:This article involves the survivor count of the refugees in the Re-imagined Series. For a count of losses and gains in the Fleet incurred during the Original Series, see: Fleet population.

The number of surviving Colonial citizens and military in the fleet was provided at intervals throughout the first season on a whiteboard on Colonial One, and in one instance spoken aloud in dialogue. In the second season, this number appears in the opening credits of every episode (sometimes jokingly referred to as the "Countdown to Extinction"), and displays limited omniscience, updating itself to reflect the deaths on Kobol early in that season. This page collects the figures available thus far, cross-referenced with date information from Timeline (RDM).
Season 1
Day 6
*33
**50,298 - initial estimate.
**49,998 - after revising count downward by 300.
**49,317 - after second revision downward (cut scene, DVD)
**47,972 - after destruction of the Olympic Carrier.
**47,973 - one birth on the Rising Star.

Day 10
*Water
**47,958

Day 15
*You Can't Go Home Again
**47,958 - has not been updated to reflect the deaths of 13 pilots in "Act of Contrition"

Day 25
*Flesh and Bone
**47,954 - after deaths of a marine and three crew in "Litmus", discovery of Ellen Tigh one week prior to "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", and the disappearance of Shelly Godfrey in "Six Degrees of Separation". Aaron Doral (Scorpia Traveler copy) was apparently not included among the fleet's population. The events of "Act of Contrition" have (still) not been accounted for.

Day 28
*Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down
**47,905 - given by Dr. Gaius Baltar, possibly excluding himself and Sharon Valerii. Unusually large reduction for a 3-day period.

Day 48
*Colonial Day
**47,898 - immediately after Valance's death. Includes four viper pilots killed in "The Hand of God".

Day 50
*Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I
**47,897

Day 51
*Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II
**47,887 - ten-person crew of Raptor 3.
*Scattered
**47,875 - "Boomer" Valerii was probably removed after her assassination attempt. Probably includes the death of Karma in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I", since the on-screen total appears to include deaths on Kobol.

Season 2
*Valley of Darkness
**47,874 - Tarn
*Fragged
**47,862 - Flyboy, Socinus, others in Cylon boarding action.

Day 54 (est.)
*Resistance
**47,861 - Crashdown

Day 60 (est.)
*The Farm
** 47,857 - Four civilians aboard the Gideon.

Dates Unknown
*Home, Part I
** 47,858 - Return of Helo, who was presumed dead. Caprica Valerii is not included in the count.
*Home, Part II
** 47,855 - Death of Elosha and a faction redshirt.
*Final Cut
** 47,853 - Death of Meier and unnamed Tom Zarek henchman in "Home, Part II".

Day 86 (est.)
*Flight of the Phoenix
** 47,853 - No change since "Final Cut".

Dates Unknown
*Pegasus
**49,605 - After the return of the battlestar Pegasus, a dramatic increase of 1,752 over the previous count. The change is shown in the opening credits of Pegasus, since the ship appeared in the "teaser" before the opening credits.
*Resurrection Ship, Part I
**49,604 - Death of Alastair Thorne.
*Resurrection Ship, Part II
**49,604 - No change since "Resurrection Ship, Part I".

Day 189
*Epiphanies
** 49,598 - Deaths of Admiral Helena Cain and an unnamed marine guard on Pegasus. The remaining casualty count of four is conspicuously low given the scope of the battle depicted in the previous episode.

Dates Unknown
*Black Market
**49,597 - The death of a suicide bomber on the Daru Mozu. Based on dialogue, the attack took the lives of the bomber and at least two civilians. This may have been offset by births in between the two episodes. The death of Jack Fisk was shown in the teaser of Black Market, and should be counted in the opening credits.
*Scar
**49,593 - Deaths of Commander Jack Fisk, Fisk's assassin, Phelan, and one other person, presumably Beano. It is unclear where the death of Beano, the first of four pilots killed by Scar is counted. Since much of the episode, including the deaths of the four pilots killed by Scar, is shown in flashback.

*Sacrifice
**49,590 - Deaths of three pilots killed by Scar: Reilly, Brent "BB" Baxton, and Joseph "Jo-Jo" Clark.

c. Day 210
*The Captain's Hand
**49,584 - Deaths of Sesha Abinell, Vinson, Page, Chu, and two unnamed marines, and Billy Keikeya. Sesha Abinell's husband Ray was killed during a Cylon attack ten weeks prior to this episode, but it does not appear to have been counted. It may have been offset by a birth.

c. Day 240
*The Captain's Hand
**49,579 - Deaths of Buster, Shark, the two-man crew of Raptor 314, and Commander Barry Garner (seen near the end on the white board).

Between c. Day 240 and c. Day 270
*Razor ( Present events)
**49,579 - confirms closing count from "The Captain's Hand".

c. Day 270
*Downloaded
**49,579 - confirms closing count from "The Captain's Hand". The count is either not updated to reflect the deaths of Kendra Shaw and Dasilva in "Razor" or there were births that offset those deaths.
*Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I
**49,579 - No change since "Downloaded". It is unclear how the birth of Hera is counted. Her birth appears to be offset by the death of Maya's child. Maya's child seems to be the one seen in the incubator, and whose ashes are spread out of a Raptor by Helo and Tyrol.
c. Day 280
*Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II
**49,550 - Raptor 612 jumped into a mountain on Caprica. This could account for four people: A pilot, an ECO, and two marines.

During the Settlement of New Caprica (from c. Day 280 to c. Day 660)
*Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II
**After the "One Year Later" time jump later in the episode, the population of New Caprica City is given as 39,192. This includes separated military personnel, but does not include military and civilians in the small fleet orbiting the planet.
*Precipice
**According to Lee Adama, about 2,000 civilians escaped with the ships in orbit of New Caprica.
**Adama also states that both Galactica and Pegasus are at half strength (this can't be taken literally).
***A careful crew tally establishes that, at full strength, Galactica is crewed by about 2,808 people and Pegasus by about 2,445.
***The same tally indicates that immediately prior to the one-year jump, Galactica was crewed by about 2,600 people, and Pegasus by about 1,700. At half-strength, this puts the minimum number of military personnel at about 2,200.
**This puts our estimate of the total human population at roughly 43,400 (39,192 + 2000 + 2200)
**Subtracting from the figure of 49,550 given in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II", this means that the total population fell by about 6150 people during the one-year gap. The majority of these deaths probably happened as a result of the destruction of Cloud Nine and the surrounding vessels.
:For a confirmation of these estimates with more accurate numbers see the "Crossroads, Part I" section

Season 3
During the Occupation of New Caprica (from c. Day 660 to c. Day 798)
*An unknown number of people died in the insurgency and Cylon retaliation. However this must be offset by additional births during this four month time span. Accurately tracking the population numbers is impossible at this point, but known casualty figures are given below:
*c. Day 729
**Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance - 10 people are killed at the temple, including Nora.
*c. Day 794
**Occupation - Tucker Clellan bombs the New Caprica Police graduation ceremony, killing 33 humans.
*c. Day 796
**Precipice - suicide bombing at the power substation kills 4 humans. Three resistance fighters die in the ambush at Breeders Canyon.
*c. Day 798
**Exodus, Part II - numerous casualties during the evacuation of New Caprica, including Maya.

c. Day 800
*Collaborators
**41,435 - Fleet population as of the third day of the Second Exodus. Given the above numbers, the death toll of the resistance and the Battle of New Caprica is about 2000 people. Given the total in the next episode, this figure does not reflect the 13 collaborators executed by the Circle between this episode and the last.
**Several hundred children might have been born on New Caprica. Since they are also included in the count, the Fleet has lost more older and able-bodied people than apparent.

c. Day 830
*Torn
**41,422 - Figure now reflects the 13 collaborators executed by the Circle. No deaths occur in this episode.

c. Day 831
*A Measure of Salvation
**41,420 - Two unseen deaths.

c. Day 935
*Hero
**41,421 - Daniel "Bulldog" Novacek escapes from Cylon custody and joins the population of the fleet.

c. Day 950
*Unfinished Business
**41,422 - One birth.

