Fanfic Article?
Welcome to the wiki! I immediately associated your name with fanfic, having (I believe) seen you post such work to the skiffy board. We have little to no fanfic info here on the wiki. While directly hosting fanfic would likely be incompatible with the wiki's mission (in terms of the encylopedic part, as well as the fact that postings here should be under the Creative Commons license), what could be useful is an article with links to fanfic. A categorized list of fanfic links seems to be something that people occasionally request on the boards, and the wiki format would be conducive to people keeping such a list current. It could also maybe have brief summaries/reviews if that would be useful. Just a brainstorm. If you're interested in such an undertaking, but need assistance, just drop me a note on my user page. I'm sure any other admin (or the Vigilant One) would be glad to help. --Steelviper 11:46, 6 April 2006 (CDT)
::Okay, I *think* I may have this thing figured out.
::Thank you for the kind welcome. Yes, I do have kind of a thing for fanfic. ;) If this reply to your message works, I'll wander over to your user page and see if I can manage to post a substantive reply there, in regard to a fanfic article. ::Odd...I thought I was the Dark One. Regardless. SabaceanBabe, we don't add fanfic stuff, yeah, but do you have a website where you have it printed up? Because we do have "fan community links" on the front page (currently titled "fan stuff"), and I think we do post links to fansites and stuff (we just don't archive it). But the more links to stuff the better. == Overview ==
:As the presidential election looms just weeks away, the accidental discovery of a habitable planet sparks debate in the Fleet: Colonize? Or keep seeking Earth? Meanwhile, Starbuck leads a rescue mission of Raptors back to Caprica to save Anders and his resistance.

Summary
*Adama has finally given Starbuck the go-ahead to plan a rescue mission to Caprica. On Pegasus, she lays out their plan: they will use all of their remaining Raptors — 20 in all — and use the navigation computer/organ from one of the captured Heavy Raiders to calculate the Jumps back to Caprica. Using this, they can make it back to Caprica in a series of 10 Jumps. They will go undetected when they reach Caprica by making a risky jump to just a few klicks above the surface, within the atmosphere itself, below Cylon DRADIS. Their biggest obstacle to doing this was actually interfacing with the Heavy Raider's navigation "computer", but now they will take Caprica-Sharon along in Starbuck's Raptor with it; Sharon will directly interface with the computer (by inserting a fiber-optic cable into her arm, like she did in "Flight of the Phoenix").
*The presidential election is two weeks away, and Roslin is ahead in the polls. The only real arguments that Baltar has against her that give him any ground are when he accuses her of pandering to the religious fundamentalists (i.e. her recent policy switch on abortion) and guiding the Fleet based on the scriptures alone. Conferring with his campaign manager Tom Zarek in his lab, Baltar realizes he'll need more than this to turn the fleet againt Roslin. Meanwhile, Roslin is doing a little rehearsal ritual for the presidential debate with Adama in his quarters.
*On the hangar deck, Chief Tyrol is sleeping on the floor and twitching convulsively, having a nightmare. Cally searches around the deck to find him, and is confused by the sight when she finds him. Cally tried to wake Tyrol up, but snapping right out of his nightmare he attacks Cally, punching her in the face until she is a bloody pulp and unconscious. Realizing where he is and what's going on, Tyrol is horrified, and carries Cally in his arms to sickbay.
*Apollo has conflicting feelings about Starbuck's mission to rescue Anders, but wishes her good luck in finding him.
*Helo and Caprica-Sharon travel in Starbuck's Raptor. Sharon is still deeply depressed about her daughter Hera's apparent death, and has been shutting herself out. Helo tells her that he won't let her do that and won't give up on her. Sharon tells him that she has the feeling that something bad will happen in the future; not on the mission to Caprica, but something else.
*On the very first jump out of the series of ten, Racetrack's Raptor jumps to the wrong set of coordinates. Starbuck's orders were to keep going ahead until they lose 3 Raptors, so they continue on, while Racetrack prepares to follow her orders to return to Galactica if separated. Her Raptor jumped into the middle of a gas cloud with a lot of interference, and upon clearing it, a new planet is found. Scanners indicate that it is a human-habitable planet. She returns to Galactica with news of the discovery.
*The crew goes over the scans from the planet; it can sustain human life and subsequent scouting shows that in contains animal and vegetative life; they could indeed settle here. However, it is a cold world and somewhat harsh; only a temperate band around the equator covering about 20% of the surface would be habitable. After some prodding from Six, Baltar and Zarek realize that they can use this as their wedge issue to turn the people against Roslin: offer them permament settlement on this planet.
*Tory goes over new poll numbers with Roslin on Colonial One: Baltar has been gaining ground with his new offer to stop running from the Cylons and stay here. The planet is hidden by interference from the gas clouds, and many people want to stop their constant run in the refugee fleet. Roslin points out that if the Colonials could find the planet, the Cylons could just as easily. Tory points out that Baltar is pandering to the people's hopes, while Roslin is pointing out the bitter truth that they simply don't want to hear; people will vote their hopes.
*Shocked by his attack on Cally, Chief Tyrol asks for religious counselling, and meets with a priest named Brother Cavil. Tyrol explains that it is because he doesn't believe that psychoanalysis works, but is himself a very religious man. Cavil is somewhat loose and sarcastic in his counseling, leaving Tyrol a little pertubed and confused. Cavil tells Tryol that he must look for the problem in himself and questions Tyrol, and when Tyrol denies that he has been having disturbing dreams, Cavil can see through it, so Tyrol relents.
*For weeks, Tyrol has been having the recurring dream that he walks onto the upper level of the hangar deck, climbs over the railing and commits suicide himself by jumping to his death. Cavil says it is because Tyrol has a subconscious desire to kill himself. Tyrol explains that he has had the gnawing worry since Galactica-Sharon died that he might himself be a Cylon. Galactica-Sharon never really knew she was a Cylon, even up to the point that she died, but reported strange fears that something bad was going to happen and she had to stop herself: how would Tyrol, or anyone else, really know if they were a Cylon sleeper agent or not? Tyrol is frightened by the prospect.
*Cavil assured Tyrol that he is not a Cylon, sarcastically quipping that he knows because he is a Cylon himself, and hasn't seen Tyrol at any of the meetings. Tyrol feels ashamed to go back to the hangar deck crew after the accident, but Cavil assures him that they're the only family he has left, and they love him, especially Cally.
*At the final presidential debate, Baltar's charisma and hopes of finally giving up their run from the Cylons starts to pull him ahead in the polls, and Roslin's warnings that this planet is not safe and determination to keep searching for Earth do not gain wide support. Baltar apparently wins the final debate. Roslin tells him to go frak himself.
*The rescue mission makes the final jump to Caprica. Raptor 612 is lost because it jumps right into the middle of a mountain. The remaining Raptors continue on, then Starbuck, Helo, Sharon and the marines continue on foot.
*One klick away from the resistance's base camp, they see movement, and find Anders and his whole group. Starbuck is overjoyed to see him, but Anders warns that the Cylons are right behind them; the resistance's base was ambushed that morning, and half of Anders' men are dead.
*The marines and Caprica Resistance members start coming under Cylon artillery fire. After running briefly, they reach a point where the arc of the artillery shells is right above them, and cannot hit them. However, the artillery's killzone is now between them and retreat back to the Raptors. To be continued...

