'''Kara "Starbuck" Thrace''' is a gifted [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] pilot, with an attitude that has hindered her career in the Colonial Fleet. However, [[William Adama]] has confidence in Thrace's military skills, and she greatly aids the Fleet inside and out of the cockpit. She is the last [[Commander Air Group|Commander, Air Group]] (CAG) of ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', and mysteriously vanishes in a region that will later be known as Tanzania on [[Earth (RDM)#A_New_Earth|the second Earth]] shortly after the Fleet's arrival on the planet ([[Daybreak, Part II]]).

*Thrace's mother [[Socrata Thrace|Socrata]] was a former [[Colonial Marine Corps]] sergeant major. She beat her daughter so frequently that Thrace came to accept pain as a way of life ("[[Flesh and Bone]]", "[[Maelstrom]]").
*Her father [[Dreilide Thrace|Dreilide]] was a pianist and composer. Kara seems to have been closer to him than with her mother ([[Valley of Darkness]], [[Someone to Watch Over Me]]) until he left them.
*Thrace left home to join the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|military]]. During her training, she was disciplined for insubordinate conduct towards [[Mike Gibbons|superior officers]].

*Thrace's attitude quickly runs her afoul of Colonel [[Saul Tigh]], ''Galactica's'' [[executive officer]]. Their open mutual dislike of one another leads to the point where blows are exchanged, with Thrace ending up in the brig. After the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]] she is released from the brig and returns to duty as Viper pilot.
*Thrace manages to keep two of three nuclear missiles from striking ''Galactica'' in their first Cylon sortie, and saves Lee from doom in an innovative maneuver in the [[Battle of Ragnar Anchorage]].

She disobeys orders to retrieve the [[Arrow of Apollo]] at the request of President Roslin, since she discovered Commander Adama's speech concerning knowledge of the location of Earth was a lie. She [[FTL|jump]]s to Caprica ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]), landing in [[Delphi]] in the captured Cylon [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raider]], depriving the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] of the valuable military asset.
*In the [[Delphi Museum of the Colonies]] with the Arrow, she is violently attacked by a copy of [[Number Six]]. Despite being heavily outmatched in the fight, Thrace luckily defeats the Cylon.

*Thrace and Agathon meet a [[Caprica Resistance|resistance movement]] on Caprica. Thrace and [[Samuel Anders]] strike up a rapport as fellow [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid]] players and end up having sex.
*During planning to steal a [[Heavy Raider]], Thrace is shot in a military action, waking up in a hospital on Caprica. Thrace is told by her doctor, [[Simon]], that Anders died from wounds he suffered in getting Thrace to safety.
*Thrace discovers that Simon is working with a [[Number Six|known humanoid Cylon]]. She overhears that the next day he plans to extract her ovaries for use in the Cylon's attempts to study and create a hybrid Cylon/human embryo. Simon also makes the mistake of calling Thrace by her callsign, Starbuck, which she had never revealed.

*As a result of the battle events, Thrace is left without backup as she walks to the ''Pegasus'' CIC to shoot Cain, obviously afraid and apprehensive. When Commander Adama calls, Thrace slowly moves her hand to her sidearm but, to her relief, Adama does not give the kill order and cryptically instructs her to stand down ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).
*Thrace and [[Louanne Katraine|Louanne "Kat" Katraine]] are involved in the protection of a mining operation from periodic Raider attacks. One Raider, nicknamed [[Scar (Raider)|Scar]], fuels an intensive rivalry for the pilot's "top gun" honor. Thrace, still depressed over her inability to convince Fleet command to initiate a rescue for Samuel Anders and his resistance, drinks heavily and obsesses over removing Scar from the sky, even at the cost of her life. Fortunately, Thrace realizes the futility of her actions, and works together with Katraine to destroy the remarkably dangerous Raider ([[Scar]]).
*A few weeks later, Thrace takes leave on ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' when she was dragooned into rescuing Lee and several other ''Galactica'' crew and residents after terrorists take them hostage in exchange for the incarcerated [[Sharon Agathon|Sharon Agathon neé Valerii]]. Thrace gathers intelligence on the situation, but her cover is blown. In the retreating firefight, Lee is caught in the crossfire. After the situation is resolved, Thrace intended to sit at Lee's bedside, only to discover that Dualla beat her to it ([[Sacrifice]]).
*Later, Thrace is assigned to ''Pegasus'' as a flight trainer. Though the pilots like her, Commander [[Barry Garner]] does not, eventually confining her to quarters for "insubordination." Following the [[Battle of the Binary Star System|ill-fated rescue and retreat]] from a Cylon ambush (where Thrace leads the fighters) and [[Battle of the Guardian Basestar|after a search, rescue and destroy mission to a Cylon-war era basestar]], Thrace informs Lee—now commander of ''Pegasus''—that she was taking over his old CAG post aboard ''Galactica'', joking that she has a problem with her commander wanting to send her off to get killed ("[[The Captain's Hand]]", "[[Razor]]").
*Thrace gets her wish: the Caprica rescue is approved, and she leads a large Raptor squadron to the planet. The group soon met up with Anders, who reports that their HQ had been destroyed and Thrace's timing was just perfect. A squad of Centurions ambush and pin down the group moments later ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).
*Still pinned down from attack fire, Thrace and Anders agree to kill each other to avoid capture and internment at a [[Farms|farm]]. But the attack stops, and a [[Cavil|man]] appears, praising the [[Lords of Kobol|Gods]] as he announces that the Cylons not only have ceased fire, but are abandoning the Twelve Colonies. Thrace isn't really surprised to discover that the man, known as Brother [[Cavil]], was a Cylon upon their return to the Fleet.

The following morning she quickly married Anders in a ceremony near the river, despite declaring to Lee just the previous evening that she had no intention of getting married. This caused a rift between Kara and Lee that lasted for well over a year ([[Unfinished Business]]).
*Life on New Caprica tempered Thrace, and she often behaved in ways Thrace never would have, including hugging Colonel Tigh and pampering Anders during his bout with an illness.
*She watches in horror at the sudden arrival of hundreds of Cylon ships in the sky over New Caprica. A few of ''Galactica's'' former crew gather near Thrace, looking to her for guidance. She responds the only way she knows how: "Fight 'em until we can't" ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

