== Overview ==
:''[[Kara Thrace]]'s past comes back to haunt her when [[William Adama|Adama]] has doubts about her fitness for duty.''

== Summary ==

===Teaser===

*[[Kara Thrace]] is dreaming of her old apartment, trying to paint over the [[Eye of Jupiter|strange mandala]]. The dream is augmented when a [[Leoben Conoy]] comes behind her, and the two embrace and begin to have sex, rolling through the white paint that Thrace attempted to use to cover up the mandala. The mandala "pushes" itself through the white paint to reveal itself.
*[[Hot Dog]] looks over to question what Thrace was dreaming in her bunk.
*Thrace meets [[Helo]] in the head. He notes that [[Hera Agathon]] wakes up from frightening dreams as well. Helo suggests a psychologist, but when Thrace declines, he also suggests an [[oracle]] living in [[Dogsville]]. As Helo speaks, Thrace see in her mirror an image of a little girl standing by the hatchway, who appears bruised and beaten. When Thrace looks again for the child, she has disappeared.
*Thrace enters the oracle's tent and finds a small golden figurine of the angelic [[Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn]].
*The oracle, [[Yolanda Brenn]], appears, and tells Thrace to keep the figurine. She asks Thrace to sit before a pool of water. Brenn holds Thrace's hand and begins a reading.
*Brenn knows of the Cylon [[Leoben]] and the dreams. When she repeats the destiny foretold by Leoben, verbatim, Thrace is angered. The oracle continues to repeat Leoben's words which were originally spoken under interrogation ([[Flesh and Bone]]).
*Thrace wonders how the oracle could know what was said. The oracle tells her that her mother, [[Socrata Thrace]], was trying to tell her something.
*The oracle notes that Leoben is the answer, who can see the answers to Thrace. Thrace angrily leaves the tent.

===Act 1===

*[[The Fleet (RDM)|The Fleet]] is orbiting a cloudy gas giant planet as they refuel various ships after the fuel crisis had passed ([[Dirty Hands]])
*[[Samuel Anders]], after the two had a lovemaking session, is asking Thrace to join him for some leave time on another ship.
*He complains that the oracle wasn't helpful, and neither was her mother.
*Thrace notes how the two fought, and the injuries she sustained. Thrace recounts her mothers fear of insects, a holdover from the first Cylon war.
*To get revenge on her mother, Thrace placed rubber ants in her mother's closet, causing her to have a panic attack as she furiously tries to stamp the rubber bugs to death. In retaliation, her mother placed her hand in a door jamb and slammed the door on it, breaking Thrace's hand. Thrace states that it "was worth it".
*During a refueling operation, Starbuck and [[Hot Dog]] are on [[CAP]] when she believes she sees an enemy.
*''[[Galactica]]'' can't see the contact, but Starbuck identifies it as a [[Heavy Raider]].
*As Starbuck goes closer, she sees a storm system that looks remarkably like the mandala. The Raider flies close and, to Starbuck, appears to strike her fighter.
*Starbuck keeps descending into the storm, against [[Lee Adama|Apollo]]'s continuous attempts to warn her back up.
*Eventually, Starbuck struggles successfully to return to space, but not after, during the descent, she sees flashes of sights of an apartment with her mother standing there.

===Act 2===
*Starbuck is back aboard, but as [[Galen Tyrol]] and his deck crew inspect her Viper for damage, there is none.
*Starbuck's gun camera shows nothing, as several pilots including [[Sharon Agathon]], [[Lee Adama]], and [[Racetrack]] review it. They don't see Starbuck firing at anything but clouds.
*Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] speaks with his son and questions Thrace's competency. The admiral believes she is close to burnout, but the younger Adama believes her "steely-eyed Viper jock" mentality is all that holds Thrace together. The admiral repeats the question: Can she handle the strain?
*Lee Adama and Thrace are standing in the [[memorial hallway]]. Starbuck asks Major Adama to place her photo next to [[Kat]] if she meets her end before him. Likewise, Adama asks to have his photo next to [[Duck]] and his sweetheart, [[Nora]], both lost on [[New Caprica]] ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance]]).
*Thrace asks what Lee and Admiral Adama think of her flight readiness. Major Adama tries to give her encouragement but Thrace is distracted by a wax dripping that looks like the mandala.
*Thrace passes by the Admiral and President [[Laura Roslin]] without noticing them when Adama greets her with an [[Nothing but the rain|old tag line]] they shared before the new Cylon War ([[Miniseries]]). Before moving on, Thrace gives him the Aurora figurine from the oracle's tent as a masthead for his sailing ship models.
*As Thrace goes through inspection of her Viper, she again sees a little girl, this time in her cockpit--Thrace as a girl. Her face is bruised and bleeding. Thrace has flashbacks of her mother and is shocked into stopping her inspection.

===Act 3===
*A visibly shaken Thrace sits by her Viper when Lee Adama goes back to check on her.
*Thrace says she is not going back out to fly, not trusting herself. Adama volunteers to be her wingman to give her confidence.
*Thrace asks about [[Anastasia Dualla|Adama's wife]] and how their relationship was going. After a moment of discomfort after he notes things are going well, Thrace tells him that she is happy that things are working out. Thrace says that, as it was in the beginning, the two are back to being platonic.
*During Apollo and Starbuck's CAP, Starbuck sees another bogey and engages, but no one can confirm it on [[DRADIS]] again.
*Admiral Adama chooses caution and orders the Fleet to [[Action Stations|Condition One]] status, stopping refueling once more.
*Apollo is again trying to flag down Starbuck, but she is entranced once more and again flying downward in the clouds.
*Starbuck's Viper is hit by debris. Her forward canopy window is punctured, she is knocked unconscious, and her fighter begins to tumble. An alarm sounds in the cockpit, and the scene blurs to find a sleeping Thrace shutting off a radio alarm and awaking in her apartment, with a Leoben greeting her.
*Thrace believes she is being tricked again, unconscious or on a Cylon ship, but Leoben states otherwise.
*Leoben keeps noting how the mandala shape cloud attracts her, and that she has told anyone little about it.
*Leoben tells her of her tendency to cheat death ever since a day with her mother as they materialize to a small apartment, reliving an event six years ago, where Lieutenant Thrace stands before her mother as she reads a letter from a veterans administration. On the wall is a [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]] medal of honor, ostensibly from the first [[Cylon War]].
*[[Socrata Thrace]] first congratulates her daughter for being the first of her family to become an officer, then berates her for being only 16th in her class and having many demerits.
*Kara Thrace retaliates by discussing her mother never reaching officer status despite serving in the Cylon War.
*The lieutenant sees a doctor's report that tells that her mother has cancer that has spread rapidly.
*Socrata rejects any attempts of her daughter's sympathy, and Kara Thrace runs out the door, vowing never to return. The "real-world" Starbuck begins to cry as she relives the moment.
*Socrata Thrace stares at a filled dish of cigarette butts.