Dates Unknown
*The Passage
**41,420 - Two unseen deaths.

*The Eye of Jupiter
**41,402 - Eighteen deaths from radiation exposure, including the skeleton crews of the Adriatic and the Carina. This also includes Louanne Katraine.

*Rapture
**41,401 - One unseen death.

*Taking a Break from All Your Worries
**41,403 - Deaths of Hillard and Omar Fischer. Hera Agathon, Gaius Baltar and Caprica-Six join the Fleet's population, in addition to one possible birth.

*The Woman King
**41,401 - Two unseen deaths.

*A Day in the Life
**41,398 - Deaths of Willie King and two other Sagittarons; possibly more if offset by births.

*Dirty Hands
**41,400 - Two births.

*Maelstrom
**41,400 - No net change.

*The Son Also Rises
**41,399 - Death of Kara Thrace in the prior episode, and Alan Hughes at the end of this episode's teaser. Hughes' death is either not counted, offset by a birth, or Thrace's death is not counted.

*Crossroads, Part I
**Unknown, as there is no intro for this episode.
**The following numbers are given during Baltar's trial by Cassidy: 44,035 - the number who settled on New Caprica; 38,838 - the number the day after the escape. However the number of escapees can only refer to the civilian population of the Fleet, and despite talking specifically about the people who settled on New Caprica, this number includes the total population, including those in orbit.
**This contradictory wording is a writing error, but interpreting them slightly differently confirms the estimates from "Precipice":
***41,435 (Collaborators) - 38,838 = 2,597 (the military personnel in the Fleet)
***44,035 - 39,192 (the inhabitants of New Caprica City) = 4,835 (the total population left in orbit)
***4,835 - 2,597 = 2,238 (in "Precipice" Lee Adama refers to roughly 2,000 civilians who escaped New Caprica)
***49,550 (count in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II") - 39,192 - 4,835 = 5,523 (the death toll prior to the occupation, mostly incurred with the destruction of Cloud Nine)
***49,550 - 5,523 - 41,435 = 2,592 (the causalities of the Cylon occupation and the escape from New Caprica)
:Note: While this number of military personnel fits with the estimate about their strength during the settlement of New Caprica, it still does not fit with the depiction of overcrowding on Galactica after the escape from the planet and the destruction of Pegasus, since the battlestar was crewed with approximately 2,600 people to begin with. The number of civilians should therefore be lower.

Season 4
*He That Believeth In Me
**39,698 - A loss of 1,701, accounting for the ca. 600 deaths on Pyxis, and ca. additional 1,100 deaths on other ships damaged during the Battle of the Ionian Nebula, such as the Space Park and Astral Queen. The assumed dead Kara Thrace returns, presumably increasing the number by one.

*Six of One
**39,676 - 22 unaccounted for deaths from the previous episode. These may be people who were wounded in the battle, but died of their injuries later.

*The Ties That Bind
**39,676 - No change. Cally Tyrol dies during the course of the episode.

*Escape Velocity
**39,675 - Cally Tyrol's death is accounted for.

*The Road Less Traveled
**39,676 - An increase of one; likely a birth in the Fleet. Sergeant Erin Mathias dies during the episode.

*Faith
**39,675 - Mathias's death is accounted for. Jean Barolay and Emily Kowalski die during the episode.

*Guess What's Coming to Dinner?
**39,673 - Barolay's and Kowalski's deaths are counted.

*Sine Qua Non
**39,674 - An unexplained increase by one. During the episode Eammon Pike is found the dead in the Raptor and several pilots were likely killed in the battle at the Resurrection Hub.

*The Hub
**39,673 - A decrease of one, possibly counting Pike's death. However, the episode takes place concurrently with "Sine Qua Non" and Pike only dies later in the episode.

*Revelations
**39,665 - A decrease of eight.

Analysis
*The detonation of a nuclear warhead on Cloud Nine by the Number Six copy, Gina, is the first time a ship has been destroyed since the destruction of the Olympic Carrier.
*The ships Adriatic and Carina are also destroyed in "The Passage", however with only skeleton crews aboard.
*Since the end of "33", the Fleet's population has been dying off at a fairly steady rate of approximately 2.1 persons per day. At this rate, the Fleet would be completely depopulated within a few decades.
*First season survivor counts are available from President Roslin's whiteboard aboard Colonial One. Second season survivor counts are included in the opening titles, as well as the presidential whiteboard.
*In "The Captain's Hand" (roughly in the region of Day 250-60), Dr. Baltar estimated that (factoring in the arrival of Pegasus), given the survivor count's current rate of decline, never increasing, the human race will simply go extinct in 18 years. If this refers only to excess mortality, it would mean an average rate of roughly 7.5 people a day. It may be that Baltar's estimate considered more factors, such as labor shortages resulting in famine, which would complicate this model, resulting in the death rate exponentially increasing over time.
*The loss of 8,115 people between "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" and "Collaborators" is the highest net loss from one opening title count to another.
Saul Tigh is the Executive Officer (XO) of Galactica, as well as frequently serving as acting commander in the absence of William Adama.

Before his service on Galactica, he served as Adama's XO on the battlestar Valkyrie. A tough but troubled man with a long history of alcoholism, Tigh has served in the Colonial Fleet since his teenage years, seeing action in both Cylon Wars. He is a widower of the deceased Ellen Tigh.

Upon reaching the Ionian nebula, he and three others became aware of their nature as Cylons. Unlike the seven known models, neither Tigh nor the other three know what to make of their apparently inhuman nature.

Biography
Background
Tigh was supposedly born on the colony of Aerelon. (He has recently been revealed as a Cylon presumably making this point moot). A veteran of the Cylon War, Tigh is sometimes estranged from his wife Ellen and has been somewhat disillusioned with his career, seeking refuge in alcoholism - a move which has led many in the crew to view him with contempt (Miniseries, "33").

Tigh began his career as a deckhand. By the second year of the first Cylon War, he was serving as a gunner's mate onboard the Brenik. His ship was boarded by the Cylons where he and others fought in hand to hand combat, during the bloodiest time of that war. It was during this battle that he saw his first dead man, Duncan Rafferty, who was violently vivisected by Centurions ("Valley of Darkness", deleted scene). His ship was subsequently destroyed and he survived. He was transferred to another unnamed ship, which succumbed to a similar fate as his original ship. Having borne witness to many a bloody combat, he became emotionally scarred, which had, among other impetuses, led him to alcoholism.

Tigh eventually achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. When Viper pilot numbers began running low in the war, Tigh was drafted into Colonial officer candidate school and was reassigned as a Viper pilot. As a pilot, he demonstrated considerable skill, earning several medals while posted aboard the battlestar Athena.

After the cessation of hostilities, he was dismissed from service and eked out an existence as a deckhand aboard a commercial freighter. Tigh clearly experienced signs of post-traumatic stress disorder; he commented that every time he smelled grease or machine oil he would nearly vomit, as this smell reminded him of the "stink" of Centurions ("Valley of Darkness", deleted scene). While on board, he drowned himself in alcohol and, after a time, about 20 years after the war, encountered William Adama, who had not seen as much combat experience as Tigh himself. They became fast friends, and remained in touch after Adama reenlisted with the service. Two years later, Tigh found himself reinstated into the Colonial Fleet at the rank of captain, thanks to his old friend, and now major, Adama.

Following the Cylon attack, Tigh recovered some of his old verve and attempted to give up alcohol. However, this, combined with the initial stress of flight from the Cylons caused him to over-compensate as a martinet, frequently driving the personnel overly-hard, and berating where encouragement would prove the better option (33). He excused this by using the truism that the XO is supposed to be the "hard face" of command.

With his drinking problem relatively under control, Tigh settled back into his role as the Galacticas Executive Officer and proved himself both honest and level-headed - if still hard on himself and others - in a number of circumstances, and he provided the kind of support Adama needed.

During Cylon attacks, Tigh has proved himself to be an excellent battle manager and tactician. His quick actions sometimes saved the ship and the Fleet from damage or destruction ("Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", "Scattered", "Valley of Darkness").

