pt. 1]).
'''Doctor S. Cottle''' is ''[[Galactica]]'s'' Chief Medical Officer ([[CMO]]). As the ship is operating with a minimal crew complement leading up to its [[Miniseries|expected decommissioning]], Cottle is the only real physician/surgeon aboard ''Galactica'', supported by a handful of medics such as [[Layne Ishay]] and [[Howard Kim]]. While Cottle also acts as the Fleet's CMO, conducting inspections on other ships, there are also civilian physicians like Dr. [[Robert]] ([[The Woman King]]) and Dr. [[Stoffa]] ([[Hero]]), though the latter might be a clinical psychologist and not a medical doctor.

Cottle is somewhat eccentric and is considered a "bastard" among some of ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> crew, in addition to his penchant for being a heavy smoker, despite knowing the risks, and one not overly impressed by positions of power. He is, above all things, a healer. To him, nothing else really matters, be it rank, riches, or species.

== Biography ==

Cottle is the third person in the Fleet to learn about President [[Laura Roslin]]'s fight with cancer ([[Act of Contrition]]), after [[Lee Adama]] ([[Bastille Day]]) and [[Billy Keikeya]] ([[Miniseries]]). He agrees to treat her condition, without revealing it to anyone else, and further agrees to support more unorthodox treatments such as [[chamalla]] extract (against his better judgment). Knowing the extent of her illness and Roslin's reluctance to undergo [[Doloxan]] therapy, the doctor also recommends prayer.

Cottle takes a personal interest in [[Kara Thrace]]'s recovery from injuries suffered during a mission ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]). The doctor works with Lee Adama to get her out of sickbay ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]) without initial success.

Grumpy yet always professional, Cottle instantly inspires trust, despite his attitude.

After the assassination attempt on [[William Adama]], ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]) Cottle is unavailable to stabilize the Commander as he is aboard another ship in the Fleet. Matters worsen after ''Galactica'''s jump to the [[Emergency Jump Coordinates|emergency coordinates]] separates Cottle and the battlestar. [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] orders Cottle's medics to stop Adama's internal bleeding ([[Scattered]]). However, while the medics stabilize the Commander's condition, they are unable to fully stop his bleeding. Cottle finally arrives and is able to operate on Commander Adama. After much risky work, the doctor saves Adama's life ([[Fragged]]).

Cottle speaks rather contemptuously of Colonel [[Saul Tigh]]'s authority. When Tigh asks of Adama's condition as Cottle begins surgery to save the Commander's life, he tells the XO, "How should I know? I'm not a psychic. Now get the hell out of here" ([[Fragged]]). Later, after Tigh orders an ill-advised attempt to restore supply runs to ''Galactica'' on the ''[[Gideon]]'', resulting in four civilian deaths, Cottle is anything but sympathetic when Tigh asks what happened: "What'd you expect, genius? You put a pilot in charge of crowd control" ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

At the request of President Roslin, despite her straight-to-the-point warning about its illegality and danger (Cottle: "You're a lousy salesman."), he assists Roslin in escaping ''Galactica'' by filing a request for a [[Raptor]] flight away from the battlestar, to care for patients on other ships. Roslin leaves ''Galactica'' on this "appropriated" Raptor with [[Lee Adama]] at the helm ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Major Cottle performs a series of medical scans on [[Gaius Baltar]]'s head at Baltar's request. Unknown to Cottle, Baltar is looking to see if there is a Cylon computer chip implanted into his brain. The scans show absolutely nothing unusual, and Cottle dismisses Baltar as a hypochondriac ("There's one on every bloody ship.") ([[Home, Part II]]).

Even Cottle's stony exterior gives way to the pain he sees on Laura Roslin's face when he gives her a new prognosis on her fight with cancer. Her cancer has spread aggressively, and the good doctor gives Roslin, on the outside, one month to live ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]). His concern for Cylon [[Sharon Agathon|Sharon Valerii]] and her unborn [[Hera Agathon|hybrid child]] is remarkable, especially in the face of the rest of the crew's distrust and even hatred of her, hinting at his extremely strict sense of medical ethics. He describes her attempted rape by Lt. [[Thorne]] as "unforgivable," and voices his opposition to Baltar using Sharon's baby's blood as a cure for Roslin's cancer "([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]", "[[Epiphanies]]").