Questions
*If Raptor 612 was destroyed by jumping into a mountain, how was their transponder still operational? (see Analysis)
*Does the fleet have the resources to sustain long term settlements on the newly found planet? Even if Galactica and Pegasus themselves were recycled, would there be enough materials, or would the Battlestars still be necessary for orbital defence?
*Zarek says the people have been cooped up in metal boxes since the attack. How literally does he mean this—for instance, are people living inside converted cargo holds as they were in the original series? Or did he just meant being stuck inside of cramped ships in general, i.e. even the Galactica crew (who have dedicated crew quarters)?
*Laura states that Baltar does not have a key issue besides the "religious angle." What about the abortion issue from "The Captain's Hand"? (see Analysis)

Analysis
*Timeline:
**According to Six, on the night of the first debate the election is still "two weeks away".
**At the beginning of the first debate, James McManus states Baltar declared his bid for presidency a month ago. This took place at the end of "The Captain's Hand".
**Zarek states that the people of the fleet have been "cooped up in metal boxes for nine months", putting this episode not long after "Downloaded" around Day 270.
**At the conclusion of the second debate, the polls will open in three days.
**It appears to take the Raptors 10 days to make the trip back to Caprica. Not enough is known yet about the vagaries of Colonial FTL drives and computers to explain why it should take so long.

*Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson is apparently assigned to Pegasus at present, since Dualla refers to her mission as the "Pegasus survey team".
**She could have been flying a Pegasus Raptor.

*Lee Adama is now wearing a wristwatch, perhaps Barry Garner's from "The Captain's Hand".

*It is safe to emerge from a hyperspace jump inside a planetary atmosphere at 2km, but not within solid rock. For comparative purposes, the density of air at 2km in an earth-like atmosphere is about 1 kg/m3, while the density of silica rock is about 2,600 kg/m3.

*When Tyrol's counseling with Cavil is coming to an end, Cavil notes to Tyrol that Cally "especially" loves him. Tyrol is apparently oblivious to this obvious fact up to that point.

*BattlestarWiki has been trying for some time to reconcile on the Timeline the apparent jump from 3 months to 6 months that occured at the beginning of Season 2.5, a part of which was that back in "Bastille Day" it was stated on screen that the presidential elections were due in seven months. However, over 7 months passed by the end of "Scar", and there wasn't even talk of the elections until "The Captain's Hand". In the podcast for this episode, Ron Moore appears to reveal that he has simply forgotten this point. When he refers to the fact that "elections were promised back in "Bastille Day"", Moore says that he remembers that the line in "Bastille Day" was nine months, not seven. This is more than a one-episode goof, because one month after "Bastille Day" in "Colonial Day", it was stated that the elections were six months away. In the podcast it seems that Moore is truly and simply mistaken, and there is no explanation for the descrepancy betwen the "seven months after the attack" figures given in "Bastille Day" and "Colonial Day", and the new "nine months after the attack" figure at the end of season 2.5. It is simply a mistake.

*In this episode they refer to "the captured Heavy Raider", singular. This would imply that only the one Starbuck brought back from Caprica in "Home, Part I" was still functional at all, and the one that crashed into Galactica in "Scattered" was damaged beyond salvage or repair.

*The pro-settlement faction seems to assume that Cylon agents still hiding within the Fleet will not be able to contact the Cylon fleet to track the Colonials, in particular in view of the shielding afforded by the gas cloud near New Caprica.

*When Raptor 612 jumps into the mountain, it jumps into the mountain. RDM confirms in the podcast that by "jumped into the mountain" it doesn't mean "they jumped close to it and thus crashed", it means, exactly like a Star Trek transporter accident, that they materialized from the Jump into solid rock, "half-phased".

*The "religious" angle that Baltar was using was based on the abortion issue. The banning of abortion by Roslin was two-folded. First, it was to try to force humanity's population to grow, and to not allow anything that would hinder that growth, such as abortion. Secondly, the religious card was used to give further support to her ban on abortion if the population decline wasn't enough to persuade others from rejecting. Baltar, noticeably attacks Roslin in the press conference in which she was using the religious reason for the ban, not in the earlier press conference when it was first just based on wanting to prevent any decline of the population.

