Overview
: Pursuing the Resurrection Hub at the whim of the Hybrid, a team of Viper pilots and Cylon rebels become uneasy collaborators as they formulate a battle plan to unbox the Threes and destroy Cylon resurrection forever. Meanwhile, Roslin and Baltar try desperately to communicate with the panicking Hybrid and Helo discovers a disturbing characteristic within one of the Eights.

Summary
cleanup

Teaser
*The start of this episode overlaps with the end of Guess What's Coming to Dinner?.
*During the jump, Roslin has a brief vision of herself and Elosha in an empty version of Galactica.
*The Hybrid soon makes a second jump, and Roslin's vision continues. She encounters a dying version of herself.

Act 1
*An Eight determines that the Hybrid is panicking due to Natalie's injury. Baltar attempts to calm her, initially appearing to be successful, but the Hybrid jumps again. Roslin's vision continues, and she sees Thrace, Cottle and the Adamas standing over her bed. Elosha speaks to the dying Roslin, chastising her for her lack of empathy.
*The Eight tells Helo that the Hybrid is following the Hub, and discusses strategy with him.
*The Eight massages Helo's back, Helo comments that Athena learned to do so after meeting him, and the Eight reveals that she accessed Athena's memories from the last download.
*Helo speaks with Roslin in Gonzo's Raptor. Roslin orders Helo to bring D'Anna to her.
*On the Resurrection Hub, a D'Anna is awakened by Cavil and Boomer, who discusses the Cylon civil war with her. D'Anna makes a disparaging remark about the Eights' fickleness.

Act 2
*In the Basestar hangar, Helo and an Eight give a mission briefing to a number of Sixes, Eights and Colonial pilots. Several pilots express concerns about his safety and the reliability of the Cylon pilots. The Eight assures the human pilots that they are as reliable and skilful as Athena.
*Baltar and Roslin attampt to question the Hybrid with little sucess. They bicker and Baltar walks off, and then the Hybrid declares that a Three has been unboxed and jumps.
*In a vision, Elosha and Roslin walk through the hallways of Galactica. Roslin speculates that Elosha and the visions are a manifestation of her subconscious. Roslin and Elosha see William Adama reading Searider Falcon to the dying Roslin.
*After the jump, Baltar begins talking to a Centurion about hierarchy and religion, asserting that the Centurion is loved by God as well.
*Roslin and Helo discuss their secret plans regarding D'Anna, Helo expresses reservations, asserting that the Sixes and Eights are trustworthy. They are interrupted by an alarm indicating that they have reached the Hub.

Act 3
*On the Resurrection Hub, Boomer comments on the arrival of the rebel Basestar.
*One of the Cavils tries to convince D'Anna to talk to the rebels and defuse the conflict, but D'Anna replies curtly and threatens to shout out the names of the Final Five.
*Boomer states that the rebel Basestar has launched 25 Heavy Raiders.
*Outside the Hub, the Heavy Raiders release the Vipers. The Raiders attack the Basestar, while the Vipers head towards the Hub.
*Cavil concludes that the rebels are attempting to destroy the Hub, and comments that doing so would be mass murder, and would make death permanent for Cylons. On hearing this D'Anna breaks Cavil's neck and Boomer flees.
*Missiles destroy a node at the top of the Hub, taking out its FTL capability, and Helo's Raptor heads towards the Hub.
*In the Hub, Helo and an Eight encounter D'Anna and the dead Cavil. Helo tells D'Anna to run and grabs her arm.
*Gonzo panics due to the damage to his Raptor, suggesting that he jump out. Hardball advises against jumping back to Galactica due to its distance. Gonzo is shot as jumps out.
*In the Hub, Helo hesitates upon seeing a number of inert Eight bodies. The Eight tells him they should leave, and drags the objecting D'Anna.
*Baltar continues to evangalise to the Centurion, but as the rebel Basestar is hit by a missile the explosion destroys the Centurion and seriously injures Baltar.
*Two Marines carry Baltar to a bed while Roslin carries a First Aid kit.
*Roslin orders them out, bandaging Baltar and injecting him with morpha. In his drug-addled state Baltar talks to Roslin about religion, telling her that he once harbored terrible guilt. Pressed on what that guilt is for he tells Roslin that he unwittingly gave the Cylons the access codes prior to the fall of the Twelve Colonies,. He compares the fall to the flood Pythia spoke of, which wiped out most of humanity and rejuvenated them. Shocked by Baltar's confession, Roslin tries to kill Baltar by removing his bandages, while he begs her to stop.

Act 4
*Helo announces that he has D'Anna and orders a nuclear strike on the Hub. The Vipers fire two nukes each into the Hub destroying it and at least one of the two enemy basestars.
*Baltar continues to beg for his life.
*There is another jump. In Roslin's vision, William Adama stands over a dying Laura Roslin, while Laura and Elosha watch them. Elosha convinces Laura to show Baltar mercy, saying that humanity cannot be saved on a "case-by-case basis".
*With a sudden change of heart Laura desperately checks to see if Baltar is still alive, then begins re-bandaging him.
*Aboard the basestar with the Three Helo argues with the Eight, saying that his orders are to take D'Anna to the president. The Eight is upset and D'Anna comments cynically that such double-crossing is a very human trait.
*Helo brings D'Anna to Roslin. Roslin orders Helo out, telling him not to let anyone else in.
*D'Anna immediately inspects the injured Baltar and speculates that he is likely to survive.
*When asked about the Final Five, D'Anna jokes that Laura Roslin is one of them, and refuses to provide any information until she feels she is safe, the information being the only thing she has. She says she will tell Laura who the Final Five are after she is taken back to the fleet.
*Sometime later Laura sits alone listening to the Hybrid. As the Hybrid jumps she has a final encounter with Elosha.
*William Adama sees the basestar. In the landing bay, he meets Laura Roslin. He says that he missed her, and she says that she loves him.

Notes
Story
*The survivor count at the top of the show notes the already established death on Lieutenant Eammon Pike, whose body is discovered in the Raptor that managed to jump to the Fleet. Other human fatalities are impossible to determine as a result of the battle.
*The events of this episode, starting from the Hybrid's jump of the rebel basestar in "Guess What's Coming To Dinner?", and William Adama's mission to stay behind in a Raptor awaiting Laura Roslin's return spans two days. Ergo, the events of "Sine Qua Non" occur over the course of two days.
* Unlike previous episodes, this episode is part of the same overall story occurring concurrently with the episode before it (Sine Qua Non). The episode shows the events from the baseship's perspective, whereas "Sine Qua Non" shows the uncertainty and reactions to said uncertainty from the Fleet's perspective.

Cylons
*Number Two/Leoben Conoy is notably absent from the episode (appearing only in the recap at the beginning), and only Sixes and Eights are among the Cylons fighting in the battle. Since actor Callum Keith Rennie is credited for the episode, it is likely that scenes with him were shot but cut.
*There is only one Number Three in existence, and any possibility of unboxing the others has been lost.
*With the destruction of the Resurrection Hub, the Cylons have permanently lost the ability to download into new bodies.
* As previously shown in "The Farm", Heavy Raiders are piloted by humanoid Cylons unlike the smaller autonomous Raiders.
* This episode contains the first mention of Natalie's name in dialogue

Analysis
* Roslin enters a hallucinatory trance state as the basestar jumps about wildly. Roslin has not previously experienced this sensation during the Fleet's jumps, although Kara Thrace underwent something similar in "He That Believeth In Me". Moreover, Cally Henderson exhibited symptoms of vertigo during Galactica's first jump in the Miniseries.
* Over the course of the series, the Eights have been notorious for shifting their alliances. Number Three's comment about the Eight model's tendency to be passionate allies until they see "something shiny" seems to be yet another example of the fickle nature of the Number Eight model. A somewhat more direct observation of this fact is shown in "Faith" when Sharon Agathon denounces a group of Eights after hearing their desire to rebel against Natalie and the other Number Six models.
* The battle in this episode bears a striking resemblance to "Resurrection Ship, Parts I and II". In both episodes, a shaky alliance between Galactica and another force takes on an ostensibly irreplaceable Cylon resurrection facility by first disabling its FTL capability and then engaging it directly with fighters. Furthermore, both sides plan to double-cross each other after the successful execution of the attack.
* Roslin's suspicions of Baltar, which she has had since "Epiphanies" (and had a vague inkling of in "Six of One") have finally been confirmed.

Questions
*What role does the Hub play in the proper functioning of other Resurrection Ships? Why are these apparently vital functions centralized?
*Why do the Cylons have only one Resurrection Hub and the implied inability to build another? If the Cylons are capable of building a new Hub, how long it would it take them?
*Why is the Hub so poorly defended by Cavil's faction?
*Does Boomer make it off of the Hub before it is destroyed?
*How will Cavil's condescending attitude toward Sharon Valerii ("Pet Eight") affect her?
*Where are the Number Twos during all these events?
*Have other Eights have accessed Athena's memories, and how will this affect her relationship with Karl Agathon?
*What will happen to the rebel Cylons and their baseship?
*How will the rebel Cylons respond to Roslin's deception regarding Number Three?
*Will the Cylons - especially with Natalie dead - return to their earlier plan of taking hostages in order to gain access to Three?
*Is Roslin's vision of Elosha related to other characters' internal manifestations, such as Baltar's virtual Six, or simply a manifestation of her subconsciousness, as Roslin believes?
*What will happen to Baltar now that his guilt regarding the attack on the Colonies has been revealed?
*Is Baltar's evangelizing of the Centurion genuine or an attempt to obtain a useful ally?