===Act 4===
*The scene shifts. Leoben tells Thrace how her mother waited at her apartment and died five weeks later.
*When Thrace tells her reluctance to return, Leoben presents her with another image, where she is able to walk to her mother's deathbed, Socata has a scrapbook of every doodle and letter that Thrace made, including one with the mandala.
*Thrace tells her mother that something is about to happen, the thing that her mother was preparing her for. Socrata tells her daughter that she is ready as she holds her mother's hand. As she presses Socrata's hand to her face, her mother takes her last breath. Starbuck cries and then smiles at being able to be there to hear her mother's final words.
*Leoben tells her that death is not hard to embrace, that this was the lesson her mother was trying to teach her daughter.
*When Thrace realizes that Leoben is not actually a Leoben. When asked, he replies that he never claimed to be - he is there to be her guide to see what lies "between life and death."
*The scene shifts back to the cloud where Starbuck fails to climb. She reawakens, but continues to drop and chase the Raider image. The planetary cloud boundary, the point of no-return, also called the "hard deck", is getting closer, upon which the air pressure would crush the Viper.
*Apollo finds Starbuck in her dive, and briefly sees the heavy raider.
*Starbuck finally calls out to Apollo: "Lee, I'll see you on the other side." As Apollo frantically calls her to wave off, she repeats, in a whisper, "Just let me go."
*Starbuck sees a vision of white light in her cockpit, and she smiles. Viewers also see an image of herself as a young girl in the same white light.
*A view from the tail of Apollo's Viper clearly shows the Raider, then Starbuck's Viper appears, chasing it. The bogey vanishes into the clouds, and the view cuts to Apollo, looking straight forwarding, declaring "Visual!"
*Shortly after Apollo gains visual of Starbuck, her Viper explodes. There is no ejection or rescue chute.
*Apollo reports the grim news to [[CIC]]. Everyone, from [[Saul Tigh]] to [[Gaeta]] to Admiral Adama, is visibly heartbroken.
*William Adama tries to work on his sailing ship model, with the Aurora figurine now attached, which fits perfectly. But his anger and grief over the loss of Kara Thrace leads him to destroy the model and begin to cry heavily.

==Bonus Scene==
*The scene begins shortly before Act 3, where, as Starbuck inspects her Viper, she finds hydraulic fluid, and becomes visibly angry at Chief Tyrol. Major Adama moves in to attempt to calm her down.

== Questions ==
* Will Anders blame Apollo for the loss of Starbuck once the news of her death reaches him?
* Who is the being that was Starbuck's "spiritual" guide during her dream? Is he somehow connected to the makers of the mandala in the Temple of Five?
* Is the cockpit truly damaged from space debris, or is it imagined just as the supposed damage that Starbuck initially believed happened at the first encounter with the Raider?
* Is Starbuck in the cockpit of the Viper as it explodes?
* Is the Heavy Raider real or a hallucination?
* Did Apollo see the Heavy Raider, as indicated by this [http://www.templetons.com/images/leeview2.jpg point-of-view] shot?
* If the Heavy Raider was real, why would the Cylons not include a fighter escort or other ships within the vicinity?
* Will Helo experience any form of guilt or regret for showing the picture of the mandala to Starbuck?
* What did Starbuck mean when she told Lee: "See you on the other side."?
* Who will take Starbuck's place as ''Galactica's'' Viper ace?
* Will Starbuck's death have any lasting effect on Dualla's marriage?
* Considering the white light that appears to shine into Starbuck's cockpit and what the Leoben-figure mentioned about showing her what lies between life and death, is it possible that she is experiencing the same event that [[Number Three]] had on several occasions ("[[Hero]]", "[[Rapture]]")?
* Is Starbuck's Leoben-figure in any way related to [[Baltar]]'s internal [[Six]]?
* Is the placement of Starbuck's Aurora figurine on Adama's model ship symbolic to Starbuck, in some way, guiding the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] on their path to Earth?
* Based on what the oracle says, is it possible that the real Leoben model knows something about what may have happened during Starbuck's death?

== Analysis ==

* Although Starbuck is contemplating to eject from her damaged Viper, the planet is a gas giant and doesn't have a solid surface. Although in a dense atmosphere one could possibly parachute for hours and the human body is more resistant to high pressures than metal and glass constructions, her helmet would likely be crushed. Thus, unless she were picked up quickly by a rescue craft or the heavy raider (if it does indeed exist), her survival would be doubtful.
* The episode brings many story elements of Starbuck's history to a close as everything comes to a full circle, which is a general meaning of a mandala in spiritual contexts. A few of these elements include:
** Admiral Adama and Thrace's interchange of "What do you hear? - [[Nothing but the rain]]". This is first scene that introduced Kara and her overall relationship with Adama at the beginning of the [[Miniseries]].
** The scene between Apollo and Starbuck where she states that they've reached full circle as she is again the hotshot pilot who gives nothing but grief to her CAG.
** Admiral Adama's proposed rescue of her is similar to his actions in "[[You Can't Go Home Again]]" when Thrace's Viper goes down over a hostile moon. However, this time, Lee dissuades his father from the attempt because of the futility of looking for Starbuck's destroyed Viper within a gas giant.
**Kara's initial reaction and eventual denial to pull the ejection handle illustrated the completion of her endless cycle of fleeing death, which she now embraced with joy.
** Her continued hostility and bitterness towards her mother finally reaches its close as Thrace is finally able to witness her mother's death and hear her final words.
** The final moment before Thace's Viper explodes, an image of a younger Thrace being engulfed in light could either be symbolism or an event that represents Thrace's return to her childhood innocence.
** Her hostility towards Leoben comes to a close as she comes to welcome the help and guidance of her "Leoben" guide.

*It should be noted that the Leoben in her vision is ''not'' a Cylon, but an unidentified manifestation. Kara says "You're not Leoben, are you?" and the manifestation replies "I never said I was." What this aspect of Kara's vision means remains unknown.

* Thrace's death can be seen as the close of her origin desire to die during the episode "[[Scar]]". However, here she is ready to embrace death and see a new beginning with it, while in "[[Scar]]" her original desire is fuel over despair of her belief that Anders was dead on Caprica. Both episode plots are motivated by a mysterious Cylon pilot.

