While the article is informative, it's voiced "out-of-universe" and so reads more like a behind-the-scenes article of props than a description of what the weapon might be able to do based on its real-world counterpart or on-screen action. When I run into articles like this, I usually use a References section to move the behind-the-scenes comments or sources out of the way of the main text so that article reads better. That may be oversimplifying just a tad, but ultimately most of the notability of the small arms is the fact that they use some (particular) real world weapons (or at least props that look like real world weapons). Should there be a split between a "Small arms" article and a "behind the scenes" category "Weapons used in the Series" type article? Maybe enough to warrant an own sub-article in addition to the other props. A way to seperate the "real-world" information a bit could be to create a "behind the scenes" tag like "silly" and "seperate continuity".

== standard pistol picture requested ==

Does anyone have a really good picture of the standard Colonial pistol? Preferably the Miniseries/early Season 2 version, that was based on a revolver, before they switched to the FN Five-SeveN. I think it's the most "iconic" weapon on BSG and would be a good picture for the general weapons article too. I know there are pics out there of just the weapon, not really screencaps (and not even fan replicas). But the best I could find, is from "Fragged" where Crashdown threatens Cally and Tyrols fires at the Centurions. == Ammo analysis ==

Should we have a section about the various types of ammunition used by small arms? I'm asking because ammo in various episodes have different effects. For example, the explosive rounds in "Valley of Darkness", which might be 12 gauge flares, are only powerful enough to destroy a Centurion's head, while in "Home, part One" a 12 gauge explosive round from the Protecta shotgun causes a large explosion that totally destroys the Centurion. Also Helo's pistol rounds during the restaurant fight scene, which went straight through the Centurion's head and the round he fired in the Miniseries, which have never been seen again.

If you want to add something about the ammunition you should put it here: [[Weapons in the Re-imagined Series#Handheld weapons]], because it's strictly in-universe. Though some of what you describe is the result of different Centurion armor. The ones who boarded the ship had heavier armor and thus needed explosive rounds. Thanks for that, Panther. I had a look at the URL you posted up and I found it very interesting, especially in regards to the kind of stuff that can be used to modify both the Remington Model 700 bolt-action rifle and the Remington Model 7600/7615 series pump-action rifles (most of the gear for the Model 7600 and Model 7615 are legal in Australia). In fact, I might refer that URL to the my mates over on the Australian section of AssaultWeb.Net.

:On another note, Panther. Did you look at the Choate Ultimate Sniper rifle stock that was used on the rifle in "Resistance"? From a closer look at the stock, it appears that the stock was modified to allow the use of detachable rifle magazines - something which is not commonly seen on the rifle stocks Choate Machine and Tool makes. ::To be honest, I have not seen the episode in a while. I also don't know much about that stock because I haven't had a chance to play with one. One thing that is for sure is that that any stock for a Rem 700 has to leave an opening for the magazine floor-plate. Not much description has been given about the small arms that are used in the Re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'', but nearly all of the firearms that the Colonial forces carry are real weapons, either used without modifications or slightly changed to make them less recognizable.

==Handguns==

The standard-issue Colonial sidearm (introduced in the [[Miniseries]]) is according to Ron Moore's commentary an excact replica of the (fictional) sidearm used in the movie ''[[Wikipedia:Blade Runner|Blade Runner]]'' (also starring [[Edward James Olmos]]). The standard service handgun used by the Colonial forces appears to be a modernized version of the [[Wikipedia:LeMat|LeMat revolver]] of the US Civil War, with a revolver-like pistol grip and a large barrel beneath the primary barrel. From closer examination of the handgun, it appears that the handgun that was in the Miniseries and Season 1 was built around a [[Wikipedia:Smith & Wesson | Smith & Wesson]] K-Frame or L-Frame revolver. This sidearm is nicknamed the "Colonial Clamshell" by a propmaster in David Eick's 18th video blog.

It seems that, starting in the early second season the original sidearms have been nearly completely replaced by the [[Wikipedia:Five-seveN|Fabrique Nationale Five-seveN]], also dressed up with an underbarrel explosive launcher. This changeover allows for real semi-automatic fire and on-screen reloads ([[Home, Part II]]), and makes use of the existing stores of 5.7 x 28 mm (FN P-90) blank ammunition.

The [[Wikipedia:HK P9|Heckler & Koch P9]] is seen, along with an [http://www.weapon.envy.nu/gun/int.html Intratec Cat-9] in "[[Colonial Day]]".

The [http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg54-e.htm Vektor CP1] has also made several appearances ("[[Bastille Day]]", "[[Black Market]]", "[[Sacrifice]]"); this is odd given a safety recall issued in 2000.

Samuel Anders can been seen with the [[Wikipedia:MK23 Mod 0|Heckler & Koch Mark 23]] ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]) and the Israeli [[Wikipedia:Desert Eagle|Desert Eagle]] ([[Downloaded]]).

The Russian-made [[Wikipedia:Makarov PM|Makarov PM]] handgun and the Russian-made Stechkin APS handgun have made an appearance in the Season 2 episode "[[Sacrifice]]".

The [[Stallion]] appears "[[Home, Part II]]". Based on the COP 357 Derringer <ref>{{cite_web|url=http://www.kitsune.addr.com/Firearms/Single-Shot-Pistols/COP_357.htm|title=COP 357 Derringer|date=|accessdate=|last=|first=|format=HTML|language=en}}</ref>, designed as a police off-duty/backup weapon, this four shot derringer fires .357 Magnum rounds. The name "Stallion" may be a production in-joke on the Marushin's model name, "COP 357", whose name is shared in part with the ubiquitous ''Colt'' .357 handgun. This pistol was also used in ''[[Wikipedia:Blade Runner|Blade Runner]]''.

A very slightly disguised Czech [[w:Vz 52 (pistol)|CZ-52 service pistol]] is used by the Cylons on New Caprica. This is the gun that Doral shoots Caprica Six with and threatens Baltar with in "[[Precipice]]". It is also the same gun that Gaeta almost shoots Baltar with in "[[Exodus, Part II]]" and in turn almost shoots D'Anna. The gun was probably chosen for the futuristic "rocketeer" shape and because it is extremely inexpensive as a military surplus collectible. Interestingly this gun is very reliable, extremely accurate and is about as effective at penetrating armor as the FN Five SeveN, which costs about ten times as much.

==Submachine guns==

One of the real firearms that was seen on a regular basis in ''Battlestar Galactica'''s first season is the Belgian [[Wikipedia:FN_P90|Fabrique Nationale P90 submachine gun]] which is seen in the hands of the Colonal security forces and [[Marines]] of ''Galactica''. The weapon is notable for its unusual 5.7x28 round, designed to pierce body armor. Its unusual magazine placement and design (resting on top with rounds perpendicular to the barrel) means each cartridge is rotated 90 degrees as it is fed.

The FN P90 submachine gun has also been seen in other science fiction shows like [[Wikipedia:Stargate SG-1|''Stargate SG-1'']] and [[Wikipedia:Stargate Atlantis|''Stargate Atlantis'']] (which are also filmed in Vancouver alongside ''Battlestar Galactica'').

