Re-Imagined Series
The Cylon Attack (or technically, the "Second Cylon War") was the final attack by the Cylons on the Twelve Colonies of Kobol 40 years after the cessation of hostilities in the First Cylon War, the opening shot being the destruction of the Armistice Station by a basestar.

Carefully planned out by the Cylons, Humanity's defeat was ensured by Humano-Cylon agents, such as Number 6; Number 6 ensured that backdoors were placed in the Command Navigation Program, thus eliminating the Colonials' ability to resist.

As a result of the re-emergence of network technologies (see: Cylon War), the Cylons could now repeat a tactic they had previously used.

As the Colonial Fleet, under the command of Admiral Nagala onboard the Battlestar Atlantia, was ripped asunder by Cylon forces, the Cylons began deploying nuclear warfare against the Colonies, resulting in the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Out of billions of humans, only 50,000 survived and escaped their Cylon enemies under the leadership of the battlestar Galactica (Mini-Series) or the handful of people in the mountains that survived to form the resistance movement on Caprica. Also, there were other survivors that didn't make the rendezvous at Ragnar in time such as the Battlestar Pegasus, under the command of Admiral Nelena Cain.

Original Series
: Additional information is available on the Thousand Yahren War.

The Cylon Attack was a sneak attack, similar to Pearl Harbor. After 1000 yahrens of war, the Humans vied for peace with Lord Baltar acting as diplomat. (see: Cimtar Peace Accord) The peace was to become official at Cimtar, a moon believed to be neutral territory. Instead of peace, the Cylons launched their largest onslaught ever against the Colonials.

The Cylons began a two-pronged attack:

First Prong: Elimination of the Battlestars at Cimtar
: Additional information is available on the Battle of Cimtar (TOS).

The Cylons used Cimtar as a launch platform for fighter groups, supported by Cylon tankers for fuel operations. Using their Raiders, the Cylons attacked the battlestars there. All battlestars, save the already-prepared Galactica, were destroyed; the Cylons were thwarted from destroying the entire human presence there. Leaving the survivors and Viper pilots of that battle, the Galactica headed towards the Twelve Colonies in a vain effort to protect their homeworlds.

Second Prong: The Attack on the Colonies
Cylon basestars snuck by Colonial defenses, allowing an undefended attack on the Colonies. The home planets were bombed and the Cylons exterminated all humans that survived, save those who were fortunate enough to escape and flee the Colonies to join the Fleet Commander Adama assembled.

Developed by Dr. Gaius Baltar, the Command Navigation Program (CNP) was a program utilized by the Colonial military forces of the Twelve Colonies. Installed in Vipers, Raptors and Battlestars, it was a contrivance that was more than two years in the making.

Unbeknownst to Baltar, a version of the Humano-Cylon agent Number Six, who aided in programming the CNP, also programmed backdoors into the program so that the Cylon attack force could infiltrate and destroy any offending ships without so much as a retaliatory response. Ships with the CNP that received a command from an attacking Cylon ship would see their power, defense networks, and computers shut down as if a switch were flipped.

The CNP was dispersed as with all Colonial software updates via the Colonial Defense Mainframe, where Six had unrestricted access on Baltar's authorization.

The CNP was received by the Galactica, but the program was never loaded into primary memory (Mini-Series). Lieutenant Felix Gaeta has the program code purged from the mainframe on Baltar's suggestion, and the program was also deleted from the flight systems of any of the Galactica's surviving Mark VII Vipers and Raptors that had previously received the upgrade.
Doctor Cottle is the Battlestar Galactica's irrascible Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Because the ship was operating with a minimal crew compliment leading up to its pending decomissioning, Cottle is the only real physician aboard the Galactica, supported by a handful of medics like Ishay. In keeping with Sci-Fi medical officers, he is somewhat eccentric -- a heavy smoker, despite knowing the risks, and one not overly impressed by positions of power.

Biography
He is the third person in the fleet to learn about President Laura Roslin's cancer condition (Act of Contrition), after Lee Adama (Bastille Day) and Billy Keikeya (Mini-Series). He has agreed to treat her condition, without revealing it to anyone else - and has further agreed to help her with more unorthodox treatments such as Chamalla Extract. His most recent examinations of her confirmed that the cancer had begun to attack her lymphatic system, giving her some six months to live.

He took a personal interest in Starbuck's recovery after she broke her leg (You Can't Go Home Again), and worked with Lee Adama to get her out of sickbay (Six Degrees of Separation) -- without success.

Grumpy of attitude, yet always professional, Cottle instantly inspires trust, despite his attitude.

After the assassination attempt on William Adama, (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II) Cottle was unavailable to help stabilize the Commander. This was worsened after Galacticas jump to different coordinates than the Fleet; his medics were ordered by Colonel Tigh to stop the internal bleeding. (Scattered) However, while they stabilized his condition they were unable to fully stop the bleeding. Cottle finally arrived and was able to begin surgery on Commander Adama, and after much risky work was able to safe his life. (Fragged)

At the request of President Roslin, he assists her in escaping Galactica by filing a request for a raptor flight away from Galactica, to care for patients on other ships. Roslin left Galactica on this raptor, which was cleared for launch because it was believed to be carrying Cottle to patients, and not the president ("Resistance"). Major Cottle then peformed a series of medical scans on Gaius Baltar's head at Baltar's request. Unknown to Cottle, Baltar was looking to see if there was a Cylon computer chip implanted into his brain. The scans showed absolutely nothing, and Cottle dismissed Baltar as a hypochondriac (Home, Part II).

