As the basic foot-soldier of the Cylon ground forces, the modern '''Cylon Centurion''' appears to represent a significant evolution of the [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005]]. The Centurion serves a variety of functions within the Cylon hierarchy, acting as guard, soldier, gardener, janitor, and periodically executioner. Whether they can recognize members of the [[Final Five]] - like [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]] are able to - is presently unknown.

Centurions are sentient by design, however, a device called a [[telencephalic inhibitor]] restricts their higher cognitive functions and prevents them from exercising full self-awareness ([[Six of One]]). The device likely also precludes Centurions from harming any of the "[[Significant Seven]]" humanoid Cylons (except by [[Hero|explicit order]]). According to [[Sharon Agathon]], this was done to prevent a rebellion akin to the one that started the [[Cylon War|initial Cylon conflict]] ([[Precipice]]). Once the inhibitor is removed, Centurions gain the ability to reason for themselves, and subsequently turn against several models of humanoid Cylon to halt the lobotomization of Raiders deemed to have surpassed their useful mental capacity ([[Six of One]]). Furthermore, the Centurions are unable to distinguish one copy of [[humanoid Cylon]] from another ([[Precipice]])

While primarily mechanical, it is suggested by humanoid Cylons (discussing a viral [[Lymphocytic encephalitis|epidemic]] aboard a stranded [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]) that the Centurions have at least some bio-mechanical components. This adverse reaction to the virus, however, could also be a result of a wireless link they share with the [[Hybrid]]; a [[Number Three]] states that the Centurions started shutting down as soon as the ship's Hybrid became infected ([[Torn]]).

Unlike the Model 0005, a single modern Centurion can effectively combat a squad of Colonial soldiers. Long, talon-like fingers act as bladed weapons during close-combat, and fold back to reveal a three-barreled automatic [[KEW|projectile weapon]] mounted at the end of each arm. Since the Centurion appears to have a large internal munitions storage, and does not have to reload for prolonged periods, getting close enough to inflict damage to it is difficult. In addition to these built-in weapons, Centurions are capable of carrying larger, more powerful weapons not integrated into their systems, such as mortars and missile launchers. In "[[Razor]]", one Centurion boarding ''Pegasus'' carries a large, and likely powerful, rifle in its hands.

The newer Centurions are also more agile than their predecessors, being capable of extremely fast [[w:bipedal locomotion|bipedal locomotion]]. Additionally, their legs are powerful enough to allow for a jump height of several meters.

It is unknown whether Centurions can "speak" to other Cylons - they likely communicate with each other via a wireless network, making verbal speech unnecessary. They can, however, hear and respond to verbal commands from the humanoid Cylons ([[Hero]]).

Some versions of the Centurion wield markedly improved armor. A squadron of Centurions that board ''[[Galactica]]'' are unaffected by standard weaponry, being subdued only by armor-piercing explosive rounds ([[Valley of Darkness]]). The Centurions that [[Karl Agathon|Helo]] encounters on [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] appear to react more slowly, behave less intelligently, and are more easily destroyed by small-arms fire. However, if one takes into consideration the overall plan that the Cylons had for Helo and Sharon Agathon, it may be surmised that these variants were intended to inflict psychological, rather than physical harm. Conversely, Centurions seen on [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] display an increased group intelligence, working together to construct an anti-aircraft battery from parts of a [[Heavy Raider]] ([[Fragged]]).

"Bullethead", "clanker" and "chrome job" are common Colonial nicknames for these advanced and deadly Cylon constructs ("[[Downloaded]]", "[[Rapture]]", [[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance]]).

===Cinematic Notes===
The creators of the Re-imagined Series decided that using actors in an elaborate Cylon robot outfit (as was done in the Original Series) would detract from the realism of the series. They decided to make fully computer-generated Cylon Centurions for the new series.

