'''Gina Inviere'''<ref>The name "Gina" is never spoken in the series until the television special "[[Razor]]". However, before that, [[Ron Moore]] used the name throughout the podcasts for the episodes where Inviere appears, and the name was widely used by fans and news writers.</ref> is the alias (meaning "insurrection" in Old [[Gemenon|Gemenese]]) of a [[humanoid Cylon]] who poses as a systems analyst aboard the battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''.

[[Image:Gina in uniform.jpg|thumb|left|150px|Gina Inviere, systems analyst.]]
Several months before, she presented the retrofit of ''Pegasus'' to the [[Ministry of Defense]] and worked out the details of the [[CNP]] upgrade with Admiral [[Helena Cain|Cain]]. During that time, the two grow close and eventually start having a relationship. They try to be discreet in front of the crew, but don't make it a secret either.

Working alongside [[Kendra Shaw]] on ''Pegasus'', Inviere manages to gain the officer's trust and use of her personal access codes.

Shortly after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|attack]] on the Twelve Colonies, Inviere is instrumental in finding a Cylon communications relay. During the [[Battle of the Communications Relay|ensuing battle]], she helps a boarding party of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] gain access to the ship, which leads to many casualties.

When Shaw encounters another Six, she realizes that Inviere is a Cylon and unmasks her in [[CIC]]. Before being knocked unconscious and taken into custody, Inviere kills two Marines but hesitates to kill Cain, suggesting her feelings for Cain were genuine.

With the destruction of mankind's homeworlds and Inviere's personal betrayal and manipulation fresh in mind, Admiral Cain quickly suppresses her feelings for Inviere, and no longer treats her as a human being, but a thing. She orders Lieutenant [[Alastair Thorne|Thorne]] to interrogate Inviere and to employ "degradation, fear, [and] shame" while being as creative as he needs to be. Thorne employs whippings and gang rape in his torture sessions, but ultimately fails to gain any intelligence ([[Razor]]).

When ''Pegasus'' encounters ''[[Galactica]]'' and her [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], Inviere is examined by Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]]. He is heartbroken by her state, and resolves to help her in any way he can. He convinces Admiral [[Helena Cain]] to permit her to be fed, and recounts to Inviere a story of his love for her copy on Caprica, before the Cylon attack ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

Inviere, speaking for the first time in many months, reveals her awareness of her true nature<ref>Inviere's behavior in "[[Razor]]" indicates that she is not a "sleeper" agent like [[Sharon Valerii]].</ref> and her mission as a soldier. She begs Baltar to kill her and put an ultimate end to her suffering. When Baltar reminds her that she would just be resurrected in another Number Six body somewhere else, Inviere reveals to him that it won't happen if the unknown Cylon ship that ''Pegasus'' is tracking is destroyed.

She calls the vessel a [[Resurrection Ship]], and that it was used to collect the consciousnesses of Cylons who die too far away from the [[Cylon homeworld]] and download them into new bodies. With no Resurrection Ship to download her consciousness, Inviere would truly die if she were killed ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).
[[Image:GinaPromo2.jpg|left|thumb|Inviere, Cylon prisoner]]
When she senses that the Resurrection Ship is destroyed, Inviere begs Baltar to kill her. She is incapable of killing herself, because within the [[Cylon religion]], suicide is a sin. However, Baltar convinces Inviere that she should go on living and get "justice" for what happened to her. With Baltar's help, Inviere escapes from her cell, makes her way to Cain's quarters and shoots Cain with a pistol, killing her. She then somehow manages to escape ''Pegasus'' ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]])<ref>As did [[Shelly Godfrey]], Inviere knows how to navigate through a battlestar without being detected, including escaping from one, since Godfrey also disappears from ''Galactica'' ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]). It is possible that Baltar helped her escape, but this is [[Battlestar Wiki:Fanwanking|fanwanking]].</ref>.

As [[Laura Roslin]] finds herself on her death bed, [[Demand Peace]] — a movement seeking peace with the Cylons — summons Baltar to ''[[Cloud Nine]]''. Here, Inviere assumes a leading role within the peace movement, her followers unaware of her Cylon nature. She disguises herself by means of glasses and a different hairstyle. Inviere attempts to convince Baltar that, upon assuming the presidency, he should go up against Adama -- and thus solidify the distrust of the military within the Fleet.

Because of the extreme sexual abuse she suffers on ''Pegasus'', and atypical of her model, Inviere abhors intimate contact of any kind, as observed when she bites Baltar when he instinctively tries to kiss her. After Roslin recovers from her cancer -- thanks to Baltar's perceived unappreciated efforts -- Inviere is given the nuclear warhead earmarked for Baltar's research as part of his [[Cylon detector]] ([[Epiphanies]]).
[[Image:CGIna.jpg|right|thumb|Inviere, [[Demand Peace]] member]]
Following Baltar's election as president of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], he visits Inviere once more aboard ''Cloud Nine'', attempting to explain to her that because of his new duties he'd be unable to see as much of her as they'd like. After he remarks that he'd make what time he could on [[New Caprica]], she tells him that she wouldn't be leaving the ship to join the new colony. Angry, Baltar attempts to leave the room, but Inviere simply says "stay," while proceeding to undress, choking back her physical aversion in a desperate attempt to make him stay with her. They share an intimate interlude.

While Baltar is being sworn in as president, Inviere sits naked on the floor of her room in front of the nuclear warhead. The timer running, The Cylon once known as Gina Inviere cries softly as the device detonates, destroying herself, ''Cloud Nine'' and several ships in the vicinity ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

With the [[Resurrection Ship]] destroyed, the death of Inviere is presumed final.<ref>The notion of the permanence of Inviere's death is reinforced by the testimony of a [[Number Five]] copy, indicating that [[New Caprica]] was uncovered by the Cylons by accident when they arrived one year after Inviere's death. If Inviere's consciousness was transmitted to a second Resurrection Ship, she might have disclosed the location of the Fleet sooner.</ref>

===Notes===
*Gina is a reference to some fans' derisive nickname for the Re-imagined Series, GINO meaning "''Galactica'' In Name Only". This itself is an allusion to [[Wikipedia:Republican In Name Only|RINO]] and [[Wikipedia:Democrat In Name Only|DINO]], both derogatory political terms used in the [[w:United States|United States]] (Source: [[Podcast:Pegasus#Act 2|"Pegasus" podcast]]).
*Gina has darker hair than the other Number Six copies before "[[Torn]]". It is unknown whether she has naturally white hair which she dyes honey-blonde (another part of her disguise), or other Sixes have naturally honey-blonde hair which they dye white. When [[Caprica-Six]] is reborn ([[Downloaded]]) her hair is white. In "[[Torn]]", a Six with even darker, raven-black, hair appears. <ref>Cinematically, actor [[Tricia Helfer]]'s hair was dyed in the lighter color in Season 1. However, the dye caused damage to her hair, so wigs are used later. The hair color of Gina is the actress's natural color.</ref>
*Gina was supposed to appear in a [[List of Deleted Scenes (RDM)#Downloaded|subplot]] in "[[Downloaded]]" in which she conspires with [[D'Anna Biers]] to kidnap [[Hera]]. However, the episode ran long and all of the scenes involving the scheme were cut.
'''Sharon "Boomer" Valerii''' is a copy of the Cylon human model [[Number Eight]] who is initially planted as a "sleeper" agent in the [[Colonial Fleet]]. She is unaware of her Cylon nature and serves for two years as Lieutenant Valerii on ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', where she is assigned as a [[Raptor]] pilot and also engaged in a secret relationship with Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]]. After the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]], her underlying programming repeatedly emerges which leads her to unconscious acts of sabotage. Growing confusion about her true self result in a deep depression and a failed suicide attempt. After Valerii returns from a successful mission to destroy a Cylon [[basestar]], she shoots Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] in the chest, wounding him critically. She is incarcerated in the [[brig]] and soon afterwards killed by Specialist [[Cally]].

Her consciousness is downloaded and she is reborn in another body. Subsequently, she experiences severe problems integrating into Cylon society and long considers herself more human than Cylon. She eventually works together with [[Caprica-Six]] in an attempt to change Cylon popular opinion about humans and she emerges as one of the Cylon leaders jointly responsible for the end of the occupation of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] and later the Cylon occupation on [[New Caprica]].
== Biography ==

=== Life on Galactica ===
Valerii is a "sleeper" agent, unsuspecting of her Cylon status. As far as she is aware, she was born on the mining colony of [[Troy]], as the daughter of a family from [[Aerelon]] ([[Flesh and Bone]]). Troy itself was destroyed in an unexplained cataclysm, allowing Valerii's background to be established as that of an orphan. Following her arrival on board ''Galactica'', she enters into a relationship with the ship's Chief Petty Officer [[Galen Tyrol]], which is against military protocols concerning fraternization between officers and non-officers. Whether this is unintentional or a subconscious reaction to her Cylon programming remains unclear.

At the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]], Valerii is flying her Raptor to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] with ''Galactica's'' last remaining operational [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] squadron, when they learn of the attacks and attempt to engage two [[Cylon Raider]]s. However, the Viper squadron is destroyed, and the Raptor is damaged while trying to escape, forcing Valerii and her [[ECO]] [[Karl Agathon]] to make an emergency landing on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. After repairing the Raptor, they are mobbed by desperate civilians and undertake a rescue operation, lifting a number of children and several adults from the planet. Agathon chooses to give up his place aboard the Raptor so that Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] can be rescued ([[Miniseries]]).

After being found by [[Laura Roslin]]'s group of stranded military and civilian ships, Valerii works within the new civilian [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], assisting Roslin's attempts to gather other stranded civilian ships in the space surrounding Caprica. She finds a number of ships critical to the fledgling Fleet's survival, such as a fuel tanker. After the new assembled Fleet, led by ''Galactica'', leaves the solar system of the Colonies, Valerii aids in other critical acts, including the discovery of a [[tylium]]-rich asteroid, replete with an active Cylon mine ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]), and locating a source of water to replenish the Fleet's lost supply after the sabotage of ''Galactica's'' stores ([[Water]]).

=== Acts of sabotage ===
[[image:sharontyrol.jpg|170px|left|Valerii and Chief [[Tyrol]].|thumb]]
At the same time as she is supporting the human Fleet, Valerii's underlying Cylon subroutines periodically emerge. Her Cylon programming is the cause of the sabotage of ''Galactica's'' water tanks ([[Water]]). Later, she likely assists a copy of [[Aaron Doral]] to access a munitions store. The Doral copy constructs a suicide bomb which nearly kills Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] and Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]].

Valerii finds herself soaking wet, after she awakes to her human personality shortly after the bombs used to destroy ''Galactica's'' water tanks were planted. She becomes increasingly concerned and starts to question her true self. Her worry increases when she experiences a certain attachment to a captured [[Cylon Raider]], and is able to give insight into how it can be properly assessed and understood ([[Six Degrees of Separation]], [[Flesh and Bone]]). Her concerns are further elevated when, following the bombing by Doral, ''Galactica's'' [[Master-at-Arms]], Sergeant [[Hadrian]], suspects her and Chief [[Tyrol]] of Cylon complicity ([[Litmus]]).

Tyrol distances himself from Valerii after this incident, and he later ends their relationship following the arrest of Specialist [[Socinus]] ([[Litmus]]). Facing Tyrol's suspicions concerning her activities immediately before the bombing, Valerii finds herself emotionally isolated and stressed. She takes the Cylon detector test created by Dr. [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]], but he hides her positive test result in fear that once discovered, she might immediately retaliate and kill him ([[Flesh and Bone]]). Valerii finds short solace in Baltar's test, but deals with an anonymous accusation, when she finds the word "Cylon" written on the mirror of her locker; though it is possible she wrote it herself, unknowingly ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]).

[[Image:Valshootadama.jpg|235px|thumb|right|Valerii shoots Commander [[William Adama|Adama]].|thumb]]
Frightened and alone, Valerii withdraws into herself and attempts suicide, but is initially unable to do so. During her second attempt, she is interrupted by Dr. Baltar who, rather than discouraging her, essentially gives her his blessing on her suicide. Following his departure from the bunkroom, Valerii succeeds in shooting herself, but her Cylon personality apparently interrupts the attempt. Valerii can only wound herself in her right cheek ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

After [[Kara Thrace]] absconds with a captured Cylon Raider intended for an attack on a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] orbiting [[Kobol]], Commander Adama asks Valerii and ECO [[Margaret Edmondson|Racetrack]] to use a [[Cylon transponder]] in their Raptor to infiltrate the basestar and place a nuclear warhead within to destroy it. The mission is a success, but when the weapon would not auto-release from the Raptor after landing, Valerii exits the ship and enters the basestar. Inside, she encounters a dozen copies of herself, confirming her worst fears. Valerii escapes in the Raptor just before the warhead detonates and destroys the basestar. Back on ''Galactica'', her encounter with the other [[Number Eight|Eight]] models on the basestar apparently triggers Valerii's Cylon programming to emerge once more, and she shoots Commander Adama in the chest while being congratulated on her successful mission in [[CIC]], wounding him critically ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]).