* Admiral Adama is shown in the middle of building his model ship after the failed assassination attempt and the division of the Fleet ([[Home, Part I]]). The ship is finally completed at the moment of Adama coming to grips with his grief of Thrace's death. In reaction, the ship that was begun during a period of great personal turmoil within Adama is destroyed in the midst of another episode of intense grief and anger.

* Even though Lee Adama and Thrace decided to forge on with their marriages, it is Adama who has found contentment with Dualla while Thrace remained in turmoil with Anders. The scene after another love making session indicates that their relationship hadn't improved much since "[[Taking a Break from All Your Worries]]".

* The figurine that Thrace gives to Adama is an idol of the goddess Aurora, the goddess of the dawn and gentle breeze. The relationship between this goddess and Thrace seems to be highlighted prior to her Viper's explosion as she apparently is engulfed in light and wind within her cockpit.

* The connection and parallels between Major Adama and Thrace are furthered strengthened during Socrata Thrace's death scene. When Thrace confesses to her mother about her fear of taking the next step towards her destiny, her mother remarks that she knows that her daughter can meet the task. When asked how she knows this, her response is almost word for word exactly what William Adama said to his son in "[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]": "'You are my daughter (son).'" Thus, similar to Adama's son, Thrace is finally able to bury the hatchet with her mother.

* The "Leoben" guide explains that his role is to help Thrace take the next step to the place between life and death. Interestingly, this is the type of "location" that the model [[Number Three|D'Anna]] describes in "[[Hero]]" when she begins her suicide/resurrection chamber sessions in order to discover who the [[Final Five]] were.

== Notes ==
*Katee Sackhoff had to sign a confidentiality agreement relating to what happened to her character in this episode.
*Adama can be seen building his model ship in "[[Home, Part I]]".
* The introduction of the goddess Aurora increases the number of known gods within the Colonial religion. As before with the use of names such as Mars and Jupiter, Aurora is the romanized name for the Greek goddess Eos.
* An aurora is a radiant emission from a planet's upper atmosphere that occurs sporadically over the middle and high latitudes of both hemispheres in the form of luminous bands, thus forming the pattern of the mandala that Kara sees in her first flight over the planet.

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==
''[[Kara Thrace]] sees [[Socrata Thrace]] die in a vision guided by [[Leoben Conoy]]:''
:'''Thrace''': "Mama, something's about to happen, you know that thing you were trying to prepare me for, I don't know if I can do it."
:'''Socrata''': "Oh yes you can, Kara."
:'''Thrace''': "How can you be sure?"
:'''Socrata''': "You're my daughter."
:'''Leoben''': "See there's nothing terrible about death, when you finally face it, it's beautiful. You're free now, to become who you really are."
:'''Thrace''': "You're not Leoben, are you?."
:'''Leoben''': "I never said I was. I'm here to prepare you to pass through the next door, to discover what happens in the space between life and death."

== Official Statements ==

Information from the [[Podcast:Maelstrom|podcast]]:

*The original script had Kara do three trips to the gas giant. It is during the second trip that she sees the Heavy Raider again, but panics and fakes a hydraulics problem with her Viper, which allows her to return to ''Galactica''. This was the original reason, not the lack of visual evidence of a Heavy Raider, that Lee and Adama had their conversation about her competency as a pilot.

*The model ship Adama was building over the course of the series was a very expensive rental prop which [[Edward James Olmos]] destroyed in an ad-lib expression of Adama's grief over the loss of Starbuck, much to the props crew's dismay as the model was worthed in the range of the $100,000s. Thankfully, the ship was insured.

*The original script was meant to be a payoff for the end of "[[Rapture]]" when Helo showed Thrace the mandala. It was supposed to have Thrace face her fear of death and resist its call, while at the same time the overall payoff would be somehow linked to furthering the Fleet's voyage to Earth. After several iterations of the script, [[Ronald D. Moore|RDM]] and company decided to go down the dangerous avenue of killing off one of the major characters.

*The original script had an interior scene of the Heavy Raider as the first place that Kara would wake up from after she is knocked unconscious. There she would find Leoben using a device that would delve into her memories. At the time, however, RDM didn't know if it was possible if the show could revisit Thrace's apartment. Once that possibility was available, the interior of the Heavy Raider was abandoned because of cost and storyline suitability.

*The last scene between Adama and Thrace was originally to have ended on a more sour note. Thrace was supposed to be in a meeting between Adama, Lee, and Roslin, upon which Thrace noted out loud the possible romantic undertones between Adama and Roslin. Afterwards, Adama would dress Thrace down and those would have been his last words to her before her death. The director argued with RDM about cutting this scene out and eventually RDM gave way to allow a more comforting departure between the two characters.

*According to Moore, "Maelstrom" is, for him, the first page of the third act in the series overall. He believes that with this episode, the show is well on its way to completion and is now on act three out of a 4 act series.
I was going to put this up on the main page, but I can't edit it. [http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-story-marymcdonnellbattlestargalactica,0,638786.story?coll=zap-tv-mainheadline Interview] It's an interview with Mary McDonnell about her character, the season 3 finale, and the Roslin/Adama relationship.

==Fix template==
Shane, can you pretty please fix the Star and Crew templates please. the Character box seemed to work fine by lightening the name but the others arnt quite right. If you could look into it, that would be great. cheers. --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 07:57, 14 February 2007 (CST)
== Episodes Smaller characters have starred in ==

Reason I Showed the episodes that Leoben had starred in was because i've got about 10 friends that keep asking everybody "what episode did number 3 star in where she did such and such" and etc. So I figured it would be convienent for me to go ahead and list the episodes Leoben had starred in. Is this ok Shane? I mean I think it helps as it dosen't hurt the page. I'll do it for all the guest stars like the cylons too if you want. --[[User:Darth Tytis|Darth Tytis]] 23:34, 14 February 2007 (CST)
:I feel asleep in front of my computer. Pardon for my delay. I suggest a "Table Matrix" then. [[List of character appearances (RDM)]]. Sorta how our "[[List of pilots]]" page work. Character pages, clearly stated in [[BW:SAC]] should not carry this information. If you want I can help, but I think it's a great idea. You might want to even suggest a "Last Seen" field for the {{tl|Character Data}} template. Sounds Great. I'll start working on it tommorow. Thanks! And also, I had posted in the think tank a link to a proposal of mine to creat some sort of rating system to were each fan of the show that comes here can rate there favorite episodes. Does that sound cool? --[[User:Darth Tytis|Darth Tytis]] 23:47, 14 February 2007 (CST)
One last thing, I had to tell you but i've gone through the tutorials about editing and stuff and I'm still having trouble creating different sections like you did on the pilots page. If you want you can do them but i'll do the best I can. {{unsigned|Darth Tytis}}
[[Galactica type battlestar|The veteran battlestar]] '''''Galactica'' (BS 75)''' is the most famous warship in the [[Colonial Fleet]]. Built in time to participate in the [[Cylon War]], she remained the only military vessel without integrated [[Computers|computer networks]]. Without networked computers, ''Galactica'' never upgraded to the new [[Command Navigation Program|integrated defense system software]] developed by Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] and his [[Number Six|team]]. Because of this and other fortunes, she became one of only [[Pegasus (RDM)|two]] known battlestars to survive the renewed [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]] on the [[Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], some 40 years after the end of the first war. At the time of the attack, she was part of the [[75th Battlestar Group]] (BSG-75).