In season two, the P90 was replaced by a different weapon (see Rifles and Carbines).

Another real-life submachine guns that made an appearance is the German [[Wikipedia:HK UMP|Heckler & Koch UMP]]. In the episode "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", [[Samuel Anders]] is seen armed with one. It has since been seen in use by ''Pegasus'' Marines. Other weapons seen this episode are the Czech [[Wikipedia:Skorpion|Skorpion machine pistol]], wielded akimbo by Starbuck, and the American [[Wikipedia:Ruger MP9|Ruger MP9]] being wielded by Helo when the two characters encounter Samuel Anders and his resistance fighters. 
The Skorpion is also carried by Chief Tyrol during the [[Battle of New Caprica]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The [[Wikipedia:Beretta Model 12|Beretta Model 12]] submachine gun is used by Anders's resistance fighters.

In "[[A Measure of Salvation]]", both Major [[Lee Adama|Adama]] and Gunnery Sergeant [[Erin Mathias|Mathias]] appear to be armed with Heckler & Koch [[Wikipedia:MP7|MP7A1]] Personal Defence Weapons, mounted with ELCAN C79 optical sights. The MP7A1 and C79 sight are further examples of weaponry and equipment seen in ''Stargate SG-1''. Additionally, the fighters on the [[algae planet]], including [[Lee Adama]] and Anders, are equipped with the MP7 and sight combination ([[Rapture]]).

==Shotguns==

Another real firearm seen in the first season of the re-imagined series of ''Battlestar Galactica'' is the American [[Wikipedia:Mossberg 500|Mossberg 500]] pump-action shotgun, specifically a 12-gauge bullpup variant, seen in the episode "[[Bastille Day]]" in the hands of the prisoners on the prison ship ''[[Astral Queen]]'' after they overwhelmed the guards and took control of the ship. None of the bullpup variants are available anymore as of 2006.

The [[Wikipedia:DAO-12|Protecta/Striker shotgun]] is used in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]", "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|Part II]]" and "[[Home]]", although it appears as a grenade launcher. This is the weapon with the drum magazine which Boomer uses to save Apollo's life on Kobol. It is frequently featured in many Hollywood movies due to its distinctive appearance.

A short-barrelled pump action shotgun (which closely resembles the [[Wikipedia:Ithaca 37|Ithaca Model 37 pump-action shotgun]]) with forward pistol grip is used by the bartender in the deleted flashback scenes in "[[Scattered]]".

==Rifles and Carbines==

The British [[Wikipedia:SA-80|SA-80 bullpup assault rifle]] is carried by a Colonial military honor guard at Zak Adama's funeral in "[[Act of Contrition]]". The [[Wikipedia:SA-80|SA-80]] is the current, standard-issue infantry rifle of the British armed forces and has been in British military service since 1985. 
The SA-80s in "Act of Contrition" appear to be without the standard, [[Wikipedia:British Army | British Army]] issue [[Wikipedia: SUSAT | SUSAT]] telescopic sight, and the iron foresight and rear-sight/carry handle are not in use despite the fact that SA-80s without the SUSAT sight are seen with the foresight and rear-sight/carry handle unfolded and in use. In "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]" and "[[The Farm]]", the resistance fighters on Caprica are armed with SA-80s alongside other firearms. The SA-80s used by the resistance fighters in these two episodes appear to have SUSAT sights fitted on the rifles.

The Italian [[Wikipedia:Beretta Cx4 Storm|Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine]] is one of the main small arms the Colonial military uses in the Re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'' with Starbuck using a Cx4 to shoot at [[Tom Zarek]] on the ''Astral Queen'' ([[Bastille Day]]). In "[[Fragged]]", [[Gaius Baltar]], [[Galen Tyrol|Chief Tyrol]], the others stranded on Kobol, and various Colonial Marines throughout the series are armed with them as well. (It is probable that the Cx4 has replaced the P-90 as the standard Colonial longarm in the series's production, most likely due to the P-90s already being well known through their extensive use on ''Stargate SG-1'' and ''Stargate Atlantis'').
The Cx4s that are seen in ''Battlestar Galactica'' are fitted with specially-made accessories which go the length of the exposed barrel. Aside from this, the carbines are fitted with real-life tactical lights and AimPoint Red-Dot scopes.

Besides automatic and semi-automatic rifles, one of the resistance fighters on Caprica in the episode "Resistance" is armed with a bolt-action rifle. From the look of its action, the rifle appears to be an American [[Wikipedia:Remington 700|Remington Model 700]] fitted with a Choate Ultimate Sniper/Target tactical rifle stock and a third-party telescopic sight. It is possible that the bolt-action rifle is a standard-issue Colonial military sniper rifle (possibly [[Colonial Marine Corps]] issue) since Anders and his resistance fighters raided Colonial military armories on Caprica for firearms, ammunition and other weapons to fight the Cylons.

In the episodes "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]" and "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|Part II]]", Starbuck is using a [[Wikipedia:Heckler & Koch G36|Heckler & Koch G36K]] while at the same time, a member of the resistance is using a [[Wikipedia:AK-47|Kalashnikov]]-type rifle. The G36 is, in its standard version, the service rifle of the German Armed Forces and the Spanish Army. The Kalashnikov-type rifle that is seen in the hands of Anders' resistance fighters on Caprica in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" and in a few episodes of Season 3 in the hands of one of the members of the New Caprica Resistance is a Chinese-made, NORINCO Type 84S rifle chambered in 5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington.

In the Miniseries, the Colonial security personnel on ''Galactica'' are armed with a bullpup assault rifle. It bears a resemblance to a short-barreled [[Wikipedia: FAMAS|FAMAS]] with a [[Wikipedia:Picatinny rail|Picatinny rail]] mount. This rifle was actually designed by Masamune Shirow for the ''Dominion: Conflict'' comic series, and is known as the [http://www.poseidon.co.jp/2F/mn-23/mn1.html Seburo MN-23].

The weapon possessed by [[Leoben Conoy]] at Ragnar Station is a fictional variant of the [[Wikipedia:AR-15|AR-15]], known as the Close Quarters Battle Weapon Type Zero, aka the [http://www.poseidon.co.jp/2F/raisen/rai_1.html "Raisen"]. It is a model gun designed by Poseidon Industries of Japan (see link).

Besides the military-issue rifles and carbines that have been seen in Season 2, civilian rifles have made an appearance. One example can be seen in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", when one of Anders' resistance fighters is armed with a semi-automatic, civilian hunting rifle fitted with a telescopic sight. From the look of the rifle, it appears that the rifle is a [http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_7400.asp Remington Model 7400] semi-automatic hunting rifle that had part of the rearsight removed in order for the telescopic sight to be fitted. This rifle may have come from either the hunters or survivalists that were picked up by the resistance after the Cylon attack.

I'm a 23 year old IT student from Australia. My interests include all periods of history (esp. military history), firearms, and geopolitics.

I was hooked by BSG(RDM) in the pilot and have never looked back since. I hang out mostly at the [http://z11.invisionfree.com/Scifi_Straight_Dope Sci-Fi Straight Dope forums] when I'm discussion BSG and other sci-fi worlds.