Noteworthy Dialogue
* Number Three has just been unboxed and resurrected and is in the tank. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and Cavil are present. After being told that the Eights are on the opposite side of the Ones (Cavils) in the Cylon Civil War, Three inquires as to why Boomer is there:
:Number Three [looks at Boomer directly]: Boomer's an Eight. Shouldn't she be on the other side? [Boomer looks sternly at Three]
:Number One: Boomer is my "Pet Eight". She has seen the light of reason. An Eight can make a passionate ally.
:Number Three [contemptuously]: Oh, until she sees something shiny! [Boomer's expression is stern]

*Laura Roslin and Karl Agathon are discussing the possibility that Three has been unboxed. Agathon disagrees with her plan to keep Three from the Cylons and doesn't think that the Cylons would betray them like that.
:Karl Agathon [shaking his head]: No, no, I don't think so. Not the Sharons, the Eights.
:Laura Roslin [patiently but firmly]: Captain, you are not married to the entire production line. I cannot afford to be sentimental right now. I cannot afford you to be sentimental either. If you can't do this job, find me someone who can.

* Aboard Karl Agathon's Raptor after the destruction of the Resurrection Hub:
:Number Three: And with a whimper, every Cylon in the universe begins to die.
:Number Eight: Yes, that's right, and it's a good thing, D'Anna, because now there's no difference. We can all start trusting each other.

* In Roslin's vision, as Roslin and Elosha watch Adama stand over a dying Roslin:
:Elosha: I'm not saying Baltar's done more good than harm in the universe; he hasn't. The thing is, the harder it is to recognize someone's right to draw a breath, the more crucial it is. If humanity is going to prove itself worthy of surviving, it can't do it on a case by case basis. A bad man feels his death just as keenly as a good man.
:Laura Roslin: What do you want from me here?
:William Adama: Laura.
:Elosha: Just love someone.
:Laura Roslin: Love.
:William Adama: You go. You go on. You go on and rest now. I'm not gonna' be selfish. You go. Rest.

* Roslin and Adama tenderly greeting each other on the basestar's hangar deck:
:Adama: Missed you.
:Roslin: Me too.
:Roslin [Embracing Adama]: I love you.
:Adama [Breaking the embrace; looks into her eyes]: About time.

* Gaius Baltar reveals to Roslin his guilt over the original attacks on the Colonies:
:"Pythia talks about a flood that wiped out most of humanity. Nobody blames the flood. The flood is a force of nature. Through the flood, mankind is rejuvenated -- born again. I was not a flood, you see. I blamed myself... I blamed myself. But God had made the man who made that choice. God made us all perfect. And in that thought, all my guilt flies away -- flies away like a bird."
:Since Biers has not appeared in past episodes that feature the fleet-wide press, it can be speculated that prior to the Cylon Attack, she was more of a tabloid investigative reporter than a mainstream journalist.

Actually, there's a simpler explanation - the journalists we've seen so far have mostly been members of the press crew covering Galacticas decomissioning - print journalists and radio commentators. Biers is a filmmaker. I mean, you wouldn't expect to find Michael Moore covering a white house press conference, right? That's just not what he does. --Peter Farago 17:41, 11 September 2005 (EDT)

I found a good news item for Lucy Lawless's future on the show. It comes from a reliable entertainment news site.
"Lucy Lawless is joining the cast of SciFi's Battlestar Galactica for 10 episodes of the third season. Should it be mentioned that in one of the recent issues of EW, there was some information stating that {{spoiltext|D'Anna would be the leader of the Cylons? The text was "Former Xena, Lucy Lawless, will parlay her second appearance (on Feb. 24) as sentient hottie/brassy TV reporter D'Anna Biers into a full-time gig on Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica. The 10-epicode arc, starting next season, will detail D'Anna's emergence as - SPOILER ALERT - leader of her human-hating species, the Cylons. "I'm disinterested in playing a bleeding-heart Cylon," Lawless giggles. DrBat, please read the article first. On January 29th I already got this information from a Lucy Lawless official fansite's transcript of Lawless's appearance at a the official XenaCon. But she also gave the idea that she is not "the" leader of the Cylons; factions will develop when she claims this. ==Main Image==
Hey, I was wondering which of these three images you would prefer if I placed as a main image.

The first is the same as the current, but cropped so that we can actually see her better.

The second is another promo image, cropped to show a specific section of her, and she is in another psot.

The third is a crop of the last.
</gallery>

I myself sort of prefer the middle or last one, but all are good for me. The most important thing is that the image conveys the character and her attitude, so other people's opinions would be nice :)--Sauron18 16:45, 17 September 2006 (CDT)

So, I was waiting for episode 3x07 to air to bring this up, and it's that a lot of good promotional images were released for Three in this episode. Now, DrBat put one up, but the one I had actually thought would've made a really good one (albeit, had mentioned yet for spoiler safety of readers) is this one because it's a better angle in my opinion and she looks more formal, but you choose whichever you want.

So let's call for a vote for the main picture

<gallery>
Image:Threemos.PNG|Picture1
Image:Season 3 - Promo - AMOS - Number Three.jpg|Picture 2
</gallery>

One of these, or the past ones. My vote goes for “Picture 2” of this batch, as I said above, I think she simply looks better and more in her natural environment, but choose as you please. --Sauron18 19:35, 11 November 2006 (CST)
*I just want to add that I actually do like the one presently there right now, however, I do feel like that angle is a bit weird for D'anna, but whichever of the pics is selected, I think the other one still deserves to be on the article. --Sauron18 20:06, 11 November 2006 (CST)
Capitalization of the "A" in D'Anna
I noticed that the main page for the character has a lowercase "a" after the apostrophe. That doesn't appear to be correct. == Disambiguation? ==

I'm wondering if we're going to have to do some in-article disambiguation soon between D'anna, the mainline Threes and "Oracle-Three" (the one having the visions). Any thoughts on this?--<font color="#4b0082">み使い</font> <font color="#2f4f4f">Mitsukai</font> 19:42, 17 October 2006 (CDT)
:I think the article is sufficient so far. D'anna Biers, and the Three that is the antigonist of Caprica-Six are the only ones significantly differentiated. It's likely (although not confirmable unless a BW:OC answer comes) that the Three that is revealed at the end of "Final Cut" is the same one. --Spencerian 21:48, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

It IS D'anna
So, I had previousley argued that the Three we see with the baby & stuff is the one that got "rocked" by Six. However, the discussion made me look for proof, so I looked for the very first time we saw the Three that was certainly the one who got the baby, and I remembered that we see her ear, and she has 3 ear pearcincs in one ear.

Now I know this is LL, so any Three could have them, but then I thought that maybe, if D'anna had previousley appeared with 3 Earings, this was a clue that it was that Three (since their bodies are probably not made with pearcings). And I was suprrised to find, that D'anna Biers did, indeed, wear 3 earings in the same fashion, one which no other Three has worn.

So I admit I was wrong and we now know that "Baby-Three" is indeed "D'anna Biers". I put this in a category of it's own because I consider the proof important.

I know many of you had already assumed this, but this is my proof that it's the same character, and that we might disambiguate at least this specific Cylon from the batch. --Sauron18 23:57, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

:The questions that bring up would be if "Baby-Three" is indeed "D'anna Biers", did she live a year with the humans and never managed to bump into Anders or the others who were rescued,(who know what a Three looks like) or was D'anna perhaps killed from the Cloud 9 explosion and somehow resurected? ::The Cylon copies share memories; while it probable that the Three that carries Hera away is the Fleet's "D'anna," we cannot be sure. ALL Cylon models have the same identity that changes over time with exposure and experience. The D'anna copy did not speak in kiwi accent, now, all do. Photographic evidence for everyone (with episode citations) could help your case. There's nothing in aired content that I'm aware of which suggests where the original D'anna model ends up. --Spencerian 11:27, 24 October 2006 (CDT)
:::You can see D'Anna with 3 earings in "Final Cut", and the Three we see shows them very clearly in "Exodus I". ==Was that a Retcon?==
I just watched "Hero", and unless I'm mistaken that had a retcon, making the deleted scenes in "Downloaded" non canonical (at least the ones with D'Anna), and making "Rock Three" and "D'Anna Biers" the exact same Cylon.....

Unless Rock Three shared her memory and D'Anna for some reason took her place in Cylon society, but I doubt that, so this smells like a retcon to me. Thoughts? --Sauron18 21:23, 17 November 2006 (CST)
:Apparently she's "Rock-Three", not the reporter. Only "Rock Three" flashbacks were in that sequence, not D'Anna Biers flashbacks. -- Noneofyourbusiness 22:01, 17 November 2006 (CST)
:::The costume doesn't tell us much of anything, and the Cylons would know about the internal design of Galactica via the reports of Boomer, Shelly Godfrey and Bomber Doral. ::::Well I'm just saying, I doubt it's a coincidence she was wearing both D'Anna costumes, but whether the memory is another Three's or hers is unknown. It does seem to me, however, that her being D'Anna would be the simplest explanation as to why she remembers some things, and why everyone calls her that. --Sauron18 16:01, 18 December 2006 (CST)
Reorganize with information from Hero
Sorry if I'm repeating anything above, but I just want to establish consensus before we reorganize the article.

The flashbacks seen during Three's suicide in "Hero" included images of:
*Three, sitting in a theater with other Cylons in "Final Cut"
*Three, leveling a gun at Anders in "Downloaded"
*Three, finding Hera on New Caprica in "Exodus, Part II" (this one was referred to by Baltar as "D'anna")
This strongly suggests that these Threes, and the one featured recently on the Basestar, are the same person.

Meanwhile, the Fleet copy would be the one featured in "Final Cut" and cut from "Downloaded". Although we don't know her ultimate fate, it's almost inconceivable that she managed to avoid being out by Anders for over a year on New Caprica. Until we learn otherwise, the safest assumption is that she was executed, like the two Cavils in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II". --Peter Farago 11:36, 1 December 2006 (CST)
:Well, the main Three had a dream in which she was dressed as D'Anna Biers and was in D'Anna's setting....so it's still rather unclear. --Sauron18 15:59, 18 December 2006 (CST)

Info box incorrect?
The info box states that the Three that Bulldog killed was presumably not resurrected. I'm assuming this is because of the virus she appears to have being a threat to the cylons.

