'''The Fleet''' is the convoy of ships that contain what is effectively the last survivors of humanity after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon Attack]]. The Fleet forms the backdrop of the drama of [[Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|the re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'' series]].

Unofficially, many viewers refer to the Fleet as the "RTF"; "Rag Tag Fleet", or more fully, "RTFF." These nicknames come from the term "Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet," a name used in the opening credits voiceover (performed by [[Lorne Greene]]) describing the [[The Fleet (TOS)|civilian refugee fleet]] from the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|Original Series]].

==Overview==
"The Fleet" begins as a convoy of about sixty stranded commercial and civilian ships around the area of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], located and brought together by [[Raptor]] pilot [[Sharon Valerii]] at the behest of new president [[Laura Roslin]] in the immediate aftermath of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon Attack]] ([[Miniseries]]). Of these ships, only a handful were Colonial military craft, such as [[Raptor 478]] and three [[Viper (RDM)|Viper Mark VII]] fighters. One [[ECO]], [[Crashdown]], is called a "refugee from [[Triton (RDM)|Triton]]," suggesting that he escaped that battlestar's destruction with Roslin's convoy.

Twenty ships of the convoy are abandoned to an imminent Cylon attack because they lacked [[FTL]] drives. The remainder of the Fleet joins with battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', the only [[Pegasus (RDM)|known]] surviving warship in the first months after the events of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. The Fleet represents the last vestige of humanity. The political and social troubles of the Fleet as it wanders through space function as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally ''is'' what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as a substitute for the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term ''President of the [[Twelve Colonies]].'' This may be interpreted as either an expression of hope that eventually the people on board the ships of the Fleet will reestablish themselves on a new colony permanently, or a psychological inability to confront that the Fleet may be the only home that humanity knows for a very long time.

[[Saul Tigh]]'s assertion in "[[The Farm]]" that the twenty four ships which departed with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] during her insurrection represented "almost a third of the fleet" imply that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's.

==Demographics==
A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "[[33]]", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there were 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] left the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 were Gemenons and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the fleet was 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica had more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron had in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.
*Before the destruction of the ''Olympic Carrier'', Sagittaron natives made up 10.50% of the fleet. Solely for the purpose of argument, we assume that the ''Olympic Carrier'''s population breakdown was identical to the rest of the fleet's and that Sagittaron continues to make up 10.50% of the Fleet's total population.

The likeliest scenario is therefore probably somewhere in between Assumptions 1 and 2, with nearly all of the Gemenon population (drawn by the "religion card") and a large portion of the Caprican population leaving with Roslin.
*Alternatively, it is in fact possible that the populations of the colonies were grossly unequal. Though the structure of the [[Quorum of Twelve]] appears to maintain at least a fiction that the colonies were roughly equal, we know next to nothing about how the governmental system of the colonies was established or evolved over time. Indeed, the United States Senate, for example, by design expressly assumes that the various states constituting it are 'equal' even though this is clearly not the case in terms of their respective populations. Furthermore, the fact that a system of government is 'poor' or else not representatively proportional does not mean it cannot actually be implemented and even survive for long periods of time.

As for population distribution, we know the population of ''Galactica'' (2,693 as of "[[Water]]"), the ''Olympic Carrier'' (1,345 as of "[[33]]") and ''Astral Queen'' (1,500 as of "[[Bastille Day]]", [[List of retcons (RDM)|retconned]] up from 500 in the Miniseries). There are 176 civilians in the cargo hold of [[Colonial One]] in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]". The Fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", retconned up from 40 in the Miniseries.
*Going by the 75 ship count, the remaining ships besides ''Galactica'' and the ''Astral Queen'' each carry about 600 persons on average.
*The 23 ships that left with the [[Laura Roslin faction]], apart from the ''Astral Queen'', would have an average population of about 720 persons per ship.