=== The New Caprica Ordeal and Her Death ===

*After Baltar's surrender of New Caprica, Conoy keeps Thrace prisoner in an apartment located within the Cylon-built [[New Caprica Detention Center]] in an attempt to convince Thrace that she loves him and also convert her to the [[Cylon Religion|Cylon monotheistic religion]]. She repeatedly kills Conoy a total of five times in an attempt to convince him to let her go ("[[Occupation]]", "[[Precipice]]").
*Conoy introduces Thrace to a small child named [[Kacey Brynn|Kacey]], who appears to be approximately two to three years in age, whom he claims is their biological daughter, created using one of Thrace's extracted ovaries ([[The Farm]]) and his genetic material. Conflicted, Thrace leaves the child unattended, which later results in Kacey falling down the apartment's stairs ([[Precipice]]). After the fall, Thrace begins to change her attitude towards the child and begins to offer affection towards Conoy ("[[Precipice]]", "[[Exodus, Part I]]").
*Upon her return to ''Galactica'' after Admiral Adama's [[Battle of New Caprica|daring rescue attempt]], Thrace heartbreakingly discovers that Kacey was simply another manipulation on Conoy's part; Kacey is merely a human child whom the Cylons had abducted from [[Julia Brynn|her mother]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).
*Bearing the psychological scars of her four month ordeal with Leoben and Kacey, Thrace is recruited by [[Diana Seelix]] as a last minute replacement juror in the [[Circle]] after Anders' resignation. Thrace's involvement in the Circle precipitates the breakup of her marriage with Anders. Initially wondering about the legality of the tribunal, she is the fifth vote to find [[Felix Gaeta]] guilty of treason and collaboration. Later, when Gaeta is about to be killed in one of ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> [[launch tubes (RDM)|launch tubes]], she demands that he beg for his life. Thrace physically assaults him and goes down the litany of "lies" that Gaeta told her earlier about him helping the [[New Caprica Resistance|insurgency]]. As she does so, [[Galen Tyrol]], one of the Circle's jurors, overhears this and confirms the story. In a sense of confusion after learning that Gaeta was telling the truth, Thrace leaves the launch tube ([[Collaborators]]).
*During a combat exercise between Vipers, Thrace breaks formation and collides with another pilot, forcing an end to the war games and causing Lee to revoke her flight status. Later, at her bunk she is met by Kacey and her mother, whom she dismisses, telling Kacey's mother not to visit her again. In the pilots' rec room, Thrace and Colonel Tigh begin to sow dissent between the survivors of New Caprica and the crew that stayed behind on ''Galactica'', insinuating that those who stayed behind did not suffer like those on New Caprica did, and that the crew of ''Galactica'' took too long to organize a rescue. Admiral Adama, upon learning of this from Karl Agathon, confronts Thrace and Tigh on their behavior. He challenges them to shoot him, as their constant complaining is tantamount to pulling the trigger. When neither do, Adama throws Thrace off her chair and demands that both she and Tigh shape up and move on with their lives. Spurred by Adama's words, Thrace cuts her hair and returns to duty. Later, in uniform, she visits Kacey and her mother on the [[Dogsville|converted hangar deck]] ([[Torn]]).
*Thrace enters an affair with Lee, rekindling their romance on New Caprica ([[Unfinished Business]]). Both Anders and Lee's wife, Lieutenant [[Anastasia Dualla]], are more than vaguely aware of the pair's sexual tension. Lee ends the affair and reconciles with his wife despite still being in love with Thrace, but Thrace refuses to give Anders any further attention than a periodic sexual fling.
*Thrace is involved with the defense of the incorrectly called "[[Temple of Five]]" but is severely injured, leaving her rescuer, Dualla, to return them to ''Galactica'' ([[Rapture]]). Agathon recognizes the strange circular [[Eye of Jupiter|mandala]] in the Temple, created 4,000 years before, and its resemblance to a symbol that Thrace painted in her apartment. When shown the symbol, the recovering Thrace is darkly reminded of Leoben's prophesy.
*During refueling operations above a gas giant, Thrace is continually attracted to what she believes is a Cylon contact, which she chases to find a planetary storm that resembles the mandala. She dives into it, almost losing control before coming to her senses and returning.
*Command staff and Thrace question her competency to continue flying, but Lee volunteers encouragement and offers to fly as her wingman on her next [[Combat Air Patrol|CAP]].
*Thrace finds herself attracted by another apparent Cylon contact. As she descended, her Viper is struck by debris and she, while unconscious, experiences a revelation about her mother, [[Socrata Thrace]], and guided through the vision by what looks to be a Leoben copy.
*Starbuck regains consciousness but chooses to continue her descent despite Lee's desperate pleas to ascend. "I'll see you on the other side (...) Just let me go" were her last words as her Viper explodes. A grief-stricken Lee tells [[CIC]] that he did not see any ejection ([[Maelstrom]]).
*While preparing for a Cylon engagement near the [[Ionian nebula]], Lee (who has [[Crossroads, Part I|since left]] the Colonial Military) detects a bogey on [[DRADIS]]. While he searches for the target, Lee finds himself momentarily in a cat-and-mouse chase game with the mysterious target. As Lee attempts to regain sight of the bogey, it positions itself next to his Viper.

=== Return from the Dead and Suspicion ===

*The [[Starbuck's Viper|pristine Viper Mark II]] that comes alongside is flown by Thrace herself. A shocked and confused [[Lee Adama]] (now a civilian) listens to the apparently-resurrected Kara Thrace, who tells him that she has been to [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]] and she has returned to take the Fleet to it ([[Crossroads, Part II]]).
*After the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula|battle at the nebula]], she returns to ''Galactica'' where everyone is astounded to see her alive. While everyone believed her dead for over two months, only several hours have passed for her. She has returned with recon photography of [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], but no navigational data or knowledge of how she got there. Further complicating her claim is the fact that her Viper is nearly pristine, as if it had just been built. Despite her passing a medical examination by Doctor [[Sherman Cottle]], almost everyone, including Thrace herself, wonders if she could be a Cylon.
*When the Fleet jumps further away from the Ionian Nebula, she experiences headaches and says that she is losing the intuitive feeling of the way to Earth. Desperate to lead the Colonials there, she breaks into Adama's quarters and confronts Roslin at gun point ([[He That Believeth In Me]]).
*Thrace is eventually subdued by [[Colonial Marines]] and imprisoned in the [[brig]]. Lee visits Thrace in the brig and tells her that he believes her. Thrace is happy that he does and they share a kiss before Lee leaves for ''[[Colonial One]]''. Although not sure what to make of her claims, Admiral Adama releases her later, and gives her command of ''[[Demetrius]]'', and a crew including [[Karl Agathon]] and Samuel Anders, telling her to try to find Earth ([[Six of One]]).
*Thrace irritates her crew by frequent, unexplained course changes and rarely leaving her quarters, where she holes herself up to study star charts. When her husband confronts her about her command style and their marriage, she tells him that she is not the same person he married and tries to throw him out of her cabin. Finally, they come upon the cockpit of the crashed Viper, with its pilot still inside. Thrace is horrified to discover that the carcass inside the cockpit is hers. Thrace reveals to Conoy that the [[Hybrid]] aboard the rebel baseship called her the "Harbinger of Death." Conoy has no explanation for any of this and flees the scene, leaving Thrace alone to wonder who or what she really is. Thrace later retrieves the dog tags and wedding ring from the body. She then cremates the body and returns to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. She does not tell anyone what she has discovered ([[Sometimes a Great Notion]]).
*After ''Galactica'' leaves Earth, Thrace is still trying to come to terms with her discoveries there. *Thrace turns to see a group of marines and civilians led by [[Charlie Connor]] run past her, and she follows them. She sees the group break into a weapons locker and arm themselves. She hears Connor giving his men orders to take the [[hangar deck]].
*Thrace rushes back to her barracks and grabs her weapons. She then tries to warn the CIC, but Gaeta blocks her calls. Realizing that Gaeta is also involved, Thrace takes off for the hangar deck.
*She arrives at the hangar deck just in time to rescue [[Lee Adama]] from Connor and his men, who are being assisted by [[Margaret Edmondson|Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson]] and [[Hamish McCall|Hamish "Skulls" McCall]]. Thrace kills one of the marines and wounds Skulls, forcing the others to back off. She and Lee then hurry away.
*Thrace and Lee take refuge inside a storage compartment. Lee doesn't think they can defeat the mutiny alone. Thrace responds by kissing him. She then says that this is the first time in weeks that she feels right.
*Thrace and Lee head for the CIC. They find that the mutiny has spread all across the ship. They arrive at Admiral Adama's quarters, where they meet [[Laura Roslin]]. After learning of the mutiny, Roslin decides that she must come out and address the Fleet. However, the ship's communications are down, and the only working [[wireless]] transmitter on the ship is in [[Gaius Baltar]]'s possession.
*Thrace, Adama, and Roslin make it to Baltar's compartment, where they find [[Galen Tyrol]] organizing a defense. Tyrol tells them that Admiral Adama has been arrested and is being escorted to the brig. Tyrol also tells them about a secondary storage airlock they can use to escape the ship. Thrace and Adama head off to rescue the admiral.
*At the brig, they find that [[William Adama]] and [[Saul Tigh]] have already escaped custody. They have also taken the rebel marine, [[Allan Nowart]], prisoner. Thrace tries to kill Nowart, but Adama thwarts her. As Nowart flees, Thrace argues that the mutineers are no longer his men, and as such are the enemy and that they can't afford to take prisoners.
*Thrace, Tigh and the Adamas arrive at the secondary storage airlock, where they find Tyrol, Roslin and Baltar waiting. A [[Raptor]] piloted by an [[Eight]] docks. After Roslin and Baltar board the Raptor, Thrace, Lee and Tyrol head off to continue the fight against Gaeta and [[Thomas Zarek]]'s forces ([[The Oath]]).
*Lee and Thrace head off to free the captives held in the brig, while Tyrol goes to sabotage the ship's FTL drive. They take out the mutineers guarding the brig and free Tigh, [[Sharon Agathon]], [[Karl Agathon]], [[Hera Agathon]], [[Caprica Six]] and [[Samuel Anders]].
*During the escape, a firefight ensues and Anders is shot in the back of the head by a mutineer. He is not killed but is in dire need of medical attention. Thrace yells at the others to go without her and she starts dragging Anders towards the infirmary.
*Thrace eventually exhausts herself trying to carry Anders and she collapses. Marine [[Parr]] escorting [[Romo Lampkin]] appears; Thrace attempts to shoot Parr, but her gun is empty— however, Lampkin suddenly stabs the marine twice in the neck with a pen, killing him.
*Thrace asks Lampkin to help her carry Anders to the infirmary. Lampkin is reluctant but eventually agrees to help ([[Blood on the Scales]]).
*In the immediate aftermath of the mutiny, Thrace learns from Doctor [[Sherman Cottle]] that the bullet is still stuck in Anders' skull. Anders' suppressed memories of his Cylon life back on Earth are also triggered. To Thrace's disappointment, Anders does not have an explanation as to who she really is or how she apparently came back from the dead.
*Cottle manages to remove the bullet, which he gives to Thrace. However, when Thrace goes to speak with Anders, she discovers that he has zero brain activity—which the medical personnel are unable to explain ([[No Exit]]).

