Paul Campbell (born June 22, 1979) is an Canadian actor who portrayed Billy Keikeya in the the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.

Overview
Born in Vancouver and raised in nearby White Rock, Campbell spent most of his younger life wanting to be a carpenter, most likely due to the influences of his handy father and grandfather. And, despite a lingering love of acting fostered by performing in a high-school play, Campbell eventually did become a carpenter, framing houses for four years. But "after one too many wood splinters," he enrolled in the Capilano College theater program.

During one of his last performances at the college, a small role in a production of Cinderella, Campbell was spotted and later signed on by a Vancouver talent manager. He has since been featured in several TV projects, including The Dead Zone for USA Network, John Doe, Black Sash and Andromeda (recurring as Lt. Bowlus). His films include The Perfect Score and a lead role in the recently wrapped Canadian independent feature Ill-Fated.

Leaving Battlestar Galactica
In an April 2006 interview, Campbell spoke about his departure from the series:

:"It was kind of my choice in a way. I was kind of given an ultimatum eventually because in between the end of season one and the beginning of season two I had actually gone to LA and booked a pilot. Because Battlestar production didn’t have me under contract, I was free to go and do that. And it was their loss if the show got picked up and I wasn’t able to come back for season two. I think that was a problem they had with a few of the cast members, that everyone was a free agent after season 1, and I think that scared them a little bit. They could have potentially lost half their cast after season 1, and I think after that, they pretty much ended up signing everyone to a contract. But I’d already been cast in another show and decided to go off on my own and see if it worked. As it turned out it didn’t work, and I ended up having a two episode hiatus after episode 4. I was gone for 5 and 6, then came back for Home Pt. 1, I think it was. Or Home Pt 2, I came back for. So after that kind of gave me the ultimatum and said sign a contract for 5 years, or we kind of need to go our separate ways. And I kind of put it off and put it off, then eventually they just said “Look, we can tell your (sic) not really committed to the show, and we can’t write story lines. So we’ve decided to kill the character. It wasn’t really a surprise, but I wasn’t expecting it to happen when it did. But I certainly wasn’t surprised that they had to do that."

Laura Roslin is an unmarried woman with some 20 years of political experience. She serves as Secretary of Education for the Colonial Government at the time of the Cylon attack, later becoming president of the Twelve Colonies after the Cylon attack.
<br/><br/>

Background
*Roslin, a former teacher, worked with Richard Adar when he was a mayor. Over the years, she herself has risen in political rank to the office of Secretary of Education.
*Adar, a married man, and Roslin are in a sexual affair during the events of a teachers strike that she is trying to mediate, to Adar's objection.
*Roslin learns that she, as did her mother, has breast cancer. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is grim, as the cancer has already spread.
*Roslin sat in the Government Plaza after her doctor's appointment, where she saw Gaius Baltar, the famous scientist, walking and kissing an attractive blonde, but pays it little attention.
*Roslin successfully resolves the teachers strike crisis, but Adar vehemently disagrees with her method, and asks for her resignation. She asks him to defer the matter until she returns from the decommissioning ceremonies on battlestar Galactica.
*Despite being thrust into the role of President in highly unusual and stressful circumstances, Laura Roslin initially proves herself both tough and capable within the role. Initially in awe of Commander Adama, and worrying that he didn't hold her in high regard (Water), she quickly overcomes her doubts and fears to be able to make the required decisions at the right time, and also stand up to Adama himself (You Can't Go Home Again). She is always prepared to put the safety and destiny of the Fleet first, no matter what the cost of her actions ("Flesh and Bone," "Home, Part I," "Home, Part II," "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II") while remembering her limitations and fears.