It's great that I found this Wiki as something like this is needed, a central place when fans can come and find information readily, and information that is accurate.

Does anyone have a really good picture of the standard Colonial pistol? Preferably the Miniseries/early Season 2 version, that was based on a revolver, before they switched to the FN Five-SeveN. I think it's the most "iconic" weapon on BSG and would be a good picture for the general weapons article too. I know there are pics out there of just the weapon, not really screencaps (and not even fan replicas). But the best I could find, is from "Fragged" where Crashdown threatens Cally and Tyrols fires at the Centurions. == Ammo analysis ==

Should we have a section about the various types of ammunition used by small arms? I'm asking because ammo in various episodes have different effects. For example, the explosive rounds in "Valley of Darkness", which might be 12 gauge flares, are only powerful enough to destroy a Centurion's head, while in "Home, part One" a 12 gauge explosive round from the Protecta shotgun causes a large explosion that totally destroys the Centurion. Also Helo's pistol rounds during the restaurant fight scene, which went straight through the Centurion's head and the round he fired in the Miniseries, which have never been seen again.

Though some of what you describe is the result of different Centurion armor. The ones who boarded the ship had heavier armor and thus needed explosive rounds. Not much description has been given about the small arms that are used in the Re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'', but nearly all of the firearms that the Colonial forces carry are real weapons, either used without modifications or slightly changed to make them less recognizable.

==Handguns==

The standard-issue Colonial sidearm (introduced in the [[Miniseries]]) is according to Ron Moore's commentary an excact replica of the (fictional) sidearm used in the movie ''[[Wikipedia:Blade Runner|Blade Runner]]'' (also starring [[Edward James Olmos]]). The standard service handgun used by the Colonial forces appears to be a modernized version of the [[Wikipedia:LeMat|LeMat revolver]] of the US Civil War, with a revolver-like pistol grip and a large barrel beneath the primary barrel. From closer examination of the handgun, it appears that the handgun that was in the Miniseries and Season 1 was built around a [[Wikipedia:Smith & Wesson | Smith & Wesson]] K-Frame or L-Frame revolver. This sidearm is nicknamed the "Colonial Clamshell" by a propmaster in David Eick's 18th video blog.

It seems that, starting in the early second season the original sidearms have been nearly completely replaced by the [[Wikipedia:Five-seveN|Fabrique Nationale Five-seveN]], also dressed up with an underbarrel explosive launcher. This changeover allows for real semi-automatic fire and on-screen reloads ([[Home, Part II]]), and makes use of the existing stores of 5.7 x 28 mm (FN P-90) blank ammunition.

The [[Wikipedia:HK P9|Heckler & Koch P9]] is seen, along with an [http://www.weapon.envy.nu/gun/int.html Intratec Cat-9] in "[[Colonial Day]]".

The [http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg54-e.htm Vektor CP1] has also made several appearances ("[[Bastille Day]]", "[[Black Market]]", "[[Sacrifice]]"); this is odd given a safety recall issued in 2000.

Samuel Anders can been seen with the [[Wikipedia:MK23 Mod 0|Heckler & Koch Mark 23]] ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]) and the Israeli [[Wikipedia:Desert Eagle|Desert Eagle]] ([[Downloaded]]).

The Russian-made [[Wikipedia:Makarov PM|Makarov PM]] handgun and the Russian-made Stechkin APS handgun have made an appearance in the Season 2 episode "[[Sacrifice]]".

The [[Stallion]] appears "[[Home, Part II]]". Based on the COP 357 Derringer <ref>{{cite_web|url=http://www.kitsune.addr.com/Firearms/Single-Shot-Pistols/COP_357.htm|title=COP 357 Derringer|date=|accessdate=|last=|first=|format=HTML|language=en}}</ref>, designed as a police off-duty/backup weapon, this four shot derringer fires .357 Magnum rounds. The name "Stallion" may be a production in-joke on the Marushin's model name, "COP 357", whose name is shared in part with the ubiquitous ''Colt'' .357 handgun. This pistol was also used in ''[[Wikipedia:Blade Runner|Blade Runner]]''.

A very slightly disguised Czech [[w:Vz 52 (pistol)|CZ-52 service pistol]] is used by the Cylons on New Caprica. This is the gun that Doral shoots Caprica Six with and threatens Baltar with in "[[Precipice]]". It is also the same gun that Gaeta almost shoots Baltar with in "[[Exodus, Part II]]" and in turn almost shoots D'Anna. The gun was probably chosen for the futuristic "rocketeer" shape and because it is extremely inexpensive as a military surplus collectible. Interestingly this gun is very reliable, extremely accurate and is about as effective at penetrating armor as the FN Five SeveN, which costs about ten times as much.

==Submachine guns==

One of the real firearms that was seen on a regular basis in ''Battlestar Galactica'''s first season is the Belgian [[Wikipedia:FN_P90|Fabrique Nationale P90 submachine gun]] which is seen in the hands of the Colonal security forces and [[Marines]] of ''Galactica''. The weapon is notable for its unusual 5.7x28 round, designed to pierce body armor. Its unusual magazine placement and design (resting on top with rounds perpendicular to the barrel) means each cartridge is rotated 90 degrees as it is fed.

The FN P90 submachine gun has also been seen in other science fiction shows like [[Wikipedia:Stargate SG-1|''Stargate SG-1'']] and [[Wikipedia:Stargate Atlantis|''Stargate Atlantis'']] (which are also filmed in Vancouver alongside ''Battlestar Galactica'').

In season two, the P90 was replaced by a different weapon (see Rifles and Carbines).

Another real-life submachine guns that made an appearance is the German [[Wikipedia:HK UMP|Heckler & Koch UMP]]. In the episode "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", [[Samuel Anders]] is seen armed with one. It has since been seen in use by ''Pegasus'' Marines. Other weapons seen this episode are the Czech [[Wikipedia:Skorpion|Skorpion machine pistol]], wielded akimbo by Starbuck, and the American [[Wikipedia:Ruger MP9|Ruger MP9]] being wielded by Helo when the two characters encounter Samuel Anders and his resistance fighters. 
The Skorpion is also carried by Chief Tyrol during the [[Battle of New Caprica]] ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

The [[Wikipedia:Beretta Model 12|Beretta Model 12]] submachine gun is used by Anders's resistance fighters.

In "[[A Measure of Salvation]]", both Major [[Lee Adama|Adama]] and Gunnery Sergeant [[Erin Mathias|Mathias]] appear to be armed with Heckler & Koch [[Wikipedia:MP7|MP7A1]] Personal Defence Weapons, mounted with ELCAN C79 optical sights. The MP7A1 and C79 sight are further examples of weaponry and equipment seen in ''Stargate SG-1''. Additionally, the fighters on the [[algae planet]], including [[Lee Adama]] and Anders, are equipped with the MP7 and sight combination ([[Rapture]]).

