Overview
When two Raptors go missing after a training mission, new Pegasus commander Barry Garner challenges Admiral Adama's orders by sending his battlestar directly into the rescue zone &mdash; and a trap.

Summary
*Two Raptors begin a training mission outside Pegasus, which is near a binary star that causes DRADIS and communications interference. Shortly after, contact with the Raptors is lost.

*On Galactica, Chief Tyrol and the deck crew are in the process of unloading containers, Chief Tyrol finds a pregnant teenager inside who asks for Dr. Cottle.

*Lee Adama, now promoted to Major, arrives as acting XO on the battlestar Pegasus, where he runs into Kara Thrace. Both report to Commander Garner in Pegasus CIC. Garner argues with now-Captain Thrace over the disappearance of the Raptors.

*Commander Garner and Major Adama talk in private about the discipline on Pegasus. Garner thinks that Starbuck is a huge part of the problem and that the virtues learned in his experience as an engineer would do the ship some good.

*On Colonial One, President Roslin is hounded by her new aide, Tory Foster, about preparing for the coming election. Elsewhere, Tom Zarek discusses the idea of presidency. He concedes he's not able to garner support, but is willing to support someone more popular: Dr. Baltar.

*Back on Galactica, Dr. Cottle & Admiral Adama discuss the fate of the young woman found in the container, Rya Kibby. Kibby mentions the fact that she doesn't want to keep the baby, but Admiral Adama (on request from the Gemenese delegate) is intent on sending her back to her family. Dr. Cottle suggests that she request asylum aboard Galactica.

*News of Rya Kibby's asylum request raises a stir throughout the Fleet. President Roslin discusses the issue with Admiral Adama, Tory Foster, and Delegate Sarah Porter from Gemenon. Delegate Porter states that abortion is a obscenity and demands that the girl be returned to her parents. Afterwards, President Roslin mentions she's not willing to even consider the idea of abortion in general, having fought for a woman's right to control her body for her entire career, but Admiral Adama reminds her that their population must increase in order to survive.

*While reviewing the last transmissions from the Raptors, Starbuck discovers the reason for the missing Raptors may be that they responded to a distress call. She attempts to bring this up with Commander Garner, who flatly rejects the theory. Additional search parties learn of the distress call that lured the first Raptors away. Commander Garner decides to start preparing the Pegasus for a Jump.

*Over wireless, Commander Garner, Major Adama, and Admiral Adama discuss the missing Raptor situation. Commander Garner feels that Pegasus should Jump to bring home the missing crews and ships, while the Admiral and Major believe it may be a trap and orders a 5-Raptor recon mission to ascertain the training mission's fate.

*Garner orders a Jump despite Admiral Adama's orders. SAR Raptors at the rescue site find both Raptors, but the crews are dead. At that moment, three basestars ambush Pegasus with conventional and nuclear missile barrages seconds after their arrival.

*Pegasus FTL drive is disabled. Garner attempts to determine the FTL failure's cause from CIC., but the Engineering crew are confused from the attack. Commander Garner heads down to Engineering to assess the damage, and transfers command of Pegasus to Major Adama. Adama orders Pegasus to target one of the Basestars with its forward batteries, severely damaging the basestar and buying them more time.

*Garner's successful repair of their FTL system allows Pegasus to escape. Commander Garner, however, dies in the process due to lack of oxygen.

*In Admiral Adama's quarters, the Admiral and Major Adama review the reports from the incident on Pegasus. After discussing the late Pegasus commander, the Admiral offers his son the job of commanding Pegasus, along with a promotion to Commander.

*Gaius Baltar proclaims his candidacy for President of the Colonies in the Presidential election in the midst of a press conference called by President Roslin regarding abortion in the Fleet.

Questions
*Would Adama allow Dr. Cottle to be arrested? From the episode, he is of the opinion that he would do what is necessary.
**Given that Cottle is the only real doctor left in the fleet, Adama may be hesitant to take such an action.
***This idea is supported by Cottle's behavior toward officers: Adama is the only one to whom he shows even marginal respect.
**Are there no doctors on Pegasus? If Cain had a large civilian fleet to recruit from, it is likely that she would have drafted some doctors into service.
*Was Baltar's report real, or was it just invented to produce the opportunity to drive his wedge?
**With the constant Cylon attacks to the Fleet (barring the unexpected return of Pegasus) the population is almost always declining, as noted by Admiral Adama.
*Who will replace Baltar as Roslin's Vice President?
**Can Roslin actually pick another Vice President, under Colonial law, if Baltar refuses to resign? One of the reporters at the end actually directly asked if Baltar would remain as Vice President. Perhaps Roslin cannot forcibly remove Baltar from his office just because he's running aginst her.
***If Colonial law works similarly to American political protocol, Baltar was elected in his own right. For example, George Bush cannot force Dick Cheney to resign, only Mr. Cheney himself can elect to resign. Interestingly, 204 years ago, US President John Adams faced a similar situation: His own Vice-President, Thomas Jefferson, plotted Adams' political downfall.
*How will Zarek position himself in the Baltar campaign?
**It is likely that Zarek hopes to become Vice President himself.
***Does Zarek plan to have Baltar killed, as per his plan in "Colonial Day"?
****Zarek actually seems willing to make a beneficial alliance with Baltar, which Roslin would never agree to.
****Baltar may be a political novice but he's no fool; he would spot that a mile away. In fact, Baltar specifically asks Zarek what he (Zarek) would want in return. Zarek gave a diplomatic answer rather than openly ask for the VP slot.
*Will Tigh accept the fact that Lee Adama now outranks him and has command of a ship? Or does Saul have no interest in command and already told Admiral Adama that before the posting was offered to Lee?
**As mentioned in "Scattered," Col. Tigh was never really interested in commanding a battlestar.
*What will happen to Rya now that she has been granted asylum on Galactica?
*Why was Lee promoted straight from Major to Commander? Can a Colonel not be placed in command of a battlestar for long-term purposes?
**No. Colonel Jack Fisk was promoted to Commander of Pegasus before his death. It appears to be something of a rank nomenclature formality, as Garner was promoted up from being head of engineering. Compare to the established terminology convention on Star Trek for always referring to the commanding officer of a ship as "Captain", even if that officer does not hold that specific rank.
***The use of "captain" is done in real life as well. In the US Navy, a person in the command of a vessel is referred to as "Captain" even if his actual rank is Lieutenant Commander, Ensign or even if he/she is a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO).
*Had Garner been serving as XO to Pegasus's previous commander, the late Jack Fisk?
*Does the fact that the Cylons had such a large force waiting to ambush Pegasus indicate that they have a new Resurrection Ship in place?
**Given that there were three basestars in wait, it is more likely that the Cylons opted on surprise and sheer numbers to succeed. Still, Pegasus caused one basestar to retreat, despite being outnumbered. It is likely that the lack of a Resurrection Ship resulted in the basestar's retreat.
**Before, the Cylons were confident in making a frontal assault on a battlestar with a single basestar, in "Scattered", etc. They are markedly less confident now.
*How does the double layer flight pod system on Pegasus operate? Just before the battlestar jumps away from the ambush, there is a short sequence of Vipers returning to the ship that shows them landing on two distinct levels of the flight pod, with Vipers landing on the lower level being upside down with respect to Pegasus. Both the Colonials and Cylons obviously have some form of artificial gravity on their spacecraft, so this explains why such an arrangement is possible.
**For more on the use of artificial gravity, see the article, Science in the Re-imagined Series.
*How could abortion be legal and established throughout the colonies despite being against the religious views of at least one planet? Was it introduced only recently?
**Abortion may have been illegal or tightly-curtailed on that one planet. How much power did the Colonial political structure give to individual planets or smaller geographic areas?
***On present day Earth, there are several countries which have legalized abortion, but which have fundamentalist internal regions/cultural subgroups which frown upon it. The Twelve Colonies were ruled by a federal system, not a loose confederation adhering to principles of States' Rights, etc.; the majority view in the federal government could probably enforce such laws on member worlds.
*What kind of equipment is available to fix small breaches such as the one in the "Pegasus" Engine room?
** Helo uses a hand-held pressure pad to seal a minor breach in the damaged Raptor during the Miniseries right after he receives his leg wound. Would such a device not help here?
***Maybe not all hull breaches are small enough to fix that way.
***There may not have been time to patch it, the ship was under heavy fire and could be destroyed at any moment; Restoring the FTL drive was the priority.
*Now that Lee Adama is commanding Pegasus, who does he have for an XO since it is apparent both battlestars are short field grade officers? Does he elevate Stinger to XO, or does he bring someone from Galactica?