*When Admiral Adama comes to see Anders—now acting as ''Galactica's'' Hybrid—to find out the location of [[The Colony]], Thrace reveals to him that she has tried to make sense out of the notes by assigning numbers to them, but has had no luck in understanding it. She also tells him that she is dead, that she burned her own dead body on [[Sometimes A Great Notion| Earth]] and has no idea what she is. Adama tells her he knows what she is: she's his daughter. ==Lords of Kobol, Hear My Prayer==

Despite her tough, rebellious exterior, Thrace is deeply spiritual and possesses a great deal of faith in the [[Lords of Kobol (RDM)|Lords of Kobol]]. She usually prays in moments of mourning or desperation, such as when she thinks Lee is dead ([[Miniseries]]), when she is trapped on a desolate moon with a broken knee and low oxygen ([[You Can't Go Home Again]]), and when she discovers she's in Cylon captivity ([[The Farm]]). This spirituality is put to the test as a series of events lead her towards a mysterious destiny.

From early in her life, Kara Thrace has been guided through her mother's actions for a special role in life, a plot point that begins with a [[Leoben Conoy]] copy in the Season 1 episode, "[[Flesh and Bone]]". In "[[Maelstrom]]", the character dies, but reappears as a guide for the Fleet at the end of Season 3.

A Cylon [[First Hybrid|Hybrid]], speaking to Major [[Kendra Shaw]] moments before their deaths, warns her that Thrace is the herald of the apocalypse and the harbinger of death, that she would lead the human race to its end, and that she is not to be followed ([[Razor]]). Similarly, another [[Hybrid]] describes her as the harbinger of death, and she would lead them to salvation and destruction ([[Faith]]).

This becomes the case, as she leads ''Galactica'' (and the Fleet) to a second, new planet the Colonials dub "Earth." There, both Colonials and both races of Cylon (the Kobollian-based "[[Final Five]]" and the remaining models from the "[[Significant Seven]]") are saved. However, as their blend in with the native humans on the new Earth, the distinctive natures of Colonial human and Cylon creations blur and merge. In a sense, the blurring results in the "death" of both races as a new human race begins. [[Hera Agathon]]'s body, a perfect human/Cylon merging, is later represented as the Mitochondrial Eve for the humans on the New Earth ([[Daybreak, Part II]]).

Lee Adama is the elder son of [[Carolanne Adama|Carolanne]] and William Adama. He and his his younger brother, Zak, were raised largely by his mother on [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] following his parents' divorce when he was eight.

As a child, Adama often visited his grandfather, [[Joseph Adama]], and read the law books in his study; he often followed his grandfather's cases, never understanding why Joseph Adama defended the worst of humanity ([[TRS]]: "[[The Son Also Rises]]").

Despite his father's estrangement from the family, Adama followed in his footsteps and joined the Colonial military after college, graduating third in his class at the military academy and applying to flight school.

In flight school, Adama proved himself a gifted and natural pilot, hampered only by his tendency to over-intellectualize, a trait instilled by his mother who encouraged him to read widely and think freely, such as reading the banned texts by the renegade [[Tom Zarek]] while at college ([[TRS]]: "[[Bastille Day]]").

After flight school, Adama was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to pilot the [[Viper Mark VII]]. He was also introduced to [[Kara Thrace]], a flight instructor who had become involved with Zak. The three frequently spent time together, and Adama and Thrace formed a friendship ([[Miniseries]]).

Two years prior to the Fall, Zak died while on a routine Viper mission, the cause attributed to pilot error. However, Lee Adama chose to blame the mishap on his father, believing Zak had been pushed by him into following his footsteps ([[Miniseries]]).

Estranged from his father, Lee sought to build a career apart from William Adama. This decision placed a heavy strain on his friendship with Kara Thrace, who got assigned to ''Galactica''.

Adama spent much time on Caprica and was engaged to a woman named [[Gianne]]. When she told him she was pregnant with their child, he ran from her due to his own family issues. Before he could speak with her again he received orders to take part in ''Galactica'''s decommissioning ceremony ([[TRS]]: "[[Black Market]]").

Despite having a natural knack for piloting, acceptance to test pilot school and being "well on his way to commanding a battlestar someday", Adama tells [[Frank Bruno]] at the [[Caprica Transfer Station]] that he is considering leaving the Colonial Fleet, as he is disinterested in achieving dreams that were his father's alone ([[TRS]]: "[[Razor]]", [[List of Deleted Scenes (RDM)#Razor|deleted scene]]).

As a part of the ceremonies, Lee Adama grudgingly participates in a final Viper flyby salute, doing little to hide his true feelings from the moment he arrives on the battlestar. Matters are not helped when he discovers he will fly in the restored [[Viper Mark II]] his father flew during the Cylon War ([[Miniseries]]).

Things worsen after the PR official aboard ''Galactica'', [[Aaron Doral]], sees Captain Adama's presence on ''Galactica'' as a major PR opportunity and has Adama and his father pose for pictures together. Midway through their return to [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]], Adama and the crew of ''Colonial Heavy 798'' hear of the Cylon attacks on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], and soon find themselves under direct attack, which he is able to thwart. Adama quickly becomes one of Laura Roslin's unofficial advisers, aiding her in her self-appointed rescue mission. Adama's annoyance of his father's old Viper comes back to haunt him when [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]], returning from her unexpected rescue mission on Caprica and disastrous attack on two [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Cylon Raiders]], notes to him that other Vipers and other modern Colonial spacecraft like his Mark VII were [[Command Navigation Program|easily destroyed]] by Cylon attacks.

Adama again saves ''Colonial Heavy 798'' from a nuclear missile attack with a failed experiment he toyed with in [[War College]], using [[EMP]] coils kept in the cargo hold to make it look like the ship has been destroyed. He supports Roslin in her rescue efforts, persuading her to lead the [[FTL]]-capable ships to follow ''Galactica'' to [[Ragnar Anchorage]].

As the ranking pilot aboard ''Galactica'', and despite his relative inexperience, Adama finds himself appointed [[CAG]] by Colonel [[Saul Tigh]].

Apollo leads a Viper squadron in the [[Battle of Ragnar Anchorage]], keeping the Cylon Raiders at bay while the civilian [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] jumps to safety. His ship is badly damaged during in the battle, and is about to be destroyed by a Cylon missile when the missile is intercepted and shot by Starbuck's highly-accurate marksmanship. His Viper eventually loses power as the battle draws to a close and ''Galactica'' is preparing to retreat. Starbuck saves him with a crazy idea and her flying skills, bringing them back to ''Galactica'' shortly before the battlestar jumps away.

Adama's work as Roslin's "special advisor" to further help her understand military matters does not sit well with his father, who is still harboring some reservations about Roslin ([[TRS]]: "[[Bastille Day]]").

In the weeks following the Cylon attack, Adama finds time to re-evaluate his relationship with his father - due in no small part to Starbuck's admission of her involvement in Zak's acceptance as a fighter pilot and his subsequent death. Father and son grow somewhat closer - even standing shoulder-to-shoulder when Starbuck is missing in action and both going to great lengths to save her ([[TRS]]: "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]"). Even so, Adama's former self-doubts and moodiness are not easily overcome and sometimes come back to haunt him when he is tasked to fill a role that others are unsure he can manage. As a Viper pilot, Adama is able to escape from Starbuck's shadow, proving himself capable in unconventional and skilled flying in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]] ([[TRS]]: "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]").

After the tylium asteroid mission, Adama matures enormously, emerging from his shell as a somewhat disillusioned officer and becomes a practical leader who now comfortably straddles his responsibilities as [[CAG]] of ''Galactica'' with his duties as advisor to Roslin. With few issues with either Roslin or his father, Adama demonstrates his maturity particularly well in his handling of security arrangements for the initial meeting of Roslin's [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]] aboard the luxury liner ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' ([[TRS]]: "[[Colonial Day]]").