Notes
*The re-cap for this episode includes scenes not actually shown in previous episodes—for instance, Starbuck demanding to the dying Roslin circa "Epiphanies" that they go back and rescue the Caprica resistance.
*Roslin's comment to Baltar after the last presidential debate, "Why don't you go frak yourself", is likely inspired by the incident on June 22, 2004 in the US Senate, when Vice President Dick Cheney told Senator Patrick Leahy to "go fuck yourself".
*When Baltar sarcastically quips that Zarek (and Six) expect him to just sit around and wait for "The Hand of God" to deliver them something they can use to their advantage against Roslin, he is of course referencing the previous episode titled "The Hand of God". Ironically, Baltar considers himself the hand of God in that episode. Further, a "chance serendipitous event" (namely the discovery of an inhabitable planet) does deliver them something they can use against Roslin.
*Likewise, when Apollo wishes Starbuck "good hunting", there's a tone of concern, and he seems to pause before saying it, as if Apollo meant to say something else but changed his mind. This may be a reference to "33", when Starbuck tells Apollo to say "good hunting" instead of "be careful out there".
*This episode has many parallels to "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I" and "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II": the discovery of an inhabitable planet, Gaeta plotting a Raptor jump dangerously close to a planet surface, Starbuck's use of captured Cylon technology to return to Caprica, the intercutting of several plot threads in the teaser, a character contemplating suicide out of fear of being a Cylon, and difficulties between Helo and Sharon. In addition, Tyrol's assault of Cally is something of a parallel to Helo shooting Sharon in "Kobol's Last Gleaming"—in both cases, a man driven to rage physically and emotionally wounds a woman who loves him.
*When Lt. Gaeta takes his shirt off in the washroom, his tiger tatoo from "Final Cut" can be seen.
*The combined Colonial fleet had 20 Raptors in this episode, of which 1 was destroyed before the end. Previously, Galactica was confirmed to have at least 5 left (The Farm), with the suggestion that there may be as many as 8 (Resistance). Doubtlessly, Pegasus brought at least an equal number of Raptors with it when it joined the Fleet, but 20 is still a high number for this. Perhaps a disproportionately large number of Raptors escaped to Ragnar Anchorage during the Miniseries. Unlike Vipers, Raptors do have FTL drives. We actually saw Boomer and Helo escaping the destruction of their Viper squadron, because Raptors do not engage in frontline combat, and because they have an extenstive ECM suite which Helo was trying to jam the Cylon virus signal with. Indeed, Crashdown was a Raptor ECO, but Boomer stated that he was not from Galactica, but a refugee "from Triton" (A battlestar). Or perhaps like in real life with American Nimitz class Aircraft Carriers that carry a larger number of fighter aircraft compared to older Forrestal class carriers, the Pegasus, being a larger and more modern Battlestar than Galactica, it has the capability to carry a larger complement of Raptors.
**Also, more Raptors could have been built with extra materials after the Viper squadrons were manufactured (Scar).

*The jump error that landed the Raptor in the nebula was attributed to a "firmware error" by the crew. This may be an indication that there was firmware upgrade to deal with the increased FTL jump distances provided by the Cylon computer.
*When Cavil is consoling Tyrol's fears that he might unknowingly be a Cylon sleeper agent, just like Boomer was, Tyrol asks him how he can know for sure. Cavil sarcastically answers that it's because maybe he's a Cylon, and he hasn't seen Tyrol at any of the meetings: Number Six also sarcastically remarked to Baltar in the Miniseries that Aaron Doral could not be a Cylon, because she hadn't "seen him at any of the good Cylon parties"...but of course, Doral actually was a Cylon, implying that Cavil is truly more than he seems.
*Tory actually paraphrases the title of this episode aloud, saying that the new planet offers people in the Fleet the hope that they can "lay down their burdens" and stop running.
*During the premiere airing of this episode on the Sci-Fi Channel, before the Teaser segment a "Parental Discretion Is Advised" black and white message was inserted. At the end of the Teaser, Tyrol beats Cally to a bloody pulp.
*Lee Adama is now wearing a new uniform as Commander of Pegasus: it is a Commander's uniform, denoted by the new red trim (with gold inner trim), and it has a white "Pegasus BSG-62" patch, replacing his old gold "Galactica BSG-75" patch.
*Dualla's photo of Adama is the left half of a group shot with Kara Thrace and his brother Zak Adama. The original belongs to Thrace, and she has kept it in her locker on Galactica since the miniseries.
*Dualla refers to "rivers of milk and honey" on the newly discovered planet. The phrase "land of milk and honey" is a common epithet for the promised land in the Torah, appearing in Exodus 3:8, 3:17, 13:5, 33:3, Leviticus 20:24, Number 13:27, 14:8, 16:13-14, and Deuteronomy 6:3.
*Commander Lee Adama is seen eating noodles with chopsticks in his quarters, just like his father in "33", etc.
*In the podcast, RDM states that originally instead of Starbuck, Helo, and Sharon leading the other Raptors in another Raptor, they would have been flying in the captured Heavy Raider itself. However, the 2 part season finale went overbudget and cuts had to be made, and the cost of building the Heavy Raider interior was deemed prohibitively expensive. Thus, they bring the Heavy Raider computer/organ with them in a normal Raptor. Moore said he believed that fans "wouldn't miss" an actual appearance by the Heavy Raider.
*Col. Tigh appears in this epsiode twice but doesn't speak a single line.
*This is the first time since the Miniseries that Helo is seen fulfilling his duties as an ECO.
*Apollo quips that if they find a habitable planet, he'll build the pilots a bar on it. Actor Jamie Bamber has said in interviews that part of Apollo's backstory is that he didn't know what he was going to do with his life; he's in the Colonial Fleet reserves, not a full-career commitment, etc. He said that right before the attack, Apollo was supposed to be considering leaving the service and just openning up a bar somewhere.
*Actress Leah Cairns said in an interview on June 27th, 2006 that a fan, Sabaceanbabe, wrote a short fanfiction romance story on the messageboards between Racetrack and Helo, and she decided to work it into her character's backstory: Cairns plays her scenes as if Racetrack is attracted to Helo and jealous of Caprica-Sharon. Tahmoh Penikett is aware of this and when playing Helo recognizes this, though he is not attracted to her and loves Caprica-Sharon. In the opening scene of this episode, when Caprica-Sharon is brought into the Pegasus pilot briefing room (essentially the only time in the series so far in which Racetrack, Helo, and Caprica-Sharon were in the same scene), Cairns asked director Michael Rymer if they could film a few extra shots working in these elements she had developed for her backstory, and he agreed, so several extra shots were filmed for this scene: after Helo walks over to Caprica-Sharon, Racetrack looks jealously at them and Helo notices while Caprica-Sharon doesn't. These shots were filmed, but were removed in the editing room. They might appear in the Season 2.5 DVD extras.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Laura Roslin is preparing for the presidential debate
:Laura Roslin: This is what I do, I memorize the talking point, then tear the card…let the pieces fall as they may. It helps.
:William Adama: Yeah, my father used to break pencils before going into court, and then borrow one from the clerk. "Break preconceptions, work with what you have."
:Laura Roslin: You know, I like that. Let me see…:
:Laura breaks a pencil
:Laura Roslin: That's good…. But what happens if the moderator doesn't have a pencil?
:William Adama: Then you're pretty screwed.