Analysis
*When Baltar announces his candidacy for the Presidency, Number Six applauds with a slow clap. This action runs in parallel to how then-Commander William Adama led the entire crew in a long, drawn-out slow clap in respect of President Roslin when she was re-instated to her office in "Home, Part II".
*Survivor count is decremented by six from "Sacrifice", but seven people died in that episode - terrorists Sesha Abinell, Vinson, Page and Chu, two unnamed marines, and civilian Billy Keikeya. At least one birth must have taken place to offset the population count between the two episodes.
*Based on the Colonial One whiteboard seen toward the end of the episode, only five people died as a result of the ambush on Pegasus: Richard "Buster" Bayer, Lyla "Shark" Ellway, the unnamed crew of Raptor 314, and Commander Barry Garner.
**This casualty figure is conspicuously low, considering that Galactica lost 85 crewmen as the result of a hit by a single nuclear missile in the miniseries, while Pegasus is hit with no less than three in this episode.
**On the other hand, it is at least consistent with the surprisingly low number of casualties incurred in the Battle of the Resurrection Ship, and may indicate that the hull armor on Pegasus is significantly stronger than on Galactica, which has many conspicuously bare structural ribs.
**A large number of the casualties Galactica incurred were due to the firefighting crews failure to use breathing gear when Tigh ordered the flight pod vented. However, based on dialogue in this episode, it appears that the Pegasus firefighting teams did take this precaution.
*In the course of this episode's timeline, Lee Adama rises from the rank of Captain (CAG of Galactica) to Major (No details are given on that posting except Adama was assigned to Pegasus), to Commander and CO of Pegasus in the wake of Commander Barry Garner's death saving his ship.
**Major Adama's duty was intended as a temporary stint as Pegasus acting XO, to familiarize himself with the duties of a senior officer. In the opening scene, he tells Anastasia Dualla that he expects to return to Galactica "in a couple of weeks".
*Garner's decision to mount a rescue operation in contravention of his commanding officer's orders is an explicit parallel to "Pegasus", down to the choice of words:
:Adama: "I'm getting my men."
:Garner: "I'm going to get our men."
*Kara Thrace's posting is finally clarified in this episode: she is now serving as CAG on Galactica.
**She was transferred to Pegasus in "Pegasus" and then promoted to that ship's CAG over Cole "Stinger" Taylor in "Resurrection Ship, Part I". In "Epiphanies", it is made clear that Lee Adama regained his posting as Galactica's CAG. In "Epiphanies", Thrace is seen piloting one of Galactica's Mk. II Vipers with Kat; in "Scar" she is serving on Galactica, and appears to have assumed the majority of Adama's responsibilities as CAG, although she still takes orders from him.
**During this episode it's mentioned that she's only been on board Pegasus for four days before getting thrown in the brig, so clearly she isn't Pegasus's CAG any longer. Thus, despite the great esteem Cain held her in (she was the second speaker at Cain's funeral, after Jack Fisk), it seems clear that she was removed from her position on Pegasus sometime after Cain's death.
*Although there's no clear evidence of this, it's nice to imagine that when Admiral Adama promoted his son to Commander, he gave Lee his old Commander rank insignia.

