The devastating opening wave of the [[Cylon Attack|Second Cylon War]], in which the Cylons used a programming backdoor to infiltrate and shut down Colonial Fleet systems. Almost all ships that tried to engage the forces of the Cylon surprise attack suffered immediate and total power failure, "like someone turned off a switch". As a result the Cylon fleet suffered almost no losses and effortlessly destroyed practically all opposition.

Battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'', commanded by [[William Adama]], was the only Colonial ship unaffected by the Cylon's computer infiltration, because it's computer systems were never networked. As such, it was presumably the only ship that ever mounted any real defense against attacking Cylon ships. Though ''Galactica'' lost all 20 of her [[Viper]] Mark VII's in their first sortie against the Cylons because their networked computers were vulnerable to infiltration, she also had 40 Viper Mark II's board as part of its recent decommissioning ceremony. The Viper Mark II's were an old but robust design, but most importantly never contained the [[Command Navigation Program]] that doomed other fighters and were therefore unaffected by the Cylon computer [[Virus|virus]]. ''Galactica'' was able to re-arm and deploy its Viper Mark II's and repel several attacking squadrons of [[Cylon Raider]]s, even surviving a direct hit from a Cylon tactical nuclear warhead, but not without a loss of 85 of its ship's crew in the port [[flight pod]] and some internal damage.

The Cylons proceeded to use nuclear weapons against each of the Twelve Colonies, including [[The Twelve Colonies#Caprica|Caprica]]. After [[The Twelve Colonies#Picon|Picon]] was nuked, the Colonials broadcast an unconditional surrender, which was completely ignored by the Cylons. President [[Adar (RDM)|Adar]] and all Colonial government officials, save for spacebound Secretary of Education [[Laura Roslin]], were presumed killed or missing. The [[Case Orange]] contingency mechanism activated to seek out the remaining government officials, of which only Roslin apparently acknowledged. Sworn in on the government passenger liner ''[[Colonial Heavy 798]]'', she became the new President of the Twelve Colonies. Roslin immediately began locating other stranded Colonial civilian and military vessels to form a convoy. Several ships without [[FTL|faster-than-light]] ability had to be left behind to their fate by the other FTL ships of the convoy when the Cylons located the convoy and an attack was imminent. These [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight]] ships and their passengers were destroyed by Cylons while the remaining ships joined ''Galactica'' at her new location.

[[Picon Fleet Headquarters]] was destroyed in the opening wave of the attack, as were 30 battlestars, noted to be "a quarter of the Fleet" according to [[Kara Thrace]]'s comment to Commander Adama in the opening events of the attack. Admiral Nagala subsequently took command of the fleet aboard battlestar ''[[Atlantia]]''. Soon after, ''Atlantia'' was lost with all hands. [[Commander Adama]] aboard ''Galactica'' assumed command of whatever was left of the Colonial military fleet, and sent a [[wireless]] transmission to any surviving Colonial forces to rendezvous at [[Ragnar Anchorage]] where desperately needed munitions were stored for the battlestar's guns and her fighters.

Battlestar ''[[Pegasus]]'' escaped certain destruction by the Cylons at the [[Scorpion Fleet Shipyards]] by a making a [[Blind jump|blind jump]] into space. Most of the battlestar's networked computer systems were offline for an overhaul except for her navigation computer, which fortunately could execute a Jump. With the "fog of war" and the desperate means of their escape, ''Pegasus'' was apparently unaware of ''Galactica's'' survival and proceeded to conduct attacks on Cylon forces it encountered as it, too, left the solar system of the Colonies. ''Galactica'' had no knowledge of this other battlestar as the Colonies disintegrated and communications between other Colonial forces faded into static.

Case Orange

The Colonial [[Government]] did institute measures to ensure a working government in the chance of a catastrophic event.

In the latter part of the [[Cylon]] [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|genocidal destruction]] of the [[Twelve Colonies]] in the re-imagined [[Mini-Series]], Education Secretary [[Laura Roslin]] receives an radio message in the cockpit of her transport, ''[[Colonial One|Colonial Heavy 798]]'':

:'''"This is an official Colonial Government broadcast. All ministers and officials should now go to Case Orange. Repeat: This is an official Colonial Government broadcast. All ministers and officials should now go to Case Orange."'''

Roslin explains that this automated message is designed to be broadcast should the [[President Adar|President of the Twelve Colonies]], the Vice President and most of the Colonial Cabinet are killed or incapacitated. She instucts the captain of the ship to acknowledge the message by sending her government ID code on the same frequency as the message: D-456-345-A. Roslin leaves the cockpit and awaits the return response. Presumably, the Case Orange system gathers the IDs of all government officials, then determines who becomes the new President and where to contact him/her and any remaining officials.

[[Lee Adama|Captain Adama]], on board ''Colonial Heavy 798'', asks Roslin how far down she ranks in the government succession order. She replies she is 43rd in succession. She says with sadness that she personally knew all 42 individuals from the President on down, most having served with President Adar in his past administration and when he was a mayor.

The ship's captain returns to Roslin with the printed response. Out of the 42 other government officials above her, apparently only she has responded to the automated message.