Character History at a Glance
*Roslin is aboard the Colonial government cruiser Colonial Heavy 798, having just attended the decommissioning ceremonies for the battlestar Galactica, when the information on the Cylon attack leaks through wireless.
*Roslin attempts to serve as the government's representative to aid the ship's pilot in gaining more information. She manages to speak with one fellow official over wireless and hears the devastating news.
*The Case Orange automated beacon response assigns Roslin the role of President after Adar and other high-level government officials are dead or incapacitated.
*In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Roslin undertakes a rescue mission, using the now-renamed Colonial One to round-up all vessels that escape destruction and gathers as many survivors as possible together, hoping to save the remnants of humanity from total annihilation.
*Roslin successfully persuades Galactica commander William Adama away from his original intention of mounting a counter-attack against the Cylons, and towards helping the new civilan fleet make its escape from occupied Colonial space.
*Since the exodus, Roslin establishes a fledgling civilian government within the Fleet, agrees to abide by civil law regarding her interim term of office, and reestabishes a new Quorum of Twelve.
*Roslin and Commander Adama begin their leadership together under an uneasy understanding. Where she is responsible for all civil leadership issues among the surviving Colonials, Adama is responsible for all military decisions (Miniseries). However, the dividing line is not always clear between the two leaders.
*Roslin chooses chamalla extract as an alternative to diloxin, remembering her mother's malaise with that treatment.
* Her illness remains a secret until she relates her Chamalla-induced visions of Kobol to priest Elosha, who recognizes them as those prophesized by Pythia, where a dying leader will find the path to Earth. After research, she determines that she may be able to substantiate Commander Adama's fictitious knowledge of the location of Earth with a true bearing to the world using ancient Colonial history.
*Roslin convinces Lt. Thrace to use the captured Cylon Raider to return to Caprica in search of the Arrow of Apollo.
*Infuriated with Roslin's countermanding and with her refusal to resign as President, Commander Adama terminates her Presidency and stages a military coup. Despite the intervention of Lee Adama, Roslin is arrested and incarcerated aboard Galactica (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). With Vice President Baltar missing on the surface of Kobol, this effectively leaves the Fleet without any form of civil leadership, a situation worsened by an assassination attempt on William Adama himself immediately following Roslin's arrest (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II).
*From her cell, Roslin eventually tells the Quorum of Twelve, many of whom are Gemenon, of her role in the Sacred Scrolls, and begins to gain significant underground civilian support for her cause.
*Roslin escapes Galactica and, with the help of rival Tom Zarek, convinces over a third of the fleet to join her in the search for the Tomb. Roslin's ability to lead and command becomes stronger throughout this time, able to keep Zarek's ambitions at bay and deliver decisions faster than before.
*With the recovered Arrow, Roslin heads an hazardous expedition on Kobol to find the Tomb, with the aid of a second copy of Sharon Valerii and priest Elosha.
*The recovered Commander Adama gains refreshed insight on the need for the Fleet to stay united, and leaves to find Roslin's expedition on the surface of Kobol (Home, Part II).
*During the Kobol expedition, Elosha is killed. Roslin takes Elosha's blood-spattered copy of the Sacred Scrolls to guide her and to remember her friend.
*Commander Adama greets Roslin warmly on his arrival at her camp on Kobol. The two leaders have a heart-to-heart talk about her rebellion, which Adama forgives. Roslin thanks Adama, calling him "Bill" casually, though she notes that she didn't require permission for what she had to do. Roslin worries that, with talk of the Caprica Resistance, that her insistence to Adama to leave the Colonial worlds behind was a mistake. Adama, also calling Roslin by her first name, firmly chastises her, reminding Roslin that her decision was correct. If he had chosen to stay, Adama, his son, and all of humanity would be dead.
*Adama and Roslin's party later find the Tomb. With some teamwork, they discover and activate the Tomb's virtual hologram mechanism. Roslin's gamble on faith pays off big for humanity, and the group gains a map and guide to the true location of Earth.
*Back on Galactica, Commander Adama introduces Roslin as President during a speech on the ship, and leads the audience in a rousing ovation on her return, publicly burying the hatchet between them.
*Adama and Roslin's respect for each other grew stronger and their leadership in managing fleet business became more cooperative, asking each other for advice and correcting each other as needed. They work together in getting reporter D'anna Biers corralled from her potentially disruptive tabloid expose' of the Gideon shootings by giving her almost-unlimited access to interview Galactica's crew. She creates a rousing documentary that meets her and Adama's approval (Final Cut).
*The military crew honors Roslin by christening a new experimental stealth fighter by the name, Laura, a gesture that brings tears to the President.
*Despite the pleasure of the arrival of battlestar Pegasus, Roslin becomes concerned about Cain's abrupt command style and refusal to supply the civilian fleet.
*After a near-disastrous military confrontation between the two battlestar commanders, Roslin chastises them both and tells them to concentrate on more important matters. Privately, Roslin tells Adama that Cain, whose power can radically affect the remnant of humanity both Roslin and Adama have strived so hard to protect, must be killed if Adama and the Fleet are to survive.