==Notes==
* In the [[Miniseries]], astute viewers may recognize three spacecraft with notable resemblances of ships from other SF universes. The first two of these ships aren't considered a [[Canon|canonical]] part of the series or the Fleet, but their appearance adds a bit of humor and pays homage to other notable science fiction and their creative staff.

* ''Serenity'', the central ship from the TV series "[[Wikipedia:Firefly (TV series)|Firefly]]" and the motion picture, "[[Wikipedia:Serenity (film)|Serenity]]", [[:md:Image:SerenityBSGMini.JPG|appears briefly in the sky]] outside the window of a doctor's office where viewers first see [[Laura Roslin]]. The ship does not appear in the Fleet.

* The original USS [[Wikipedia:USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)|''Enterprise'' (NCC-1701)]] from the original ''[[Wikipedia:Star Trek: The Original Series|Star Trek]]'' TV series makes a cameo in the [[:md:Image:Enterprise in fleet.jpg|last shot of the Fleet]] as [[Elosha]] chants a prayer in the memorial service near the end of the Miniseries. Look to the upper right corner for the ship in a still frame. All season 1 opening credits use this shot, so ''Enterprise'' makes a very quick appearance with each of the first 13 episodes (This is best viewed from the [[Season 1 DVD]] set).

*The ill-fated [[Botanical Cruiser]] in the sublight caravan in the [[miniseries]] was added in homage to the [[Agro Ship]] from the [[Battlestar Galactica (TOS)|original ''Battlestar Galactica'']] TV series, which in turn were the re-used models from the SF film ''[[Wikipedia:Silent Running|Silent Running]]'', a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru [[John Dykstra]] worked on a few years prior to the Original Series. }}'''Billy Keikeya''' is a young, fairly good-looking member of [[Laura Roslin]]'s staff. At school, he was a member of the debate team. Possibly an intern, given his relative youth, he is nevertheless gifted and capable - and much more insightful than people might otherwise assume.

==Biography==
As a result of his abilities, [[Laura Roslin]] selects Keikeya to accompany her to the decommissioning ceremonies for [[battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]''. During this time, he recognises that not only is [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] ill, she is in fact suffering from cancer ([[Miniseries]]).

His parents had moved to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Picon|Picon]] two months prior to the Cylon attack to be with Keikeya's sisters and their families. It is assumed they died there. Keikeya mentions he had a brother that also died on Picon ([[Sacrifice]]).

Following the loss of President [[Richard Adar|Richard Adar's]] cabinet, Roslin is sworn-in as President, and Keikeya finds himself promoted to the position senior aide to the President. One of his first tasks is to work with her to tally the number of survivors in the fleet ([[33]]) and establish records for the dead. Later, he engages in attempts to get the 1,500 prisoners aboard the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' to help [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] obtain water supplies ([[Bastille Day]]), after ''[[Galactica]]'s'' water supplies are sabotaged ([[Water]]). Despite his dubious mathematical aptitude (as shown in "[[33]]"), Keikeya is an exceptionally organized individual, who also acts as the senior spokesperson for Roslin's administration ([[Litmus]]).

Keikeya believes that Zarek was a prisoner of conscience who saw his fellow Sagittarians being mistreated by the other [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Colonies]] ([[33]]).

As Roslin continues the [[Chamalla|unconventional treatment]] of her cancer, Keikeya's concerns increase. When she passes out due to an overdose of Chamalla, he unknowingly makes a call for help on an open channel. The call is intercepted by the often irksome [[Colonial Press]].

Later, he questions Roslin's hallucinations and her actions during her search for the [[Arrow of Apollo]]. He believes that her actions would irreparably damage the Colonial [[Government]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). Still, Keikeya stands by her side as Roslin and her [[Presidential Security Service|personal security]] agents prepare to thwart [[William Adama|Commander Adama]]'s attempt to arrest her ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).