Notes
*Timeline-wise, Baltar says that he made an initial projection of the fleet's population "over seven months ago". This would have been before the arrival of Pegasus, since he said he factored in the arrival of her crew subsequently.
*Baltar states that he added the crew of the Pegasus into his calculations, with the result of the end of the human race within 18 years at current attrition rates.
*It has been "almost a month" since Apollo was shot in "Sacrifice".
*The recap at the beginning of this episode includes two scenes that did not actually appear in any previous episode, but were constructed by redubbing existing footage.
**The scene where Colonel Tigh and Admiral Adama discuss Garner's promotion is constructed from the scene in "Black Market" when Adama and Tigh are telling Apollo to go to Pegasus on the hangar deck. The scene has been cleverly redubbed, so that Adama is saying entirely new lines when the camera is pointed at Tigh (not at Adama's face), and then Tigh says new lines when the camera is pointed at Adama.
**The same technique is used when Baltar is talking to Gina: when the camera is pointed at Baltar, we hear Gina saying "You must betray Roslin and run for President in the upcoming election", but this was never heard in the aired version of "Epiphanies".
*Capt. Cole "Stinger" Taylor is still onboard Pegasus, mentioned by Capt. Thrace as being in the brig for insubordination.
*The adjectival form of "Gemenon" is "Gemenese".
*Under Gemenese law, minors are the "property" of their parents.
*Mercury class battlestars do not need to retract their flight pods prior to a jump, unlike the Galactica type.
*The coolant pressure gauges on Pegasus measure in PSI, presumably Pound-force per square inch. This is consistent with the use of customary units on the Viper Mk. II's Altimeter, seen in "Act of Contrition".
*This is the fourth episode of the season in which Grace Park has not appeared as Sharon Valerii.
*Writer Jeff Vlaming references Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" when he has Laura Roslin tell Quorum of Twelve delegate Sarah Porter, "you have your pound of flesh".
*Sharon warned Admiral Adama in the previous episode, "Sacrifice", that the Cylons might try to lay ambushes near some pulsar stars ahead of their position, due to DRADIS interference.
*Based on the promo images for the episodes, it appears that in a deleted scene, Rya tried to kill herself by overdosing on pills when she was told she couldn't have an abortion, and she had to be resuscitated.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Following the Cylon ambush of Pegasus and the death of Commander Garner
:Admiral Adama: In your opinion, off the record, what was Garner's flaw?
:Major Lee Adama: He was used to working with machines. Command is about people.
:Admiral Adama: Remember that, as you take command of "The Beast" (Pegasus). Garner was my decision; His failures, my responsibility. Don't let me fail a second time. Congratulations, Commander.

*Responding to President Roslin's decision to criminalize abortion:
:Vice-President Baltar: It is true in the light of recent events, the President may have lost support in some quarters. I would ask the people to understand that if this is an extreme decision, we live in extreme times. The decision has been made with good faith. I, however, cannot with good conscience support it. I am so sorry, Madame President, but the Cylon have no understanding the meaning of the word "freedom". How could they? They're programmed...machines. Every time you take away one of our freedoms, every time we restrict or curtail one of our rights, we become one step closer to being like them. As the Vice-President, I am bound to follow the administration's lead; As President, I should have no such strictures. Given the current situation, I'm afraid that I have no alternative but to announce that I am, as of now, a candidate for the Presidency.

Specialist Cally is a deckhand aboard battlestar Galactica assigned to Chief Galen Tyrol. At the time of the Cylon Attack on the Twelve Colonies, she is attached to Deck Crew 5 and responsible for Viper and Raptor maintenance (Mini-Series). She is particularly adept at finding ways around the lack of replacement parts aboard Galactica, seen in her jury-rigging of several Vipers and Raptors.

Cally only joined the Colonial Fleet as a means to pay for dental school (Fragged).

According to Ronald D. Moore's blog, Cally's term of required service ended at the same time that Galactica was to be decomissioned, and she was about to be honorably discharged and return to civilian life when the Cylons attacked, ending those plans.

Biography
Cally is part of a Galactica team sent to the Astral Queen in order to enlist the help of convicts in ice mining operations (Bastille Day). Taken captive by the escaped immates, she is nearly raped by prisoner Mason, who shoots her after she bites his ear off in defense. Cally is returned to Galactica's sickbay for treatment, where she was given the nickname "Specialist Lazy" in jest by her comrades. It appears that Cally is not fond of FTL Jumps (Miniseries), possibly because she suffers nausea during them (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).

Less than a week later, Cally had returned to duty aboard Galactica. When it was revealed that Cylons can take human form she argued against Jammer's paranoia-mongering, pointing out that that is exactly what the Cylons want. Along with the rest of the deck crew, she then lied under oath to protect the Chief (Litmus). For the next several weeks, Cally would assist Chief Tyrol in examining the captured Cylon Raider brought aboard Galactica (Six Degrees of Separation). Cally later celebrates with the rest of the crew on the flight deck when the Viper squadrons return from their sucessful mission against a Cylon refinery base, to secure more tylium supplies for the fleet (The Hand of God).

Cally is later selected to join a Raptor Scout team bound for Kobol (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). Her Raptor is attacked upon emerging from a Jump, resulting in a crash on Kobol. As one of the few that was relatively unhurt, she is charged with caring for the injured crewmen. Cally later returns to the crash site with Chief Tyrol and Tarn, and barely makes it back alive with a medkit for Socinus (Scattered). However, it is too late to save Socinus and Tyrol administers Morpha to aid him in a painless death, which greatly saddens Cally (Valley of Darkness).

Cally seems as prone to anger after a terrible event as Chief Tyrol, but unlike him, she tends to take direct action as a result, rather than becoming immobile or overly irrational.

While stranded, Crashdown attempts to lead a hopeless attack on a Cylon Centurion anti-aircraft emplacement, and gives Cally an assuredly suicidal order to draw the Centurions' fire. Cally is so terrified at carrying out the impossible order that she freezes in place instead of advancing. Losing control and showing his imcompetence in leadership, Crashdown points a gun at Cally's head and threatens to shoot her if she does not obey. Just before Crashdown counts to three to shoot Cally, Dr. Gaius Baltar shoots him in the back, killing Crashdown instantly. The group fights a running battle with the Centurions to reach and destroy the Dradis dish supporting the Cylon gun emplacement. Seelix is shot, but Cally saves her life by carrying her further ahead. A rescue team of Raptors arrives, and Cally returns to Galactica with the survivors (Fragged).

Cally's anger transfers to Baltar when Tyrol was arrested and accused of being a Cylon himself due to his past relationship with Boomer, and threatens to reveal Baltar's part in Crashdown's death if Baltar does not act to clear Tyrol's name. Cally later shoots and kills the Galactica copy of Sharon Valerii because she is outraged that Chief Tyrol was thrown in the brig and was wrongly suspected of being a Cylon because of her (Resistance). Cally is imprisoned in the brig. At Tyrol's request, Commander Adama gives Cally a lenient sentence of 30 days for "discharging a firearm without permission" (The Farm).