=== Imprisonment and death ===
After shooting [[William Adama|Adama]], Valerii is quickly restrained by guards and jailed in the [[brig]]. During her imprisonment, Colonel [[Tigh]] attempts to forcibly extract information from her at gunpoint, but Valerii stonewalls him and even asks him to shoot her ([[Scattered]]). Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] is later incarcerated in the same brig cell by Tigh, also suspected of being a Cylon. While imprisoned together, Valerii tries to convince Tyrol that her feelings for him were real and important, but he rejects her and threatens to kill her if she touched him.
[[Image:Sharondeath.jpg|235px|Valerii dies in Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol's]] arms.|right|thumb]]
Dr. [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] later enters the cell, ostensibly to collect a blood sample from Tyrol to prove his innocence using the [[Cylon detector]], but he instead injects Tyrol with a potent toxin that would kill him in a matter of seconds if Baltar does not give him an antidote. Baltar interrogates Valerii, demanding to know how many other Cylons are in the Fleet, using the dying Tyrol to blackmail her. Valerii first protests that she does not know, but as Tyrol is about to die, she reveals that there are eight other Cylons in the Fleet and Baltar then revives Tyrol.

Soon after, while being transferred to a new reinforced cell built to hold Cylons for later experiments and long term incarceration, a large crowd of crewmembers jeers at her and calls her a traitor. Specialist [[Cally]] who considers Valerii responsible for Tyrol's imprisonment breaks through the crowd holding a gun and shoots Valerii at point-blank range. Valerii's last words are "I love you, Chief" and she dies in Tyrol's arms ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Valerii's body is sent to the morgue and autopsied. Later, the recovered Commander Adama visits her corpse, asking "why" aloud, and weeps over her body. Adama pronounces a very mild reprimand for Cally, sentencing her to 30 days in the brig for discharging a weapon without authorization. Cally is never tried for murder, since Cylons are not seen as people ([[The Farm]]).

===Rebirth and life among Cylons===
[[Image:Cylon resurrection.jpg|235px|thumb|left|Valerii is reborn in a new body.|thumb]]
Valerii's consciousness does not die. When she is shot by Specialist [[Cally]], ''Galactica'' is close enough to a Cylon [[Resurrection Ship|resurrection ship]] so that her consciousness is retrieved for download into another body. On rebirth, Valerii rejects her Cylon nature and continues to call herself "Sharon" instead of "Eight," even going so far as to reclaim her former apartment on Caprica. A copy of [[Number Three]], representing the status quo of the Cylons, is deeply disturbed by this and suggests that Valerii be "[[boxed]]."

[[Caprica-Six]] who is seen as a war hero among Cylons just as Valerii, protests and Three advises her to get Valerii to change. When Valerii laments the loss of Tyrol, Caprica-Six tells her about her own love for a human, [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]], which prompts Valerii to inform her that he is still alive. Suspecting that Three has an ulterior motive and wants to box both of them, the two play along and Valerii announces her intent to move out of her old apartment. After a [[Caprica Resistance]] bombing, Valerii, Caprica-Six, and Three are trapped in a garage with a member of the human resistance, [[Samuel Anders]]. There, Caprica-Six reveals their true intentions and declares that Valerii and herself are celebrities in a culture of unity, and, through their love for humans, have realized the horror of the Cylons' actions. Using their celebrity, they could convince a large portion of the Cylon society of their new belief that the genocide of humanity was wrong. Valerii stops Anders from killing Three, but is surprised to see as Caprica-Six kills Three herself. After telling Anders to escape, Valerii agrees to help Caprica-Six reveal the truth of the genocide to the other Cylons ([[Downloaded]]).

Valerii and Caprica-Six are obviously successful in their attempt to change popular opinion among Cylons about the genocide on the human race. According to a [[Cavil]] model who is shortly incarcerated on board ''Galactica'', Valerii and Caprica-Six convinced a majority that "the slaughter of mankind was a mistake" which ultimately leads to an end of the occupation of the [[Twelve Colonies]] ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

One year later, Valerii is one of the leaders of the Cylon force occupying [[New Caprica]]. But as other Cylons start to consider the occupation a failure, her influence appears to decrease quickly, most evident when she is unable to help Cally get out of detention, as Cally is about to be executed ([[Precipice]]). Their initial plan on New Caprica, "to push past the conflict that separated us from humans for so long", fails and the occupation is ended after four months ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

Following the retreat from New Caprica, Valerii is on the same [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] as Caprica-Six and Baltar and appears to be one of the Cylons responsible for the Cylon-human hybrid child, [[Hera]]. At a stand-off with the human [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] at the [[Algae planet]], Valerii is part of a Cylon delegation to make demands regarding the [[Eye of Jupiter]], but on board ''Galactica'', she is identified as "Boomer" by [[Sharon Agathon]] and denied entry. During this first meeting between them, Valerii informs Agathon that her daughter, Hera, is still alive, and she suggests that Agathon will never be fully accepted among humans, because they continue to treat her as a thing. This confrontation seems to imply that Valerii has now accepted her nature and place amongst Cylons ([[The Eye of Jupiter]]).

==Notes==
*This [[Number Eight]] is often just called "Boomer" colloquially, as that callsign is closely associated with her, while [[Sharon Agathon]] is usually called "Sharon" and more recently "Athena". Until season 3, this copy was referred to as the ''Galactica'' copy ("''Galactica''-Sharon"), because she was first encountered on ''Galactica''.
*[[Number Six]] rhetorically asks Baltar in "[[Flesh and Bone]]" why he thinks that Valerii got the callsign "Boomer".
**Valerii might have earned her callsign for her loud landings with [[Raptors]] ([[Miniseries]], [[Flight of the Phoenix]], [[Scar]]).
**As shown twice in "[[Water]]" and by her destruction of the basestar in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]", Valerii appeared to have a penchant for explosions.
**Number Six could have been using sexual innuendo when she asked about Valerii's callsign.
**"Boomer" is also a nickname for a ballistic missile submarine. "[[Karl Agathon|Helo]]" is a similar nickname for a helicopter.
'''Sharon "Athena" Agathon''' is a copy of the Cylon human model [[Number Eight]] who is first encountered by [[Karl Agathon|Karl "Helo" Agathon]], when he is stranded on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. She is initially assigned to seduce him by impersonating Lieutenant [[Sharon Valerii]], as part of a Cylon cross-breeding experiment, but later turns against her people and helps him escape the planet; pregnant with his child during that time. Helo, first shocked by her true nature, ultimately accepts her as the mother of his child and declares his love for her.

Once on ''[[Galactica]]'', she is imprisoned and long seen as a mere object. She frequently provides intelligence, but is severely mistreated by an interrogator from ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' who beats and sexually assaults her. Over time, she earns Admiral [[William Adama|Adama's]] trust by helping the [[Colonial Fleet]] escape peril several times, and she is eventually appointed as a Colonial Officer and marries Karl Agathon. Agathon gives birth on ''Galactica'', but her daughter, [[Hera]], is subsequently hidden from her, because President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] considers the baby a threat to the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. Agathon believes Hera to be dead and only learns the truth about her child during a confrontation with Sharon Valerii over one year later.

== Biography ==
=== Cylon cross-breeding experiment on Caprica ===
Sharon is a [[Number Eight]] model first seen on [[Caprica]] shortly after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]] and the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] decide to use her in an elaborate experiment focused on [[Karl Agathon|Karl "Helo" Agathon]] who is stranded on the planet. She is an identical copy of Helo's friend and colleague Lieutenant [[Sharon Valerii]] and the Cylons hope to explore the possibilities of Cylon-human procreation by getting Helo to fall in love with her ([[The Farm]]). Sharon appears to Helo to rescue him after he is captured by a [[Number Six|Six]] and several [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]]. Unaware that Cylons have developed human models, Helo believes her to be Sharon Valerii from ''Galactica'', returning to rescue him ([[33]]). Following this staged rescue, she leads Helo to a Raptor, now surrounded by Cylon Centurions, and convinces him that they have no direct way off the planet ([[Water]]). Sharon is able to impersonate Lieutenant Valerii convincingly, since she has accessed Valerii's entire memories ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

After receiving a feigned Colonial signal on a radio receiver they carry, Sharon leads Helo to a city where they find a fully-equipped fallout shelter in which two people can live in reasonable security, hidden from above-ground Cylon operations, and with sufficient supplies to last a considerable period of time ([[Act of Contrition]]). The purpose in establishing this retreat is to elicit an emotional response in Helo towards his Cylon companion. When this fails and Helo continues to seek a way off Caprica, the Cylons lead him to believe that Sharon has been captured, concluding that if Helo does not seek to rescue her, the experiment has failed and he must be killed ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]).

Helo does undertake a successful rescue attempt and shortly after, the two of them have sex for the first time in a nearby forest. Helo had always been fond of the original Valerii on ''Galactica'', but his affection for her was stilled by her relationship with Chief [[Galen Tyrol]] ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]). Pleased with the progress, the Cylons set up a new hideout, a cabin in the woods, and Sharon is instructed to lead him there and have him stay with her – or kill him, if he attempts to leave ([[Flesh and Bone]]). But she begins to question the Cylons' overall goal. Realizing that she has herself fallen in love with Helo, Sharon disobeys her instructions and leads Helo to [[Delphi]], where they hope to steal a vehicle and get off the planet ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]). On their way to Delphi, she shows signs of being pregnant, succumbing to a bout of morning sickness ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]) and developing a ravenous appetite ([[Colonial Day]]).

===Revelation of her true identity and arrival at the Fleet ===
[[Image:Boomerhelokara.jpg|235px|left|[[Helo]] attempts to stop Lt. [[Kara Thrace|Thrace]] from shooting Sharon, in the [[Delphi Museum]].|thumb]]
On reaching Delphi, Sharon and Helo break into the Cylon facilities to gain access to the spaceport. But as Helo encounters yet another [[Number Eight]] model, he draws the initial conclusion that Sharon is a human clone created by the Cylons and goes on the run alone ([[Colonial Day]]). When Sharon catches up with him, she tried to calm him down and eventually challenges him to shoot her, after he tells her to stay away ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). Helo can only bring himself to wound her, and he takes Sharon with him to use her in some way to get off Caprica. While Helo keeps her at gunpoint, Sharon leads him to the [[Delphi Museum]]. Waiting out a storm in a nearby ruined building, she explains to him that she is “Sharon”, not a mere clone or a copy, and that she is as real as [[Sharon Valerii]] on ''Galactica''. She also tells him that her love for him is real and that she is pregnant with his child.

When Sharon and Helo come across Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]] who has landed near the museum to retrieve the [[Arrow of Apollo]], Thrace realizes on-sight that Sharon is a Cylon (having left Valerii behind on ''Galactica'') and she attempts to shoot her. Helo stops Thrace and reveals to her that Sharon is pregnant with his child ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Thrace also wrongly concludes that she must be a Cylon copy of the real Valerii on ''Galactica''; Sharon's attempts to explain her identity to her are unsuccessful. While Thrace and Helo argue over her, Sharon escapes in Thrace's [[Cylon Raider]] to save herself and the life of her unborn child ([[Scattered]]).

Several days later, Sharon returns to Helo who is now with a human [[Caprica Resistance|resistance movement]] that has formed on Caprica. She offers her help in finding Thrace who was abducted during a Cylon ambush ([[The Farm]]). Thrace manages to escape to the outside of the hospital where she was imprisoned and Sharon arrives at the rescue scene in a stolen Cylon [[Heavy Raider]], destroying several [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]] that attack the Resistance rescue party. Following the successful rescue, Sharon accompanies Helo and Thrace on their way back to the human [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] in the Heavy Raider.

When they arrive at the Fleet and Sharon walks aboard the ''[[Astral Queen]]'', Captain [[Lee Adama]] reacts violently. The son of Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] who was shot by the Cylon "sleeper" agent Valerii grabs her and places his gun to her head. Helo draws his sidearm against Adama, forcing a standoff. President [[Laura Roslin]] urges both men to withdraw their weapons, but then immediately orders Sharon to be ejected out an airlock. Sharon tells Roslin she knows the location of the [[Tomb of Athena]], an ancient place Roslin is trying to find, and she reconsiders, placing Sharon in the brig. Roslin later explains that she suspects Sharon is willing to cooperate, because she wants to protect Helo and her unborn child, something Roslin interprets as a mothering instinct.