==Shotguns==

Another real firearm seen in the first season of the re-imagined series of ''Battlestar Galactica'' is the American [[Wikipedia:Mossberg 500|Mossberg 500]] pump-action shotgun, specifically a 12-gauge bullpup variant, seen in the episode "[[Bastille Day]]" in the hands of the prisoners on the prison ship ''[[Astral Queen]]'' after they overwhelmed the guards and took control of the ship. None of the bullpup variants are available anymore as of 2006.

The [[Wikipedia:DAO-12|Protecta/Striker shotgun]] is used in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]", "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|Part II]]" and "[[Home]]", although it appears as a grenade launcher. This is the weapon with the drum magazine which Boomer uses to save Apollo's life on Kobol. It is frequently featured in many Hollywood movies due to its distinctive appearance.

A short-barrelled pump action shotgun (which closely resembles the [[Wikipedia:Ithaca 37|Ithaca Model 37 pump-action shotgun]]) with forward pistol grip is used by the bartender in the deleted flashback scenes in "[[Scattered]]".

==Rifles and Carbines==

The British [[Wikipedia:SA-80|SA-80 bullpup assault rifle]] is carried by a Colonial military honor guard at Zak Adama's funeral in "[[Act of Contrition]]". The [[Wikipedia:SA-80|SA-80]] is the current, standard-issue infantry rifle of the British armed forces and has been in British military service since 1985. 
The SA-80s in "Act of Contrition" appear to be without the standard, [[Wikipedia:British Army | British Army]] issue [[Wikipedia: SUSAT | SUSAT]] telescopic sight, and the iron foresight and rear-sight/carry handle are not in use despite the fact that SA-80s without the SUSAT sight are seen with the foresight and rear-sight/carry handle unfolded and in use. In "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]" and "[[The Farm]]", the resistance fighters on Caprica are armed with SA-80s alongside other firearms. The SA-80s used by the resistance fighters in these two episodes appear to have SUSAT sights fitted on the rifles.

The Italian [[Wikipedia:Beretta Cx4 Storm|Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine]] is one of the main small arms the Colonial military uses in the Re-imagined ''Battlestar Galactica'' with Starbuck using a Cx4 to shoot at [[Tom Zarek]] on the ''Astral Queen'' ([[Bastille Day]]). In "[[Fragged]]", [[Gaius Baltar]], [[Galen Tyrol|Chief Tyrol]], the others stranded on Kobol, and various Colonial Marines throughout the series are armed with them as well. (It is probable that the Cx4 has replaced the P-90 as the standard Colonial longarm in the series's production, most likely due to the P-90s already being well known through their extensive use on ''Stargate SG-1'' and ''Stargate Atlantis'').
The Cx4s that are seen in ''Battlestar Galactica'' are fitted with specially-made accessories which go the length of the exposed barrel. Aside from this, the carbines are fitted with real-life tactical lights and AimPoint Red-Dot scopes.

Besides automatic and semi-automatic rifles, one of the resistance fighters on Caprica in the episode "Resistance" is armed with a bolt-action rifle. From the look of its action, the rifle appears to be an American [[Wikipedia:Remington 700|Remington Model 700]] fitted with a Choate Ultimate Sniper/Target tactical rifle stock and a third-party telescopic sight. It is possible that the bolt-action rifle is a standard-issue Colonial military sniper rifle (possibly [[Colonial Marine Corps]] issue) since Anders and his resistance fighters raided Colonial military armories on Caprica for firearms, ammunition and other weapons to fight the Cylons.

In the episodes "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]" and "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II|Part II]]", Starbuck is using a [[Wikipedia:Heckler & Koch G36|Heckler & Koch G36K]] while at the same time, a member of the resistance is using a [[Wikipedia:AK-47|Kalashnikov]]-type rifle. The G36 is, in its standard version, the service rifle of the German Armed Forces and the Spanish Army. The Kalashnikov-type rifle that is seen in the hands of Anders' resistance fighters on Caprica in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" and in a few episodes of Season 3 in the hands of one of the members of the New Caprica Resistance is a Chinese-made, NORINCO Type 84S rifle chambered in 5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington.

In the Miniseries, the Colonial security personnel on ''Galactica'' are armed with a bullpup assault rifle. It bears a resemblance to a short-barreled [[Wikipedia: FAMAS|FAMAS]] with a [[Wikipedia:Picatinny rail|Picatinny rail]] mount. This rifle was actually designed by Masamune Shirow for the ''Dominion: Conflict'' comic series, and is known as the [http://www.poseidon.co.jp/2F/mn-23/mn1.html Seburo MN-23].

The weapon possessed by [[Leoben Conoy]] at Ragnar Station is a fictional variant of the [[Wikipedia:AR-15|AR-15]], known as the Close Quarters Battle Weapon Type Zero, aka the [http://www.poseidon.co.jp/2F/raisen/rai_1.html "Raisen"]. It is a model gun designed by Poseidon Industries of Japan (see link).

Besides the military-issue rifles and carbines that have been seen in Season 2, civilian rifles have made an appearance. One example can be seen in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", when one of Anders' resistance fighters is armed with a semi-automatic, civilian hunting rifle fitted with a telescopic sight. From the look of the rifle, it appears that the rifle is a [http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_7400.asp Remington Model 7400] semi-automatic hunting rifle that had part of the rearsight removed in order for the telescopic sight to be fitted. This rifle may have come from either the hunters or survivalists that were picked up by the resistance after the Cylon attack.

[[User:Matt72986|Matt72986]] made an interesting, though I think incorrect catch regarding what we think Starbuck has said in the Mini-Series about the Adama's information on the loss of 30 battlestars in the opening hours of the Cylon attack. She says, "That's a quarter of the fleet." From here we've collectively presumed that she spoke only of 30 out of 120 ''battlestars''.

While Matt could be right as there may be other ships, there is one assumption that RDM has not appeared to change from the TOS to the RDM continuity. While there are certainly other kinds of Colonial military vessels, likely designed to carry or deploy troops, or supply other ships, the battlestar is THE battleship/carrier/capital warship of the Fleet. All other ships are deployed to service it, not the reverse (unless an older battlestar supports a more advanced one).

The only other Colonial fleet ships noted in RDM are:
*Variations of the [[Space Park]] (although the one in the ragtag fleet is not military)
*Unidentified ships in the [[Scorpion Fleet Shipyards]] that were destroyed along with 3 other battlestars

Now if I had responded "that's a quarter of the fleet" one could assume I was referring to the fleet of carriers. However, we can't make that assumption in this case because the organization itself happens to have the same name as the military term. So until we know for sure, I think it makes sense to say "ships" in the wiki, because ships could be either something else or Battlestars, so it accounts for both possible meanings of what she said.

If we do the math, a Battlestar is approximately 24 times the volume of an aircraft carrier, so it would require the resources to build about 2592 Nimitz-class carriers (and that's not even counting the more advanced tech a battlestar has over a carrier). Even with 12 worlds working together that seems unlikely, especially given the other expenditures a 12-world government must have.