Kara reasoned later in that episode that the cylons on the basestar Bulldog was on faked being sick. This was to trick the colonials with a story they would buy into. Kara asked what are the odds that there were two seperate viruses. There weren't. The cylons on Bulldog's basestar didn't encounter the probe either so they don't have the original virus.

Three faked being sick for Bulldog's benefit so he would think his escape was plausible. When she died she was almost certainly able to download into another body.
Summary
Teaser
*On Pegasus, Lee Adama and Dualla talk of Galactica's mission. Adama worries that Admiral Adama's mission will fail, and about his impending responsibilities as leader of The Fleet. Dee notes that Lee has given up hope on his father, but expresses her faith in her husband.
*On New Caprica, Samuel Anders confronts Saul Tigh about his wife Ellen's betrayal and tells him that either Tigh "takes care" of Ellen, or someone less sympathetic will do so.

Act 1
*Ellen Tigh explains her recent actions, that she would do absolutely anything to save Saul, including betraying the resistance. Tigh consoles her and provides her a drink when she asks. She falls unconscious, her drink having been poisoned by her husband. He says that he loves her, rests his head on her corpse, and weeps.
*On Colonial One, Gaius Baltar tells the Cylons that they have failed in their experiment and suggests the Cylons simply leave. A Three voices the concern that one day the descendants of mankind might exact vengeance upon the Cylons, should they be left to their own devices.
*Gaeta suddenly looks up, noticing dozens of explosions can outside the window, signalling the beginning of the Battle of New Caprica.
*Anders and the resistance team has set a series of explosions, mimicking a Fleet attack and causing confusion among the Cylons.
*Tory Foster commands a team of section leaders in the evacuation and orders Maya to head for her ship with Isis.
*Anders and a large group of resistance fighters retrieve weapons from beneath the Pyramid court to rescue the detainees in the detention center.
*In space above New Caprica, Galactica deploys a squadron of Raptors and Vipers. The Raptors launch swallows to mimic the EM signature of two Colonial battlestars. The Cylons pick them up and fall for the ruse, moving two basestars with their Raiders away from the planet.
*The Cylon command on Colonial One initially are fooled by the swallows and their mimicked battlestar signatures.

Act 2
*The Raptors succeed in drawing off the entire Raider defenses of the two baseships, and leave the vicinity of New Caprica with the Raiders in pursuit.
*When Leoben Conoy leaves the residence inside the Detention Center to aid with the fighting, he keeps Kara Thrace inside. She assaults him and tries to escape, but he knocks her unconscious.
*Tom Zarek tasks Jammer to protect Laura Roslin as she makes her way to Colonial One.
*At the entrance to the shipyard, where the Cylons keep the grounded Colonial vessels, a team under Tigh and Galen Tyrol are pinned down by Cylon Centurions.
*The Cylons realize the decoy drones as Galactica jumps into the planet's upper atmosphere, avoiding initial detection from the baseships. As the ship plunges rapidly towards the planet, mid-descent, Galactica launches its Vipers.
*Before it could collide with the ground, the ship jumps back into space. The Vipers begin to attack targets on the ground and clear the way of Centurions for civilians to escape.
*As others are freed from the Detention Center, Anders finds his unconscious wife and carries her away.
*Galactica is shaken up by her reentry to orbit. Their plan to remove the Raider fighter defenses to allow the civilians to escape is working, and, according to plan, the two basestars near the planet are coming for them. But when two more baseships appear out of the nebula, Admiral Adama realizes they cannot hold off all four.

Act 3
*The battle is turning against Galactica. Her FTL drives are down, most of her weapons are offline and there is heavy structural damage from the atmospheric entry. The basestars are closing in and the battlestar is bombarded from all sides with no hope of survival. "It's been an honor," Adama says.
*At that moment Pegasus joins the battle, Lee Adama having disobeyed his father's orders. He opens fire with the forward batteries and incapitates one basestar in the opening salvo. Admiral Adama orders priority repairs on the FTL drives.
*When Thrace awakens, she goes back to retrieve Kacey against Anders' advice, who soon follows her.
*The Cylons realize that they have lost and decide to evacuate the planet. Number Three volunteers to stay behind and set off the nuclear weapon that was left in the city for such a contingency. She offers Baltar a place with the Cylons and leaves.
*Several Colonial ships initiate intra-atmosphere jumps from New Caprica as soon as they become airborne.
*Pegasus succeeds in drawing fire off of her sister ship, and is heavily bombarded by missiles, having left all of her Vipers back with the rest of the civilian Fleet. Admiral Adama realizes that his son has planned a one-way mission for Pegasus, and orders recall of Galactica's fighters.
*On Colonial One, Felix Gaeta holds Baltar at gunpoint, and accuses of having betrayed humanity. Gaeta admits his guilt in idealistically believing in Baltar, but has realized, in the end, that Baltar was only thinking about himself. Baltar admits his own guilt and begs Gaeta to shoot him. Gaeta relents, however, giving Baltar a final chance to redeem himself: stop Three from setting off the nuclear bomb.
*With Pegasus dying, Lee Adama orders everyone to abandon ship. He sets the ship CBDR with a basestar as the last of the crew leaves in Raptors. Pegasus’ collides with a basestar, destroying it; the remains of Pegasus’ starboard flight pod collides with and destroys yet another basestar.
*Kara Thrace returns to the apartment to find Kacey, and Conoy enters with the child.

Act 4
*To try to regain possession of Kacey, Kara Thrace appears to give in to Leoben's demands to say "I love you." She does, and kisses him. As they are embraced, Thrace uses the diversion to stab the Cylon to death. She picks up Kacey and leaves with Anders.
*Three searches Dodona Selloi's tent, but the oracle has left. Outside, Caprica-Six and Baltar find Hera next to Maya's lifeless body, still alive.
*Three arrives, asks to hold the child, and leaves with her. Caprica-Six says Three no longer intends to detonate the nuke, then leaves the planet with Baltar.
*Laura Roslin and a group of resistance fighters enter the now abandoned Colonial One and are the last ship to leave the planet.
*On Galactica, many people are reunited as Tyrol immediately takes charge of ushering the incoming refugees. When Thrace shows Kacey to Tyrol, another woman walks by and recognizes the girl as her daughter, whom the Cylons had stolen. The mother thanks Thrace for rescuing Kacey. Thrace is visibly and emotionally paralyzed by the revelation that Kacey is not her actual daughter.
*Admiral Adama gives a warm welcome to his son, who was happy not to have followed his son's orders.
*The admiral welcomes Tigh back aboard, and congratulates him on bringing everyone back from New Caprica. With a tremble to his voice, Tigh quietly replies, "Not all of them."
*The colonists in Galactica's hangar deck begin chanting "A-dam-a, A-dam-a..." and carry the admiral on their shoulders in celebration. Adama turns to see Tigh wandering off, numbed with grief.
*Tory Foster tells Roslin that neither Maya nor Hera can be found, and it seems likely neither made it off the planet. Foster apologizes, but Roslin muses that this was part of something bigger than them.
*Admiral Adama shaves off his mustache and returns to a fully staffed CIC, aboard the now very loud, bustling corridors of Galactica.

Questions
*With Baltar missing at the conclusion of this episode, who will become the President of the Twelve Colonies? (Answer)
*What will be the final disposition of the Pegasus officers, and the former military personnel who have returned from New Caprica? (Answer)
*Did Ellen Tigh know or suspect that the drink was poisoned? (Answer)
*What consequences will Ellen Tigh's death have for her husband? Will Saul Tigh return to his old alcoholic habits? (Answer)
*What equipment and people were left behind on New Caprica? (Answer about people: Survivor Count)
*Will Gaeta be the target of persecution or assassination as a collaborator? Or will people believe in him when he is found out to be the secret informant? (Answer)
*Will Cally Tyrol identify Jammer as the NCP officer who released her, based on his voice? (Answer)
* Now that Galactica is carrying the Viper squadrons from both battlestars, will the starboard flight pod be returned to service? (Answer)
* What are the Cylons' plans for Gaius Baltar? (Answer)
* How does Internal Six know that the baby Maya had was Hera?
* Where is Boomer? (Answer)
* How many ships are in the Fleet as of the Battle of New Caprica? Also, in light of the exodus, what of consumables and other resources needed to sustain the Fleet? Were these loaded into ships already as part of the escape plan?
*In what condition are Galactica's gun batteries following the Battle of New Caprica? Do any of them remain operable, or is Galactica largely stripped of its main armaments?

Analysis
*There is a plothole concerning the continuity of the story from "Exodus, Part I". In Part I, D'Anna sees Caprica-Sharon in the detention center and is shot by her. Yet in Part II, D'Anna is in Colonial One, apparently unharmed, and has not alerted the Cylons to Sharon's presence.
**However, these appear to be two distinct copies of D'Anna. They are wearing different outfits.
*Either the scenes aren't in order or Baltar is not aware of what is going on. In the Gaeta-Baltar scene, Baltar says, "The Cylons have a nuke in this complex. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is getting off this planet alive unless I stop D'Anna." But this is after most of the civilian ships have already jumped.
*It is hard to believe that the Cylons were not keeping closer tabs on the whereabouts of the launch keys -- no alarms, etc. -- and didn't notice they were gone until the attack started.
*In general, the Cylons seem to have left the planet implausibly underguarded. Considering the strategic nature of the site, as well as the well-known fact that two battlestars remained at large, one would have expected the Cylons to have an overwhelming amount of protection for the planet -- perhaps dozens of basestars.
**RDM has mentioned in his podcasts that the Cylons do have major operations elsewhere hinting at future storylines in the season. It is possible that the Cylon higher command made a strategic decision to guard the planet with what they deemed the minimal required number of basestars to defend against two battlestars.
*With the former crew of Pegasus on Galactica now, the ship has something close to its standard crew size. (Galactica's crew was deduced to be 2,693 in the episode "Water", and Pegasus's was introduced with a crew count of 1,752 in "Pegasus" (see Crew tally). William Adama notes that over half of the crew has settled on New Caprica in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I", and Lee confirms that both ships are at half-strength in "Occupation".) Military operations should be much smoother now, and repairs to the ship in general are more feasible.
*While the combination of the Pegasus and Galactica air groups give the latter battlestar a full-strength fighter wing, the Fleet has suffered the loss of its most advanced and best-armed warship. With it also went the capability to build replacement Vipers, unless one of the civilian ships can be converted for such a purpose. Defensively, the Fleet is pretty much back to the position it was in when it left the Colonies.
*It appears during the whole conflict in atmospheric combat that the Raiders were spending most of their time running from the Vipers. This may be due to the fact that Colonial Vipers have a far superior atmospheric design where Raiders are optimized for space operations. The Viper has a stabilizing vertical wing which aids the pilot in maneuvering through the atmosphere just like all real-life combat aircraft. The Raider lacks this stabilizer wing much reducing their effectiveness in aerial combat, and maneuvering thrusters are not as effective in air as in space due to resistance. This made the tactic of depositing Galactica's Vipers into a solely air-support role for evacuating ships very effective once the space-borne Raiders were decoyed away from the planet so that the Galactica only had to face the basestars, not the Raiders.
*Pegasus seems to fulfill its role just like the original Pegasus, as it fights to the end to defeat two basestars and allows Galactica along with the last of the Fleet to escape from the Cylons. However, we see explicitly that the new Pegasus is destroyed and that most of its crew, including its commander, survive. The Original Series left the fate of its Pegasus to speculation.