=== Guide on Kobol ===
[[image:sharonhome.jpg|235px|Sharon on Kobol, with [[Helo]], Priestess [[Elosha]] and President [[Roslin]].|thumb]]
Sharon accompanies [[Laura Roslin|Roslin's]] party to [[Kobol]]. She recites specific passages of the [[Tomb of Athena]] in the scriptures of the [[Sacred Scrolls]] and plots the group's path along a ridge nearby. On their way they are ambushed by [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]] who open fire. As the others take cover and return fire, Sharon vaults away, with Captain [[Lee Adama|Adama]] in pursuit, believing she is trying to escape. Sharon picks up a grenade launcher lying ahead, and as Adama thinks she is about to shoot him, she aims for the remaining Centurion and destroys it ([[Home, Part I]]). At camp, Adama voices suspicions about Helo who still loves Sharon, despite his awareness of her true nature as a Cylon. During the trek, Sharon casually tells Helo that their child is a girl.

Shortly after, Commander [[William Adama|Adama’s]] search party arrives at Roslin's camp. When Adama sees Sharon who exactly resembles the Cylon who shot him, he immediately tries to choke her to death. He is forced to release her, after Sharon touches his fresh wound, leaving him with severe chest pain. During their struggle, Sharon enigmatically references what Adama said over [[Sharon Valerii|Sharon Valerii’s]] dead body, saying “and you asked why” aloud.

Later, one of [[Tom Zarek|Tom Zarek's]] followers, [[Meier]], tries to convince Sharon to help him kill both Adamas, as part of a plan to gain control of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. Sharon initially believed that Sharon Valerii was being held in the [[brig]], but Meier informs her that she was killed. She expresses her outrage to Helo that [[Cally]] received only a minor punishment for this murder. Sharon deduces that the Colonials do not see humanoid Cylons as people and that she must take matters into her own hands to prove her trustworthiness. Sharon appears to take up Meier's proposal to kill both Commander Adama and Captain Adama, but as Meier draws his weapon, she kills him instead, saving the lives of both Adamas. She announces to Commander Adama that she is not the same Cylon who shot him, and that she has no hidden protocols waiting to be activated; she makes her own choices. She then surrenders her weapon to Adama and successfully leads them to the Tomb of Athena.

=== Cooperation with the human Fleet ===
[[Image:Valerii_virus.jpg|thumb|170px|left|Sharon connected to ''Galactica's'' main [[Computers|computer]].]]
Sharon is brought aboard ''Galactica'' and imprisoned in a new reinforced cell that was originally designed to incarcerate [[Sharon Valerii]]. The virtual [[Number Six]] tells Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] that Sharon's baby will be born in that cell and that the child belongs to Baltar and her ([[Home, Part II]]).

During her imprisonment, Sharon nearly has a miscarriage, and is brought to [[sickbay]] where Dr. [[Cottle]] succeeds in saving the fetus. A [[Number Three]] model who poses as the reporter [[D'anna Biers]] in the [[Fleet News Service]], stumbles upon Sharon while filming a documentary on board ''Galactica'' and she manages to send footage of Sharon back to Caprica. The Cylons are surprised, yet overjoyed, that Sharon is still alive. They are concerned that her hybrid child survives; saying that it must be protected at all costs ([[Final Cut]]).

When ''Galactica'' experiences mysterious computer failures and system malfunctions from a mutated version of a Cylon virus, Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] orders Helo to show the incarcerated Sharon the strange Cylon code. Sharon identifies it as a virulent [[logic bomb]] that will take control of the ship and kill off the crew without her help. Reluctantly, on advice from President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], Adama brings Sharon to [[CIC]], where she cuts her arm open and connects her body to a fiber optic line to communicate with ''Galactica's'' mainframe [[Computers|computer]]. Accessing the computer, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, and then instructs Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]] to wipe the system's hard drives to erase all Cylon virus traces. As the crew restarts the ship’s computers, a massive Cylon fighter force jumps into range, leaving ''Galactica'' defenseless. Sharon makes adjustments to the code and resends the virus out on the communication channels to the Cylons, disabling the entire fleet of Cylon fighters. ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

=== Interrogation and abuse ===
[[image:Pegasus-Thorne_Boomer.jpg|235px|Sharon is beaten and sexually assaulted during an interrogation by Lt. [[Alistair Thorne|Thorne]].|thumb]]
After ''Galactica'' reunites with battlestar ''[[Pegasus]]'', Admiral [[Helena Cain]] sends Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]] to inspect the incarcerated Sharon. He beats and sexually assaults her with the help of several of his guards. Helo and Chief [[Tyrol]] find out about Thorne and what was done to his previous [[Gina|prisoner]], and they arrive in time to stop him, but Tyrol accidentally kills Thorne in the process. Both Tyrol and Helo are arrested by the ''Pegasus'' guards and taken to Admiral Cain's battlestar, where Cain hastily convenes courts-martial for them, sentencing both to death ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

Sharon's attempted rape results in a hairline fracture in one of her ribs and minor bruising. Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] who has reached a détente with Admiral Cain over Helo and Tyrol's execution personally apologizes to Sharon over the incident; this is also the first time that Adama refers to Sharon as "her", instead of "it". Later, Adama asks to speak with her in private, questioning her why the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] hate humanity. She responds by reminding him of a speech he gave before the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|attacks]], in which he suggested that humanity is a flawed creation, and she implies that therefore humanity might not deserve to survive. Sharon is later reunited with Helo and Tyrol when the two are released after Cain's death, as Adama resumes full command of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

Weeks later, President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]], on her deathbed, orders that Sharon's fetus be aborted, fearing the baby might be dangerous for the Fleet. On hearing this news, Sharon is enraged, having cooperated fully to aid the Fleet to save herself and her child, and to show that not all Cylons are dangerous. Marines are sent to take her to [[sickbay]] to forcibly perform the abortion procedure. At the last minute, Dr. [[Baltar]] learns that the fetal blood of Sharon's baby has the ability to destroy cancer cells. He takes a small blood sample and injects it into the dying Roslin; moments later, her cancer disappears. The abortion procedure is cancelled ([[Epiphanies]]).

Despite her mistreatment, Sharon continues to support the Fleet and provides intelligence. She helps Captain [[Kara Thrace|Thrace]] to understand the behavior of [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Cylon Raiders]] ([[Scar]]), and frequently assists Admiral Adama to plot the Fleet's course in order to avoid Cylon confrontation. Colonel [[Tigh]] remains extremely skeptical of her increased involvement ([[Sacrifice]]).

===Birth of her daughter Hera===
[[Image:Sharondownloaded.jpg|170px|thumb|left|[[Helo]] comforts Sharon, as Dr. [[Cottle]] start to perform an emergency birth procedure.]]
When Sharon begins to bleed due to a detached placenta, Dr. [[Cottle]] performs an emergency birth procedure to save both her and the baby's life. Sharon and Helo name the baby girl [[Hera]]. After her parents believe Hera is out of danger, the baby apparently dies due to her underdeveloped lungs and Dr. Cottle's failure to intubate her in time. Sharon, suspecting her child was killed deliberately, nearly strangles Dr. Cottle before being subdued, and she subsequently falls into a deep depression.

However, unbeknownst to Sharon and Helo, Hera is still alive. President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] who still considers the child a danger for the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] had Sharon's baby switched with the body of a dead child and, with the help of Dr. Cottle and her aide [[Tory Foster]], places Hera in the care of [[Maya]], a foster mother. Maya is told a cover story that disguises Hera's true identity ([[Downloaded]]). Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] is not informed of Roslin's plan ([[The Eye of Jupiter]]).

Sharon's depression over losing her child worsens and Helo convinces her to aid in the rescue of [[Samuel Anders]] and other survivors on [[Caprica]], in part to try and draw her out of her depression. Sharon's knowledge of Cylon [[FTL]] technology makes the rescue possible. She acts as a conduit between the Colonial Raptors and the far more advanced FTL computer salvaged from the Cylon Heavy Raider she once brought back to ''Galactica'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

On Caprica, Captain [[Kara Thrace|Thrace]] demonstrates a new level of trust for Sharon by handing her a gun during a firefight with ambushing [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]]. Later, Sharon is as perplexed as everyone else when the Cylons disengage and apparently leave the planet. She is aware, however, that [[Cavil]], a man who approaches the group and loudly proclaims the end of the occupation to be a miracle, is a [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]]. On ''Galactica'', Cavil is exposed by Chief [[Tyrol]], and Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] sends Sharon back to the brig. When asked by a distraught Helo why she did not mention that Cavil is Cylon, she replies "They killed my baby. Do you think I care about you, or us, or whether or not Adama trusts me anymore?" Sharon withdraws further, shutting Helo out completely ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

===Officer of the Colonial Fleet===
[[Image:Season 3 - Promo - Epi 1 - 2 - C-Number Eight, Adama, Helo.jpg|235px|Sharon Agathon is sworn in by  Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] as a Colonial Officer.|thumb]]
More than a year later, and four months after ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus's'' retreat from [[New Caprica]], Sharon Agathon is now married to Karl "Helo" Agathon. Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] has taken to sitting down to tea and talking in confidence with her and her cell now has a couch, a table, and other amenities ([[Occupation]]). Admiral Adama commissions Agathon into the [[Colonial Fleet]] as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade). In her first mission she leads an insertion force that will serve as a liaison between the [[New Caprica Resistance]] and ''Galactica'' during the extraction of the New Caprica population. She commands two Raptors in an intra-atmosphere jump and links up with [[Samuel Anders]] and his squad at the [[Breeders Canyon]]. Their planning is interrupted when [[Cylon Centurion|Cylon Centurions]] ambush their position ([[Precipice]]). Agathon and her assigned Marines anticipated enemy contact, so the Marines, from a supporting position, can neutralize the Cylon attackers.

On the following day, Agathon enters the Cylon [[New Caprica Detention Center|detention center]] to recover the [[launch key|launch keys]] for the grounded Colonial Ships. Two human [[New Caprica Police]] guards, not being able to distinguish her from any other Eight, let her enter and she interfaces with a data terminal to determine the location of the keys. As she is taking them, a [[Number Three]] enters the room and immediately recognizes her as the defector. The Three tells her that [[Hera]] is still alive, but Agathon responds that Adama would not lie to her, shooting the Three in each leg, and departs. When she hands over the launch keys to Chief [[Tyrol]], she asks him if he had actually seen Hera's ashes, which he affirms ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

Following the [[Battle of New Caprica]], Agathon is eating in the mess hall with Helo and [[Margaret Edmondson|Racktrack]], insisting that they not use the callsign "Boomer", since it belonged to [[Sharon Valerii]]. Helo asks the crew for suggestions for a callsign, finally opting for [[Hot Dog|Hot Dog's]] suggestion, Athena, after a number of robotic callsigns are proposed. The gathered personnel's treatment during the exchange appears to be good-natured ribbing, implying that she has managed to achieve a degree of acceptance ([[Torn]]). Agathon attends the boxing matches organized by Admiral Adama, cheering her husband and helping him during his fight with Major [[Lee Adama|Adama]] ([[Unfinished Business]]).

After the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet's]] food stocks are contaminated, Agathon undertakes a solo recon mission through a high radiation cluster to look for a planet with suitable material to replenish the Fleet's lost food supplies. Being a [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]], she is able to endure an extended stay in the cluster without endangering her own health. Her mission in the cluster is successful and she locates a planet with algae suitable for processing and consumption ([[The Passage]]).

During a stand-off at the [[Algae planet]], a Cylon delegation comes on board ''Galactica'' to make demands regarding the [[Eye of Jupiter]]. One of the boarding Cylons is Sharon Valerii, and as they meet for the first time, Valerii tells Agathon that her daughter, [[Hera]], is still alive, and suggests that Agathon will never be fully accepted among humans, because they continue to treat her as a thing. Valerii also states that Hera was seen in President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin's]] school during the occupation on New Caprica and suggests that Roslin was directly involved in feigning Hera's death. Agathon who is skeptical of Valerii's allegations at first is later informed by Admiral Adama that Roslin did indeed fabricate Hera's death without his knowledge ([[The Eye of Jupiter]]).

==Notes==
* This [[Number Eight]] is usually called "Sharon" and more recently "Athena", while [[Sharon Valerii]] is often just called "Boomer", as that callsign is closely associated with her. Until season 3, this copy was referred to as the Caprica copy ("Caprica-Sharon"), because she was first encountered on Caprica.
*Sharon Agathon's callsign, "Athena", may be a reference to her nature as a Cylon, if the Colonists share the Greek myth that Pallas Athene sprung from the head of Zeus fully grown without ever having a childhood – much as a Cylon does.
* Athena is one of the [[Religion_in_the_Twelve_Colonies#The_Lords_of_Kobol|Lords of Kobol]]. In [[Home, Part II]], Sharon relates the death of Athena on Kobol, "Athena [threw] herself down [from the Gates of Hera] onto the rocks below, out of despair over the Exodus of the thirteen tribes."
* Her callsign also creates a parallelism with the [[Original Series]] character of [[Athena (TOS)|Athena]]. In the Original Series, Athena was the daughter of [[Adama (TOS)|Adama]]. [[William Adama]], in the Re-imagined Series, felt a close fatherly bond to Sharon Valerii. Agathon's relationship with Adama is very similar and reinforces the similarity with the Original Series character.
== Biographical Notes ==

'''Bradley Thompson''' is a TV writer and producer who, before working on BSG, was best known for his work on ''Star Trek: Deep Space Nine''.

