== Notes ==

* This episode is the first part of a three hour series finale<ref>http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2008/06/battlestars-fin.html</ref>.
* The episode does not have an opening teaser beyond the "Previously..." segment and a brief depiction of Galactica deckhands and several Baseship Number Eight pilots guiding passengers to ships and other ''Galactica'' bound ships from the Baseship. Nor does the opening credits include clips from the episode, the first time this has happened since the start of Season 3.
*We finally learn [[Sherman Cottle|Cottle]]'s first name: Sherman. Adama calls him by it when telling him he's too valuable for the fleet to lose.
* It is revealed that [[Laura Roslin]] had two sisters (one pregnant), and that they and her father were killed in an automobile accident at some point before she was appointed as Secretary of Education under the Adar Administration.
* Baltar's father appears for the first time, and it's confirmed that Baltar's accent is an affected one as he had previously admitted to doing so in [[Dirty Hands]].
* Baltar forgot then name of [[Caprica-Six]] despite having a relationship with her.
* Cultural oddity: keep an eye on the rear window of Baltar's limo for a recognizable Vancouver, B.C. street sign.
* After several episodes leaving the facts open to speculation, it is confirmed that the ''Galactica'' pilots that took part in the mutiny, such as [[Racetrack]], were incarcerated and not executed. Ronald D. Moore had previously said that Racetrack, [[Skulls]] and other mutiny participants were confined on the prison ship ''[[Astral Queen]]'' in his podcast for [[Deadlock]]. Also confirmed [[Galen Tyrol]] was imprisoned for his role in unwittingly helping Boomer to escape with Hera (a scene indicating this was filmed for "[[Islanded in a Stream of Stars]]" but cut from the televised version).
* For the first time in many episodes, the six surviving members of the [[Significant Seven]] appear in the same episode (albeit [[Leoben]] appears only in the opening recap).
* In the flashback to Starbuck's apartment, the painting of the Eye of Jupiter can be seen behind her when she opens the door.
*As Hybrid Anders is reciting his seemingly random phrases to a listening Admiral Adama and Captain Thrace he says "Slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of perfection" This is a variation of a real life quote made by [[Wikipedia:John Gillespie Magee, Jr|John Gillespie Magee, Jr.]] in his 1941 poem [[Wikipedia: High Flight|High Flight]]: "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..." [http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/highflig.htm]

== Analysis ==
*Cavil plans to use Hera to find out how she was created in order to continue the Cylon species, presumably through normal reproduction.
**It also proves both Starbuck's and Athena's worst fears that Cavil intends to dissect Hera to discover the secret of procreation.
*Roslin likely feels quite protective of Hera as despite being barely able to walk, she volunteers for the rescue mission (although her love for Adama likely also played a part in her decision).
*Cottle may be either the best doctor in the fleet or one of the only ones as Adama says he's too valuable for the fleet to lose on the rescue mission.
*Baltar seems conflicted when volunteers are called. This inner conflict stems from his earlier conversation with Lee Adama where he confessed that he had never done anything for purely selfless motivations with no gain for himself. He does not, however, cross the line and join the volunteers.
** If Baltar does join, then it would seem likely that all the elements are in place to fulfil the Opera House vision: Athena, Roslin, Caprica Six and Baltar will all be in pursuit of Hera.
*Much of the crew is loyal enough to Adama that they're willing to go on a likely one way mission to rescue someone just because he asked.
*In the brig Tyrol tells Helo-who is surprisingly civil even sympathetic toward Tyrol given his hand in the abduction-that they are all the same referring to the Eights. He says it as a word of advice and warning. That he made them the same and therefore can only expect betrayal from Athena as what happened to Tyrol at the hands of Boomer. However, given the fact that he has no first hand knowledge of making the Eights and the other Cylons and the psychic pain Galen suffered at the betrayal, his opinion most likely comes from deep, deep, abiding pain and not a intellectual analysis in his disregard of the individuality of Athena and the other Eights and particularly Athena's track record of loyalty. This also maybe a case of misery loves company and Tyrol wants to see Helo and Athena split up to allay his own feelings of being duped, by saying they are all a like and putting doubt in Helo's mind. Also, by claiming that Athena and the other Eights are just machines this could mitigate the guilt for his role in the abduction and possible death of Hera. If Athena is just a machine, then she cannot be hurt emotionally. She has no emotions, just a programmed facsimile. Tyrol wouldn't have to feel responsible for such pain he caused her since, as a machine, she can't really feel it sparing himself a lot of pain.
*The finale appears to be taking a character-driven approach, devoting significant screen time to pivotal flashbacks for the central characters that relate to their current circumstances.
**We see the first time Starbuck and Apollo' met, with hints alluding to their future romantic relationship.
**Roslin deals with the sudden death of her sisters and father by wading into a fountain. The gushing water cuts to a shot of her IV drip as she lies dying on Galactica.
**Baltar and Caprica six begin their relationship with an act of compassion on Six's part towards Baltar's father. Baltar's selfishness, a theme raised repeatedly in the episode, is contrasted with Caprica Six's seemingly genuine concern for [[Julius Baltar|Julius]].
*One of the shots in the opening sequence is of a sun rising over a blue planet: daybreak. It could also be a symbolization of renewed hope after the long four years of gloom and darkness.
*Hera is drawing "dots", as Cavil calls them, in the Cylon Homeworld. These are much more numerous than the simple line that she gave Starbuck, its at least a full page long. It seems to be an entire musical score. However not knowing that they are music notes Cavil can't see this.
*As Boomer stated in [[Islanded in a Stream of Stars]], her stolen Raptor had not yet had its FTL upgraded with Cylon technology. This explains why it took her 12 jumps to reach the Colony, while Racetrack arrived after what appeared to be a single jump.
*Someone left a picture of Athena about to kiss Hera on the head on the now abandoned memorial wall. Most likely it was Athena herself because Athena fears the worse and has given up on Hera's survival while Helo hasn't.

== Questions ==
=== Flashbacks ===
* To what is Adama's flashback conversation referring?
*Who was the the drunk driver that killer Roslin's sisters and father? Is he alive in the fleet today?
*Who is Sean Allison and why does his name sound familiar to Roslin?

===Mission to save Hera===
* How is [[Sam Anders]] able to provide the new location of [[the Colony]]?
** Given that it wasn't actually shown was it really Anders that gave the location?
* Did any of the other former mutineers, besides Racetrack and Skulls, volunteer to participate in the mission?
* As the episode began, ''Galactica'' was already being cannibalized for parts; does this mean it will be lacking vital components during the upcoming mission, or has Adama stopped the salvaging?

===Cavil's Plan===
* Has Cavil given up on the idea of salvaging Resurrection Technology?

===Miscellaneous===
*Which the Admiral, XO, President and Vice-President going after Hera who take military and political charge of the Fleet?
*Does the Admiral's offer to any over the age of 15 mean that 15 is considered legal age under colonial law?
**Could this also mean a now "adult" Boxey will take part in the mission?
* With Hotdog being one of the volunteers, and especially being aware that he may not return alive, who will take care of Nicholas?
*With [[Laura_Roslin|President Roslin]] and [[Lee Adama]] going on the mission, who will lead the Fleet?