Tigh is uneasy around President Laura Roslin (Water), and resents what he sees as her interfering with Adama's command (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down) - something born out of his deep respect for Adama which even the most heated of disagreements between them (You Can't Go Home Again) cannot disrupt.

Tigh personally dislikes Kara Thrace, one of Galacticas pilots and, while grudgingly conceding she is a fine pilot, does not understand what Adama sees in her (Miniseries). Tigh sees Thrace as an egotistical, insubordinate youngster. While they have tried to bury the hatchet between them (Miniseries, "Water"), there is potentially too much water under the bridge now for them to get completely past their differences.

Outside of Adama, Tigh has few others he regards as confidants aboard ship; and since the initial Cylon attack, he has withdrawn from interacting with the crew during off-duty hours, making him perhaps more isolated than even Adama - who is at least held in awe and respect by the crew.

Wife's Return
Some three weeks after the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies, Tigh is stunned to discover his wife, Ellen, has not been killed as he had thought, but was rescued from Picon, and carried aboard the Rising Star as an unconscious "Jane Doe".

Despite the emotional implications from the destruction of the Colonies and life aboard the ship, Tigh is reluctantly thrust further into politics as his wife plays her schemes. Much to his disdain, his wife attempts to procure photo opportunities with the likes of Tom Zarek -- a person Tigh views with the utmost contempt (Colonial Day). Additionally, Ellen seems to re-establish Tigh's alcoholism with gratuitous drinking.

Despite this, Adama sends Tigh with a squadron of Marines to arrest Laura Roslin after Adama discovers that she convinced Kara Thrace to Jump back to Caprica to retrieve a historical artifact called the Arrow of Apollo from the Delphi Museum. This action deprives the Fleet of a crucial military asset -- a captured Cylon Raider, intended to have been used to plant a nuclear warhead aboard a basestar in orbit around the planet believed to be Kobol -- and convinces Adama that Roslin is abusing her authority.

Onboard Colonial One, Tigh's men and Roslin's personal security agents are at a standoff when Lee Adama aims a weapon at Tigh's head and attempts to thwart the arrest. Attempting to defuse the situation, Roslin agrees to be arrested and Lee Adama is arrested on charges of treason (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).

Tigh in Command
Tigh is present in CIC during the attempted assassination of Adama by Sharon Valerii. As guards restrain Valerii, Tigh attempts to stop the bleeding from the torso gunshot wounds Adama sustained in the attempt (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). Needing reliable officers, Tigh grants Lee Adama a parole from his arrest. After his daily duties as CAG are done, Lee promises to return to the brig when off-shift.

With Adama incapacitated and with Roslin dethroned, Tigh tries to maintain order. However, his irrational and gruff command style displeases many crew members. Morale and ship efficiency began to suffer. Ellen Tigh becomes a private adviser to her husband, frequently questioning his power to command while also suggesting ways of usurping more power and quashing his opponents. Ellen Tigh's advice only exacerbates an already-deteriorating situation.

Tigh's interrogation of suspected Cylon collaborators or infiltrators is brutal. After beating, then nearly shooting the Galactica copy of Valerii, other issues in the Fleet divert him from further interrogation. He orders a special cage made for her for later interrogation. Tigh also savagely interrogates Valerii's former lover, Chief Galen Tyrol as a possible humanoid Cylon himself. Tigh would have left him with Valerii in the newly built Cylon cage if Gaius Baltar did not intervene to prove medically that Tyrol is not a Cylon himself.

With Roslin in prison, uprisings begin as civilian ships refuse to supply Galactica until Roslin is released. Worse, the Quorum of Twelve demand to see Roslin. Knowing of Roslin's hallucinations in the brig, he intentionally invites the Quorum to see Roslin in her poor state in hopes of disillusioning the Quorum. However, Roslin recovers sufficiently from her Chamalla withdrawal after getting a supply smuggled to her by Corporal Venner, her guard. Tigh, a secular man, believes that the accounts within the Sacred Scrolls weren't to be believed, and teases Roslin in front of the Quorum on her visions. Roslin not only is able to speak to the Quorum, but decisively reinforces her decisions as well as her role in the search for the location of Earth as told in the Pythian prophesies. This act greatly impresses the dominantly religious-minded Quorum, and infuriates Tigh; fearing a larger civilian government uprising led by the Quorum. Tigh institutes martial law throughout the Fleet in an attempt to maintain order in a rapidly chaotic shuffle of power between the civilian and military governments (Fragged).

The supply situation leads Tigh to a poor decision of using Viper pilots to command Marines in forcibly retrieving supplies. On one ship, a riot leads to four deaths and many injuries due to the pilot's inexperience in managing such a situation. Unlike Adama (who likely would have taken direct responsibility for the "Gideon Massacre"), Tigh places blame solely on the pilot, absolving himself from the incident.

Fleet Factioning and Adama's Return
The shootings, Tigh's decision for martial law, and his unwillingness to discuss anything with anyone except Ellen Tigh (and the unconscious Adama) becomes the dividing point of those wanting to press on to finding Earth, and those wanting to settle on Kobol (Season 2). Tigh's drinking spirals further out of control, leading to more erratic behavior and causing great concern regarding his ability to effectively command, particularly among the CIC staff. The situation comes to a head when Roslin, tacitly aided by other officers and crew on Galactica, escapes the brig in an attempt to hide amongst the many ships in the Fleet with the aid of Tom Zarek. Tigh chases down the escaping Raptor using the CAP, having the Viper fire across the bow of the fleeing Raptor to persuade it to return. The Raptor brazenly continues onward, leading to a crucial decision for the Colonel. Tigh allows the Raptor to escape rather than shooting it down, which would have killed Adama's son and the President and could have destabilized the fleet.

Fortunately for the fleet and Colonel Tigh, Commander Adama regains consciousness shortly after the escape and asks what had happened during his absence. Tigh confesses that he has "frakked things up good," but Adama reassures his friend, saying, "I never had much use for people that second-guessed my decisions, especially if they've never held a command. They don't understand the pressure to make a call that affects the lives of thousands, and you have no one to turn to for backup."

Despite all the serious problems that Tigh created, Adama doesn't blame him, telling Tigh that whatever bad calls were made, they would pick up the pieces together (Resistance).

Both Adama (also a rather secular man) and Tigh are astounded at the number of ships that secede from the main fleet to join the faction that sought the Tomb of Athena with President Roslin (The Farm). Tigh backs up Adama while he maintains a similar official position on Roslin and the separated ships as Tigh has. However, after Adama realizes that survival of the entire Fleet would only come if everyone held together, Adama begins to prepare a journey to Kobol to retrieve the remainder of the Fleet and reach out to Roslin (Home, Part I). At first Tigh seems to believe that Adama is retrieving the faction by more military means, and scoffs at Roslin's religious views on the quest until he realizes that Adama is beginning to follow Roslin's information, taking her reports and visions seriously. Tigh is left in command while Adama successfully reunites the Fleet and reconciles with Roslin (Home, Part II).

Fallout from the Gideon Incident
After Adama's return to command and Roslin to the presidency, for a moment the Gideon incident is almost forgotten. Before she is invited to Galactica, reporter D'Anna Biers prepares a story about the incident, which could destroy the public's view towards Tigh, and eventually Galactica. However she drops the subject in favor of a Galactica documentary.

Lt. Joe Palladino, the pilot in charge of the boarding operation to Gideon, blames Tigh for the discredit to his reputation. He begins to terrorize Tigh and his wife, but Tigh later manages to subdue Palladino (Final Cut).

Pegasus Discovered
Things once again turn on their head when Galactica has a chance encounter with the battlestar Pegasus, a modern type of battlestar and the flagship of Admiral Helena Cain. Cain, being the superior officer, assumes complete command of the Fleet. The naturally suspicious Tigh is wary about this mixed blessing, but takes it in stride like everything else up until now. When he begins to regularly speak with Pegasus’s own XO Jack Fisk, his suspicions slowly prove to be well founded.

