The modern basestars, seen some 40 years after the end of the Cylon War, are approximately the same size as a Colonial battlestar but appear to be more technologically advanced . The shape of the newer basestar reflects its name, with two Y-shaped hulls attached at their centers by a single pylon, the warship has a distinctive "star" shape.

They are equipped with a superior jump system and no visible means of sublight propulsion, lacking any engine pods or nacelles, but remain capable of chasing down a battlestar (Exodus, Part II). They can rotate their upper and lower halves into a tandem-Y configuration for entry into a planetary atmosphere (The Plan).

Basestars operate a fleet of small fighters, known as Raiders, and are capable of deploying hundreds of these ships simultaneously (see Related Imagery). The enormous number of Raiders serves as a basestar's primary defense system.

Like the Raiders, the basestars are partially organic, which is particularly evident in their landing bays (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). When severely damaged, they can sustain large, fleshy "wounds" (Faith). Moreover, Natalie mentions that their damaged baseship can heal itself (Guess What's Coming to Dinner?).

The baseships possess several conventional rooms and hallways, which are sleek but generally bland. Lighting plays a large role in the aesthetics and some rooms are furnished with clearly human objects, such as beds and couches. Humanoid Cylons project different surroundings to navigate ship corridors more easily, and to provide them with an individually pleasing environment (such as a lush forest). Data and other functions (such as analyzing visual information) are handled within a liquid computer interface that resembles a stream of water flowing over a luminous glass surface. Cylons can interact with the main computer by placing their hands in these basins (Torn).

Command and Control
A basestar is operated by many humanoid Cylons. Up to all seven models of them issue commands for the basestar from a central command and control center. Consensus amongst models is the typical procedure, as such the process of deliberation and voting on decisions may cause the basestar to react more slowly than a battlestar's command and control in a CIC.

A basestar's functions are managed by a partially humanoid Cylon incorporated into the ship, known as a Hybrid. The Hybrid, for all respects of identity and control, is the basestar. The ship is an extension of her body and she is the ship's mind. The Hybrid, despite its humanoid appearance, is not a considered a fellow humanoid Cylon and lacks voting power as other agents have in Cylon affairs.

A basestar has a datastream, or computer network, which interfaces with the Hybrid and all aspects of the basestar's operation.

Armaments
A basestar is capable of launching conventional or nuclear missiles from 220 turret launchers mounted throughout the arms and central axis that pivot to allow the basestar to fire in any direction. Basestar-launched nuclear strikes against Colonial ships are usually carried out before Raider deployment. One example of a Cylon nuclear attack involved three Cylon basestars that ambush the battlestar Pegasus. They open their attack firing several nuclear missiles before deploying Raiders and switching to a non-nuclear salvo (The Captain's Hand).

A basestar's complement of Raiders is estimated as high as 792 fighters, not counting fighters in repair or otherwise off-line. It should be noted that there are a total of 864 Raider launch slots on the arms of a pre-retconned Basestar. In comparison, the retconned Basestar has only 434 Raider launch slots, a dramatic decrease from the previous version.

This tactic, along with the massive numbers of Raiders that a basestar can unleash, suggest a reliance on overwhelming force to destroy a foe. It is probable that basestars use nuclear weapons to destroy the bulk of the Colonial Fleet (using their CNP back-doors to compromise their defenses first) in the opening wave of their destruction of the Colonies.

After the Colonial commanders draw away their Raider wings, two basestars are torn apart by the kinetic guns of the battlestars Pegasus and Galactica in a joint mission to destroy a Cylon Resurrection Ship. It would seem that that basestars rely heavily on their Raiders for close-range gun defense. Since a basestar does not appear to have point-defense batteries, or heavy armoring, it seems quite vulnerable to battlestars in close-range combat when fighter support is not prominent (Resurrection Ship, Part II). From this, it can be theorized that basestars are designed primarily as carriers for the massive fleet of Raiders they carry, rather than as a front-line main battleship. Their reliance on long-distance attacks with missiles and their complement of Raiders, as well as their overall fragility seem to support this.