== Official Statements ==

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==
:"No one should be feel obligated to join this mission in any way. This is a decision I have made for myself. If it turns out that there are not enough personnel to crew [[Galactica|''Galactica'']], I will lead a Raptor assault with anyone who is willing to join me. Let there be no illusions, this is likely to be a one-way trip! So don't volunteer out or sentiment or emotion. There is a line running down this deck. Volunteers, move to the starboard side; Everyone else, to the port. Make your choice!"

===The Chosen One===
I was thinking that "[[The Chosen One]]" referred to in this instance is [[Chief Tyrol]]. The Hybrid says "the five lights of the apocalypse rising struggling towards the light, the sins revealedonly to those who enter the temple only to the chosen one", and since Baltar was not present during the revelation of a few of the [[Final Five]] at the end of the [[Crossroads, Part II|Season 2 Finale]] when [[Tigh]], Tyrol, [[Anders]] and [[Tory Foster|Foster]] converged in the gym.

Should a page be made to describe The Chosen One, which will then be fleshed out when more is revealed? Since its never stated that the Chosen One is a Cylon, but it is implied that it is [[Baltar]] by the Hybrid's deliberate focus, it is certainly speculation that Tyrol could be The Chosen One, which would argue against his inclusion in such an article until canonized. Still, I'm unsure if a Chosen One page would be considered speculation, and I was unsure what to actually include in a The Chosen One page, this early in the revelation. -- [[User:Vorik111|Vorik111]] 18:49, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
:It's a logical and strong guess, based on Tyrol's ability to sense the temple, if I were to play with the idea. I strongly suspect it was one of Ron Moore's clues about the five, but I don't think it goes much further. (Note: Links like "Baltar" go to disambiguation pages since there are [[Baltar (TOS)|two characters]] that share that name as the wiki references both [[Original Series]] as well as [[Re-imagined Series]]. Use the full name of the character when referencing to avoid confusion, like "[[Gaius Baltar]].") --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 22:40, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
::Before we create a Chosen One page, I think it's worth noting that this is nothing more than the ramblings of a Hybrid. She/It may turn out to be right, but everytime they show a hybrid they mumble a bunch of crap that sounds important but probably isn't.

::On an unrelated question, where's the little box with the style buttons on this edit page?--[[User:RUSnooky|RUSnooky]] 23:14, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
:::Regarding the buttons: Try refreshing the page to see if they come up. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] - [http://www.sanctuarywiki.org Sanctuary Wiki — ''New''] 23:27, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
:::Correction: The mumble of a bunch of stuff, that's interesting, but probably not important ;) --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 03:31, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
::::Important or not, the fact remains the Hybrid's words about the Chosen One have been interpreted in different ways. Number Three concluded she must have been the Chosen One. Baltar thought the Hybrid meant him because she was looking right at him. Vorik111 things the Hybrid meant Tyrol (good reasoning there, BTW). We don't have a shred of evidence for any of these interpretations, and even more different interpretations could be brought up later. The only [[Chosen One]] article we can have is one about the possible candidates (some sort of mini-[[Humanoid Cylon speculation]]), which would involve some speculation, albeit not as much as HCS. Aside from all that, we know close to nothing about the Chosen One's alleged role: sins would be revealed to them, and to them only, when they enter the temple. Surely this has either already happened or will never happen, as the temple is no more. If indeed Tyrol (or Baltar for that matter) is the Chosen One, what significance will that have in Season 4? If Number Three was the Chosen One after all, does that mean anything now that the temple is gone and the Threes have been boxed? Any attempt to answer these questions is pure guesswork, with no aired events to base it on. This means an article about the Chosen One would contain no more than speculation, guesswork and fanwanking. There's nothing wrong with plausible speculation based on aired events, but since aired events relating to the Chosen One are very scarce, they won't allow for much speculation, not enough to warrant an article IMO. Maybe later, if and when we get more information. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]]([[User talk:Catrope|Talk to me]] or [[Special:Emailuser/Catrope|e-mail me]]) 11:34, 18 July 2007 (CDT)
== Dying Hybrid ==

Wait, who said she was dying? I didn't get that at all from that episode last night. They just disconnected her and they didn't know what that would do. --[[User:Tuzaa|Tuzaa]] 19:40, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
::I have to disagree. We didn't exactly see her die on screen. All we saw was the lights go out. *shrug* --[[User:Tuzaa|Tuzaa]] 05:19, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
:::Rebel Hybrid is much more accurate, thank you Tuzaa. We saw her deactivate in the episode, which was the point of disconnecting her, not necessarily die, and a Hybrid is visible in the promo for Guess What's Coming to Dinner. -- [[User:Noneofyourbusiness|Noneofyourbusiness]] 16:05, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
"The denial of the one true path, played out on a world not their own, will end soon enough" - Isn't the First hybrid speaking about the New Caprica settlement? I'd think it should be mentioned as a commentary, or simply made a [[New Caprica|hyperlink]]. {{unsigned|Tartaros}}

:Welcome Tartaros! Anyway, to answer your question, we don't know if they're talking about New Caprica.
== She says a lot of stuff... ==

...especially in [[The Hub]]. Personally I think we should explicitly restrict this article now to just the important stuff, as documenting everything is a little tedious. [[User:OTW|OTW]] 22:02, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
:Yeah, that occurred to me too. Either important stuff or things that are worded in an interesting way. -- [[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 22:07, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
::That's mostly what I've been adding, but of course you can never tell what's going to turn out to be important. Would recommend pull the technical interludes into a side-page. After all, Baltar said, "I think everything she says is important" or somesuch. --[[User:Bradtem|Bradtem]] 02:37, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Waffle Iron: Fixed a couple of typos I made

[[Hybrid]]s, the central computer of a [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] [[Basestar (RDM)|baseship]], appear to constantly '''utter incoherent phrases and thoughts''', punctuated by what seem to be computer or system observations, results, or instructions of the basestar's operation.<ref>The behavior of speaking with little pause in an incoherent fashion is a condition known as [[w:Logorrhoea|logorrhoea]], and is generally considered a type of illness in humans. This differs from [[w:glossolalia|glossolalia]]: constant nonsensical speech, and [[w:xenoglossy|xenoglossy]]: speaking in a language not ordinarily known by the speaker. Glossolalia is also known as "speaking in tongues." While the Hybrid speaks the same common language as the humanoid Cylons and Colonials, the content of her speech contacts religious and prophetic messages related to the series storylines as classic glossolalia is claimed to exhibit.</ref> Despite their seemly nonsensical nature, they sometimes seem to relate to the wider world around them, perhaps with a prophetic nature. [[Number Two]]s believe that the Hybrid's words have religious significance.