=== The Inner Conflicts at Kobol ===

Eventually, Adama's beliefs in the need for democratic representation and civil government brings him in direct conflict with orders given him by his father. During the arrest of Laura Roslin following her [[Arrow of Apollo|interference with military operations]], Captain Adama draws his gun on [[Saul Tigh|Colonel Tigh]] in a direct act of mutiny, protesting his father's removal of Roslin from office. Arrested together with Roslin, Adama watches helplessly in [[CIC]] as [[Sharon Valerii|Lieutenant Valerii]] shoots his father at point blank range, seriously wounding him ([[TRS]]: "[[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]").

Adama is temporarily furloughed by Colonel Tigh so that he can continue to carry out his duties. For a time, Commander Adama's initiative lives on through his son. Young Adama leads a fight with Cylons to buy time for ''Galactica'' to find its proper bearings to the civilian Fleet ([[TRS]]: "[[Scattered]]"), and leads a team of [[Marines]] to stop [[Cylon Centurion]]s that boarded the ship ([[TRS]]: "[[Valley of Darkness]]"). After that, Adama continues his initiative and leads a [[SAR]] mission with two [[Raptors]] to retrieve a stranded survey team on the surface of Kobol ([[TRS]]: "[[Fragged]]").

Adama's desire to let democracy work without overt military action comes to a head once more as he plots, with a handful of others, to free Roslin and smuggle her away from ''Galactica'' ([[TRS]]: "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]"). Before he leaves, he apologizes to his unconscious Commander Adama at his bedside for what he is about to do: Leave with Roslin and a [[Laura Roslin faction|faction]] of ships to search for data on Earth on Kobol. Commander Adama begins to awaken just as young Adama leaves his side.

On ''[[Astral Queen]]'', Adama is so happy to see Kara Thrace has returned safely from Caprica with the [[Arrow of Apollo]] that he hugs and also impulsively kisses her, pleasantly surprising Thrace. Moments later, as the Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii enters, Adama instantly grabs the known [[humanoid Cylon]] in anger and would have killed her if Helo and Roslin did not intervene.

Later, with their military protocols and attitudes temporarily relaxed, Adama playfully teases the brooding Kara Thrace by stealing a [[pyramid (RDM)|pyramid]] ball she took as a keepsake from her time with [[Samuel Anders|Anders]] on Caprica. He returns the ball after sensing her depressed mood and tells her that he would be happy to listen to what was on her mind. In the same conversation, he lets it slip out that he loves Thrace. Amused, Thrace cheers up a bit and teases Adama, telling him that there are no take-backs on what he said ([[TRS]]: "[[Home, Part I]]").

Adama and Thrace join President Roslin and her other supporters on their quest to find the [[Tomb of Athena]] on Kobol. When Cylon Centurions ambush the group along an ancient trail, Adama and Thrace work well together in the fight, complementing each other for their fine shooting.

Adama's reunion with his recovered father on Kobol further mends the wounds between them, both politically and personally. Like Captain Adama had done on ''Queen'', his father reacts violently to the existence of a another copy of Valerii, leaving Captain Adama in the awkward position of defending her from his father. In the virtual planetarium created by the Tomb of Athena, Adama is the party member that completes the mystery of interpreting how to use the constellations as viewed from Earth to make a flight path. He spots the [[w:Lagoon Nebula|Lagoon Nebula]] in the sky where the Scorpius constellation resided, a celestial body known to the Colonials which gives them a reference point to navigate to Earth. His father confirms Adama's observation, noting that the nebula is far away from their current location at Kobol.

After the Fleet's reunification, Lee Adama is fully restored to flight status and his position as the CAG ([[TRS]]: "[[Final Cut]]"). Apollo doubts that [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] could successfully complete a prototype fighter later known as the [[Blackbird]], but in the end aids in its first test flight with Starbuck. Around this time, Adama begins to develop an attraction to [[Anastasia Dualla]] ([[TRS]]: "[[Flight of the Phoenix]]").

===Reassignment===

Apollo is on [[Combat Air Patrol|CAP]] when the [[Mercury class battlestar|battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' reunites with ''Galactica'' and is one of the first to see it up close. Soon afterwards, friction develops between Adama and the CAG of ''Pegasus'', Captain [[Cole Taylor]]. Taylor feels that Adama's pilots are undisciplined and implies that Adama has his position through his father's influence. Taylor recommends that Adama have his pilots focus on keeping a "killcount" of Raiders to encourage competition between his pilots, while Adama stresses that his first priority is to make sure that all of his pilots merely survive another day.

To Adama's shock, Admiral [[Helena Cain]] re-assigns him and Lt. Thrace to ''Pegasus'', under Taylor's command. Cain believes that having Commander Adama's son in the role of CAG was a mistake that has clouded Commander Adama's judgment, as young Adama has been insubordinate and even [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II|mutinous]] in the past. For an upcoming scouting mission against the Cylon fleet following them, Taylor orders Adama to perform the humiliating task of co-piloting a Raptor. Annoyed, Adama orders Starbuck to take the [[Blackbird]] and perform the mission alone. When Commander Adama and Admiral Cain turn on each other, Apollo is away in Taylor's Raptor on his recon mission ([[TRS]]: "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]").

As the two battlestar commanders begin sparring with Vipers, ''Pegasus'' orders Taylor to relieve Adama of duty. Taylor pulls his sidearm and takes away Adama's. Now weaponless and with nothing more to do than to ride along, Adama asks permission to head to the rear of the Raptor. While Taylor is busy, Adama secretly communicates with Starbuck over [[wireless]] text messages. This gives away her position to the Fleet, who think her to be a Cylon Raider. When the Vipers are ordered to disengage and pursue her instead, Starbuck manages to identify herself before things get out of hand.

Cain feels that persecuting young Adama for authorizing Thrace's mission would be odd since she is promoting Thrace for her work on her recon mission. Thrace successfully returns Adama to flight status, but demoted to lieutenant ([[TRS]]: "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]").

=== Battle of the Resurrection Ship ===

While Thrace plans an assault on the Resurrection Ship and the two [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]s defending it, she tells Adama that his father has ordered her to kill Cain after the battle, and asks Adama to watch her back. Outraged, Adama confronts his father with this, shocked to learn it was President Roslin's idea. Thrace assigns Adama the specific task of disabling the Resurrection Ship's [[FTL]] drive by sneaking up on it in the [[Blackbird]] and destroying it with a precision missile strike. Apollo succeeds, but the Blackbird collides with a [[Raptor]]. Apollo is able to eject, but the Blackbird is destroyed. Alive, but not unscathed, Apollo floats in space watching the battle take place around him. A tear in his [[flight suit]] leaves him almost out of air. While having the means to stop the leak, he is overcome with a sense of sadness and nihilism, having learned that the two persons closest to him, Roslin and his father, resort to assassination to solve their conflict with Cain. Although hearing Dualla over the [[wireless]], he decides to let go and die, but is found by a [[SAR|SAR Raptor]] and resuscitated. Adama becomes despondent and distant from his friends and family after his near-death experience. In the pilot's locker room, Thrace tells Adama "Let's just be glad that we both came back alive, alright?" to which Adama responds "That's just it, Kara, I didn't want to make it back alive" ([[TRS]]: "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]").

=== The Black Market ===

After President Roslin is saved from her illness, she begins trying to put down the Fleet's [[Black market (organization)|black market]]. New ''Pegasus'' commander [[Jack Fisk]] is soon murdered, leaving the elder Adama (now an Admiral) to assign his son to investigate. With his association with prostitute [[Shevon]] and her daughter [[Paya]] on ''[[Cloud 9]]'', [[Anastasia Dualla]] asks where the relationship between the two of them is heading. After he hesitates, Dualla takes it to mean it is over. Rushing to help Shevon after her call for help, the captain is ambushed by Phelan's men. Waking up from the attack, he finds the Fisk's murder weapon, and the body of Fisk's murderer.

With some help from [[Tom Zarek]], unwilling to accept the neatly-wrapped up case of Fisk's murderer or the missing Shevon, Adama finds the black market's main ship, ''[[Prometheus (ship)|Prometheus]]''. He finds Paya and other children locked in a storage room. He confronts Phelan, who tells him a black market is necessary, since some supplies may never reach needy people any other way. After Phelan admits running a child prostitution ring, Adama shoots Phelan, and tells his bodyguards that the market can continue operations, unless it keeps holding back essential medicines, begins killing, or returns to child prostitution.

Shevon refuses to see Adama anymore, realizing that Adama has tried to use her and Paya as replacements in his mind for his lost fiancé [[Gianne]] and their unborn child, saying that she can never be her ([[TRS]]: "[[Black Market]]").