*After the battle, and Admiral Cain's death, Roslin, now more frail with her illness, promotes William Adama to Admiral. The new admiral gives the president a kiss, establishing a more personal aspect to their friendship.
*Roslin is miraculously saved by the injection of stem cells from the Cylon hybrid fetus, which apparently eradicates her cancer (Epiphanies). In the hours prior to the cure, however, Roslin remembers her last days on Caprica, including the attractive blonde with Dr. Baltar, her vice-president. She now recognizes the woman as a copy of a Humanoid Cylon.
*Roslin confronts Baltar on his association and later confesses the memory to William Adama (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).
*Roslin returns to work with a dispassionate, zealous manner not unlike her predecessor, Richard Adar, including an attempt to stop the black market , handling the terrible loss of Billy Keikeya, and the upcoming presidential election.
*Roslin's appoints a new aide, Tory Foster, who is an energetic young woman with a great deal of political drive.
*Complicating what may have been an easy re-election include Roslin's decision to enforce a no-abortion law to aid in repopulation while allowing a Gemenese girl Rya Kibby to have an abortion, angering Gemenon representative Sarah Porter and losing most support from Roslin's religious base.
*Expecting Tom Zarek to run for president, Roslin is shocked when her own vice president, Dr. Baltar, challenges Roslin for the presidency.
*Convinced that that the only way to keep the newborn Cylon-hybrid, Hera, alive but out of the eye of Humanoid Cylons, Roslin has the infant's death faked and hands the child over to a foster mother named Maya (Downloaded).
*Roslin easily leads Baltar in the election polls, but with the discovery of a habitable planet dubbed "New Caprica", Baltar finds the perfect wedge issue to use against Roslin. Despite the extreme difficulties of colonization, the people of the Fleet vote their extreme hopes over their rational fears and Roslin's voice of reason.
*Roslin gives Foster tacit approval to rig the election in order to save the Fleet from electing someone that she knows (in her heart) is a Cylon conspirator. But the fraud is discovered. Admiral Adama confers with Roslin and convinces her that rigging a democratic election was a line that they simply cannot cross. He indicates that the people have made the wrong decision to elect Baltar president, probably even a disastrous choice, but it was their choice.
*Roslin agrees to back down, and Adama announces a mistake in the vote count. A perturbed Baltar doesn't press further, content with having won the election, and orders colonization of New Caprica immediately after his swearing-in.
*Early in the colonization, Roslin finds time to relax on New Caprica. She meets with Admiral Adama, who also takes in some time to unwind. The two friends comfortably chat about matters small and not-so-small over smoking and drinking, and later gaze at the stars together, allowing themselves to relax, lying outside, close to each other. Roslin worries that, amidst their temporary comfort, the Cylons could return, but it is nice to have what they have for the time being (Unfinished Business).