Fisk's conscience-clearing sessions with Tigh reveal that Admiral Cain was responsible for a set of atrocities, the most damning being the pillaging and stranding of a small civilian fleet in open space. When Tigh relays this information to Commander Adama, Adama reminisces about their own questionable activities, particularly their actions regarding the Olympic Carrier. However, Adama keeps Tigh's warnings in mind and they help him in his decision to stand up to Cain later on ("Pegasus" through "Resurrection Ship, Part I").

The Election and New Caprica
When the presidential election arrives, Colonel Tigh is charged with overseeing the vote tallies on Galactica. When it appears that Baltar would win the vote, Tory Foster, President Roslin's aide, approaches Tigh and Dualla to conspire to steal the election for Roslin, foreseeing certain disaster in a Baltar presidency. Tigh, never a fan of Baltar's to begin with, assists in the deception in order to keep Baltar out of office. The plot is overturned when Lt. Gaeta later notices the Colonel's suspicious and stand-offish behavior regarding the ballot boxes. Admiral Adama lets Tigh and Dualla off the hook and the official vote tallies are "revised" without the public learning of the Roslin campaign's attempt to steal the election.

One year later, after the fleet settles on New Caprica on the orders of President Baltar, most of the military staff have all but retired from active service. Col. Tigh is one of the few officers still serving aboard Galactica, but the day eventually comes when Admiral Adama discharges his friend and XO from his duties to let him return to civilian life with his wife. On the surface of New Caprica, the couple run into Kara Thrace at Galen and Cally Tyrol's union rally. The former colonel and captain share an unusually warm embrace, having put their differences behind them at some point in the preceding year. However, their reunion does not last as a large Cylon fleet appears in orbit over the planet and the Cylons occupy New Caprica without firing a shot. Tigh and his wife are last seen watching in utter shock as Cylon Centurions march through the streets of New Caprica City (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Occupation and Resistance
Two months into the occupation of New Caprica by the Cylons, Tigh is organizing and recruiting for the resistance on New Caprica along with Galen Tyrol and Jammer. When the Cylons begin to find the weapons hidden by the Resistance, Tigh orders them to be stored in the Temple, believing it to be the safest place as the Cylon respect the sanctity of the Temple and will not search it. When the Cylons discover the weapons, Nora is shot and Cally Tyrol and her baby barely escape. This leads several members of the resistance movement to question whether Tigh is going too far. After Tigh plans an attack that could endanger patients at a hospital, Jammer reports him to the Cylon authorities (Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance). The Cylons imprison Tigh and physically tear his right eye out. He is badly beaten and put into a small holding cell. Ellen's sexual efforts with Cavil lead to Tigh's eventual release (Occupation) though this is later revealed to be a Cylon ruse to blackmail Ellen into collaboration with the Cylons as well as find the location of a high level meeting of the Insurgency.

Escape from New Caprica and Ellen's death
Tigh actively participates in the exodus from New Caprica, leading an attack on the shipyard with Galen Tyrol, during which they are aided by Vipers launched from Galactica.

Following the escape, he initially resumes his post as the executive officer of Galactica, but is unable to conceal his contempt for those who colluded with the Cylons, such as Felix Gaeta. In a face-off with Admiral Adama, in which the senior officer orders Tigh to "sleep it off", it is clear that the events on New Caprica - most notably, his wife's death - are still adversely affecting Tigh. Following that he spends a lot of time in his quarters trying to cope with what happened to him on New Caprica and is temporarily replaced by Karl Agathon.

He eventually becomes the apparent ringleader of the Circle, a group of six people authorized by then-President Tom Zarek, charged with bringing collaborators to justice. Thirteen people fall victim to the Circle's mandate, including Jammer (Collaborators).

Tigh is reunited with an old comrade, Daniel Novacek and tells him the truth of his last mission. Tigh later stops him when Novacek tries to kill Adama in revenge for being the cause of him spending years as a Cylon captive (Hero). Tigh also referees the boxing fights organized to boost morale (Unfinished Business). He returns to duty during operations to resupply the Fleet's food stores (The Passage). When Dr. Robert, a civilian physician, is implicated in the deaths of Sagittaron refugees, Tigh initially defends his friend, saying that he worked with the resistance on New Caprica. He clashes with Karl Agathon over this, who insists on investigating Robert. However, when it turns out that Robert was killing the Sagittarons out prejudice, Tigh orders his arrest (The Woman King).

When Kara Thrace dies he is visibly heartbroken (Maelstrom), showing that he did truly care about her despite their differences, which he had begun to show in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II". As the Fleet nears the Ionian nebula and Gaius Baltar's trial begins, Tigh is one of a few people who hear mysterious music on several occasions. When called to testify in court, he shows up drunk. Baltar's lawyer exploits this vulnerability and forces Tigh to publicly admit that he killed his wife on New Caprica (Crossroads, Part I).

<div style="clear:both;"></div>

The Damning Revelation
Saul Tigh, Galen Tyrol, Samuel Anders and Tory Foster begin to hear a song only they can hear over and over again, driving them to distraction. They instinctively come to the realization that they are four of the final five Cylons. They decide to remain loyal to the Colonials (Crossroads, Part II).

With a Cylon fleet bearing down on them, Tigh resumes his position as executive officer again. However, almost immediately, this decision is tested by both Tigh's waking nightmares during the onset of the battle&mdash;where he believes he will kill his friend and commander, Adama, much the same way Boomer tried to&mdash;and the return of Kara Thrace, who may be a Cylon. Even amidst this, he is the de facto leader of the "Final Four" and continues to assure them that they are different than Boomer and the other Cylons. Further, he has them pledge to kill themselves should they feel any inkling of betraying the Fleet (He That Believeth In Me).

In an attempt to learn more about what it means to be a Cylon and how they deal with pain, Tigh visits Caprica-Six in the brig and asks her how it feels to have the blood of billions of beings on her hands. Six replies that she is just as human as he is and can't switch off her feelings, but that she has found another way to deal with her pain. During their conversation, Tigh has a hallucination of his dead wife, whose body he sees the place of Six. She tries to help him cope with his feelings and share some of her perceived clarity. In act of tenderness, she removes his eye patch, but Tigh rebukes her advances. Six then punches Tigh and kisses him when he lies on the floor (Escape Velocity).

When Natalie offers the Colonials access to the Cylon Resurrection Hub and wants to unbox the Threes in order to learn what she knows about the Final Five, Tigh reacts shocked and fears that he will be uncovered and killed. Instead of cooperation with the Cylon rebels, he urges President Roslin to just destroy the hub (Guess What's Coming to Dinner?).

When Doctor Cottle discovers that Caprica-Six is pregnant, Admiral Adama is angry at Tigh for "giving in to his weaknesses" and being disloyal. Tigh initially counters that Adama is risking a lot for woman he cares about as well. When Adama asks what Ellen would say about his actions, Tigh becomes furious and physically attacks Adama. The two exchange blows and Adama eventually shoves Tigh to the floor, who breaks Adama's model ship during the fall. Having vented their frustrations, both calm down. Later, Adama decides to stay back in a Raptor to wait for Roslin's return. He temporarily promotes Tigh to admiral and gives him command of the Fleet. Tigh is reluctant, recalling his previous disastrous experience in command, but takes the position (Sine Qua Non).

Tigh, along with Anders and Tyrol, discover a clue, Kara Thrace's Viper, which ultimately finds Earth. After revealing himself to be a Cylon, he is given amnesty by President Adama (Revelations).