*Brother Cavil explains to Chief Tyrol the "value" of prayer:
:Brother Cavil: Do you know how useless prayer is? Chanting, and singing, and mucking about with old half-remembered lines of bad poetry? And you know what it gets you? Exactly nothing.
:Chief Tyrol: Are you sure you're a priest?

*Chief Tyrol is worried that like Galactica-Sharon, he could just as well be another Cylon sleeper agent:
:Chief Tyrol: How do you know I'm human?
:Brother Cavil: Oh, well, maybe because I'm a Cylon and I've never seen you at any of the meetings.

*Baltar and Zarek discuss campaign strategy
:Gaius Baltar: I'm not sure if you're aware, Tom, but the mob isn't usually in the habit of electing ungodly apostates who denegrate people of faith.
:Tom Zarek: Things are gonna turn around. You'll see.
:Gaius Baltar: What is that, advice? Well, thank you for your keen insight, your astounding political acumen. You know, I'm so assured right now, Tom, I'm just going to sit right back and wait for the hand of God to reach down and change my political fortunes!

Official Statements
*In an interview in issue #197 of TV Zone, James Callis (Dr. Gaius Baltar) said: "[T]he arrival of the Pegasus has helped galvanize our characters into who they are and who they’re trying to be. These later episodes [in Season 2] also further drive home the fact that the Galactica’s crew could be exterminated by its own kind, meaning that Humans are potentially far more terrifying an enemy than perhaps the Cylons."

From RDM's blog (March 28, 2006)
* "Why is the fleet so concerned [about] elections? They are running for their lives, so I would think holding elections would be the least of their problems."

: I felt right from the beginning that question of who was in charge and how a democratic society would deal with this situation was one of the fundamental questions of the show. If democracy means anything, it means that people get to decide who their leaders are and what kind of life they choose to lead. And the operative word is "choose." Democracies are about choices, some made intelligently and thoughtfully, and some not so much. Adama and the Galactica were faced with an immediate question as to the role of the military in this surviving population: were they still the servants of the people, or were they the overseers? Adama's choice was to preserve the idea of their society, indeed of their entire civilization while still striving to protect them from their enemies both within and without. It was, and continues to be a difficult balancing act, but as he said in "Resurrection Ship": [[Themes in Battlestar Galactica (RDM)|it's not enough to survive, you have to [be] worthy of suriving]].

: If the military simply took choice away from the people of the fleet, if it simply decided that the senior commanders knew best and that was that, then the people out there in those ships become irrelevant. They're cargo. It's a military world and a military society and everything else is secondary. Down that road lies the cautionary tale of Admiral Cain and the battlestar Pegasus. One Adama and Galactica decided not to go down that road, then the entire panoply of democracy was in play -- representation by consent and elections to determine those representatives.

Interviews
* Nicki Clyne (Cally) talks about Tyrol's maddened assault on Cally:
:It was difficult for people to watch. Even when we were filming it and it was difficult to do. Not only physically, but I had to make it look real. Actually, Aaron (Douglas–Chief Tyrol) actually punched me in the face! (she chuckled as she continued on) And, it’s really difficult, but the funny part about it is that he and I were trying to be brave, but whenever you get knocked in the face I think the instinct is to start crying. I was laughing at the same time, trying to persuade everyone that I was fine, but there were tears streaming down my face. And, Aaron was all, ‘But it wasn’t me.’ I was like, ‘Ok, ok, I am not blaming you, I know it was an accident, but I don’t think I punched myself in the face.’ He felt terrible about it happening. It was fine. Luckily, I didn’t get a bruise and slow everything up.
:But it was difficult and I am trying to block the punches and then my own hand was going into the whole scene and realizing what he had done. It was pretty emotional.
Overview
Leah Cairns grew up in Kamloops, B.C., with dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Those dreams were dashed when she broke her back in a car accident at 16. When her dance team went to an international competition in her graduating year, rather than sit and mope at home, she headed off to Costa Rica, starting an eight-year backpacking odyssey that took her to 36 countries. Prior to returning to Canada, she stumbled into an improv class at an ashram in India. A new career was born.

Leah owns a long haired chihuahua named "Godiva", who is friends with Katee Sackhoff's dog Meatball.

Film and TV
Leah has appeared in CTV’s comedy series Robson Arms. She has also appeared as a regular on the recently cancelled Canadian CITY-TV comedy series "Godiva's", as 'Jenna', a waitress & dancer. She first appeared as the Raptor pilot Racetrack in the season one finale of Battlestar Galactica, and was initially meant as a one-episode character. However, the production team liked her performance so much that Racetrack was expanded into a regular recurring role in season 2. She will also be appearing opposite Al Pacino in the upcoming feature 88 Minutes, as well as in a recurring role on the new TNT series "Saved".
Deleted images
I see you deleted quite a few images the other day (March 31), but you deletet quite a few that were being linked to. Heavy Raider and Basestar. While not directly embedded into the wiki they were used as links and should either be restored, or the links to the images removed.--Mercifull 06:29, 3 April 2006 (CDT)
:Sigh. My bad. It is exceedingly difficult to determine that images being linked in that way are being used, since they don't register in the "what links here" and they end up in the "unused files" report (which is what I was cleaning up). I tried restoring the images, but it appeared to only restore the text. I guess for now I'll remove the dead links, but you might post to the talk page and see if people interested in those articles miss those images. I apologize for trampling over your images in my "cleaning rampage". I did not intend to delete the linked images. Perhaps a short term hack for getting them off of the "unused files" would be to post thumbnails to the talk page. --Steelviper 07:35, 3 April 2006 (CDT)
:Likely the same person or small group of people. The IP Block List shows multiple attempts at accessing after the blocks. And (as you've probably noticed) it's all the same junk. I'm surprised they don't move on to less heavily patrolled waters. This place is pretty active, and their changed are undone fairly quickly (unless they're happy having the links in the history). == Japanese articles ==

Hey SV, as you already know I have been creating some articles in Japanese. When I was just starting I made a couple mistakes. Unfortunately I messed up the titles of the pages, so we have links to pages that really aren't needed and should be, if I may quote from Stewie, "Eliminated." Here are the links that I would appreciate being destroyed:

:1)

:2)

::These links were created incorrectly. #1 has a space between the jp: and the title, I did not do that on any of the other episode guide titles. It can be redirected to this link if you can't eliminate the page: Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I/jp:あんたの負担を落とす, 部分 一. #2 is incorrect because Part I does not jive with the ending of the title in Japanese: 部分 (ニ)=2. So the second link if it can't be destroyed can be redirected to: [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II/jp:あんたの負担を落とす, 部分 ニ].
Great work with the podcast transcription, SV! Something so minor that I hate to even mention it, but for the multipart episodes I use Sci Fi's episode list as my guide for the titling of episodes (i.e. using Part 1 and 2 instead of Part I and II). So when I verified your podcast, I changed the "I's" and "II's" to "One's" or "Two's" and used the long hand version just to err on the side of caution with regards to the Standards and Conventions.
Overview
: Galactica loses over 60% of her water reserves due to sabotage, forcing the fleet into a crisis and Adama to seek a new supply.

Summary
* Boomer finds herself dripping wet in her flight suit, sitting in an equipment room on the flight deck. She is disoriented, and upon opening a duffel bag containing her uniform, she discovers explosives complete with a detonator.
* After drying and dressing herself, she goes to a small-arms locker and finds that a further six detonators are missing, throwing her into a panic and seeking Tyrol’s help.
* Roslin visits Galactica to thank the crew for their hard work in defending the fleet following the recent events (33).
* Protocol is observed during her visit, with officers in dress uniform, etc. Roslin believes this is because Adama is trying to make her look an idiot; Lee Adama informs her that his father ordered the reception out of respect for her position as President.
* The Virgon Express arrives alongside, ready to take on new water supplies. This reveals that Galactica can recycle water for those ships in the fleet that don’t have recycling facilities themselves.
* In the equipment locker, Tyrol and Boomer discuss the missing explosives. Boomer is on the verge of a breakdown. Tyrol promises he’ll see her through the situation, convinced someone is trying to frame her.
* As the water transfer operation commences, a series of explosions rip through the warship, rupturing her water tanks and spewing most of her massive reserves of drinking water into space.
* An investigation of the explosion begins. It is ascertained that 60% of Galactica’s reserves of water have been lost, leaving the fleet with a critical shortage. Because of its recycling/storage capabilities, 16,000 people are dependent on Galactica for drinkable water.
* Pushed to give a reason for the loss of the water, Lieutenant Felix Gaeta presumes that the detonation of a nuclear warhead close to the water tanks (Miniseries) may have weakened the tanks, causing them to rupture.
* During his presentation to investigators, Tyrol admits sabotage was the cause of the explosions, revealing the fact that explosives had been taken from a small-arms locker, but covering for Valerii by saying it is unlikely they will discover who took the explosives as security throughout the ship has been lax, and recordkeeping patchy, at best.
* Adama orders the Raptors to be flown to the nearest star systems in an attempt to find an alternative source of water.
* Reducing the number of people in the inquiry to senior command staff, Roslin and Baltar, Adama reveals the truth about the Cylon agent threat, stating his belief that there is a Cylon infiltrator aboard Galactica.
* Baltar is quizzed about his progress on constructing a working Cylon detector. He makes various excuses for his lack of progress, all of which Adama takes to mean he needs assistance on the project, and so assigns Lieutenant Gaeta to aid him.
* Following the meeting, Gaeta leaves with Baltar, who is not happy about having someone “watching” him. He escapes Gaeta by joining one of Starbuck’s card games and ends up flirting with her.
* Boomer locates water, but has problems trying to report the find while a part of her tries to detonate explosives that have been strapped to her chair.
* When she finally makes the report, she and Crashdown return to Galactica to be greeted like heroes.
* Boomer gets Tyrol to check her seat, where he finds the explosives. He later reveals to Boomer he has handed the explosives to the Master-at-Arms, assuring her that this is good, as it puts the Master onto the same lines of investigation they are now pursuing.
* On Colonial One, impressed at the way Lee Adama helped her through the pomp of her reception on Galactica at the start of the episode, Roslin asks him to become a special advisor to her, to help her understand military jargon and protocol. She also tries to help him come to terms with the destruction of the Olympic Carrier (33), which has been plaguing his conscience.

On Caprica
* Valerii and Helo have returned to Valerii's Raptor, to find it crawling with Cylon warriors.
* Deciding they cannot use it to escape Caprica, they head off to "find another ship".
* Later that night, over a meal and anti-radiation shots, they receive a coded transmission, Valerii prompting Helo into the idea that someone else - probably military - is still alive on the planet.

Summary from scifi.com
Lt. Sharon Valerii wakes up soaking wet in the tool room with an explosive charge in her duffel bag. Shortly afterward, a mysterious explosion destroys all the port-side water tanks on Galactica, creating a crisis for the entire fleet. Sharon can't remember a thing, but all the evidence points to her as a saboteur. She confesses her concern to Chief Tyrol, but he can't believe she's responsible.

As water riots erupt, Commander Adama and President Roslin struggle to contain the crisis, putting all the ships on limited rations and assigning Baltar the job of rooting out any Cylons who may have infiltrated the crew.

Meanwhile, on Cylon-occupied Caprica, another avatar of Sharon struggles to save Helo, her stranded Raptor crewmate.
Questions
*Is Boomer completely unaware of her "Cylon" personality, which apparently planted the explosives? (Answer: Boomer never seems to know, even to her end.)
*If so, why did she "wake up" before her Cylon persona had completely covered its tracks (i.e. got out of the wet clothes, got her back to her bunk, etc., so she'd be completely unaware of her outing to the water tanks)?
*Why did a part of Boomer attempt to blow-up her Raptor when the water-bearing moon was found? Surely she must have been aware that had the Raptor been destroyed, a Search and Rescue mission would have been initiated, with a good probability that the water would have been discovered anyway?
*Is the radio message picked-up by Helo on Caprica genuine, or a Cylon fake, designed to keep him on the planet? (Answer)
*600-odd tons of food a week is a lot of consumables to have available. Where is it all coming from? (Answer: The Fleet comprises many ships, apparently including many supply ships with consumables.)
*Do the Colonials have food recycling capabilities to match their water recycling capabilities?
*Why do the Cylons want to keep Helo on Caprica? (Answer 1, Answer 2)

Analysis
“Water” builds nicely on the events of "33" while adding new drama of its own, revealing more about the central characters while at the same time avoiding the “reset” button: three days on from the Olympic Carrier incident, and the repercussions are still being felt by Lee Adama and Laura Roslin. At the same time Roslin seeks to find a balance in her relationship with Adama, who is also willing to try and move beyond the tension that marked their initial relationship during the fleet’s initial flight from the Cylons: the presentation of the book being something of a peace offering.

