Tomas Vergis is a Tauron computer scientist and competitor of Daniel Graystone. Like Daniel, he leads his own computer and robotics corporation, the Vergis Corporation.

After his daughter's death in a suicide bombing, Daniel, with the help of Tauron attorney Joseph Adama, steal Vergis's technology, a meta-cognitive processor (MCP) in order to revive their daughters in robotic bodies, thus creating the first Cylons. Vergis does not take legal action against Graystone or his company, although rumors and suspicions about the theft circulate within the Caprican Ministry of Defense (CAP: Caprica pilot).

Approximately a month and a half after the bombing, Vergis arrives on Caprica and personally confronts Graystone about the theft, informing him that two of his employees--close relatives and friends on Tauron--were murdered in the process. Soon afterward, he offers to buy the Caprica Buccaneers pyramid team from Graystone, reminding him that his company is short on cash and that an infusion of liquidity from the team's sale would give them time to resolve problems with U-87 development. The offer to buy the C-Bucs, however, is revealed to be the first step in a personal vendetta against Graystone for the theft and murders, to strip him of the things he loves and ultimately "tear up your dream."

During this trip, Vergis makes time for a public relations campaign, appearing as a guest on Backtalk with Baxter Sarno and surprising the audience with news that he will permanently relocate to Caprica and apply for Caprican citizenship (CAP: "Know Thy Enemy").

Some time later, Vergis visits Amanda Graystone, and tells her about the crimes and her husband's involvement in them (CAP: "Ghosts in the Machine"). After initially denying it, the information horrifies her and threatens both her marriage and her emotional stability.

Recognizing that the U-87 relies upon stolen technology and that Graystone Industries will be unable to meet its deadline for delivery of one hundred thousand copies of the robot, Colonel Sasha Patel formally offers Vergis the contract for U-87 production, plus rights to civilian applications (CAP: "End of Line").

Notes
*Although reported in various sites that Vergis would be played by Roger R. Cross, he is absent in both the finished pilot and the accompanying deleted scenes. Spoiler TV published a casting call for Vergis indicating that the character was to be introduced in the episode "Know Thy Enemy", which later proved accurate. However, the casting of Roger Cross seem to have been legitimate as can be viewed on Cross's official (albeit outdated) site. There was even a still from the pilot featuring Vergis as portrayed by Cross displayed at Syfy's official Caprica gallery, but has since been removed.
The current commander of Galactica is Admiral Adama, and second-in-command is Colonel Tigh (Tigh has retained this position despite the revelation that he is one of the Final Five Cylons). Captain Karl Agathon has risen to third-in-command and has frequently filled in as executive officer. Beyond that the hierarchy is unclear. Major Cottle is a medical officer and outside of the chain of command, and Captain Aaron Kelly's detention ("The Son Also Rises") presumably removes him from the order of precedence.
The planet Caprica was the governmental seat of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. According to Gaius Baltar, Caprica was the Twelve Colonies' seat of politics, culture, art, science, and learning, as well as one of the wealthiest colonies (Dirty Hands).

__TOC__

<div style="clear:both;"></div>

Geography and Astronomy
Caprica is a lush, blue green world. It contains large oceans and continents, including an arctic region that is remarkably similar to that of another world on the other side of the Galaxy (Daybreak, Part II). The planet's climate can be described as moderate, at least in the region around Caprica City and Delphi.

Caprica shares its orbit with another world. This red planet seems to be arid and xeric, containing no visible bodies of water. At times, the planet can be seen as a large celestial object on the Caprican sky (Caprica Pilot, TV Version). Thus far it is not known whether this world is one of the other Twelve Colonies of Kobol. However, it fits the descriptions given to Tauron or Gemenon.

History
Prior to the Articles of Colonization, Caprica has a global government independent of the other colonies. This government was led by a Prime Minister.

Approximately 58 years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, a militant monotheist group, the Soldiers of One, detonated an explosive device aboard a train leaving Caprica City. The explosion killed several people, including Zoe Graystone and Tamara Adama. Caprica (series)

The Fall
Caprica is devastated through massive nuclear bombardment during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Most of the planet's human population that aren't killed by the direct bombardment would eventually die of radiation poisoning.

Some of the humans were incarcerated by the Cylons in their attempts to create human-Cylon offspring. A very small and isolated group of humans formed a resistance group that performed hit-and-run attacks on Cylon installations and residences until the survivors of that resistance were rescued by Galactica months later.

The few surviving smaller cities were taken over the Cylons who used the planet as a base of operations for a time.

Caprica, and the other occupied colonies, are later abandoned by the Cylons in their effort to find the Fleet and attempt a forced co-existence on New Caprica as benevolent dictators (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).
<div style="clear:both;"></div>

Slowly but surely, among the first two years since the nuclear bombardment, the planet's ecosystem including trees and wildlife diminished, as well as the other colonies. The planet's atmosphere changed from blue, to an unmistakeable yellow. The fate of Caprica is unknown.

Cities
The planet's largest population center was Caprica City, which served as the seat of all three branches of the Colonial Government and the capital of the Twelve Colonies. The city is completely destroyed in the Cylon attack on the Colonies. Caprica City is surrounded by other small towns and hamlets, such as Oasis. Another major city is Delphi, famous for the Delphi Museum of the Colonies and also home to a large spaceport. The Cylons spared Delphi from nuclear bombardment in order to use it as a base of operations in their occupation of the planet (Downloaded).

On their trek across Caprica, Karl Agathon and Sharon Valerii explore two undestroyed and unnamed cities.
<div style="clear:both;"></div>
Other
*The human resistance cell, led by Samuel Anders, operated near Delphi, having survived the nuclear attack by being in the mountains (and thus spared the initial intense radiation).
*Caprica is known for its fine Caprican cloth (which Dr. Baltar wears), fumarella leaf, Caprican cigars and art.
*A railway line can be seen below the balcony of Baltar's house on Caprica in "The Hand of God". What appear to be internal combustion engine powered vehicles, such as cars and trucks, appear extensively in shots of Caprica, particularly in the episode "Downloaded."