Notes
* "Exodus, Part II" was awarded the IGN.com Editor's choice award, following a review in which it recieved a rating of 9/10. This marks the second of such awards presented for the third season, the first of which was awarded for the season premiere Occupation.
* There is also a TOS comic named Exodus!
*This episode marks the destruction of Pegasus.
* The two parts of "Exodus" were originally planned as one episode. However, it was quickly realized that the story was far too large for one episode and it was split in two. This happened before with "Scattered", "Valley of Darkness" and "Resurrection Ship." It also helped save money because the construction of New Caprica, the extensive location shooting, the number of actors, as well as the special effects for "Exodus, Part II" were very expensive and the production was over budget.
* The Viper Mark VIIs deployed by Galactica in this episode have a yellow engine-glow instead of their usual blue. This is also the case in "Maelstrom" suggesting that it is a normal effect in atmospheric flight.
* The moment where Lee pauses to look back at the Pegasus CIC and says "thank you" is reminiscent of a similar moment in the Deep Space Nine episode "The Changing Face of Evil", in which, after the doomed Defiant is ordered to be evacuated, Captain Sisko takes a long look back at his ruined bridge. As with Pegasus, in the next shot, the ship is destroyed. Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, who wrote "Exodus, Part II", were staff writers on DS9.
*Kate Vernon on the SciFi Forums stated that Ellen Tigh knew about the poison in her drink.
*The Battle of New Caprica scenes were constructed using Lightwave, with each Cylon Raider being keyframe animated.
*When Galactica jumps several thousand feet from the surface of New Caprica a vacuum is created by the sudden loss of mass that consumes the re-entry fires engulfing its hull and the clouds surrounding it. A sonic boom and a shock wave are also produced when it jumps.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Discussing the failure of the occupation:
:Number Three: What would you have us do, Gaius?
:Gaius Baltar: Leave. Pack up your centurions, and go. Please. Go.
:Number Three: And then what? What would you do if we really just left you here? You'd live out your lives in peace and never trouble yourselves with thoughts of us again? Or would you raise your children with stories of the Cylon, the mechanical slaves who once did your bidding, only to turn against you? Killers who committed genocide against your race, the occupiers of this city until we just ran away? Would you tell them to tell the story to their children, and to their childrens' children, and nurse a dream of vengeance down through the years so that one day they could just go out into the stars and hunt the Cylon once more?
:Gaius Baltar: Blood for blood ...has to stop one day.

*Roslin heads to Colonial One:
:Roslin: My ship's up there.
:Zarek: You sure have a sense of the dramatic.

*Adama comes to accept Galacticas end:
:Admiral Adama: Then that's it. It's been an honor.

*After Hearing Pegasus Has Joined Galactica:
:Admiral William Adama: Damn You, Lee ...Thank You, Lee.

*The Pegasus is evacuated before its destruction:
:Dualla: Alright, people, let's move. Out! Let's go. (To Lee): You too, Commander.
:Commander Lee Adama: Yes, sir. (Begins to leave, then stops and looks around at Pegasus): Thank you.

*As the two Adamas reunite after the battle:
:Admiral William Adama: I guess you didn't understand my orders.
:Commander Lee Adama: I never could read your handwriting.

*Adama welcomes Col. Tigh back to Galactica:
:Adama: You did it, Saul. You brought them back.
:Tigh: Not all of them.

Cylon?
Just from speculation based on the 'not at any of the cylon meetings' line, which is so similar to Six's line.

Also if he is a cylon he could be 'Number 1,' as that so far the lower the number the higher the age of the cylon. Perhaps that makes him the 'leader', that is, if cylon's have leaders in their 'society based on unity'.
: I doubt he is Number 1. Plus, as people keep on forgetting, Cylons only appear to age -- they don't actually grow up from infancy like humans do. They're made as old as they look (or as young as they look). Period. I wouldn't be surprised if he was Number 12, thus sinking the whole "model number sorted by age" thing. -- Joe Beaudoin 17:47, 12 March 2006 (CST)
::I agree, though I'll take it a step further and say that he is likely Number 12, and likely not Number 1. == Cavil and Cylon Aging ==
Regardless of whether or not the claim about preaching longer than Tyrol has been "sucking down oxygen" is correct, Cavil's apparent age (approximately 70, going by Dean Stockwell's real age) gives us some hints about the maturation of Humano-Cylons. It would be very safe to assume that the Cylons haven't been at this for a whole 70 years--otherwise, agents would probably have been introduced into Colonial society during the first war, instead of waiting for the second, and Baltar and Adama and every other survivor wouldn't have been surprised by the fact that they "look like us." A Humano-Cylon body, pre-download, seems to be either a) generated from scratch and resembling a particular age the moment it's ready (an instant twenty-something Sharon, early thirties Six, and late sixties/early seventies Cavil), or b) Cylon genes can be temporarily tweaked to accelerate an aging process that is usually human normal. Either way, the Cylons don't seem to spend 20-plus years generating a new body. Master geneticists that they are, why would they have to wait? -- BlueResistance 22:28, 18 March 2006 (EST).
:I thought (a) was the clear implication of "Resurrection Ship, Part I" and "Downloaded" - new Cylon bodies come pre-aged. --Peter Farago 21:21, 18 March 2006 (CST)
::Those technically weren't new bodies. They are copies, not clones, remember? A "new" body is exactly duplicated from an old one. By definition all will be the same age. So any aging would take place simultaneously across the whole model. Also, Dean Stockwell is ~70 but Cavil can be younger.--Noneofyourbusiness 23:11, 18 March 2006 (EST)
::::Er, yes. That is what the Resurrection Ship (and whatever they have on their homeworld) is. :::::Every body in a Cylon model is the same. They are all twins, none is a clone of another. They are made in the resurrection Ship, that was visually implied by the whole stack of Sixes. The Cavils themeselves are proof that they are made the age they look. There are Cavils in pods looking exactly like they do. The "longer than.." comment was needed, he wouldn't say "I've been preaching for two years, since I'm a Cylon.." --Sauron18 19 March 2006
I removed the statement claiming that the humanoid cylons possibly came into existence thirty years prior to the time period in the show was contradicted by other evidence. It misunderstood the point of the previous statement (which I originally submitted), which does not argue that the infiltration of the colonies began that far back. It only suggests that the humanoid cylons came into being thirty or more years prior to the time of the series assuming Cavil was telling the truth about preaching longer than Tyrol had been sucking down oxygen. --Felix Culpa 23:38, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Strictly speaking, a 'true' atheist denies the existence of a god or gods and does not concede the possibility that "we just don't know or can't prove it." An agnostic takes the position that we do not know or cannot prove it (presently), but often actually does have a basically atheistic outlook on the universe. My opinion is that, from a purely logical standpoint, Cavil's statements make him an agnostic with an atheistic outlook. Or, in other words, he would concede that he can't REALLY prove it one way or another, but would be willing to lay a substantial wager on the non-existence of god. --Felix Culpa 13:15, 18 October 2006 (CDT)
:I think the fact that Cavil always used his hands to make quotation marks in the air each time he said "God" in "Occupation/Precipice" makes it far more likely that he's not at all on the same page as most of the other Cylons. ::You know, along the lines of not being on the same page as other Cylons...you remember that the various models of Cylon were having that discussion in Exodus Part I, and Cavil excused himself from the discussion, ostensibly because his input into it was unnecessary (if I recall correctly.) I interpreted that as Cavil essentially noting to the others that he is in disagreement as to fundamental courses of action with ALL of the other models present at the meeting. Atheism doesn't deny the existence of a god or gods, atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods. You're thinking of "strong" or "positive atheism" Philwelch 01:32, 19 October 2006 (CDT)

:That is one definition of the term 'atheism' to be sure, but its most common definition is indeed 'strong' atheism (as you have defined it), just as the most common definition of 'agnostic' implies lack of knowledge (or indeed, as a necessary consequence, a belief) as to same. Just what we mean by having a 'belief' is actually quite hard to define. But, at this point in the discussion, for purposes of probing Cavil's psyche, I think we are talking of distinctions without a difference. ;-) --Felix Culpa 17:52, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
Sleep Agent
Is Galactica Cavil a sleeper agent? I tend to think that he is because he seems to have a fake history and seems that sleepers tend defend themselves strongly when accused of being a cylon. Notice the difference betweem Galactica Cavil and Caprica Cavil in their responses to being accused. I know the Cylon Party comment does weaken the argument. Thoughts? --FrankieG 10:48, 26 June 2006 (CDT)
:He wasn't a sleeper Agent as far as we know, in fact the easiness with which he "resumed" his Cylon status indicated that he was aware. The Caprican Cavil accepted it pretty quickly because eventually he planned to tell them, it was why he was there after all. The other Cavil still had his original mission to remain in secret. I take it sleepers normally don't respond well to the whole "Hey, you're a Cylon!" thing, which may be why boxing was invented, and was why Boomer had cuffs when she resurrected. --Sauron18 11:20 26 June 2006 (CDT)
I have a problem with the following statement: "They seem to have discovered many revelations that Caprica-Six realized through her "virtual" Baltar (Downloaded). Judging by this, the Cavil copies are probably among the first to flock to Caprica's banner." I think this amounts to pure speculation, and increasingly, bad speculation as we see that Cavil is (if anything) something of a general misanthrope. At any rate, I think there is no legitimate basis for concluding that Caprica Six and the Cavils share any particular insight or common viewpoint. I'm assuming it's a mistake, and that whoever posted it confused the close captioning in LDYBII, when it says "Cavil#2" (to differentiate Cavils) and assumed it meant that was his model number, but I do not know.--Sauron18 16:00, 24 October 2006 (CDT)
Samuel Anders and his team, the Caprica Buccaneers, escape the initial destruction, then later, as the organized Caprica Resistance, raid old Colonial Fleet supply depots for anti-radiation medication and other supplies (Resistance).