In a recent interview, <ref> [http://members.tripod.com/john_larocque/tns/thompson.html Interview with Bradley Thompson] </ref> Thompson recalled that his early impressions of ''Battlestar Galactica'' (the original series) were far from favorable: "I met (my writing partner) [[David Weddle]] in an acting class and we discovered we were both at USC School of Cinema. It was the same acting class that Richard Hatch frequented. Richard was doing the original ''Battlestar Galactica'' at that time, and everybody in class was in awe -- he was a WORKING ACTOR! And all the class ladies would go to parties and watch him when the show came on. Of course, while they were adoring him, they were ignoring me, so I didn't like the show very much. But they would have ignored me anyway, so I guess I wasn't giving the show a fair shake."

Five years later, Thompson was designing fiber-optic manufacturing equipment in what he calls "a sweatshop in Van Nuys" and he asked Weddle if he could turn his play "Memoirs of an Awkward Lover" into a screenplay. Weddle agreed, and the two ended up collaborating on the project together instead. (Nobody bought the adaptation. It's still for sale.)

After ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: Deep Space Nine|Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]'' Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr read Weddle's book about filmmaker Sam Pekinpah, Weddle secured an invitation to pitch for the show and Thompson & Weddle collaborated on pitch ideas for the series.

Their first credited story on the series, was the fourth season episode "[http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Rules_of_Engagement Rules of Engagement]". The teleplay was written by [[Ronald D. Moore]]. Their first credited teleplay for Deep Space Nine was the fifth season episode, "[http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Assignment The Assignment]."

After their second teleplay for DS9, "[http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Business_as_Usual Business As Usual]," Thompson & Weddle joined the show's writing staff for seasons six and seven, writing two episodes from the final tightly-plotted nine-episode arc of the series.

In 2002, Thompson and Weddle were invited to a screening of the new ''Battlestar Galactica'' miniseries. "We expected it to be like so many other remakes of failed series -- but hey, Ron (Moore) wrote it, it'll be worth a look," Thompson recalls. "Oh, boy, was it! It blew me away. We told him so. And found ourselves invited to lunch -- we thought, to talk about old times -- but soon we were talking excitedly about where he was taking the series and where the character relationships could go."

Calling BSG his "dream project" and "the best job I ever had" because of both the concept of carrier pilots in space and the opportunity to work with "amazingly talented writers," Thompson also credited the actors with contributing important insights into their characters that sometimes reshapes main storylines. "Actor input is an important part -- if it's good and doesn't conflict with some other uberstory, we gleefully steal it, bend it and use it," he said.
== Overview ==
:''The crew of Galactica makes a stop at the barren Algae planet. <ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.tv.com/battlestar-galactica-2003/the-eye-of-jupiter-1/episode/822638/summary.html |title=The Eye of Jupiter }}</ref>''

: [[The Temple of Five]] is discovered, leading to a standoff between the Cylons and the Colonials over the '''Eye of Jupiter'''. Also: the Cylons bring news about Sharon's baby. - ''TV Guide''

''Logline: The possible discovery of the Eye of Jupiter on the algae planet leads to a deadly stand-off, as the Cylons and humans risk all for a chance to find the way to Earth.

While working on the [[algae planet]], Tyrol (Aaron Douglas) discovers the Temple of Five, reputed to be the home of the [[Eye of Jupiter]], which will guide the ones who discover it to Earth. His report is intercepted by the Cylons, who request a meeting with Adama (Edward James Olmos) and Laura (Mary McDonnell). Their proposal: let us have the Eye and we will let you leave unharmed. Adama's counter-proposal: make any move to take the Eye and we'll nuke the planet.

The Cylons bring another piece of news: Sharon (Grace Park) and Helo's (Tahmoh Penikett) baby is alive, but not well. Sharon is initially skeptical, but when Adama confirms that Laura hid the baby at her school, she and Helo begin to make plans to rescue her.

As the standoff continues, tensions rise in both camps. On the Cylon baseship, D'Anna's (Lucy Lawless) sense that she and Baltar (James Callis) share a destiny that might not include the others sows dissension, while on the algae planet, efforts to protect the Eye are complicated by Lee's simmering affair with Kara (Katee Sackhoff), especially since Lee (Jamie Bamber) is counting on Anders (Michael Trucco), Kara's husband, to rally the civilians to the cause. Then the Cylons launch a flight of raiders, bound for the algae planet, forcing Adama to show he's not bluffing. <ref>{{cite web|url=http://screenings.tvguide.com/programs/detail/4|title=TV Guide Exclusive }}</ref>''

== Summary ==
*A group of [[Cylon Centurion]]s use a surface-to-air missile to shoot down [[Kara Thrace|Thrace]]'s [[Raptor]], the first material loss of the [[Battle of the Algae Planet]].

== Questions ==
*Will Adama go through with his plan to nuke the planet?
*Did Starbuck survive the crash of her Raptor?
*What is the [[Eye of Jupiter]]?
*How much truth is there to Ander's claim of Kara's chronic infidelity ("You think you're the first?")?
*How will Athena and Helo knowing their child is still alive affect their relationship with Adama?
*How will Adama finding out Hera is still alive affect his relationship with Roslin?
*Is there a connection between the Temple of the Five and the five missing Cylon models?
*Who or what is "The One Whose Name Cannot Be [Told(?)]" whom the Five supposedly follow? Is this a reference to [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Jealous God|the Jealous God]]?
*What are the "sins" of the Five that the Hybrid speaks of?
*What consequences will Number Three's actions have within the Cylon society?
*What is the Fleet doing without the presence of ''Galactica''?
*Will there be further confrontations between the two "Sharon Valerii"-type [[Number Eight|Eight]] models, as seen in the passageway tirade between [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] and [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]]?
*Were the Cylons really willing to hand Baltar over to the Fleet?
*When did [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] go over to the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons']] way of thinking? In this episode she clearly doesn't seem to think of herself as human anymore like she did in "[[Downloaded]]".

== Analysis ==
*At least eighteen people perished as a result of navigating through the radiation field of the star cluster.
*This episode ends the debate whether [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] knew about [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]]'s secret plan to hide [[Hera]] ([[Downloaded]], [[Exodus, Part I]]) -- he did not know.
*[[Caprica-Six]] and [[D'Anna Biers|D'Anna]]'s dialogue indicates that they have been intimate with each other as well as with [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]].
*Coincidence (and destiny / predestination) seems to be a major theme with this episode: the humans & Cylons show up at the planet at the same time; the temple is discovered by Tyrol, son of a priest who revered this place; the planet is orbiting a star that will go nova within days; etc.
*This is the first time the Cylons use "human" names on the basestar when not speaking to Baltar. D'Anna is named by Caprica-Six and another Number Three. Cavil's name is used by D'Anna.

== Notes ==
*Writer [[Jane Espenson]] revealed that this episode was originally titled "Eye of [[Zeus]]."<ref name="espenson-2">{{cite_web|url=http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/12/11/jane-espenson-on-post-the-passage-questions/|title=TV Squad: Jane Espenson on post-The Passage questions|date=11 November 2006|accessdate=11 November 2006|last=McDuffee|first=Keith|format=|language=English}}</ref>
*This episode, whose teaser clocks in at just over 11 minutes, has the longest teaser of any episode thus far, narrowly beating out that of "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]".
*Outdoor sequences of the algae planet were filmed near Kamloops, British Columbia [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/video/index.php?cat=videoBlog&vid=46979].

== Overview ==

: ''Continuing from the events of the [[Miniseries]], [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' and [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] must avoid their [[Cylon]] pursuers, which ambush them every 33 minutes after each successful [[FTL|Jump]].''

== Summary ==

=== On ''[[Galactica]]'' ===
* The crew of battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' have been on continuous alert for some 130.35 hours, during which time the Fleet has had to make an [[FTL|FTL Jump]] every 33 minutes to escape their [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] pursuers shortly after their initial escape from [[Ragnar Anchorage]].
* Everyone in the Fleet is beginning to feel the strain – particularly [[Gaius Baltar]], who is also distracted by [[Number Six|Six’s]] repeated conversations about [[God]] having a plan for him, and also her wanting to have his children.
* Vessels in the Fleet are also beginning to feel the strain: Jump engines and their controlling computers are starting to breakdown or malfunction, requiring ''Galactica'' to linger longer and longer in the Cylon line of fire while the rest of the fleet complete their Jumps.
* Following jump number 237, [[Laura Roslin|President Roslin]] receives word from a Dr. [[Amorak]] aboard the ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'' concerning information on how the Cylons overcame Colonial defenses.
* Overhearing the conversation, Baltar is worried: he knew Amorak at the [[Defence Ministry]]. As Six points out, Amorak might have information on Baltar's complicity with the Cylon attack.
* There is insufficient time before the next Jump to bring Amorak aboard ''[[Colonial One]]'', but Roslin wants to see him directly after the Jump has been completed.
* Elsewhere, [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] is having problems accepting her new [[ECO]], [[Crashdown]], and is feeling guilty about leaving [[Karl Agathon|Karl "Helo" Agathon]] on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] to his fate.
* When the next Jump is made, the ''Olympic Carrier'', complete with Dr. Amorak and 1344 other souls, fails to appear with the rest of the Fleet. Six tries to convince Baltar that it is because God is watching over him.
* Thirty-three minutes later, the Fleet is ready to jump, but the Cylons don’t appear. Adama orders a stand-down from the immediate alert, but the Fleet is to maintain a readiness to Jump, in case the Cylons do return.
* When Baltar continues to refuse the concept of God, the ''Olympic Carrier'' reappears; Commander [[William Adama|Adama]] orders the Fleet to [[Action Stations|Condition One alert]], fearing the worst. He orders the Jump clocks reset in anticipation of the Cylons arriving.
*The [[Combat Air Patrol]] lead by [[Lee Adama]] intercepts the [[Intersun|starliner]]. Adama orders all communications with the ''Carrier'' jammed and the ''Carrier'' is ordered (through signal lamps) to remain at its current position. When the ''Carrier'' fails to heed orders not to approach the fleet, tensions rise, and a [[Radiological Alarm|radiological alarm]] reveals there is now a nuclear weapon on the liner.
*As the crisis deepens, the Cylons appear precisely 33 minutes after the return of the ''Carrier'', confirming that the ''Carrier'' was used somehow by the Cylons to track the Fleet. Adama wants to destroy the liner, but Roslin hesitates to give the order, as no one can be sure if the 1,345 people aboard the ''Carrier'' are still alive. Baltar is terrified she won't give the order for fear of Amorak's information.
*Six uses the hesitation to push Baltar into “repenting” before God. As soon as he does, Roslin gives the order to destroy the liner. Apollo and [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] (reluctantly) open fire, destroying the liner. After the Fleet makes a Jump once more, the Cylon's relentless pursuit is halted.
*A day later, everyone is living with the consequences of their actions. Only [[Billy Keikeya]] has a small nugget of good news: at some point in the proceedings, a baby was born in the Fleet.

===On Caprica===
* [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] is on the run in the rainy woodland, and has [[Wikipedia:Claymore mine|Claymore-like ordinance]] he uses to blow up pursuing [[Cylon Centurion]]s.
* Helo's six days on the run comes to an end when he is captured by the Cylons, after being distracted by the appearance of a copy of [[Number Six]], wearing a white raincoat.
*Helo is “rescued” by [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|a copy of Valerii]], who shoots Six and then leads Helo away into the woods. Helo mistakenly believes that this Valerii copy is actually the "Boomer" copy that left Caprica and returned to rescue him.