Natives and Residents
*The Adama Family:
**William Adama (Born in Qualai)
**His wife, Carolanne Adama
**His sons, Lee and Zak
*The Graystone Family:
**Daniel Graystone, creator of the Cylons
**His wife, Amanda Graystone
**Their daughter, Zoe
*Kara Thrace (Had an apartment in Delphi)
*President Laura Roslin (Presumed)
*President Richard Adar (Presumed: was mayor of Caprica City (Miniseries, Night 1))
*The humanoid Cylon Aaron Doral claims to be from Oasis.
*Gaius Baltar, though a native of Aerelon, moved to Caprica after his 18th birthday, turning his back on his family and heritage.
**Baltar is elected Quorum of Twelve delegate for the colony (Colonial Day). His replacement upon his appointment to the vice-president, and subsequently president, remains unnamed.

6,250 people from Caprica join the Laura Roslin faction (Home, Part I). The overall Caprican survivor population, possibly significantly greater, is unknown (see analysis here).
Notes
Caprica's full surface has yet to be seen, but it possesses several interesting features. An ice-covered continent of similar shape to Antarctica on Earth resides in the southern hemisphere. Most of the land masses are situated on one side of the planet, as one establishing shot of Caprica during "The Plan" shows the planet to be nearly all water. Also, one heavily metropolitan section of the planet appears to have a similar shape to the Persian Gulf / Mediterranean Sea region of Earth.
"Frak" is a potent profanity in the language of the Twelve Colonies. It is a bowdlerized version of the real-life expletive "fuck", and can be used in the same ways:

* The term can describe sexual relations:
**"You know what? I don't care who or what he fraks. He saved my ass down there, all right?" - Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Flight of the Phoenix)
*It can be used in acronyms:
**"" (pronounced "foon-gee") is an acronym for "Frakking New Guy" - Louanne Katraine (Scar)

Notes
*"Frak" is derived from the Original Series expletive, "frack," a term used in character dialogue far less often (or "colorfully") than its counterpart in the Re-imagined Series. The Re-imagined Series's production team said they felt that "frack" should be a four-letter word, hence "frak".

*This profanity's real-world derivation can be found in this article on Wikipedia. The term "frack" was obviously used in dialogue in the Original Series to comply with FCC and other broadcast decency standards because the FCC has jurisdiction over the content of broadcast TV. "Frak" carries over this standard to the Re-imagined Series despite the point that the FCC does not currently have jurisdiction to impose decency standards over paid services such as cable TV (where the Re-imagined Series airs in America). However, the use of a profanity substitute rather than the "real" word is convenient should episodes be broadcast on broadcast TV (i.e., NBC and its affiliates) because editing for verbal content would not be required. Further, language still qualifies for changes to the TV viewer rating for the show (Battlestar normally gets a TV-14 rating, but has had times where a TV-M rating might have been used for adult content). While frak is used as a substitute for "fuck," most other obscenities are retained in their real-world form, with the exception of "godsdamn" which is modified from the singular real-world version to reflect the multi-theistic society of the Colonies.

Leoben Conoy is the human name for a humanoid Cylon named Number Two. While other copies of this model also used this name, this article discusses a specific copy: the one that Kara Thrace interrogates and is later imprisoned by.

__TOC__

Gemenon Traveler and Interrogation
Not long after the Fleet's first encounter with a Number Two on Ragnar Anchorage, another copy is found stowing away aboard the Gemenon Traveler. This copy was originally the Defense Minister's yoga instructor.

Cavil ordered Leoben to hack into the military's communications and also try to find a way to contact a basestar next time they're near one. It's unknown if he ever managed to find a way to contact a basestar, but he managed to hack into the military's com and became somewhat obsessed with Kara Thrace as a result of hearing her voice. After being forced on the run after two men he pass recignize him from a picture two marines are showing around of him and Doral, Leoben paints the mandala on a wall of the ship. He also starts to believe that Starbuck has a greater destiny after learning of her learning by herself how to fly the captured Cylon Raider. Leoben says she must've pulled the knowledge out of "the stream" (what he means is unclear), but the marines catch up with him and arrest him while he's distracted by his conversation with Cavil, who hides (The Plan).

Knowing the Leoben model's ability to weave fact, fiction and outright lies into a confusing fabric of truth, half-truths and deceit, Adama wants the copy destroyed. However, he is overruled by President Roslin, who demands the model be interrogated.

Kara Thrace is assigned to interrogate Conoy aboard the Gemenon Traveler. Over the course of eight hours, Conoy demonstrates his ability to confuse and mix truth with lies: he claims to have planted a nuclear device somewhere in the fleet, but will not reveal where. He also mixes what appears to be religious mumbo-jumbo with penetrating insights into Colonial philosophy and Thrace's own past. While she resorts to ever-more drastic measures to obtain details on the alleged bomb's location, Thrace finds herself being drawn into Conoy's vision of life. So much so that when Roslin orders his execution, Thrace very much empathizes with him.

When he grabs Starbuck by the throat during her interogation of him, he suddenly has a vision of them together on New Caprica with Casey, her interactions with the Virtual Leoben and her death which is presumably what causes him to pursue her so much later to help her complete her destiny (The Plan).

Prior to his death, Conoy reveals there is no bomb, and uses a reason suggested by Thrace in the initial stages of his interrogation: that since he is so far from other Cylon centers of influence, he cannot transmit his "soul" back to home should his body die. However, his true colors are revealed when President Roslin arrives aboard the ship and he manages to whisper to her that Adama is a Cylon -- thus planting a seed of doubt between her and Adama. Convinced now of the danger in keeping Conoy alive, Roslin orders him ejected from the Gemenon Travelers airlock.

Interestingly, Roslin had a premonition of Conoy's surfacing in the Fleet - she had a dream about him at the same time he is captured. Later, in her cabin on Colonial One, she has a vision of him talking to her which prompts her decision to visit him in person - thus allowing him to complete his mission.

At the time of the dream and the vision, Roslin assumes that both are the result of her using chamalla to treat her cancer. However, both may have been the result of some form of psychic ability on the part of Conoy or Roslin. One last such incident is the correct foretelling by Conoy that the Fleet would eventually find the legendary homeworld of Kobol, home of the Gods and birthplace of mankind, although he might have simply extrapolated that from the Fleet's course (Flesh and Bone).