== History ==

''Galactica'' was one of the twelve first battlestars to be laid down by the Colonials. Initially they built a battlestar to represent each colony, where ''Galactica'' represented [[Caprica]]. As such, she is some 50 years old. Following the outbreak of Cylon hostilities several more battlestars were built. ''Galactica's'' first commander was named [[Nash]] ([[Miniseries]]).
[[Image:Mini gal top.jpg|left|thumb|A dorsal view of ''Galactica''. The starboard [[flight pod]] is covered by a window to form the [[Galactica Museum|museum area]].]]
The original battlestars were all designed with non-integrated computer systems to avoid the Cylons' demonstrated ability to override or subvert networked command and control systems early in the war ([[Miniseries]]). Rather than technological sophistication, the battlestar depended on its sheer bulk and defensive / offensive capabilities to ward off any threats to itself or the Colonies.

Following the [[Armistice Station|armistice]] with the Cylons, and their withdrawal from Colonial space, ''Galactica'' and her sister ships served the Twelve Colonies in a variety of roles. While her surviving sister ships were scrapped or upgraded to match the systems capabilities of newer Colonial vessels, ''Galactica'' continued in service without her systems being fully networked or integrated, making her unique among Colonial military vessels ([[Miniseries]]). Galactica was relegated to intra-system duties for at least 20 years prior to her decommissioning.

With her active career drawing to a close, a decision was taken to retire ''Galactica'' and decommission her from service. [[Colonial Fleet]] chose not to scrap her, but to turn her into a combination of living museum to the original Cylon War and an educational center, with her conversion being overseen by her final commander, [[William Adama]] ([[Miniseries]]).

At the time of her formal decommissioning ceremony, ''Galactica'' is stripped of all but one of her operational [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] Mark VII squadrons, her munitions are destroyed, and her starboard landing pod is a pressurized [[Galactica Museum|museum]] which houses (among other things) a full squadron of [[Viper Mark II|Mk. II Vipers]] as well as a Viper model that appears [[Viper (TOS)|older than the Mark II]] (Miniseries, also in Deleted Scenes).

With the renewed and unexpected Cylon hostilities, ''Galactica'' quickly proves her worthiness as a warship is far from over as she sorties several Mark IIs retrieved from her museum to challenge her first Cylon attack in over 40 years (her last Mark VII squadron was sent to Caprica for reassignment). The old battlestar withstands a direct hit from a tactical nuclear missile while unsuccessfully performing evasive maneuvers, but later [[FTL|Jumps]] successfully to [[Ragnar Anchorage]] to retrieve much-needed ammunition stores at this hidden depot.

''Galactica'' finally bares her teeth in this new Cylon war as she single-handedly engages two [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] with her gun batteries, providing covering fire for [[The Fleet (RDM)|an assortment of 75 civilian ships]] containing the last survivors of the Twelve Colonies. All ships, with ''Galactica'' last to leave the engagement zone, escape to a destination past the [[Red Line]], never to return to Colonial space.

Since the exodus of the Colonials from their overrun homeworlds, ''Galactica'' becomes both protector and provider for the Fleet. She provides covering fire for the Fleet during Cylon attacks no fewer than 240 times ([[33]], [[Act of Contrition]]). The battlestar provides much of the Fleet with recycled water ([[Water]]) and she is the primary source of medical care, where groups of civilians are periodically brought aboard for check-ups and treatment ([[Litmus]]). ''Galactica'' also undertakes internal policing duties within the Fleet ([[Water]], [[Bastille Day]]).

''Galactica'' successfully goes on the offensive against the Cylons, capturing a [[tylium]] fuel mining and processing plant in the process ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]).

The [[Mercury class battlestar|advanced battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', commanded by Admiral [[Helena Cain]], joins ''Galactica'' approximately 6 months into their exile (See the series [[Timeline (RDM)|timeline]] for special information about this milestone).

''Pegasus'' and ''Galactica'' destroy two [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] as well as a critical Cylon support ship known as the [[Resurrection Ship]]. After Admiral Cain's death, President [[Laura Roslin]] promotes William Adama to Admiral, restoring him to overall Fleet command, but now with two battlestars at his disposal ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

===New Caprica===
Following the founding of [[New Caprica]], ''Galactica'' is assigned to the Orbital Defense Force that protects the planet. During this time the majority of its crew are sent to the surface in an effort to populate the planet and restore the human race – including most of its senior officers — seemingly convinced that the Cylons would never find New Caprica. The diminished staff inevitably results in basic maintenance becoming overlooked or ignored. Basic military responses, such as the launching of alert fighers and routine training exercises become difficult to execute. One year following the founding of New Caprica, a fleet of Cylon ships jump into orbit of the planet. Severely limited in its abilities, Admiral Adama and the Defense Fleet jumps away from New Caprica — vowing that they'd return to liberate the planet ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

===[[Battle of New Caprica]]===
Four months after the escape, ''Galactica'''s staff is still in the process of developing a rescue strategy with 16 training exercises having been completed and a 17th underway when an accident causes its early ending ([[Occupation]]). This forces both a change in strategy and the reformulation of a rescue plan to deal with personnel who have not seen conflict in 16 months. While ''Galactica'' fights to liberate the Colonials on-planet, ''Pegasus'' is assigned to protect the remaining civilian fleet and continue its search for [[Earth]] ("[[Precipice]]", "[[Exodus, Part I]]").