The Raptor pilots of the Fleet are routinely injected with anti-radiation meds as part of their series of escort flights through a highly-irradiated star cluster (The Passage).

Notes
*Anti-radiation medications do exist on the real-world Earth. One popular drug is potassium iodide, which blocks absorption of radiation by the thyroid gland, which aids in reducing the overall absorption of radioactivity into the human body.

New Caprican loco weed, also known as Fleet Wheat, is a colloquial term for a mildly psychotropic plant discovered on New Caprica.

History
During the initial colonization of New Caprica, indigenous fauna and flora were catalogued as quickly as possible for potential uses.

Even as crops were being planted in the alluvial deposits (with some of the produce immediately earmarked for the stills run by Saul "The Rummy" Tigh), the workers clearing the resilient native plant growth made a startling discovery. As the large piles of cleared weeds and roughage was lit on fire and began to burn, workers standing downwind began to feel ... funny. Valuable time was lost as an entire shift of workers ransacked supplies for any tasty edibles, stumbling about in a daze, laughing incessantly, and expressing their love repeatedly to anyone nearby (and sometimes, inanimate objects).

Roslin's realization
One person in particular was very interested in the properties of this particular plant: ex-President and former teacher Laura Roslin. As everyone knows, teachers really know how to party ("work hard, play harder" being a common motto), and Roslin is no exception. Her exploits while tripping the light fantastic on Chamalla have been well-documented, and have helped set the human race on the path to Earth (or to extinction, depending on what propaganda mill you shop at).

Roslin immediately obtained seeds and enough raw leaf to last any three heads a lifetime and had it transported, under the cover of mid-afternoon, to her secret grow site, later referred to by Roslin as "my cabin in the woods by a stream."

Her plans were foiled by the untimely arrival of the Cylons and the subjugation of the remaining humans - President Gaius Baltar being too busy drinking, smoking (likely fumarella leaf or maybe even loco weed), and fornicating his way into a stupor to do any real governing (Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II).

The Cylon Occupation
The Cylons, naturally, outlawed the weed, and basically anything else that allowed the humans to have any fun or see any relief from their dreary existence. Alcohol, however, remained legal. Several demonstrations were held, requesting the use of loco weed for medical purposes at the very least. The Cylons response was in character: brutality. It is thought that the list of prisoners to be executed contained many weed smokers and legalization activists, as well as the typical political prisoners. Tom Zarek was probably a double-threat (Precipice).

Return to the Fleet
It is unknown whether seeds or plant stock of New Caprican loco weed were brought from the planet when the humans returned to the Fleet. It's likely, given her history, that Roslin has them growing as house plants on Colonial One.

Food shortage
A critical food shortage (The Passage) may have been caused by overeating due to what has been termed "the munchies", a side effect of the drug. It is not known whether loco weed use contributed to Fat Apollo's weight issues, but it is considered unlikely.

Description
New Caprica loco weed is an annual plant, easily distinguishable by its hand-shaped .... wait, we never really saw the plant itself. For all we know it could be a perenial. We do know that, according to Admiral Adama, "it's good" (Unfinished Business).

Possible Offshoots
Considering its relatively quick application into familiar weed cigarettes and cigars by Roslin and presumably other New Capricans, New Caprican loco weed may be related to similar plants on Kobol and on some if not all of the Twelve Colonies. It is not, however, a true weed, nor is it related to the Earth substance colloquially referred to as "weed" or "marijuana."

This article is about the Re-imagined Series Basestar. For the original version, see Basestar (TOS).

Description
In the re-imagined series, Cylon basestars (also referred to as "baseships" or "Cylon battlestars") are by far the most prominent example of Cylon presence. They easily dwarf a Colonial battlestar and appear to be technologically superior in every way, including being able to release wings of hundreds of Cylon Raiders at the same time (according to the number of launch "slots" located along each of the spires the basestar. A basestar can release as many as 792 Raiders as seen in the following images: 1, 2, and 3).

Beyond this, not much is known about the interior operations or command structure of a basestar. A basestar's size would suggest that they have a large crew complement, although there is ample evidence to suggest their operations are largely automated. There has also been no evidence to suggest that a basestar has a central autonomous commander as done on battlestars and their command hierarchy.

A basestar's weapons complement indicates missiles on a similar principle to the United States' VLS system, which is capable of launching coventional or nuclear missiles. In "scream and leap" ambushes commonly used by basestars, the use of nuclear attacks against capital targets such as Galactica appears prohibited to minimize capital fighter losses to the Cylons or damage to the basestar itself.

Two basestars were torn apart by the kinetic guns of battlestars Pegasus and Galactica in a joint mission to destroy a Cylon Resurrection Ship. It would seem that that basestars rely heavily on their Raiders for close-range defense through sheer numbers of fighters. Since a basestar does not appear to have batteries (the primary offensive/defensive weapons on battlestars), basestars appear quite vulnerable to battlestars in close-range combat (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

Encounters with Colonial Fleet
Unknown to the Colonial Fleet, a single basestar appeared over the Armistice Station, keeping in schedule with the annual armistice diplomacy talks given to the Cylons by invitation of the Colonial government. This would not have been unusual except that the Cylons had never attended an armistice meeting in the 40 years in which they were offered. Shortly after its arrival and after a Cylon agent accosts the Armistice Officer stationed there, the basestar launches missiles that destroy the station.

A few days later, the Cylons begin their genocidal attack on the Twelve Colonies. It is probable that many basestars and their fighters arrived at each of the Colonies and targeted cities on each planet, deploying nuclear missiles that detonate above the target cities, annihilating them. Several basestars are seen above the ruined planet of Caprica as Lieutenant Sharon Valerii guided her Raptor to an emergency landing on the planet during the attack. A shattered hulk of a battlestar is also seen floating above the planet (Mini-Series).

A portion of the Cylon attack fleet consisting of 3 basestars and several secondary ships such as Cylon Reconnaissance Drones, gather above Ragnar Anchorage in an attempt to ensnare Galactica as it leaves the depot station after rearming itself from stored munitions there. Galactica serves as a shield for its new civiilan Fleet to escape the fighting by using its batteries to fend off the waves of Cylon Raiders targeting the battlestar and its Viper attack fighters. The battlestar escapes the basestar attack with miminal damage (Miniseries).

Basestars chase Galactica for five days after the Ragnar battle, appearing every 33 minutes. The Cylons apparently had infiltrated one of the civilian ships, the Olympic Carrier, and were able to track it through successive Jumps. Enemy forces apparently take control of of the starliner before its 240th Jump, where then Galactica's fighters destroy the liner.

The Fleet eludes further basestar contact for several weeks. Soon after the planet Kobol was discovered by battlestar Galactica, a basestar surprises a Raptor unit en route to the planet. The basestar's fighters destroy two Raptors. Subsequently, Commander Adama devises a plan to destroy the basestar by using a Raptor fitted with a Cylon Transponder to sneak a nuclear warhead inside it. Pilot Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, a then-unknown Cylon sleeper agent, flies a Raptor along with ECO Lt. Margaret "Racetrack" Edmonson to infiltrate the inside of the basestar. While inside, they see that basestars have a vast, cavernous interior made of bio-mechanical components, without a distinct floor or ceiling. The walls appear fleshy and alive, similar to the synthetic organs filling the interior of a Raider. The basestar was pressurized, as the Raptor appeared to enter through a ventricle-like airlock, where Boomer was able to work with her helmet removed, a task made impossible in a vacuum.

Boomer and Racetrack successfully detonate the nuclear warhead, completely destroying the basestar. This was perhaps the first time since the Cylon Attack that Colonial forces successfully destroyed a basestar.

Shortly thereafter, Valerii's sleeping Cylon programming activates. She shoots Commander Adama in an assassination attempt (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II) and is subsequently killed by Specialist Cally (Resistance).

A second basestar ambushes Galactica immediately after Adama's shooting, Galactica escapes but is separated from the Fleet due to a Jump calculation error. The battlestar returns to their previous location and fends off the basestar long enough for them to obtain the correct Fleet coordinates (Scattered). This second basestar near Kobol departs for other business after Galactica reunites with the Fleet, leaving Kobol to the Colonials, save for a small squad of Cylon Centurions on the planet.

Consequently, Edmonson is now the only living member of Galactica's crew that has ever seen the inside of a basestar (Resistance).

Upon the discovery of the battlestar Pegasus, Admiral Helena Cain reveals that a Cylon fleet, consisting of two basestars and a mysterious unknown ship has been following Galactica (Pegasus).