Inaugural director [[Michael Rymer]] wanted the new Cylon warrior to blend in and avoid detracting from the live actor's performances. However, the new designs were eye-catching, and the new robot became a popular addition to many scenes. The virtual Cylons are designed with full articulation in the hands and joints that gives a realistic appearance to the viewer. Initially the new warrior was built with more human movement, such as swaggering. However, the movements did not fit the robotic attitude that the writers wanted to convey and were later discarded.

When filming a scene that will later have virtual Cylon warriors inserted, a life-size cardboard stand-in is used for framing purposes. The stand-in gives the camera operator an idea of how much space to leave in the frame and the animators a reference on how big the Centurions should be. The stand-in is removed so when shooting begins, the actors are reacting to an empty space. This minimizes the amount of work VFX must do to add a Centurion to the shot.

Admiral '''Helena Cain''' hails from the colony [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Tauron|Tauron]], and is the commanding officer of the [[Mercury class battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' at the time of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. She is a hard woman, unafraid of making difficult decisions and unflinching in her will to do what she sees as right. These traits sometimes compel her to feel that she has been left no choice but to take controversial, unpopular and morally questionable choices.

==Biography==
===Childhood===
Helena Cain was born during the first [[Cylon War]]. On the last day of the war, Tauron was under attack by Cylon [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] and [[Cylon Centurion Model 0005|Centurion]] ground forces. Her sister [[Lucy Cain]] and her [[Cain (father)|father]] were pinned down in a building under heavy fire. When her father was injured trying to escape, he told Helena to get Lucy to a shelter, before dying. The two made it out of the building, but outside Helena panicked, left Lucy in a field of rubble and ran away to hide in a container. When Cain came out again after the Cylons retreated, she found only her sister's doll on the ground ("[[Razor]]", extended version). These traumatic events were formative for her future.

===Cylon attack and guerrilla warfare===

When ''Pegasus'' is scheduled for an extensive overhaul at the [[Scorpion Fleet Shipyards]], Cain has regular meetings with [[Gina Inviere]], a civilian contractor working for the [[Ministry of Defense]], to work out the details of the retrofit. The two eventually become romantically involved.

Shortly before the [[Cylon attack]], Lieutenant [[Kendra Shaw]] is assigned to the battlestar as Cain's personal aide. When the lieutenant fails to make it to [[CIC]] immediately after her arrival, Cain chews her out in front of the crew, but breaks into laughter after Shaw leaves, showing that she isn't always as hard as she appears to be.

When the Cylons [[Fall of the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards|attack the shipyards]], Cain is in her quarters, working out and going over efficiency reports. She makes it to CIC and immediately orders the battlestar unmoored. When the navigational computer is discovered to be offline and nuclear missiles are inbound, Cain orders a [[blind jump]] to escape certain destruction. With many of her crew dead and the destruction of the Twelve Colonies confirmed, she holds a speech vowing to take revenge on the Cylons. However, in a private dinner with her XO [[Jurgen Belzen]], [[Jack Fisk]], Inviere and Shaw, she promises that she has no intention to unnecessarily waste lives or resources in an emotional quest for revenge.

Shortly later, a Cylon communications relay is detected, which the crew believes to be an easy target. On arrival however, it turns out the target is a Cylon staging area, filled with 15 squadrons of [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raider]]s. Belzen urges Cain to recover their Vipers and retreat, but instead she seemingly forgets her earlier promise and orders the launch of all remaining fighters, which Belzen refuses to do in the face of such odds. Cain asks the XO for his side arm, and shoots him in the head in front of the crew. She then turned to Fisk and orders him to launch the Vipers, which he does. At the same time, Inviere allows a group of [[Cylon Centurion]]s to board the ship, causing many deaths. Shaw reveals her as a Cylon agent in CIC and Cain orders her arrest. ''Pegasus'' manages to win the [[Battle of the Communications Relay|battle]], but with staggering losses.

Cain is deeply stung by Inviere's betrayal, her feelings toward her erstwhile lover turned into hatred and scorn. She gives [[Alastair Thorne]] free rein in interrogating her for information, suggesting "pain ... degradation, fear, shame." This sets the tone for the interrogations, ultimately leading to measures such as gang rape.