*A year passes on New Caprica, and Baltar's administration becomes the unmitigated, incompetent disaster that Roslin had feared. Meanwhile, Roslin returns to her old love of teaching, running the new settlement's school. Assisted by Maya, who brings her infant adopted daughter Isis (the secreted Cylon hybrid), Roslin is more comfortable watching over the pair personally.
*On the 380th day after settling on the planet, the Cylons discover the colony, as Roslin had warned, and occupy the settlement (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).
*Roslin is questioned by Gaius Baltar and asked to publicly denounce the Resistance suicide bombings, but failing that, has her released. She is later collected in the round up of 200 suspected resistance members, including Tom Zarek and Cally Tyrol, for execution (Precipice).
*After being saved by the resistance, she assigns Samuel Anders to protect Maya and Isis (Exodus, Part I).
*Later, during the Battle of New Caprica, she evacuates the planet aboard Colonial One which reunites with the Fleet along with the other previously grounded ships (Exodus, Part II).
*After the Fleet reunites after the escape from New Caprica, Gaius Baltar is officially deposed and as the Vice President, Tom Zarek becomes President. He only briefly holds the office; under pressure from Admiral Adama, Zarek agrees to step aside from the Presidency. Roslin is named as his Vice President, and Zarek steps down to return Roslin as President. However, as part of the deal, Roslin tells Zarek that he can have the Vice Presidency. She is later sworn in after all of the official gestures have been made, and she issues a general pardon to everyone in the Fleet in response to the quiet executions of some of the people who collaborated with the Cylons, and to prevent the Fleet from being torn apart by long trials (Collaborators).

*Roslin and Adama work well together in managing Fleet morale, analyzing new data that helps guide the Fleet on the way to Earth ("Torn," "A Measure of Salvation") and handling a serious food shortage (The Passage). When the Fleet discovers the Temple of Five on the algae planet, Roslin dives into the analysis of the structure and its scripture background. Roslin's relationship with Adama is strained when Adama discovers that Roslin hid the Cylon baby, Hera, without his knowledge. Infuriated, he leaves Roslin after she admits the situation, without leaving her a chance to explain (The Eye of Jupiter).

Roslin's past actions to protect Hera Agathon come to a head when the Agathons choose to rescue their daughter by killing Sharon to force her to download to the Cylon ships. When Roslin attempts to chastise Karl Agathon for putting Sharon in the hands of the Cylons (and her knowledge of Colonial tactics and procedures with her), Helo angrily replies that, if Roslin had not faked Hera's death and hid her from them, this situation would not have existed. Roslin accepts culpability with visible distress.

After Gaius Baltar is captured, Roslin's desire for answers about his involvement with the Cylons "infects" several others, including Tigh and Admiral Adama. Roslin initially orders that Baltar is forced to stay awake as a form of coersion, which Baltar counters by a hunger strike and later, a suicide attempt. The Fleet leadership applies a version of "Good cop-Bad cop" with Baltar, where Roslin assumes both roles. She first calmly speaking to Baltar and asking specific questions about his time with the Cylons and his role as a traitorous president. Moments later, in a manner very uncharacteristic of Roslin, she loudly interrogates Baltar and yells for Colonel Tigh and his marines to carry Baltar to an airlock in a ruse to force him to talk. Baltar calls the bluff, however. Roslin appears ecstatic to learn that Adama has a interrogation drug that may force Baltar to tell more. This interrogation has mixed results that reveal more questions than answers, including Baltar's belief that he was a Cylon himself (Taking A Break From All Your Worries).

Notes
*The character of Laura Roslin is unique to the Battlestar Galactica saga. She has no counterpart to the Original Series, where its version of President Adar is killed and a presidential replacement is never made. Roslin assumes more of the political-spiritual leadership of the Original Series' Commander Adama, whereas William Adama is representative of the Original Series' character's military commander aspect.

*Roslin's apparent cure in "Epiphanies" contradicts the "dying leader" clause of the Pythian Prophecy, despite the fulfillment of her role in the Tomb of Athena story arc. Indications from the creators of the show suggest that Roslin's health trials may not yet be over.

*Actress Mary McDonnell is perhaps best known for her role in the epic film, Dances with Wolves, with Kevin Costner. Another famous role of hers was the First Lady in Independence Day, a film which (in a less serious tone than Battlestar) depicts cocky human fighter pilots battling an genocidal enemy from outer space.