The Colonial battlestars destroy the two basestars as part of their their mission to take out the Cylon Resurrection Ship (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

Basestars aggressively reappear after the ignominious defeat handed to them over one month before when the Cylons lure out two Raptors from Pegasus engaged in reconnaissance training with a decoy distress signal while the Raptors patrolled within a binary star cloud (The Captain's Hand). The Raptors' disappearance causes freshly-promoted Commander Garner to disregard Major Adama's advice and buck Admiral Adama's orders to stay put. Jumping near the last known location of the two Raptors, Pegasus and its next retinue of rescue/reconnaissance Raptors encounter three basestars, which unleash nuclear missiles for the first time since the fall of the Colonies, dealing Pegasus severe damage. Major Adama takes the helm and orders Pegasus to fire volleys at the core of the nearest Basestar, damaging it in kind, buying Garner time to restore coolant pressure to the FTL drive. Pegasus then Jumps safely away.

Basestars aggressively reappear after the ignominious defeat handed to them over one month before when the Cylons lure out two Raptors from Pegasus engaged in reconaissance training with a decoy distress signal while the Raptors patrolled within a binary star cloud (The Captain's Hand). The Raptors' disappearance causes freshly-promoted Commander Garner to disregard Major Adama's advice and buck Admiral Adama's orders to stay put. Jumping near the last known location of the two Raptors, Pegasus and its next retinue of reconaissance Raptors encounter three basestars, which unleash nuclear missiles for the first time since the fall of the Colonies, dealing Pegasus severe damage. Major Adama takes the helm and orders Pegasus to fire volleys at the core of the nearest Basestar, damaging it in kind, buying Garner time to restore coolant pressure to the FTL drive. Pegasus then Jumps safely away.

Basestars aggressively reappear after the ignominious defeat handed to them over one month before when the Cylons lure out two Raptors from Pegasus engaged in reconaissance training with a decoy distress signalwhile the Raptors patrolled within a binary star cloud (The Captain's Hand). Major Adama takes the helm and orders Pegasus to fire volleys at the core of the nearest Basestar, buying Garner time to restore coolant pressure to the FTL drive, allowing Pegasus and its Viper squadrons to Jump safely away.
Overview
: When a copy of Leoben Conoy is captured aboard a civilian ship, President Roslin orders he is to be interrogated, and Lieutenant Thrace is assigned the job. She finds herself facing the possibility that Conoy may have planted a bomb somewhere in the fleet.

Summary
* Laura Roslin has a Chamalla-induced dream in which she sees Leoben Conoy. She is awakened by Billy, who informs her a Cylon has been captured aboard the Gemenon Traveller.
* The Cylon turns out to be Leoben Conoy, and while Adama wants him destroyed, Roslin insists he is interrogated.
* Kara Thrace is assigned the interrogation task. Meeting with her, Adama warns her that Conoy cannot be trusted. Not that he lies, but rather he twists everything into half-truths and masks fiction with the veneer of truth.
* They briefly discuss the Cylon Raider Starbuck is still working on (You Can’t Go Home Again, Six Degrees of Separation), and Starbuck informs him good progress is being made: the avionics are now understood, and they are focusing on the FTL systems.
* Later, Sharon Valerii visits the Raider for a second time (the first being in Six Degrees of Separation), and appears to comfort it by humming.
* Tyrol arrives, and she asks if her previous comments help. He confirms they did, and asks how she came up with the idea. She claims it’s because she’s a Cylon -- something Tyrol doesn’t find remotely funny
* Elsewhere, Thrace travels by Raptor to the Gemenon Traveller. Once there, she observes Conoy, noting that he is sweating, before she enters the room in which he is being held, wanting to know what he is doing with his head on the table.
* Conoy claims to have been praying. Their religious differences are immediately outlined as she refers to “gods”, he to “God”.
* When he starts playing games with her over names, she tries to walk out – and Conoy reveals he knows who she is, which stops her. He then claims to have hidden a nuclear warhead somewhere in the fleet, which will go off in just under nine hours.
* Shaken by the fact he knows her name, Starbuck reports the news on the bomb to Adama and Roslin. Adama orders radiological searches to be made aboard all ships and tries to reassure Starbuck that Conoy could have learned her name from anywhere.
* When she returns to the holding area, Conoy continues to question her about her beliefs, outlining the key difference between humans and their religion and Cylons. A meal arrives for Starbuck and she eats, allowing Conoy to finish what is left.
* As he finishes the food, a systematic beating commences, Starbuck convinced that because he is programmed to act completely like a human, Conoy will be forced to react like a human, take the beating until the pain forces him to start talking.
* As this starts, Boomer visits Gaius Baltar in his lab and demands he runs a test on her to determine whether or not she is human. Baltar is reluctant to do so, but Six prompts him into doing it.
* Conoy’s beating fails to get him to talk about the bomb, only to talk more about God. As the subject of water has formed a lot of his analogies, Starbuck opts to up the torture by using it, and sends the guards from the room.
* When they are gone, Conoy demonstrates his supernatural strength, breaking the chains that bind his wrists and pins Thrace to the wall. He could kill her, but he doesn’t – he has something to tell her, soon. A surprise.
* On Galactica, Adama visits the cadaver of the Conoy he encountered at Ragnar Anchorage (Mini-Series), his rage almost causing him to beat the body with a telephone handset.
* On the Traveller, Starbuck commences sessions that involve holding Conoy’s head underwater for increasingly lengthy periods to try and get him to talk – convinced that he is too far from Cylon influence to transfer his consciousness to another body, should this one die.
* Conoy talks – about Starbucks’s childhood and upbringing, demonstrating he somehow knows an lot about her. The duckings continue.
* Baltar finishes a scan on a blood sample from Boomer – it confirms she is a Cylon. Terrified of what will happen if he tells her, he fakes the result to look human.
* In her private quarters on Colonial One, Roslin has another vision of Conoy, prompting her to order a shuttle to take her to the Gemenon Traveller
* On the Traveller, Starbuck halts the water torture and Conoy reveals his surprise to her: the humans will find Kobol, and Kobol will lead them to Earth. What’s more, Starbuck’s specific role is to deliver his soul to God.
* At that moment, Roslin arrives and puts a stop to the torture, as it has failed to reveal the location of the bomb.
* When Conoy has been cleaned up and dried off, she tries to reason with him, and he confesses there is no bomb; grabbing her, he whispers that Adama is a Cylon.
* Shocked by this, but her mind made up, Roslin has him ejected into space – fulfilling the sequence of events in her dream.
* Later, on the Galactica, Starbuck prays for Conoy’s soul, while Roslin meets with Adama, Conoy's words clearly having cast doubts deep in her mind.

On Caprica
* After sleeping with Helo, Valerii meets with Doral and Six and informs them of developments.
* Doral informs her that a little love nest is being set-up nearby. Six adds that she must lead Helo to it and keep him there – or kill him.
* Reacting to the instructions, Valerii returns to Helo – and goes on the run with him, leading him away from her Cylon colleagues.

Summary from SciFi.com
A Cylon, who calls himself Leobon, is discovered on one of the ships in the fleet. Commander Adama sends Kara to interrogate him — or, rather, it. The Cylon tells Kara that he planted a nuclear device on one of the ships. Although she doesn't believe it, Kara passes on the warning.

As her colleagues search for the device, Kara engages Leobon in a battle of wills. Theological debates about souls and the humanity of Cylons lead to mind games, threats, and, ultimately, torture. Taking a personal interest in what Leobon has to say, President Roslin joins the interrogation.

On Galactica, Sharon asks Baltar to try out his new Cylon-detecting technology on her.

Meanwhile, on far-off Caprica, another Sharon conspires with her Cylon associates Doral and Number Six to convince Helo to remain on the planet and start a new life.
Questions
*Is Conoy's comment to Starbuck concerning Kobol meant personally - that she will find Kobol - or at least recognise it for what it really is? (Apparently not)
*How will Roslin react to Conoy's claim about Adama? She has already demonstrated a willingness to readily accept the worst about a person without proof (her reaction to Baltar's situation in Six Degrees of Separation). (Answer)
*Why is love so vital to the Cylons? (Answer, plus Cylons believe that "God is love")
*Was Troy destroyed in an genuine accident, making it a convenient "cover" for the Cylons to create Boomer's "history", or were they responsible for the destruction of the colony? (A moot question since Sharon Valerii was never an actual human)
*Other than Silica Pathways and the substance discovered by Gaius Baltar in the cremation process of the genetic material of a Humano-Cylon, are there any other major differences between them and humans? (Answer: They have super-strength, as shown in the Mini-Series and this episode, an ability to interface their bodies with electronic devices, and a different blood structure)
*Why does Roslin run towards Leoben and away from the Marines in her dream? She already knows what he looks like from the press conference in Litmus.

Analysis
“Flesh and Bone” is another tremendously powerful story to come out of the season one arc. It is the first time that everything meshes with a synchronicity that is simply awesome: season arc development, episode arc, character growth, character revelations, religious insights, Cylon and human motivations – all combine into 42 minutes of magnetic television.

As usual, the featured actors turn in outstanding performances, with Mary McDonnell again adding depth and vulnerability to Laura Roslin. Is the President’s hardened attitude a result of her on-going adjustment to the plight of the Colonials, a direct reflection of her growing determination to beat her cancer, or a result of her acceptance that life for her may not be as rich and as full as she may once have hoped? Or is it a combination of all three? Whatever the underpinning reasons, the last few episodes have seen Roslin develop the kind of hard shell one would expect of a leader in her position; and McDonnell’s portrayal of Roslin as she goes through this transition has been outstanding.

Katee Sackhoff also shines in this episode – alongside Callum Keith Rennie, she has the most time on screen – and she again shows that for a relatively young actress, she has a broad range and depth. At every turn, Thrace’s over-confidence, her flippancy, her inborn doubts, her fear of failure, of being found out – all are so perfectly portrayed through word, look and attitude.
But the accolades this week go not to a regular member of the cast, but to Callum Keith Rennie for his portrayal of Leoben Conoy.