After her 30 day sentence is finished, Cally is released from the brig, and a welcome back party is thrown for her on the hangar deck by the deck crew. Chief Tyrol was still upset with her for killing Boomer, though Cally is grateful to the Chief for putting in a good word for her with Adama. She aids Tyrol in the construction of the Blackbird. By the time they finish construction, he reconciles with her (Flight of the Phoenix).

Along with the rest of the crew, Cally is jubilant when the long-thought destroyed battlestar Pegasus finds Galactica. However, she is disgusted when several drunken Pegasus crewmen brag about repeatedly raping the captured Cylon agent known as Gina, a reaction probably made stronger for her because she herself survived an attempted rape. Chief Tyrol and Lt. Karl "Helo" Agathon are arrested and taken aboard Pegasus for causing the accidental death of Pegasus' Lt. Alistair Thorne after they stop him from raping the incarcerated but cooperative Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii. Cally pleads with Commander Adama to do something about the incident when Adama learns that Admiral Helena Cain intends to execute Tyrol and Helo. Adama dismisses her with quiet purpose ("You have work to do") as he prepares the battlestar to engage the militant admiral's command with his older Viper squadrons (Pegasus).

The standoff with Pegasus was averted when it was decided that attacking the large Cylon fleet they had detected should be their first priority, and Tyrol and Helo's executions were put on hold. Cally assisted the newly assigned Pegasus deck chief, Peter Laird, in readying all of Galactica's Vipers for the upcoming battle. After Commander Adama came down to the hangar deck to confer with Laird on the status of the preparations, Adama took Cally aside and questioned her about Laird. Cally revealed to Adama that Laird was a civilian, and that it was rumored that Pegasus had its own civilian refugee fleet in the past, but something happened to them. This prompted Adama to send Col. Tigh to Col. Jack Fisk to pump him for information about the civilian fleet that Admiral Cain had abandoned, sealing Adama's decision to try to eliminate Cain as a threat to his own civilian fleet (Resurrection Ship, Part I). Cally and Chief Tyrol would later discover that the Vipers' ammunition had been sabotaged by the Cylon-sympathizer Demand Peace movement (Epiphanies). Later, the two uncover a storage crate with a stowaway inside (The Captain's Hand).

Two weeks before the presidential election, Cally found Tyrol sleeping tumultuously on the hangar deck while it was empty. She woke him up while he was in the midst of a suicidal nightmare, and the delusional Tyrol proceeded to give Cally a savage beating, quickly pummeling her into a bloody mess and knocking her unconscious. After a moment Tyrol came to his senses, was shocked by what he had just done, and ran Cally to sickbay carrying her in his arms (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I).

Cally had to have her jaw wired shut, but she forgave Tyrol and said she always cared about him. Interestingly, her feelings for Tyrol were apparently known to Cavil prior to his exposure as a Cylon agent. (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I).

A year later on New Caprica, Cally is presumed married to Tyrol and pregnant with his child (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

Notes
*In the DVD commentary for "Bastille Day", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of Cally as the series progressed from the Miniseries through season 2:

:Eick: Nicki Clyne, who you see here playing Cally, was somebody who in the Miniseries, I remember Michael (Rymer) and I cast just on the basis of her look, 'cause we thought she was really cute, she kind of reminded us of a young Shelley Duvall. [...] she turned out to be so good that we— in launching the series we started talking about ways to involve her and I'm very proud of a moment coming up where she does something rather nasty, that...
:RDM: Well she almost died! She was gonna die in the intial drafts of this.
:Eick: That's right! He kills her! He rapes and kills her! And they're telling us we're too dark this year.
:RDM: Oh, I know. The second season is so much darker. And I don't think they even care. Yeah, Cally, Nicki, I hate to tell ya, but the bullseye was on Nicki here. And I can't even tell you why we decided it was, no I take that back I think it was your note; you said you wanted Cally to fight back and really show some balls in this scene. She bit his ear off...
:Eick: I said, "She bites his frakking ear off" and I was totally being...you know, just illustrative! I didn't really mean it!
:RDM: And I wrote, "she bites his ear off"!
:Eick: "And I got the draft, and she bites his ear off! I was like "that's great!"
:RDM: And from that moment on, I think, she really became part of the show. In a real sense, once she had gone through that and survived, and you know Tyrol and the gang come in and see her in the hospital at the end you kind of felt like she is one of the family.
:Eick: Yeah, and she's taken on, in season 2 actually, a much, much, much more prominent role. You have no idea how prominent a role.
:RDM: Which is really illustrative of the rise and fall of characters. I mean Boxey we thought going in was just going to be part of the show, and we just never really got our feet underneath us in terms of his storyline and really how it fit into it, and Cally who's just this 'other mechanic' at the beginning, who's just hanging around with Tyrol becomes a key element and part of the fabric of the show itself.
*In the DVD commentary for "Bastille Day", RDM revealed how he came up with names for deckhands Cally, Socinus, and Prosna: "They were all names I pulled out of an 'ancient names internet site'. I literally, I found something on the internet that would give me like 'ancient names', I went through it and found those names. It was like ancient Greek and Roman...somethings. They might be, for all I know they're names for utensils, or something like that..."
*The Mini-Series novelization gives her full name as "Jane Cally." Until this name is mentioned onscreen, its canonical value is debatable.

Overview
Following the end of the Cylon War, the Cylons withdrew from Colonial space to a planet of their own. For some 40 years, nothing was heard of them and apparently no attempt was made by the Colonials to keep an eye on them. The only contact expected between the two was at annual meetings at Armistice Station. However, while the Colonials sent a repesentative to the station every year, the Cylons did not (Mini-Series).

During their forty years of isolation, the Cylons developed or evolved a humanoid form that very closely mimics Human form, down to the cellular level.

Humano-Cylons have the capacity to emulate many of the same acts that humans do, including sex acts, as demonstrated by the Number 6 model. (Mini-Series)

Humano-Cylons can also be programmed to believe that they are human.