== Questions ==

*Billy reports that the number of survivors is down by 300 - some lost through death from injuries, etc., some "lost" through initial inaccurate counts, and the rest have "disappeared." How can people simply "disappear" in the fleet?
*Does Doctor Amorak truly have something on Baltar's involvement in the holocaust?
*Is Six actually in contact with other Cylons, and thus involved in the disappearance / reappearance of the ''Olympic Carrier''?
*What happened to the group of survivors [[Helo]] was left with in the [[Miniseries]]? ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Story So Far|Answer]])

== Analysis ==
*'''Why did the Cylons come "every 33 minutes"?''' Short answer: it was a number Ron Moore has stated he picked at random, with no other significance. Long answer: See the [[Numerology#33|Numerology]] article for in-depth analysis of the "mystery of 33".
*The cast actually consulted with a sleep deprivation expert before this episode, making a large effort to accurately depict the effects of sleep deprivation on their characters, and it really comes through on screen. Rather than simply yawning alot and constantly saying "wow, I'm so tired", the cast met the series' goal of realistically portraying their symptoms: they behave aggravated, they start to forget things, their minds just start "slowing down".
*With [[Number Six#Baltar's Internal Six|Baltar's internal Number Six]], three possibilities seem to suggest themselves:
**She is a creation of his own psyche; a reaction to his betrayal of his people to the Cylons. Certainly, his increasing psychosis in the episode would seem to point to this; but then, he has - like the rest - been five plus days without sleep, and some degree of paranoia is bound to result.
**She is, as she suggested in the Miniseries, created by an implanted chip in his head and possibly in communication with the Cylons. However, if this is the case, surely the Cylon hunt for the Fleet would continue despite the destruction of the ''Olympic Carrier'' - as the Cylons would be tracing the fleet through Baltar. Given the humans are to all intents and purposes "on the ropes", it seems odd that they would break off the attack when they have such a clear advantage.
***The brain scan on Baltar in "[[Home, Part II]]" dismisses the notion that a mechanical implant is in his head, although it may not be medically recognizable.
***At times through the series, Baltar's virtual Six ''claims'' that the other Cylons are totally unaware of her existence.
**Could Six be a complete download of "Six's" personality, captured at the point of destruction of Baltar's home, and now contained in his head, possibly occupying his subconscious, out of contact with her own kind, but able to fully interact with his thoughts and feelings – even manipulate his thoughts and feelings? This may suggest Baltar [[Gaius Baltar#Speculation: The Real Baltar?|could be a Cylon agent himself]].
*Why is Boomer's Raptor launched alongside Apollo's Vipers for what everyone is expecting to be an interdiction exercise against Cylon Raiders?
:* Based on events from the [[Miniseries]] and in later episodes, Raptors are occasionally used to support or augment Viper operations with strengthened [[DRADIS]] and perhaps [[Radiological Alarm|radiological]] detection. Normally, Raptors are not on [[CAP]] with Vipers and are frequently deployed alone or as a group, but the events of "[[33]]" suggest that Commander Adama wanted to ensure extra coverage with the Raptor's stronger [[Computers|avionics]] to ensure extra coverage of Cylon activity.
:* In a [[You Can't Go Home Again| later episode]] a Raptor is used for rescuing ejected pilots during combat.
*The Memorial Hallway scene continues the writers' allusion to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States to the events of the Miniseries through the use of the many memorials, the confusion in finding lost loved ones, and Dualla's amazement at the size of the memorial. (A [[Lest We Forget|picture of a Colonial soldier]] on one of the Colonies during its destruction also plays on the intense feelings felt by many Americans when they saw similar pictures of New York City firefighters at the ruins of the World Trade Center.)

== Notes ==
*This episode won the [[Awards and Honors|2005 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form]].
*When Season 1 premiered in the United States, "33" and "[[Water]]" aired back-to-back as a two hour TV event. This was also the case when [[Season 3 (2006-07)|Season 3]] first aired in the United States with the episodes "[[Occupation]]" and "[[Precipice]]".
*When the first few episodes of the series began airing on Scifi Channel, title cards were shown at the beginning of each episode, i.e. "33" or "Water" flashing in white letters on a black screen, and then the episode would begin. This stopped by mid-Season 1.
*Continuous jumping badly affects the FTL drives and management systems aboard commercial Colonial vessels, which are not as rugged as the ''Galactica's'' military-issue drives
*The Cylons FTL ability is just as highly-accurate as the FTL of the Colonials. 238 times they manage to pounce on the Colonial fleet, arriving with precise momentum and trajectory to be able to close the distance and launch an attack.
*According to [[Socinus]], there are 5,251 people in the Fleet from [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Sagittaron|Sagittaron]].
*As of "33", there are 60 civilian ships in the Fleet, but [[Continuity errors (RDM)|errors in continuity of episode events]], especially from "[[Home, Part I]]", may place this initial information in question.
*The head count of Colonial citizens at the end of the episode is 47,273.
*[[Zoic]] visual effects artists hid small signs of movement within the ''Olympic Carrier'' in close-up effect shots as something of a morbid joke. Lights in the windows appear to flicker on and off rather rapidly and when slowed down there is some kind of movement visible on the inside of the ship.
*In the DVD commentary for this episode, Ron D. Moore states that during the scene when Dualla hands Commander Adama a set of reports that he reads aloud (including fuel shortages, dozens of crewmen breaking down from nervous exhaustion, etc), Edward James Olmos ad-libbed "and ten suicides" in one take. The production team really liked the ad-lib, and thought the way Olmos acted the scene was fantastic. However, there were concerns that the network would think this would make an already ''extremely'' "dark" episode far '''too''' dark and alienate the audience during the premiere, and the line was reluctantly cut.
*At first appearance, there appears to be error with Billy's math with the [[Survivor count | survivor count]]. The episode starts with the count being 50,298. He informs Roslin this is in error by 300 = 49,998 survivors. When the ''Olympic Carrier'' is destroyed (1,345 people), he reduces the total to 47,972 – that’s a reduction of 2026, or 681 people ''more'' than listed on the ''Carrier''. However, in [[List of Deleted Scenes (RDM)#33|deleted scenes]] from this episode, Billy is actually reducing the survivor count additional times set between the beginning of the episode and the destruction of the ''Olympic Carrier''. These other deaths just occur offscreen.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''Baltar is having a vision of climbing into bed with Number Six''
:'''Six:''' You know you're not safe.
:'''Baltar:''' No, course not. The Cylons will follow us again, as they have the last two hundred and thirty seven times.
:'''Six:''' You're right, you know. There are limits. Eventually you'll make a mistake.
:'''Baltar:''' And then you'll kill us all. Yes. Yes, I know, but...not for another thirty-three minutes.

*''Addressing the bridge crew:''
:'''Colonel Tigh''': Yes, we're tired. Yes, there is no relief. Yes, the Cylons keep coming after us time after time after time. And yes, we are still expected to do our jobs!

* ''When Lee Adama and Kara Thrace are on ''Galactica's'' flight deck:''
:'''Lee Adama''': Hey, did you see the note from the XO?
:'''Kara Thrace''': I saw it. No way.
:'''Lee Adama''': Kara, everyone else--
:'''Kara Thrace''': I don't fly with stims. They fudge with your reflexes, your reaction time.
:'''Lee Adama''': Come on, Kara, give me a break. Just--
:'''Kara Thrace''': Why are we arguing about this?
:'''Lee Adama''': I have no idea.
:'''Kara Thrace''': Neither do I. You're the [[CAG]], act like one.
:'''Lee Adama''': What does that mean?
:'''Kara Thrace''': It means that you're still acting like everyone's best friend. We're not friends. You're the CAG. "Be careful out there?" Our job isn't to be careful, it's to shoot frakking [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] out of the sky. "Good Hunting" is what you say. And one of your idiot pilots is acting like a child and refusing to take her pills. So she either says "Yes, sir" and obeys a direct order, or you smack her in the mouth and drag her sorry ass to [[sickbay]] and you make her take those pills.
:(Lee and Kara both start laughing)
:'''Lee Adama''': Well, I'm glad I'm not working for you.
:'''Kara Thrace''': (laughing) Damn right you're glad.
:'''Lee Adama''': So do I have to smack you in the mouth, Lieutenant?
:'''Kara Thrace''': No sir, I'll take my pills. (takes pills from Lee) Perfect.
:'''Lee Adama''': Carry on.
:'''Kara Thrace''': (half-heartedly saluting) Yes, sir.

* ''When Commander Adama and Colonel Tigh are talking outside the [[CIC]]:''
:'''Colonel Tigh''': (grunting) Oh...a couple hours rack time does sound awfully sweet right about now...
:'''Commander Adama''': You deserve it.
:'''Colonel Tigh''': You know, the truth is, all this has me feeling...well, more alive than I have in years.
:'''Commander Adama''': You look that way too. It's good to see you without the cup in your hand.
:'''Colonel Tigh''': Ah, don't start.
:'''Commander Adama''': I know there's a whole lot of people on this ship, that wish you weren't feeling as good.
:'''Colonel Tigh''': (laughing) If the crew doesn't hate the XO, then he's not doing his job. Besides, I've gotta make the old man look good.
:'''Commander Adama''': Seriously...
:'''Colonel Tigh''': Sir?
* ''As the [[Olympic Carrier]] heads on a suicide run towards ''Galactica'', Lee Adama, Kara Thrace and Sharon Valerii are flying beside the liner:''
:'''Boomer''': (in a Raptor flying beside the ''Olympic Carrier'') We have...new orders. We are directed to...destroy the ''Olympic Carrier'', and return back to ''Galactica''.
:'''Lee Adama''': The Cylons will be here any second. If we're gonna do this, let's just do it. Starbuck, form up with me and we'll make one pass from astern.
:(Lee and Kara fall back a fair distance from the ship)
:'''Kara Thrace''': Lee, what if you're wrong? (silence) Lee, come on. Lee!
:'''Lee Adama''': Okay, fire on my mark.

=== Offical Statements: Note on [["Lest We Forget"]] ===
{{From RDM blog}}

:"It's probably been asked before, but I'm curious as to whom[sic] is in the picture in the Viper Pilot's briefing room, facing away from the camera . . . the one the pilots, including [[William Adama|Commander Adama]], touch when they enter and leave? This is touching, and is a wonderful human element to the story. So who is it?"

:There was a scene cut from [[33|"33"]] where we saw [[Laura Roslin]] being given her copy of the photo along with a card that said it was taken on the roof of the capitol building on Aerilon during the attack. The photo was inspired by the famous shot of the fire-fighters raising the flag at Ground Zero that became iconic. I thought the Colonies would have their own version of this -- a snapshot taken in the moment that becomes a symbol of the day they can never forget and of all they had lost. The photo itself is of a soldier falling to his knees (possibly shot or simply overcome by emotion) as he stands on the rooftop over looking the devastation of his city, while the Colonial flag waves at the edge of frame. The inscription below the photo on Laura's plaque reads, [["Lest We Forget"]] in itself a reference to the inscription on the watch presented to John Wayne's character in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon."

=== Comments from the Cast ===

*"Insomnia. Nobody has slept. Everyone's just coming to terms with the fact that they have lost everybody that they've loved or relate to." -- [[Jamie Bamber]], [http://scifi.com/battlestar/bts/video/mov/video_06_320.mov]

*"It was a hard episode, because, you just had to basically fall apart." -- [[Katee Sackhoff]], [http://scifi.com/battlestar/bts/video/mov/video_06_320.mov]

*"Episode 1 is extremely docu-style because the characters haven't actually slept for five days (sic) and they have been running from the Cylons for the 250th time. And it's very stressful and they're about to lose the plot completely because of sleep deprivation." -- [[Michael Rymer]], [http://scifi.com/battlestar/bts/video/mov/video_06_320.mov]

=== Excerpt from the Official Companion ===
In [[Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion]], the dedicated performance by the cast, trying to accurately and realistically depict extensive sleep deprivation on-screen, was explained:
:"''Battlestar Galactica<nowiki>'</nowiki>''s first season premiere required the show's cast members to depict their characters under extreme physical and emotional duress, as they faced sleep deprivation and the constant threat of Cylon attack. This unique and intriguing acting challenge prompted Edward James Olmos to enlist the assistance of a sleep deprivation expert, who met with the cast shortly prior to the starting of shooting. Olmos and several other cast members also restricted their sleeping paterns a few days before filming, to gain a better understanding of sleep deprivation.