Cottle gains a reputation among the Fleet for performing abortions. When [[Rya Kibby]], a young [[Gemenon (RDM)|Gemenese]] girl, wanted to end her pregnancy, she stows away to get aboard ''Galactica'' and see Cottle. Cottle explains the situation to Admiral Adama by acknowledging, "I get a note that a girl's on the way. She arrives. I do my work. And then she leaves. I don't ask a lot of questions." When Admiral Adama asks Kibby to return to her parents, Cottle suggests that the girl instead request political asylum aboard ''Galactica'', earning a stare from Adama ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

After the election of President [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] and the settlement of [[New Caprica]], Cottle, like most of ''Galactica'''s crew, retires from military duty. One year after the election he serves as a doctor on New Caprica in private practice ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

During the Cylon occupation of the planet, Cottle continues his work as a doctor and surgeon. He works as a neutral party in the Cylon-run state in [[New Caprica City]], treating human and Cylon alike. When a copy of [[Number Three]] (likely [[D'Anna Biers]]) questions why he does this he tells her he would do the same for anyone who came to him ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

After the events on [[New Caprica]], Cottle is forced to deal with varying cases of illnesses as [[Galactica (RDM)|''Galactica'']] takes on refugees. Among one of the diseases, [[Mellorak infection]] is discovered. Hoping to conserve as much of the dwindling supply of medicines as possible, he assigns the medication for Mellorak to ''Galactica'' personnel for immunization and all others on a need basis. Due to the inquisitive nature of [[Karl Agathon]], the appointed 'mayor of [[Dogsville]]', Cottle investigates the activity of his long time friend, [[Michael Robert]]. After performing extensive autopsies on a few of Robert's patients, Cottle discovers that Robert is killing patients based on their birth colony, mainly those from [[Sagittaron]]. Cottle, with help from [[Saul Tigh]], puts an end to Robert's practices ([[The Woman King]]).

Shortly after discovering that [[Laura Roslin]]'s cancer had returned, Cottle starts Roslin's [[Doloxan]] treatment. After it is completed, he, along with his medical staff, are completely flabberghasted when Roslin and [[Sharon Agathon]] wake up screaming simultaneously. Unfortunately, it is not known whether he is informed of the vision that the two, plus [[Caprica-Six]], shared ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).

== Notes ==

*Cottle's counterpart in the [[TOS|Original Series]] is [[Salik]].
*Doctor Cottle is holding the rank of [[Major]], though he would not be a line officer. He would never take command unless every senior officer is out of commission.
*In the DVD commentary for "[[Act of Contrition]]", RDM states that actor Donnelly Rhodes was one of the three finalists up for the role of Colonel [[Saul Tigh]], though in the end the part was given to one of the other finalists, [[Michael Hogan]].
*Doctor Cottle is named after Michael Rymer's childhood pediatrician, who Rymer tells was actually a very nice person, unlike his fictional counterpart.
*Doctor Cottle is first mentioned in "[[Bastille Day]]", but the character does not appear until the next episode, "[[Act of Contrition]]".
My advice, buy them now because they will not be around for long." (January 12, 2007). Although the Cylon Centurion was produced, to date no retailers have received the figures. However, two figures, possibly misappropriated, reached private hands via an ebay auction based in the United States in early 2007, and several more from ebay auctions based in Hong Kong followed. The companies of [http://www.artasylum.com Art Asylum] and [http://www.diamondselecttoys.com/ Diamond Select Toys] are partnering to create the Battlestar Galactica '''MiniMates''', coming sometime in the Fall, 2006.

[[Wikipedia:Minimates|MiniMates]] are small articulated action figures that are similar to the popular [[Wikipedia:Lego|Lego]] toys. The BSG MiniMates will include major characters from the [[Re-imagined Series]] and [[TOS|Original Series]].

The BSG Minimates will use the current style of Minimate body and therefore be around 2" in size.

There have been several delays and changes to the release schedule for the BSG Minimates,
Several waves of various characters have been announced and subsequently debunked.

Series one is confirmed as containing the following Minimates 2-Packs; Admiral Cain/Starbuck, Apollo/Dualla, Cylon/Six with red dress and the chase Six with white dress.

Series one will also contain five different variations of Cylon Centurions packed in cases of 12 that are NOT blind boxed. In each case of 12 figures you will find:

4x Standard Cylon
3x Cannon Cylon
2x Battle Damaged Cylon,
2x Valley of Darkness Cylon
1x Downloaded Cylon (Chrome in color)

Cylons began shipping from Diamond Comics Distributors on December 21, 2006.[http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.php?showtopic=1392&st=60]

Additionally, Art Asylum created a special "Elf" or "Santa" Cylon figure (one has a green hat, the other has a red hat) as a Christmas Giveaway. [http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.php?s=d7894fe2604e36afc28414224f6f6d66&showtopic=1394]
''Cylons Invade Diamond Select Toys''

''Just in time for the hugely-anticipated third season comes the first Battlestar Galactica Minimate release – featuring none other than those villainous toasters, the Cylons! With both modern and classic versions of the dreaded Cylon Centurions, each assortment will be limited to only 500 cases!''