When ''Pegasus'' happens upon a small civilian fleet, Admiral Cain decides to strip it of resources and personnel, including their FTL drives. The civilians, however, refuse the cooperate. Resistance is particularly high on the ''[[Scylla]]''. When a boarding team led by Shaw and Fisk fails to make the civilians cooperate, Cain orders to shoot the families of every conscript who refuses to obey. Shaw fires the first shot and eventually 10 people are killed, thus breaking the resistance. Cain is very impressed by Shaw's actions in the civilian standoff and promotes her to the rank of captain, explaining that Shaw has the qualities of a "razor"; someone who is able to shut down all emotions and inhibitions in battle in order to survive.

Despite the impossible odds, Cain intends to sustain a campaign of guerrilla warfare against the occupying Cylon forces. She then led the battlestar away from the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], following a Cylon fleet that trails what they discovered as the fellow battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' ("[[Razor]]", "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]").

===Galactica===
Upon meeting up with Commander [[William Adama]]'s [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] six months later, she assumes command and transfers personnel from ''Galactica'' to ''Pegasus'', including [[Lee Adama]] and [[Kara Thrace]], indicating that Adama has let military discipline become too lax. Cain is more interested in fighting the Cylons, seemingly oblivious to the point that she and the ships around her are all that was left of the human race, whose survival is more paramount than offensive assaults. While Adama initially welcomes such attacks against a mysterious Cylon force that followed the Fleet (to stop it from following them), his attitude begins to cool about Cain's very strict and unmerciful leadership.

Cain's actions also raise concerns with President [[Laura Roslin]]. Cain recognizes Roslin and her former role as Secretary of Education. After the Fleet command transfer from Adama to Cain, Roslin makes several attempts to call Cain to request supplies for the civilian fleet, but all of Roslin's calls are ignored.

===Court-martial, standoff===
After the suspect fatal assault of one of her crew members, Lieutenant Thorne, Cain arrests Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] and Lieutenant [[Karl Agathon]] and has them flown to ''Pegasus'', under Adama's protest, since traditionally a trial is held on the ship where an incident has occurred. Cain uses ''Galactica'''s log against Adama when he asks for a tribunal; Cain notes that Adama dismissed the last council unilaterally when the verdict did not suit him. Cain summarily court-martials the prisoners herself in a matter of hours, sentencing them to death. Commander Adama is far from pleased, and orders an assault crew to head for ''Pegasus'' to bring his men back. Cain responds by deploying her squadrons of advanced Viper Mark VIIs against Adama's museum collection of Viper Mark IIs in a tense standoff ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

The tense game of chicken that begins is ended by Starbuck, flying the [[Blackbird]] as she returns from her unofficial recon mission on the unknown Cylon ship. Starbuck transmits the pictures she took of the [[Resurrection Ship]] back to ''Pegasus'''s CIC. Upon Thrace's return to ''Pegasus'', Cain is so impressed with her performance that she promotes Thrace to Captain and ''Pegasus'' [[CAG]], replacing the competent but uncreative and inflexible Captain [[Cole Taylor|Taylor]]. Cain tasks Starbuck with planning the joint strike on the Resurrection Ship.

===Attack on the Resurrection Ship, and assassination===

After Captain Thrace briefs both Adama, Apollo, and Cain on her plan to attack the Resurrection Ship, Adama pulls Starbuck aside and outlines a plan to assassinate Cain following the attack. At the same time, Cain instructs [[Jack Fisk]] to lead a detachment of marines to "terminate Adama's command" after the battle ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

When the moment arrives, neither commander decides to send their execution orders, leaving Thrace and Fisk visibly relieved. Cain survives Adama's plan, ironically, because Adama solicits advice from [[Sharon Agathon|the second copy of Sharon Valerii]], who reminds him of his decommissioning speech that asked whether humanity asked itself if it deserved to survive ([[Miniseries]]). That is, Adama's actions in assassinating Cain would be a good example of why humanity deserved what the Cylons dealt to them so many months ago. Although it may have been due to realizing Adama's value as a commander during the battle, the reasons for Cain staying her hand were never revealed, and remain a topic of debate among fans.