Like other Cylons, this model utilizes a synthetic, silicon brain that is susceptible to damage from certain types of radiation. Upon the death of the "body," a Humano-Cylon transfers its consciousness into another copy of itself, though this is limited by distance and perhaps signal integrity (hindered by interference). (Mini-Series, Flesh and Bone) Based on Caprica Sharon Valerii's conversation with Kara Thrace in the episode, The Farm, it appears that all humano-Cylons may share a collective knowledgebase of data from other active or deactivated humano-Cylons. Valerii spoke of a conversation between Kara and a captured Leoben Conoy copy in the fleet. This information would only be known to that now-dead Leoben copy if sharing were not possible. Kara Thrace's call sign, Starbuck, was also a likely bit of information gleaned from the collective knowledgebase that Simon knew of the Viper pilot, although Kara never told him of her call sign and used it to strike back at her abductors (The Farm). When under duress, the copy of Sharon Valerii on the Galactica was able to tell Gaius Baltar the number of remaining humano-Cylon agents in the fleet, information that would be impossible to gather without a collective knowledgebase (Resistance).

Some or all Cylon "female" models may have the capacity to bear children seeded by Human males. (33, Flesh and Bone, Hand of God. Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). The Cylons had been testing numerous methods of sexual reproduction yet all seemed to fail. Humano-Cylons cannot reproduce with each other biologically, and to try and get around this deficiency they have been trying to reproduce with humans to create hybrid offspring. "Farms" were set up apparently across all 12 Colonies where survivors, namely young fertile women of child-bearing age were rounded up, placed under heavy sedation and turned into "baby machines" through artificial insemination. However, so far this method has not met with success. Another drastically different approach was also considered; producing a child from a bond of love. It seems that Helo and Boomer's love-child is a lone success story in the relatively short history of Cylon sexual reproduction. ("The Farm")

Known Humano-Cylon Models
There are twelve models of Cylon (Mini-Series)*. Five have so far been identified as humano-Cylons.

Number Six
This model utilizes the human need / desire for sexual relations to her advantage. She is religious and monotheistic. She desires to know what it is to be alive.

Typically she is the alpha female, as demonstrated on multiple occasions. (Mini-Series, 33, Water, Six Degrees of Separation).

Copies of her have appeared under the names Shelly Godfrey and Gina.

Leoben Conoy
This model has shown to be religiously oriented, using dogma and intermixing truth with falsehoods. It was first discovered on Ragnar Station, claiming to be a scavenger / arms dealer. (Mini-Series)

He can be likened to the serpent of the Genesis tale in the Earth Christian Bible, taunting people with knowledge then watching as the negative consequences come into devastating fruition.

Aaron Doral
This model attempts to sow the seeds of discontent and endeavors to undermine authority that threatens his objectives. (Mini-Series) Doral-model tackles more of the behind-the-scenes issues, but at times takes it upon himself to execute certain tasks, such as becoming a suicide bomber. (Litmus)

Sharon Valerii
This model has shown naiveté in many matters. She is apparently not as religious as other Cylon models, but has demonstrated that she can love, unlike the Number Six model, and is capable of being impregnated by a human (Six Degrees of Separation, Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). She may be "defective", as the two personalities (Cylon and Human-programmed) of the sleeper-agent Sharon-copy on the Galactica have clashed multiple times (Water), and the fully aware Sharon on Caprica fully switched sides after falling in love with Helo and is now aiding the Colonials. (Flesh and Bone)

Simon
A model that Kara "Starbuck" Thrace encountered on Cylon-occupied Caprica posing as a doctor, who was actually involved with the Cylon hybridization program. Resembles a tall, somewhat thin middle-aged black man who speaks in a comforting strong voice. (The Farm)

Speculated Infiltrators
Ellen Tigh?
Ellen Tigh may or may not be a Cylon, but this has not been confirmed. However her actions, especially in the light of the attempt on Commander Adama's life ("Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II" through "Resistance") do call her character and motiviations into question. For someone who seems so intellegent and far-sighted she should be well aware that pushing her husband to strong-arm the rest of the fleet to conform with his (and her) views would only end in chaos. If she is a Cylon looking to destroy the fleet from within, then the best weapon in her arsenal is the man she's married to. Information from RDM indicates that, at the start of season 2, there are eight Cylon operatives that appear in the fleet, so the possibillity is still open.

Gaius Baltar?
Gaius Baltar's ability to see and communicate with a virtual Number Six was initially attributed to some kind of device implanted in his body. However, after tests performned on him by Dr. Cottle (Home, Part II), no devices were found, that the device that the Cylons used was organic in nature (undistinguishable from other tissue), or that Baltar is inorganic in origin, that is, a Humano-Cylon. How did Baltar survive the outer shockwave of a nuclear blast near his home on Caprica, shielded only by Six's body, which is just as frail as a human's? Is the Baltar we see in fact, a copy? See the Gaius Baltar page for arguments for and against this possibility.

William Adama?
In Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down, Commander Adama disappears mysteriously and returns with Ellen Tigh. Around the same time, a Cylon Raider shows up. However, this was all explained later in the same episode, when Adama reveals that he was reluctant to openly announce Ellen's sudden appearance because he was afraid she could be a Cylon. Adama also has exhibited strange behavior, from expressing vague Cylon sympathies (both in his speech in the miniseries and in his discussion with Tyrol in Home, Part I where he seems to concede that Boomer was more than a machine). While not openly friendly to the Cylons, Adama seems to at least respect them as persons.

Lt. Gaeta?
Gaeta is in a good position for a Cylon—not conspicuous but nonetheless in a position where he can help the Cylons quite a bit. Gaeta is very good at plotting jumps, can recognize Cylon devices, is close to Dr. Baltar, plotted coordinates to a water planet, a Cylon tyllium base, and Kobol, "forgot" to send updated coordinates to the fleet in Scattered leaving them vulnerable to Cylon electronic attack after needing to network the computer systems together, and committed other small actions that make him seem suspicious in the eyes of the fans.