It would also seem that basestars posess an automated self-destruct system that triggers in the event that no living cylons remain aboard (Torn).

Notes
*Beginning with the episode "Collaborators", a new exterior design is used for the basestars, bearing a sharper, more mechanical look than they previously had. This was apparently an upgrade by the visual effects crew to make the exterior reflect the interior design, which is seen for the first time in that episode.
The basestars in service during the 12-year Cylon War consisted of two flattened cones connected at the center by a thick pylon, giving them a conical saucer-like appearance (Razor Flashbacks).

Much like its modern counterpart, this model utilized chemically-propelled missiles (with both nuclear and standard warheads) as the main form of offensive weaponry. Raiders were deployed from access points (totaling 8 in number) throughout a basestar's hull to provide defense.

During Operation Raptor Talon, the battlestar Columbia was destroyed by basestar missiles and Raider attacks as Galactica and another unnamed battlestar pressed their assaults.

The origins of the initial basestars are unclear. However, as Cylons were a creation of man in the early days before the war, it is probable that man himself (through the efforts of various colonies) designed the various ships and weapons used by the Cylons for the use in intra-colonial wars prior to the Articles of Colonization.

A model of this basestar design is displayed over 40 years later on Galactica, as part of its planned museum (Miniseries, Night 1).
Towards the end of the first Cylon War, the Cylons built a prototype basestar that had roughly the same shape as the modern basestar. The first hybrids were developed for use with this model.

It is explained by Athena that a group of Centurions calling themselves Guardians fractured from the Cylon majority with such a basestar. The belief is that they escaped to the far reaches of space to avoid being shut-down in favor of their modernized, non-sentient successors (Razor). The only basestar of this type known to exist was destroyed by Colonial forces shortly after its discovery.

This basestar belongs to the rebel Cylon faction comprising of all Two, Six and Eight models apart from Boomer, as well as the last remaining Three copy later on. The basestar becomes seriously damaged after the other three models wanted them wiped out and destroyed all but one basestar, which has become refuge to the surviving Twos, Sixes and Eights (The Ties That Bind).

The basestar is later found by the Demetrius and her crew, who have been searching for Earth, and they send the basestar to the fleet, where they form an unsteady alliance to destroy the Resurrection Hub, and hence lose the Cylons' ability to resurrect. However, the basestar becomes the only ship to make it there, after the Hybrid jumps without the fleet, but later manages to destroy the Hub with the help of the Humans in the ship, as well as retreive the last Three copy (Guess What's Coming to Dinner?, The Hub).

After returning to the fleet in a succesfully mission, they join the fleet to Earth, only to find it in ruins. The basestar is later invited to join the fleet to find a new home afterwards (Sometimes a Great Notion).

It has since joined the fleet completly, even getting it's own representation in the new Quorum of Ship's Captians and being slated to act as the new flagship under Admiral Adama's command once Galactica is scrapped for parts (the Cylons offered that to Admiral Adama).

It would also seem to appear that basestars posess an automated self-destruct system that triggers in the event that no living cylons remain aboard (Torn).

It is explained by Athena that a group of Centurions calling themselves Guardians fractured from the Cylon majority with such a basestar.

:For other uses of the concept of viruses in Battlestar Galactica, see Virus.

Lymphocytic encephalitis is a viral infectious disease caused by the Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV). Originally carried by rodents, primarily rats, LCMV is no longer lethal to humans, who have developed an immunity to the virus several hundred years ago.

A beacon, believed to have been left by the Thirteenth Tribe on their way to Earth, was contaminated by LCMV. When a basestar discovers the beacon while exploring the Lion's Head Nebula, the Cylons bring the device on board and unleash the virus. Some time later, a team of Colonial marines discovers the drifting basestar and boards the vessel, finding everything save for a small group of humanoids dead. They take the ill Cylons (a Two, a Four, a Five, a Six, and an Eight) prisoner and return to Galactica just as the basestar's self-destruct mechanism activates and destroys the ship.

