It is explained by [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]] that a group of Centurions calling themselves [[Guardians]] fractured from the Cylon majority with such a basestar. The belief is that they escaped to the far reaches of space to avoid being shut-down in favor of their modernized, non-sentient [[Cylon Centurion|successors]] ([[Razor]]). The only basestar of this type known to exist was destroyed by Colonial forces shortly after its discovery.

This basestar belongs to the rebel Cylon faction comprising of all [[Number Two|Two]], [[Number Six|Six]] and [[Number Eight|Eight]] models apart from [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]], as well as the last remaining [[Number Three|Three]] copy later on. The basestar becomes seriously damaged after the other three models wanted them wiped out and destroyed all but one basestar, which has become refuge to the surviving Twos, Sixes and Eights ([[The Ties That Bind]]).

The basestar is later found by the ''[[Demetrius]]'' and her crew, who have been searching for [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], and they send the basestar to [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]], where they form an unsteady alliance to destroy the [[Resurrection Hub]], and hence lose the Cylons' ability to [[resurrection|resurrect]]. However, the basestar becomes the only ship to make it there, after the [[Hybrid]] jumps without the fleet, but later manages to destroy the Hub with the help of the Humans in the ship, as well as retreive the last Three copy ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]], [[The Hub]]).

After returning to the fleet in a succesfully mission, they join the fleet to Earth, only to find it in ruins. The basestar is later invited to join the fleet to find a new home afterwards ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]).

It has since joined the fleet completly, even getting it's own representation in the new Quorum of Ship's Captians and being slated to act as the new flagship under Admiral Adama's command once ''Galactica'' is scrapped for parts (the Cylons offered that to Admiral Adama).

Much like its modern counterpart, this model utilized chemically-propelled missiles (with both nuclear and standard warheads) as the main form of offensive weaponry. Raiders were deployed from access points (totaling 8 in number) throughout a basestar's hull to provide defense.

During [[Operation Raptor Talon]], the battlestar ''[[Columbia (RDM)|Columbia]]'' was destroyed by basestar missiles and Raider attacks as ''[[Galactica]]'' and another unnamed battlestar pressed their assaults.

The origins of the initial basestars are unclear. However, as [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons were a creation of man]] in the early days before the war, it is probable that man himself (through the efforts of various [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|colonies]]) designed the various ships and weapons used by the Cylons for the use in intra-colonial wars prior to the [[Articles of Colonization]].

A model of this basestar design is displayed over 40 years later on ''Galactica'', as part of its [[Galactica Museum|planned museum]] ([[Miniseries, Night 1]]).

Towards the end of the first Cylon War, the Cylons built a prototype basestar that had roughly the same shape as the modern basestar. The [[First Hybrid|first hybrids]] were developed for use with this model.

It is explained by [[Sharon Agathon|Athena]] that a group of Centurions calling themselves [[Guardians]] fractured from the Cylon majority with such a basestar. This basestar belongs to the rebel Cylon faction comprising of all [[Number Two|Two]], [[Number Six|Six]] and [[Number Eight|Eight]] models apart from [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]], as well as the last remaining [[Number Three|Three]] copy later on. The basestar becomes seriously damaged after the other three models wanted them wiped out and destroyed all but one basestar, which has become refuge to the surviving Twos, Sixes and Eights ([[The Ties That Bind]]).

The basestar is later found by the ''[[Demetrius]]'' and her crew, who have been searching for [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], and they send the basestar to [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]], where they form an unsteady alliance to destroy the [[Resurrection Hub]], and hence lose the Cylons' ability to [[resurrection|resurrect]]. However, the basestar becomes the only ship to make it there, after the [[Hybrid]] jumps without the fleet, but later manages to destroy the Hub with the help of the Humans in the ship, as well as retreive the last Three copy ([[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]], [[The Hub]]).

After returning to the fleet in a succesfully mission, they join the fleet to Earth, only to find it in ruins. The basestar is later invited to join the fleet to find a new home afterwards ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]).

It has since joined the fleet completly, even getting it's own representation in the new Quorum of Ship's Captians and being slated to act as the new flagship under Admiral Adama's command once ''Galactica'' is scrapped for parts (the Cylons offered that to Admiral Adama).

'''Lymphocytic encephalitis''' is a viral infectious disease caused by the Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV). Originally carried by rodents, primarily [[Life Forms of the Twelve Colonies#Mammals|rats]], LCMV is no longer lethal to humans, who have developed an immunity to the virus several hundred years ago.

A [[Lion's Head beacon|beacon]], believed to have been left by the [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)|Thirteenth Tribe]] on their way to [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], was contaminated by LCMV. When a basestar discovers the beacon while exploring the [[Lion's Head Nebula]], the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] bring the device on board and unleash the virus. Some time later, a team of Colonial marines discovers the drifting basestar and boards the vessel, finding everything save for a small group of humanoids dead. They take the ill Cylons (a [[Number Two|Two]], a [[Number Four|Four]], a [[Number Five|Five]], a [[Number Six|Six]], and an [[Number Eight|Eight]]) prisoner and return to ''Galactica'' just as the basestar's self-destruct mechanism activates and destroys the ship.

Though humans are immune, the virus is highly lethal to Cylons because of a bio-electric component that causes a fatal system error within the host. It is theorized that this system error disrupts the management of a humanoid Cylon's immune system, progressively weakening and eventually killing the infected individual. Furthermore, the Cylons speculate that if an infected host is [[Resurrection (RDM)|resurrected]], the system error will follow, potentially afflicting the [[Resurrection Ship]] and eventually the entire Cylon fleet.