Notes
* Tigh is supposedly a third-generation Colonial soldier. His father was a decorated fighter pilot killed in combat and his grandfather served under President Mueller. Also, Tigh was a published military historian until personal problems became apparent (Miniseries, deleted scene). However, given Tigh's recently-revealed Cylon nature, his family history may be a fabrication. Tigh's interest in military history has not been mentioned on screen after the Miniseries, although he mentions various Cylon tactics in use from the Cylon War that came to save Galactica after being boarded by Centurions (Valley of Darkness).
* Tigh's first name has been given as "Paul" on a number of websites. This is initially based on an early version of the script (PDF file), which has Adama speaking to "Paul" in their discussion of his fight with Kara Thrace. In the podcast commentary on the episode "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", Ronald D. Moore has indicated that the character's name initially was Paul Tigh. The name had to be changed due to legal issues that Moore was unable to recall in that podcast.
* Tigh is based off the character of Paul Eddington in the movie In Harm's Way portrayed by Kirk Douglas (with John Wayne).
* Tigh's age is one of the only ones which can be accurately deduced. According to a deleted scene from "Valley of Darkness", he served on the Brenik when it was boarded during the second year of the Cylon War. Tigh says that he was "just a kid. Virgin. Teenager." It is known that Colonial Day is the anniversary of both the unification of the Colonies, and (roughly) the outbreak of the Cylon War (Source: RDM, April 11, 2005), and was 52 years ago (Colonial Day). Thus, Tigh is between 63 and 69 years old at the beginning of Season 2. However, give that he is in fact a Cylon, that is in question as well.
* In the DVD commentary of "Act of Contrition", Ron Moore notes that actor Michael Hogan won the role of Tigh over Donnelly Rhodes, who was one of two other actors vying for the part. Rhodes went on to play the role of Dr. Cottle, Galacticas CMO.
* According to Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine, Tigh's home colony is Aerelon. However, in "Dirty Hands", Cally claims that virtually no officers in the Colonial Fleet are from poorer colonies. While this could be an exaggeration, her husband brings up Dualla as counter-example, but not Tigh. Moreover, Tigh doesn't speak with an Aerelon accent, although there might be local variations.
*Tigh's Cylon identity may be alluded to as early as "Occupation": not only does he have only one eye at this point, but the Cylon "scanning eye" sound effect can be faintly heard as he looks toward the open door of his cell when Cavil enters to tell him that he has been released.
Possibly a nod to B7
Since "Number Six" may be a nod to Prisoner, it may be that "Cally" is a nod to the eponymous telepath on "Blake's Seven," another tough-edged science fiction series. Below 16:26, 2 February 2006 (EST)

:No. I was unaware that Cally was a character name on Blake's 7, but Ron D. Moore stated in the DVD commentary for "Bastille Day" that he picked the names of Cally, Socinus, and Prosna from an internet "Random ancient name generator". I actually had that in my transcript of the DVD commentary. Someone saw fit to remove it. == Time for a Cally romance ==

She's been in the background for too long. I enjoyed her early development, but it's slacked off to where she just seemed bitter. Cally was a perky upbeat person with a creative streak, and the attack (as did all characters) changed her. Not that I want Cally to become the Whore of the Battlestar, but it would be fun for, say, her and Gaeta to strike a rapport (if not romantic as Gaeta can be a bigger stickler of regs, even with the need to make babies). There's plenty of enlisted; perhaps even she and the chief, Laird...others from Pegasus. I don't want her to become a lost character as Billy K had become. --Spencerian 13:41, 14 February 2006 (EST)

:Be careful what you wish for. All the people who were asking, "Where's Billy?" probably didn't like the answer they got in Sacrifice... --Steelviper 13:46, 14 February 2006 (EST)

::Spencerian, as I dutifully selected representative of the cult-following that Nicki "Cally" Clyne has amassed (me and some of the other regulars on the messageboard are obsessed with her: Solium and Nibblerfan made the fanart and run things, while I wrote up our "thesis" of why Cally is great (read it on the site); basically because I think she's the "Anti-Seven of Nine" and embodies many of the character traits postulated by Naturalistic science fiction, and in short, just like after so much Voyager and Enterprise, there was a backlash with the fans and we all left for BSG, after so much Seven of Nine and T'Pol, there was a backlash in favor of Cally. So it turned into a craze, and they kind of realized how popular she was, gave her more to do in season 2, etc.) Anyway, when you say "she's in the backround"...that's just these past few episodes. *****Watch the spoiler pics for "Lay Down Your Burdens", she's going to have ***BIG*** things happening, not to meantion, the Tyrol-Cally- Galactcia-Boomer triangle taking place. No, she does not "just seem bitter", I don't know what you're talking about. She was cool in FotP and Pegasus.
::I'm sorry, but it doesn't seem that you've been obsessing over her for as long and in depth as much as we have; Gaeta is just a random name to say; rather, we've narrowed it down to two possible relationships: 1) Chief Tyrol 2) Seelix: Cally saved her life, so it would be really logical for her to be friends with Cally. Heck, like Cally, Racetrack, Helo, etc. Seelix was supposed to be a one-shot character (without even a name) but they liked her so they brought her back for FotP.

::Further, this is totally incomparable to Billy. I already thought of Billy as an underused character by the early episodes of season 2, and I didn't really like him, while CALLY was just great!

::Cally is not underused. Dualla is more underused than Cally. I like Cally more than Dualla, she's gotten more meaningful development, I think Apollo/Dualla is the most poorly executed storyline the show has ever produced, and frankly, everyone posting on the messageboards has generally been saying "wow....Dualla is not well developed and annoying....and I wish they were talking about Cally"

::Things may have focused on other characters for the middle of Season 2.5, but I assure you Spencerian, this post is unwarranted, from the spoilers I've seen for the season finale; "all is proceeding according to PLAN!...."--The Merovingian 16:43, 14 February 2006 (EST)

:::Well, it's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Out of respect, of course, I presume you're disagreeing with my comments and not the right to post. My post is quite warranted--I want to see more Cally. Anywho...Hopefully the "big" things at season's end don't involve her shooting anyone or getting shot. Dualla is getting a bit more screen time, but seems more like a damsel, which is a shame. I would like BSG to have an episode like Babylon 5's "A View from the Gallery," where we see some day-to-day events with our lesser but pet favorite characters, like Cally, Seelix, Tyrol, Gaeta, Kat, Hot Dog, and especially Racetrack (don't know what she does to me, but she does). And what's with the lazy talk formatting of your comments? Do I have to call the Mop Boy to come clean up again...? --Spencerian 18:53, 14 February 2006 (EST)

::::Several points:
::::1) By not means; of course I wasn't attacking your right to post this etc., I'm just debating the comments, etc.
::::2)....You refer to him as "The Boy", now?
::::3)That's a better way of putting my Dualla complaints: she has little characterization on her own; first she was defined mostly by her relationship with Billy, and now she's kind of just devolving into the "prize" of Apollo. I don't like where her character is degenerating. That said, I like the actress and she is more than capable of good stuff, I just think that Dualla's handling, case in point the Apollo/Dualla Dualla is meant as a reward for him thing, was one of the few wrong this with the show; it was kind of good in theory (when RDM talked about it in the Resistance and FotP podcasts, etc.), but the way it just sprung up now was just so poorly executed. I mean, just walking up to him in "Black Market" and going "hey, so we have a relationship, right?" (shudder); Sacrifice was better, but she was mostly damsel in distress, and further, her opennign dialog with Apollo "weren't that great" ("wow, that moment was...electric", etc. and "I can't quite figure You out Apollo"), again, my whole thing just being "wow, they never had a relationship before. This came about completely randomly, and they're acting as if it was some longstanding thing. The actors make a good job of it as best they can, but I really just want them to drop this relationship in season three"., etc.
::::4)Yes, I've alwas wanted another "View from the Gallery"/"Lower Decks" episode. Oh, Flight of the Phoenix was KIND OF like that, but I'd like more of it. Racetrack is also cool too. The reason I like Racetrack and also Duck is because they're such downers and pessimistic/pragmatic, i.e. like normal people. Sort of, you notice how on Star Trek often times even in really bad situations everyone tends to still be cheerful and optimistic? Well, logically, more of the pilots and civilians and regular people should be a little distraught at their situation. None too happy or perky, like Dr. Cottle, etc. Racetrack is indeed cool. I wish we'd finally have Helo in a Raptor again, paired with Racetrack etc.; not enough Raptor team stuff lately. But my pet project, "wishlist" episode, is like, TNG had "Data's Day" so why not "Cally's Day" or "Tyrol's Day", which focus entirely on like Tyrol (in which case Cally would be a main character), etc. etc. etc.
::::5) Giving Cally armor and Katanas etc. doesn't really work. The point of why Cally is cool (the Anti-Seven of Nine) is that she's not some cliche scifi female warrior, kick-ass Lara Croft type She has to use a rifle in early season 2, she's totally inexperienced, distraught and out of her element. Shooting Galactica-Boomer did really seem in character and GREAT though, as she cares about the Chief and would hate her for hurting him. I must say, it was one of those PERFECT tv moments where you go "I had NO IDEA that was going to happen....yet it was entirely logical, and I SHOULD HAVE seen it coming"....like when Cardassia joined the Dominion in Deep Space Nine, I was totally shocked, but realized that it was so logical, I should have seen it coming but didn't. --The Merovingian 19:14, 14 February 2006 (EST)
::Given that they were building up the Cally/Tyrol relationship in Act 1, I think it's obviously implied to be his. As for "married", well he's a really religious man (a Gemenon, son of a priest, etc.) I mean, if he is having a baby with Cally, you think they wouldn't be married but our lovable morons Anders and Starbuck are?--~
::::I agree with the implication of them being married. However, that doesn't mean Cally will be taking Galen Tyrol's last name unless they say so. There are a lot of married couples nowadays that don't follow the "Western" tradition of the wife taking the husband's last name. You can't assume that the colonials all follow the same tradition. Will Starbuck be called Kara Anders? Probably for the continuouty of the show, probably not. -- Straycat0 09:41, 15 March 2006 (MST)