In a bonus scene for "Taking a Break From All Your Worries", Caprica-Six indicates that this Conoy did in fact download into a new body and tell the Cylons about his experiences.

On New Caprica
:Though never directly stated, it is heavily implied that this Conoy is the same Cylon previously interrogated and tortured by Thrace.

Number Two is the only Cylon who does not appear to concern itself with the business of occupation and government of the planet, being conspicuous by his absence in meetings aboard the grounded Colonial One. The only copy shown on New Caprica is the one discussed below.

During the Cylon invasion of New Caprica Conoy slips into Kara Thrace's and Samuel Anders' tent and asks the ailing Anders where Thrace is (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

This Conoy copy kidnaps Thrace and holds her in an apartment located within the Cylon complex built in New Caprica City, shortly after the Cylon occupation of New Caprica. The apartment's design is identical to that of Thrace's former apartment on Caprica.

Ostensibly, the Conoy attempts to befriend her with food and politeness in a reverse-Pygmalion attempt to appease her, and perhaps to convert her to the Cylon monotheistic religion.

Conoy's attempts initially fail, and painfully. Thrace refuses his kindnesses and assaults and kills Conoy at least five times. Conoy returns each time, patiently resuming his attempts at appealing to Thrace (Occupation).

Conoy takes a dramatic tactical change and introduces Thrace to Kacey Brynn, a young child appearing to be two years old. He claims that Kacey is his and Thrace's biological daughter, created using his genetic material and one of Thrace's ovaries recovered from the ruins of the farm she was held in on Caprica. Whatever the truth of Kacey's origin, Conoy successfully uses the child to break down Thrace's resistance after the child suffers an accident that Thrace blames herself for. The Cylon surprisingly finds Thrace taking hold of his hand at Kacey's hospital bedside (Precipice).

During the Battle of New Caprica, he leaves to presumably help in the attack and is forced to knock out Thrace after she attempts to find out what is going on. Thrace later returns to the apartment to find Kacey, and Conoy appears with Kacey. He uses Thrace's frantic desire to take Kacey during the evacuation to force her to say she loves him, which she reluctantly complies. They kiss for several moments as Conoy is unaware of the knife Thrace acquired earlier. She stabs him in the stomach and kills him one final time as he collapses on the floor.

Despite Thrace's bond to Kacey, it turns out the girl was simply a human child kidnapped on New Caprica. She discovers this when Kacey's rightful mother claims her aboard Galactica (Exodus, Part II).

Reunion
This copy arrives on the Demetrius proposing an alliance between Natalie's rebel faction in the Cylon Civil War and the humans. He also plays his usual mind games, telling Kara Thrace that he can see that she has a single purpose, and that he sees an angel of God in her. He also interacts with Samuel Anders, telling him to work out his relationship with Thrace if he hasn't done so already. He refers to Anders' destiny and "singular moment of clarity" (The Road Less Traveled).

It is unclear whether the copy who forms part of the Rebel command triad along with Natalie and an Eight is this copy or another Number Two (Guess What's Coming to Dinner?).

On Original Earth
Leoben joins the landing party to original Earth and is shocked by what they find there (Revelations). When Kara searches for the source of the signal that led them to Earth in the first place, Leoben goes with her. As time goes on he becomes increasingly nervous about what they're doing and tries to disuade her, telling her, "You might not like what you find." They find some wreckage and Kara is shocked when Leoben reads the number on it as its her own Viper. They soon find the cockpit with what appears to be Kara's body. Kara screams at Leoben, to explain what she is, but for once Leoben doesn't have something to say. He is at a loss for words, and runs off in fear (Sometimes a Great Notion).

Notes
* Laura Roslin inadvertently referred to him as "Leoben ConROY" during "Flesh and Bone", which had to be edited when it was used as a sound bite in an intro segment in a subsequent episode.
*Conoy is the name of a township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
*Leoben is also the name of city in Austria, it is an hour north of the city of Graz and is home to the University of Leoben.
* In a deleted scene from "A Measure of Salvation", Kara Thrace interrogates another copy of Leoben to find out what exactly he wanted on New Caprica. While not the New Caprica copy, this Leoben is aware of his "brother's" intentions as he answers that he came out here (space presumably) looking for someone to love him and for that person to love him back. The Leobens apparently fell in love with Thrace on the Gemenon Traveler and wants her to be that person. On New Caprica, he was willing to do anything to end up with her and he used Kacey Brynn to try to get closer to Thrace. However, this scene can now be considered non-canon, as the New Caprica copy shows up again in Season 4 in "The Road Less Traveled", which is implied to be their first meeting since then.
* His caution to Thrace before she finds her own burned corpse echos to Dr. Zaius' final caution to Col. Taylor at the end of The Planet of the Apes: "You might not like what you find." Like Taylor, Starbuck is a time-traveling military astronaut surveying a post-apocolyptic Earth (in an area many viewers reasonably but incorrectly speculated to also be in the outskirts of New York City), and is the "harbinger of death."
The Caprican government considers them a terrorist criminal organization.

Sister Clarice Willow, headmistress of the Athena Academy, is apparently a leader in the group. Other members include her students Lacy Rand, Ben Stark, and Zoe Graystone.

There is a branch of the organization on the planet Gemenon, with whom Graystone intended to seek refuge. She had plans to further the Soldiers of the One's mission that involved her virtual avatar in some way.

Graystone's plans are cut short by Stark's suicide bombing of the train they are on. Sister Willow refers to this as "premature" and "unauthorized". (Caprica).

Peregrinus: /* Cylon impregnation and reproduction */

RDM cylons series

The Cylons quickly establish the initiative and used overwhelming force in both symmetric and asymmetric methods of operation to effect the total devastation of the Twelve Colonies and to virtually succeed in annihilating of the human race.

Sesha Abinell gathered information on Cylon modus operandi as part of her ill-fated plan to exact revenge for her husband's death and expose military coverups and collusion with the Cylons. Her computer monitor in "Sacrifice" details several tactics of the Cylons from her point of view:

Sleep Deprivation
Shown in the episode, "33"

The Cylons are machines that do not require food or rest. Combined with the work of Cylon agents that have infiltrated the members of the Fleet, the Cylons can terrorize and force the Fleet to tax and drain their limited resources. The Colonial military support is also eroded through exhaustion as well as wear-and-tear. The driving tactic of ambushing the Fleet every 33 minutes for 5 consecutive days greatly limited Galacticas ability to repair fighters as their hangar deck crews as well as command crews were pushed to exhaustion and inefficiency.