Unfortunately for Cain, shortly after Adama's window to assassinate Cain had passed, [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] helps Inviere escape from the brig. Inviere makes her way to Cain's quarters and shoots Cain at point blank range. A soldier to the last, Cain's final words are "[[Frak]] you."

Cain's funeral is given full military honors, with Fisk and Thrace giving eulogies. Though Thrace only knew Cain briefly, she obviously admired the woman, stating "We were safer with her than we are without." ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]). Several months later, Adama tells his son that he can't find any faults in Cain's tactical decisions, and refuses to pass judgment on her, because he has people to keep him in check when he is in danger of going down a similar path, and never had to go through Cain's situation in the first place ([[Razor]]).

*Unlike Commander Cain in the Original Series, Admiral Cain is a superior officer to Commander William Adama. The Original Series character of Adama held a higher rank than Cain, relieving him of command for a time in the two part episode, "[[The Living Legend, Part I|The Living Legend]]".

*Actress Michelle Forbes said on her character, "She’s lost perspective. People ask, ‘Is she insane? Is she psychotic?’ I hope that’s not how she came across because that was never the intention. I think some individuals can appear to be that way, but this is a woman who did what she had to do in order to survive during some very brutal conflicts. Along the way, Cain lost her sense of judgment as well as her sense of reason and rationale. That was all very interesting for me to play. Specialist '''Cally Henderson Tyrol''' is a young woman who joined the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]] as a means to pay for dental school ([[Fragged]]). Cally is not fond of [[FTL]] jumps ([[Miniseries]]), possibly because she suffers nausea during them ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

Cally, as well as her boss, [[Chief Tyrol]], seems prone to anger after a terrible event. Unlike the Chief, Cally tends to take decisive action as a result of her anger, rather than becoming immobile or overly irrational.

Cally is particularly adept at finding ways around the lack of replacement parts aboard ''Galactica''. As Chief Tyrol often comments, Cally's small stature allows her better access to smaller spaces in the [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] and [[Raptor]]s she repairs.

*Cally is disgusted when several drunken ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' crewmen brag about repeatedly raping the captured [[humanoid Cylon]] known as [[Gina]], a reaction probably made stronger for her because Cally herself survived an [[Bastille Day|attempted rape]].
*Cally pleads with [[William Adama|Commander Adama]] to do something about the incident where Chief Tyrol and [[Helo]] are arrested by ''Pegasus'' command for the death of an officer that attempted to rape [[Sharon Agathon|Caprica-Valerii]].
*After Commander Adama visits the hangar deck to confer with [[Laird]] on the status of the preparations for the [[Battle of the Resurrection Ship|planned attack]], Adama takes Cally aside and questions her about Laird. Cally reveals Laird's origins that enforce Adama's increasing suspicions about ''Pegasus'' commander, Admiral [[Helena Cain]].
*Cally and Chief Tyrol later discover sabotaged Viper ammo by the Cylon-sympathizer [[Demand Peace]] movement ([[Epiphanies]]) as well as a storage crate with a [[Rya Kibby|stowaway]] inside ([[The Captain's Hand]]).
*Cally wakes a sleeping Chief Tyrol up while he was in the midst of a suicidal nightmare. The delusional Tyrol gives Cally a savage beating, quickly pummeling her into a bloody mess and knocking her unconscious. After a moment, Tyrol comes to his senses, shocked by what he had just done, and takes Cally to sickbay, carrying her in his arms ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).
*Cally's jaw is wired shut to heal, but she forgives Tyrol and says she always cared about him. Interestingly, her feelings for Tyrol were apparently known to [[Cavil]] prior to his exposure as a humanoid Cylon ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]).