*In the Singer/DeSanto continuation of the the Original Series, a female president named Mara would visit Galactica in much the same way that Laura Roslin did as part of that Galacticas decommissioning ceremony.

*The glasses that the character wears are also McDonnell's real glasses.

*President Roslin's appointment as Colonial president parallels US President Gerald R. Ford, who became US Vice President and later President through succession or appointment, not by election.

Captain Karl C. Agathon was the ECO aboard Raptor 478, piloted by Lieutenant JG Sharon "Boomer" Valerii. He is young, loyal, capable, resourceful, and attracted to Valerii. Those aboard Galactica seem to find his real name cumbersome or unwieldy. He's almost always addressed by his callsign, "Helo."

Biography
At the time of the Cylon Attack, Lieutenant Karl Agathon, serial number PK-789934, is on patrol in Valerii's Raptor flying with battlestar Galactica's last fully-operational Viper squadron, and witnesses the destruction of the squadron by Cylon Raiders, after the Raiders exploit the Command Navigation Program to disable the Vipers.

Following the attack, Agathon and Valerii attempt to return to Galactica, avoiding Cylon patrols, but are unsuccessful: their Raptor is damaged in a Cylon missile strike, and Helo receives a wound in his leg from shrapnel that pierces their ship. As a result of the damage received, the Raptor is forced down on Caprica, where Valerii makes emergency repairs. Moments after Valerii's repairs, their ship is mobbed by civilians desperate to get off the planet.

With limited space for survivors aboard the Raptor, Agathon volunteers his seat to Dr. Gaius Baltar and remains on Caprica in the hope that Baltar will be of benefit to the Colonials in their renewed fight against the Cylons. Both Helo and Boomer feel that there is no chance that he will survive the Cylon nuclear attack on Caprica, but he selflessly chooses to stay behind anyway, giving up his own life so Baltar can get to Galactica.

Marooned
After Boomer's departure, Helo apparently separates from the surviving refugees (who soon succumb to radiation poisoning) and flees from Cylon ground forces. After six days on Caprica, surviving on anti-radiation medication from his survival pack, he is captured after noticing a version of the Cylon known (secretly only to Gaius Baltar) as Number Six.

Helo is "rescued" by a copy of Sharon Valerii, unaware that this is not the same one who abandoned him on Caprica. She guides him across Caprica as part of an elaborate (if potentially hastily conceived) plan / experiment designed to make this second Valerii the object of Agathon's affections. Several situations are engineered to make this happen:

*A "honey trap" offering reasonably secure accommodations (a "fall-out shelter") together with sufficient supplies for two people beneath a restaurant (Act of Contrition)
*Engineering Valerii's capture to test Helo's loyalty towards her (You Can't Go Home Again / Litmus)
*Establishing a further (long-term) "honey trap" for Helo and Valerii in the wilderness of Caprica.

Agathon eventually admits that he has feelings for Valerii and that he would have gladly traded places with Chief Tyrol, who he knew was having an illict relationship with her. Following this, the two have sex in a forest on Caprica. Afterwards, Valerii is instructed by the Five and Six overseeing the experiment to lead her lover to a nearby cabin, and to kill him if he refuses to settle there. However, the Cylon plan goes awry because Valerii has apparently fallen in love with Agathon. She forces them both on the run once more, this time genuinely seeking to escape from Caprica via the military base at Delphi, which is now under Cylon control.

During their attempts to reach Delphi, Agathon witnesses a troop of Cylon Centurions being led by Number Six - the woman he thought had been killed when Valerii rescued him. This draws him to the conclusion that the Cylons are using human clones they have created (Colonial Day). Once at Delphi, Agathon receives another shock: not only are further versions of Six on-hand - he comes face-to-face with another Valerii copy, revealing the full truth about the woman known as "Boomer" to him. Believing he was lured into a trap, Agathon goes on the run, leaving Valerii at the base.