:"I rested just before we actually shot the episode, because I didn't want to go on-camera exhausted," explains Olmos. "But in the week before shooting, I only had about three hours of sleep per night and I studied myself to get to know how to pay the symptoms of sleep deprivation. About two days away from shooting, I was sitting in this meeting and everyone was looking at me as I tried to make sense. I told everyone, "This is what happens when you go without sleep — you don't act funny or yawn all the time, it's more the case that your mind doesn't function correctly". The doctor later expanded on this, and pretty soon everyone was tuned in. So when we went into the episode, everyone knew exactly what they were doing, and it was beautiful to watch."" (page 46)
==="[[33]]" through "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|Hand of God]]"===
*'''Day 6:''' ''Galactica'' pursued by the Cylons for six days. The ship ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'' is discovered to be the source of the problem, it is destroyed when nuclear weapons are detected aboard ([[33]]).
*'''Day 7:''' First new child born on the ''[[Rising Star]]''. ''Pegasus'' encounters a fleet of 15 civilian ships, including ''[[Scylla]]''.
*'''Day 10:''' President Roslin makes her first official visit to ''Galactica''. During an unrep procedure, ''Galactica''’s water tanks are destroyed by sabotage from Cylon agent Sharon Valerii and the majority of its water is vented into space. ''Galactica'' commences an immediate search of the surrounding star systems for drinkable water and finds an ice moon ([[Water]]).
*'''Day 12:''' Representatives from the government led by Lee Adama visit the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' to enlist the aid of its prisoner population to help mine water from the ice moon. They find themselves embroiled in a plot by former terrorist [[Tom Zarek]] to capture the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' and demand a civil ransom from President Roslin. The stand-off ends with one prisoner killed when Colonial Marines storm the ship. Lee Adama brokers a deal with Zarek to turn the ship over to him and to convince Roslin to hold an election in exchange for peace and co-operation with the government ([[Bastille Day]]).
*'''Day 14:''' An accident on the hangar deck kills 13 pilots. Starbuck is ordered by Adama to train [[nuggets|replacements]]. Starbuck goes missing after [[Skirmish over the Red Moon|a battle with a Cylon recon force]]. ([[Act of Contrition]]).
*'''Day 15:''' Adama searches for Starbuck against the recommendation of Col. Tigh and President Roslin. Starbuck survived on the red moon of the ice planet system for over 48 hours before locating the Raider she shot down. She trains herself how to fly it then uses it to return to ''Galactica'' ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]).
*'''Day 17:''' A copy of [[Aaron Doral]] sneaks aboard the ''Galactica'', steals several blocks of [[G-4]] and G-4 detonators from a small arms locker then blows himself up near Baltar's lab. An independent tribunal is set up to investigate and focuses its attention on Galen Tyrol and Sharon Valerii. Specialist [[Socinus]] is jailed for lying under oath to protect Tryol and Adama overturns the tribunal when he feels it has become a "witch hunt" ([[Litmus]]).
*'''Day 21:''' First recollection by any of the ''[[Rising Star (RDM)|Rising Star]]'' crewmembers of giving [[Ellen Tigh]] medical assistance ("about a week" before "[[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]").
*'''Day 24:''' [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Caprica Valerii]] and [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] first make love. A copy of Number Six appears aboard the ''Galactica'' introducing herself as "[[Shelly Godfrey]]" and presents doctored evidence to Commander Adama implicating Dr. Baltar in the attack on the Colonies. When her story is debunked and evidence suggesting she may be a Cylon agent begins to mount she disappears as quickly and mysteriously as she appeared ([[Six Degrees of Separation]]).
*'''Day 25:''' A copy of [[Leoben Conoy]] surfaces on the [[Gemenon Traveler]] claiming he has hidden a nuclear device somewhere in the fleet but will not say where. Kara Thrace is brought in to interrogate him and she eventually makes him confess the bomb story was a lie. He is then thrown out an airlock on President Roslin's personal order ([[Flesh and Bone]]).
*'''Day 26:''' Ellen Tigh resumes consciousness ("a couple of days" before [[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]).
*'''Day 28:''' William Adama travels to the ''Rising Star'' and brings [[Ellen Tigh]] aboard the ''Galactica'' to reunite with Saul. Ellen later spends most of an uncomfortable dinner party with President Roslin grilling Adama on the subject of the then-fictitious Earth. When she is tested by Dr. Baltar's Cylon Detector, Baltar claims her results came back green but then later reveals to Number Six that everyone is going to be greenlit from now on reguardless of what the results say ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]).
*'''Day 36:''' With the Fleet running low on Tylium fuel, Adama begins scouting near-by systems for asteroids rich in Tylium ore. One system is found but a heavily fortified Cylon mining outpost is discovered there. ''Galactica'' engages the Cylons a [[battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] and destroys the mining base. Caprica Valerii begins showing the first signs of pregnancy and suffers morning sickness ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

*'''Day 48 - Morning:''' Grey addresses the Quorum. [[Safiya Sanne]] changes [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Picon|Picon]]'s vote to Zarek, bringing his total to 5 of 12.

*'''Day 48 - Afternoon:''' Zarek serves [[Ellen Tigh]] a drink and inquires after the whereabouts of Valance. Baltar interviewed by [[James McManus]]. Valance found dead. Tigh, Apollo and Starbuck consult with Roslin on security.
Perhaps the Quorum moved to close the nomination period early after the nomination of a strong candidate.''
Lee learns that in addtion to Karl Agathon, Thrace brought back the Caprican copy of Sharon Valerii, whereupon Lee pulls a gun on Sharon. After defusing the situation with words, Roslin orders Valerii thrown out the airlock, but relents and has her thrown into the brig instead, after hearing both Thrace and Agathon's protest.
==Season two timeline discontinuity==
:''Main article: [[Season two timeline discontinuity]]''
Based on various evidence, the end of "Resistance" can be very firmly dated to Day 54. This puts Cally's release at Day 84, and in turn means that as of "Flight of the Phoenix", Roslin was not expected to live past day 114. Corroborating this, Sharon Valerii does not appear visibly pregnant in "Pegasus".

However, in the following episode, Admiral Cain states offhandedly that it has been about six months since the fall of the colonies. This is further corroborated in "Epiphanies", which we learn takes place 189 days after the holocaust (a full 75 days longer than Roslin's most favorable prognosis). Additionally, Valerii now appears to be well into her second trimester, and elections have been put off by 75 days from their first-season projections.

There is apparently no way to reconcile this discrepancy. Even under the most liberal assumptions, the first half of the second season timeline cannot accommodate more than about three additional days.

Consequently, there is a 75-day discontinuity between the fist and second halves of season two. The second half of the season is dated from the firm dates given in "Resurrection Ship, Part I" and "Epiphanies", but be aware that dates throughout the remainder of season 2 are likely to contradict those from earlier in the series.

==Season 2.5==

===Dates not specific to episodes===
Attacks on the operation continue by the ace Cylon raider known as [[Scar (Raider)|Scar]], making it the source of a heated competition between Lt. Katraine and Cpt. Thrace.
*'''c. Abinell's husband was killed aboard the ''[[Greenleaf]]'' when the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] attacked it ten weeks ago, and she decides to exact vengeance. Lee Adama is wounded as a result of a failed rescue attempt by [[Kara Thrace]]. Sesha, Vinson, Chu, Page, two marines and [[Billy Keikeya]] are killed.

''Backdated from "The Captain's Hand" and "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I"''
Hera is adopted by [[Maya]], who will later rename the child "Isis".
*[[Caprica-Six]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Boomer]], both reincarnated on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] shortly after their respective deaths, are introduced by a copy of [[Number Three]]. The three, along with [[Samuel Anders]], are caught in an explosion set by members of the [[Caprica Resistance]]. Caprica-Six kills Three and releases Anders; Caprica-Six and Boomer resolve to persuade the Cylons to adopt a new approach in dealing with the Colonials.
''The originally aired version of this episode contained an error which placed the previous episode "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]" "10 weeks before" this one. This was corrected for the DVD release and subsequent airings.''
==Between Season 2.5 and ''The Resistance''==
*[[Nicholas Tyrol]] is born to [[Cally]] and [[Galen Tyrol]].
*[[Kara Thrace]] is forced into a marriage-type arrangement with [[Leoben Conoy]], whom she kills regularly.
''Note: It is unclear when Kara was taken, but finding her was clearly Conoy's first order of business.''
*A resistance movement is established. Its leaders are [[Saul Tigh]], [[Galen Tyrol]] and [[Samuel Anders]]. Other members include [[Jean Barolay]] and [[James Lyman|James "Jammer" Lyman]].
''Note: Samuel Anders is clearly a resistance leader by the episode "Occupation", but he is not seen during "Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance". His character background suggests that he would have been a founder or early member of the resistance, but we must also presume it took him at least some time to recover from his illness.''

==''[[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance]]''==
*'''c. Day 727 (447th day since settlement, 67th day of occupation) - Evening:''' Tyrol and Tigh have been organizing a budding resistance movement, but they find recruiting new soldiers is becoming dangerous and difficult. New Capricans are shot on the spot if weapons are found in their tents. The Cylons are also setting up a human police force to take over for the [[Cylon Centurion]]s, who are doing most of the police work.

*'''Day 728?:''' - Due to personal reasons Duck has refused to work with the resistance, much to the ire of Tyrol. A ritual for protection of the crops from blight is said in the temple. As the priestess leaves, Jean Barolay abruptly shifts the conversation to the movement of the weapons stash into the temple; Jammer strongly objects, but he is overruled by Tigh. Later in the day, Duck tells Nora his decision about joining the resistance. She is pleased that he refused Tyrol. During the night, Tigh, Tyrol, Jammer, and Barolay move the weapons into the temple disguising them.

*'''Day 729?:''' - Nora wakes Duck saying he will be late to work. She tries to convince him to go to temple after work with her. He refuses, saying he talks to the gods in his own way. Later in the day, Cally and Nora are visiting the temple. A Number Five announces that he will enter the temple with several Cylon Centurions. Several men try to block them, but the Cylons force their way in and gunfire can be seen and heard. While trying to run away Cally falls to the ground protecting her baby, but Nora is shot and killed when she tries to retrieve her bag. Afterwards Tyrol, Cally and Jammer return Nora's bag to Duck, and inform him about the death of Nora. Duck is physically sickened by the news. He becomes angry and demands to know if there were weapons in the temple. Tyrol tries to avoid the question, but Duck doesn't relent until Tyrol admits the truth. At that point, Duck orders them out of his tent.

*'''Day 732?:''' - Tigh, Barolay, and Jammer discuss the effects of the attack, which has brought about positive effects for the resistance. The general population has started to side with the resistance and 1,000 people protested outside Colonial One over the attack on the temple. Since the attack, recruitment has become easier with 150 Colonials signing up. Tigh thinks that this was a good deal because the loss of a few weapons was worth the propaganda victory. However, Jammer is upset that the loss of 10 lives was not worth it. Tigh comes down hard on Jammer, stating that people die in war, nice people, and the resistance has no room for crybabies.

*'''Day 73_?:''' - Tyrol and Tigh discuss the arrest of Jammer by the Cylons. Tyrol insists that Jammer won't reveal the work of the resistance. Jammer is imprisoned in a Cylon detention center and is visited by a Number Five. Number Five proposes to Jammer that the massacre at the temple may have been planned by the Resistance. Number Five offers Jammer the chance to stop further bloodshed by informing him of potentially life-threatening actions by the Resistance. Jammer balks at becoming a traitor to the Resistance, but accepts a key card which will let him enter the [[New Caprica Detention Center|detention center]] to report any secret plans of the Resistance.

*'''c. Day 795 - evening''': Arguably, the introductory scene with Roslin in a cell takes place during the evening on the same day that the bombing occurred. An announcment that a curfew is in effect suggests that the time is between 1900 and 2200, since that is customarily when militaries impose cufews. *'''c. Day 797''': Starbuck apologizes to Kasey and the Number Three visits the [[Dodona Selloi|Oracle]]. The resistance's final planning and coordination is not shown but must take the entire day--similarly, what are the Cylons doing? Certainly they must be doing ''something'' the day after their execution fails and all the resistance members are free?--the next scene on New Caprica after the Oracle's scene is the Number Three talking to [[Dr. Cottle]] in the evening.
*'''c. Day 798 - morning & midday''': The Cavil killed by Tyrol's ambush returns to ''[[Colonial One]],'' introducing the question of whether it takes two days to [[Resurrection (RDM)|download]]. Anders talks with Roslin about Hera's protection, Agathon infiltrates into the facility and obtains the launch keys. Ellen Tigh is exposed. Admiral Adama gives "the speech."

*'''c. Day 798 - afternoon''': Ellen Tigh voices her final oratory, and the resistance's bombs initiate the [[Battle of New Caprica]], soon joined by the battlestars. ''Galactica'' afterward conducts a link-up with other ships, involving many emotional reunions, and Admiral Adama finally shaves.

*'''c. Day 800 (Day 3 of the Second Exodus)''' - James "Jammer" Lyman, and 12 others before him are executed by [[The Circle]] for being Cylon collaborators.
** ''Galactica''’s air group runs exercises with the Viper pilots.
** Lee Adama has lost all of the weight he put on in the year between the colonization of [[New Caprica]] and the Second Exodus.
** Felix Gaeta meets with President Roslin and Admiral Adama to discuss Baltar's research on the road to [[Earth]]. Gaeta's research shows they are coming close to a way point described in the Book of Pythia, the [[Lion's Head Nebula]].
** Baltar returns to the basestar and discusses what he saw with Caprica-Six and Three. He leaves out the part about the 13th Colony probe, but his omission is uncovered when Caprica sorts through the images he brought back and spots the probe.