Roslin is arrested when she subverts the separation of military and civilian government by convincing [[Kara Thrace]] to purloin the captured [[Cylon Raider]] for a [[FTL|Jump]] back to Caprica. Other government aides and officers such as Keikeya, [[Gaius Baltar]] and the members of the [[Quorum of Twelve]] are still free to do as they wished within the Fleet. Keikeya rarely leaves Roslin's side during her internment in ''Galactica'''s brig and routinely keeps her briefed on the deteriorating situation within [[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] in the wake of the attempt on Commander [[William Adama|Adama]]'s life by a Cylon infiltrator.

When [[Lee Adama]] formulates a plan to break the President out of the brig and fly her to safety on ''[[Cloud 9]]'', Keikeya is supportive of the effort, but ultimately does not follow her down the path she was about to take. The two part company in ''Galactica'''s hangar bay with Keikeya staying behind and Roslin hiding on other ships in the Fleet before Col. Tigh and Commander Adama can recapture her ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

''In his Podcast for "[[Home, Part II]]", [[Ronald D. Moore|RDM]] indicated that Keikeya was an atheist, and that his reticence was motivated by a distaste for the cloak of prophecy Roslin had assumed.''

''Galactica'' prepares for a return to Kobol to find President Roslin, who go there with over a third of the Fleet in search of the [[Tomb of Athena]]. Commander Adama brings Keikeya along with him and his insertion team because he feels that, aside from himself and Lee Adama, Keikeya is the only other person that Roslin will listen to. When Keikeya humbly denies the assumption that Roslin placed any stock in his opinions, Adama stuns him by saying Roslin feels that he would become President himself some day. Adama tells him that Roslin said he reminded her of former President [[Richard Adar|Adar]] on his first campaign for public office. Keikeya had no idea how to respond to Adama's lofty comparison when Adama says, "Don't let it go to your head...Adar was a moron."

On the surface of Kobol, Keikeya reunites with Roslin. She is overjoyed to see him once again. Keikeya is also one of the few people to enter the Tomb of Athena and see the map to Earth ([[Home, Part II]]).

Keikeya later proposes to Dualla, giving her his high school debate ring. However, she rejects his proposal. Later, Keikeya witnesses Dualla on a date with [[Lee Adama]] on ''Cloud 9''. As Keikeya begins to criticize Dualla, the bar is taken hostage by a group of civilians demanding the transfer of [[Sharon Valerii]] into their custody. During a rescue attempt by ''Galactica'' marines, the terrorist [[Vinson]] attempts to shoot Dualla. Keikeya knocks one terrorist aside and shoots Dualla's would-be murderer in the chest. Unfortunately, Vinson gets off a burst as he falls, killing Keikeya. President Roslin tends to Keikeya's body in ''Galactica's'' morgue ([[Sacrifice]]).

[[Giana]], a woman rescued from [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] by [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], speaks with a Puerto Rican accent, and inquires after the whereabouts of her husband, who she states is "stationed on Gemenon". Her place of origin is unclear, but no other characters from either Caprica, [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Gemenon|Gemenon]], or anywhere else have shared this accent. The actress, Lymari Nadal, is from Puerto Rico ([[Miniseries]]).

===Kiwi Accent===
The reporter [[D'anna Biers]] speaks with a Kiwi/New Zealand accent (this is actually the accent that actress [[Lucy Lawless]] speaks with when off screen, because she is from New Zealand). However, the same episode revealed that D'anna is actually a [[Humanoid Cylon|Cylon]], and another copy of D'anna on Cylon-occupied Caprica does ''not'' speak with this accent, but a Standard American one, perhaps to differentiate the two characters. Originally the character was named "Paul Tigh", but when it was discovered that this could not be used for legal reasons, it was shifted to "''S''aul Tigh", a reverse of the name switch that Saul of Tarsus/St. Paul made.
* [[Galen Tyrol]]: "[[w:Galen|Galen]]" was a famous Greek healer, the source of much Medieval medical knowledge, and was the first to argue that the mind was in the brain and not the heart; this could be construed as ironic, given that Tyrol followed his heart and maintained a relationship with Boomer even when he shouldn't have. "[[w:Tyrol|Tyrol]]" is a region that spans the border of Austria and Italy.
* [[Sharon Valerii]]: "Sharon" is a name of a georaphic area in the center of Israel, although it's also a common English woman's name. The [[w:Valerius|gens Valeria]] is one of the longest-running families in the history of the [[w:Roman Empire|Roman Empire]]. Curiously, "valerii" is the masculine plural form.
* [[Tom Zarek]]: "[[w:Thomas|Thomas]]" is a deliberate biblical reference, after the doubting apostle, although strictly speaking that apostle's name was Jude the Twin, "Tau'ma" being Aramaic for "twin". It's also a common English name. Zarek is a Polish name derived from the Babylonian name Balshazzar meaning "Baal protects the king." According to the writers, they just made up the name "Zarek" because they thought it sounded "spacey".