It is not stated whether there were other officials lower in the succession order than Roslin, but it can be presumed from the Case Orange result that they are unable to respond as well, effectively removing them from consideration. It may be presumed that the Case Orange beacon had been running for some time after the attacks began, yet no others had responded to its message, since Roslin receives a response fairly quickly. The Case Orange system may determine that assignment of a President is conditional to the length of time since its activation. The longer the beacon is seeking out officials without response, the quicker it responds and assigns a President to ensure a working government.

After the ship's captain retrieves a priest on board, [[Elosha]], Roslin is sworn in as the new President of the Twelve Colonies, surrounded by reporters that accompanied her to [[Original battlestar (RDM)|battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' on her tour of the education facilities of the new museum there, shortly before the Cylon attack began.

As Roslin's first act as President, she begins the task of locating other stranded civilian and military ships in the sector. The ship's captain changes the ship's call sign to ''[[Colonial One]]'' in recognition of the presence of the new President on board.

Based on information given in the episode "[[Colonial Day]]", the Case Orange process assigned Roslin the remainder of President Adar's term. Because of Roslin's battle with cancer, it is unlikely that she may campaign for another term.

In an early draft of the final script, the Case Orange message is shown as: ''"This is an official notification broadcast as per section 35, article 17 of the Emergency Continuity of Government Act. All ministers, department secretaries, and division heads now go to Case Orange.''" While this information is not quite [[Canon|canonical]], it reinforces the measures that the Colonial Government would do to ensure its survival--which suggests that the first [[Cylon War]] may have nearly brought the government to a similar crisis.

Playa Palacios

"One of the last legitimate journalists in the universe", Playa Palacios was a veteran columnist with the [[Picon Star Tribune]] prior to the [[Cylon Attack]] on the [[12 Colonies]].

Originally dispatched to cover the ceremonies surrounding the decommissioning of the [[Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'', she is now a co-host of the new wireless current affairs programme, [[The Colonial Gang]], working alongside fellow legitimate journalists [[Macmanus, James| James Macmanus]] and [[Hamilton, Sekou| Sekou Hamilton]].

During the formation of the interim [[Quorum of Twelve]] by President [[Roslin, Laura|Laura Roslin]], she is quite taken by Dr. [[Baltar, Gaius|Gaius Baltar]], and gains an "exclusive" with him when Roslin asks Baltar to be her nominee for Vice President, to stand against [[Tom Zarek]] ([[Colonial Day]]).

On The Colonial Gang, Palacios is something of a firm supporter of Laura Roslin, standing in the face of James Macmanus' sometimes vitriolic condemnation of Roslin's time in office.

Fitting her role as "one of the last legitimate journalists in the universe", Playa sit's "first-chair" in the press conference with [[Commander Adama]] ([[Home]]) and also recieves "first question" following the Commander's statement(certainly an honor for reporters). This is probably due to Playa Palacios's listenership/readership throughout the fleet. [[Sekou Hamilton]], who also appears on the [[Colonial Gang]] and in the press conference in ([[Home]]), is seated behind Playa in the press briefing room. This probably signifies that he is not as popular in the fleet-wide media.

At the time of the Cylon attack on the [[Twelve Colonies]], ''Colonial Heavy 798'' was being used to ferry Secretary of Education [[Laura Roslin]], her entourage, and members of the Colonial media to/from the decommissioning ceremonies for the [[Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]''. Following the attack, under the direct orders of Secretary Roslin, the ship engaged in rescue missions, locating and gathering civilian vessels stuck in space.

Following the confirmation that President Adar and the rest of his cabinet were either dead or missing, [[Laura Roslin]] was sworn-in as the new President, and ''Colonial Heavy 798'' was re-named ''Colonial One'', in recognition of its status in transporting the President. While the vessel doubtless lacks many of the facilities and systems the original ''Colonial One'' would have boasted, [[Roslin]] has nevertheless made it her base of operations, thus helping to keep her civilian administration physically distinct from [[William Adama|William Adama's]] military leadership.

==Design Characteristics==
''Colonial One'' is a standard Caprican-designed liner converted for government use as a long-range transport. As such, its normal passenger capacity has been greatly reduced to make way for the offices and cabins required by government personnel when undertaking official visits.

A large main cabin aboard the ship provides seating accommodation for dignitaries and press alike, while forward of this are small, more personal quarters reserved for ministers and their guests. Despite its conversion for government use, ''Colonial One'' retained its own docking bay, large enough to take a Colonial shuttle, and also boasts a cargo hold big enough to house a Viper-sized craft. The large capacity hold probably indicates that ships of this type may have been used by the Colonial government in times of emergency or disaster to render aid and supplies. ''([[Mini-Series]])''

==Cinematic Trivia==
The cockpit of ''Colonial One'' is a redressed original Space Shuttle Orbiter cockpit simulator. The current Orbiter fleet have since been refurbished with [http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/sts101_new_cockpit.html newer cockpits.]

The passenger area of the ship is modeled after the interior of the Pan Am Clipper Orion space shuttle seen ferrying Dr. Floyd into orbit in 2001: A Space Odyseey.

The ship was intentionally painted in the color scheme of the real world [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_One Air Force One] to evoke more of that "real world" feel from the series.

Half way through [[Season One]], the ''Colonial One'' CG model was updated and the seal of the President of [[the Twelve Colonies]] was added to the dorsal "hump" at the bow of the ship.