Though humans are immune, the virus is highly lethal to Cylons because of a bio-electric component that causes a fatal system error within the host. It is theorized that this system error disrupts the management of a humanoid Cylon's immune system, progressively weakening and eventually killing the infected individual. Furthermore, the Cylons speculate that if an infected host is resurrected, the system error will follow, potentially afflicting the Resurrection Ship and eventually the entire Cylon fleet.

This theory forms the basis of a plan devised by Lee Adama to eradicate the Cylon race. By killing the infected Cylons prisoners near a Resurrection Ship, the aforementioned bio-electrical effect would be spread to all Cylons upon download. Ultimately, the plan is thwarted when Karl Agathon kills the prisoners before Galactica can penetrate the Resurrection Ship's upload radius. Agathon does this despite the risk of being executed for treason, as he feels that the genocide of the Cylon race, despite the fact that they had tried to do the same to mankind, is morally wrong(Torn).

During the time that the infected Cylons are held captive aboard Galactica, Dr. Cottle creates a simple vaccine that dramatically reverses the effect of the virus on said Cylons. However, an antibody in their blood breaks down the vaccine's RNA backbone, rendering the treatment useless. Because of that, the Cylons require regular close interval injections of the vaccine, or their condition significantly worsens. If regular injections are provided, an infected Cylon could be kept alive indefinitely.

Unlike the other Cylons Sharon Agathon displays immunity to the virus - although she is exposed to LCMV, the pathogen does not adversely affect her. Cottle postulates that human antibodies were transferred over to Sharon during her pregnancy with her half-human daughter Hera, and that these antibodies are subduing the virus.

Notes
*Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (of which encephalitis is one form) is an actual disease. As in the episode, the illness was spread through rodents on the real-world Earth. The effects on the Cylons appear similar to the symptoms in this CDC document.
*Arguably, the plan to kill all Cylons by exposing the Resurrection ship to the disease is ill-conceived; there is nothing to stop the Cylons from destroying the vessel after it is infected. Additionally, the plan seems to hinge on the idea that once in the Resurrection Ship the disease would spread throughout the Cylon fleet and perhaps even the whole of Cylon-inhabited space.
The Fleet is a convoy of ships sheltering the human survivors of the Cylon attack. The Fleet forms the backdrop of the drama of the Re-imagined Series.

Overview
"The Fleet" originates as a convoy of about 60 commercial and civilian ships in the space surrounding Caprica. Laura Roslin - with the aid of Sharon Valerii - initiates the clustering of stranded vessels in the aftermath of the Cylon invasion of the Twelve Colonies, thus forming the convoy. Twenty of these ships are abandoned to a squadron of attacking Raiders because they either lack FTL drives, or are damaged, like the sublight Botanical Cruiser and Gemenon Liner 1701. The remaining vessels join battlestar Galactica - the only Colonial warship known to have survived the Cylon attack - in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant Ragnar. From here on, Galactica shoulders the role of the Fleet's protector (Miniseries).

Anastasia Dualla explains in "33" that 53 ships have jumped away from an attacking Cylon baseship, with 10 still reporting trouble with their FTL drives. Adding Galactica to this tally, results in a total number of 64 ships.

Saul Tigh's statement in "The Farm" that the 24 ships departing with the Laura Roslin faction represent "almost a third of the fleet", implies that the number of ships in the Fleet is approximately in the mid-70's. However in the opening scene of "Home, Part I" Tigh's response to the number of civilians joining Roslin is "That's over a third of the people in the fleet." Since "the fleet" is used interchangeably to describe both the ships and the civilian populace, this could imply that Tigh's statement in "The Farm" was an estimate of the people who left and not the number of ships lost.