Rennie is perhaps best remembered for the (also Canadian-filmed) series “Due South”. At the time, he did not impress – although to be fair, he was trying to fill David Marciano’s considerable shoes. Even so, his appearance in the Battlestar Galactica mini-series also fails to engage.

But in “Flesh and Bone”, Callum Keith Rennie proves the faith the producers clearly had in him. His personification of Conoy is a marvel to watch. Not only does he evoke sympathy and concern as he is systematically beaten and tortured, he also maintains a degree of detachment towards the events around him that sufficiently reminds us that, while human-looking, his character is not truly human. By turns he is philosopher, victim, man, child, inquisitor, and agent provocateur – and in all, he is utterly convincing and absorbing. He is a mirror, held up to reflect the angst, the perceptions, bias and insecurity of the human race, as personified by Kara Thrace. Through him we also gain what appears to be a further hint of Cylon capabilities.

Conoy first turns up in Roslin’s dream – causing her to demand he is interrogated, not destroyed on being discovered. During his interrogation, he demonstrates personal information concerning Thrace’s upbringing, and shortly before his death, he again appears to Roslin, prompting her to go to the Gemenon Traveller where he can meet with her and plant a bomb potentially every bit as devastating as the nuclear warhead he claimed to have hidden somewhere in the fleet.

All of this tends to raise the question: are Cylons – or at least the Conoy model – psychic? Does the ability to transfer their conscious minds at the point of physical death enable them to do other things mentally as well?

It could be argued that Conoy’s knowledge of Thrace has been gleaned from records – perhaps her military file; maybe she revealed things to Boomer on the Galactica, and she was able to communicate them elsewhere. BUT the way in which the half-drowned Conoy talks about Thrace’s mother and upbringing seems altogether too personal, as if he is, through describing the events, reliving them – and we see this reflected in the intensity of Thrace’s look. There is more here than has been gleaned from official records and half-revealed anecdotes relayed through a third party.

“I see the universe. I see the patterns,” Conoy states with the conviction of a man speaking the truth. “I see the foreshadowing that precedes every moment of every day. It’s all there. I see it, and you don’t.” These are the words of a man convinced of the fact that he knows what is to come; how things will end, even before time has run its course, and as such, it is hard not to accept that, somehow, he has the ability to foretell the future.

Or is it merely that through words, through the persuasion of his “half-baked philosophy”, Conoy can influence, twist, turn and manipulate to bring about the events and situations he requires in order to give himself the appearance of precognition? Is there any way we, the audience, can tell if Conoy can “see” the future and thus determine how much of the truth he is telling? Well, apparently there is.

As his time runs out, he reveals his surprise to Thrace: “And I told you I had a surprise for you. Are you ready? “You are going to find Kobol, birthplace of us all. Kobol will lead you to Earth. This is my gift to you, Kara.”

You are going to find Kobol. The essence of truth – we know that this is indeed what will happen; the Colonials will indeed find Kobol; this much is apparently certain from the title of the two-parter that concludes season 1: “Kobol’s Last Gleaming”. So Conoy is telling a degree of truth.

But is he telling the whole truth? On the surface, this comment seems pretty direct. But one thing we have learnt in this series is that nothing is ever quite what it seems. Messages are always delivered in layers. And if we strip away the surface gloss to this comment, we come across a deeper meaning: "You are going to find Kobol….This is my gift to you, Kara". (While Conoy's meaning here implies that it will be Thrace who actually finds Kobol, the reality turned out different. It was Sharon Valerii who found the planet. It was Laura Roslin who confirmed that the Fleet had found Kobol (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I). It was Kara's actions that ultimately allowed the Colonials to find a bearing to Earth (Home, Part II).

Turning to Conoy’s appearance in Roslin’s dreams: is this again an indication that he is in some way “psychic” - or are Roslin’s visions of him simply a side effect of the Chamalla extract she is taking? His appearances almost seem to manipulate events and bring about the results he desires / has foreseen: his appearance in her initial dream forestalls his simple destruction on capture; his later appearance brings Roslin to the Gemenon Traveller, where he can impart his lie concerning Adama to her.

(Viewers learn later that the Chamalla did play some role in Roslin's ability to confirm Kobol, the need for the Arrow of Apollo, and her role in the search in the multi-episode story arc, starting with "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I")

But assuming for a moment the dreams are a side-effect of Roslin's treatment, what does this mean for her? Precognition would seem to fit with the parallels the series has shown with Greek mythology. Could it be that the Kamala is "helping" Roslin to become a Sybil, a seer of future events? (In effect, viewers discovered that Roslin was able to comprehend the meanings of the Pythian prophesy through the Chamalla treatments, which foretold the events the Colonials would experience.)

However, there is a third explanation: that, as Conoy states, everything that happens in this episode – indeed, everything within the series as a whole – is preordained. That there is indeed a deity manipulating things, drawing both the Colonials and Cylons towards an ultimate goal.

Away from the central action, we begin to see the pieces fall into place around Helo on Caprica, with the motivating force behind the Cylon’s activities once more focusing on love.

“Love” is a theme that resonate throughout the episode – and indeed, has resonated through the series since Six’s first on-screen appearance with Baltar. As he is interviewed for a news broadcast, she enters his house, a look of adoration on her face. Then, after the interview, as they start to make out, she asks him in a child-like voice, in need of reassurance, “Did you miss me Gaius?” Still kissing and undressing her, he replies, “Can’t you tell?” and her tone grows more petulant, “Your body misses me. What about your heart…your soul?”

Intent on sating his lust, Baltar remains flippant, “Yeah, those too.” Six’s voice returns to one of need. “Do you love me Gaius?” When he does answer, she stops him from kissing her, making him look her in the eye. “Do you love me?” It is something he cannot answer except to ask her if she is serious. For a moment there is hurt in Six’s expression – which she covers and still proceeds to have sex with him.

Do you love me? The need is real. Could it be that, in carrying her primary mission of sabotage through Baltar, Six did actually come to love him – she actually, if accidentally came to experience that one emotion, that one driving force of life that the Cylons have equated to Godhood, (“God is love”)?
If so, it would further reinforce the fact that whatever is in Baltar’s head is not a product of his own mind.

Certainly, it is the question of love that appears foremost in this episode – both with Conoy, who returns to it time and again in his references to Cylon religion, and more particularly with Valerii on Caprica, where the first question she is asked after her revelation to Doral and Six that she had sex is “Does he love you?” The question is immediately followed by a dismissive “then you’re just guessing,” when she admits he had not actually said as much.

Following the interview with Doral and Six, two things are clear: Valerii has fallen for Helo. That much is evident from the flashbacks of her time with him. She also very much shares the memories of Boomer back on Galactica – at least up until the point where Boomer left Helo on Caprica, indicating the various incarnations of a specific humanoid Cylon share experiences throughout their existence – although this may be limited by the distance between one another.

Did the Cylons anticipate that any love expressed by a human might be reciprocated by one of their own? If they wish to experience love, then it is hard to see how they could avoid coming to this conclusion. Indeed, it might well explain Doral’s question to Valerii in “Litmus” when Helo sets out to “find” her: “Are you prepared for the next step?” A comment that at the time appeared to have implications well beyond the beating she then received at the hands of Six.

Again, putting these items together – the fact that different incarnations of a Cylon humanoid share experiences and the attempts to have Helo fall in love with Valerii on Caprica – goes a long way to explaining Six’s very apparent sarcasm and vindictiveness towards Valerii, as witnessed in “Litmus” (“He doesn’t love you,” and the unnecessarily-harsh beating she then gives Valerii), and her jealousy towards Valerii shown in this episode (“She acts like one of them, thinks like one of them. She is one of them”). Why? Because if Baltar’s Six did indeed fall in love with Baltar, then Six on Caprica may well have experienced some of it for herself – a vicarious thrill, the very thing the Cylons seek – but it is down to another to achieve the goal of having a human fall in love with her, not Six.

Layers in layers, clues and counter-clues, wheels within wheels. All are revealed and all light the path of the story while simultaneously obscuring the truth behind what is happening. Glimpses and shadows of what might be happening, and what might yet come to pass are shown; but like the insidious nature of Conoy’s half-truths and riddles, they serve to weave a story that even here, more than half-way through season one, inspires discussion, evokes enthusiasm and engages the imagination. Long may it continue!

All told, “Flesh and Bone” is the strongest story yet to come out of Battlestar Galactica – more than that, it is one of the most thought-provoking and evocative 42 minutes of television drama ever broadcast.

Notes
*This episode takes place within 24 hours of those portrayed in "Six Degrees of Separation"
*Doctor Cottle has apparently been successful in his quest for Chamalla – Roslin is now using it in her fight against cancer
*There are 47,954 survivors in the Fleet, presumably including Galactica’s crew, as the figure has fluctuated between 45,000 and 50,000 over the past few weeks in rounded figures. This represents a net loss of 18 since "33", with doubtlessly uncertain census counts throughout the interim
*Laura Roslin may have precognition, and / or Cylons may be psychic
*Boomer believes her family were all killed – together with almost her entire past in a “tragedy” that destroyed the colony of Troy
*Baltar’s Cylon detector works. It takes "a couple of minutes" to process Boomer's sample
*Baltar now knows Boomer is a Cylon
*Leoben Conroy's execution via ejection from an airlock is relatively "unspectacular" compared to similar sequences in many Science Fiction films. Whether the decision not to show his death in a more gruesome fashion may owe as much to Broadcast Standards & Practices as it does to scientfic accuracy, it is at least more line with what is known about human physiology and hard vacuum
*The "R&D TV Animation" skit during the credits is a take-off of the infamous Superbowl XXXVIII half-time "wardrobe malfunction". Ron Moore starts singing and David Eick tears the left brest of his shirt off.

Noteworthy Dialogue
<i>Conoy to Starbuck, towwards the end of his interrogation, just before Roslin's arrival</i>

<b>Conoy:</b> Each of us plays a role; each time a different role. Maybe the last time I was the interrogator and you were the prisoner. The players change, the story remains the same. And this time – this time – your role is to deliver my soul unto God. Do it for me. It’s your destiny. And mine. (PAUSE) And I told you I had a surprise for you. Are you ready? You are going to find Kobol, birthplace of us all. Kobol will lead you to Earth. This is my gift to you, Kara.