With confirmation that Cally is married, we face a little problem in that this article uses the character's first name throughout, instead of the last name per convention. I'm OK on it because of the limited data we had to date, but we should consider the need to conventionize this article. --Spencerian 11:17, 15 September 2006 (CDT)
: <s>Actually, the issue I have right now is which last name to use. For instance, it's never been explicitly stated that Cally took on Tyrol's last name, unless I've missed something?</s> Frak, never mind. The article now fits with our standards and conventions. Like the name popularity of Helo, I won't be put off if the convention is occasionally violated in the article, 'cause Cally is just so gosh-dern cute. ::That's an interesting question. I've been generally following the BW:OC on this, but others might have been getting ahead on this. Cally's sourcing is confirmed (see Sources:Cally Henderson Tyrol), although I don't expect to see any credits changed in the shows. Therefore, teams of pilots are covertly sent to the planet to work incognito with various members of the scientific community, hoping to quickly advance Earth's technology.

The promotional material for Galactica 1980 sets the series at twenty years after the events of the re-imagined series.
President Adama and Commander Sharon "Boomer" Anders&mdash;now second-in-command in place of Colonel Tigh&mdash;send Major Boxworth "Boxey" Troy, the adopted son of Adama's own son Lee, and Lt. Nicky Tyrol to North America. The two become entangled with TV journalist Jamie Hamilton who aids them in devising ways to help Earth's scientists and outwit the handful of Cylons that discover the planet.
Olmos (Adama), Park (Boomer), and Widdows (Troy) were the only major cast members of the re-imagined series to reprise their roles in the eleven episodes, with Katee Sackhoff reprising her role as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the second-to-last episode.
Short life
Galactica 1980 had a promising start in its ratings with a three-hour adventure that saw Troy, Tyrol and Hamilton sent back in time to the Ottoman Empire to save the future, but the series could not sustain this momentum. The series was unceremoniously canceled after only eleven episodes, many of which were story arcs, or what would be referred to now as multi-part stories.

The second-to-final episode, "The Return of the Harbinger of Death," aired on May 4th, 2010. The episode featured the return of Katee Sackhoff as Maj. Kara Thrace in a flashback episode. The episode's popularity was too late to save the series. Repeats were aired through September 17th; the series was replaced by repeats of Eureka 2.0 the following week.

Production
In the fall of 2008, Sci Fi network approached Glen A. Larson and NBC Universal to bring back the Galactica 1980 series. According to 1980 story editor Bradley Thompson, neither Larson nor NBC Universal wanted to do the series at all. Thompson claims that both parties were threatened to do the series for reasons which were not known to him, and attributes the reason that Larson agreed to do the series to "[whore for] the [money with] a ... bad [attitude]". This is also corroborated by Thompson's then-writing partner, Ronald D. Moore.

All the parties agreed that the discovery of Earth would be a suitable vehicle for drawing back viewers. However, many of the actors had moved on to other roles, most of the sets had been struck, and the time available for completing the production before the proposed January 2010 airdate was short. Actors and production personnel who worked on Galactica 1980 describe a crazy shooting schedule that involved working on multiple episodes at the same time, last minute re-writes, and working days that extended well into the night.

Thompson notes that both he and Moore were "literally blackmailed into the gig because of ostensible expertise in DS9". They (including Robert L. McCullough) were story editors for the series, and would chant "Come on, Eileen" every morning. "Eileen" was the ratings number code that, should 1980 ever hit the number associated with it, would result in the series' cancellation.

Larson wrote or rewrote the entire series' worth of episodes from either Kokomo or Cleveland. Further episode rewrites happened on the sets just prior to shooting. Additionally, there was no clearly defined purpose to the show prior to development, as the purpose of the show changed on a daily basis. Additionally, new characters were created for the series, and then subsequently dropped as though they never existed.

As a result of having crews work overtime, the budget for the series continued to creep up in cost. That, in conjunction with ratings that went from historic highs with the first episode down to a dismal showing by April, spelled the early end of the program.

Budget heck
Despite what Moore calls "revisionism" from people, such as lead actor Connor Widdows -- who claimed that they needed a way to "economize" the revamped Battlestar Galactica, ergo the revamped 1980 -- Sci Fi "knew very well that Glen [Larson] never met a budget that he didn't hate".

The series itself cost between $5.2 and 5.5 million to produce per episode; the $5.5 million number is the budget that "The Picon Panther Scouts" used. As Sci Fi only paid $6 to $7 per episode, NBC Universal was left to pay the remainder for each hour of programming.

Additionally, Moore notes that "there were almost as many writers listed on the show as actors. I mean, every day we'd be introduced to another chick who had just joined the staff as a new writer. I don't know what any of them did -- we rarely saw them again -- but they sure were collecting the bucks." He adds that this was NBC Universal's decision as they "figured [that] if they were going to eat the big green sludge anyway, they might as well take care of some obligations and dump all their losses into one (overflowing) toilet." This constant overflow of personnel to the series did nothing to alleviate the budget issues.

Ironically, the only episode that did not go over-budget was "The Return of the Harbinger of Death", and so NBC Universal did not have to pay the remainder as, by that time, they were overspent.

"Kids' Hour", the FCC, and "kids crawling out of your ears"
During its initial run, Galactica 1980 was relegated to the 7 A.M. Sunday timeslot. Its only competition was that of CBS's "morning news" show. That and about 200 other channels of watchable programming.

This timeslot was deemed by the FCC as children-friendly, and thus had restrictions as to the type of stories that could be told, or how they could be told.

The content of shows airing in this timeslot should be educational, and thus the Galacticans' lack of knowledge on Earth cultures and locations, and finding out about them through their wristwatches came to satisfy this.

Furthermore, there could only be so many incidents of violence per episode. These incidents included shooting Centurions, despite the fact that they were robots; blowing up trees with stallion pistols was also forbidden by Sci Fi, for Kids!'s censor, Susan Frakerman, who caused many of the series's problems according to Moore, making the show impossible to work on.

Additionally, people in the series needed to be clean-cut and presentable, thus removing any ability to present realistic presentations of people. Furthermore, the FCC complained to Larson that there weren't enough kids; according to Moore, Larson replied "Okay, I'll give you kids crawling out of your ears. This seems familiar..." This resulted in The Picon Panther Scouts and the episodes that they were featured in, notably "The Picon Panther Scouts, Part I", "The Picon Panther Scouts, Part II", "Pyramid" and "Cavil's Revenge".