Coordinating with the New Caprica Resistance, ''Galactica'' deploys several waves of Vipers and Raptors to launch an offensive against the Cylons. As the resistance bombs Cylon facilities on the ground, Raptors deploy decoy drones to make it appear as if both ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' jumped into orbit. The Cylons reposition their forces to engage the decoys, while ''Galactica'' jumps into the atmosphere of the planet. ''Galactica'' deploys several squadrons as she falls to the surface, but takes severe damage from the atmospheric entry. Once back in orbit of the planet, the damage is ascertained as the Cylons close in. Close to death, ''Galactica'' survives thanks to the intervention of ''Pegasus''. Her [[FTL|FTL drives]] once again functioning, ''Galactica'' is able to escape from the system and reunites with the fleet, now the sole military vessel again after the destruction of ''Pegasus'' during the battle ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

''Galactica'' from this point forward bears the scars of this battle, significant scorching to the hull and the armour is visible. It has not been directly acknowledged whether this has affected ''Galactica'''s combat abilities or her [[FTL]]. However ''Galactica'' is still able to make combat jumps and hold off a superior Cylon force for a short duration in the [[Battle_of_NCD2539|Battle of NCD2539]] ([[A Measure of Salvation]]).

== Equipment ==
[[Image:BSG-KEW-Turret.jpg|thumb|One of ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> large cannon [[battery|turrets]]]]
''Galactica'' shares the same overall technical specifications as other original Colonial battlestars of [[Galactica type battlestar|her class]], with the following key differences and qualifications:

===Available Flight Pods===
As part of its decommissioning, ''Galactica's'' port [[flight pod]] was the only one in service. The starboard flight pod was enclosed and pressurized as the [[Galactica Museum|main museum display]] for her pending decommission. It is violently depressurized after a [[Heavy Raider]] crashes into it ([[Scattered]]).

By the time of the exodus from [[New Caprica]], the starboard hangar deck is being used as a temporary [[Camp Oil Slick|housing facility]] for refugees ([[Exodus, Part II]]). The starboard flight pod is apparently brought back to working flight recovery, as Major Lee Adama directs his Raptor boarding team to approach and land in the starboard pod ([[A Measure of Salvation]]).

===Nuclear Warheads===
''Galactica'' had five nuclear warheads as of "[[Bastille Day]]." Commander [[William Adama]] uses one warhead to destroy a Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]). Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] cannibalizes one to use in his [[Cylon Detector]], which he later gives to [[Gina]], who detonates it aboard ''[[Cloud Nine]]''. This leaves ''Galactica'' with three warheads (It is unknown how many nuclear warheads ''Pegasus'' still had when it encountered ''Galactica'', and they may have pooled their nuclear ordnance stockpiles since then). As of "[[The Eye of Jupiter]]", Galactica has at least seven warheads ([[Missile tubes|launch tubes]] 4 through 10) attached to missiles that can be used for ground assault.

:''The yield of these weapons is unknown. It is likely they are of a "dial a yield" design which is common in real-life nuclear weapons. Because the "physics" of nuclear weapon design is a measureable science, and based on the size of the weapon seen in ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]]), it is likely the yield of Galactica's weapons are between 5 and 150kt. This is extrapolated from the size of the weapon, compared to a modern day ([[w:W80|W80]])-class nuclear warhead used by the United States.''

===Available spacecraft===

:''For information on the fighter squadrons stationed on ''Galactica'' see: [[Squadrons of Galactica]]''

====Vipers====
Prior to the arrival of ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', ''Galactica'' has at maximum thirty-four Vipers, of which at least six are Mark VIIs (c.f. [[Viper tally]]).

''Galactica'' receives additional supplies from ''Pegasus'' since her arrival that helps in repair and refurbishment of her original fighter complement; more recently, she receives new Mark VII Vipers built aboard ''Pegasus'' using raw materials mined from an asteroid and the advanced battlestar's Viper construction facilities ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus,]] [[Scar]]).

====Raptors====
The number of [[Raptor|Raptors]] available to ''Galactica'' is portrayed inconsistently. The current assumption is that the battlestar has at least five Raptors, having left [[Ragnar Anchorage]] with at least eight (c.f. [[Raptor tally]]).

====Other Craft====
*''Galactica'' currently posesses two [[Heavy Raider|Heavy Raiders]]. One is hit by ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> defensive fire and crashes into the starboard flight pod with unknown damage ([[Scattered]]). The other returns in operational status from Caprica ([[Home, Part I]]). One of ''Galactica'''s [[Heavy Raider]]s is relieved of its FTL navigation system for use on the rescue mission to [[Caprica]] ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).
*A second [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raider]] is in ''Galactica's'' possession after [[Daniel Novacek]]'s "escape" from a basestar ([[Hero]]), replacing the one retrieved by [[Kara Thrace]] and lost during the quest for the [[Arrow of Apollo]] ([[Scattered]]).
*An experimental stealth fighter, the [[Blackbird]], is constructed using spare parts ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]) and used in a critically successful reconnaissance mission to explore the nature of what comes to be known as the [[Resurrection Ship]]. The Blackbird is later destroyed after completing her last mission during the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship]] ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).
*''Galactica'' possesses fuel tankers used to supply fuel to Vipers and Raptors in flight without the need to dock with the ship. These may be dedicated craft or specially fitted shuttles or Raptors ([[Occupation]]).

== Crew ==
Before the attack, ''Galactica'' has approximately 2,800 crewmen, while awaiting its decommissioning. By the time of the arrival of ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', attrition has reduced this number to about 2,660. (c.f. [[Crew tally]])
*Between "[[Act of Contrition]]" and "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" ''Galactica's'' offensive capability is also greatly hampered by the number of [[List of Pilots|qualified pilots]] available, and their lack of flight simulators with which to train more. Since ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> reunion with ''Pegasus'', this has ceased to be an issue ([[Scar]]).

[[Image:Mini gal side viper.jpg|right|thumb|A stricken and slowly spinning ''Galactica'' after a nuclear missile strike. [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck's]] [[Viper Mark II|Viper]] closes in to survey.]]

====Senior Staff ====
== Recent rollback ==

Welcome. I rolled back the minor edit in [[Eye of Jupiter]]. We don't know of any chronological association between the various Cylon models; the numbers themselves don't tell the whole story. To viewers, the final five are the last five revealed, but to the Cylons, they are simply missing. It could be the first five made, or the last five made, or something in between. For now, "lost" is preferable to "last" for the purposes of that article. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 08:57, 1 February 2007 (CST)
:Understandable, but they're not really "lost," we just don't know who they are. If anyone sees this, what do ''you'' think about using a different word, like "unknown?" [[User:RMelon|RMelon]] 10:08, 1 February 2007 (CST)

== Overview ==
: ''Baltar is rigorously questioned about his past and what the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] know about [[Earth]]. Meanwhile, both [[Kara Thrace]] and [[Lee Adama]] struggle with their feelings for one another and are forced to make a decision about their respective marriages.''