[[Gaius Baltar]] and [[humanoid Cylon]]s are present when one Hybrid is speaking:

* Two protons expelled at each coupling site creates the mode of force, the embryo becomes a fish that we don't enter until a plate, we're here to experience evolve the little toe, atrophy, don't ask me how I'll be dead in a thousand light years, thank you, thank you. Genesis turns to its source, reduction occurs stepwise though the essence is all one. End of line. FTL system check, diagnostic functions within parameters repeats the harlequin the agony exquisite, the colors run the path of ashes, neuronal network run fifty-two percent of heat exchanger cross-collateralized with hyper-dimensional matrix, upper senses, repair ordered relay to zero zero zero zero. ([[Torn]])
* Mists of dreams drip along the nascent echo and love no more. End of line.
* The five lights of the apocalypse rising struggling towards the light, the sins revealed only to those who enter the temple only to the chosen one. (Staring at Baltar:) The chosen one. The chosen one. The chosen one. The chosen one.
* One degree angle nominal. Seascape portrait of the woman child cavern of the soul. Under pressure-heat ratio ides of evolutions have buried their fears.
* Gestalt therapy and escape clauses.
* Throughout history the nexus between man and machine has spun some of the most dramatic, compelling and entertaining fiction.<ref>This "[[w:Fourth wall|fourth wall]]" dialogue references the drama of man/machine conflicts in science fiction as seen in the ''Battlestar'' series' themselves as well as movies and novels such ''[[w:The Terminator|The Terminator]]'', ''[[w:I, Robot|I, Robot]]'' and ''[[w:The Matrix|The Matrix]]''.</ref>
* (Grasping Baltar) Intelligence. A mind that burns like a fire.
* Find the hand that lies in the shadow of the light. In the eye of the husband of the eye of the cow. ([[The Passage]]) <ref>These two lines are quoted in the music for "[[Rapture]]" as [[Music of Battlestar Galactica (RDM)#Temple of Five theme|theme for the Temple of Five]] and sung in Latin.</ref>

At least one Hybrid has spoken utterances that suggest a knowledge of the 'activation' of the [[Final Five]]:
* The excited state decays by vibrational relaxation into the first excited singlet state. Yes, yes and merrily we go. Reduce atmospheric nitrogen by 0.03%. It is not much consolation that society will pick up the bits, leaving us at eight modern where punishment, rather than interdiction, is paramount. Please, cut the fuse. They will not harm their own. End of line. Limiting diffusions to two dimensions increases the number of evolutionary jumps within the species. Rise and measure [[The Temple of Five|the temple of the five]]. Transformation is the goal. They will not harm their own. [[Data-font]] synchronization complete. ([[Six of One]])

===Rebel Hybrid===
[[Kara Thrace]] travels to the rebel basestar to hear their Hybrid, whom [[Leoben]] believes will guide her on her quest for earth. She finds little sense in its ramblings:
*Then shall the maidens rejoice at the dance.
*They'll start going ripe on us pretty soon.
*Centrifugal force reacts to the rotating frame of reference.
*The obstinate toy soldier becomes pliant.
*The city devours the land, the people devour the city...
*Intruders swarm like flame, like the whirlwind; Hopes soaring to slaughter all their best against our hulls.
*All these things at once and many more, not because it wishes harm, because it likes violent vibrations to change constantly.
*But you are a spark of God's fire.
*The children of the one reborn shall find their own country.
*Compartmentalize integrity conflicts with the obligation to provide access.
*No ceremonies are necessary.
*Contact is inevitable, leading to information bleed.
*Assume the relaxation length of photons in the sample atmosphere is constant.
Just as the Hybrid is being disconnected from its basestar she delivers one final, and unusually coherent, message to Thrace:
*Thus will it come to pass. A dying leader will know the truth of the [[Opera House]]. The missing [[Number Three|Three]] will give you the [[Final Five|Five]] who come from the home of the [[Earth (RDM)|Thirteenth]]. You are the harbinger of death, Kara Thrace. You will lead them all to their end. End of Line. ([[Faith]])
When President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] is informed of this message she goes to speak with the Hybrid ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]). She has little success talking to the Hybrid and does not get the answers she was expecting:
*Filters, Filters, the sublime elevation of the lifter and the filters
*The wing beat of the dove drown out the heartbeat of those who follow the [[Number Six|sixes]] back in the stream.
*The [[Natalie|Six]] who went among the maker is no longer.
*Back in the stream that feeds the ocean that feeds the stream.
*Such a format will close the door.
*Protect the [[Hera Agathon|child]].
*To remove the pump with the attached hose and wiring, simultaneously release the three tangs while pulling the pump out of the retainer along with the line and wiring. ([[The Hub]])

== First Hybrid ==

The [[first Hybrid]] also says several prophetic phrases, although this Hybrid's behavior displays far more coherence, grammatically. The First Hybrid also shows self-awareness, speaking in complete sentences when addressing [[Kendra Shaw]] ([[Razor]]).

*At last, they’ve come for me. I feel their lives, their destinies spilling out before me. The denial of the one true path, played out on a world not their own, will end soon enough. Soon there will be [[Final Five|four, glorious in awakening]], struggling with the knowledge of their true selves. The pain of revelation bringing new clarity and in the midst of confusion, he will find her. Enemies brought together by impossible longing. Enemies now joined as one. The way forward at once unthinkable, yet inevitable. And the fifth, still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering. I can see them all. [[Humanoid Cylon#Significant Seven|The seven]], [[Number Three|now]] [[Boxing|six]]<ref>At the time of this utterance, [[Number Three]] has not yet been [[Boxing|boxed]]</ref>, self-described machines who believe themselves without sin. But in time, it is sin that will consume them. They will know enmity, bitterness, the wrenching agony of one splintering into many. And then, they will join the promised land, gathered on the wings of an angel. Not an end, but a beginning.
*[[Kara Thrace]] will lead the human race to its end. She is the herald of the apocalypse, the harbinger of death. They must not follow her.
*As my own existence comes to a close, only to begin anew, in ways uncertain.
*All this has happened before, and it will happen again...again...again...again...again...again...again...

==Summary==
The 2003 [[Miniseries]] debut of '''''Battlestar Galactica''''' was a "[[Wikipedia:Reboot (continuity)|re-imagining]]," or updated version of the [[Original Series]] made [[Naturalistic science fiction|more suitable]] to the modern sensibilities of the 21st Century. Aiming to tackle issues of civil rights, survival, terrorism, and religion, ''Battlestar Galactica'' is an drama following the survivors of a race of humanity—which number under 50,000. The new ''Battlestar'' was spearheaded by former ''Star Trek'' director and writer [[Ron D. Moore]] and co-produced by [[David Eick]].

A familiar but different [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' finds herself leading a refugee [[The Fleet (RDM)|fleet]] away from the destroyed [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies of Kobol]] and on a (and [[Home, Part II|initially fictitious]]) quest for [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], with turmoil from within and danger from without.

''Battlestar Galactica'' began as a four-hour miniseries pilot on the [[Sci Fi Channel]] in late 2003. As with the Original Series, the show begins with the destruction of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], but in a style more familiar and disturbing to today's viewers, making its events eerily reminiscent of feelings felt by many viewers to the sporadic and inconsistent news and chaos shown during the [[w:September 11, 2001|September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks]] in the United States.