Unfortunately, shooting with large groups of children proved another major headache for the series, forcing the producers to hire child actors who were twins. In addition to the kids having reduced hours of availability, and the lack of professionalism exhibited by them, the cast and crew had to deal with the "stage moms, all of whom ought to be locked up" and the teachers for each kid. As Moore put it, "if the kid is a star you have to listen to the teacher as if she were speaking from on high" regardless of the reason. He continued, "they were even worse than Wheaton."

Later, as told by Thompson, Frakerman questioned the information in the planetarium scene in "Night of the Resurrection Ship", and believed the meatball joke in the same episode to be sexual innuendo -- which resulted in Larson peppering additional meatball jokes in that episode, in addition to its conclusion, "Death of Six".

Syndication and DVD releases
The eleven series episodes were rolled into the television syndication package for Battlestar Galactica and Caprica and were given the same title as its parent programs. Some of the episodes were edited together to produce a DVD under the title Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (an obvious mis-print. Very few copies of the DVD release became public. Like its parent, Galactica 1980 was never released on VHS or Betamax.

As of August 2016, the Sci Fi Channel in America and the SPACE Channel in Canada periodically air the series. The three parts of the pilot were featured as part of SPACE's 2013 New Years Day marathon of the re-imagined series.

In the US, a DVD set of the series was released in December 2010. In the UK Galactica 1980 was released on 18th February 2011 .
Notes
* The series suffered from what are now considered science fiction clichés. For some fans, the addition of the mysterious Doctor Zee, a prodigy child (played by a 46-year-old actor) that serves as counsel to Adama, pushed their suspension of disbelief to the breaking point.

* Many fans of the re-imagined series over the years since the series' conclusion have demonstrated scorn for the re-imagined Galactica 1980, often considering it apocryphal with the exception of one episode: "The Return of the Harbinger of Death," whose story of the fate of a popular character of the re-imagined series was well written and full of the same energy found in many of of the re-imagined series episodes. (Battlestar Wiki treats this aired series as canonical for the purposes of this encyclopedia.)
Official Statements
* Ronald D. Moore discusses his thoughts on the show to John Larroquette:
: Ron Moore: Let's face it, Galactica 1980 was an awful show. It deserved to be dropped. At the time, I remember that I posted a big sign on my office door with the name Eileen on it. We had been told if the ratings dropped to the codename Eileen that we would be cut. Every morning my then life partner, Bradley Thompson, and I would chant "Come on, Eileen!" Must have been a great mantra, because the show dropped steadily, week after week. ([S]o much for the nice writer's comments about building an audience.) Of course, Brad and I wanted out of our contracts in the worst way. ([W]e had just s[o]ld the Sten 2.0 series and were desperate to get start[e]d). Because of the "f[a]mily hour" timeslot, the censors were always making us put in "educational beats" for the childrens. I personally told Susan Frakerman, then head of Sci Fi, for Kids!'s program practices, that they ought to open every episode of the show with an "educational" tag that read: "Why aren't you little bug snipes watching Six Feet Under." Susan wholeheartedly agreed with our sympathies.

* Glen A. Larson discusses Edward James Olmos' involvement with the spin-off in "Sciography":
: Glen Larson: Edward called me and said his heart was broken over the fact that he wouldn't be in it. I don't think I've ever told anybody that, but I... I... I, um, I guess I reacted somewhat sympathetically to how he felt and, uh, rehired him. But it probably would've been better in terms of the cleanness and clarity to have gone forward some generations, and continued the trek.

* Anne Lockhart (Sheba) and Richard Hatch (Zarek) discuss their thoughts on the series:
: Richard Hatch: And [[Grace Park|the hot chick [Grace Park]]]….
: Lockhart: Oh, yeah,, she stayed hot! And everybody else died. I thought it was pretty bad, frankly. I watched one episode and was so offended that I never watched another one. (to Richard) What did you think about it?
: Hatch: I think you summed it up pretty well!
I agree. I don't remember anyone else dying either, but the body count got reduced. I just figure with one dead Roslin redshirt listed, that it might make sense to make it two, just so it would match up with the three death population decrease. Ltcrashdown

The sketchy numbers in the early few episodes can be accounted for in a few ways. First off, people could have been injured or heavily irradiated in the holocaust and eventually died a few days later. Secondly, people could have been injured/killer during the events of "33". Ron Moore mentions a deleted take where Edward James Olmos improvises a line about "10 suicides", for instance. Thirdly, people could have been counted twice, or not counted at all. If you remember the first couple days after 9/11, it was originally thought that around 6,000 people had died, until the estimates were revised down to 3,000. Given that the only source for the survivor count in the first season is Laura's whiteboard, some inaccuracies are to be expected.
Rationale for Death Count between "Epiphanies" and "Black Market"
We conclude that the bomber killed herself in the attack based on the following dialogue:
:Bomber: None of us want to die, but the fighting must end. If my sacrifice sends a signal to the Cylon that brings peace, then it was worth it. I do this for my children, and for the children that will follow them. Gods willing, demand peace, demand peace!
And that at least two civilians were killed based on this:
:Adama: People are dead.
So at least two people died in total as a result of the attack. It seems unlikely that Adama included the suicide bomber in this count, which puts the total death toll at the bomber and at least two civilians. --Peter Farago 01:29, 11 February 2006 (EST)

Agreed. Though I must advise against actually basing theories on all of this. I mean it's just a way of keeping track of the current number of humans: in Season 1 the numbers changed around a lot; remember that point when like 30 people died with no apparent explanation? I mean, jumps of 20-50 people might be pushing it, but when it comes to changes of around just 4-5 people, this can be offset by newborn babies, and conversly, the number that have died could be augmented by those civilians dying of more everyday means in the Fleet (murder, poor medical supplies, industrial accidents, etc.) I'm just saying: It was never a perfectly tuned system to begin with.--The Merovingian 01:50, 11 February 2006 (EST)
Analysis on Baltar's Initial Projections is Off
In The Captain's Hand, where Baltar gives Roslin the fleet projections, the analysis erroneously goes on to state 7.5 deaths per day as a part of the fleet projections. That is a perspective, and it's off. Give Baltar credit enough to factor the known deathrate of 2.1 a day; ultimately leading to 62 years to total annihilation.

It is to my understanding that 18 years is how long it would be where the survivors would no longer be able to repopulate humanity. That is my initial thought, and what makes the most sense. From there the remaining survivors would simply live out the rest of their days or be killed, ending all of known humanity. Which, by the given analysis of 2.1 a day is 62 years.

The 18 years factor should not be used with the given analysis of 2.1 a day versus the erroneous 7.5 a day. That 7.5 does not match the deathrate from Season 1 to end of Season 2. --AJFederation 01:42, 23 July 2006 (CDT)
In biology, there is a concept of gene fixation, where a species loses genetic diversity and becomes highly susceptible to disease. Contributing to this is the reproductive population of a species. Since we have not a seen an age distribution chart, Baltar could be alluding to this concept. To illustrate, if the Fleet was reduced to 1000 males only or 500 males & 500 post menopausal females, the human race would functionally be extinct. Based on the current information, it is difficult to determine the truth.--Killerman 07:00, 15 October 2006 (CDT)
An idea for improved lucidity
This page has some interesting information. Over the seasons, however, it has become a bit cluddered and difficult to read the data, especially with all the one-item bullet lists. What about arranging all the relevant(!) data (that is, everything except for Adama's shaving :P) in one or more tables (e.g. one for each season) with four columns (Day, Count, Episode, Events)? --Pedda 07:49, 29 October 2006 (CST)