==On New Caprica==

A year later on [[New Caprica]], Cally is married to Tyrol (taking his surname) and is pregnant with his child ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). Their son, [[Nicholas Tyrol|Nicholas]] (named after her grandfather), is born and lives with the couple as of the 67th day of the New Caprica occupation by the Cylons ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance#Episode 1|The Resistance, Episode 1]]). Knowing her husband's test of faith after discovering that Brother [[Cavil]] was a humanoid Cylon, Tyrol is pleased for plans of a [[dedication ceremony]] for her new son ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance|The Resistance, Episode 4]]).

Following suicide attacks by the insurgency led in part by her husband, Cally Tyrol is picked up by members of the [[New Caprica Police]] in a night-time raid. [[Jammer]], in his role with the NCP, discovers that she has been earmarked for execution, and asks [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] to save her life. Boomer remarks that she does not know what she can do, as internal security is under the proviso of a different ministry. Cally angrily tells Boomer to "go away and leave us alone" if she can't help her ([[Precipice]]).

Jammer later cuts her bonds and allows her to escape from the detention group slated for execution in a remote location. Chief Tyrol, arriving with a resistance sniper team, pushes his running wife out of the resistance's line of fire as they destroy the [[Cylon Centurion]] firing squad. She and her son currently hide in the resistance's underground bunker ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

==After New Caprica==

Cally Tyrol and her family are [[Exodus, Part II|evacuated]] along with most of the human population of [[New Caprica]]. She is next seen resting on a bunk with her son in a room overcrowded with refugees. Her husband visits her after he and the [[Circle]] secretly execute [[Jammer]] for having collaborated with the Cylons. Before his death, Jammer tells Galen Tyrol that he saved Cally on the planet. Tyrol inquires as to how she escaped the execution and if anyone helped her, and she replies that [[New Caprica Police|"one of these goons"]] set her free. She asks her husband how he knows about that, apparently unaware of his role in The Circle ([[Collaborators]]). Later she is working alongside Chief Tyrol on the hangar deck again. It is unknown specifically who babysits their son Nicholas when both parents are working ([[Torn]]), but formal daycare arrangements seems to have been established for families with dependent children ([[A Day In The Life]]) that the Tyrols use. She attends the ship-wide boxing match with her husband and son and watches from the sidelines as her husband fights and defeats Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] ([[Unfinished Business]]). She is recovering from [[w:Decompression sickness|decompression sickness]] injuries sustained in an explosive decompression incident while being rescued from a depressurizing airlock along with her husband ([[A Day In The Life]]).

==Death==

Cally's relationship with her husband deteriorates as he becomes consumed with his discovery, unknown to her, that he is a Cylon. She grows angry at his constant absence, some of which is due to his meeting with fellow Cylons [[Tory Foster|Foster]], [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], and [[Samuel Anders|Anders]]. Moreover, she develops a sleeping disorder and becomes reliant on medication. Awakening one night to find him out of bed and out of their quarters, she finds him in [[Joe's bar]] with Foster and witnesses Foster making a pass at him. Cally confronts him in a rage, assuming that he is having an affair.

Later, she finds a note in their cabin with instructions for a time and place for a meeting. Thinking that is a note from Foster, she goes to the place of the rendezvous, only to discover her husband, Tigh, and Foster going into a weapons locker together and closing the hatch. She opens a panel in the corridor and squeezes into a crawlspace where she can hear what her husband and the others are saying. To her horror, she discovers that her husband is a Cylon. She makes a noise, which the others hear. In her flight from the crawlspace, Cally leaves the wall panel ajar, which Foster discovers. When Galen returns to their cabin, she knocks him unconscious with a heavy wrench and then takes [[Nicholas Tyrol|Nicky]] to the [[hangar deck]], intending to commit murder-suicide by expelling him and herself out a Viper [[launch tube]]. Before she can do so, Foster shows up, convinces her to stop, and then offers to carry Nicky. As soon as Cally turns her son over, however, Foster knocks her down and takes Nicky into the control room, from which she expels Cally into space. The scene ends with a final shot of Cally's frozen, dead face drifting in space, thus becoming a popsi-cally.([[The Ties That Bind]]).