While the design of the battlestar ''Galactica'' was probably the most familiar element derived from the Original Series, many elements of the new show were altered. The commander, [[William Adama]], is a battle-hardened, secularly-minded commander on the eve of retirement for himself and his [[Cylon War|combat-decorated]] old battlestar. The names of Original Series characters are now the pilot call signs for his son, [[Lee Adama|Lee "Apollo" Adama]] and the crack pilot, [[Kara Thrace|Kara "Starbuck" Thrace]]. Starbuck's change into a female character initially became a torrid issue to Original Series fans who feared this and other changes would render an inferior series.

However, some fans became pleasantly surprised of the quality of the miniseries and the regular series. Unlike its Original Series counterpart, the new series has not only survived to prepare for a [[Season 4|fourth and final season]] in 2008, but has received many awards and nominations, including several Emmy nominations, a Peabody Award, a Saturn Award, and a Hugo Award. Its popularity has even given the show its own spin-off series, [[Caprica (series)|currently in development]]. In addition, the series has been sold to many other countries across the world.

== Series development ==

After the miniseries, the regular series itself was not immediately approved due to financial considerations. Initially, Universal Studios and Sci Fi Channel both deemed that the series was unaffordable, despite [[David Eick]]'s and David Kissinger's attempts to secure funding for the series. Fortuitously, the UK network [[Sky One]] was looking to fund "high-profile American shows", "ultimately making up the difference between what Universal felt it could afford and what we needed to make the show", according to Eick.<ref name="pg 41">{{cite_book|last=Bassom|first=David|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|coauthors=|year=2005|title=[[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]]|pages=41|editor=ed. Adam "Adama" Newell|publisher=Titan Books|location=|id=ISBN 1-84576-0972}}</ref>

Once funding was secured, the official announcement for the series' launch was given on 10 February 2004.<ref name="pg 41"/> Moore, a majority of the production staff, as well as every principal cast member from the miniseries returned to work on the series. Moore also hired the show's writing staff, including [[Toni Graphia]], [[David Weddle]], [[Bradley Thompson]], and [[Carla Robinson]]. <ref>{{cite_book|last=Bassom|first=David|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|coauthors=|year=2005|title=[[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]]|pages=41-43|editor=ed. Adam "Adama" Newell|publisher=Titan Books|location=|id=ISBN 1-84576-0972}}</ref>

Principal shooting on the [[Season 1 (2004-05)|first season]] was from 19 April to 15 September 2004, with each episode taking eight days to shoot. In an interesting twist, the series was first broadcast on a European network, Sky One, between 18 October 2004 to 24 January 2005.<ref>{{cite_book|last=Bassom|first=David|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|coauthors=|year=2005|title=[[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]]|pages=43|editor=ed. Adam "Adama" Newell|publisher=Titan Books|location=|id=ISBN 1-84576-0972}}</ref> As part of the funding agreement, Sky One was given the opportunity to play the new series first, leaving Americans to wait several months before the series would debut in the Americas.

== Noted changes from the [[Original Series]] ==
The basic story is still present: robotic [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] conduct a [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|surprise attack on the Colonies]], thus forcing several stranded spaceships to coalesce around the last surviving [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]], ''[[Galactica]]'', to seek a mythical [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)|Thirteenth Tribe]] where the survivors hope to find shelter from the Cylons.

Many of the fine details changed from the Original Series.

* The Cylons were created by humanity itself instead of being an [[Cylons (TOS)|separate alien race]].<ref>This shift in antagonists mirror similar dystopian man/machine stories found in such popular films as the ''[[Wikipedia:The Terminator|Terminator]]'' and ''[[Wikipedia:The Matrix|The Matrix]]'' movie series.</ref>
* ''Galactica'' is a 50 year old relic on the verge of decommission.
* The names of "Apollo", "Boomer", and "Starbuck" are changed to call signs. Most characters have standard first and last names; some first names were not given until later in the series, such as [[Felix Gaeta|Felix Gaeta's]] or [[Anastasia Dualla|Anastasia Dualla's]].
* The futuristic (and often confusing) terminology used to denote units of measurement, such as distance and time, in the Original Series has been replaced with understandable terminology, such as "year" and not "[[yahren]]".
* The ship designs, save for some revisions to the [[Viper Mark II]] and ''[[Galactica]]'' and a few noteworthy background ships (such as the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' and the [[Botanical Cruiser]]), have been redone.
* The government of the Colonies resembles the United States' democratic republic, with a president, vice president, and secretaries. The [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]] appears later, revised as a senatorial body, in the episode "[[Colonial Day]]".
* Instead of the other-worldly, Egyptian-esque clothing and city designs (i.e. pyramids) seen in the Original Series, objects are more contemporary in design and function. Indeed, many aspects of contemporary society are very common throughout the new series.
* The [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies (RDM)|religion]] for the Colonials revises the Lords of Kobol to be analogous in name to much of [[w:Greek mythology|the gods in real-world Greek mythology]], making the Colonial religion of the Re-imagined Series truly polytheistic (the Original Series' religion was more monotheistic as [[God (RDM)|God]] is referenced in tandem with their Lords of Kobol, who were more characterized as [[w:saint|saints]].)
* The Cylons themselves [[Cylon Religion|celebrate a monotheistic religion]] with a deity similar to the God of the [[w:Abrahamic religion|Abrahamic religions]]. The Cylons and Colonials consider each other's religions to be false, reflecting the current Islam/Christianity/Judaism strife between the Western world and the Middle East.

Characters are altered significantly from the Original Series.

* [[Boomer (TOS)|Boomer]], played by [[Herb Jefferson Jr.]], is now the callsign of a female, Lieutenant [[Sharon Valerii]] ([[Grace Park]]).
* [[Starbuck (TOS)|Starbuck]], played as a male character by [[Dirk Benedict]], is now the call-sign of a female lieutenant named [[Kara Thrace]] ([[Katee Sackhoff]]).
* "Adama", "Tigh", and "Baltar" are now surnames.
* The character of [[Adama (TOS)|Adama]], portrayed by [[Lorne Greene]] in the Original Series, becomes [[William Adama|William "Husker" Adama]] ([[Edward James Olmos]]). Adama's beliefs are far more secular than his Original Series counterpart.
* [[Apollo (TOS)|Apollo]], portrayed by [[Original Series]] star and [[Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming|Original Series continuation activist]] [[Richard Hatch]], is the call sign of [[Lee Adama]] ([[Jamie Bamber]]).
* [[Baltar (TOS)|Baltar]], who was willingly complicit in the destruction of the Colonies due to his thirst for power, became [[Gaius Baltar]], an arrogant scientific genius that is tricked into working with the Cylons.
* Colonel [[Tigh (TOS)|Tigh]], portrayed by [[Terry Carter]], is now separated from [[Ellen Tigh|his wife]] and seeing out the rest of his [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|long military career]] as an alcoholic in the form of Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] ([[Michael Hogan]]).

The show has taken a more realistic turn, scientifically. [[Science in the Re-imagined Series|Realistic science]], which was absent in the Original Series, is applied in this series as best as cinematic and storyline requirements permit.

