Reading the comments, I noticed that the Viper&#039;s increased fuel consumption is attributed to the fact the moon where Starbuck lands has an O2-free atmosphere, but I&#039;m sure that isn&#039;t right.&lt;br /&gt;

Unless I&#039;m mistaken, the reason they go through so much JP is because in space, the Viper just stays where it is.  The only time a Viper in space burns fuel is to accelerate, brake or change direction.  In an atmosphere, the Viper has to burn fuel *just to stay up*.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Which brings us on to the parallel question of how they fly in a low/no-O2 atmosphere.  Either tyllium isn&#039;t a combustion fuel, or smallcraft have internal LOX tanks for this sort of thing.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