On this wiki (as with most fiction wikis), POV speculation is allowed IF there is sufficient source material to back it up and if the consensus agrees. Where's this talked about? Shore patrols are usually drawn from Marines of Masters-At-Arms (A Naval Rating) depending on the country of the service. I'd say seeing as the BSG75's MAA is a Marine it's more than likely that the Shore Patrol seen in that episode was actually two Marines on Shore Patrol duty.

Like the Colonial Fleet, the CMC has a Reserve Component ([[Final Cut]]). ''[[Galactica]]'' initially had about thirty marines left, although there are no snipers among them ([[Bastille Day]]). This number increased with the addition of the battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' to the Fleet.

After ''Pegasus'''s [[Battle of New Caprica|destruction]], a number of marines are integrated into ''Galactica's'' crew. During a briefing between Colonel Tigh and Admiral Adama, Tigh says "A hundred Marines too weak to work, two hundred more about to drop", which implies that there are now at least 300 marines, probably accounting for the ''Pegasus'' survivors ([[The Passage]]).

The '''Colonial Marine Corps''' are the ground soldiers of the Twelve Colonies, a different branch of the military than the [[Colonial Fleet]]. As with the CF the CMC has a Reserve Component.[[Galactica type battlestar|Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica]]'' has about thirty of them left, although there are no snipers among them ([[Bastille Day]]).

A Marine's duties include guarding the [[CIC]] and [[brig]] ([[Miniseries]]) and assisting the [[Master-at-Arms]] ([[Litmus]]). They have been used several times on [[Raptors]] for boarding parties ([[Bastille Day]], [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II]], [[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]], [[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). They are also responsible for repelling enemy boarding actions ([[Valley of Darkness]]).

At the time of the [[Cylon attack]] she monitors fleet-wide communications. Dualla is one of the first to notice the unusually-high levels of shipboard malfunctions and failures aboard other battlestars ([[Miniseries]]).

After the Cylon attack, she coordinates Fleet activities like [[FTL|jumps]] with Tactical Officer [[Felix Gaeta]]. In this responsibility, she discovers that the ''[[Olympic Carrier]]'' fails to Jump with the fleet after yet another Jump to escape a 5-day long, relentless attack by the Cylons after their escape from [[Ragnar Anchorage]] ([[33]]).

Due to his attraction to Dualla, presidential aide [[Billy Keikeya]] "volunteers" her to join an off-ship mission to the ''[[Astral Queen]]'' ([[Bastille Day]]). Led by Captain [[Lee Adama]], the mission is to attempt enlistment of prisoners aboard the ''Queen'' in resupplying ''Galactica'' with water following an act of sabotage ([[Water]]). Freed without personal harm during this situation, Dualla returns Billy Keikeya's affections, and they date during off-duty periods ([[Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down]]).

Dualla receives a minor concussion when Cylons board the ship ([[Valley of Darkness]]). Dualla aids in [[Laura Roslin]]'s escape from ''Galactica'' after the President's arrest by covering up the tracks of their secret communications coordinating their movements in the Fleet, and getting Colonel Tigh to sign permission to close off a causeway which they use as an escape route. At this time, Dualla seems to take a greater personal interest in [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Dualla is assigned to give [[D'anna Biers]] a tour around the battlestar as part of Bier's documentary of the ship ([[Final Cut]]). Lee Adama seems to return Dualla's personal attraction during a sparring exercise with the petty officer ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Dualla's [[avionics]] training helps in building a stable communications package for the experimental [[Blackbird]] fighter ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Keikeya, apparently attempting to solidify his relationship with the petty officer, proposes to Dualla, but she refuses. Keikeya later sees Dualla with Lee Adama on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' and accuses her of leading him on. Shortly after Keikeya's accusation, four terrorists commander the lounge and its occupants in exchange for the surrender of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]]. When a ruse by Admiral [[William Adama]] is discovered, the [[Sesha Abinell|leader]] of the the terrorists orders Dualla's death. Keikeya intervenes and manages to shoot the terrorist, but the terrorist fatally wounds Keikeya before dying. Lee Adama is also left severely wounded from a friendly-fire incident during an abortive pre-assault reconnaisance led by [[Kara Thrace]]. Dualla promises to watch over Lee Adama until he recovers in [[sickbay]]. When he finally regained consciousness, Dualla was so happy that neither of them noticed Starbuck leaving the sickbay with a heartbroken expression ([[Sacrifice]]).

A few months later, still involved with Apollo, Dualla assists in the counting of ballots for the Presidential election. Dualla conspires with [[Tory Foster]] and [[Saul Tigh]] to rig the election in Roslins's favor, indicating that she comprehends the disaster that would follow if Baltar is elected. Though the plot initially succeeds, Lt. Gaeta's curiosity leads to Admiral Adama's discovery of the duplicity. Adama covers up the plot but returns the vote, for better or worse, to its actual result, with Baltar being elected to the Presidency.

A year later, Dualla serves as Communications and Executive Officer on ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', part of its skeletal crew in orbit around [[New Caprica]]. Dualla and Lee Adama's relationship appears ongoing, given the look she gives young Adama when Kara Thrace calls in one day. Dualla also fiddles with her ring finger, suggesting that she is now married). Dualla's keen eyes pick up [[DRADIS]] contacts, which gave the Fleet advance warning to the arrival of a large Cylon fleet. The remnants of the Fleet escape, hoping to return to liberate New Caprica another day ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Dualla receives a minor concussion when Cylons board the ship ([[Valley of Darkness]]). Dualla aids in [[Laura Roslin]]'s escape from ''Galactica'' after the President's arrest by covering up the tracks of their secret communications coordinating their movements in the Fleet, and getting Colonel Tigh to sign permission to close off a causeway which they use as an escape route. At this time, Dualla seems to take a greater personal interest in [[Lee Adama|Apollo]] ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Dualla is assigned to give [[D'anna Biers]] a tour around the battlestar as part of Bier's documentary of the ship ([[Final Cut]]). Lee Adama seems to return Dualla's personal attraction during a sparring exercise with the petty officer ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Dualla's [[avionics]] training helps in building a stable communications package for the experimental [[Blackbird]] fighter ([[Flight of the Phoenix]]).

Keikeya, apparently attempting to solidify his relationship with the petty officer, proposes to Dualla, but she refuses. Keikeya later sees Dualla with Lee Adama on ''[[Cloud 9]]'' and accuses her of leading him on. Shortly after Keikeya's accusation, four terrorists commander the lounge and its occupants in exchange for the surrender of [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]]. When a ruse by Admiral [[William Adama]] is discovered, the [[Sesha Abinell|leader]] of the the terrorists orders Dualla's death. Keikeya intervenes and manages to shoot the terrorist, but the terrorist fatally wounds Keikeya before dying. Lee Adama is also left severely wounded from a friendly-fire incident during an abortive assault led by [[Kara Thrace]]. Dualla promises to watch over Lee Adama until he recovers in [[sickbay]]. When he finally regained consciousness, Dualla was so happy that neither of them noticed Starbuck leaving the sickbay with a heartbroken expression ([[Sacrifice]]).