Certain models of Cylons [[Humanoid Cylon|appear human, right down to the blood]], which generates some very disturbing problems in distinguishing friend from foe. This mirrors terrorist methods of infiltration and delivering destructive results to heavy population centers (akin to suicide bombers).

== Official Statements ==

* ''[[Ron D. Moore]] discusses using the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]] as a template:''

: I approached the original show and looked at what worked and what didn't work. I tried to keep as much of the original show as possible. I kept all the essential elements of ''Battlestar Galactica'': the aircraft-carrier-in-space; the rag-tag fleet; the Cylon attack, the escape and the search for Earth; Commander Adama; Adama's son "Apollo", who's the ''Galactica'''s lead fighter pilot; the rogue pilot, "Starbuck"; their friend, "Boomer"; and Baltar, the traitor. Those were the main things I knew I had to keep – it wouldn't have been ''Battlestar Galactica'' without them.
: I changed the things I knew didn't work. The original [[Baltar (TOS)|Baltar]] didn't have a motivation for betraying his race<ref>Moore's statement is subjective. Some readers may feel that Baltar's motivations were power-based. By deliberately making a deal with the Cylons, he believed that the Cylons would spare his colony and subjugate the human species under him ([[Saga of a Star World]]).</ref>, so I knew I'd have to change that character. I also never understood why the Cylons were so intent on pursuing these humans across the galaxy<ref>For detail on the Original Series Cylons and their motivations, see [[Cylons (TOS)]].</ref>, so I changed the background of the Cylons and their relationship with the human beings. Making the Cylons the creation of humanity enabled the Cylons to have a much more complicated love/hate relationship with humans, and also provided us with a way to use humanoid Cylons in the series, which was something we knew we wanted to do because there would be limits on how much we could use CGI Cylons.
: [[Athena (TOS)|Athena]] didn't seem to serve any function in the original show other than look beautiful and be a love interest for Starbuck, so I just got rid of that character.<ref>The series would transfer the daughter-figure aspects of the Original Series Athena to [[Kara Thrace]] and [[Sharon Agathon]], who [[Torn|later]] receives the callsign of "Athena."</ref> And while I thought [[Boxey (TOS)|Boxey]] was part of the family and decided it would be nice to [[Boxey (RDM)|include him in some peripheral way]],<ref>The character of Boxey in the Re-imagined Series was intended to be part of a family unit with [[Galen Tyrol]] and [[Sharon Valerii]], but a place for the character within story arcs were eventually dropped, and the character has essentially been dropped from the series.</ref> I never considered keeping [[Muffit|Boxey's dog]] for a second. The dog was just absurd! it was right out from the moment I took the show.<ref>{{cite_book|last=Bassom|first=David|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|coauthors=|year=2005|title=[[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]]|pages=13-14|editor=ed. Adam "Adama" Newell|publisher=Titan Books|location=|id=ISBN 1-84576-0972}}</ref>

* ''Moore discusses the religious aspects of the series:''
: The religious aspects of the show developed naturally out of my intention to reflect every aspect of the human experience. I was delighted because I'm fascinated with this notion of monotheism versus polytheism, and I felt its addition to the show enriched it and helped make it unique.<ref>{{cite_book|last=Bassom|first=David|authorlink=|authorlinkurl=|coauthors=|year=2005|title=[[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]]|pages=18-19|editor=ed. Adam "Adama" Newell|publisher=Titan Books|location=|id=ISBN 1-84576-0972}}</ref>

* ''Moore discusses using the series as allegory to current events:''

: The original "[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: The Original Series|[Star] Trek]]" series ... dealt with a lot of hot-button issues at the time: It dealt with racism, and it dealt with war, and it dealt with a lot of ideas that were very, very timely and very important. And this was a chance to make a science fiction show that wasn't purely escapist, but actually dealt with the world that we live in.<ref>{{cite_web|url=http://www.thestreet.com/_tsclsii/funds/goodlife/10276628.html|title=Delve Into 'Battlestar Galactica'|date=5 April 2006|accessdate=9 Feburary 2007|last=Wolverton|first=Troy|format=|language=}}</ref>

* ''[[Jamie Bamber]] talks about the discussions that the cast and crew have regarding the show's content:''

: We discuss everything. We even do try to discuss the sci-fi techie stuff, but we're just not very good at it. When [[A Day in the Life|the script]] throws out something like [[Cally Tyrol|Callie]] [''sic''] and [[Galen Tyrol|the Chief]] in space without any protection, lots [of us discuss] around the set if that was really possible. In the end, we all bow down to the experts who tell us it is. That shuts us up very quick. The political stuff, that's the juice of the show with the cast. That's pretty much what we like to inhabit, those social-political dilemmas and what they mean morally and legally, and how they pertain to the world that we're in now. The interesting thing about this show is that a lot of people come up to me and say, "Is it really liberal, or something?" but everyone across the political spectrum can find a view that they can side with. We don't cast moral judgment on any of them. It is all shades of gray that are out there to be interpreted, and that's the beauty of the writing, I think.<ref name="TV Guide">{{cite_web|url=http://www.tvguide.com/News-Views/Interviews-Features/Article/default.aspx?posting=%7BAC4FC1D4-115F-457C-8E4A-01A539D77D39%7D|title=''Galactica'''s Jamie Bamber Visits a Heavenly ''Ghost''|date=23 February 2007|accessdate=23 February 2007|last=Cohn|first=Angel|format=|language=}}</ref>

* ''Bamber discusses being sympathetic to the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]]:''
: The Cylons do garner your empathy gradually, as you see more and more from their point of view. That's a bold move. There is a lot about them that should be sympathetic to a Western American audience. They are monotheists, they kind of believe in redemption and rebirth and all these things that a lot of us believe in. The humans are polytheists and are a bit more anachronistic.<ref name="TV Guide"/>

* ''[[Edward James Olmos]] discusses what the series is to him, referencing [[Sharon Agathon]]'s birth of [[Hera Agathon|Hera]]:''
: No, I think it was [<nowiki></nowiki>[[Sharon Agathon]]'s] [[Hera Agathon|baby]] that really pushed her to the point of being more human than android. The love of a child is really the premise of this story. [[William Adama|My [character's]]] love of my children, [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]]'s love of humanity — all of us are her children. I have my son [Major [[Lee Adama|Lee ''Apollo'' Adama]]], and of course I just [[Maelstrom|lost]] my [surrogate] daughter [Captain [[Kara Thrace|Kara ''Starbuck'' Thrace]]], which was brutal. <ref name="ew ejo">{{cite_web|url=http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20036782_20037403_20015932_2,00.html|title=Four-ward, Cylons: EDWARD JAMES OLMOS|date=|accessdate=31 May 2007|last=|first=|format=|language=}}</ref>