This theory forms the basis of a plan devised by [[Lee Adama]] to eradicate the Cylon race. By killing the infected Cylons prisoners near a Resurrection Ship, the aforementioned bio-electrical effect would be spread to all Cylons upon download. Ultimately, the plan is thwarted when [[Karl Agathon]] kills the prisoners before ''Galactica'' can penetrate the Resurrection Ship's upload radius. Agathon does this despite the risk of being executed for treason, as he feels that the genocide of the Cylon race, despite the fact that they had tried to do the same to mankind, is morally wrong([[Torn]]).

During the time that the infected Cylons are held captive aboard ''Galactica'', [[Cottle|Dr. Cottle]] creates a simple vaccine that dramatically reverses the effect of the virus on said Cylons. However, an antibody in their blood breaks down the vaccine's RNA backbone, rendering the treatment useless. Because of that, the Cylons require regular close interval injections of the vaccine, or their condition significantly worsens. If regular injections are provided, an infected Cylon could be kept alive indefinitely.

Unlike the other Cylons [[Sharon Agathon]] displays immunity to the virus - although she is exposed to LCMV, the pathogen does not adversely affect her. Cottle postulates that human antibodies were transferred over to Sharon during her pregnancy with her half-human daughter [[Hera Agathon|Hera]], and that these antibodies are subduing the virus.

'''The Fleet''' is a convoy of ships sheltering the human survivors of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]]. The Fleet forms the backdrop of the drama of the [[Re-imagined Series]].

"The Fleet" originates as a convoy of about 60 commercial and civilian ships in the space surrounding [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]]. [[Laura Roslin]] - with the aid of [[Sharon Valerii]] - initiates the clustering of stranded vessels in the aftermath of the Cylon invasion of the Twelve Colonies, thus forming the convoy. Twenty of these ships are abandoned to a squadron of attacking [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] because they either lack [[FTL]] drives, or are damaged, like the sublight ''[[Botanical Cruiser]]'' and ''[[Gemenon Liner 1701]]''. The remaining vessels join battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' - the only Colonial warship [[Pegasus (RDM)|known]] to have survived the Cylon attack - in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant [[Ragnar]]. From here on, ''Galactica'' shoulders the role of the Fleet's protector ([[Miniseries]]).

[[Anastasia Dualla]] explains in "[[33]]" that 53 ships have jumped away from an attacking Cylon baseship, with 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives. Adding ''Galactica'' to this tally, results in a total number of 64 ships.

[[Saul Tigh]]'s statement in "[[The Farm]]" that the 24 ships departing with the [[Laura Roslin faction]] represent "almost a third of the fleet", implies that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's. However in the opening scene of "[[Home, Part I]]" Tigh's response to the number of civilians joining Roslin is "That's over a third of the people in the fleet." Since "the fleet" is used interchangeably to describe both the ships and the civilian populace, this could imply that Tigh's statement in "[[The Farm]]" was an estimate of the people who left and not the number of ships lost.

By "[[The Passage]]", there are likely fewer ships left in the Fleet because of the ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' destruction ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]) and the settlement and emergency exodus of [[New Caprica]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The political and social troubles befalling the Fleet as it wanders through space, serve as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally ''is'' what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as an indicator of the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Often the term is used to refer to the civilian populations, as opposed to the military personnel of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus''. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term ''President of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]''. This may be interpreted either as an expression of hope that the people of the Fleet will re-establish themselves on a new world, or a psychological inability to accept the Fleet as the only home that humanity will know for a long time.

After three years of searching the Fleet eventually reaches [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], but are disappointed to find it a devastated wasteland as a result of a nuclear holocaust ([[Revelations]]). The fleet leave Earth in search of a new home, with the Rebel Cylon Basestar joining them ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]). By the time of Felix Gaeta's and Tom Zarek's mutiny aboard ''Galactica'' ([[Blood on the Scales]]), dialogue indicates that the Fleet is down to the very low figure of 35 civilian ships, a surprising loss of about half the initial ships from [[33]]. Most of these losses remain unaccounted for, as very few civilian ships have been seen or heard to be actually lost on screen. Given that the human population has only declined by about one fifth at this point rather than a similar half, this could be a continuity error or retcon, or the remaining ships would have had to nearly double the number of civilians aboard to compensate. It is possible in the context of the dialogue in the episode that the figure of 35 referred only to the number of ships initially loyal to the mutineers.

The Rebel Basestar has now officially joined the Fleet as seen in [[Someone to Watch Over Me]] as the Fleet has a new Quorum made out of ship captains and the Rebel Basestar has a representative on the new Quorum, a [[Six]] named Sonja.

The Fleet would eventually be abandoned by the Colonials, with their ships guided into the Sun of the new homeworld of the humans. The Rebel baseship was given to the [[Cylon Centurion|centurions]] by the Rebel Cylons for them to find their own destiny ([[Daybreak, Part II]])

A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "[[33]]", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there are 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "[[Home, Part I]]", the [[Laura Roslin faction]] leaves the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 ware Gemenese and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the Fleet is 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica have more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron has in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.

There are 176 civilians in the cargo hold of ''[[Colonial One]]'' in "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]". The Fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", retconned up from 40 in the Miniseries.