Jammer?
Jammer has exibited suspicious actions numerous times. Along with Cally and Socinus, he serves under Chief Tyrol on the flight deck. Jammer consistently makes remarks that seem to be trying to divide the humans against each other. When it was revealed to the Fleet that Cylons now can look like humans in "Litmus", he kept arguing that everyone should stop trusting each other and that it was "every man for himself now", while Socinus said that if they didn't trust each other they wouldn't survive. Cally even pointed out that Jammer's kind of thinking is exactly what the Cylons want: for everyone to become suspicious and paranoid. Jammer keeps doing this through the second season: when Tyrol is accused of being a Cylon in "Resistance" he immedieately yells at Cally that the Chief must be a Cylon. Whenever Jammer appears he seems to be trying to sow mistrust among the crew. Also, he told the emotionally unstable Cally that she should be angry at Galactica-Boomer, not himself, for Tyrol being suspected, and that she should take it up with Boomer; thus Jammer can be seen as having manipulated Cally into killing Boomer (Cally need not be a Cylon; Jammer could tell she was suffering from post-traumatic stress after Kobol and that she would go after Boomer if he suggseted it to her).

One of the biggest pieces of evidence against Jammer is that when the Galactica was boarded by Cylon Cenuturions in "Valley of Darkness", Apollo and his group of marines found him hiding in a small arms locker, completely unharmed, even though the room was littered with the corpses of crewmen the Cylons had killed. He claimed to have just hid then snuck inside, but perhaps he was already there and the Centurions spared him because they knew he was a Cylon as well. (Dualla was also found alive in a room filled with dead crewmen, but she was just in the head (lavatory), which isn't a vital area of the ship, whil Jammer was in a small arms locker. Further, Dualla was wounded; she had a light concussion and presumably a Centurion knocked her unconscious, assumed she was dead, and moved on. Jammer was just standing around inside of the weapons locker).

Complaints and Concerns
I hate the spoiler policy. I don't want to be spoiled. I won't be using or contributing to the site significantly until after the end of the season and before you start spoiling season 3.

Character summaries in particular should be free of spoilers like "died in tbe episode Scattered," (before it aired), especially when the character doesn't die in Scattered after all when it finally airs.

Socinus lives!

-MHall

: I personally go by group consensus. If the consensus is that spoiler information is used, then that's the consensus; if it is vice-versa, then spoiler information isn't used (or packaged so as not to spoil the casual reader). As we're an information resource and episode guide, spoilers are a necessary evil. Some of the spoiler information changes from script to shooting, hence the inaccurate statement of Socinus' death in "Scattered"; it doesn't preclude him dying later on due to his injuries, so he may still die this season.

: For instance, I noted that details often change from the initial script to the final shooting. Permit me to use Boomer as an example: her being a human Cylon was never in the previous versions of the mini-series script, but changed -- indirectly -- after one of Ron Moore's friends made a quip about there not being a "By your command" line in the script. (That information came from the mini-series DVD commentary track.) -- Joe Beaudoin 09:41, 17 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Actually, I think that there is no way of making a spoiler-free version for everybody and making it work, too - because some country will always be the last to air the show, and by then, parts of the rest of the world will have forgotten about it already.

There is however one exception: There should really be no spoilers for shows that have not even aired, or at least not anywhere but that episode's summary. Otherwise, there is really no way one can enjoy this wiki and the show. (Happened for me with Home II.) I would even go as far as extending the no-spoilers for not-yet-aired shows for 24 hrs after the show, again, with the exception of the episodes's page. Because, let's fact it, lots of people will use P2P to see the show, because otherwise it would be years until they get to see it. (And if they are unlucky, they would have to see a synchronised version, too.) So the latter suggestion would enable them to look up things here while not having to wait for the show to arrive.

And one final thing: Spoiling from the scripts does not even make much sense - as the first poster on this page points out; and the audio comments imply the same. So my guess would be that spoiling not-yet aired shows will put off users from using this site, which is hardly a good thing, and it doesn't make much sense in the first place to do so, because the scripts will not air the way they were written, anyway. So I really would suggest a <u> No spoilers for unaired shows</u> policy. -- Still not king 12:32, 28 August 2005 (EDT)
::I agree. We gain very little by jumping the gun on upcoming episode spoilers - for example, I didn't need to know that spoileriffic note on the episode summary for Resurrection Ship at all. There's no reason not to be patient with these things. I do not agree, however, with a 24 hour injunction against posting episode details - we should be able to start wiki-ing as soon as it airs in our respective timezones. If we want to stay spoiler free on the west coast, we can always just not log on during the three hour window. Likewise, when the brits start getting Season 2, Part II before we do, we shouldn't force ourselves to wait for the U.S. airings. --Peter Farago 12:45, 28 August 2005 (EDT)
:::I was intentionally proposing just 24 hours - that is what it might take to get to see the show if you have to get it by P2P, and in the meantime, one might still want to check out something -- not the episode summary, of course, but a plain page about a character. It's a minor part of my proposal, though -- the important one is No spoilers of unaired shows. -- Still not king 20:13, 28 August 2005 (EDT)
::::I really like the idea of not posting regarding unaired shows. There's no way to avoid spoilers for shows that have aired already, but the show doesn't really exist until it's aired, in a way (insofar that it might be changed). I also really like the idea of a 24-hour wait period after the first (and thus, British, right?) air time. A day isn't that long, really, and I'm not sure about anyone else, but these episodes make my mind race and I'd probably be too excited if I went straight from the sofa to the computer after watching. --Day 14:35, 29 August 2005 (EDT)
:This is rediculous. You come onto a site that has a quite obvious spoiler policy on the front fage, you go to read about upcoming episodes, and then you cry about being spoiled. :The whole debate is a bit odd to me. "Spoilers" by definition have to do with un-aired episodes, and anything written about un-aired episodes is, by definition, speculation. That speculation may be more informed or less, but it's still just that, speculation. You have to watch the episode to find out what actually happens. If anything maybe there should be a reminder on un-aired ep pages that the information may or may not be accurate. Back in the day, there was another sci-fi show, "Babylon 5" which had/has a website much like this one - "The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5." The Lurker's Guide, while being an accurate and detailed guide to the show, was also a haven for every kind of spoilage and speculation imaginable, which I and many others found only enhanced our enjoyment of the show. --Astarte 05:22, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