A few months later, still involved with Apollo, Dualla assists in the counting of ballots for the Presidential election. Dualla conspires with [[Tory Foster]] and [[Saul Tigh]] to rig the election in Roslins's favor, indicating that she comprehends the disaster that would follow if Baltar is elected. Though the plot initially succeeds, Lt. Gaeta's curiosity leads to Admiral Adama's discovery of the duplicity. Adama covers up the plot but returns the vote, for better or worse, to its actual result, with Baltar being elected to the Presidency.

A year later, Dualla serves as Communications and Executive Officer on ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'', part of its skeletal crew in orbit around [[New Caprica]]. Dualla and Lee Adama's relationship appears ongoing, given the look she gives young Adama when Kara Thrace calls in one day. Dualla also fiddles with her ring finger, suggesting that she is now married). Dualla's keen eyes pick up [[DRADIS]] contacts, which gave the Fleet advance warning to the arrival of a large Cylon fleet. The remnants of the Fleet escape, hoping to return to liberate New Caprica another day ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Not giving spoilers, just clarifying production details: How long will each of the 10 webisodes run? Will they be run on TV right before season 3 starts (I assume they would). Did the Thompson & Weddle writing team write each of the 10 webisodes? Do you have any idea who directed them? ::It's true that David Weddle and I wrote the webisodes. Ron Moore and David Eick assigned them to us during the production of Exodus. The ten short segments combine to tell one story, which takes place during the Cylon Occupation that ended Season 2. The webisodes plant seeds that come to fruition in Season 3. They were all directed by Wayne Rose, the veteran director who's been doing 2nd Unit and 1stAD work for the series. The original title of the story was "Crossroads." The running lengths will vary with what's necessary to tell each segment of the story. The first cut I saw of all ten ran about 25 minutes. :: I'm reading this from the in-house script status report - "Unassigned" just means his deal hadn't been struck at the time the report was generated. Directing credit is turf of the DGA. I believe the contractual obligation is that Felix must shoot the additional material needed for the two eps, unless he chooses to do otherwise. We're hoping his schedule will permit it, because he did a great job on the initial shoot. Many Lord of the Rings fans consider the "Extended Edition" longer DVD versions to be the "definative" version, not the theatrical release, which got me thinking on this. Case in point, there's reportedly a scene where Admiral Cain explains the technical differences between a [[Mercury class battlestar]] and a [[Galactica type battlestar]]: is this information not going to be "valid"? Much of the Deleted Scenes information we've examined previously has existed in a bizarre state of limbo on BattlestarWiki (but it's a system that works) in which we say "this is from a deleted scene and probably not canonical, but as it is not contradicted by anything (yet) its the current version" (i.e. Ellen Tigh said she'd been married to Saul Tigh for 7 years in a ''deleted'' scene, so we don't consider that ''strictly'' canonical. ——Of course the problem is, as Ron has explained in the podcasts, most BSG episodes run long (into the 50 minute range often) and many scenes are simply deleted for time (i.e. the problems that ensued when Apollo/Dualla relationship buildup scenes were cut, usually just for time, from other episodes)--->However, the difference in the Extended Version of (soon to be Hugo Award winning) "Pegasus" is that Ron has openly stated that almost ''all'' of this removed material was taken out simply for ''time'' issues, not ''story'' issues. I guess this would make her (as of season 3) "Cally Henderson Tyrol"? Actress Nicki Clyne always felt "Cally" was her first name too. How is this reconciled with how at some points in the series (I'd have to look hard to find them) people have called her "Specialist Cally", as if that were her last name (by including rank)....come to think of it, there is a possibility that no one ever actually called her "Specialist Cally" in dialogue. I will check. (Btw, while I'm on the subject, who is this "Mexichick": she's one of the regulars in Terry Moore's thread on the Scifi board, and seems to have contact with several cast or crew members).

I must say, Cally is one of the best characters on the show. She won Best Supporting Actress in our [[Golden Toaster Awards|large-scale online fan awards supported by Ron himself]], beating out Dualla, Racetrack, Kat, and Ellen Tigh (it was a landslide victory). Sorry to get so excited, but I'm a card-carrying member of the [http://s15.invisionfree.com/Nicki_Clyne_Fan_Site/index.php?act=idx Nicki Clyne fansite]. You see I've actually been watching Trek from Next Gen, through DS9, and then the Voyager and Enterprise years, and I really feal that "lets get ratings fast by inserting Seven of Nine! Put T'Pol in a blatant shower scene!" stuff was a big blow to scifi genre tv, as it took out a lot of seriousness and believability. I viewed Cally as the "Anti-Seven of Nine" and living embodiement of Ron's essay on [[Naturalistic science fiction]]: instead of one Lara Croft-esque supersoldier Hot Space Babe [TM] main character surrounded by redshirts, on BSG Cally is a *third tier character* and a *female* who gets incredible development and characterization (note: I AM a male aged 18 to 25, it's just that even WE got sick of 7 of 9 and T'Pol).

A few of use on the messageboards in early 2005 just said "hey, that girl from the Miniseries was cool, we hope we see her more"...then came "[[Bastille Day]]" and her popularity exploded. She's the girl next door. And it just became a treat to see she was in and episode, like "Six Degrees of Separation", or "Flight of the Phoenix", or Fragged and Resistance (her standout episodes). It's the same reason we like Kat and Racetrack: they're well rounded, secondary female characters; and like Tyrol and Helo, minor characters can *actually die* in a given episode, increasing the tension. (I.e. Starbuck wouldn't die in Scar, but Kat might have, so I was actually invested in her fate).

And Cally just gradually grew into this really popular character online, from the grassroots up. Some people think it's a joke, but it's because we seriously like the actress and character and think it's one of the elements of scifi genre tv that BSG has fixed.

In "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]", Chief Tyrol listed off that he had served on Battlestars ''Atlantia'', ''Columbia'', and ''Pegasus'', since he was 18. This was actually the first time ''Pegasus'' was mentioned in the series, and it led some to speculate that Tyrol knew some of the ''Pegasus'' crew from before: in an intervew, Aaron Douglas said that a fan asked him about this at a convention, and he said he had never realized that about the referrence, and as far as he knew his character's behind-the-scenes backstory contained nothing particular about his time on ''Pegasus'', (i.e. he didn't really have a relationship with anyone on it, he just served on it along with a dozen other ships); however he said he didn't know what the writers intended. I've noticed that the helmets the piliots wear in Season 2 are different from the ones used through Season 1; were they changed because the actors thought the old ones were too bulky or something? It's nice to see cast and crew and even producers talk to the fans, and act politely compared to many pompous skinjobs out in the frakking world. The question I pose to you, is that I'm aware of a statement Cylon Number 0, also known as "Ronald D. Moore" said in his Scifi Podcast that the Battlestars had support ships in the fleet in Battlestar Groups, analogous to modern day Aircraft Carriers. What I want to know is that the possibility of ALL military ships being destroyed is very how to say; unrealistic. That's not to say that this series has been unrealistic, the fact that many in the Colonial Military reverted to networking after a semi recent war with heuristic machines seems about right with human nature and their lazy ways. But to get back to the point, would it be likely that some military vessels (besides the obvious, Galactica and Pegasus) survived. Many have pointed out that the Todd Boyce fan produced ship model, the 'Defender' has been seen, but I'm not sure how to take this as an "official" military spacecraft. Yeah Pedda Luciana is one of those Vancouver locals that they cast in BSG (as opposed to trucking out lots of American actors they hired local talent): You're in Germany Pedda so I don't know how much American tv you've seen but lots of BSG secondary cast members reappear in several other tv shows made in Vancouver, like Tahmoh Penikett (Helo), Aaron Douglas (Tyrol), Nicki Clyne (Cally), and Carro. Since I like browsing the IMDb I've also noticed that certain Vancouver-based series, most notably "Da Vinci's Inquest", "Godiva's" and "L Word", seem to be a career stop for virtually every Canadian actor. Okay, what I was originally interested in is how the relationship between the writing staff and the casting department was like, if there was any. In fact, this leads me to a related question: Which parts of the production are located in Vancouver and which aren't? ::This gets into a murky area. When TPTB originally asked for webisodes, there was no pay involved. The whole staff politely refused to write any. At some point, TPTB came up with a compensation package that didn't specify per se dollars for webisodes, but gave us a little raise for "additional duties." There were no provisions for recompense for reuse of the original program content, or subsequent for-profit use. We were bummed about that formula but excited about the storytelling possibilities.