Crossroads, Part I
As I noted on the page, there is a conflict in numbers. From "LDYB, Part II" we have 39,192 living in New Caprica City. "Crossroads" gives the number as 44,035. This is close to the total human population we calculated in the "Precipice" section and might be accurate if we don't take the "half-strength" comment too literally - which the page does. It's more of a turn of phrase than a true number.<br/>
But then the lawyer notes the number of escapees as 38,838. This is obviously lower than numbers given in all previous episodes and thus has to exclude the military personnel. It's possible to reconcile the data, but including the military in one and excluding it in another is a very weird way of counting. --Serenity 11:01, 19 March 2007 (CDT)
:You mixed up the numbers: 39,192 is the population of New Caprica City after a year of living there. The missing 4,843 people could very well have died in the intervening year because of medicine shortages, climate (it seemed like a pretty cold place in the winter, and those tents are probably not very well heated), bad working conditions or other causes. This leaves 'only' 354 deaths during the Cylon occupation, which makes sense as well since Baltar was quite shocked at having to sign a death list with 200 names on it. Such large-scale executions probably hadn't occurred before. Of course this doesn't mean Baltar isn't responsible for the full 5,197 since it was his idea to settle on New Caprica in the first place, despite its being barely habitable. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:05, 21 March 2007 (CDT)
::Ok, I think I figured it out. I'll shortly add it to "Crossroads, Part I" and here. It actually fits pretty well with what has been established and what we calculated before. Curiously she is counting only the civilian population, and the "44305" also included the civilians in orbit despite her talking about "those who settled on New Caprica". --Serenity 10:08, 21 March 2007 (CDT)

After, some confusing calculations, I managed to make the numbers fit very well with what we had estimated before. But there is still one annoying glitch: the number of military personnel with 2,597. This roughly fits with our estimate of the combined crews who escaped New Caprica, each battlestar having roughly half its normal crew. However 2600 is just about the crew Galactica had at the beginning, which conflicts with the overcrowding depicted after the destruction of Pegasus. The problematic thing is the "Crossroads" figure. If it really means only the civilians it should be lower to shift more to the military.

Other options:<br/>
1.) Taking the 4,835 as the death toll of the settlement is possible, but all that would do is decrease the death toll of the Cloud Nine explosion. The estimates of the population in orbit are still ca. 4,200. But it fixes the casualty figure of 5,197 Cassidy gives. <br/>
2.) One could take the 44,035 as the survivors of Cloud Nine. However that puts those deaths at 318, which is somewhat low for three or so ships. --Serenity 12:00, 21 March 2007 (CDT)

: Many of Galacticas personnel became civilians (Duck, Norah, Jammer, Seelix, et al.), so they were probably counted in as civvies. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate 17:03, 21 March 2007 (CDT)

I'm not entirely sure how accurate we can really be. During that year, many of the military personnel had decided to leave military service and become back of the colonists on New Caprica. Thrace and the Tyrols are two good examples of the many military personnel that left. So that 2,597 might not be at all accurate either. Even in the beginning of the season, Lee Adama had argued with his father that BOTH the battlestars were less than half-staff and half strength, which would indicate to me that the # of military personnel is not accurate already.

I now kinda wish RDM left the footage of Cassidy doing the full calculation of the fleet out. In the podcast he mentioned how the lawyer went from 50 trillion lives to the current survivor count with all these calculations and minuses, etc. They had to shorten it for time sake which is a shame as this debate about how she got her numbers would probably not exist right now. --LifeStar 23:51, 21 March 2007 (CDT)
We should probably get rid of that picture. It's kinda nice, but outdated, since we're below 40,000 now. Someone could probably whip up a new one, but the show doesn't allow any absolute dating of events anymore.

Or how about a new one without a timescale? Instead of a timescale, it could be nice to directly name the events that lead to drastic increases and decreases in the population. -- Serenity 18:49, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
* Tough one. I'm not sure there's much point, just yet, since Cylon identity appears to be a fuzzy concept. Ergo, unless/until we hear an instance of Number Five referred to by some alias other than "Doral", it's as good a designation as any. There's some suggestion that any human name adopted by a Cylon agent is an alias, not a name they think of themselves as (with the exception of Caprica Eight and Galactica Eight, both of whom actually think of themselves as Sharon Valerii). Making it more complicated, it seems to me that not all, say, Number Threes are actually 100% the same 'person'. There's a definite sense that resurrection is not just about booting up a replacement "clone", but actually installing the personality of one dead instance and using it to boot a new one. Each instance has its own memories and experiences. Those may eventually sift their way into a common information pool (shared not only by other instances of the same number, but all Cylons), but the sense of being the one that actually experienced it appears to be unique to a given instance. For example, only Caprica Six appears to be hallucinating Baltar, not all Number Sixes (Numbers Six?). Only Caprica Eight and Galactica Eight appear to be having severe personality issues over their experiences as Sharon Valerii, not all Number Eights; although there's a hint that it may be a 'bug' in the programming of Number Eight in general that makes her susceptible to it. Furthermore, Galactica Eight (now on Caprica) is still having those issues despite resurrection, just as Caprica Six is still attached to Baltar post-resurrection.--Uncle Mikey 16:55, 3 March 2006 (CST)
Rank equivalences
These ranks have been speculatively expanded in order to provide a rough rank equivalence with the United States Navy. Many aspects of the following table are speculative.

The following table exists mainly to improve understanding of Colonial ranks for those familiar with the US military and similarly structured organizations. However, while the Colonial Fleet has many parallels with modern armed forces, it also diverges from them in certain places, for example in the duties of commanders and admirals, or the place of the CAG within the ship's hierarchy. Therefore, the emphasis is on placing the ranks in their most appropriate place within the Battlestar Galactica universe, which is why they don't necessarily match perfectly with modern ranks.

The officer ranks of the Colonial Marine Corps have yet to be established on screen or by official sources and thus are not listed here (see Official Statements). The Marine Corps's enlisted ranks currently seen so far mirror real world ranks.
*The rank of commander is somewhat unclear and also encompasses duties of both modern admirals and captains. While there are some arguments to be made to equate it with rear admiral, lower half, Battlestar Wiki chooses to equate it with captain, because this comes closest to describing the command structure on Galactica with Adama as CO and Tigh as XO.
*In "Resurrection Ship, Part II", Roslin states "that someone who commands more than one ship is called an admiral". While she is simplifying matters, this also points to where the Colonials draw the distinction between a commander and an admiral.
Note
The main premise behind this table is that there is enough circumstantial evidence to equate the rank of commander with captain, and leave rear admiral as such (see footnotes), albeit combining the American split in lower and upper halves. Additionally, the Battlestar Galactica ranks should be equated with ranks that come close to their role in the series. It is also desirable to oppose the ranks of ensign to lieutenant one to one. This leaves the Battlestar Galactica structure with one rank more than the real world US Navy, which makes it necessary to leave one rank as "not available" (N/A). Whether this is major or captain is random. While one could devise a structure that provides a direct equivalence of each rank with a real world counterpart, it should be kept in mind that the Colonial Fleet is a fictional organization and works similar to but not identical to real world navies. The above table was felt to be a reasonable compromise between documenting the Battlestar Galactica universe by itself and analyzing its rank structure in a real world context.
Official Statements
*In a blog entry on February 19, 2005 Ronald Moore gave a little insight into the rank structure of Battlestar Galactica:
<blockquote>"What is the rank structure? It doesn't seem consistant with the Navy." <br>

The rank structure is derived from the original series. I didn't want to change Commander Adama to Captain Adama or Colonel Tigh to Commander Tigh, so I elected to simply embrace the co-mingled nature of the original rank structure. For our internal purposes, we've decided that the ranks are indeed a mixture of naval and army nomenclature and are basically as follows:<br>

Officers:
*Admiral
*Commander
*Colonel
*Major
*Captain
*Lieutenant
*Lieutenant (junior grade)
*Ensign

Enlisted:
*Master Chief Petty Officer
*Chief Petty Officer
*Petty Officer (1st, 2nd Class)
*Specialist
*Deck Hand
*Recruit

Just to complicate matters further, there are also Marines aboard Galactica which conform more closely to the traditional enlisted Marine ranks, with Sergeants, Sergeant-Majors (sic), etc. Unresolved is the question of whether the Marine officers would also adhere to the mixed rank structure (which sounds odd) or if they are strictly army equivalents (which makes no sense given that the "Navy" ranks seem oblivious to there being any such distinction). Aren't you glad you asked?</blockquote>