''Each Minimate will be individually boxed with a suggested retail of $5.00 each. With the modern assortments, be on the lookout for the variant gun-hand and battle-damaged Centurions as well as the limited chrome and bloody Centurions! In the classic Battlestar Galactica cases, watch out for the gold Command Centurion as well as the chrome and battle-damaged variants. Designed and sculpted by Art Asylum, each Cylon Minimate features an intricately designed body created using the series’ own digital production files!''

''Be prepared to hunt down each and every Cylon once their Fall 2006 release date arrives, because you can bet they’ll be gunning for you...''
== Overview ==
:''[[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] makes a stop at a planet and discovers the location of a [[The Temple of Five|religious artifact]] that may further lead the way to [[Earth]]—for both the Colonials and the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]].''

== Summary ==
* The [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] is mending its wounds from its passage to the [[algae planet]]. The harvest proceeds well and is into its 14th day, and appears to be closing up shop.
*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] flies from ''[[Galactica]]'' to the harvest camp in a [[Raptor]], intentionally creating more noise than usual. [[Lee Adama]] is managing the harvest operations with his wife, [[Anastasia Dualla]].
*When Major Adama leaves to greet Kara Thrace, Dualla's face barely hides her disappointment and frustration at Adama's hasty departure.
*Major Adama greets Thrace with an admonishment of her piloting, but his comments are very brief; the two pilots embrace and passionately kiss.
*Adama wants he and Thrace to stop hiding their feelings and divorce their respective spouses. Thrace reminds him that marriage in the eyes of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|gods]] is a sacrament; she has made a vow she will not break. Adama reminds her that their repeated secret encounters would be frowned on by the gods as well. Adama becomes frustrated, Thrace holds her position, and the two are left trapped in their feelings.
*On a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]], the little human/Cylon hybrid, [[Hera]], is crying and is not well. [[Gaius Baltar]] is awakened by her cries and visits the child, who is attended by the [[Number Eight]] known once as [[Sharon Valerii]].
*[[Galen Tyrol]] is part of the harvest team. He is repeatedly distracted by something which apparently only he can sense, and keeps looking out towards the unexplored hills beyond the harvest site. [[Samuel Anders]], also working on the harvest, comments that the algae harvest tastes as badly as it smells. Tyrol jokes that the algae is "breakfast, lunch and dinner until we can find a hot-fudge planet."
*After sensing something strange one time too many, Tyrol leaves the harvest camp and begins a trek to a mountainous area. He discovers a door--not a naturally-carved one, but a rectangular door, apparently constructed by human hands.
*Tyrol enters the door and walks through a passageway into an immensely large domed room, carved from within the mountain. In the center of the room is a center spire that reaches high into the structure. The spire is surrounded by five pentagonal obelisks. The center spire has ancient tribal carvings at the bottom, as well as illuminated crystalline pillars atop it. Tyrol, the son of a [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Clergy|priest]] and an [[oracle]], has a fair idea of what he has discovered: The [[Temple of Five]].
*[[Laura Roslin]] discusses what she knows with Tyrol over [[wireless]] about this special [[Temple|temple]] as it is told in the [[Sacred Scrolls]] in Admiral [[William Adama]]'s quarters. But before they can digest the information further, they are alerted to four [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] that [[FTL|jump]] into orbit of the planet and move towards the Fleet.
*Admiral Adama orders the civilian Fleet to escape to [[emergency jump coordinates]], but leaves ''[[Galactica]]'' behind; Adama does not want to repeat the situation on [[New Caprica]], where he retreated with the remains of the Fleet and abandoned the colonists there. Adama chooses to stay to protect his harvest team until they can escape. He and Roslin also agree that, if the Temple of Five has a marker to [[Earth]], they must not let the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] take it.
*However, very uncharacteristically, the Cylons do not attack. In fact, they request communications with Adama. The voice that Adama hears is not a welcome one: It is [[Gaius Baltar]]'s.
*The Cylons request a meeting on ''Galactica'' to discuss the [[Eye of Jupiter]]. The [[Number Three]] copy that Baltar calls [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]], a copy of [[Cavil]], Baltar, and the [[Number Eight]] copy once known as [[Sharon Valerii]] board the battlestar under heavy [[marine]] guard.
*The virtual [[Number Six]] in Baltar's mind warns him that, while he may feel like he has returned home, he cannot stay: The Colonials would "toss (him) into an airlock and have a party."
*On the way to the meeting, [[Sharon Agathon]] recognizes the Eight copy as the former "Boomer" Valerii. Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] denies her entry into the meeting. The two Eights are left outside the doorway, facing each other with mutual looks of contempt.
*The two sides meet. Baltar attempts to take the initiative in an attempt to serve as a mediator, but this infuriates Roslin so strongly that she leaves the meeting. Adama receives the Cylon's terms: Leave peacefully so that they can gather the [[Eye of Jupiter]], and they will not attack. Cavil, with a sardonic face, adds the surrender of Baltar to the terms as well, to the former president's and Three's shock, "to sweeten the pot."
*Boomer-Eight tells Sharon Agathon that Hera is alive, but unwell, on their basestar. Agathon refuses to believe her.
*Admiral Adama is not amused by the Cylon's deal. Close to Three's face, Adama states his terms: ''Galactica'' will destroy the planet's treasures with his nuclear arsenal should the Cylons attempt to land on the planet. The two sides depart in a state of détente.