** The boarding party and some Cylon prisoners are en route back to Galactica when the basestar self-destructs.
** Galactica quarantines the boarding party and prisoners while Dr. Cottle finds out if the virus affects humans. His investigation identifies a virus that can be treated, but not cured for Cylons.
==Analysis of Colonial Dates==

In "[[Hero]]", [[William Adama]]'s [[:Image:Dossier.png |dossier]] can be seen. Here are a list of dates from Adama's past that the dossier contains:

:H5/21290       Birth of William Adama
:D6/21311	First commission, Battlestar Galactica, fighter squadron<br />
:E4/21312	Commendation for shooting down Cylon fighter in first combat mission.<br />
:D5/21314	Mustered out of service post-armistice<br />
:R6/21317	Served as Deck Hand in merchant fleet and as common […] aboard inter-colony tramp freighters<br />
:D1/21331	Recomissioned to Fleet<br />
:D6/21337	Major: Battlestar [[Atlantia (RDM)|Atlantia]]<br />
:R8/21341	Executive Officer: Battlestar [[Columbia (RDM)|Columbia]]<br />
:C2/21345	Commander: Battlestar [[Valkyrie]]<br />
:C2/21348	Commander: Battlestar Galactica

This provides some interesting information. The fields in the format X#/##### appear to be dates, with the five-digit string following the solidus apparently corresponding to the year.<br />
The following can be deduced from this document:
* This episode marks the 45th anniversary of Adama's commissioning, which puts it in the year 21356, and makes Adama 66 years old.
* Adama spent three years in between being mustered out and finding a job on a tramp freighter. We may speculate that it was during this time that his relationship with first wife [[Caroline Adama|Caroline]] deteriorated.
* Adama spent a total of 14 years serving in the merchant fleet.
* Adama met Tigh roughly 30 years ago ([[Torn]]). That would be 21326, which correctly puts it in the middle of Adama's merchant fleet service.
* Adama was a major by the time he arranged for Tigh to be reinstated in the fleet ([[Scattered]]), which means that at least six years passed in between Adama's recomissioning and Tigh's.
* Ronald Moore stated in his [[Podcast:Scattered|podcast for "Scattered"]] that the flashback scenes in [[Scattered|that episode]] took place 20 years before that episode, or in 21334. In fact, they appear to span at least an eleven-year period between 21326 (Adama and Tigh's first meeting) to 21337 (Adama's promotion to Major).
* The first [[Colonial Day (holiday)|Colonial Day]], marking the unification of the Colonies, was probably in 21302. The one celebrated in "[[Colonial Day]]" was the 52nd, and it is now two years later.

If the five-digit string following the solidus is in fact the year, as seems inescapable based on the above, the letter-digit sequence before it must indicate the position in the year. There are 260 unique letter-digit sequences of that format, which may indicate a shorter year in the Colonial calendar (a year of twenty-six ten-day weeks?) However, what has been revealed about Colonial timekeeping is too incomplete to draw any conclusions.

It is astonishing to learn that the Colonials have (or believe they have) over 21,000 years of recorded history. By comparison, Pythia was said to have recorded her prophecies 3,600 years ago ([[The Hand of God]]) and the exodus from [[Kobol]] took place just 2,000 years ago. On [[Earth]], Human civilization is only about 6,000 years old.
*We don't know whether the '2' is a base-10 digit. It could signify, for example, the second era of humanity (the first being the time on Kobol).

Adama's [[:Image:3x8-Hero-ResignationLetter.jpg | resignation letter]] at the end of the episode appears to be dated in an entirely different format. It's difficult to read clearly, but it appears to be dated "27/89/9923".

== Notes ==

*The above day listings use a simplistic calendar system with 30 day months and no leap years. The colonial calendar may be more sophisticated.
*The date of Valerii and Agathon's child is speculated from the events in [[Season 1]] and during the events of "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]", assuming that the [[Cylon agent]]s share the same gestation period that humans do, and that the birth of their hybrid daughter is not premature.
**Date of Hera's birth is now confirmed at Day 270.
*Later episodes in "Season 2.5" such as "Resurrection Ship, Part I" and "Epiphanies" state clearly that "Pegasus" and the episodes immediately following it take place six months after the Cylon Attack. Ron D. Moore did state that it took Tyrol "weeks" to construct the Blackbird and a large amount of time passes in this episode as a result. ''BattlestarWiki'' originally assumed this meant at most 2-4 weeks. However, the only plausible way that Pegasus and Resurrection Ship, Part I can take place six months after the attack is if "Flight of the Phoenix" actually lasted''' three months '''from beginning to end. Roslin was told in this episode that her cancer had accelerated, and she had only one month to live. As Cally's "welcome back" party happened earlier in the episode, when she was released from the brig around Day 86, a considerable period of time (several weeks at least) pass between these two scenes.

:''This article discusses the religion of the Colonies as seen in the [[Re-imagined Series]]. For summary information on the Kobollian religion from the [[Original Series]], see [[Kobollian Faith]].''

{{RDM twelve colonies series}}

The '''religion of the Twelve Colonies''', which the various characters of ''Battlestar Galactica'' practice to greater or lesser extent, is a polytheistic faith shared with real-life [[Wikipedia:Greek mythology|Greek mythology]], with a strong emphasis on the philosophy of [[Wikipedia:Eternal return|eternal return]].

==Origin==
There is substantial circumstantial evidence that people of Kobol ''originated'' from the planet [[Earth]], and it is also known that one of the thirteen tribes later returned there. The similarity in beliefs of the Colonials and ancient real-world Earth Greco/Roman mythology is probably not coincidental, although it is not yet clear which gave rise to the other. See [[History of the Twelve Colonies]] and [[Sacred Scrolls]] for a more detailed analysis.

In the burial scene of the [[Miniseries]], Adama states "Life here began out there,<ref>This phrase is an homage to the [[Original Series]], where each episode began with this phrase in a voice-over introduction.</ref>" reminding the assembly that this was the first line of the Sacred Scrolls, told to them by the Lords Of Kobol uncounted centuries ago.

==Belief==

===The Lords of Kobol===

Colonial religion is centered on the Lords of Kobol, analogous to the [[Greek Gods]]. In the Re-imagined Series, seven Lords of Kobol have been positively identified:

* [[Zeus]] - The leader of the gods. [[Tom Zarek]] has twice referred to [[William Adama|Commander Adama]] as "Zeus" ([[Bastille Day]], [[The Farm]]).
* [[Apollo, Lord of Kobol|Apollo]] - Zeus' son, said to be the god of the hunt and of healing ([[Bastille Day]]).
* [[Ares]] - The god of war. The [[Nicholas Tyrol|infant son]] of [[Cally]] and [[Galen Tyrol]] is [[dedication ceremony|dedicated]] to this Lord of Kobol ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance|The Resistance, Episode 10]]).
* [[Artemis]] - Twin sister of Apollo, goddess of the hunt. [[Kara Thrace]] prays often to this lord ([[Flesh and Bone]]) ([[Flesh and Bone]])
* [[Aphrodite]] - The goddess of love and sexuality. Kara Thrace prays often to this lord ([[Flesh and Bone]])
* [[Athena, Lord of Kobol|Athena]] - This lord committed suicide "out of despair over the exodus of the thirteen tribes" ([[Home, Part II]]). Her [[Tomb of Athena|tomb]] holds a map to [[Earth]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).
* [[Hera, Lord of Kobol|Hera]] - Wife and sister of Zeus. A [[Gates of Hera|mountain ridge]] on Kobol is named after her ([[Home, Part II]]), and the [[Hera|first Cylon/human hybrid child]] is named for this lord ([[Downloaded]])

Curiously, [[Laura Roslin]] mentions that the 134th day of the Cylon occupation of [[New Caprica]] was Mars Day ([[Occupation]]), suggesting that Ares may also be called by his alternate Roman pantheon's name.

==== Paradise Lost ====

According to the [[Sacred Scrolls]], the gods once shared a paradise-like existence with the people of [[Kobol]]. Later circumstances forced the exodus of the human population of Kobol to [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|the Twelve Colonies]] and [[Earth]], and lead to Athena's suicide. See [[History of the Twelve Colonies]] for more.

The existence of the Lords of Kobol is attested to by the survival of numerous artifacts, including the [[Arrow of Apollo]], the [[Tomb of Athena]] and the [[Gates of Hera]]. However, although she accepts their historicity, [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], a [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]], has called their divinity into question.<ref>There is a notion in fan circles that there are twelve lords of Kobol, by analogy to the twelve Cylon models, twelve Colonies, and perhaps the [[Wikipedia:Twelve Olympians|Twelve Olympians]] of Greek mythology. A post from [[Ron D. Moore]]'s blog [http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/03/index.html#a000023 on March 12, 2005] loosely alludes on this coincidence, but further official sourcing has not been revealed.</ref>

====The Jealous God====

[[Elosha]] states that the exodus from Kobol was precipitated when "one jealous god began to desire that he be elevated above all the other gods, and the war on Kobol began."<ref>From a [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/episodes/season01/112/mov/bsg_del_112_regret.mov deleted scene] cut from the episode "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]."</ref>

====The Path of Olympus====

[[Tom Zarek]] conveys to [[Laura Roslin]] and members of her command staff of [[Laura Roslin faction|factioners]] the news that Commander [[William Adama]] had resumed command of ''[[Galactica]]'' after the attempt on his life by saying: "Zeus has returned to '''Olympus''' " ([[The Farm]]).

In Greek mythology, the home of the gods on Earth resided high atop Greece's highest mountain, Mount Olympus, at a time where access to the mountain summit would be almost impossible with the inhabitants' technology of that age. By Zarek's comment we can infer that Colonial religion appears to acknowledge the existence of a place called Olympus. It cannot yet be determined, however, if Olympus was thought of as the residence of the gods at a specific physical or ''metaphysical'' location of Kobol, as there has been no mention of Olympus elsewhere in the series. If Olympus is a metaphysical locale, this may contradict [[Elosha]]'s comment that the gods and man lived on Kobol together in harmony.

===Other Mythological Names in Colonial Culture===

Various items have been identified which are apparently named after other gods and legendary figures, although these have not been explicitly identified as Lords of Kobol.

* ''[[Triton]]'' - ([[Miniseries]]) - The namesake of a battlestar lost in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]].
* ''[[Atlantia]]'' - ([[Miniseries]]) - The name of a [[Wikipedia:Hamadryad|hamadryad]], a form of nymph. Namesake of another battlestar lost in the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. Could also be a reference to the lengend of Atlantis, written by Plato.
* ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' - A legendary horse and namesake of Admiral [[Helena Cain]]'s [[Mercury class battlestar]].
* ''[[Zephyr]]'' - ([[Fragged]]) - A ship in [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] is named after this god.
* ''[[Mercury]]'' - The lead ship of the [[Mercury class battlestar|Mercury class]], apparently named for the Roman version of the Greek god [[Wikipedia:Hermes|Hermes]].
* ''[[Valkyrie]]'' - ([[Hero]]) - [[William Adama]]'s command immediately prior to the ''Galactica'', a reference to [[Wikipedia:Norse mythology|Norse mythology]].
* Pluto - Namesake of the element [[Wikipedia:Plutonium|Plutonium]] mentioned in the episode "[[Bastille Day]]", and Roman version of the Greek god Hades.
* Pythia - An oracle who's prophetic writings relate to the events of ''Battlestar''. The Pythia was the name for the oracle at Delphi in Greece.
* ''[[Persephone]]'' - A ship mentioned in the Fleet ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). A goddess of the underworld has this name in Earth Greek mythology.

===The Cycle of Time===

''"All this has happened before, and all this will happen again."''

According to [[Gaius Baltar]], this line from the Pythian Prophesy is very well known ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]). [[Laura Roslin]] later expands on it, reminding [[Kara Thrace]],

:"If you believe in the gods, then you believe in the cycle of time that we are all playing our parts in a story that is told again, and again, and again throughout eternity" ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

Various events throughout the series have led some characters to believe that they are playing out another turn of this cycle<ref>The notion of a circular progression of time (also known as [[Wikipedia:eternal return|eternal return]] or eternal recurrence) is a common theme in other faiths, particularly [[Wikipedia:Maya#Religion|Mayan]] mythology and is a cornerstone of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Moreover, [[Wikipedia:Stoic|Stoic]] philosophy did believe in the concept of ekpyrosis, the fire which consumes the old world and signals the birth of a new world, identical to the old, for a recurring cycle of birth, death and rebirth.</ref>. See [[Sacred Scrolls]] for more detailed analysis.

===Sanctity of Life===

According to the Sacred Scrolls, abortion is "an abomination in the eyes of the Gods". The more fundamentalist [[Gemenon]]s strictly adhere to this commandment, however the more secular Colonies such as Caprica apparently do not follow this as strictly: officially, Colonies-wide Federal law guaranteed a woman the right to an abortion, at least at the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]] ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

==Individual Practice==

The Colonials display a wide spectrum of religious practice, ranging from [[Billy Keikeya]]'s atheism ([[Home, Part II]], [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/episodes/season02/207/deleted4.html cut scene]) to Corporal [[Venner]]'s literalistic readings of the Sacred Scrolls.