How about episode pages that have not been aired yet get a spoiler tag, so that people that can contribute to them knowing full well that they'll likely be spoiled? Same can be done with character and event pages, so that information introduced to them from episodes not yet aired can also be used on this Wiki without fear of spoiling those that do not wish it. I found this problem with the Pegasus ep and related data. I wanted to keep the Fall of the Twelve Colonies page accurate with what we knew about surviving Battlestars, but this is still a spoiler, so the data there is left a bit vague unless someone digs for it. Still, a spoiler is a spoiler. The talk page would satisfy both spoiler-hunter and seeker on an episode article. We'd just need to add a "Spoiler" topic there, and note to people that if you are going to see an episode page for a show that hasn't aired, you are asking for it, literally. At least the talk page has an extra layer for avoiders to have, but because of the nature of this wiki, eliminating spoilers takes away a lot of the research fun. Data's gotta go somewhere and we can't commit the juicy bits for the main page to memory until the ep is aired. Spencerian 12:40, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
:::I dislike the thought of having to move massive amounts of text. So far, I've been avoiding pages to do with unaired episodes. That's easy enough. My main concern is someone clicking through and wondering, "Who the heck is Gina?", thinking it's some pilot who's name they missed or some small character. Then they read about an episode they didn't want to. Or, in another case, someone reading all about Lee and the information going on, at the end, past the most recent episode. I think keeping character pages clear is the better idea. --Day 17:01, 1 September 2005 (EDT)

How about comitting spoilers to a subpage of an article? For instance, Pegasus (episode) would have a subpage called Pegasus (episode)/Spoilers? I believe that would be fairly straight forward, given the title of the subpage. :-)

Then, after the episode airs, we can simply merge the contents together from the spoiler page into the main page of the article in question. Just my view. -- Joe Beaudoin 12:48, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
What is a spoiler?
In response to Day's query below ("So what constitutes a spoiler for this new voting catagory?"): I believe a spoiler is anything from an as-yet-unaired show. Examples: Lucy Lawless's character, Cain, Gina, etc. I think the revelation about Boomer is fair game, as that was the end of the Mini-Series. It's hard to escape that fact when most press articles now refer to her as a Cylon. For the purposes of my argument and vote, a "spoiler" is any information that has not yet been broadcast. Is that a fair assessment? -- ryq 16:40, 1 September 2005 (EDT)
:I concur with this definition. I just thought it would pay to be absolutely clear. --Day 16:56, 1 September 2005 (EDT)

:What about various countries using this page? What an Australian considers a spoiler may already be known via broadcast in the states. Using this logic, spoiler pages could end up lasting for literally months after an original broadcast. --Adedward 16:15, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

:: Which is a problem with a "no spoiler" spoiler policy... Different countries see episodes at different times. Fact of the matter remains that there will always be spoilers within the wiki, so there will always be an "all spoilers permitted" policy -- in that way. The current discussion, however, is more towards spoiling episodes that haven't aired anywhere. -- Joe Beaudoin 18:37, 3 September 2005 (EDT)

::: Precisely. Once an episode has aired for the first time somewhere, then it can be said what's really in it. Before it's aired anywhere, stuff "known" about it can change and so could very well be disinformation. Also, regardless of what the MPAA (or whatever the acronym is) wants, once an episode airs in one place, it is very soon available via download on the internet. I don't think this site should condone such downloading, but it's a reality and, as I understand it, Australia is the leader in downloading TV programs. There's also some behavioral patterns that indicate that the SciFi Channel and SkyOne and the peroduction staff might very well be tacitly embracing this method of dissemination with the idea that it actually raises viewership numbers when the things air for the first time in an area. They've, of course, not made any official statement.

::: All that being said, I think the first air date, whether that's in the UK, the US, Australlia or Kamchatka, should be that date after which comprehensive information about an episode should no longer be considered a spoiler with respect to character pages. Episode pages are, really, a finer-grained debate. --Day 15:15, 6 September 2005 (EDT)

::: I concur with Day in that I believe nothing is canon until a) the episode is legitimately broadcast anywhere, or b) TPTB declare some aspect of the show as canon. It has been proven that scenes or characters or plots are moved, re-written or deleted between the page and the screen. I'm concerned that some "spoilers" (ie, rumours, hear-say, etc) may reflect poorly on this wiki, and therefore spoilers should be left out of the main article (and on the Talk page) unless and until they are proven correct. For example, I do not disagree with Lucy Lawless' character having an article at this time (we know she was part of the cast), but I believe what her character says and does, and what plots involve her, should be kept on the Talk page until they are broadcast. On a related note, I am amazed at all the info you guys find about unaired shows. :) -- ryq 16:08, 6 September 2005 (EDT)

Jump limits are most likely the result of a combination of factors including:

* The power available to a vessel to maintain a stable wormhole
* Local graviational forces (such as nearby planets, etc.) which must be compensated for at either end of the jump
* The overall mass of the vessel itself
* The accuracy and detail of data concerning the emergence zone at the far end of the jump.

The Red Line would appear to be defined within the overall safe operational tolerancies of Colonial FTL technology, given that it can be exceeded if required.
The Red Line may also refer to an imaginary line drawn around all space that the colonials had charted.

Ryq: define "spoiler" for this wiki?

:::::One of the nice things about the wiki system is that if you post something innacurate or overzealous, someone else can come along and tone it down a bit. I'm starting a vote. --Peter Farago 15:03, 29 August 2005 (EDT)

:This is rediculous. You come onto a site that has a quite obvious spoiler policy on the front fage, you go to read about upcoming episodes, and then you cry about being spoiled. Gee, obviously the best way to solve this is to stop people from posting new information. Kuralyov 08:51, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
Spoiler Warning
How about episode pages that have not been aired yet get a spoiler tag, so that people that can contribute to them knowing full well that they'll likely be spoiled? Same can be done with character and event pages, so that information introduced to them from episodes not yet aired can also be used on this Wiki without fear of spoiling those that do not wish it. Thoughts?-- Joe Beaudoin 09:39, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:I'm afraid it wouldn't do me much good, since I read the diffs on everything on the recent edits page anyway. Maybe we could allow spoilers on episode summary pages but discourage them elsewhere? Avoiding the episode summaries isn't very hard. --Peter Farago 12:11, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