By "The Passage", there are likely fewer ships left in the Fleet because of the Cloud Nine destruction (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II) and the settlement and emergency exodus of New Caprica (Exodus, Part II).

The political and social troubles befalling the Fleet as it wanders through space, serve as a metaphor for all of humanity, since the Fleet literally is what is left of humanity in the television series.

The phrase "the Fleet" functions not only as a signifier for the actual ships of the convoy, but as an indicator of the people on board, and therefore for mankind. Often the term is used to refer to the civilian populations, as opposed to the military personnel of Galactica and Pegasus. Usage of the term "the Fleet" has not gained more than an informal acceptance, as can be seen by President Roslin's continued use of the term President of the Twelve Colonies. This may be interpreted either as an expression of hope that the people of the Fleet will re-establish themselves on a new world, or a psychological inability to accept the Fleet as the only home that humanity will know for a long time.

After three years of searching the Fleet eventually reaches Earth, but are disappointed to find it a devastated wasteland as a result of a nuclear holocaust (Revelations). The fleet leave Earth in search of a new home, with the Rebel Cylon Basestar joining them (Sometimes a Great Notion). By the time of Felix Gaeta's and Tom Zarek's mutiny aboard Galactica (Blood on the Scales), dialogue indicates that the Fleet is down to the very low figure of 35 civilian ships, a surprising loss of about half the initial ships from 33. Most of these losses remain unaccounted for, as very few civilian ships have been seen or heard to be actually lost on screen. Given that the human population has only declined by about one fifth at this point rather than a similar half, this could be a continuity error or retcon, or the remaining ships would have had to nearly double the number of civilians aboard to compensate. It is possible in the context of the dialogue in the episode that the figure of 35 referred only to the number of ships initially loyal to the mutineers.

The Rebel Basestar has now officially joined the Fleet as seen in Someone to Watch Over Me as the Fleet has a new Quorum made out of ship captains and the Rebel Basestar has a representative on the new Quorum, a Six named Sonja.

The Fleet would eventually be abandoned by the Colonials, with their ships guided into the Sun of the new homeworld of the humans. The Rebel baseship was given to the centurions by the Rebel Cylons for them to find their own destiny (Daybreak, Part II)
Non-canonical
Initially, it appears that the production did not have a master list of ships in the first season, as evidenced by the numerical discrepancies to the later retconned numbers in Season 2. The following is a list of ships that have been mentioned in deleted scenes exclusively.

Name                !! Notes
|| Coronis is mentioned in a deleted scene in "Litmus", as a ship carrying people who are unhappy about being last in food ration distribution. However, it is not present on either the master tally board on Galactica or the whiteboard tracker on Colonial One in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II". As Coronis has not been mentioned in any canonical capacity, it is considered totally abandoned by the producers .<br/>
In Greek mythology Coronis is the name of several figures.

Demographics
A few points of information are available concerning the demographics of the Fleet. In "33", before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, there are 5,251 survivors from Sagittaron and 49,998 total survivors. In "Home, Part I", the Laura Roslin faction leaves the Fleet with 18,000 individuals, of which 9,500 ware Gemenese and 6,250 were Capricans. At that time the total population of the Fleet is 47,857.