== Summary ==
===Teaser===

*The episode begins as the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] moves past a small planetoid. Viewers hear a lullaby being sung as the shot moves past [[duty locker]]s as people sleep, to show [[Gaius Baltar]], in a [[brig]] on ''[[Galactica]]'', tearing strips of fabric.
*To pressure him into revealing any secrets or tactical knowledge of the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]], Baltar has been forced to stay awake. In turn, the prisoner has gone on a hunger strike, and believes that the Fleet's leadership will eventually kill him outright, rather than give him a fair trial.
*Baltar's virtual [[Number Six]] appears to question his actions, but only briefly. She soon begins to "aid" him in his task; he ties the fabric strips to form a hangman's noose.
*Elsewhere, Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta]] cannot sleep. He dresses and heads for the brig. A [[marine]] on guard stops his advance.
*The virtual Six "pushes" Baltar's cot, and the man begins to choke on his noose. Six tells him to take slow, deep breaths.
*Baltar appears to awake in a [[Cylon rebirthing tank]], surrounded by three Six copies. He shouts in celebration, believing that, at least, he knows his true nature as a Cylon.
*The Sixes gentle touches suddenly become harsh scratches and lacerations. A Six tells Baltar that he is not, in fact, a Cylon, but a human about to die. All three push Baltar into the tank's gelatinous mixture. One Six enters the pool, lying above him and kisses him as he is held to drown.
*Baltar's mind was likely suffering from oxygen deprivation, as his marine guard cuts him down and successfully resuscitates him. Gaeta leaves to find Dr. [[Cottle]].

===Act 1===
*[[William Adama|Admiral Adama]], [[Saul Tigh]], Dr. Cottle, and President [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]] sit in Adama's quarters, discussing what to do to get information from Baltar. Acknowledging that his hunger strike and suicide attempt have soured his mood, Roslin suggests an alternative plan.
*When Lieutenant Gaeta is asked why he was at Baltar's cell so early in the morning, he tells the president that he couldn't sleep and wanted to speak with the former president.
*Elsewhere, [[Lee Adama]] treats his friend [[Galen Tyrol]] to a little surprise: A number of crew have created a bar, probably on the starboard [[hangar deck]], complete with a [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid arcade game]], an old [[Viper Mark II]] hanging above for atmosphere. "[[Joe's bar]]" is filled with many people who have managed to put aside the troubles of the day. Tyrol and Adama have a drink as they discuss their marital problems; Tyrol and his wife [[Cally Tyrol|Cally]] have had an argument that has apparently left him "in the doghouse". Adama is reluctant to interact with his wife, [[Anastasia Dualla]], as his angst over his love of [[Kara Thrace]] continues to fight with him.
*Major Adama returns to his quarters, quite drunk, to find Dualla still awake and doing some work, apparently drinking some liquor or type of wine. She tries to confirm if they are still going to have dinner later that day as Adama dozes off, leaving Dualla disappointed.
*A similar conversation is occurring at Kara Thrace's bunk, as [[Samuel Anders]] resists an attempt by Thrace to get more intimate. Thrace darkly pokes fun at herself, calling herself a "two-timing bitch" of a spouse. Anders does not return Thrace's darkness, but asks if she is in love with Lee Adama.
*When Thrace hesitates to answer, Anders tells her to explore what she feels, believing that Thrace's [[Flesh and Bone|alleged destiny]] and her feelings about Anders may still be significant. The former resistance fighter leaves Thrace to herself in her bunk.
*President Roslin appears in Baltar's cell. Mirroring a similar event on [[New Caprica]] months before where Roslin is [[New Caprica Detention Center|incarcerated by the Cylons]] and Baltar arrives to speak with her, Roslin hands him his glasses. Baltar, realizing the reference, takes his glasses and puts them on.
*After lighting a cigar for him, she sits. Baltar complains of having been force-fed by Cottle's staff, to which Roslin is non-plussed. She asks him questions about his involvement with the Cylons. She questions him using [[Epiphanies|her personal knowledge]] of his interaction with a [[Caprica Six|known Cylon model]] before the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]], asking if he allowed a Cylon access to the [[Colonial Defense Mainframe]].
*Baltar equivocates at first, then stands his ground about his involvement, calling Roslin's accusations a "rehash" of the same lies as she did prior to the [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|presidential election]].
*Roslin shakes her head, and escalates her questioning. She shows Baltar a series of pictures of the dead on New Caprica who were killed by Cylons for supposed insurrection. Uncharacteristically, Roslin's voice rises to a shrill, yelling at Baltar as she flings each of the pictures. She yells for Saul Tigh to have Baltar taken from his cell and carried to the airlock.
*Baltar shouts his innocence as the marines move him through the [[memorial hallway]] as Roslin tries to haunt the former president with faces of the Colonies' dead. Baltar stops his "executioners" to show one photo of a man he knew. After telling them that he would not do anything to harm his friend, his wife and Baltar's godchildren, the marines cart the scientist away.

===Act 2===
*The Fleet's leadership convene once more. Roslin's plan failed; Baltar called the bluff about being thrown in an airlock, and the marines have returned him back to his cell.
*When Roslin suggests a different, less aggressive approach, Admiral Adama suggests the use of a special [[Interrogation drug|hallucinogenic drug]] used experimentally by the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial military]]. Roslin's expression is a mixture of awe and surprise, but asks if ''Galactica'' has this drug onboard.
*Lee Adama and Dualla have an argument about Kara Thrace and the future of their marriage. Dualla says that she married Adama because she loved him, choosing to have him for as long as he or Kara Thrace would let him. She resigns herself to her marriage's failure and tells Adama that she will not stand in his way if he were to choose Thrace over her.
*Kara Thrace and Lee Adama meet privately. When Thrace asks Adama if he loves her and would be with her if she were to leave Anders, Adama equivocates, remembering Thrace's fickleness [[Unfinished Business|after he declared his love a year before]]. Thrace leaves him to think about the situation.
*Major Adama returns to the bar and drinks more, toying with his wedding band. He asks Chief Tyrol if he ever thought about what his future with [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] would have been like, or had any regrets. With a quick drink, Tyrol replies in the negative.
*Major Adama stumbles back to his quarters, losing his wedding band somewhere in ''Galactica's'' corridors.
*Baltar is strapped down in [[sickbay]] as Roslin authorizes the administering of the interrogation drug to Baltar. Adama warns not to make any loud noises and orders additional restraints on the prisoner's head.