But the focus of this episode is obviously “Boomer” Valerii, and raises some interesting questions around her.

It has already been established that some Cylons may not even know they are Cylons until they are “activated” (as stated by Six in the miniseries). “Water” sees a new wrinkle added: that the Cylon “personality” within a Cylon agent can be active without the apparent knowledge of the “human” personality. Boomer's “waking up” scene and subsequent reactions demonstrate that her human persona has no idea of what is going on. Her confusion is genuine and complete, right down to the fact that she has lost track of time (wishing Cally a “good evening”, only for Cally to tell her it is early morning).

However, while this is interesting in itself, it actually masks an even more interesting question: why did Boomer “wake up” while still sopping wet and hiding in the equipment locker? If her Cylon personality wished to remain hidden, why did it not stay in control until she had dried herself off, stowed the duffel bag and the explosives and returned to her bunk? That she finds herself in such a state would tend to suggest that her Cylon personality is not in full control when conscious. Could it be that Valerii’s “programming” as a human is a little too strong, and that there is some kind of internal struggle going on inside her? (Given the events in Home, Part II and other second season episodes, it may well be that the Valerii model is flawed and can reprogram itself for self-preservation, or may not have full defenses against its human personality plant.)

If this is the case, then might the same conflict overcome her “sister” on Caprica? If so, there is potential for whatever the Cylons have in mind for Helo to go awry. (Answer: Caprica Valerii does, indeed, become a turncoat or yet another Cylon manipulation tactic.)

The episode also reveals a little more about Galactica’s capabilities: the fact that her water recycling systems are around 100% efficient - so much so that she can operate for years without needing to take on fresh water supplies, and she's more than able to recycle water on behalf of a third of the other vessels in the fleet - thus supplying an additional 16,000 people with fresh water. While this is interesting in itself, that the production crew tackle such a vital requirement as water so early on in the series is highly suggestive that they do not intend to forget that some 45,000 people are going to require a lot of food and drink. Given the fact that this episode highlights the food requirements – some 590 tons a week - would tend to indicate this is an issue that will be dealt with at some point in the future. It’s hard to imagine the fleet can supply this much food to its people indefinitely.

Overall, another outstanding episode - lead by a very strong "A" storyline involving Boomer and the water sabotage, but with more than enough scope to provide insight into the characters and their developing relationships without bogging down the action. Not even Tigh's tightrope walk with alcoholism is forgotten, thanks to his discovery of his five fingers of booze. And it is nice to see Galactica still continues to carry the scars for her first run-in with the Cylons back in the mini - the outer skin of the forward end of her portside flight pod is still something of a mess.

Notes
*Galactica has at least 5 Raptors on board.
*Colonials have an equivalent plastic explosive to C-4 (called G-4).
*The Cylons have stood down from their attacks of 33.

:One of the strange things about writing and producing television is the delay between action and reaction. Tomorrow night's episode was written almost a year ago. The battles, thoughts, emotions, disappointments, and victories happened in what seems like the distant past, so when I sit down to watch the show along with the rest of you (and I do watch them on the air) it's like seeing a page out of an old year book. I can remember bits and pieces of the production process, the early drafts of the script, the days spent in the editing bay playing with the footage and waiting for the visual effects to be completed, but none of it is current, all of it belongs to a season now firmly planted in the past.

:However, I do find that the same distance from the rigors of production also afford a better vantage point for watching the show with something approaching objectivity. You get so used to an episode during all the aspects of production that the simple pleasure of watching it as a piece of entertainment is slowly vacuumed away over time. Only now, months after the fact, can I watch these shows from a little remove and my impressions of the episodes are often not the same as when we produced them.

:For instance, during the shoot of "Water" and shortly afterward, I was acutely aware of just how long the script was and how much material was going to have to be lost along the way. I was fairly upset with myself for writing something so bloated and large that it was killing us on the stage and would later require major surgery in the editing room to make our mandated runtime. The first cut of "Water" ran 10-12 minutes long -- essentially an entire act that had to go -- and for a long time when I watched the final locked picture I was always uncomfortably aware of the "cheats" involved. That is, the dropped scenes, the internal cuts made to scenes that made a hash of some of the logic I'd tried to lay out, the half-expressed thoughts, the missing emotional beats, etc.

:However, when I saw the final aired episode, I was hard-pressed to even remember most of the cuts or why they had bothered me in the first place. (Although I still missed a nice bit with Baltar in the Wardroom, where he tossed off a theory of how six small charges could've blown open the water tank, as it was both helpful to the plot and an entertaining bit of grandstanding by the character.) Frankly, I used to think of "Water" as one of the weaker shows in the first season, but now it seems like a fairly coherent piece.

:Of course, this kind of shift in perspective after shedding the baggage of production works both ways, and I've found that sometimes revisited shows much later that I'd always considered to be "classics" turned out to lose their charm along with the experience of making it. So as we go forward, I'm both excited and vaguely terrified at how I'll view the rest of the season.

:Speaking of excited and terrified, I must admit to being overwhelmed by the response you've generated regarding this blog. There's a remarkable backlog of questions on the board and I'll try to both post here more often and answer more of your questions. I don't know what to tell you in terms of what will catch my eye, but I'll try to look for both the straight-ahead fan questions and the more off the wall questions -- don't be afraid to venture far off-topic, some of the more interesting discussions I had at Trek had nothing to do with the show itself.
He is young, loyal, capable, resourceful and attracted to Valerii. Those aboard Galactica seem to find his real name cumbersome or unwieldy. He's almost always addressed by his callsign, "Helo."

Biography
At the time of the Cylon Attack, Lt. Karl Agathon, serial number PK-789934, is on patrol in Valerii's Raptor flying with battlestar Galactica's last fully-operational Viper squadron, and witnesses the destruction of the squadron by Cylon Raiders, after the latter exploits the Command Navigation Program to disable the Vipers.