Uncertain references:
* [[Leoben Conoy]]: "[[w:Leoben|Leoben]]" is an Austrian town where a preliminary peace in the Napoleonic wars was signed. "[[w:Conoy|Conoy]]" is a Native American tribe, also known as the Piscataway. Both are pretty obscure.
* [[Billy Keikeya]]: "Keikeya" appears to be made up.
* [[Laura Roslin]]: "[[w:Roslin Institute|Roslin Institute]]" is where Dolly the Sheep was cloned. A more likely source of the name would be the Scottish village of [[wikipedia:Roslin, Midlothian|Roslin, Midlothian]], where the Roslin Institute is located.

==Accents==

Most characters speak with a [[Wikipedia:General American|Standard American]] accent, with some exceptions.

===English Accent===
Two characters speak with the [[Wikipedia:Received Pronunciation|Received Pronunciation]], Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] of Caprica and ship's medic [[Layne Ishay]]. Other characters from Caprica do not share this accent.

===Canadian Accent===
Occassionally when Col. [[Saul Tigh]] is shouting or barking out orders, he exhibits a faint Canadian accent. [[Michael Hogan]] is a noted Canadian actor, and on the show his speech is usually indistinguishable from Standard American English, but observant fans can occassionally detect a trace of an accent.

===Spanish Accent===
[[Giana]], a woman rescued from [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] by [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], spoke with a Spanish accent, and inquired after the whereabouts of her husband, who she stated was "stationed on Gemenon". Her place of origin is unclear, but no other characters from either Caprica, [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Gemenon|Gemenon]], or anywhere else have shared this accent. The actress, Lymari Nadal, is from Puerto Rico.

===Kiwi Accent===
The reporter [[D'anna Biers]] speaks with a Kiwi/New Zealand accent (this is actually the accent that actress [[Lucy Lawless]] speaks with when off screen, because she is from New Zealand). However, the same episode revealed that D'anna is actually a [[Humanoid Cylon]], and another copy of D'anna on Cylon-occupied Caprica does ''not'' speak with this accent, but a Standard American one, perhaps to differentiate the two characters. Subsequent appearances in [[Downloaded]] and the third season have featured the Kiwi accent exclusively.

===Aerelon Accent===
In the episode "[[Flesh and Bone]]", Baltar noted that Sharon Valerii spoke with a trace of an [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Aerelon|Aerelon]] accent. This accent appears to be entirely fictional - the Canadian actress who portrays her, Grace Park, is fluent in both English and Korean, but speaks Standard American English without a foreign accent.

==Liturgy==
During the funeral service at the end of the Mini-series, Priest [[Elosha]] chants a prayer in a foreign language. It is recognizable as a common Sanskrit prayer, found in Part I, Chapter III, Verse 28 of the [http://sanatan.intnet.mu/upanishads/brihadaranyaka.htm Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad].

I'm Tsahi. I've been following BSG in the last year or so, watching all the episodes through means I better [http://www.riaa.com/default.asp not elaborate] here. I probably watched at least part of the original series, but it's such a distant memory i don't remember much of it now.