*Admiral Adama manages to get an order to his son of the situation and to destroy the site if the Cylons invade before the Cylons jam all wireless communications.
*Major Adama instructs Samuel Anders to organize fireteams to defend against a probable Cylon incursion. Anders, also realizing what Adama has been doing with Thrace, is very angry and initially refuses to oblige until Thrace asks him to comply.
*[[Cally Tyrol|Cally]] and Galen Tyrol speak in the temple. He tells her of how he was annoyed at his parents and their worship. Cally sees reverence on his face, despite his general mood of disbelief.
*Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] has conducted some scans of the star system of the algae planet. He warns that the sun of this system is in danger of becoming a supernova very soon. Gaeta, who normally is as secular as his commander, finds it very strange how the Cylons and Colonials arrive at this one place at this time just before the planet's imminent destruction. Adama notes that the "higher powers" at work appear to have a strange sense of humor.
*The [[basestar command]], with Baltar in attendance, discuss their plan to get the Eye. Cavil feels that annilihation of ''Galactica'' is the best option with the standoff (given that they are machines that can wait out humanity for years and find Earth eventually).
*D'Anna, without consulting the other Cylons, has solely initiated the jamming of Colonial communications, and has already sent a [[Heavy Raider]] with a squad of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] to the planet as the basestar fleet jumped in, successfully avoiding Colonial detection. This action confuses the others, particularly [[Caprica-Six]].
*D'Anna notes that, as soon as the Centurions recover the Eye, the other Cylons can destroy ''Galactica''.
*The Centurions on the planet are seen connecting additional materials to their back as they march away from their ship.
*The Colonials, with Anders at the lead, plan out their defense on the planet. One team will manage ammunition distribution, another team will create [[tylium]] mines.
*As the harvest team-turned-point defense teams leave the tent, Major Adama compliments Anders for his honest, to-the-point direction to the group, indicating that Anders would make a good officer. Anders scoffs at Adama's compliment, inferring that he knows what Adama and Thrace have been doing. When Adama tries to object, Anders tells Adama not to insult his intelligence, as he is aware that Adama is not that only one that Thrace has enjoyed sexual company with.
*On the basestar, in the [[Hybrid]]'s room, D'Anna-Three is savoring the opportunity to see the faces of the final five [[Cylon agent]]s--"maybe the face of [[God]] himself." The Hybrid notes, in her quizzical manner, that the "five lights of the apocalypse" and the "sins" will be revealed only to the "chosen one," lifting her head and staring directly at Baltar as she repeats, "the chosen one." D'Anna's eyes are closed and is not aware that the Hybrid is addressing Baltar.
*Caprica-Six enters and questions D'Anna's intentions. D'Anna dismisses their three-way relationship as she tells of her plan to leave with Baltar to discover the secrets of the Temple. Six is visibly hurt at being left behind.
*The planet team begin their final preparations, led by Dualla. With [[wireless]] jammed, she notes how hardwired observation points are to be created to warn of any Cylon advance, with Starbuck's Raptor taking point with directions to fly to the nearest observation point to relay any sightings. Thrace's annoyance at Dualla's precise direction leads to some catty replies by Thrace, which Dualla ignores.
*As the observation teams take their positions, Starbuck begins her recon flight. As she turns along a ravine, she spots the Centurion emplacement and is immediately fired upon by the Cylon's missile battery. Starbuck tries to evade and successfully manages to relay that she found Centurions before her Raptor is struck by a missile. With the controls on fire and visibility lost, Starbuck screams as she keeps her hands on the flight controls and fights for control of the Raptor. The [[Battle of the Algae Planet]] begins.
*As President Roslin explores what little is known about the Temple of Five from the Sacred Scrolls, Admiral Adama interrupts her, telling her of Boomer's return and asking if the story of Hera's faked death was true. Roslin admits the truth. When she tries to explain the reasons why, Adama abruptly leaves in anger.
*Adama tells the Agathons of Hera's discovery, and both are incensed. When Helo argues how painful it was for them and how Adama should know the pain of the moment, Adama reminds him that, unlike [[Zak Adama|his son]], their child is still alive, and that they should be grateful for that. Sharon Agathon glares at Adama and says she wants to see her child, inferring a greater intention.
*Major Adama reports to Anders that Starbuck's Raptor has gone down, but also tells him that a rescue mission is out of the question; they haven't enough manpower to rescue Thrace and defend their position.
*Six Heavy Raiders leave a basestar towards the planet.
*''Galactica'' sees the Heavy Raiders on [[DRADIS]] immediately. Tigh feels that this is a test to see if the Colonials are bluffing. Roslin believes that they were bluffing until Adama orders [[Hoshi]] to arm of a series of missile tubes, each containing a nuclear missile.
*As Anders argues for Thrace's rescue, Lee Adama explodes in defense of the mission, arguing the point that he has known and cared for Thrace for much longer than Anders, who tells Adama he is going after his wife. Adama's troops hold Anders at gunpoint.
*Unaware how events are escalating around and above him, Chief Tyrol illuminates the carved writings of the Temple with his flashlight and reads the inscriptions, trying to locate the actual resting place of the Eye. At one point, his flashlight's beam moves close to the target-shaped symbol in the center of the central spire.
*The basestar command detects the [[Radiological alarm|radiation signature]] of the missiles as ''Galactica'' targets the Temple.
*Adama authorizes the release of the missiles.