Following the attack, Agathon and Valerii attempt to return to Galactica, avoiding Cylon patrols, but are unsuccessful: their Raptor is damaged in a Cylon missile strike, and Helo receives a wound in his leg from shrapnel that pierces their ship. As a result of the damage received, the Raptor is forced down on Caprica, where Valerii makes emergency repairs. Moments after Valerii's repairs, their ship is mobbed by civilians desperate to get off the planet.

With limited space for survivors aboard the Raptor, Agathon volunteers his seat to Dr. Gaius Baltar and remains on Caprica in the hope that Baltar will be of benefit to the Colonials in their renewed fight against the Cylons. Both Helo and Boomer feel that there is no chance that he will survive the Cylon nuclear attack on Caprica, but he selflessly chooses to stay behind anyway, giving up his own life so Baltar can get to Galactica.

Marooned
After Boomer's departure, Helo apparently separates from the surviving refugees and flees from Cylon ground forces. After six days on Caprica, surviving on anti-radiation medications from his survival pack, he is captured after noticing a version of the Cylon known (secretly only to Gaius Baltar) as Number Six.

Helo is "rescued" by a copy of Sharon Valerii, unaware that this Sharon is a copy and not the one who abandoned him on Caprica. She guides him across Caprica as part of an elaborate (if potentially hastily conceived) plan / experiment designed to make this second Valerii the object of Agathon's affections. Several situations are engineered to make this happen:

*A "honey trap" offering reasonably secure accommodations (a "fall-out shelter") together with sufficient supplies for two people beneath a restaurant (Act of Contrition)
*Engineering Valerii's capture to test Helo's loyalty towards her (You Can't Go Home Again / Litmus)
*Establishing a further (long-term) "honey trap" for Helo and Valerii in the wilderness of Caprica.

However, the Cylon plan goes awry when Valerii appears to fall in love with Agathon. She forces them both on the run once more, this time genuinely seeking to escape from Caprica via the military base at Delphi, now under Cylon control.

During their attempts to reach Delphi, Agathon witnesses a troop of Cylon Centurions being lead by Number Six - the woman he thought had been killed when Valerii rescued him. This draws him to the conclusion that the Cylons are using human clones they have created (Colonial Day). Once at Delphi, Agathon receives another shock: not only are further versions of Six on-hand - he comes face-to-face with another Valerii copy, revealing the full truth about the woman known as "Boomer" to him. Believing he was lured into a trap, Agathon goes on the run, leaving Valerii at the base.

The Valerii copy that Helo has paired with later catches up with him, and while he shoots her in the arm, he does not kill her as she might be of use to him in escaping the planet. Caprica-Valerii then informs Helo that she is pregnant with his child, and that they should go to the Delphi Museum. There, Agathon is reunited with Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (who just arrived from Galactica using a stolen Cylon Raider) immediately after she kills a copy of Number Six and retrieves the Arrow of Apollo. Thrace, realizing immediately that Valerii is a Cylon (knowing much earlier than Helo that Cylons can mimic human form) tries to kill Valerii, but Agathon stops her because she is pregnant ("Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II", "Scattered").

Valerii runs away out of fear of Thrace, taking her Cylon Raider. Fearing that Number Six will finish transferring her consciousness to a new body and warn the Cylons about the humans' presence in Delphi, Agathon and Thrace make their way to Thrace's old apartment ("Scattered", "Valley of Darkness"). Later, Thrace and Agathon join up with the human resistance on Caprica (Resistance).

The Resistance and Escape from Caprica
Agathon, Anders and others later rescue Thrace from the Cylons' "hospital". Valerii returns to aid Helo in locating the missing Thrace, and later saves the day by gunning down several Centurions in a stolen Heavy Raider. Helo, Thrace, and Valerii leave Caprica en route to the Fleet (The Farm). The group lands on the Astral Queen, which has broken off from the rest of the Fleet (Home, Part I). When Lee Adama grabs the new copy of Valerii and threatens to shoot her, Helo raises his gun to Lee's head in response. They are calmed by Roslin, who then orders Valerii thrown out of an airlock. Valerii convinces Roslin of her usefulness before this happens, and later accompanies Helo and others to Kobol to find the Tomb of Athena (Home, Part I). On the way to the Tomb of Athena, Apollo remarks to Starbuck that he is disturbed that Helo and this Valerii copy love each other, and Helo admits to Valerii that he now loves and trusts her. When they finally reach the tomb, Commander Adama orders Helo to stay outside with Valerii and Tom Zarek while Chief Tyrol guards all of them. With the successful gathering of information on the whereabouts of Earth, Helo and the group return to Galactica and the reunified Fleet.

Home on Galactica
Helo's welcome-home to Galactica, months after being declared KIA on Caprica (Home, Part II), isn't a generally warm one. Many in the crew find his romance with the Caprica Valerii disquieting or disgusting. A few crew warm up to Helo after his suggestion of using carbon composites on the new fighter, the Blackbird, turns Tyrol's pet project into a significant stealth technology (Flight of the Phoenix).

Chief Tyrol is still nursing the loss of Boomer (the Galactica copy of Valerii that left Helo on Caprica and later shoots Commander Adama), and now must deal with the return of another Valerii, her "memories" of him, and the fact that Helo is romantically involved with her. The friction between Helo and Tyrol becomes too much and a fight ensues before both realize that fighting will gain them little. The two tacitly appear to accept the awkward situation for what it is.

Helo and Tyrol learn of the gang-rape of the captured Cylon on battlestar Pegasus, and are shocked to learn that the "Cylon interrogator", Lieutenant Alistair Thorne, would be "interrogating" the incarcerated Valerii that day. Prior to this discovery, Helo is prepared to fight the drunken Pegasus crewmembers over their disrespect, but Tyrol realizes what is coming for Valerii and convinces him to head to the brig to her aid. While apparently successful in stopping the assault, the two are arrested and taken to Pegasus when Thorne is accidentally killed. Admiral Helena Cain conducts summary courts-martial on the two Galactica crewmembers, finding them guilty and sentencing them to execution. When Commander Adama hears of this abrupt treatment, he launches a Raptor with Marine units as well as his Viper squadrons to get Helo and Tyrol back. A standoff ensues, with not only Helo's and Tyrol's lives in the balance, but thousands of others in the Fleet (Pegasus).