This information is sparse, but it gives a general idea of the population breakdown of the Fleet if a few assumptions are made for the sake of argument.
*Note that Gemenon and Caprica have more citizens in the Roslin faction alone than Sagittaron has in the entire Fleet. The Twelve Colonies are clearly not represented in equal proportion.
*Before the destruction of the Olympic Carrier, Sagittaron natives make up 10.50% of the Fleet. Solely for the purpose of argument, it is assumed that the Olympic Carriers population breakdown was identical to the rest of the Fleet's and that Sagittaron continues to make up 10.50% of the Fleet's total population.
*The figures from the Roslin faction can be interpreted in several ways:
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 1: All Gemenese and Capricans jump to Kobol with the Roslin faction.
::*Caprica: 6,250 persons (13%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (20%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 27,081 (57%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 2: All Gemenese jump to Kobol with the Roslin faction, lured by the "religion card", but the Caprican portion of the Roslin faction is representative of the Fleet.
::*Caprica: 28,204 persons (59%)
::*Gemenon: 9,500 persons (20%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 5,127 persons (11%)<br clear="both">
<div style="float:right; margin:10px"></div>
:*ASSUMPTION 3: Caprican and Gemenese portions of the Roslin faction are representative of the Fleet.
::*Caprica: 16,617 persons (35%)
::*Gemenon: 25,258 persons (53%)
::*Sagittaron: 5,026 persons (11%)
::*Others: 956 (2%)<br clear="both">
*Although it is plausible that the Caprican population is substantially larger than the other Colonies, as Colonial Heavy 798 is in the vicinity when the attack begins, and is the nucleus around which the Fleet rallies, it is unlikely that the populations of each colony are grossly unequal, or else the Quorum of Twelve would be a very poor system of government. The likeliest scenario is therefore somewhere in between assumptions 1 and 2, with nearly all of the Gemenon population (drawn by the "religion card") and a large portion of the Caprican population leaving with Roslin.
*Alternatively, it is possible that the population of the Colonies are grossly unequal. Although the structure of the Quorum of Twelve appears to maintain at least a fiction that the Colonies are roughly equal, next to nothing is known about how the governmental system of the Colonies was established or how it evolved over time. Indeed, the United States Senate, for example, by design expressly assumes that the various states constituting it are 'equal' even though this is clearly not the case in terms of their respective populations. Furthermore, the fact that a system of government is 'poor' or else not representatively proportional does not mean it cannot actually be implemented and even survive for long periods of time.

As for the population distribution, the population of several ships is known: Galactica (2,693 as of "Water"), the Olympic Carrier (1,345 as of "33"), Astral Queen (1,500 as of "Bastille Day", retconned up from 500 in the Miniseries) and Pyxis (600 when destroyed in "He That Believeth In Me"). There are 176 civilians in the cargo hold of Colonial One in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II". The Fleet is stated at about 75 ships in "Resistance", retconned up from 40 in the Miniseries.
*Going by the 75 ship count, the remaining ships besides Galactica and the Astral Queen each carry about 600 persons on average.
*The 23 ships that leave with the Laura Roslin faction, apart from the Astral Queen, would have an average population of about 720 persons per ship.

The Fleet's population has declined by about 8,000 since the above.

Notes
*Unofficially, many viewers refer to the Fleet as the "RTF"; "Rag Tag Fleet", or more fully, "RTFF." These nicknames come from the term "Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet," a name used in the opening credits voice over of the Original Series (performed by series creator Lorne Greene), describing the civilian refugee fleet.
* In the Miniseries, astute viewers may recognize three spacecraft with notable resemblances of ships from other SF universes. The first two of these ships aren't considered a canonical part of the series or the Fleet, but their appearance adds a bit of humor and pays homage to other notable science fiction and their creative staff.
:* Serenity, the central ship from the TV series Firefly and the motion picture Serenity, appears briefly in the sky outside the window of a doctor's office where viewers first see Laura Roslin. The ship does not appear in the Fleet.
:* The original USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) from the original Star Trek TV series makes a cameo in the last shot of the Fleet as Elosha chants a prayer in the memorial service near the end of the Miniseries. Look to the upper right corner for the ship in a still frame. All Season 1 opening credits use this shot, so Enterprise makes a very quick appearance with each of the first 13 episodes (This is best viewed from the Season 1 DVD set).
:*The ill-fated Botanical Cruiser in the Miniseries was added in homage to the Agro Ship from the Original Series, which in turn were the re-used models from the SF film Silent Running, a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru John Dykstra worked on a few years prior. At least one FTL-capable version of this ship survives and exists in the Fleet (The Passage).