The Cylon Basestars (also referred to as "baseships" or "Cylon battlestars") are by far the most prominent example of Cylon presence in the known universe. They easily dwarf a colonial battlestar and appear to be technologically superior in every way, including being able to release wings of hundreds of Cylon raiders at the same time (according to the number of launch "slots" on the Basestar, it can release 792 Raiders).

Beyond this, not much is known. Basestar operations would suggest that they have large crew complements although there is ample evidence to suggest their operations are largely automated. Indeed, the large complement of raiders would suggest on board manufacturing facilities (The BSG Bible).
Its weapons complement indicates missiles on a similar principle to the United States' VLS system capable of launching coventional or nuclear missiles.

Legend states that the Arrow is the one surviving clue to location of the planet Earth (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). According to accounts of the scriptures of Pythia and Laura Roslin's statement to the Quorum of Twelve, the arrow is a key of sorts, which will open the Tomb of Athena.
While the city itself suffered extensive damage as a result of bombing during the Cylon attack, the Arrow survived undamaged. It becomes the focal point of Laura Roslin's attempts to discover the whereabouts of Earth following the apparently accidental discovery of Kobol by the Colonial fleet (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). These attempts lead to Lieutenant Kara Thrace disobeying orders and taking a captured Cylon Raider to Caprica.

WayneC:

Overview
Kobol is said to be the original home of mankind, once shared with the Lords of Kobol.

Kobol is a verdant world of seas and continents, the latter having large swathes of woodland, grassland and forests (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).

Kobol was a place where humans and the gods dwelt in harmony, the seat of power being the City of the Gods, itself dominated by the Forum and Opera House (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).

Great Exodus
The Great Exodus from Kobol took place some 2,000 years prior to the events of the new Battestar Galactica. At that time, the 12 tribes departed Kobol for the Cyrannus system (Video Game).

It is unclear whether the gods themselves departed Kobol at this time. However, given that their presence is not seen among the 12 colonies, it is possible they remained on Kobol. This may be the reason why not everyone departed Kobol at the time of the Great Exodus.

Certainly, it is known that the Thirteenth Tribe departed Kobol some time after the main exodus (Mini-Series), to seek a planet known as "(Earth)". The gods may also have abandoned Kobol at this time to travel with the Thirteenth Tribe.

Religious Texts
During the time humans lived on Kobol, many texts were written, some of which have survived through time, and are regarded by some as religious artifacts, and by others the documenting of myths and legends. Chief among these writings are those of Pythia, who wrote some 1,600 years prior to the Great Exodus, fortelling of another exodus featuring a "caravan of the heavens" lead by someone dying of a "wasting disease" (The Hand of God). This exodus would lead humanity to a new home, although the leader would die before he/she could enter the new home.

Some of the writings of Pythia have apparently come true: President Laura Roslin, the civil leader of the Colonial fleet is dying of cancer - which can be considered a wasting disease. Further, she has several visions, including one of 12 snakes (The Hand of God) that is specifically foretold by Pythia.

According to Six, the Cylons have very different beliefs about Kobol, including that human sacrifice was practiced there, and that the souls of all who die on Kobol are forever lost. (Valley of Darkness, Fragged)

Rediscovering Kobol
Kobol is re-discovered by chance when the Galactica dispatches her Raptors to locate planets which may provide materials needed to re-supply the fleet (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).

Following the discovery as predicted by the humano-Cylon Leoben Conoy, Roslin becomes convinced that Kobol will lead the fleet to Earth, providing the Tomb of Athena can be accessed. To do this, the Arrow of Apollo must be retreived from Caprica.

However, before the surface of Kobol can be reached safely (and the crew of a crashed Raptor rescued), a Cylon force lead by a basestar must be eliminated. It is planned to use the captured Cylon Raider to help with this, but before any plan can be put into action, Lt. "Starbuck" Thrace uses the Raider to go to Caprica in an attempt to recover the Arrow. Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I.

Kobol In the Original Series
In the original series Kobol was also the mother world where mankind originated. In that series, it was an ecological / environmental disaster that lead to the migration. During the migration, 12 tribes set out for the stars, but became lost in a starless void before stumbling into the worlds that would become the new twelve colonies of mankind, while the 13th again headed for a world called "Earth".

Kobol is rediscovered in the episode Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I, which sees a team from the Galactica arrive among the ruins of Eden, the planet's largest city. Here they seek to enter the tomb of the Ninth Lord of Kobol in order to find clues as to the route taken by the Thirteeth Tribe (Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II). A Cylon attack prevents them from doing so.

Similarities with the New Galactica
Both series of Galactica utilise Kobol in similar ways:

*It is the original home of mankind
*It is found by chance by both fleets
*A tomb may hold the key to the location of Earth
**Ninth Lord of Kobol - Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I
**Tomb of Athena - Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I
*The Colonials encounter Cylons at both.

Origins of "Kobol"
"Kobol" originally appears to have derived from "Kolob" which, according to the Mormon Book of Abraham is the "star nearest unto God". Glen A. Larson, creator of the original series is a member of the of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as such used Mormon imagery within the show, together with elements of Eygptian imagery that tend to reflect the time of Abraham and the Israelites.