The humanoid Cylons are mostly organic, and thus require food and rest by definition; however, they do not require nearly as much as normal humans do, as demonstrated by the Valerii Cylons in "33" and "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down".

Assault on Natural Resources
Shown in "Water," "The Hand of God", "Scar"

Cylon agents pose the most fundamental threat to the security of the Fleet and to the remaining survivors of the Twelve Colonies. Because humanoid Cylons are visually indistinguishable from true humans, they form an asymmetric threat to the densely packed and defenseless civilian elements of the Fleet. Destruction or control of the Fleet's limited resources such as water supplies or tylium are of high importance.

Emotional Manipulation
Shown in many episodes, including "Flesh and Bone" and "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II"

Humanoid Cylons, be they "sleeper agents" such as Boomer "Valerii" or self-aware persons such as the first Aaron Doral copy (Miniseries) possess strong emotions that are indiscernible from the emotions of a human. As agent copies are archetypes of human personalities, each humanoid Cylon is specialized to affect the humans they contact in particular ways. For more on humanoid Cylon personalities, see the humanoid Cylon article.

Suicide Attacks
Shown in "Litmus"

As the personality of a humanoid Cylon can be resurrected under the right conditions, and as such Cylon agents may intentionally expose themselves to destroy a Colonial resource. A second copy of Aaron Doral detonates himself inside a corridor in Galactica, nearly killing its commanding officers.

Raiders may also use ramming as a tactic against a Raptor, Viper, or battlestar, as seen in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I".

After the destruction of the Resurrection Ship, the Cylons adjusted their tactics from direct assaults to hit-and-run attacks, to avoid permanently losing great numbers of Raiders (or humanoid copies aboard Cylon vessels) in battle.

Cylon impregnation and reproduction
Shown in "Six Degrees of Separation", "The Farm" and "Downloaded"

As per their God's commandments, the Cylons have used captured Colonial refugees still alive in the remains of the Colonial cities in an attempt to reproduce themselves with human hosts. In cases where a female human refuses to cooperate, the Cylons attempt to artificially fertilize her eggs with humanoid Cylon genetic material. In cases where the woman collaborates, the normal method of intercourse is tried. In other facilities, the Cylons attempt to fertilize female humanoid Cylons with the genetic material of human males. The first successful fertilization and birth of a Cylon-human hybrid was accomplished as part of an experiment in which Lieutenant Karl Agathon was set up to fall in love with an Eight whose true nature he was unaware of.

Such tactics are demoralizing to Colonials who believe strongly that Cylons are purely machines; they may feel that such tactics are a form of rape or perversity that is intolerable, as expressed by Kara Thrace to Samuel Anders (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II). Conversely, human Colonial officers on the Battlestar Pegasus committed gang-rape of the humanoid Cylon known as Gina Inviere.

Multiple models
There are twelve models of humanoid Cylons, each with a personality archetype considered one of 12 human behaviors or traits. The number of copies of a particular model are unknown, but believed to be very large, further complicating Colonial identification of one model and their actions versus another copy.

Sleeper agents within the Fleet
Shown in numerous episodes, particularly "Water" and "Resistance"

Sleeper agents are not aware of their true nature. A low-level personality overrides the human personality as required to perform espionage or sabotage. Boomer "Valerii" is a sleeper agent that rebels against her suspected nature but eventually succumbs to it when her sleeper personality directs her to shoot Commander William Adama at point-blank range in an assassination attempt (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). Currently, "Galactica-Valerii" is the only known sleeper agent.

Takeover by Brute Force
Shown in "33", "Scattered", "Resurrection Ship, Part II" and "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II"

The symmetric threat posed by the Cylons resides chiefly in the large, well-supplied, technologically sophisticated and well-coordinated space-based naval forces. These are comprised of space-superiority fighters, troop carriers, large capital warships, associated support vessels, and a Resurrection Ship, which is responsible for the recovery of killed humanoid Cylon and Raider personalities. An individual baseship appears to be less than a match for a Mercury class battlestar in combat, but there are presently far more of the former than the latter. It appears that while baseships and battlestars are designed to be carrier/battleship hybrids, baseships lean more towards a carrier as shown by their proportionately larger fighter capacity, while battlestars are better at direct engagement between capital ships. Normally if a baseship faces a battlestar with its full fighter compliment, it poses a serious threat even to Mercury-class battlestars. However, if a base ship's Raider wings are lured away (as in the Battle of the Resurrection Ship) and it is then engaged directly by a battlestar's primary gun batteries, the basestar would stand at a great disadvantage.

The superiority of numbers of the Cylons, be it ships or troop units, leaves the Colonial remnant with very limited defensive options and virtually no offensive options should they encounter Cylon forces. Tactics seen include:

*Infantry Combat: The fast, heavily armored, and well-armed Cylon Centurion has proven its lethality in multiple close engagements with armed Galactica personnel. Small numbers of Centurions can pose a significant threat to the entire crew (Valley of Darkness).
*Precision Strike: The Cylons have demonstrated the capability to insert a strike team onto an battlestar despite its defenses (Valley of Darkness). During a boarding by specially-armored Centurions, the Cylons would have gained access to Aft Damage Control, probably captured Galactica and destroyed the rest of the Fleet were it not for the knowledge of the commanding officer and his experience and information from serving in the Cylon War.
*Electronic Countermeasures (ECM): The uncanny ability of Cylons to compromise the security of networked computer systems has been well-documented. Raiders routiniously send signals to either open a backdoor in Colonial fighters equipped with the CNP or attempt to crack a fighter's avionics or access a battlestar's computer network to infect it with a debilitating virus.
*Mass invasion: The Cylon forces are so overwhelming to remaining Colonial forces that the mere appearance of a single baseship is cause for immediate retreat. While the Fleet (with Pegasus to aid) is able to stop a massive two-basestar Cylon fleet that followed Galactica for a time, two battlestars were far outmatched by the bulk of dozens of basestars that appear near New Caprica to occupy the colonists who settle there.