The Valerii copy that Helo has paired with later catches up with him, and while he shoots her in the arm, he does not kill her as she might be of use to him in escaping the planet. Caprica-Valerii then informs Helo that she is pregnant with his child, and that they should go to the Delphi Museum. There, Agathon is reunited with Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (who just arrived from Galactica using a stolen Cylon Raider) immediately after she kills a copy of Number Six and retrieves the Arrow of Apollo. Thrace, realizing immediately that Valerii is a Cylon (knowing much earlier than Helo that Cylons can mimic human form) tries to kill Valerii, but Agathon stops her because she is pregnant (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II, Scattered).

Valerii runs away out of fear of Thrace, taking her Cylon Raider. Fearing that Number Six will finish transferring her consciousness to a new body and warn the Cylons about the humans' presence in Delphi, Agathon and Thrace make their way to Thrace's old apartment (Scattered, Valley of Darkness). Later, Thrace and Agathon join up with the human resistance on Caprica (Resistance).

The Resistance and escape from Caprica
Agathon, Anders and others later rescue Thrace from the Cylons' "hospital". Valerii returns to aid Helo in locating the missing Thrace, and later saves the day by gunning down several Centurions in a stolen Heavy Raider. Helo, Thrace, and Valerii leave Caprica en route to the Fleet (The Farm). The group lands on the Astral Queen, which has broken off from the rest of the Fleet (Home, Part I). When Lee Adama grabs the new copy of Valerii and threatens to shoot her, Helo raises his gun to Lee's head in response. They are calmed by Roslin, who then orders Valerii thrown out of an airlock. Valerii convinces Roslin of her usefulness before this happens, and later accompanies Helo and others to Kobol to find the Tomb of Athena (Home, Part I). On the way to the Tomb of Athena, Apollo remarks to Starbuck that he is disturbed that Helo and this Valerii copy love each other, and Helo admits to Valerii that he now loves and trusts her. When they finally reach the tomb, Commander Adama orders Helo to stay outside with Valerii and Tom Zarek while Chief Tyrol guards all of them. With the successful gathering of information on the whereabouts of Earth, Helo and the group return to Galactica and the reunified Fleet.

Home on Galactica
Helo's welcome-home to Galactica, months after being declared MIA on Caprica (Home, Part II), isn't a generally warm one. Many in the crew find his romance with the Caprica Valerii disquieting or disgusting. A few crew warm up to Helo after his suggestion of using carbon composites on the new fighter, the Blackbird, turns Tyrol's pet project into a significant stealth technology (Flight of the Phoenix).

Chief Tyrol is still nursing the loss of Boomer (the Galactica copy of Valerii that left Helo on Caprica and later shoots Commander Adama), and now must deal with the return of another Valerii, her "memories" of him, and the fact that Helo is romantically involved with her. The friction between Helo and Tyrol becomes too much and a fight ensues before both realize that fighting will gain them little. The two tacitly appear to accept the awkward situation for what it is.

Helo and Tyrol learn of the gang-rape of the captured Cylon on battlestar Pegasus, and are shocked to learn that the "Cylon interrogator", Lieutenant Alastair Thorne, would be "interrogating" the incarcerated Valerii that day. Prior to this discovery, Helo is prepared to fight the drunken Pegasus crewmembers over their disrespect, but Tyrol realizes what is coming for Valerii and convinces him to head to the brig to her aid. While apparently successful in stopping the assault, the two are arrested and taken to Pegasus when Thorne is accidentally killed. Admiral Helena Cain conducts summary courts-martial on the two Galactica crewmembers, finding them guilty and sentencing them to execution. When Commander Adama hears of this abrupt treatment, he launches a Raptor with Marine units as well as his Viper squadrons to get Helo and Tyrol back. A standoff ensues, with not only Helo's and Tyrol's lives in the balance, but thousands of others in the Fleet (Pegasus).