==Notes==
*Cally's full name was not known during the first 2 seasons of the series (even though she is a character that has appeared since the opening minutes of the Miniseries), and during this entire time was known simply as "Cally". It was unknown then whether "Cally" was her given name or her surname; many assumed it was her surname and referred to her as "Specialist Cally" (in "[[The Farm]]", Chief Tyrol referred to her as "Specialist Cally"). However, actress Nicki Clyne, who plays Cally, has said she always thought of it as her character's given name. Her full maiden name, "Cally Henderson", won't appear until Season 3, when labeled on props such as her locker, etc. She took on Chief [[Galen Tyrol]]'s surname after marrying him according to the events shown at the end of season 2.

*The [[Miniseries]] novelization (which is treated as a [[Battlestar Wiki:Separate continuity|separate continuity]] source) gives her full name as "[[Jane Cally]]". However this was made up without the input of the BSG writing team, who later decided that Cally was actually her ''first'' name.

*According to [[Ronald D. Moore]]'s blog, Henderson's term of required service ended at the same time that ''Galactica'' was to be decomissioned. She was about to be honorably discharged and return to civilian life when the Cylons attacked, ending those plans.

*In the DVD commentary for "[[Bastille Day]]", David Eick and Ron D. Moore elaborate on the increased role of Cally as the series progressed from the Miniseries through season 2:

:Eick: Nicki Clyne, who you see here playing Cally, was somebody who in the Miniseries, I remember Michael (Rymer) and I cast just on the basis of her look, 'cause we thought she was really cute, she kind of reminded us of a young [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001167/ Shelley Duvall]. [...] she turned out to be so good that we— in launching the series we started talking about ways to involve her and I'm very proud of a moment coming up where she does something rather nasty, that...
:RDM: Well she almost died! '''She was gonna die in the intial drafts of this'''.
:Eick: That's right! He kills her! He rapes and kills her! And they're telling us we're too dark ''this'' year.
:RDM: Oh, I know. The second season is so much darker. And I don't think they even care. Yeah, Cally, Nicki, I hate to tell ya, but the bullseye was on Nicki here. And I can't even tell you why we decided it was, no I take that back I think it was your note; you said you wanted Cally to fight back and really show some balls in this scene. She bit his ear off...
:Eick: I said, "She bites his frakking ear off" and I was totally being...you know, just ''illustrative''! I didn't really mean it!
:RDM: And I wrote, "she bites his ear off"!
:Eick: "And I got the draft, and she bites his ear off! I was like "that's great!"
:RDM: '''And from that moment on, I think, she really became part of the show'''. In a real sense, once she had gone through that and survived, and you know Tyrol and the gang come in and see her in the hospital at the end you kind of felt like she is one of the family.
:Eick: Yeah, and she's taken on, in season 2 actually, a much, much, ''much'' more prominent role. You have no idea how prominent a role.
:RDM: Which is really illustrative of the rise and fall of characters. I mean [[Boxey (RDM)|Boxey]] we thought going in was just going to be part of the show, and we just never really got our feet underneath us in terms of his storyline and really how it fit into it, and Cally who's just this 'other mechanic' at the beginning, who's just hanging around with Tyrol becomes a key element and part of the fabric of the show itself.
*In the DVD commentary for "Bastille Day", RDM revealed how he came up with names for deckhands Cally, [[Socinus]], and [[Prosna]]: "They were all names I pulled out of an 'ancient names internet site'. I literally, I found something on the internet that would give me like 'ancient names', I went through it and found ''those'' names. It was like ancient Greek and Roman...somethings. They might be, for all I know they're names for utensils, or something like that..."
**"Calli" is a word from ancient Greek, meaning "beautiful".