===Friendly Fire===

While on leave to ''Cloud 9'' with Dualla, a group of terrorists seize a bar and demand the second copy of [[Sharon Valerii]] for execution, while they hold hostage approximately a dozen people, including Dualla, [[Billy Keikeya]], [[Ellen Tigh]] and Adama. The captain secretly sabotages the bar's carbon dioxide sensors to appear as if it were leaking atmosphere. The sabotage enables Captain Thrace to enter the bar and gather intelligence on the situation, but her cover is blown by Ellen Tigh, and she is forced to draw her weapons. One shot accidentally hits Adama in the chest. After escaping, Thrace breaks down crying for having shot her friend; Dualla is able to care for Adama long enough for him to survive to ''Galactica's'' sickbay, and later sits at his bedside while he recovers. Thrace watches, but is unsure what to do and leaves ([[TRS]]: "[[Sacrifice]]").

===A Worthy Command ===

Adama finds himself promoted to Major and assigned to [[Pegasus (RDM)|''Pegasus]]''. He is assigned to the ship by Admiral Adama to assess ''Pegasus's'' crew and the the new commander [[Barry Garner]], the ship's former Chief Engineer.

His relationship with Dualla has become intimate following his promotion and recovery. Kara Thrace, still ''Pegasus'' CAG, soon comes to blows with Garner is confined to her quarters. When visiting her, Adama chides her for her behavior, stating that he is sick of cleaning up after her all the time. He confronts her about the friendly fire incident, resulting in a moment of uncomfortable silence, before the talk returns to business.

Against orders from Admiral Adama, Garner takes ''Pegasus'' in to search for two Raptors missing during a recon mission into a binary star system. His impulsive and unwise efforts result in the battlestar's [[Battle of the Binary Star System|ambush by three Cylon basestars]]. With the FTL drive damaged after successive nuclear missile strikes, Garner relegates command to Major Adama and heads below to help in FTL repairs. After a moment's hesitation (perhaps thinking what his father would do), Adama orders the forward guns to fire on the nearest basestar, critically damaging the basestar and forcing its retreat, while commanding the battlestar's fighters (led by Starbuck) to guard embattled areas damaged from nuclear pummeling. Adama's attack buys time for Commander Garner to repair the FTL drive, enabling ''Pegasus'' to escape back to the Fleet and relative safety.

Admiral Adama debriefs his son, who gave Garner a lot of credit for saving the ship, despite their disagreements. When asked about Garner's flaws, Lee says that he only knew machines, while command is about people. His father tells him to keep that in mind and gives him command of ''Pegasus'', together with a promotion to commander; possibly giving him his old rank insignia ([[TRS]]: "[[The Captain's Hand]]").

Sometime later, Adama wishes Thrace good luck in rescuing [[Samuel Anders]] and the rest of the [[Caprica Resistance|resistance group on Caprica]], despite his clear personal feelings towards her. After Thrace and Anders' return, Adama attempts to introduce himself politely, but is hampered by the couple's amorous and highly drunken behavior. When Thrace gives a rude comment, Adama bows out the area, beginning a quiet but palpable rift in their friendship ([[TRS]]: "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]").

Four months later, Commander Adama and his [[Executive Officer|XO]], Lieutenant Dualla, are granted shore leave to attend a groundbreaking ceremony on the surface of New Caprica. After the ensuing party, with Dualla and Anders gone, Adama sleeps with Kara Thrace and suggests they break up with their respective partners. Thrace and Adama declare their love for each other, and he assumes that she has agreed to their plan. He wakes up alone the next morning only to find out that Thrace has just married Anders. The rift between Adama and Thrace has widened ever larger. Hurt, he proposes to Dualla, who accepts ([[TRS]]: "[[Unfinished Business]]").

Another eight months later, a year after the settlement, a half-manned ''Pegasus'' is still orbiting New Caprica. Commander Adama has gained a considerable amount of weight in the intervening year. He is in the process of deciding whether or not to supply Kara Thrace with [[antibiotics]] for pneumonia-afflicted Anders when Dualla spots a massive Cylon fleet jumping into the nebula. Adama and his father briefly discuss their course of action; young Adama argues for an immediate emergency jump. Reluctantly, the Admiral orders the orbiting remains of the Fleet, whose population consists of around two thousand citizens, to escape, thus leaving New Caprica to the Cylons for the time being ([[TRS]]: "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]").

=== Battle of New Caprica and Destruction of ''Pegasus'' ===

Commander Adama and his father get into a disagreement over whether or not a rescue mission should be mounted to New Caprica. Lee believes that it would end with the destruction of both ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', leaving the pitiful remnants of the Fleet at the mercy of the Cylons. Lee also objects to the Admiral's decision to reinstate [[Sharon Agathon]] as a Colonial Fleet officer to act as liaison between the New Caprica resistance and ''Galactica''. These disagreements lead to heated arguments between the two, prompting Admiral Adama to make a comment about Lee's weight by calling him a "fatass" and saying he has grown "soft" in the past year ("[[Occupation]]", "[[Precipice]]"). Due to his son's objections, Admiral Adama decides to take ''Galactica'' to rescue the people on New Caprica alone. He gives his son orders to wait 18 hours for his return; if he does not return by then, Lee is to resume the search for Earth with what is left of the civilian fleet. Despite their disagreement, the two have a heartfelt goodbye. Lee tries to talk his father out of the plan and explain himself, but the older Adama stops him. Instead the two embrace and the Admiral gives his son full military honors when departing ''Galactica'' ([[TRS]]: "[[Exodus, Part I]]").

Lee is certain that his father will not return, and he is conflicted between his duty to protect the civilians and his duty to his father. His wife's attempt at reassurance only serve to heighten his guilt. Leaving his ship's Vipers behind to protect the civilians, he takes ''Pegasus'' to assist ''Galactica'', fully aware that he may very well be on a suicide mission. He joins the [[Battle of New Caprica|battle]] just in time, saving his father's ship from certain destruction. Immediately destroying one basestar after exiting the jump, Adama uses ''Pegasus'' to draw fire, giving ''Galactica'' time to escape. This action damages ''Pegasus'' beyond repair. Adama orders the crew to evacuate and the ship's [[Battery|batteries]] to be set on autofire. He is the last person to leave the CIC, thanking the ship as he departs. The small crew evacuates on Raptors just as ''Pegasus'' rams a basestar, destroying itself in the process ([[TRS]]: "[[Exodus, Part II]]").

The Commander and his crew transfer to the last remaining battlestar, ''Galactica''. Dissatisfied with his round appearance, he had also taken up a rigid exercise regimen and starts losing weight rapidly ([[TRS]]: "[[Collaborators]]").

=== The Second Exodus ===

As of the episode "[[Torn]]", Lee has returned to the role of ''Galactica's'' CAG, with the rank of Major. When a dying basestar is discovered in the [[Lion's Head Nebula]], Adama leads a team of Marines on it and captures several humanoid Cylons. After Doctor [[Cottle]] discovers that they are infected with a virus lethal to the Cylons, Adama advocates to use the prisoners as biological weapons in an attempt to exterminate the Cylons. The plan is approved but ultimately fails due to the intervention of [[Karl Agathon]], who sabotages the mission ([[TRS]]: "[[A Measure of Salvation]]").

When [[Daniel Novacek|Bulldog]] arrives on ''Galactica'', Admiral Adama tells Lee about [[Valkyrie|the mission]] they executed together, and how he believes it has led to the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon holocaust]]. Lee blames the admiralty instead, saying they wanted to provoke a war ([[TRS]]: "[[Hero]]").

After most of the Fleet has arrived safely on the [[algae planet]] following a [[Passage (star cluster)|harrowing journey]], Adama leads the food harvesting operations on the surface. Fourteen days into the harvesting mission, he meets with Kara Thrace and once again suggests they divorce their respective spouses. Thrace refuses to divorce and Adama refuses to cheat on his wife, deadlocking their relationship. When the [[Temple of Five]] is found on the planet and the Cylons show up, Adama is ordered to protect the temple from the Cylons, destroying it if necessary. He orders Starbuck to scout the terrain in her Raptor, which gets shot down by Centurions. After having sent Dualla to rescue Starbuck, the Major and his team attempt an ambush against a group of Centurions passing through a valley towards the temple. The ambush fails, and Adama orders to retreat and the temple to be blown. When trying to do so, he and his team witness the algae planet's star going supernova, and realize that the nova is in fact the [[Eye of Jupiter]]. After the Cylon fleet has jumped away to escape the destruction of the planetary system, the ground team is picked up by a rescue party ("[[The Eye of Jupiter]]", "[[Rapture]]").