* ''Moore discusses mapping out the series:''
: Each season, we mapped out where we wanted to go by the end of that season. That’s how I like to approach things. At the beginning of [[Season 1 (2004-05)|season one]], we talked about where the end of the first year would be. And then, into the [[Season 2 (2005-06)|second year]], we broke it up into groups of the first 10 and the second 10, and kept that style of planning, all through the show. I would say, somewhere mid-way through the second season, I started thinking seriously about what the end of the series itself might be. Ideas for where we were headed and what it all meant started to coalesce over the course of the third season. In season three, we started talking in earnest about, “Well, okay, if we do end it next year, what would it really be?,” and it just felt like, “Yeah, this is the right time to do it.” In terms of whether we’ve had enough time, I feel like we have. We’re really taking our cues from the story itself, and it just feels like the story has moved forward aggressively. What I’m proud of about the series is that it’s been unafraid to take risks and it’s been unafraid to move strongly forward, instead of trying to tread water. It just feels like the momentum of the series is now moving towards a conclusion. <ref name="crave">{{cite_web|url=http://www.craveonline.com/filmtv/articles/04648062/battlestar_galactica_ronald_moore_talks_about_earth.html|title=Battlestar Galactica: Ronald Moore talks about Earth|date=13 June 2007|accessdate=15 June 2007|last=Topel|first=Fred|format=|language=}}</ref>
== Overview ==

:''The cancer-stricken President [[Laura Roslin|Laura Roslin]] and hotheaded pilot [[Kara Thrace|Kara Thrace]] both must make difficult leaps of faith in order to accept an uneasy alliance with the Cylons.''

== Summary ==

=== Teaser ===

*Angry and defiant at [[Karl Agathon|Karl Agathon]]'s refusal to [[The Road Less Traveled|obey orders]] to travel to a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]], [[Kara Thrace|Kara Thrace]] attempts to jump the ship herself when [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]] restrains her.
*Agathon orders [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] to jump the ship back to ''Galactica''. [[Samuel Anders|Samuel Anders]] points out that they will be returning as mutineers, but Agathon responds that Admiral Adama will sort things out.
*Anders intervenes with a sidearm, shooting Gaeta in the leg to stop him from following Agathon's order to jump back to the Fleet. Chaos ensues as Marines arrive.
*Everyone stands down as Gaeta is attended to, in severe pain from a leg wound.
*Realizing that taking the ''[[Demetrius|Demetrius]]'' itself to the baseship would be too great a risk, Thrace rescinds her original order, suggesting to fly their only [[Raptor|Raptor]] to the baseship with Athena and Anders as crew, taking [[Leoben Conoy|Leoben Conoy]] with them. Agathon initially objects but realizes it's the best compromise. He tells her that she has only 15 hours to complete her mission before the ''Demetrius'' must jump to rendezvous with the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] or be left behind.

=== Act 1 ===

*[[Tory Foster|Tory Foster]] is packing things up on ''[[Colonial One|Colonial One]]''. [[Laura Roslin|Laura Roslin]] is at her desk, bald and not wearing her wig. She tells Foster to keep things going as she finishes the last two [[Diloxin|diloxin]] treatments, where she'll be on ''[[Galactica|Galactica]]'' and indisposed during that time. Roslin tries to encourage Foster to watch out for sudden moves by the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]].
*On day 58 of their mission, the crew prepares the Raptor. Athena promises to work with Thrace as does [[Jean Barolay|Jean Barolay]], who appreciates Thrace's strong reputation.
*The Raptor jumps and finds a massive graveyard of dead baseships and [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] floating dead in space. Thrace is amazed. They are by a large gas giant in a trinary star system, just as her visions suggested.
*On the ''Demetrius'', Gaeta is heavily medicated with [[Morpha|morpha]] for the pain. He asks Agathon not to have Dr. [[Cottle|Cottle]] amputate his leg, as he realizes that the longer he doesn't get advanced care, the more likely [[:w:gangrene|gangrene]] will set in.
*The Raptor carefully searches for the baseship amidst the exploding ordnance. Thrace can hear "music" (Leoben confirms this is a rare trait among some Cylons as well) and takes control to fly the Raptor towards the gas giant. She sees the comet she expected, but not in the form; Leoben's stricken baseship is flying past, trailing gas that gives it a comet-like appearance.
*When approaching the baseship, the Raptor is hit by a piece of debris hurtled at them from an explosion and impacting the cockpit canopy.

=== Act 2 ===

[[Image:408 showdown.jpg|thumb|Natalie attempts to defuse the situation...]]

*Thrace awakens to find the Raptor safely landed within the baseship interior.

*Athena arrives to find herself surrounded by an army of other [[Number Eight|Number Eights]], who recognize her independence from all things Cylon. They ask her to help mutiny against the [[Number Six|Sixes]], whom they feel have been making a series of mistakes. Athena rejects them, telling them to find their own individuality and help her or get out of her way.
*In sickbay, amidst [[Gaius Baltar|Gaius Baltar]]'s voice on [[Wireless|wireless]] discussing his [[God (RDM)|God]], Roslin encounters a woman in [[Sickbay|sickbay]], [[Emily Kowalski|Emily Kowalski]], who is gravely ill with cancer as well. When Roslin tries to turn off the wireless and Baltar, the woman becomes very upset and yells for Roslin to leave.
*Thrace's meeting with the surviving leaders of the baseship does not go well, but Leoben succeeds in convincing [[Natalie|Natalie]] that they must work together.
*Athena accesses the [[Datastream|datastream]] to determine how to mate the Raptor's jump drive to the baseship. Doing so requires disconnecting the Hybrid. As the group preps, Anders slowly reaches down to touch the [[Data-font|data-font]] but pulls his hand back when Thrace calls his name.
*A Six sees [[Jean Barolay|Jean Barolay]] and recognizes her as the human who killed her on [[New Caprica|New Caprica]]. When Barolay doesn't show any remorse and says she would do the same again, the Six attacks her and smashes her head into the Raptor's hull, which kills Barolay. Anders pounces on the Six and is ready to kill the Cylon when Thrace manages to talk him down.
*The Six that killed Barolay speaks to Natalie, obviously dealing with psychological trauma from the death on New Caprica that she had not been able to shake. After kissing the distraught Six, Natalie grabs Anders's hand and pulls the trigger on his gun, killing the Six permanently as there is no [[Resurrection Ship|Resurrection Ship]] nearby, carrying out a form of justice for the Colonials, who are shocked.
*Roslin meets again with Emily Kowalski, who gives her a scarf, a present. The two make small talk of what they will do after they get well. She warns Roslin that her sickness will get worse and to be prepared.

=== Act 3 ===

*Thrace arrives in the Hybrid's chamber, who seems to ignore her, discussing ship functions but repeating one phrase in particular.[[Image:408 unplugging the hybrid.jpg|thumb|Agathon unplugs the Hybrid after it delivers its prophecy to Thrace.]]

*In sickbay, Emily Kowalski tells Roslin why she listens to Baltar. After speaking to Cottle, she tells of a dream where she saw people standing on the opposite side of a river: dead loved ones. She felt a presence, a warm loving presence that calmed her. Roslin questions the dream but Emily notes that the dream is real.

*Thrace and Natalie continue to listen to the [[Hybrid utterances|Hybrid's utterances]]. Leoben instructs Thrace to listen carefully, not to hurry the construct.