===[[Temple]]===
While not seen in season 1, the worship sites known as temples have appeared on [[New Caprica]]. Temples may have been more elaborate places on the Twelve Colonies, but the spaceborne remnants of humanity presumably use any space they can find on their ships to form a basic temple. As seen on [[New Caprica]], a basic temple may consist of a simple altar with candles, idols of the Lords of Kobol, and what meager offerings the Colonials can give as a tithe ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance]]).

The temple on New Caprica was known as the Temple of Artemis ([[Collaborators]]), suggesting that temples are named after a lord or lords.
<br clear="both">

===Dress===
As seen by the various [[Laura Roslin faction|separatists]] orbiting [[Kobol]] in "[[Home, Part I]]," it appears that many Colonials have clothing that suggests a religious deference. In the scene, one older, white-bearded gentleman is dressed in simple colored robes and a round, flat head covering that may remind viewers of the tradition dress of Hasidic Jews, Islamic clerics, or Eastern Orthodox practicianers of the real-world Earth. Other distinctive dress styles of other characters in the scene increase the sense of the dedication of religion in the Gemenese people (which appeared to comprise the majority of Roslin's separatists).

The [[oracle]] [[Dodona Selloi]] dressed in a turban and robes, suggesting her role in Colonial society or its religious hierachy.
<br clear="both">

===Idols===
<div style="float:left; margin-right:1em;">[[Image:Idols.jpg|100px]]</div>
At the end of the episode "[[Flesh and Bone]]," Kara Thrace, a devotee of Artemis and Aphrodite (as stated by [[Leoben Conoy]] in the same episode), prays to them on Conoy's behalf using figurines that bear a similarity to classic representations of Artemis and Athena. Artemis is depicted with her bow and arrow, and Athena with her helmet of war.
<br clear="both">

===Rosaries===
<div style="float:left; margin-right:1em;">[[Image:Rosary.jpg|100px]]</div>
When Roslin begins to suffer from Chamalla withdrawal in "[[Fragged]]," Corporal [[Venner]], a fundamentalist from [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Gemenon|Gemenon]], anxiously clutches a set of white prayer beads.
<br clear="both">
===Group prayer===
<div style="float:left; margin-right:1em;">[[Image:The_Farm-Group_Worship.jpg|100px]]</div>
Some prisoners on the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' seeking rehabilitation have turned to group prayer. In the episode "[[The Farm]]", they greet Laura Roslin as a prophet and she provides them with a blessing.

Priestess [[Elosha]] sings a group prayer in the service for the dead at the conclusion of the [[Miniseries]]. Curiously, the language she sings is Sanskrit, a classical language of real-world Earth's Hindu/Indian peoples. More about the verses that she sings and their meaning can be found in the [[Language in the Twelve Colonies#Liturgy|Language in the Twelve Colonies]] article.''<br clear="both">

===Artifacts===
<div style="float:left; margin-right:1em;">[[Image:Bsg-arrow-apollo.jpg|75px]]</div>
Despite Gemenon's fundamentalist climate, the city of [[Delphi]] on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]] was apparently of a mind to store an important religious artifact, the [[Arrow of Apollo]], in a [[Delphi Museum of the Colonies|museum]], rather than a devotional institution.
<br clear="both">

==The Clergy==

The separation of church and state is less rigorous in the Colonies than in the contemporary United States. Laura Roslin [[Case Orange|is sworn into the presidency]] by a ''priest'', [[Elosha]], who continues on in an advisory capacity within Roslin's administration. Priests also preside over military funerals, without regard for the beliefs of the deceased. That this is a matter of course is perhaps indicative of the religious homogeneity of the Colonies (unlike the religious heterogeneity of real-life Earth and the presence of representatives and followers of different religions in the armed forces of various nations on Earth).

Priests in the Twelve Colonies are apparently not required to practice celibacy, as in some Christian denominations. In the episode "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]," Chief [[Galen Tyrol]] states that his father was a priest and his mother an oracle.

According to Billy Keikeya, some priests use the [[Chamalla]] plant for its hallucinogenic properties. The prescient dreams it imparted to Laura Roslin may imply the use of something similar by [[Pythia]], an ancient prophet.

The term ''Brother'' is used as a title for members of the clergy, although it is not fully apparent whether this is used in the real-world Earth's common usage as the title of a [[Wikipedia:Monk|monk]]. As with priests, a brother offers consultation and leads prayer. The only instance of this clergy in the series, as of the end of season 2, is Brother [[Cavil]], who offers guidance to Chief Tyrol. Cavil, however, is revealed as a [[Cylon agent]] some time later. Because of Cavil's nature, there may be doubt as to whether Cavil is a useful example of the work of a brother in Colonial religion.

As with Brothers in the clergy, there are ''Sisters'' as well. Sister [[Tivenan]] is briefly seen tending to business in the temple on [[New Caprica]], guiding prayer and officiating a [[dedication ceremony]] for the [[Nicholas Tyrol|newborn son]] of [[Galen Tyrol|Galen]] and [[Cally Tyrol]] ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance]]). It is possible that Brothers and Sisters may be lay clergy (unlike priests and oracles).

Other than the works of Pythia and the mention of Chief Tyrol's mother, there is little information as to the functions of an ''[[oracle]]''. [[Selloi]] is the only oracle seen in the Re-imagined Series. She confirms the dreams of a copy of [[Number Three]] and the existance of [[Hera]]. It is not clear if Selloi was sitting in a tent designated as a temple, but there were numerous ornate or curious inscriptions surrounding and inside her tent that suggest the significance of the oracle's tent or her presence.

== Cylon Interpretations ==

Many Cylon agents show a strict, firm belief in a monotheistic [[God]]. When agents such as Leoben Conoy, Cavil, and [[Sharon Agathon|Caprica-Valerii]] begin talking of Cylon beliefs, they are ridiculed and threatened with death. They refer to the Lords of Kobol as "false idols." They also claim to have more insight into Colonial religion than the Colonials themselves, as shown by Caprica-Valerii in "[[Home, Part II]]."

However, a connection between the Cylon God and the Lords of Kobol may exist. In "[[Exodus, Part I]]," an [[Selloi|oracle]] tells [[Number Three]] (a [[Cylon agent]] who has a ''dream'' of the oracle's tent and of holding the believed-dead hybrid child [[Hera]]) that she has a message from the one that Number Three worships. How would an oracle of the Lords of Kobol be able to hear the messages of the Cylon god?

One possibility involves the fates of the Lords of Kobol. If a Kobollian god(s) was separated from the others (per [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Jealous God|the deleted scene about a jealous god]]), could that deity have influenced the Cylons later, compelling them to deny the existence of the other Lords? The Olympian gods had many enemies, including the ones they deposed, the [[Wikipedia: Titan (mythology)|titans]]. While the notion of a fallen Lord is speculative in the Re-imagined Series, there is already a parallel series of characters from the [[Original Series]]: The [[Beings of Light]] and their fallen member, [[Iblis]].
The '''Fall of the Twelve Colonies''' (also called the '''Cylon Attack''' or '''Cylon Holocaust''') is a devastating, genocidal attack which marks renewed conflict between the humans of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol and their robotic Cylon creations, after a cessation of contact between the two, for forty years.

The Cylons soften up the Twelve Colonies for attack by infiltrating their military and civilian society with new [[Cylon agent|human-appearing models]] of Cylon. One such copy, [[Caprica-Six|Number Six]], seduces the brilliant Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]], fooling him into contract work that gives her access to the [[Colonial Defense Mainframe]]. Six's work compromises Baltar's [[Command Navigation Program]], writing in many programmer [[backdoor]]s.

After Baltar's CNP is sufficiently distributed throughout the [[Colonial Fleet]], the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] return from their [[Cylon War|forty-year exile]] with a vengeance. The backdoors in the CNP enable the Cylons to use various electronic attacks that completely bypass Colonial electronic defenses<ref>Contrary to popular opinion, the Cylons did ''not'' transmit a virus through the CNP, but could electronically command any CNP-equipped ship to shut itself down.</ref>.

Entire Viper squadrons lose power upon engaging the enemy, while the Cylons are able to virtually shut down the Colonial Defense network "without firing a shot." The great battlestars suffer an abnormally-high number of "equipment malfunctions," up to and including total power loss. Cylon infiltration of Colonial systems, when combined with the "complete surprise" they achieve, enable them to sweep the Colonial Fleet aside with minimal losses.

Battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', approximately 300 million miles from Caprica<ref>See [[Science in the Re-imagined Series]] for this calculation, based on data from the Miniseries.</ref> is the only Colonial ship unaffected by the Cylon's computer infiltration as its computer systems were never networked, and as such, could not use the network-dependent CNP. This anti-infiltration policy, used in the First Cylon War, was maintained by all of ''Galactica's'' commanders, including [[William Adama]], through peacetime and despite the advances in Colonial technology.

The Cylons proceed to bombard each of the Twelve Colonies' population and strategic centers with nuclear bombs, including [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. The attack succeeds beyond even the Cylons' most optimistic projections ([[Downloaded]]).

[[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Picon|Picon]] [[Fleet Headquarters]] is destroyed in the opening wave of the attack, as are 30 battlestars<ref>According to Kara Thrace in the Miniseries, the number of battlestars lost to this point was "a quarter of the Fleet."</ref>. Admiral [[Nagala]] is reported to have taken command of the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]] aboard battlestar ''[[Atlantia (RDM)|Atlantia]]''.

On news of the attack, to protect its people as well as for military readiness, the Colonial [[Government]] orders an full stop on hundreds of civilian vessels in the solar system, leaving them stranded in space around the various colonies.

While the primary fight against the Cylons centers around the orbit of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Virgon|Virgon]], according to a tactical plot of all ships in the solar system by Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]], ''Galactica'' itself prepares for possible incoming enemies, despite two major problems. First, ''Galactica'' had earlier destroyed its own large munitions as part of its decommissioning ceremony<ref>This event occurs in a deleted scene of the Miniseries.</ref>. Second, the battlestar had plenty of pilots, but few Vipers left to fly. Its last Viper Mark VII squadron left the battlestar after the decommissioning ceremonies and are soon destroyed in a Cylon attack.

Fortunately, the battlestar held 40 [[Viper Mark II]]s onboard as part of its recent decommissioning ceremony and [[Galactica Museum|expected conversion into a museum]]. These Vipers were an old but robust design that were resistant to infiltration and were never equipped to use the Command Navigation Program that doomed other Colonial fighters.

''Galactica'' re-arms and deploys the fighters, repelling several attacking squadrons of [[Cylon Raider]]s in her first sortie of the new war. The battlestar survives a direct hit from a Cylon tactical nuclear warhead, but not without a loss of 85 of its ship's crew in the port [[flight pod]] when damage to the fire suppression system necessitated the venting of the pod's atmosphere to prevent the battlestar's fuel lines from igniting and destroying the ship.

''Galactica'' soon receives word that battlestar ''Atlantia'', as well as many more battlestars, are lost in the fighting. Commander Adama assumes command of whatever was left of the Colonial military fleet, and sends a [[wireless]] transmission to any surviving Colonial forces to rendezvous at [[Ragnar Anchorage]] to prepare for counterattack.

Ragnar Station also held desperately needed munitions for the battlestar's point-defense batteries and more ammo for her fighters. ''Galactica'' successfully [[FTL|Jumps]] to Ragnar, skipping past the bulk of the Cylon fleet that stood in her way near Virgon.

After Picon was nuked, the Colonial [[Government]], headed by President [[Richard Adar]], broadcast an unconditional surrender, which the Cylons completely ignore. President Adar and all senior Colonial government officials, save for spacebound Secretary of Education [[Laura Roslin]], are presumed killed or missing. The [[Case Orange]] contingency mechanism activates to seek out any remaining government officials, a signal of which only Roslin apparently acknowledges. Sworn in on the government-chartered passenger liner ''[[Colonial Heavy 798]]'', Roslin becomes the new President of the Twelve Colonies.

Roslin immediately begins locating other stranded Colonial civilian and military vessels to form a caravan. Roslin's caravan efforts also retrieve at least three Viper Mark VII fighters and finds Lt. [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] and her [[Raptor]], the only survivor of ''Galactica's'' last fighter squadron. Valerii is tasked with and successfully locates additional civilian craft before a Cylon Raider scout finds the convoy.

Fearing imminent attack but unable to rescue any passengers from the convoy's [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight]] ships in time, Roslin orders the FTL-capable ships to Jump to Ragnar and to ''Galactica's'' safety. The sublight ships and their passengers are destroyed by at least six Raiders armed with nuclear missiles.

''Galactica'' is not the only battlestar to escape the attacks. An attack at the Fleet Shipyards at Scorpia destroys two battlestars, but the Battlestar [[Pegasus (RDM)|''Pegasus'']], only partially operational at the time, [[Fall of the Scorpian Fleet Shipyards|manages to escape]].