===Act 3===
*Baltar finds himself floating in a nondescript dark body of water, with only a dim light shining from above.
*Adama and Roslin talk to Baltar in his hallucinogenic haze, asking him questions about the Cylon's knowledge of the whereabouts of [[Earth]], and his mission at the [[Temple of Five]].
*Baltar, genuinely believing that his life is in peril, tells how he believed that he was one of the [[final five]] Cylons and was seeking an answer.
*Medic [[Layne Ishay]] accidentally knocks over some equipment, creating a loud clang, which interrupts Baltar's interrogation momentarily.
*Adama warns Baltar to cooperate so that he would be able to "get out", then turns off the flashlight he was using to create the lighting effect in Baltar's illusory world.
*Baltar begins to talk about [[Caprica Six]] and her involvement, as a vision of Six appears and disappears next to him in the water.
*Baltar vision shifts to him in a Cylon rebirthing tank again, this time, however, he is surrounded by dark figures that are later revealed as the Colonial dead from the Colonies. As he tries to explain himself, the figures push him into the water, and a young girl hovers over him as he continues the dark descent.
*As Baltar sinks in his vision, in the real world, Baltar's vital signs begin to drop as well. Dr. Cottle calls off further interrogation and proceeds to revive Baltar.

===Act 4===
*A final attempt to gain information from Baltar uses Lieutenant Gaeta to lure Baltar into a sense of comfort by aiding the Colonial officer in his calculations to Earth, hoping that he will leak any information on Cylon tactics or technology.
*Initially, Baltar acquiesces and begins to correct Gaeta's work until he senses Gaeta's awareness of something else in the cell.
*Baltar realizes that his cell has a surveillance camera, and becomes belligerent, which begins to anger Gaeta.
*Realizing that Gaeta's anger could make things much worse, the Fleet leadership leaves their observation room to interdict Gaeta.
*Meanwhile, Baltar whispers something to Gaeta (See Podcast Information[http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Taking_a_Break_From_All_Your_Worries#Notes]) who then uses the pen he brought into the room to stab Baltar in the neck.
*Adama manages to subdue Gaeta, and Cottle looks over Baltar, whose injuries are not serious.
*Meanwhile, Lee Adama and his wife meet in Joe's Bar.
*Adama, having since found his lost wedding ring, confesses that he has loved Dualla and how dedicated she has been to him, never realizing how much he needed her affection.
*As the two embrace, Adama tries to avoid looking across the bar at Kara Thrace and Anders. Thrace returns the glance before Adama breaks it off.
*Laura Roslin and Admiral Adama rest in the admiral's quarters, with Roslin reclining on a bunk and Adama sitting at the foot of the bunk. They debate, with the failure of both measures of interrogation on Baltar, what to do with him.
*When Adama suggests that there is still an opportunity to make Baltar "disappear," Roslin touches Adama's arm tenderly but briefly, reminding him of his humanity as she responds that they couldn't do that to him.
*Roslin suggests that one option is still on the table: Give Baltar a trial.

===Bonus Scene===
Part of a bonus scene was shown after the original airing of this episode on Scifi Channel and the full scene was made available on SciFi's website.

*Roslin talks with Caprica-Six after overseeing her transfer to a cell on ''Galactica'', saying that all the Colonials have surmised so far is that Baltar was not involved in the initial Cylon attack.
*Roslin tries to gain information by promising Six that she won't be executed, but Six counters that Roslin made the same promise to [[Leoben]] and broke it ([[Flesh and Bone]]).
*Roslin asks for Six's name and is given it ("Caprica"), and recognizes the authenticity of her feelings for Baltar.
*Caprica-Six wonders if the Colonials' justice system has withered away along with their conscience and adamantly states that she will not reveal any information unless she is assured that Baltar will receive a fair trial. If he does, she will be willing to be the primary witness and share all the information that Roslin wants to know.

== Questions ==
*Was something else at work behind Gaeta's interestingly-timed bout of insomnia?
* What is the nature of the Tyrols' marital problems?
* What is going to happen to Caprica-Six aboard ''Galactica''?
* What will the civilian reaction be once it is known that Baltar was captured?
* Will Apollo and Starbuck keep their vows to their respective spouses from this point on, or will there be another intimate encounter between the two?
* Why did ''Galatica'' have the experimental [[interrogation drug]] that Adama spoke about?
* Given shortages throughout the Fleet, where does the Fleet get its alcohol supplies?

== Analysis ==
* Baltar, despite extreme stress, various forms of torture, and attempted suicide, maintains a high degree of self-preservation. Even at moments when it appears he is about to confess all of his wrongs, knowing that his life might be in danger, he finds a way to circumvent the questions and redirect them to someone or something else that makes him look to be the victim - this is classic behavior of a sociopathic personality.
* Adama, during the interrogation session, seems to know more about the capabilities of the [[interrogation drug|hallucinogen]] than it initially appears when he mentions the drug to Roslin. He appears to have done this type of interrogation before.
* The episode draws connections between Baltar and Roslin and their respective roles, especially in how both have now switched places. Roslin almost word for word quotes Baltar when it comes down to the best interrogation method: using a stick versus a carrot. The same type of analogy Baltar used with Admiral Cain in "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]". Moreover there is a clear callback to Baltar visiting Roslin in her cell and handing her her glasses during the occupation of New Caprica.
* This episode displays the darker side of Adama as throughout the episode he is consistently the one to display a bitter streak towards Baltar. He cites many different options and choices that one would consider to be contradictory to his own stances of how humans were to treat each other before. For example, he directly opposed President Zarek when it became known that people were "disappearing" without given a trial ([[Collaborators]]). Yet, with Baltar, Adama suggests to Roslin that it is not too late to make him disappear.
* The hallucinogen appears to affect how an individual's brain interprets sound. Adama ordered that complete silence be kept as he and Roslin are the only ones allowed to speak to Baltar. However, once Layne Ishay is startled by Baltar's screams, she accidentally knocks over some equipment. The clanging and noise caused the hallucinated water to become turmoil and reach the brink of drowning Baltar.
* A substantial amount of time seems to have passed between "[[Rapture]]" and this episode as Kara Thrace's hands have recovered from the burns she received on the algae planet. Baltar's appearance has also more facial hair than he had when he was captured inside the Temple of Five.
*Roslin probably connects Caprica-Six's name to Baltar saying it during his interrogation, thus deepening her belief that he is guilty.
* Judging by the reaction of the patrons, the liquor being served is most likely recently manufactured moonshine of dubious quality. Whatever passes for "the good stuff" in the bar is likely whatever hasn't been appropriated by high ranking personnel and may have been made on [[New Caprica]].
*In "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]", Lee Adama promises the pilots to build them a bar should a habitable planet be found. However, given the time that has passed, this is probably unrelated to Joe's bar.