*Athena is ready to activate the jump augmentations and disconnect the Hybrid. Irritated at getting nowhere with the Hybrid, Thrace orders the jump.
*When it is unplugged, the Hybrid makes an inhuman scream, which causes a guarding [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurion]] (still in [[Telencephalic inhibitor|sentient mode]]) to fire in defense, severely wounding an Eight before the group manages to take the Centurion down.

*The Hybrid gives Thrace a coherent message as the Eight's blood mixes with the fluid in her tank: The dying leader will discover the truth about the [[Opera House|Opera House]], the missing Three will be used to find the Five, who come from the home of the [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)|Thirteenth Tribe]], and that she, Thrace, is the harbinger of death that will take all to their end. Thrace is horrified at the message. The Hybrid then deactivates.

*Kowalski and Roslin continue to discuss the authenticity of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Lords of Kobol]] and Baltar's God. Roslin becomes upset when she talks of her mother's death from cancer and the striking lack of anything noble or calming at that moment. As Kowalski tries to comfort her, the woman suddenly has a violent seizure of pain. Cottle arrives with medication, but tells Roslin that there's not much they can do for Kowalski now.

=== Act 4 ===

*As the group waits, the dying Eight speaks to Athena, who reaches out for her, but hesitates when she wants to touch her hand. Anders steps in to tenderly comfort the Cylon as she dies, astonished at how similar she is to a human.

*The group deciphers the Hybrid's message. All come to the conclusion that the final five Cylons came from the Thirteenth Tribe and so must also know the way to Earth. The boxed [[Number Three|Number Threes]] will lead them to the Final Five. Anders is unnerved by the conversation, likely fearing the exposure of his Cylon identity. The group leave to meet the ''Demetrius'', with Anders leaving last, still puzzled that he is drawn to help the Eight.

*Kowalski's vision of a river comes to pass in a dream Roslin experiences. The two stand on a boat, looking at a shore where human figures begin to appear, smiling and waving at Kowalski. Kowalski disappears to meet them, materializing on the shore. Roslin feels joy, then sees her own mother, smiling and waiting for Roslin to join her. She tells her she is not yet ready, stepping away from the boat's side, as the dream ends.

*Awakening from her dream, Roslin goes to see Kowalski but finds her bed empty. She died some time while she slept. Only her wireless receiver remains, still switched on.

*''Demetrius'' is prepping to leave as seconds count down but Agathon lets the clock run over in hesitation and to the crew's apprehension. Seconds before he is about to order the jump, the baseship arrives and broadcasts Colonial ID. Wireless contact is established with Athena, who reports that the baseship has been secured, much to Agathon's relief, and both ships prepare to join ''Galactica'' and the fleet.

*On ''Galactica'', Roslin meets with [[William Adama|William Adama]] in his quarters. She tells him that something may be truthful in Baltar's words, but Adama is reluctant. A sorrowful Adama talks of Thrace's death and return, [[Lee Adama|his son's]] [[Crossroads, Part I|resignation from the military]], and laments all the crew he sent with Thrace, wondering if he will see them again. But Roslin comforts him. The two smile as Adama tells her that Roslin helped him to believe that they really will find Earth.

== Notes ==

[[Image:Roslin's mother.jpg|thumb|Roslin's mother.]]

*Baltar's wireless broadcast contains a number of phrases from the "To be or not to be" soliloquy of [[:w:Hamlet|Hamlet]], including "shuffle off this mortal coil," and "the undiscover'd country, from whose bourn no traveler returns." These phrases refer to death and the afterlife, respectively. The full text of the soliloquy can be found [http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Tragedy_of_Hamlet%2C_Prince_of_Denmark/Act_3 here].
*Meanwhile, the Hybrid's repeated speech borrows text from the Biblical book of Jeremiah, chapter 31, verses 13 to 17.
*The comet/drifting baseship bears a visual resemblance to the [[Ship of Lights|Ship of Lights]] from the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]], both in the painting and reality.
*This episode marks the third time Laura Roslin discusses her family in any detail, and the first time viewers see an image of [[Roslin's mother|Roslin's mother]]. (The first mention, also involving her mother's fight with cancer, was in "[[Act of Contrition|Act of Contrition]]" in Season 1.)

== Analysis ==

=== General ===

*Some of the writers' misdirection from "[[He That Believeth in Me|He That Believeth in Me]]" becomes clear. The "giant gas planet with rings", assumed to be [[:w:Jupiter|Jupiter]] or [[:w:Saturn|Saturn]], is revealed to be at the site of the [[Cylon Civil War|Cylon battle]]. Moreover, the comet is a damaged and drifting basestar. This also explains how Conoy was able to help Thrace paint the scene in the previous episode, since he had already witnessed it himself.
*A close-up of Kara Thrace in the Hybrid's chamber evokes the [[Eye of Jupiter|Eye of Jupiter]], with Thrace's blue eye at the center, ringed by her bloodied eyebrow and blonde hair.
*With its inhibitor removed, the Centurion in the Hybrid's chamber seems visibly more aware of its environment. It turns its head to gaze at each member of the group as they enter, and again at Thrace as she questions the Hybrid. This contrasts with what was seen previously, when Centurions on guard duty simply stand immobile unless they perceive a threat, or are given a direct order.
*[[Jean Barolay|Barolay]]'s sudden death after the Six attacks her indicates that the Six's blows and delivered concussions caused internal bleeding into Barolay's brain.
*Another aspect of Cylon culture is alluded to in regards to the importance of touch, especially amongst with how Cylons interact amongst their own specific models. For example, before Natalie executes the Six who murdered Barolay, they kiss each other. When the Eight who was shot by the Centurion is dying, she asks for Athena's forgiveness in her attempt to lead a mutiny, and stretches out her hand to touch Athena's. However, Athena refuses, and Anders steps in to provide that sense of touch before she dies. This interaction amongst the models within their own model number may be a reflection of being "with each other", especially in times of certain death. Something like this was seen earlier in "[[A Measure of Salvation|A Measure of Salvation]]", where the dying Cylons aboard the stricken basestar link hands in prayer.

=== Religion ===

*Even though Baltar is preaching for the "one true [[God (RDM)|God]]", the symbolism of a boat crossing a river to the land of the dead is very similar to the Greek legends involving the [[:w:Styx|River Styx]]. It can be expected that Baltar borrows some of his teachings from an established religion that people are familiar with. This also parallels the rise of Christianity, which adopted things from other religions, including some rites of the established Roman polytheistic religions.
*Emily Kowalski's description of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies (RDM)#The Lords of Kobol|Lords of Kobol]] and their behavior is quite consistent with that of Greek mythology.
*When speaking of her mother's death, Laura Roslin mentions the [[:w:Elysium|Fields of Elysium]], a portion of the Greek underworld where heroic or virtuous souls end up after death that bears a resemblance to heaven in Christianity. It appears that the Colonials view of the afterlife is almost identical to that of the ancient Greeks.
*Roslin believes that the Lords of Kobol are not to be taken seriously but are metaphors. Roslin's mother took them more literally. This mirrors real life in which some people take the Jewish [[:w:Torah|Torah]] ([[:w:Old_Testament|Old Testament]]), the Christian Bible ([[:w:New_Testament|New Testament]]) and the Islamic [[:w:Koran|Koran]] as literal word for word truth and an accurate record of events, while others believe the stories are metaphors to be used as guidelines in life, but not hard pronouncements or actual history.
*The [[Hybrid utterances|hybrid utterance]] "All these things at once and many more, not because it wishes harm, because it likes violent vibrations to change constantly." appears to be a paraphrase of a line from the [[:w:Theosophy|theosophical]] text "[[:w:At_the_Feet_of_the_Master|At the Feet of the Master]]"