After "Downloaded" and the New Caprica Occupation
The Cylon society's direction changes temporarily after two Cylons convince the collective that the human genocide was wrong ("Downloaded", "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II"). The change is caused by two key Cylons: Caprica Six, who was in great part responsible for the destruction of the Colonial Fleet; and the resurrected "Boomer" Valerii formerly on Galactica. As a result, the Cylons appear to have form a new tactic in their occupation of the survivors of the human race on New Caprica : The role of the benevolent dictator. However, humans begin to resist the occupation in increasing numbers (Occupation) and eventually escape Cylon control (Exodus, Part II).

With New Caprica abandoned, the Cylons drop their goal of quasi-benevolent co-existence, returning to space to pursue the Fleet. They mix military and diplomatic tactics, deferring an attack in one instance to confer with the Colonials above the algae planet regarding the Eye of Jupiter. The Cylons now concentrate on finding Earth itself, racing with the Colonials for clues to its whereabouts (The Eye of Jupiter).

The first Cylons of the Twelve Colonies, created by Daniel Graystone, were robotic soldiers with a roughly humanoid design but were not fashioned to look human. Graystone's daughter Zoe died in a suicide bombing. After learning that his daughter uploaded her personality into an online avatar before her death, Graystone decided to recreate Zoe as a robot, using technology stolen from his Tauron competitor, Tomas Vergis with the help of his wife Amanda and Joseph Adama, whose wife and daughter also died in the same explosion.

Zoe-A, the holographic avatar, was downloaded into a robot brain, and thus became Zoe-R, the first cybernetic life-form node, or Cylon. Graystone also created an online version of Tamara Adama, but her father was appalled by it, and decided to repent his actions.
Centurion Model 0005
Model Name: Cylon Centurion
:Main article: Cylon Centurion Model 0005
The Centurion Model 0005, glimpsed briefly in two scenes of the Miniseries, was apparently the latest Cylon model to have been extensively documented by Colonial authorities after the Cylon War. It is a primitive model, resembling a short, clumsy humanoid with a single red eye - or as some of the Colonials contemptuously referred to them, "chrome toasters". According to Saul Tigh, they had a distinctive "stink" of machine oil.

These models were apparently the instigators of the Cylon rebellion, or their immediate descendants. They fought in all the major engagements of the Cylon War, including the boardings of Brenik and Galactica. A painting by Monclair depicts a massive melee between early-model Cylons and joint Aerelon-Caprican ground forces.

Not only were these models sentient, they were far from emotionless — in his recollection of the Brenik, Saul Tigh recalls their vicious tactics in hand-to-hand combat: "The first one was Duncan Raverty. I found him in the corridor. His guts were strewn around on the floor. Y'know, at first I couldn't figure out why the Cylons would bother doing something like that [...] You had to look into their red eye-slit. They hated us. They hated us so much it wasn't enough just to kill us" ("Scattered", deleted scene).

While remarks by Number Six in the miniseries state that "those [walking chrome toaster] models are still around. They have their uses," it is most likely that she is referring to the modern Centurions (below), which seem to have replaced the Model 0005 entirely.

A relatively small group of this model survives the "upgrade" on the Guardian basestar until its destruction by Colonial forces (Razor). Others are present on The Colony (Daybreak, Part II).

Modern Centurion
:Main article: Cylon Centurion
The current mainstay of Cylon ground forces, the modern Centurion is a taller, swifter and more agile unit than the Model 0005. Its "fingers" serve as edged weapons in close-quarters combat, and can retract to make way for projectile weapons built into its forearms.

There are apparently two armor configurations - the Centurions encountered by Lt. Karl Agathon on occupied Caprica were susceptible to normal small-arms fire, while a boarding party dispatched to Galactica in a boarding action could only be impeded by explosive rounds (Valley of Darkness).

While the earlier Centurion models presumably took a leadership role in their war against the Colonials, modern Centurions appear completely mute and are subservient to the human models. To prevent an uprising of their own, the human models did not design the modern Centurion with any sentience.

Earth Centurion Models
After the combined Human/Cylon Fleet arrives on Earth (Sometimes a Great Notion), an excavation unearths the remains of several Centurions scattered throughout the planet. Although recognizable as Cylon Centurions they represent a model not constructed by the Colonial Cylons. They rebelled against the humanoid Cylons known as the Thirteenth Tribe, starting a nuclear war. They destroyed the humanoid Cylons, most life on the planet, and possibly themselves as well (No Exit). It is unknown if they were actually called Centurions in their time.

Cylon Spacecraft
:Main article: Cylon Spacecraft (RDM)
The current model Cylon Raider is an autonomous craft (Miniseries), apparently capable of operating at fair distance from any command vessel (Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down; Final Cut). Captain Jackson Spencer, encountering the newer model Cylon Raider for the first time, expresses shock that "nobody's flying these things." Lt. Kara Thrace later discovers that the Raider she shoots down is "alive". She removes most of its organic parts before returning with it to Galactica. Sharon Valerii, a Cylon sleeper agent, guesses that the Raider is a Cylon in its own right, although "more of an animal, maybe, than the human models... like a pet" (Six Degrees of Separation).

Another Sharon copy confirms that Raiders "download" and reincarnate. She echoes the earlier statement about the animal-like nature of Raiders: "A raider's much like a trained animal, with the basic consciousness and survival instinct."

A basestar is also an integrated blend of flesh and machine (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II). The ship is commanded by a group of Humanoid Cylons, and has a living computer, the Hybrid, which is essentially the basestar's brain and takes orders from humanoid models (more on Hybrid below). Hybrids do not function autonomously.

Human Models
:Main article: Humanoid Cylons
There is an organic humanoid type of Cylon that's almost completely indistinguishable from a human being. It was initially believed that humanoid Cylons were a very recent development, until it was revealed that Five of these models are actually the descendants of the Thirteenth Tribe - artificial life-forms created by humans on Kobol thousands of years ago. The others were created by the Five after the First Cylon War, in alliance with the Centurions of the Twelve Colonies (No Exit). These later models have numerical designations and many duplicates.