::This is going to be awkward, but I feel like we should add this as an option in the vote. Also adding a note on approval voting. --Peter Farago 12:53, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

Subpage?
How about comitting spoilers to a subpage of an article? For instance, Pegasus (episode) would have a subpage called Pegasus (episode)/Spoilers? I believe that would be fairly straight forward, given the title of the subpage. :-)

Then, after the episode airs, we can simply merge the contents together from the spoiler page into the main page of the article in question. Just my view. -- Joe Beaudoin 12:48, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:This sounds like a lot of work. I actually agree with Spencerian that anyone who clicks on the episode page for an unaired episode is explicitly asking for it. Additionally, those are easy edits to avoid reading. I'm going to go and complicate things now... --Peter Farago 12:53, 31 August 2005 (EDT)

:: It does, but my intent was to just throw this out there to see what everyone else thought. -- Joe Beaudoin 13:01, 31 August 2005 (EDT)
Vote for as many options as you agree with. Voting method is approval voting - place your name under every policy which would be acceptable to you; the policy acceptable to the most users wins.
Kate Vernon was born in Canada, one of two daughters to character actor John Vernon and former actress and model Nancy West. Kate's sister is the singer Nan Vernon.

Following her family's move to California, Kate expressed an interest in becoming an architect on graduating from school, but then felt she'd have to be locked away if she failed to express herself as an actress. Despite her father's opposition, she followed her heart and started acting in her early 20's, working in both film and television.

She worked steadily on television through the 1980s and 1990s, guest-starring in some of the top shows of the era: LA Law, Murder, She Wrote, Nash Bridges - even foraying into science-fiction with her appearance in Star Trek:Voyager.

Her film career spans both the screen screen and a range of made-for-TV movies featuring the likes of Perry Mason.

IMDB Entry

"Leoben Conoy"

Callum Keith Rennie was born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear in the North-east of England in 1960. However, he was raised and educated in Canada after his family emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta when he was four years old. Graduating from Strathcona High School, he had intended to go to college, but instead took his student loan (some $5,000) and purchased a truck and went fishing.

Following this, he sought work as a moutaineer, supporting this goal by taking on a wide range of manual labour ranging from cooking through to laying railway track. His inital adult brush with acting came when he took a job doing voice work at CJSR, the University of Alberta's campus radio station. This lead to 12 months of steady work writing and producing, including producing a play at a local theatre, which in turn lead to him appearing on stage in "American Buffalo".

Following this, he tried his luck as an actor in Vancouver, without success; problems with drug dealing followed and hes was reduced to a string of low-paying jobs before he moved to Toronto and enrolled in the Bruhanski Theatre Studio. While studying, he appeared on stage in "Lost Souls and Missing Persons", and as a result was offered work at the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Again, things did not work out. After a season at the festival, he returned to Vancouver where he started work on another play, but never completed it. There then followed a 10-year relationship with alcohol which only ended in 1993, when his left eye was damaged in a barroom brawl.

Following this incident, Rennie put his house in order, stopped drinking and concentraded on his film career. A host of critically-acclaimed films followed. These Included the "mockumentary" "Hard Core Logo" about a rock band on the road to ruin. despite his apprehension in taking on the role of Billy Tallant in the film, Rennie came away from it not only with critical plaudits, but also with a love of rock music fused with his upbringing on punk rock. He remains friendly with the lead singer of "The Headstones," Hugh Dillon, who played the lead singer of the punk rock band in "Hard Core Logo."

He also had a string of guest-starring roles in the major genre television series of the 1990s: The X-Files, Highlander, The Commish, Outer Limits, Forever Night, as well as a starring role in the children's television series, My Life and a Dog.

However, it was 1997 that brought Rennie to the attention of the international television audience, when he took over from David Marciano in the hit comedy / drama series Due South. The role came about after Marciano declined to continue in the role of Dectective Ray Vecchio, and Rennie was given a unique one-year contract as Dectective Stanley Kowalski, who was "covering" for the Vecchio character, who was supposedly deep undercover. The one-year contract meant Rennie could avoid being tied-into a long-running television series, something that he preferred not to do, having already turned down the semi-regular role of Alex Krychek in the X-Files.

Following the end of Due South, Rennie returned to theatrical films, taking supporting roles in a wide range of films, as well as guest-starring in TV series such as The DaVinci Inquest (recurring role as "Bob Marlowe" over 5 episodes), Mutant X, Dark Angel and Tru Calling.

Rennie is currently single, and lives with his dog, Alberta and cat, Cleek. He enjoys playing golf and also paints (and has sold a number of his works).

"Commander William Adama"

Edward James Olmos was born February 24, 1947, in East Los Angeles, Calif., and raised in the Boyle Heights neighbourhood. He played baseball as a way to avoid street gangs and drugs, and became the Golden State batting champion. Turning to rock music in his teens, he became lead singer in a band he named Pacific Ocean (because it was "the biggest thing on the West Coast"), which released a record in 1968. Around this time he was attending East Los Angeles College and California State University, performing in clubs, and studying acting.

He married Kaija Keel, daughter of actor Howard Keel, in 1971, having two sons by her: Mico and Bodie. At this time, he started working as a jobbing actor, working in theatre and television (in which he appeared in such iconic television series as Hawaii Five-O, Canon, Police Woman, Kojak and Starsky and Hutch) for a number of years until his mesmerising performance in the dramatic musical Zoot Suit (1978) led to a Tony Award nomination, a Los Angeles Drama Circle Award and a Theatre World award.

As a result of this recognition, he recreated the role for the film of the musical, thus kick-starting his film career; later that year he starred in Wolfen. This success was quickly followed-up with the acclaimed historical drama The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez and Ridley Scott's landmark Blade Runner.

Following this, he took on the role of Lt. Martin Castillo in the 1980's hit TV series Miami Vice. During his 5-year tenure on the series, the role earned Olmos an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award, plus an additional nomination each.

In 1989 Olmos received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Jaime Escalante, the dedicated, real-life math teacher of Stand and Deliver, and in 1992 he made his directorial debut with the powerful feature film American Me, in which he also starred. In that year he also divorced his first wife, Kaija Keel, after 21 years of marriage.