=== Characters ===

*The Eights' attempt to recruit Athena to lead a mutiny against the Sixes and presumably the Twos reveal an apparent character flaw that is prevalent amongst this particular model. Their ties to allegiances, loyalty to a cause are not as strong as their fellow Cylon models, should those ties and beliefs cause suffering or death.
**This is also a somewhat ironic twist, as Athena and others aboard the ''Demetrius'' were encouraging Karl Agathon to initiate their own mutiny against Thrace just hours earlier. However, Athena is likely referring to her allegiance to the Colonials as a whole, which has not diminished.
*While the Sixes and the Twos are willing to initiate the search for the Final Five because of their specific strong religious beliefs, the Eights apparently join them not because of a desire in unraveling the mystery, so much as because it grants them the opportunity to say "no" to their programming.
*Though the word "faith" is never explicitly spoken throughout the episode, multiple allusions to the idea of trust are provided through the characters' interactions with each other. This is especially evident in the multiple times the phrase "...with you" appears in the dialog. When the Eight that is shot by the Centurion is dying, Anders holds her arm and tells her that he is with her. When Roslin and Adama speak with each other, Roslin tells Adama, after he pours out his feelings of uncertainty and doubt, she tells him that she is with him.
*Athena also shows deep conflict within herself in this episode in regards to her nature as a Cylon as seen in multiple scenes. Conoy's words to her about how their trip is a "home coming" for Athena causes an immediate response. Later, when the Eights touch her and attempt to recruit her, she expresses disgust with them, but possibly including herself. Her declaration of choosing a side and sticking to it may be something she needs to hear more than they do. When Anders takes out his gun to execute the Six, it is Athena who also takes out her gun to defend the "human" and refers to herself as a human. Finally, her refusal to hold the dying Eight's hand shows a reluctance of being seen as a Cylon and that she is not with them.

== Questions ==

*Are the Centurions capable of getting an IFF signal from a humanoid Cylon, like a Raider does? Could one have exposed Anders if he had made direct eye contact?
*What does the Hybrid's statement that the five come from the home of the thirteenth mean?
**Were they made on Earth, the home of the thirteenth tribe? Or did they voyage to Earth from Cylon/Colonial space and then return?
**Does "the thirteenth" refer to "[[The One Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken|The One Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken]]" mentioned in "[[The Eye of Jupiter|The Eye of Jupiter]]", to whom the [[Temple of Five|Temple of Five]] was dedicated?
*Will Thrace tell anyone about the Hybrid calling her "the harbinger of death"? Does anyone else hear the Hybrid's words to her?
*Will Helo and the others have to answer for their mutiny?
*How will Gaeta's injury affect his duties? Will his leg be amputated? ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?|Answer]])
*What would have happened if Anders had put his hand in the [[Data-font|data-font]]?
*Why should the Cylons have any trouble figuring out the Raptor's FTL system? They have previously used Raptors ([[Torn|Torn]]).
*Why are the Raiders' FTL systems unsuitable?
*How will the Fleet respond when the ''Demetrius'' returns with the shipwrecked basestar in tow? ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?|Answer]])
*Without Natalie's help, would Anders have been able to pull the trigger to execute the Six?
*Does the revelation that the Final Five are from Earth and can lead the fleet to it encourage the hidden Four to reveal themselves?
*How will the Cylon rebels unbox the Threes? ([[The Hub|Answer]])
*Is Natalie's baseship the last place where there are Sixs, Twos, and Eights?
*Why did the Cavils' forces leave one baseship largely intact?
*Will Barolay's death, despite the execution of the Six, affect the truce amongst the Colonials once they discover that two from the ''Demetrius'' mission are dead?
*Is Conoy the only Two left amongst the Cylon rebels? ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?|Answer]])
*Why is Athena chosen to speak to the ''Demetrius'', given that another Eight could easily impersonate her?
*Are the baseship's crew all that remain of the Cylon rebels, or are there other survivors elsewhere?

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''An [[Eight|Eight]] discussing mutiny with [[Sharon Agathon|Sharon Agathon]]:''

:'''Sharon Agathon:''' You guys make me sick.
:'''Eight:''' Why?
:'''Agathon:''' Because you pick your side and you stick. You don't cut and run when things get ugly. Otherwise you'll never have anything. No love. No family. No life to call your own.

*''[[Emily Kowalski|Emily Kowalski]] and [[Laura Roslin|Laura Roslin]] discuss the [[Lords of Kobol|Lords of Kobol]]:''

:'''Emily Kowalski:''' Oh, Laura. And the [[Lords of Kobol (RDM)|Lords of Kobol]] are real? Reigning from a metaphysical mountaintop in those silly outfits? [[Zeus|Zeus]]? Handing out fates out of an urn like they were lottery tickets? 'You're gonna work on a [[Tylium|tylium]] ship. You're gonna be an admiral. Your family's gonna be evaporated in [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|an attack]] on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Colonies]] but you'll survive for three more years on a moldy compartment on a freighter 'til your body starts to eat itself up alive.' Those are the gods that you worship? Capricious, vindictive...
:'''Laura Roslin:''' But they're not meant to be taken literally. They're metaphors, Emily.
:'''Kowalski:''' I don't need metaphors. I need answers.

*''Laura Roslin on her mother's death:''

:"You're like my mother. She wasn't satisfied with metaphors either. She was convinced that [[Aphrodite|Aphrodite]] herself was gonna swoop her away when she died. And she believed it even when the [[Diloxin|diloxin]] and the radiation failed to stop her cancer. She was a teacher! She was... oh, she was something to behold. And the head of a classroom. And her students— Her students loved her. They'd walk through fire for her and then they see this woman who seemed so eternal. She withered away and I find myself having to change her diaper because she couldn't even— At the moment she died there was no gleaming fields of Elysium stretched out before her. There was this dark, black abyss. And she was terrified. She was so scared."

===Rebel Hybrid===
([[Faith]])
When President [[Laura Roslin]] is informed of this message she goes to speak with the Hybrid. ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]). She has little success talking to the Hybrid and does not get the answers she was expecting:
* Filters, Filters, the sublime elevation of the lifter and the filters
*The wing beat of the dove drown out the heartbeat of those who follow the [[Number Six|sixes]] back in the stream.
*The [[Natalie|Six]] who went among the maker is no longer.
*Back in the stream that feeds the ocean that feeds the stream.
*Such a format will close the door.
*Protect the [[Hera Agathon|child]].
*To remove the pump with the attached hose and wiring simultaneously pull the three tangs while pulling the pump out go the retainer along with the line and wiring. ([[The Hub]])

== First Hybrid ==