Aboard Pegasus
After Starbuck returns with images of the Resurrection Ship, Adama and Cain agree to a truce. Helo and Tyrol are given a stay of execution, but not a pardon. While they are imprisoned aboard Pegasus, a pair of deck hands, irate about Thorne's death, assault them. Jack Fisk, the XO of Pegasus, puts a stop to this by citing regulations, but rebuffs Helo's thanks. Like the deck crew, Fisk had been saved from death by Thorne, and he is not sympathetic to Valerii, whom he views as a machine.

After the destruction of the Resurrection Ship and the death of Admiral Cain, Fisk becomes the Commander of Pegasus. He returns Helo and Tyrol to Galactica, where the former is joyfully received by Valerii.

The events of Epiphanies
When the dying President Roslin orders the hybrid baby aborted, Helo attempts to dissuade Adama from carrying out the order in private conversation in the Admiral's office, but fails. When Valerii is being brought to the medical bay for the abortion, Helo blocks the door, his hand on his pistol. He offers to take Sharon aboard a Raptor and leave the Fleet, but is rebuffed by Adama, who tells him, "You're a soldier". Helo retorts that he is a father, like Adama.
Baltar defuses the potentially violent incident by arriving with his report on the medically useful nature of the hybrid fetus. There are no apparent consequences from his actions.

The hybrid birth
Helo is present when Hera, the human-Cylon hybrid, is born. He and Valerii marvel at their baby, and Helo shocks Valerii when he says that it almost makes one believe in the Cylon God. When Valerii attacks Dr. Cottle, accusing him of murder after he informs her of the baby's "death," Helo tries to restrain her but ends up with marines pointing guns at him as Valerii is returned to her cell.

Caprica SAR & New Caprica
Despite Valerii's continued belief that Cottle and the other humans killed Hera, Helo is able to convince her to assist Kara Thrace's plan for the rescue of Samuel Anders and his Caprica Resistance group (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I). Helo and the others manage to survive the Cylon assault after Cavil informs them that the Cylons have left the Colonies.
With the happenstance discovery of New Caprica, the relationship between Helo and Sharon Valerii becomes increasingly strained, due primarily to her growing depression over the loss of their child and the fact that Valerii did not inform the SAR team that Caprica-Cavil was a Humanoid Cylon.

During the year in orbit around New Caprica he and Sharon Valerii become married. Agathon is acting as a replacement to Felix Gaeta as Galacticas tactical officer (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II) . He has been promoted to Captain, and has assumed the XO slot aboard Galactica.

The Second Exodus
While he temporarily relinquishes the XO slot after the Battle of New Caprica and Tigh's return to Galactica, Tigh's actions and attitude cause him to be relieved of duty (Collaborators). Helo finds himself once again acting as Adama's right-hand man (Torn). During this time, Helo is shown to have been promoted to Captain (although the exact date of his promotion is still unknown).

When faced with using the recently discovered Cylon virus as an agent for genocide, Helo undermines the mission, which he feels is an atrocious and evil action, by sabotaging the Cylon prisoner's prison cells so they all suffocate before they can be downloaded into a Resurrection Ship, and therefore downloading the virus. Roslin and Adama both know the probable culprit, but Adama, who felt the President was on morally shaky grounds using genocide as a military solution, decides not to take any action against Helo (A Measure of Salvation).

Helo participates in the organized shipwide fights intended to boost morale. He fights a hard match against Major Lee Adama. (Unfinished Business)

He has since returned to flight duty and pilots a Raptor during operations to replenish the fleet's food stores. (The Passage) It is during their time at the Algae planet that a Cylon negotiation party aboard Galactica reveals to his wife that Hera is still alive. Though Athena initially denies the taunt, she and Helo soon find out from Admiral Adama that it is true, much to their dismay (The Eye of Jupiter). Athena believes the only way to get her daughter back is to be resurrected inside the Cylon fleet, and begs Helo to kill her. Being unable to dissuade her, Helo grants her wish. Athena resurrects and successfully retrieves Hera, aided by Caprica-Six (Rapture). He is present during the post-incident briefing regarding the Temple of Five, implying that he may hold additional duties besides flight ops.