In the burial scene of the [[Miniseries]], Adama states "Life here began out there," reminding the assembly that this was the first line of the sacred scrolls, told to them by the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|Lords of Kobol]] uncounted centuries ago.

There is some evidence that appears to indicate that the humans of [[Kobol]] actually originated from the planet [[Earth]]. Although, for the most part, correspondences between the culture of the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]] and Earth (three piece suits, [[Wikipedia: Humvee|Humvees]], military jargon, [[Kinetic Energy Weapon | firearms]], etc.) are presumably dramatic conceits intended to help the audience identify with the characters of the show, there is evidence of a connection beyond these superficial similarities that is difficult to ignore.

When a ground team from [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] enters the [[Tomb of Athena]], they find a map room in the form of a planetarium, depicting constellations in Earth's night sky. [[Laura Roslin]] identifies the actual star patterns, not their symbols, as the original flags of the Twelve Colonies. These patterns are only visible from Earth, which implies that the creators of the map had some prior knowledge of their destination before setting out ([[Home, Part II]]).

This is also consistent with the [[Sacred Scrolls#The "Three Exodi" Interpretation|Triple-Exodus interpretation]] of those portions of the Sacred Scrolls revealed to us thus far, and the veneration of the [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Lords of Kobol|Lords of Kobol]], whose resemblance to the [[Greek Gods]] cannot otherwise be easily accounted for. The Colonial [[Life Forms of the Twelve Colonies|ecosystems]] are also identical to Earth's, with very few exceptions.

In the DVD commentary for the [[Miniseries]], Ron Moore and David Eick expressed that it is meant to be a deliberatly unanswered question whether the series takes place in the past, present, or future relative to Earth.

==Kobol==

While on Kobol, the thirteen tribes apparently lived in an idyllic utopia with their Gods, but roughly 1,600 years later (2,000 years before the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]), this coexistence was ended as Pythia's prophecy came to fruition ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). The prophecy alludes to a "Blaze" which descended on the thirteen tribes and against which the Lords of Kobol were powerless to intervene ([[Home, Part I]]). In despair, [[Athena, Lord of Kobol|Athena]] threw herself from the [[Gates of Hera]], to her death. The leaders of the tribes were [[Tomb of Athena|interred with her]], and the populace of the tribes were taken in a "[[Galleon]]" (a spacecraft) to their places of refuge. Twelve tribes find and occupy a solar system with at least 12 habitable worlds, while a thirteenth tribe locates a world they named [[Earth]]. [[Zeus, Lord of Kobol|Zeus]] warned the survivors that any return to Kobol "would exact a price in blood."
 

==Settlement==

After settling on their new homes, another cataclysm befell the twelve tribes (perhaps simply order breaking down amongst the handful of refugee survivors that fled Kobol with only what supplies they could carry). This resulted in the destruction of much of their knowledge base and sent the colonies into a dark age ([http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/01/index.html#a000016 RDM, January 30, 2005]). (On the real-world Earth, similar dark ages occurred after the falls of [[Wikipedia:Dark Ages|Rome]] and [[Wikipedia:Greek Dark Ages|Mycenaean Greece]], and lasted for centuries). It is possible that much of their technological knowledge of interstellar spaceflight was lost after the escape from Kobol. Over time, they rebuilt their technological base, and travel between the Colonies was commonplace for some time before the Cylon Attack.

Inequity and war were common between the Colonies for most of this time period. The Colonials were forced to abandon networked computers and wireless devices in favor of more secure and durable technologies, able to withstand both Cylon infiltration and the powerful nuclear weapons used by the warring parties ([http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/01/index.html#a000013 RDM, January 19, 2005]). Twelve [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestars]] built in the opening years of the war best exemplified these principles, including ''[[Galactica]]'' ([[Miniseries]]). After the Cylon War ended, a long and bloody struggle of approximately 12 years, an armistice was declared, and the Cylons departed for a [[Cylon homeworld|world of their own]]. The Colonials established a neutral meeting place, [[Armistice Station]], and made diplomatic overtures for Cylons and Colonials to meet annually. However, these overtures were continually ignored.

After the war, the military went through a Reduction in Force, resulting in the discharge of many of the war's veterans.

==Federal Era==

While the Cylon War had a lasting effect on the government of the Twelve Colonies, the population as a whole, much of it born after the war, had relegated it to a historical note in textbooks (much as real-world Earth citizens regard their Second World War). The now-united government continued to maintain a large standing military, which, forty years after the war, had grown to include 120 battlestars ([[Miniseries]]), most apparently more advanced than those of the original battlestar class ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]). This buildup apparently began about twenty years after the war, around the time [[Saul Tigh]] and [[William Adama]] rejoined the military ("[[Scattered]]" and its [http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/downloads/podcast/mp3/201/bsg_ep201_FULL.mp3 podcast]).

With their military assets now concentrated in a central government under the [[Articles of Colonization]] ([[Epiphanies|with Caprica City as the capitol]]), the new government of the Twelve Colonies was able to maintain peace among its members ([[Water]]). Now presumably free of the Cylon threat, technologies which could not be used during the war were redeployed throughout the fleet, increasing its effectiveness against more mundane opponents ([[Miniseries]]).

This new era of federalism was not without considerable opposition. Dissidents on Sagittaron lead by [[Tom Zarek]] took arms against the government ([[Bastille Day]]), supplied by arms dealers like [[Leoben Conoy#Ragnar Anchorage Copy|Leoben Conoy]] ([http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2005/01/index.html#a000016 RDM, January 30, 2005]). Regardless of these localized attempts at insurrection, on the whole the Twelve Colonies faced no major military threats, with the loss of contact with the Cylons. The [[Colonial Fleet]]'s standing numbers were actually kept disproportionately high relative to their common uses, in fear that one day the Cylons might return. Day-to-day work for the Fleet consisted of handling the small-scale brush fire attempts at rebellion such as on Sagittaron, but these were all light peacekeeping actions rather than actual fighting. Prior to the Cylon attack, none of ''Galactica's'' younger-generation crew had ever seen any real combat.