Later Adama is treated by his friend [[Galen Tyrol]] to a little surprise: A number of crew have created a [[Joe's bar|bar]], on the starboard hangar deck, complete with a Pyramid arcade game and an old Viper Mark II hanging above for atmosphere. Tyrol and Adama have a drink as they discuss their marital problems; Tyrol and his wife Cally have had an argument that has apparently left him "in the doghouse". Adama is reluctant to interact with his wife, as his uncertainty over his love of Kara Thrace continues to fight with him. Adama returns to his quarters, quite drunk, to find Dualla still awake and doing some work, apparently drinking some type of [[alcohol]]. She tries to confirm if they are still going to have dinner later that day as Lee dozes off, leaving Dualla disappointed. Later on Adama and Dualla have an argument about Kara Thrace and the future of their marriage. Dualla says that she married Adama because she loved him, choosing to have him for as long as he or Kara Thrace would let him. She resigns herself to her marriage's failure and tells Adama that she will not stand in his way if he were to choose Thrace over her. Dualla then leaves. Thrace and Adama meet privately. When Thrace asks Adama if he loves her and would be with her if she were to leave Anders, Adama equivocates, remembering Thrace's fickleness [[Unfinished Business|after he declared his love a year before]]. Thrace leaves him to think about the situation.

Adama returns to the bar and drinks more, toying with his wedding band. He asks Chief Tyrol if he ever thought about what his future with [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] would have been like, or had any regrets. With a quick drink, Tyrol replies in the negative. Adama stumbles back to his quarters, losing his wedding band somewhere in ''Galactica's'' corridors. Lee Adama and his wife meet in Joe's Bar. Adama, having since found his lost wedding ring, confesses that he loves Dualla and how dedicated she has been to him, never realizing how much he needed her affection. As the two embrace, Adama tries to avoid looking across the bar at Kara Thrace and Anders. Thrace returns the glance before Adama breaks it off ([[TRS]]: "[[Taking a Break From All Your Worries]]").

===Death of a Lover and Friend===

During refueling operations over a gas giant, Kara Thrace becomes mentally unstable, having [[Virtual Leoben|hallucinations]] about Leoben and her alleged [[The Destiny|destiny]]. When she refuses to fly another mission, Adama has a friendly talk with her. After all that happened two are back where they started; Thrace being the screwup pilot and Adama having to clean up after her as [[CAG]]. He also tells her that his relationship with Dee is better than ever. Adama offers to fly as her wingman to calm her. While on [[Combat Air Patrol|CAP]], Starbuck sees a Cylon [[Heavy Raider]] and goes on alert, joined by Adama. However, from the vantage point of Adama, Thrace's [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] malfunctions and is drawn into the vortex of a storm. He gets sketchy information from Thrace when she says "I'll see you on the other side." Her Viper explodes, and Adama struggles to escape the vortex ([[TRS]]: "[[Maelstrom]]").

He is badly shaken by her death, as evidenced by his lack of concentration as CAG, confusing people and mission details. He is also shaken by a story told by [[Romo Lampkin]]. Eventually, he begins the healing process with [[Samuel Anders]] by putting Thrace's picture into the [[memorial hallway]] ([[TRS]]: "[[The Son Also Rises]]").

===The Trial of Gaius Baltar===

President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] recommends that Major Adama be put in charge of the proceedings of the trial of [[Gaius Baltar]]. However, due to the pressures that he is under, Adama declines the position (despite his interest in law as a child). As a token of his affection, Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] gives Lee his [[Joseph Adama|grandfather]]'s Caprican [[Arts and Literature of the Twelve Colonies#Law books|Law Code books]] ([[TRS]]: "[[A Day in the Life]]"). Later, his father places Adama in charge of security for Baltar's lawyer, [[Romo Lampkin]], claiming that he trusts him, but also pulling him off his duties of CAG after he shows that Thrace's death affects his job performance. While following Lampkin around, Adama develops a desire to help Lampkin defend Baltar. His father is not pleased with this idea, but allows him to do so ([[TRS]]: "[[The Son Also Rises]]").

After Adama contributes to humiliating Colonel Tigh in court, he and his father have a falling out, which leads to Lee's resignation from the Colonial Fleet and him becoming a civilian. Adama also learns that President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] has resumed taking [[chamalla]], which he confronts her about in court, trying to discredit her credibility. Roslin pleads with him to not pursue his line of questioning, but he forces her to admit that her cancer has returned. Disappointed in Adama, she recollects times when the two were friends and she called him "Captain Apollo". After that, [[Anastasia Dualla|his wife]] packs her belongings in preparation for leaving Adama. She says that he should not have confronted the President, and that he was supporting a legal system that was trying to let a murderer walk. She leaves him alone, with him crying that she doesn't understand him ([[TRS]]: "[[Crossroads, Part I]]").

In an unusual move, Adama takes the stand himself and delivers a [[Crossroads, Part II#Noteworthy Dialogue|passionate speech]] in defense of Baltar. He points out a string of incidents, some involving himself, where people were forgiven for serious crimes, and defends those decisions, arguing that humanity is not a real civilization anymore. Adama thinks that executing Baltar for actions that he couldn't really prevent is not justice, and that Baltar is just the Fleet's scapegoat for everyone's misdeeds and failures on New Caprica. The speech plays a major role in Baltar's subsequent acquittal. When Romo Lampkin leaves Adama after their victory, he leaves behind his cane, which he used after being injured in an attempt on his life, and walks normally, thus showing how he manipulated both Adama and the court. Ultimately, Adama's sense of justice has [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II|once again]] placed him at odds with his father, but this time he has alienated Roslin and his wife as well, leaving him seemingly alone.

===A New Beginning===

As Cylon forces converges on the Fleet in the [[Ionian Nebula]], Adama unofficially returns to duty and mans a Viper. Unexpectedly, he encounters [[Kara Thrace]], whom he [[Maelstrom|believed dead]] ([[TRS]]: "[[Crossroads, Part II]]"). Adama and Thrace join the [[Battle of the Ionian Nebula|ensuing battle]] and help to defend the civilian ships from the Cylons. When Thrace returns to ''Galactica'', Adama is glad to see her again and believes her story to a certain degree, whereas most others are is distrustful and suspect a Cylon trap.

His father offers him his pilot wings back, and thus his commission, but Adama declines, saying that he felt the need for a change for some time, and that Baltar's trial was just the trigger. He thinks that he can gain a position in the Colonial government and make a contribution there ([[TRS]]: "[[He That Believeth In Me]]").

[[Tom Zarek]] nominates Adama as the Caprican delegate on the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum of Twelve]]. Adama is seen off ''Galactica'' with a party in the [[rec room]] and an official ceremony on the hangar deck, where many of the crew salute him and wish him good luck. He embraces Dualla and tells her that she "got the house", implying that their breakup is final ([[TRS]]: "[[Six of One]]"). Zarek appointed Adama because of his dedication to finding the truth during the Baltar trial, and because he wants Adama to fight against some or Roslin's proposed changes to the justice system, that are undemocratic in his eyes. Although in public, Roslin claims to have forgiven Adama and to admire his convictions, she snubs him by refusing to meet him and openly teases him about his inexperience in a Quorum session ([[TRS]]: "[[The Ties That Bind]]").

Adama once again shows his idealism when Baltar's new [[Cult of Baltar|cult]] violently clashes with other religious groups in the Fleet. Whereas Roslin wants to shut down the group and pleads to the Quorum to retroactively sign off an emergency measure that restricts their right of assembly, Adama and [[Reza Chronides]] think that they are doing nothing blasphemous and illegal. The Quorum eventually decides to rescind Roslin's decision. Roslin later tells his father, that she thinks that Adama maybe be right, but that he is too idealistic and doesn't understand the pragmatism that is sometimes necessary in politics ([[TRS]]: "[[Escape Velocity]]").

Following the unexplained disappearance of Laura Roslin on a rebel Cylon baseship ([[TRS]]: "[[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]"), Adama leads a search for an interim president, knowing that his father would never support an administration under Tom Zarek. Despite consulting Romo Lampkin on a list of 47 candidates, it is Lampkin who ultimately decides that Adama should be the interim president; Adama thanks Lampkin by offering [[Jake (New Caprica)|Jake]] as a pet to replace the loss of [[Faye Lampkin]]'s cat, [[Lance]].

Even with his ascension to the presidency, Adama is unable to dissuade his father from stepping down as military leader, or his father's personal search for Roslin—a mission that Adama believes to be nothing short of suicide ([[TRS]]: "[[Sine Qua Non]]").