This is confirmed when Helo is assigned by Admiral Adama to take charge of the hundreds of civilians which have been transfered to "Galactica"'s starboard hangar pod. This includes a large number of Sagittarons, many of whom display the first symptoms of Mellorak infection. In a meeting with Admiral Adama, Colonel Tigh, Doctor Cottle and Doctor Robert (the civilian physician who has taken up the care of those living in "Dogsville"), Helo learns the disease is fatal if not treated within the first 48 hours. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. King comes to Helo and accuses Dr. Robert of murder after the death of her son due to the Doctor's anti-Sagittaron bigotry. Helo begins an investigation, made difficult by several factors. Not only is Dr. Robert held in high regard by Helo's superiors, but the claims of the Sagittarons are dismissed due to a negative view of the religious fundamentalism and ancient traditions practiced by most Sagittarons. Helo's personal conflict with Col. Tigh over his marriage to Sharon is exasperated by the Colonel's prejudices to a point where Helo hits Tigh in a crowded corridor. Though the Colonel does not press charges, he makes it clear Helo is no longer in good standing within the fleet. This becomes the subject of a heated discussion between Helo and Sharon. It is suggested Helo's assignment to "Dogsville" is punishment not only for his marriage to her, but also due to Helo being the prime suspect in the failed biological attack against the Cylons. Helo persists in his investigation, however, despite this opposition. When Helo is warned by King in the middle of the night about a seriously ill Dualla (also a Sagittaron) under Robert's care. Helo immediately goes to Dualla's aide and finds himself in a stand-off with Dr. Robert. Just as Robert orders Marines to arrest Helo, Colonel Tigh and Dr. Cottle arrive with another detachment of Marines. Dr. Cottle reports that toxicology tests done on the deceased Sagittarons revealed no antidote but rather toxic bisphosphnate. Helo is ordered by Tigh to arrest Robert and a short time later, Admiral Adama personally apologizes to Helo for not believing his initial claims about Robert and the opposition he encountered in his investigation (The Woman King). During his private meeting with Adama, Helo confesses his role in the failed biological attack on the Cylons (The Woman King bonus scene}.

Notes
Name
The Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica plays heavily on Greek mythology and history; the use of names such as Delphi and those of the Olympian gods is an example. Helo's names have many possible referrents:
*Agathon was an ancient Greek tragic poet.
*Agathos Daemon was of one of the spirits that lie between the gods and mortals in Greek mythology. He is associated with the cultivation of grapes and grain as well as luck and abundance.
*The prefix "Agatho-" means 'good' in Greek.
*Helios was the Greek god of the Sun associated most prominently with the myth of Phaëton.
*"Helo" is slang for helicopter, and the Raptor craft Helo crews is visually based on an Apache helicopter. This fits with the callsign of his former co-pilot, "Boomer", which is slang for a ballistic missile submarine.

Character
*In an interview, actor Tahmoh Penikett discussed the (unofficial) backstory he had worked out with Katee Sackhoff to explain her comment in "Scattered" that they "go way back":
:"We are old friends and we have been through a lot together. I have been asked this question before, but I think it is pretty safe to bet that we were either in the academy together or we have known each other for years. Whether there has ever been a romantic relationship, that is definitely a possibility--especially with Starbuck...It could have been a one night stand, but there is in fact a relationship. We are more like brother and sister, and have been through a lot together. Helo really understands Starbuck and she understands him. They are a lot closer than most people think."
*Helo's full name (or even his fate) wasn't revealed until "33". He was initially intended as an expendable character; originally, he was supposed to have actually died when the Raptor left him behind on Caprica. Penikett's performance convinced TPTB otherwise. Curiously, Helo's second replacement on Boomer's Raptor, Racetrack, was also intended as a one-shot character, but was retained by TPTB for similar reasons.
*While he is shown in a Raptor during the funeral of his daughter in Downloaded, "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I" it is the first time he has done his job as ECO on screen since the Miniseries.