==Fall of the Twelve Colonies==

The arrogance of the Colonials in re-equipping their military with technologies vulnerable to Cylon interference proved to be their undoing. Forty years after the first Cylon War, [[Cylon agent|Cylon infiltrators]] subverted Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]]'s [[Command Navigation Program]], allowing an advanced Cylon armada to destroy the Colonial fleet with impunity.

The attack resulted in the nuclear bombardment and occupation of the Colonies and the enslavement of most of the few isolated survivors in a series of [[Farms]]. Altogether, less than one hundred ships (mostly civilian) survived the attack, including only two battlestars - the nearly obsolete ''[[Galactica]]'' and the [[Mercury class battlestar]] ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''. The survivors abandoned the Colonies and formed a convoy in search of the thirteenth colony, [[Earth]], where they hope to find refuge.

The '''Forum''' was located in the [[City of the Gods]], on ancient [[Kobol]]. After the exodus from Kobol and the establishment of the [[Twelve Colonies]] a second Forum was built on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]], either in [[Delphi]] or [[Caprica City]], in tribute of the original. This may imply that Caprica was the first of the twelve worlds to be colonized and be a reason for its importance above the other Colonies.

It is not clear if the Forum was religious in nature (perhaps a temple to the [[Lords of Kobol]]), governmental, or simply a civic gathering place. [[Laura Roslin]] describes it as a large dome-like structure with a colonnade of pillars surounding it ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]).

Other structures on Kobol that might be mirrored on Caprica include the [[Opera House]] and the Temple. It is possible the Forum and the rumored Temple are one in the same.

Presumed lost with the rest of the Colonial military fleet, ''Pegasus'' actually managed to escape the destruction of the Colonies when Admiral [[Helena Cain]] ordered a [[blind jump]]. While saving the battlestar, about 700 of her crew died in the initial attack.

Although ''Pegasus'' is advanced enough to have the [[Command Navigation Program]] installed, which the Cylons used as a backdoor, ''Pegasus'' had just checked in for a three-month refit at the time of the Cylon attack, and as such, almost all of its networked [[Computers|computer]] systems were offline. As a result, the Cylons were not able to immobilize the ship using computer infiltration. This, combined with the sheer luck of not being one of the first ships at the shipyards that the Cylons focused their attack on, and Admiral Cain's order to just randomly and jump anywhere immediately, allowed ''Pegasus'' to escape.

At some point, a [[Cylon agent|Cylon]] infiltrator was discovered onboard - a woman named [[Gina]]. She killed seven men when apprehended, and was then incarcerated, brutally interrogated and gang-raped by many of the crew.

After the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]], ''Pegasus'' occupied itself with hit-and-run attacks on various Cylon assets. It participated in a bold assault on a staging area filled with fifteen squadrons of [[Raider]]s. When Cain's long-time [[Executive officer]] expressed hesitancy to launch the ships' fighters against such odds, Cain publicly executed him on the bridge and promoted [[Jack Fisk]] to replace him. Fisk tells this story (and later recants it) while drunk to Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], which Tigh believed to be true when he recounts it in turn to Commander Adama.

Some time later, ''Pegasus'' discovered that a Cylon fleet it was tracking appeared to be jumping, not randomly, but to systems with natural resources. The battlestar accidentally encountered [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] led by battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' when ''Pegasus'' jumped ahead to scout the Cylon target's projected next position (as it turned out, the Cylons were jumping to systems ''Galactica'' had passed through or explored). Cain assumes overall command of the Fleet and began transferring supplies and many personnel between the two battlestars, including Captain [[Lee Adama]] and Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]]. Cain appeared unconcerned with the needs of the civilians and their ships, a problem noted to Commander Adama by President [[Laura Roslin]].

Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] mentioned during his interrogation by Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] that he served aboard a number of battlestars in his military career, including ''Pegasus'' ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). If Admiral Cain ever knew him during this time, she made no mention of it, and had no reservations sentencing him and [[Karl Agathon]] to death when they inadvertently kill Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]], Cain's chief "Cylon interrogator". [[William Adama]], commander of ''Galactica'', refused to permit the execution, precipitating an armed standoff between the two ships ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

==Pegasus Fleet==

It was later revealed that ''Pegasus'' originally had its own small fleet of 15 civilian ships, found about a week after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. The tiny caravan was equipped with FTL drives and weapons. Rather than defending them (as ''Galactica'' had at [[Ragnar Anchorage]]), Admiral Cain saw them as potential spare parts for ''Pegasus'', and decided that ''Pegasus' '' military needs were a priority over them. The civilian ships were stripped for parts, including their weapons and FTL drives, marooning them and leaving them completely at the mercy of the Cylons when Cain left.

However not all of the civilians were left to die: after looking over the passenger lists, Cain selected those civilians who she thought would be of value (such as [[Peter Laird]], an aeronautical engineer), forcibly drafting them into her crew. However, 15 'selectees' aboard the civilian transport ''[[Scylla]]'' were traveling with their families and refused to leave without them. Admiral Cain ordered her marines to kill two families (men, women, and children) to shock the rest into submission. ''Pegasus'' then abandoned the civilian ships to pursue Admiral Cain's campaign of hit-and-run attacks against Cylon forces. ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]])

It is stated that DRADIS stands for 'Direction RAnge and DIStance'.

Should it not be 'Direction RAnge Detection and Identification System' This still has the acronym DRADIS?

"Range" and "Distance" are indeed redundant in their most common sense, but in space, a system like this would be pretty much pointless if it didn't provide directional information in ''two'' axes, as well as the distance. I'm not sure of the origin of the original interpretation, but if it's not from quotable dialog, it's probably incorrect. Spherical coordinate systems require three values, but different names are used in various contexts: (radial, azimuth, polar), (radial, azimuth, zenith), (range, azimuth, elevation). In the first two sets, "radial" is the distance from the point of origin, but a radial pattern is a one that appears to originate at a point, like spokes in a wheel. A scriptwriter could easily substitute RAdial into an acronym, without realizing it is technically incorrect. Substitute DIrection for azimuth and DIStance for range, and it yields what I think is the intended derivation. Alternatively, RAdian is a unit of plane angle. Just a comment - Astronomy uses a coordinate system that uses Declination and Right Ascension to pinpoint astral bodies. If you include distance, you now have a system that you can use to determine another objects position in space *relative to you* (if I call my "up" north, then I can place everything by how many degrees "north" (or by using negative numbers how far "south") it is, how many degrees "right" (or "left") it is, and how far away from me it is)

Acronyms should be capitalized unless there is a wiki convention that says otherwise. You are right in that people casually dont say RADAR in capitals when writing because it one of the exceptions to the rule. The word "Radar" is now officially in the English language as a standard word, theorfor losing the capitalisation in the process. Laser is also another example of an acronym adopted as an official word. Radio as far as i know was never an acronym?