===No Exit===
After the failed coup d'état, in which Lee is the sole [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] delegate not killed in the massacre ordered by [[Tom Zarek]], President Laura Roslin puts Lee in charge of forming a new Quorum. Lee proposes the idea of making the new Quorum based not upon the individual Colonies but upon ships in the Fleet, as he reasons that the people are no longer defined by their Colonies but by their ships. Roslin approves of the idea and tells Lee that while she will remain President in title, she wants him to do the "heavy lifting" from then on ([[TRS]]: "[[No Exit]]"). Given this, its likely that Roslin has made him her new Vice President after the execution of Tom Zarek for his coup.

Lee is shown to have taken on the Presidential duties since then such as meeting with the new Quorum of Ship's Captains and organizing the stripping of ''Galactica'' which is hard for him as he loves the ship. When Admiral Adama calls for volunteers for a final mission, Lee is the first to volunteer despite it being likely one-way.

===Assault on the Colony===
While planning the mission, Lee re-dons the service uniform of a major (distinguished by its collar piping), but omits rank insignia.

''Galactica'' launches its attack on the Colony and rams right into it. Lee leads a team of Colonial Marines and Rebel Centurions into the Colony from through its breach their staging point at ''Galactica''’s bow. They fight their way past Cavil's forces and eventually link up with Kara Thrace and her team, who have rescued Hera Agathon. The two groups head back to ''Galactica'', but are followed by Cavil and his forces. Lee runs into Baltar and Caprica Six who are helping to repel the boarding parties. Lee and his men provide cover fire for Kara, Helo, Athena and Hera to make their way to safety.

===New Earth===
After ''Galactica'' jumps to the coordinates Kara Thrace provides, Lee is one of the first people to land on the lush, habitable planet the Colonials eventually decide to call "Earth". They discover that primitive human tribes have already evolved on the new Earth. Lee makes a radical suggestion: The Colonials will abandon their ships and most of their technology and start new lives using only essential supplies and the planet's resources. They will also teach the native humans about language and culture, but not about technology. This will hopefully prevent Humanity from repeating the same mistakes it made on Kobol and the Twelve Colonies. Surprisingly, this idea is well received.

Later, Lee and Kara say their final goodbyes to Adama, who has decided to live alone for the remainder of his life. After Adama departs in a Raptor, Kara tells Lee that she is also leaving. She doesn't know where she's going, but she knows that her job here is done. Kara then asks Lee what he's going to do now. Lee briefly turns his back and starts to talk about exploring the new world, but when he turns around, Kara is nowhere in sight. Realizing what Kara meant when she said she was leaving, Lee bids Kara goodbye for the last time and promises that she won't be forgotten.

'''"The Last Supper"''' is the unofficial name of a promotional picture concocted by the [[SciFi Channel]] to promote the [[Re-imagined Series]]. It is one of the first promotional photos from the [[Season 4 (2008)|fourth season]] to be released to the general public, first making print in ''[[w:Entertainment Weekly|Entertainment Weekly]]'' with brief comments by series producer [[Ron Moore]]. It deliberately mirrors [[w:The Last Supper (Leonardo)|Leonardo's famous painting]].

== The "Clues" ==

Attached to the photo were comments from Moore, who provided descriptions of each character's pose and position in the picture, while claiming that each pose is significant and holds insights into upcoming events of Season 4. From left to right:

*President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] lights a fire: "She's burning something of importance that has to do with a plot turn midseason." This is resolved in "[[Sometimes a Great Notion]]:" Dejected after discovering Earth is a barren world, Roslin burns her copy of the [[Book of Pythia]]. In an update to the picture on the "You Will Know the Truth" site, she is removed from the picture, foretelling her death in the closing act of "[[Daybreak, Part II]]".

*[[Saul Tigh]], missing eye turned towards the camera: "You might literally take that composition in terms of Tigh turning a blind eye." Tigh attempts, but ultimately fails, to live a normal life after realizing his true nature, turning a blind eye to what he is and focusing on what he wants to be.

*The [[Ellen Tigh|empty space at the table]]: "We have not yet revealed the final [unknown] Cylon." Does that mean the people already at the table ''aren't'' the final Cylon? Moore laughs. "You ferreted that out pretty slyly. I didn't really want to give that away." The clues here point to Ellen Tigh as the final Cylon. The empty space is right next to Saul Tigh, Ellen's husband. Tigh is looking directly at the unoccupied seat where his wife should be. The space is vacant because Ellen is supposedly dead. And on the table rests a cup similar to the one Ellen once drank a poisoned concoction from, resulting in her death.

*[[Lee Adama]] in civilian clothes: "He does not return to flight status." Lee does not pilot a Viper for the rest of the series and instead takes a more active role in the fleet's government even becoming President temporarily.

*[[Gaius Baltar]] looks up to his [[Virtual Six]], who stands in the center of the picture: "Baltar's Six has proclaimed that she is delivering the gospel of the [Cylons'] [[God (RDM)|one true God]], so it seems natural to place her at the center of the photo. Baltar ascends to the status of religious leader over the course of the season, winning many converts to his cult. He later goes on to broker a truce between the Colonials and John Cavil's Cylon loyalists. Six is revealed (along with Caprica's Baltar) to be an agent of a divine authority, however it dislikes being referred to as "God".

*[[Kara Thrace]] and [[Samuel Anders]] in a sensual embrace: "[Note] that the only one embracing Starbuck is Anders." Though she is shunned upon her return, Anders sticks up for Starbuck and has faith in her claims about Earth. Later in the season, Thrace becomes an advocate for Anders after he suffers life-altering brain trauma and ends up tethered to machines for life support.

*[[Galen Tyrol]], knife in hand, glares angrily: "The Chief does not have a pleasant time of it this season." His child with fellow grunt Cally would seem to be the second human-Cylon hybrid, and hints Moore, "one should consider the knife in his hand in that context." Upon learning, in the wake of Cally's death, that Nicky Tyrol is not his biological son he deposits the boy onto his birth father, Hot Dog, and severs his ties with humanity. He also murders Tory Foster upon learning of her role in Cally's murder.

*[[Natalie Faust]] stands in commanding pose: "She assumes a leadership position for a group of Cylons [that have] a separate agenda from the rest of them." Faust leads the initial rebellion that fractures the unity of the Cylon race but is assassinated by Sharon Agathon, whom she is pointing at. Her position is later filled by [[D'Anna Biers]], then by [[Ellen Tigh]].

*[[Sharon Agathon|Sharon]] and [[Karl Agathon]] cast a worried glance across the table: "The person they're looking at is definitely reacting." This may have been resolved in "[[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]"; they are looking frightened toward Natalie who is pointing accusatorilly in their general direction. In "Guess What's Coming to Dinner?", Sharon shoots Natalie when she believes the latter to be an immediate danger to Hera; Natalie dies of her injuries in the next episode.

*Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] sits on the end of the table, as far as possible from President Roslin: "They're also turned toward each other." Adama and Roslin are pulled apart by circumstance over the course of the season, but their love bonds them together. Though Roslin ultimately dies in the series finale, Adama promises to build the [[Unfinished Business|cabin they talked about back on New Caprica]] by her burial mound so he can be with her always.

== Dismissal ==

In light of massive fan speculation, [[Aaron Douglas]] (Tyrol) publicly dismissed the importance of the photo via his LiveJournal.

According to Douglas, Ron Moore was not present at the photo shoot, which was part of SciFi Channel's promotional material production phase. The actors were given general directions by the photographer and SciFi Channel staff, but interpreted their characters as they saw fit. This indicates that the photograph was created for marketing purposes, as multiple different versions of the shot were produced. It was likely meant to fuel speculation, and thus there is probably no deep meaning behind its composition. Douglas added that neither he nor any of the cast believe there is any significance to the photo. *The picture also comprises the cover of exclusive Best Buy packaging for the R1 Season 4.0 and Season 4.5 DVD sets. The left half of the image is the cover of the slip case for 4.0 and the right half for 4.5., so that when the boxes are put together they form the complete image.

While offering no substantial information, Roslin's belief that he played a role in the attack on the Twelve Colonies is strengthened. She and Adama decide to give Baltar a public trial instead of quietly executing him ([[TRS]]: "[[Taking a Break From All Your Worries]]").