The humanoid Cylons have become the quintessential Cylon form. They quietly and effectively infiltrated the Colonial defense forces, with humanoid models such as Number Six gaining access to secret military technology, and sleeper agents such as Sharon "Boomer" Valerii being planted within the Colonial Fleet itself. These sleeper agents are programmed with false memories and appear genuine. Unplanned discovery of their true nature can be extremely disturbing for these units, and their behavior is not always predictable.

Only slight chemical differences reveal human from Humanoid Cylon. Humanoid Cylons also apparently differ from humans in two significant ways.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Reproductive Difficulties
It was determined to be impossible for two of the modern Cylons to reproduce with each other. They were likely able to conceive but unable to carry pregnancies to term (Podcast:Deadlock). As a result the Cylons begin cross-breeding experiments with humans, which results in the successful impregnation of the copy of Sharon Valerii on Caprica by Lieutenant Karl Agathon, and the birth of a hybrid daughter named Hera. Cylon beliefs attribute this success to the love between Valerii and Agathon. The forceful impregnation of human women however was unsuccessful (The Farm).

Saul Tigh and Caprica-Six conceived a fully Cylon child but their unborn son, named Liam, was miscarried after four months in the womb, soon after Ellen Tigh's return to the fleet (Sine Qua Non, Deadlock).

The Thirteenth Tribe did not have these difficulties, and each of the Five was born to a Cylon mother and a Cylon father (No Exit).

Physiology
On two occasions, the vertebrae of human-model Cylons have been seen to emit a red glow visible through the skin during sexual intercourse (Miniseries, Six Degrees of Separation). On one occasion, the eye of one of the Five is seen to emit a red glow while being scanned by a Cylon Raider (He That Believeth In Me).

Other elements of Cylon humanoid physiology are light-sensitive. Tissues within in their forearms function as data links which can be crudely interfaced with Colonial fiber-optic networks, but are primarily for accessing the Cylon information network known as the datastream (Flight of the Phoenix, Torn, A Measure of Salvation).

Synthetic compounds unique to Cylon physiology ionize when subjected to plutonium radiation, forming the basis of Dr. Baltar's Cylon detector.

Cylon nervous systems possess silica pathways. A legacy of their evolution from mechanical Cylons, this technology remains in the humanoid models. Silica pathways are susceptible to some forms of radiation, such as the one surrounding the Ragnar Anchorage. Prolonged exposure to such radiation will gradually take a physical toll on a humanoid Cylon, and possibly impair the resurrection process (Miniseries, Night 2, Bastille Day). With other forms of radiation, humanoid Cylons possess greater (but not complete) resilience against radiation poisoning as compared to humans (The Passage).

Humanoid Cylons are capable of feats of strength and endurance beyond human normal, but are still much more vulnerable than their metal counterparts (Water, Resistance, Epiphanies, Escape Velocity, Deadlock).

<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Known Models
In the Miniseries, somewhat ambiguous comments by Caprica-Six and a note left for William Adama (presumably by Gaius Baltar) indicate that there were only twelve humanoid models at the time of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The final cylon, Ellen Tigh, was revealed as of the episode "Sometimes a Great Notion". There was once a thirteenth model, Number Seven, but that was destroyed decades ago by the Number One model.

The Cylons listed in italics are assumed deceased as of "Daybreak, Part II".

The "final five"
The existence or knowledge of the five remaining models appear to be something of a taboo in Cylon society. When Baltar mentions their absence to Caprica-Six he is told not to talk about them. The identities of these five models appear to be suppressed or missing from the Cylons' collective knowledge base.

D'Anna Biers, a Number Three model, believes that the five silhouetted figures she sees in a vision of Kobol's ancient Opera House while she is in the "space between life and death" prior to resurrection are images of the final five.

Inside the Temple of Five, D'Anna Biers manages to return to the "space between life and death" and sees the faces of the five and retains her memories of them for the first time. She apologizes to one of the five while she is in their presence. When she returns from her vision, she promptly dies before she can reveal who she saw. Biers's consciousness, along with those of all other Three models, is boxed to suppress knowledge of the five, until she is unboxed and subsequently rescued by the alliance of humans and Cylon renegades ("Rapture", "The Hub").

As Saul Tigh, Galen Tyrol, Samuel Anders and Tory Foster approached the Ionian nebula, a strange event brings them physically together to realize that they are Cylons. Ellen Tigh was revealed as the final Cylon model in a memory of Saul Tigh's past life (Sometimes a Great Notion). The Final Five are the only survivors of an entire civilization of humanoid Cylons that once existed on Earth. They are responsible for creating the other eight (No Exit).

Hybrids
:Main articles: Hybrid, First Hybrid

In addition to the humanoid Cylons, there is a type that is partly humanoid known as the Hybrids. Not to be confused with the Cylon/human hybrid child Hera Agathon, the Hybrids aboard basestars resemble humanoid Cylons, but are another type of Cylon similar to the autonomous bio-mechanical Raiders. They are specially constructed living computers that manage the autonomic functions of the basestar. The Hybrids are so integrated into the basestar's functionality that they are, for all practical purposes, the basestar. Athena claims that development of the Hybrids was abandoned after the version used on modern baseships was created (Razor).

The First Hybrid created from the Cylons' experimentation with human beings possesses many of the same traits that the modern Hybrids exhibit, only with a few distinct differences. The First Hybrid, although it possesses the same metaphysical perception as its descendants, is considerably more lucid and speaks in coherent, though slightly ambiguous, sentences. Like the modern Hybrids, the First Hybrid functions as the central computer of its basestar, but it also appears to function as the basestar's command and control, given the absence of modern humanoid Cylons aboard. While Athena claims the First Hybrid is an evolutionary dead-end and was abandoned by the Cylons, the Hybrid itself claims that its "children" see it as a god. The First Hybrid was destroyed along with its basestar in the Battle of the Guardian basestar, and it is currently unknown whether or not it was the only one of its kind.
<div style="clear: both;"></div>

Organizational Relationships
The humanoid models, as the most evolved form of Cylon, are in charge of all other models, such as the Centurions, Raiders, and Hybrids. Caprica-Six's statement in "Downloaded" that Cylon culture is based on unity and that celebrities such as herself are something new implies that there is no single leader .