Aboard the Pegasus
After Starbuck returned with images of the Resurrection Ship, Adama and Cain agreed to a truce. Helo and Tyrol were given a stay of execution, but not a pardon. While they were imprisoned aboard the Pegasus, a pair of deck hands, irate about Thorne's death, assaulted them. Jack Fisk, the XO of the Pegasus, put a stop to this by citing regulations, but rebuffed Helo's thanks. Like the deck crew, Fisk had been saved from death by Thorne, and he was not sympathetic to Valerii, whom he viewed as a machine.

After the destruction of the Resurrection Ship and the death of Admiral Cain, Fisk became Commander of the Pegasus. He returned Helo and Tyrol to the Galactica, where the former was joyfully received by Valerii.

The Events of Epiphanies
Things got ugly when the dying President Roslin ordered the hybrid baby aborted. Helo attempted to dissuade Adama from carrying out the order in private conversation in the Admiral's office, but failed. When Valerii was being brought to the medical bay for the abortion, Helo blocked the door, his hand on his pistol. He offered to take Boomer aboard a Raptor and leave the Fleet, but was rebuffed by Adama, who told him, "You're a soldier." Helo retorted that he was a father, like Adama.

Fortunately, Baltar defused a potentially violent incident by arriving with his report on the medically useful nature of the hybrid fetus. The consequences from his action remain to be seen, although since he was later seen working out in the gym with Starbuck both before and after the destruction of Scar (Raider), it is unlikely he was punished.

The Hybrid Birth
Helo was present when Hera, the human-Cylon hybrid, was born. He and Sharon marvelled at their baby, and Helo shocked Sharon when he said that it made one almost believe in the Cylon God. When Sharon attacked Cottle and accused him of murder after he told her the baby had died, Helo tried to restrain her and ended up with Marines pointing guns at him while Sharon was taken back to her cell.

Caprica SAR & New Caprica
Despite Valerii's continued belief that Cottle and the other humans killed Hera, Helo was able to convince her to assist Kara Thrace's plan for the rescue of Samuel Anders and his Caprica resistance group (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I). Helo and the others manage to survive the Cylon assault after Cavil informs them that the Cylons have left the Colonies.

With the happenstance discovery of the so-called New Caprica, the relationship between Helo and Sharon Valerii became increasingly strained, due primarily to her growing depression over the loss of their child and the fact that Valerii did not inform the SAR team that Caprica-Cavil was a Cylon agent.

It is unknown what happened to his Sharon Valerii during the year Galactica and Pegasus patrolled the orbit around New Caprica. However, Agathon was seen acting as a replacement to Felix Gaeta as Galacticas tactical officer (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II) and may have been promoted to a new position as Galactica's XO.

Notes
Name
The new Battlestar Galactica plays heavily on Greek mythology / history (the Olympian Gods, use of names such as Delphi, etc.). Therefore it might be interesting to note that "Agathon" may be derived from Agathos Daemon - meaning good spirit, one of the group of spirits (daemons) that lie between the gods and mortals. In fact, the prefix 'Agatho-' simply means 'good', which sums up Helo's character well. Also, the nickname Helo bears some similarity to Helios/Helius, the greek god of the sun. Helo is also slang for helicopter, and the Raptor craft Helo and Boomer fly is fashioned after a US Army helicopter.

Character
Helo's full name (or even his fate) wasn't revealed until "33". He was initially intended as an expendable character; originally he was supposed to have actually died when the Raptor had to leave him behind on Caprica. Penikett's performance in the mini-series convinced TPTB otherwise. Curiously, Helo's second replacement on "Boomer" Valerii's Raptor, Racetrack, was also intended as a one-shot character, but was retained by TPTB for similar reasons as Penikett's character and his performance.

*While he is shown in a Raptor during the funeral of his daughter in Downloaded, Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I is the first time he has done his job as ECO on screen since the Miniseries.
Admiral Helena Cain conducts summary courts-martial on the two Galactica crewmembers, finding them guilty and slating them for execution. When Commander Adama hears of this abrupt treatment, he launches a Raptor with Marine units as well as his Viper squadrons to get Helo and Tyrol back. A standoff ensues, with not only Helo's life in the balance, but thousands of others in the Fleet (Pegasus).

He returned Helo and Tyrol to the Galactica, where the former was joyfully received by Boomer.

The Events of Epiphanies
Things got ugly when the dying President Roslin ordered the hybrid baby aborted. Helo attempted to dissuade Adama from carrying out the order in private conversation in the Admiral's office, but failed. When Boomer was being brought to the medical bay for the abortion, Helo blocked the door with his hand on his pistol. He offered to take Boomer aboard a Raptor and leave the Fleet, but was rebuffed by Adama, who told him, "You're a soldier." Helo retorted that he was a father, like Adama.

Fortunately, Baltar defused a potentially violent incident by arriving with his report on the medically-useful nature of the hybrid fetus. The consequences from this action remain to be seen, although since he was seen hanging around the gym with Starbuck after the destruction of Scar (Raider), it is unlikely he was punished.

The Hybrid Birth
Helo was present when Hera, the human-Cylon hybrid, was born. He and Sharon marvelled at the baby, and Helo said that it made one almost believe in the Cylon God. When Sharon attacked Cottle after he told her the baby had died, Helo tried to restrain her and ended up with Marines pointing guns at him while Sharon was taken back to her cell.

Caprica SAR & New Caprica
Despite Valerii's continued belief that Cottle and the other humans had killed Hera, Valerii assisted Kara Thrace's plan for the rescue of Samuel Anders and his Caprica resistance group (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I). He manages to survive the Cylon assault after Cavil informed them that the Cylons had left the Colonies.

With the happenstance discovery of the so-called New Caprica, the relationship between himself and Sharon Valerii became increasingly strained, due primarily to the fact that Valerii did not inform the SAR team that Caprica-Cavil had been a Cylon agent.

It is unknown what happend to his Sharon Valerii during the year Galactica and Pegasus patrolled the orbit around New Caprica. However, Agathon replaced Felix Gaeta as Galacticas tactical officer (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Notes