Battle to destroy the Cylon Resurrection Ship in the hopes of causing the Cylons to rethink their plans for the Fleet.

When the battlestar Pegasus reunited with the fleet led by the battlestar Galactica its commanding officer, Admiral Cain revealed that she had been tracking a Cylon fleet, and upon reviewing Galactica's logs surmised that this same Cylon fleet had been following Galactica (possibly for months). Sketchy long-range reconaissance surveillance missions by Pegasus had revealed that the Cylon fleet consisted of 2 basestars, roughly a dozen support ships, and one unidentifiable vessel, much larger than a basestar, which the fleet appeared to be protecting. Admiral Cain and Commander Adama realized that it must be valuable to the Cylons, and began planning an operation to pool their resources to attack the Cylon fleet and destroy it.

However, in the meantime Admiral Cain began re-assigning valuable Galactica personnel to Pegasus, such as CAG Captain Lee Adama and Lt. Kara Thrace, and Lt. Karl Agathon and Chief Galen Tyrol were arrested for killing Lt. Thorne of Pegasus when he attempted to rape a Cylon prisoner to torture it. When Cain decided to subject them both to summary executions without court martial, Commander Adama ordered Vipers and a Raptor to go to Pegasus and take them back, resulting in a tense standoff.

At that moment, Starbuck returned from an illicit recon mission to the Cylon fleet. With the knowledge and reconnaissance obtained on the Resurrection Ship by Dr. Gaius Baltar (through Gina) and Captain Kara Thrace respectively, Admiral Helena Cain and Commander William Adama know that the Resurrection Ship is a safety net for the Cylon operatives that may be operating in the Fleet. With this safety net removed, the Cylons must seriously reconsider their actions that are made against the Fleet. If an Cylon agent's body were to die without another body to store their transmitted consciousness, not only would the Cylons lose vital intelligence on Fleet operations, but the agent's consciousness would be permanently lost.

Pegagus CAG Captain Thrace taps once more into her unconventional military thinking in formulating an effective attack plan, which draws the Cylons to the battlestars and a trap, rather than the other way around. In the plan, the Fleet, consisting only of Galactica and her original civilian ships, congregate near a handful of ships that appear to be managing mining operations. When the Cylons engage, the Fleet will Jump away. but a few of civilian ships will appear to have problems engaging their FTL drives and attempt to escape at sublight speeds, holding the Cylon fleet in place while their Raiders are drawn away from their basestars. Moments later, Galactica and Pegasus Jump in and begin attacking both basestars. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Lee Adama uses the Blackbird to sneak up upon the Resurrection Ship and destroy her FTL drive with a missile to prevent its escape, while the entire complement of fighters from both battlestars, led by Thrace, pummel the Resurrection Ship and destroy it (Resurrection Ship, Part I).

The attack is successfully implemented with minimal losses on the Colonial side. The Blackbird stealth fighter collides with a downed Raptor after Adama's attack, destroying the fighter. Lee Adama ejects and is successfully retrieved by Galacticas SAR Raptor. He recovers from oxygen deprivation as his flight suit was punctured during the ejection process.

Shortly after the destruction of the Resurrection Ship and at least one Basestar, surviving Cylon forces jump away, handing the Colonials a significant victory (Resurrection Ship, Part II).

:This article discusses the two Viper-class fighters seen in the Re-imagined Series. For information on the Viper used in the Original Series, see Viper (TOS).

The Viper is the Colonial Defense Force's primary space superiority fighter / attack craft. Capable of atmospheric flight, the Viper is a single-seat craft mounting two kinetic energy weapons (KEWs), as well as having hardpoints beneath the wings for mounting missiles, munitions pods and other ordnance (The Hand of God).

The Viper was originally introduced into Colonial service shortly before the outbreak of the Cylon War. However, it was the Mark II variant, designed specifically for use with the new Colonial battlestars that is best remembered.

The Mark II served with distinction throughout the Cylon War, proving a capable fighting vehicle that won reknown across the Twelve Colonies and is regarded as one of the reasons the Colonials did not suffer defeat at the hands of the Cylons.

The Mark II remained in service after the end of the war, but was subsequently superceded by newer models. At the time of the renewed Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies, the Mark VII was the front-line variant of the Viper design, retaining the Mark II general layout but using fully networked systems providing superior battle management and fight information for the pilot.

Ironically, it was the incorporation of the new integrated systems that prevented the majority of Mark VII's from being effective during the Cylon attack: as with the majority of Colonial Fleet, the Mark VII suffer fatal computer system failures on contact with Cylon forces. Thanks to a Cylon agent's relationship with Dr. Gaius Baltar, scientist and programmer of the navigation software project, the navigational software in use onboard the majority of Colonial Fleet vessels contained backdoors that allow the Cylons to infiltrate a vessel's network by wireless signals and disable its power systems. While the problem could be overcome by removing the navigational upgrade compromised by the Cylons, this information is not discovered in time to be of major benefit to the surprised and hard-pressed Colonial forces.

Atmospheric Operations
The Viper is designed for atmospheric as well as space-based operations. However, Vipers consume more fuel during atmospheric operations than in the vacuum of space: once in an atmosphere, the engines must run continuously to retain airflow over the wing lifting surfaces. Depending on the composition of the atmosphere itself, this can place severe strain on the Viper's engines (You Can't Go Home Again).

Due to their wing configuration, Vipers may also suffer from poor handling at low speeds within an atmosphere.

Life Support
Viper cockpits are pressurised and heated, but they are flown with the pilot wearing a flight suit that is capable of providing full life support should ejection be required (You Can't Go Home Again). The life support systems are built-in to the back of the pilot's seat itself, together with the flight harness. Following an ejection, the back of the seat separates automatically, effectively becoming a backpack for the pilot (Act of Contrition).

Should ejection take place within an atmosphere, the life support backpack / seat back also incorporates a parachute.

Notes
Since Galactica only had 40 Viper Mark II's aboard, they needed as many fighters as possible, thus the remaining Mark VII's were refitted and stripped of their advanced computer systems. However, since this is not how the Mark VII was designed, it makes the craft increasingly difficult to handle and can only be flown by the most experienced pilots such as Apollo and Starbuck. Galactica has roughly 6-8 Mark VII's on board after the Cylon attack ("Scattered", "Flight of the Phoenix"). (source: Scifi.com series website)

Layout
The Viper is a long, sleek vehicle that can be split into two parts, fore and aft.

*Fore section: comprises the nose back to the cockpit. This contains the forward RCS systems for manoeuvring the craft; the forward landing gear; the main avionics and sensor packages, plus the single-seat cockpit itself
*Stern section: comprises the main engines, fuel tanks, wings and vertial stabiliser. The wings themselves contain the kinetic energy weapons ("guns") and their munitions storage and feeds. Hardpoints beneath the wings allow missiles, munitions pods and other items to be rack-mounted (The Hand of God). The wings roots contain the main landing gear. This section of a Viper also contains a number of RCS manoeuvring packs.

The stern section of a Viper is distinctive because of the offset "intakes" mounted just behind the cockpit. The port / starboard "intake" nacelles incorporate small but powerful reverse thrust engines that can quickly counter a Viper's forward momentum in an emergency (The Hand of God).
Overview
: The Cloud 9's lounge is under attack by terrorists who are convinced that Sharon Valerii is playing the military. The leader of this quartet, Sesha Abinell, demands that the invaluable Valerii be brought to her -- otherwise Ellen Tigh, Anastasia Dualla, Lee Adama, Billy Keikeya and others will be executed.

Summary
*Lee Adama, Ellen Tigh and Anastasia Dualla find themselves in a hostage situation aboard Cloud 9.

*Three men and a woman named Sesha Abinell have taken them hostage. Sesha's husband was killed aboard the Greenleaf when the Cylons attacked it ten weeks ago, and she decided to exact vengeance.

*Sesha demands that Admiral Adama and President Roslin turn over Cylon Sharon Valerii to her, seeking Valerii's life in compensation for her husband's.

*The Marines, with the help of Kara Thrace, make an incursion to try and regain control of the situation by force, but it does not go well. Two are killed, along with one of the hostage-takers. Lee is wounded badly, and the event only exacerbates the already tense situation.

*Sesha is infuriated that Adama and Roslin continue to allow one of their greatest enemies to live in their midst, even caged. She believes that Sharon is compromising the security of the fleet, and that the Fall of the Twelve Colonies was due to similar Cylon infiltration of the military.

*The situation prompts Adama to once again consider the value of the Cylon Sharon to him. He talks to Sharon, who reminds Adama that she saved the fleet five or six times. Adama asks if she would reveal the identities of other Cylon agents in the fleet, and she says no.

*Adama agrees to give the terrorists the dead body of Sharon Valerii in return for the hostages. However, he gives them the dead copy of Galactica-Sharon. By the time the terrorists realize the ploy, they fall under attack by Marines. In the chaos, Billy Keikeya joins in the assault, protecting Anastasia Dualla and the injured Lee Adama. However, he is quickly shot to death.

*As Dualla stays with Lee in the infirmary, promising to stay with him until he recovers, Laura Roslin grieves the death of Billy, who had become "the closest thing [she] had to family".

Questions
* Who leaked out the information that Valerii was on Galactica?
* Are members of Demand Peace still on Galactica? Are they part of Admiral Adama's crew?
* Who will become Roslin's new assistant? Was there a replacement groomed for the position at all previous to the events in this episode?
* What will happen to Billy's cadaver? Will he be buried in space or stored in the morgue?
* Where did Abinell and her people get the weapons? Were they purchased from the Black Market?
* Now that Lee Adama's been shot, will it only worsen his depression?
* What was Ellen Tigh playing at? (She practically gives away Thrace's cover and announces that she is the wife of Galacticas XO.) What was the purpose? Was there one at all?