== Questions ==
*Will Adama go through with his plan to nuke the planet?
*Did Starbuck survive the crash of her Raptor?
*What is the [[Eye of Jupiter]] and how does it point the way to [[Earth]]?
*How much truth is there to Anders' claim of Kara Thrace's chronic infidelity ("You think you're the first?")?
*How will Athena and Helo knowing their child is still alive affect their relationship with Adama?
*How will Adama finding out Hera is still alive affect his relationship with Roslin?
*Is there a connection between the Temple of the Five and the five missing Cylon models?
*Who or what is "The One Whose Name Cannot Be [Told(?)]" whom the Five supposedly follow? Is this a reference to [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Jealous God|the Jealous God]], who may or may not be the "one true God" of the Cylons?
*What are the "sins" of the Five that the Hybrid speaks of?
*Who is the "Chosen One" that the Hybrid speaks of?
*What consequences will Number Three's actions have within the Cylon society?
*Why does D'Anna feel that Caprica-Six cannot accompany her and Baltar?
*What is the Fleet doing without the presence of ''Galactica''?
*Will there be further confrontations between the two "Sharon Valerii"-type [[Number Eight|Eight]] models, as seen in the passageway tirade between [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] and [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]]?
*Were the Cylons really willing to hand Baltar over to the Fleet?
*When did [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] go over to the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons']] way of thinking? In this episode she clearly doesn't seem to think of herself as human anymore like she did in "[[Downloaded]]."
*Was the Cylon that was pointed out to be Boomer the same one that has been seen amongst the Cylon baseship leadership? If so, then her turning over to the Cylon side was complete by the time the Cylons had abandoned New Caprica.
*Is there a connection between Athena & Helo's Hera and the Eye of Jupiter?
*Does Dualla know about the affair between Lee and Kara?
*Will Hera be rescued from the Cylon baseship and returned to Athena?
*Did Adama inform Athena and Helo that it was the President who ordered the secret adoption of Hera?
*What, if anything, will happen when the shaft of light reaches the center of the symbol in the temple? Is this in some way related to the imminent supernova?
*If Adama does fire the nuclear weapons, will the Baseships destroy them before they reach the surface?
*What were the specifics of the Target Package selected by Adama? (see Analysis)