== Notes ==
*This is the second episode of the series to be directed by [[Edward James Olmos]]. The first was Season 1's "[[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]".
*With 30 characters, this episode has the longest title of any Re-imagined Series episode to date.
*The title is a partial quote from "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," the theme song to the television program ''[[Wikipedia:Cheers|Cheers]]'' written by [[Wikipedia:Gary Portnoy|Gary Portnoy]] & Judy Hart Angelo. — "Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got./''Taking a break from all your worries'', sure would help a lot."
*Information from the podcast:
**The episode was originally meant to be far lighter in tone and revolve mainly around Joe's bar, showing how people build it and fight to keep it. This explains the somewhat paradoxical episode title, given the dark tone it ultimately took.
**There was a larger subplot for [[Layne Ishay]] in which she can't stand Baltar being tortured anymore and leaks his presence and treatment to the Fleet. A remnant of this is present in her knocking over the instrument tray.
**There were discussions about a subplot that involved Baltar being guilty of an incident before the Cylon occupation in which many, already discriminated, Saggitarons were killed. Ron Moore relates that Baltar threatens to implicate Gaeta in that (the scene where Baltar whispers something inaudible in Gaeta's ear) and that this is what makes Gaeta snap and stab Baltar.
**[[Joe's bar]] will be featured again in future episodes.
*The songs heard as background music in the bar are original compositions. One is titled "Lord Knows I Would", composed and performed by [http://www.rayayarbrough.com/ Raya Yarbrough] - who is the voice of most vocals on the BSG soundtrack - and available on one her albums. "All That Remains" is also performed by her, but composed by [[Bear McCreary]] and is part of his [http://bearmccreary.com/html/blog/blog018.htm ''Rest Stop'' soundtrack].
*The secret experiments with hallucinogenic drugs for purposes of interrogation parallels the [[w:Project MKULTRA|CIA's MK ULTRA]] program from the 1960's and 1970's. In that program, [[w:LSD|LSD]] was investigated as a possible "truth serum".
==Podcast Question==

So, these things involving Joe's Bar, Layne, and Sagitarrons, were they ideas proposed for the episode that got dropped in the writing phase, or did they film these scenes and they got cut? [[User:Alpha5099|Alpha5099]] 12:51, 29 January 2007 (CST)

:I think most was dropped during rewrites before it was shot, but as you see there are some pieces of it left, that still work. For example Ishay is obviously shocked at what they do. Though if I recall correctly, the Sagittaron thing could become part of Baltar's trial later. I'd have to listen to it again. But so could you ;) --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 13:00, 29 January 2007 (CST)

== Baltar = Saddam ==

That was my character and visual connection.

Just a few other personal observations... The writing is hitting a new level. The last couple have seemed more sophisticated to me. One reason might be that the writers are catching the characters up on all the facts that the viewers have known for some time. The humans don't come off quite as clueless as they used to. Also, I assume that drastic time jumps are usually avoided due to fear that the viewer won't be able to keep up, but I've noticed that this episode skips over long exposition to get to the torture scenes and the finale of Rapture, the "rescue" from the planet's surface and the supernova, was all montage -- totally unusual but consistent with the stronger focus on characters.

:I don't see it. The closest historical parallel I'm aware of is [[Wikipedia:Philippe Pétain|Philippe Pétain]]. -- [[User:Gordon Ecker|Gordon Ecker]] 20:26, 29 January 2007 (CST)
::I just meant the look mostly, and the victim mentality. I wasn't making a historical comparison.--[[User:Galactageek|Galactageek]] 01:04, 30 January 2007 (CST)
:::Visually, he sort of reminds me of The Falconer from SNL. -- [[User:Gordon Ecker|Gordon Ecker]] 01:39, 30 January 2007 (CST)
::::I think he's going for a Jesus look, to visually parallel the character's internal belief in his role as a Messianic figure. It should also be noted that James Callis usually wears a beard in the off-seasons. He can be seen with one in the pre-season one Lowdown, when he's hanging out with Jamie Bamber in London. --[[User:Slander|Slander]] 11:36, 30 January 2007 (CST)
==Mary McDonnell==

Did anyone else just absolutely ''love'' her performance in this episode? Especially the "COLONEL TIGH, GET IN HERE!" part :D -[[User:Madbrood|Madbrood]] 23:42, 29 January 2007 (CST)
:She was frakkin scary. :) --[[User:Galactageek|Galactageek]] 01:05, 30 January 2007 (CST)
::We have NEVER seen her yell like that. I realized she and Tigh were playing the "bad cop, evil cop" scenario, knowing that this is not her normal thing. And I've never seen the characters so dark. She looked like she was practically ''orgasmic'' when Adama suggested the use of drugs on Baltar --and that he had a stash of the stuff. Wild and crazy acting. --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 07:27, 30 January 2007 (CST)
:::Yet, we also see that it took a lot out of her. She's probably needed a good, cathartic screaming match for a very long time, but catharsis is an emotionally-exhausting experience. At the same time, she feels like she went through all of that for nothing, she failed. So, when Adama mentions a possible second option, she's filled with a new hope. Those subtle moments are what makes this show so great; look at the exchange of looks between Ellen and Saul as Saul realizes that Ellen knows the drink is poisoned. Absolutely brilliant. --[[User:Slander|Slander]] 11:51, 30 January 2007 (CST)
:McDonnell's performance in this episode came as a total surprise to me, since we're used to a calm Roslin who prefers the carrot over the stick, so to say. This episode showed a totally different Roslin, which McDonnell played magnificently. --[[User:Catrope|Catrope]] 08:53, 30 January 2007 (CST)
== Booze Supply ==

Given the shortages of damn near everything else, alcohol certainly seems to be in generous supply. I'll grant that they had plenty of time to brew (and the natural resources to do so) while on New Caprica, and that heavy drinking seems to be the post-Holocaust pastime of choice. I'd really like to see the show exploring where the Fleet is getting its supplies from, though. Maybe there's a brewmaster out in the civilians who didn't have the time or resources to put his skills to use until New Caprica. Maybe Tyrol inspired a few dozen crew members to operate distilleries of their own. All I really know is that booze flows like water on ''Galactica'' and I'd like to hoist a shot at Joe's. ==Podcast Question==

== Baltar = Saddam ==

==Mary McDonnell==