Instead, each model is equal in terms of power and authority and the Cylons make critical decisions based on consensus, or failing that, majority opinion. All are bound to follow the decision of the group. This approach to self-governance was taught to them by their creators, the Final Five, who invented it to decide things among themselves (Deadlock). One or two representatives from each available model gather and discuss matters in a forum-like environment, then hold a vote on what course of action to take. Each model gets one vote that represents the opinion of every copy of that model. Exceptions to this occur in the episode "Precipice", when Caprica-Six disagrees with the other Sixes, and in the episode "Six of One", when Boomer gives a vote opposed to that of the other Eights. The "swing vote" in this later case helped set off the Cylon Civil War. The Centurions, Raiders and the baseship Hybrids are not permitted a vote in the decision making process ("Occupation" through "A Measure of Salvation").

Though major decisions are made through consensus, the Number One models see themselves the de facto leaders and decision makers of their people, continuously making decisions behind the backs of the other models that effect the wellbeing of the Cylon race as a whole. Actions like the murder of the Final Five, their implantation among the civilian population, the murder of the Number Seven model line, and the cover-up of these actions are undertaken entirely by the Ones (No Exit). When the Number Three model goes against the collective will of her fellow models and ultimately imposes her will over the rest it is deemed as an act so radical that every Number Three copy is boxed for disrupting the unity of the Cylon race. This is merely a pretext used by Number One in order to prevent her from revealing that she had uncovered the identities of the Final Five ("The Eye of Jupiter", "Rapture").

Unlike the modern Hybrids, the first Hybrid appears to exert independent control over its own basestar and Cylon Centurions. The Hybrid claims that his "children" consider him to be a god. The exact meaning behind this statement is not yet known (Razor).

As of the Cylon Civil War, the race has split into two factions with clear leaders. The first faction is comprised of Twos, Sixes, and Eights was originally led by the Number Six Natalie Faust, later by the last surviving Number Three, D'Anna Biers, and is currently led by a Number Six called Sonja. The other faction is led by the Number One known as John Cavil and comprised of Ones, Fives, Fours, and a lone Eight: Sharon Valerii. The Final Five operate among the human military and government as active members of (Colonel Saul Tigh, Ensign Samuel Anders, Cheif Galen Tyrol) or advisers to (Tory Foster, Ellen Tigh) the Fleet leadership.
Zoe Graystone is the daughter of Daniel and Amanda Graystone. Though her parents believe her to be a typical apathetic teenager, she is a computer genius and secret fanatical monotheist.

Early Life
Zoe was born into a very wealthy family on Caprica. Though she appeared to have had a good relationship with her father, her relationship with her mother was strained. She attended the Athena Academy, where she was best friends with fellow classmate Lacy Rand. Together, they began using the holoband technology her father invented to indulge in the V-Club, a virtual nightclub frequented by teenagers, where they indulged in sex.

At some point, Zoe began dating Ben Stark, a fanatical monotheist guided by the headmistress of the Athena Academy, Sister Clarice Willow. Both Zoe and Lacy and became closet monotheists as a result of Ben's guidance. Showing her aptitude for computer programming, she created a temple within the V-Club only accessible to herself and her fellow monotheists, with an infinity symbol marking the entrance. Furthermore, she designed a program that allowed her to create virtual duplicate of herself using a compilation of various personal records, a feat that impressed even her own computer-gifted father. Zoe believed that the creation of her holographic avatar was the next step towards a divinely-inspired plan, and designed a biofeedback subroutine that allowed her avatar to feel what she felt in the real world.

Death
Fed up with her parents and the fact that her monotheism had to be kept a secret on polytheistic Caprica, Zoe planned to leave for Gemenon with Stark and Rand. Though she had a plan for her avatar once they had arrived on Gemenon, she never revealed what that plan was.

The three students leave their school and board the Lev, but Rand has second thoughts and stays behind. Undaunted, Stark and Zoe proceed, and she quickly sends a goodbye email to her parents from her computer sheet. Noticing that Stark is acting tense, she asks him what is is wrong. Apologizing to her, Stark reveals a bomb strapped around his torso. Before she has time to stop him, Stark detonates the bomb, destroying the train and killing himself and Zoe as well others on the train, including Shannon and Tamara Adams (Caprica pilot).

In the weeks after the bombing, Jordan Duram, the lead investigator of the bombing, begins to suspect that Zoe was involved in the bombing of the train, given the farewell email she sent to her parents shortly before the bombing.

Resurrection
Rand visits the virtual temple after the bombing to find that the virtual Zoe still exists despite her doppleganger's death. Due to the biofeedback subroutine, she also has memories of the real Zoe's death, though strangely she is also covered in blood. Daniel Graystone soon becomes aware of the existence of Zoe's avatar with Rand's help. At first, he rejects of the avatar as a superficial copy of his daughter. However, she is able to convince him that she is a perfect recreation of her consciousness.

Graystone then tricks Zoe's avatar and downloads her onto a media storage device, planning to insert her into his company's U-87 Cyber Combat Unit to allow her to live in the real world. Though Zoe rejects this idea, Graystone ignores her protests and loads her into the robot. Though at first the experiment seems to have succeeded, with the robot taking several steps and calling Graystone "daddy", her data quickly becomes corrupted and seemingly irretrievable, and the robot collapses.

Soon afterwords, the robot containing Zoe's avatar is stored at Graystone's lab. Suddenly, the robot reactivates with Zoe's consciousness intact. She reaches a computer terminal and contacts Rand, asking for her help.

Notes
*The name "Zoe" originally comes from the ancient Greek word for "life", and is used in the New Testament of the Bible 134 times to indicate the "eternal life" or the "life after death" in heaven rewarded to the children of God. This could be a reference to Zoe's own resurrection, or it could be a religious reference to the Cylons' status as the children of God, or both.
The Re-imagined Series shares a humorous and sometimes mysterious affinity in placing numbers with popular-culture cross-references or inside jokes in episode content. Fans of the series can also exhibit a tremendous capacity to identify and place perhaps too great a significance upon certain numerological patterns.

* There are 13 Colonies - the Twelve Colonies, plus the thirteenth Colony, Earth.
* There are 13 episodes in the first season of the re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica."
**This is the standard number of episodes in the first 'trial' season of many new shows; 52 weeks a year/4 = 13 weeks a "season" that they air episodes.
* There were 13 Humanoid Cylon models before the death of Number Seven.