Security for both Lampkin and Baltar is high, as many people believe fervently that Baltar should not be given a trial at all. Major [[Lee Adama]] is placed in command of this security detail, and eventually becomes Lampkin's aide for the trial ([[TRS]]: "[[The Son Also Rises]]").
*Baltar's trial becomes a frenzied media circus. Lampkin manages to keep mob rule from overwhelming the proceedings, but it is Lee Adama's testimony that ultimately acquits Baltar. The son of William Adama notes many, many abuses of justice, crimes and mistakes committed by himself and other leadership in the Fleet that were ignored or punished lightly. Baltar's only distinction, in comparison, was that he was unlikeable and thus more useful as a scapegoat for the problems of the Fleet that stemmed from colonizing [[New Caprica]].
*With the end of the trial, Baltar finds his acquittal bitter-sweet, with no home, no work, and no allies.

*The women lead Baltar to an used storage compartment, where he learns that a [[Cult of Baltar|cult]] has arisen around him, likely starting with the publication of his [[My Triumphs, My Mistakes|book]] condemning the perceived suppression of the Fleet's poor. The cult is composed of many young, athletic women and some men. Headed by [[Jeanne]], they view Baltar as a messianic figure and have been building a shrine for him. Baltar initially thinks of them as crazy and wants to have nothing to do with them. When [[Tracey Anne|one of the women]] watches him interact with his [[Messenger Six]], she thinks that he is praying and draws him into a religious discussion. Baltar tells her that [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies|Colonial Religion]] is empty and false, and that there is only one [[God (RDM)|true God]]. Captivated by Baltar, she kisses him. His standing among his followers is further increased when he prays for a sick [[Derrick|child]], who miraculously recovers soon after ([[TRS]]: "[[He That Believeth In Me]]").
*To his amazement, Baltar begins to see a [[Messenger Baltar|Messenger version of himself]]. At the same time he begins a relationship with [[Tory Foster]], who is drawn to him due her awakened Cylon nature and Baltar's apparent understanding of it ([[TRS]]: "[[Six of One]]"). The situation with his cult escalates when a [[Sons of Ares|militant religious group]] vandalizes the commune. In retaliation, Baltar and some of his followers disrupt a [[temple]] service and denounce the Colonial gods. President Roslin takes this as an excuse to curtail the cult's religion freedom by forbidding large assemblies. When encountering a Marine trying to enforce this order, Baltar makes a defiant stand, allowing himself to be beaten up in front of his followers. The display ends when [[Lee Adama]] shows up to announce that the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] has decided to rescind Roslin's proclamation and restore their freedoms. Following this, Baltar holds a speech telling everyone that he thinks that someone in the universe loves him and that people have to love themselves in order to love others ([[Escape Velocity]]). Over the next weeks, his sermons are broadcast per [[wireless]] throughout the ship and likely the whole Fleet ([[TRS]]: "[[The Road Less Travelled]]", "[[Faith]]").
* When a baseship with [[Cylon Civil War|rebel Cylons]] joins the Fleet, Roslin summons him. She tells Baltar that he has been in her visions and wants him to accompany her to the [[Hybrid]] to find out what they mean. However, when the [[Natalie|rebel leader]] is unexpectedly killed, the Hybrid panics and jumps away. Drawing on his [[Torn|previous experience]] with the Hybrid, Baltar manages to calm it down somewhat. In the following [[Battle of the Resurrection Hub|battle]] to destroy a critical Cylon facility, Baltar is critically wounded when missiles hit the ship while he tries to evangelize to a [[Cylon Centurion|Centurion]]. While his wounds are dressed by Roslin Baltar confesses his role in [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|downfall of humanity]]. Roslin initially removes the bandages she applied, letting him bleed out, but decides to save him after all ([[TRS]]: "[[Guess What's Coming to Dinner?]]", "[[The Hub]]").
* After [[Number Three]]'s unboxing, the [[Final Four]] are revealed and Tory Foster willingly joins the Cylons. Upon learning this, Baltar claims that he "always subconsciously knew" that she is a Cylon. Later, he is part of the first landing party to set foot on [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], being as dismayed at its state as everyone else ([[TRS]]: "[[Revelations]]").
*When Gaeta and Zarek start a coup against Adama and Roslin, Baltar and his cult support Adama and Roslin, working with Galen Tyrol in efforts to retake the ship and protect the two. Baltar is convinced by Roslin to let her use his wireless radio to communicate with the fleet about the mutiny and she is able to make a short broadcast before being jammed. Roslin convinces him to leave with her sure that he is going to be a target of the mutineers and they make their way to the Secondary Storage Airlock where while waiting, Baltar tries to convince Gaeta to stop to no avail. Baltar escapes ''Galactica'' with Roslin to the Cylon baseship and supports Roslin there. He also sleeps with [[Lida|another Six]] and chats with her about his cult saying that while he doesn't like them, he feels responsible for them and decides he has to go back to ''Galactica'' and them after having a nightmare where a firing squad executes Adama. He returns to ''Galactica'' with Roslin once the coup is ended by Adama and his men who retake ''Galactica'' with help from military support from Roslin and the Cylon baseship. Afterwards he and Gaeta have a civil chat about what happened indicating that they have forgiven each other for what they did and when Gaeta makes a statement that he hopes someday people understand who he was, Baltar says he understands who Gaeta was. ([[TRS]]: "[[The Oath]]", "[[Blood on the Scales]]")
*When Caprica-Six apparently has a falling out with Tigh after her failed pregnancy, Baltar runs into her and offers her a home with him again, but she refuses saying that while she's changed he hasn't.
*At the suggestion of Paulla, Baltar tries to get his cult, now numbering in the thousands, representation in the government, but Lee Adama refuses asking him to name one time he acted selflessly. Baltar admits he can't but is disappointed Adama is holding that against his movement before leaving.
*Baltar is among those that attend Adama's speech and call for volunteers to crew ''Galactica'' to rescue Hera Agathon. While many other people including Caprica-Six volunteer, he doesn't although he does seem to almost volunteer but decides not to.
*When his cult evacuates on the last Raptor, Baltar hesitates then decides to stay to help telling Paulla that the cult merely appropriated him and he was never one of them. Baltar is clearly nervous about this decision, but sticks to it. Lee Adama tosses him a gun, clearly happy with his choice.
*During the battle, Baltar is assigned to the reserve team that protects ''Galactica'' alongside Caprica-Six. Caprica-Six is finally proud of him and the two kiss, only to be interrupted by Messenger Six and Baltar who say that they will hold the fate of both races in their hands. Both are shocked that the other can see them.
*During the battle, Baltar fights alongside Caprica-Six and the other marines against several Centurions. Baltar takes out one by himself but gets over-enthusiastic and nearly takes out the returning rescue team too but is stopped by Caprica-Six. Adama tells him he did good, but they are forced to retreat when more Centurions show up.
*Baltar and Caprica-Six end up in a room together with him down to a sidearm and her down to two bullets left in her machine gun. The two are shocked to find Hera there with him and leave carrying her in a fulfillment of the Opera House Prophecy. As they leave, they close the door on Roslin and Athena, never realizing they're there. The two ultimately reach a door and Caprica-Six from her shared vision and Baltar from his vision on Kobol realize they have to go in. The two find themselves in CIC with the Final Five on the balcony just like in the vision. Cavil takes Hera hostage, but Baltar manages to defuses the situation revealing that Messenger Baltar and Six are angels of God who Baltar describes as a force of nature neither good nor evil. Baltar and Tigh convince Cavil to end the war right there with peace with the Five giving resurrection back to Cavil so he and his forces can survive while he lets them take Hera and agrees to stop pursuing them. Cavil accepts the deal and orders his forces to stand down. Baltar later witnesses Tory's death at Tyrol's hands and the breaking of the truce that results in the destruction of Cavil and his forces.
*Later, on the new Earth, Baltar and Caprica-Six watch Hera, and are visited one last time by the Messengers, who reveal that their destiny was always to protect Hera. While God's plan is never over, Messenger Baltar promises that their lives will be a lot less interesting from that point on, and the two disappear for the last time. Baltar and Caprica-Six set off to start a new life together as farmers, using Baltar's knowledge from growing up on a farm on Aerilon.

*There was speculation that Gaius Baltar could be a Cylon himself. However, his presence in the now-infamous "[[The Last Supper]]" picture discounts this, as confirmed by [[Ron D. Moore]]. As of "[[Sometimes a Great Notion]]", all known humanoid Cylons have been accounted for (although "[[No Exit]]" references still another humanoid Cylon, there is no indication given that this is Baltar).
*[[Ron Moore]] has stated in several episode commentaries that when the role of "Gaius Baltar" was originally written in the script, the writing team never intended Baltar to have a "funny" aspect, but James Callis himself decided to play up that aspect of the frantic predicaments Baltar finds himself in during the [[Miniseries]] (which although the writers never anticipated, they enjoyed, and started writing him with that in mind).