== Analysis ==
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster.
*This episode ends the debate whether [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] knew about [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]]'s secret plan to hide [[Hera]] ("[[Downloaded]]", "[[Exodus, Part I]]") -- he did not know.
*[[Caprica-Six]] and [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]]'s dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]].
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking to Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go nova within days.
*At an unknown point in time, ''Galactica'' acquired at least three more nuclear warheads, bringing the total to at least six; beginning the series with five and using one to destroy a basestar ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]) and another being detonated by [[Gina]] on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). ''[[Pegasus]]'' may be the source, as these warheads may have been resupplied from ''Pegasus'''s arsenal, which likely occurred during the events of "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]".
*When the Hybrid speaks of the Chosen One, she looks directly at Baltar, not D'Anna, who has her eyes closed.
*Kara Thrace's explanation of marriage as a sacrament is similar to the [[w:Annulment (Catholic Church)|principles of the Roman Catholic Church]]. In this religion, a marriage between a baptized man and woman is one of the seven sacraments of the faith. A sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved, but only reviewed later to determine if the marriage was valid at all. If the marriage is invalid, an annulment is allowed. This suggests, by extension, that Thrace and Anders have had [[dedication ceremony|dedication ceremonies]] (the Colonial equivalent of baptism) if such a requirement is needed by the gods.
*The [[tylium]] planned for the mines could only come from their single Raptor. This supports the [[Substances in the Re-imagined Series#The Tylium Question|high energy yield of the fuel]] that, at the same time, would not sacrifice the Raptor's flight ability.

== Notes ==
*Writer [[Jane Espenson]] revealed that this episode was originally titled "Eye of [[Zeus]]."<ref name="espenson-2">{{cite_web|url=http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/12/11/jane-espenson-on-post-the-passage-questions/|title=TV Squad: Jane Espenson on post-The Passage questions|date=11 November 2006|accessdate=11 November 2006|last=McDuffee|first=Keith|format=|language=English}}</ref>
*This episode, whose teaser clocks in at just over 11 minutes, has the longest teaser of any episode thus far, narrowly beating out that of "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]".
*Outdoor sequences of the algae planet were filmed near Kamloops, British Columbia [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/video/index.php?cat=videoBlog&vid=46979].
*This episode was screened in movie theaters in six cities (New York, Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles) by TV Guide as a free promotional on December 14, 2006 one day before the United States airing. The source was a digital copy with no commercials. In at least two cities (Chicago and Los Angeles) writers from the show held a Q&A session after for fans. Also in at least two cities more than one screening was held. [http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=700013556]
== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''Cylon baseship requests to speak with Admiral Adama''
::'''Adama''': Put it through speaker. This is Admiral Adama.
::'''Baltar''': Admiral. I can't tell you what a genuine pleasure it is to hear your voice. This is Gaius Baltar.

*''Baltar and Internal-Six discuss boarding the Galactica'':
::'''Six''': Feels like old times, doesn't it?
::'''Baltar''': Can't believe how much I actually missed this place.
::'''Six''': You know you can't return. They'd toss you out the nearest airlock and then throw a party.

*''Lee and Kara, discussing contingency plans:''
::'''Kara''': Can I make a suggestion you won't like?
::'''Lee''': Do you make any other kind?

*''The Hybrid, giving more obscure prophecy:''
::'''Hybrid''': The five lights of the apocalypse rising, struggling towards the light... sins revealed only to those who enter the temple... only to the chosen one... the chosen one... the chosen one...
::'''Three''': The Five await me. Gaius, I'm so close to knowing the truth!

*''During a meeting between Roslin and Adama with Baltar and the Cylons''
::'''Roslin''': The less this man says, the better this will go.
::'''Baltar''': Wait a minute. If it wasn't for me the Cylons would've blown you out of the sky two seconds after we'd arrived.
::'''Roslin''': (''Roslin to Adama'') I think you can handle this without me. . . if you can stomach it.

== Official Statements ==

''[[Jane Espenson]] discusses the original name for "The Eye of Jupiter" and references to it in "[[The Passage]]:"''

: "When I wrote this episode, the upcoming episode was already well along, and it was called "Eye of [[Zeus]]." So all the dialogue in my episode reflected that. It got changed to Jupiter later, and I don't know why. It's always hard to get names to legally clear. All you need is one guy named Zeus who lives in [[w:North Hollywood|North Hollywood]] and [[w:Standards and Practices|Standards and Practices]] is all over you to change the name. (deadpan) That's probably what happened."<ref name="espenson-2"/>