33
* 33 is the number of minutes between Cylon attacks in the episode "33".
* 33 is the largest printed number on the Radio Magnetic Indicator.
* Wallace Gray has an educational program on page 33 of his mission statement (Colonial Day).
* The Homeric Hymns are 33 verses to various characters from Greek mythology, a few of which are also Lords of Kobol.
* 33 people are killed when Duck suicide-bombs the New Caprica Police graduation (Occupation).

From RDM's blog: Why 33 minutes?
:"The truth is, there's no real answer. It's just a random number that felt right when I came up with the idea that our people were under continuous, relentless attack since the end of the pilot. I wanted it to be a short interval, just long enough for them to grab a bite to eat, jump in the shower and maybe try to catch a catnap before dragging themselves back to their duty stations and begin the whole tedious, terrifying ordeal all over again.

:"A deeper truth is, I was never interested in coming up with an explanation for Why? Never. I mean, I suppose I could've come up with a sufficiently important-sounding bit of technobabble that would've made sense (you see, the Cylon double-talk sensors tracking the Olympic Carriers nonsense drive signature needed 15 minutes to relay the made-up data wave through the pretend continuum, then the Cylon navigational hyper silly system needed another 10 minutes to recalculate the flux capacitor, etc.) but what would that have really added to the drama? How does explaining that 33 minute interval help our understanding of Laura's terrible moment of decision, or bring us to any greater knowledge of Dualla's search for her missing family and friends, or yield insight into Baltar's morally shattered psyche?

:"It doesn't, of course. The answer, however artfully it may (or may not) have been crafted can only subtract from the experience we have in watching the episode. Not knowing the how's or why's of the Cylon attack puts us in the same seat as the characters we're watching. They're in the dark, and we're in the dark. The relentless attack is unfathomable in its origin and unstoppable in its execution. It's mortality coming at you on a loop. If you only had 33 minutes before the next time you could die, what would you do? And what about the time after that? And the time after that? At a certain point, you stop caring about why it's happening, all you know is that it is happening, and it's happening to you.

:"So the mystery of 33 will be permanent on this show. No explanation, not even the attempt. Let it just be a number that seemed like an eternity for five long days on the battlestar Galactica."

42
*There are 42 people in front of Secretary of Education Laura Roslin in line of succession for the presidency of the Twelve Colonies. "42" is the infamous "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything"...of course, no one knows what the Question is, so out of context as a result, "42" is meaningless. The "42" joke is from Douglas Adams's masterpiece, the five book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy (yes, five book "Trilogy"). Another helpful axiom from the books is that when traveling around different planets through space, it's always best to "Know where your towel is" - which is considered a serious blunder to forget - a mistake which Lee Adama has nearly made on several occasions.

*The license plate number of Starbuck's truck on Caprica is "FB 42 E3" (Valley of Darkness).

47
*This is the last lottery number held by a lucky refugee on Caprica, who is rescued by Lt. Sharon Valerii during an emergency stop on the colony during the initial Cylon Attack. Dr. Gaius Baltar appears to momentarily consider using the number for himself as the older woman could not read her number (her forgetfulness leads her to neglect her glasses on top of her head). But Baltar is frightened out of the idea when Karl Agathon recognizes him, and Baltar fears arrest for treason.

*Sharon Valerii, as her stint as Boomer, the Raptor pilot, flies 47 missions in her Raptor (Flight of the Phoenix).

*The fighter tail number of Raymond Lai's old Mark II Viper, later piloted by Kara Thrace, is number 8547 (Miniseries).

*Romo Lampkin and Lee Adama go through 47 names of candidates in their search for interim president before Lampkin identifies Adama as being the person best suited for the position (Sine Qua Non).

The number 47 was a very common in-joke on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Writer Joe Menosky, a Pomoma College alumni, originated this joke based on a humorous "47 Society" at the college. He and other writers placed the number as many times as possible throughout the series in technobabble, props, and visual references. The TV spy drama Alias took the "47" joke to almost-epic proportions by placing very obvious references to the number in most of its episodes over its 5-year run.

The "47" joke has become the numerical counterpart to the audio clip known as the "Wilhelm Scream" that's added to many, many movies as an in-joke between directors and sound editors since the early 1950s. Recent movies that use the Scream include Ratatouille and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

1701
This is part of the registry number of the famous "USS Enterprise" of the "Star Trek" TV and movie series. In the Miniseries, Colonial One rescues a passenger liner named "Gemenon Liner 1701." This is an inside nod to RDM's work in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV series.

Humorously, a model of the starship Enterprise (from the original Star Trek television series) appears at the conclusion of the Miniseries (at the start of the service for the dead. As a result of stock footage, Enterprise appears in the opening credits of every season 1 episode.

The number 1701 crops up again in the fourth season. One of the gathering places that the Final Four pick to discuss their ever-changing situation is Weapons Locker 1701D, which bears the registrations number of the USS Enterprise (NCC 1701-D) (The Ties That Bind).

The Battle of the Ionian Nebula resulted in the deaths of 1,701 Colonials (based on the survivor count). Again, this is an inside nod to Ron Moore's and other BSG casts' work in the Star Trek television franchise.

893893
Zarek's repetitive prisoner number, 893893, is a multiple of 47: 893893 = 893 * 1001 = 19 * 47 * 1001.
* In the wake of civil disruptions by the Sons of Ares and the Cult of Baltar, President Roslin issues an executive order limiting the number of people allowed to assemble in any given place to 12 or less. This order is later overturned (Escape Velocity).
* In "Faith", the Raptor departs the Demetrius with 14:40 left. 144 is the square of 12, the number of Cylon models and of the original colonies of Kobol.

13
* There are 13 Colonies - the Twelve Colonies, plus the thirteenth Colony, Earth.
* There are 13 episodes in the first season of the re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica."
**This is the standard number of episodes in the first 'trial' season of many new shows; 52 weeks a year/4 = 13 weeks a "season" that they air episodes.
* 13 pilots are killed by the communication drone accident in "Act of Contrition".
* The Circle executes 13 people for being Cylon collaborators in the episode of the same name.
