The '''Battle of the Resurrection Ship''' is ''Galactica's'' second offensive against the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]]. Aided with a second battlestar, they attack the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] [[Resurrection Ship]] in the hopes of causing the Cylons to rethink their plans for chasing [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]].

When battlestar ''Pegasus'' reunites with the larger remnant of [[The Fleet (RDM)|humanity]] led by the battlestar ''Galactica'', its commanding officer, Admiral [[Helena Cain|Admiral Cain]] reveals that ''Pegasus'' had been tracking a Cylon fleet, and upon reviewing ''Galactica's'' logs surmises that this same Cylon fleet had been following ''Galactica'' and her [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], possibly for months. Earlier long-range reconnaissance missions by ''Pegasus'' revealed that the Cylon fleet consisted of 2 basestars, roughly a dozen support ships, and one unidentifiable vessel, much larger than a [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]], which the Cylon fleet appeared to be protecting. Admiral Cain and Commander [[William Adama]] realize the probable value of the ship to the Cylons, and begin planning an operation to pool their resources to attack the Cylon fleet.

[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] returns from an illicit recon mission to the Cylon fleet, using the [[Blackbird]] stealth fighter to take dramatically detailed photos of the unknown ship. The name of the ship, the [[Resurrection Ship]], is discovered by Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]] through the captive [[Cylon agent]], [[Gina]]. Thrace, Admiral Cain and Commander Adama determine that the Resurrection Ship was a safety net for the Cylons chasing the Fleet and [[Cylon agent|hiding within it]]. With this safety net removed, the Cylons would seriously reconsider pursuing the Fleet as closely. If a Cylon's body were to die without another body to store their transmitted consciousness, not only would the Cylons lose vital intelligence on Fleet operations, but the Cylon's consciousness would be permanently lost.

New ''Pegasus'' [[CAG]] Captain Thrace taps [[The Hand of God (RDM)|once more]] into her unconventional military thinking in formulating an effective attack plan, which will draw the Cylons to the battlestars and a trap, rather than the other way around. In the plan, the Fleet, consisting only of ''Galactica'' and her original civilian ships, would congregate near a handful of ships that appeared to be managing mining operations. When the Cylons engaged, the Fleet would [[FTL|Jump]] away, but a few civilian ships would pretend to have problems engaging their FTL drives and attempt to escape at sublight speeds, drawing the Raiders far away from their basestars. Just before the Raiders would close in, the remaining decoy civilian ships would Jump away. Moments later, ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' will Jump to within firing range of both basestars and engage them head-on. Meanwhile, Lieutenant [[Lee Adama|Lee "Apollo" Adama]] use the [[Blackbird]] to sneak up upon the Resurrection Ship to surgically destroy her [[FTL]] drive with a missile to prevent its escape, while the entire complement of fighters from both battlestars, led by Thrace, would pummel the Resurrection Ship and destroy it ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

The attack plan is successfully implemented with minimal losses on the Colonial side. Without their fighter complements and with no gun batteries of their own, the basestars are no match for the combined gun batteries of ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', which tear through the basestars, destroying one and crippling (probably destroying) the other.

Moments after disabling the Resurrection Ship's FTL drive, the Blackbird collides with a downed [[Raptor]] after Adama's attack, destroying the fragile stealth fighter. Lee Adama manages to eject and, in the process, suffers a puncture in his [[flight suit]]. Apollo drifts freely in the middle of space, viewing the battle from a unique angle as he begins to succumb to [[Wikipedia:hypoxia|hypoxia]]. He is rescued by [[Margaret Edmondson|Racetrack]]'s [[SAR]] [[Raptor]] from ''Galactica''.

Shortly after the destruction of the Resurrection Ship and at least one basestar, the surviving Cylon forces Jump away, marking a significant Colonial victory ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

==Strategic impact==

The strategic impact of the Battle of the Resurrection Ship marked the first time since the beginning of the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Second Cylon War]] that multiple Colonial battlestars engaged multiple Cylon basestars in battle. The Fall of the Twelve Colonies had been less a battle and more a one-sided slaughter of the Colonials by the Cylons. The ensuing attempts by ''Galactica'' to beat off the Cylons chasing the civilian refugee fleet it was shepherding and ''Pegasus<nowiki>'</nowiki>'' hit-and-run guerrilla attacks on Cylon assets had never reached the level of decisively defeating a major Cylon fleet and forcing them from the battlefield (''Galactica<nowiki>'</nowiki>s'' previous [[Battle of Kobol (RDM)|destruction of a basestar]] was the result of sneaking a nuke inside through subterfuge, and not open combat).

Following this defeat to the Colonial Fleet, the Cylons lose the combat initiative they had maintained since their opening attack six months previously. After this battle, the Cylons became afraid to commit their forces to major strikes, and stop attacking the Fleet ''en masse''. While before, a single basestar would confidently Jump in and wade into ''Galactica'' and her air wing (as in the second half of the [[Battle of Kobol (RDM)|Battle of Kobol]]), the Cylons are aware that such an attack now would result in their ''permanent'' deaths, and for a time stop actively chasing the Fleet for months following the destruction of the Resurrection Ship. The entire Cylon strategy in the war changes. Instead of constantly trying to destroy the entire [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] guarded by ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', the Cylons focused on smaller, low-risk goals, achieved by hit-and-run attacks on targets of opportunity. For a full month, while the Colonials conduct mining operations in an asteroid belt, a squadron of Cylon Raiders, led by the ace Raider nicknamed "[[Scar (Raider)|Scar]]," wreaks havoc on the Colonial's Viper squadrons using hit-and-run strikes, before finally being killed by [[Louanne Katraine|Kat]] and Starbuck. Using the metals mined during this operation, the Colonial Fleet manufactures two full Viper squadrons, beginning to recover their losses ([[Scar]]). Even two months after the battle, in the [[Battle of the Binary Star System]], the Cylons resort to a trap and disproportionate numbers rather than trying to directly engage the Colonial Fleet as they had in the past ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

==Note==
The Battle of the Resurrection Ship has many similarities to the [[Wikipedia:Battle of Midway|Battle of Midway]]. In both, the strategic tide of the war changed with a decisive battle. At Midway, the Japanese fleet was caught off guard when the ''USS Yorktown'', which they had presumed was destroyed or crippled, appeared during the battle and increased the forces available to the Americans. In this battle, the Cylons were surprised by the appearance of ''Pegasus'', long presumed destroyed in the initial Cylon attack, appeared and doubled the forces available to the Colonials. Finally, Apollo's experience of ejecting in the middle of the battle and watching it unfold around him is based on the real life experience of Ensign [[Wikipedia:George Gay|George Gay]] during the Battle of Midway. George Gay's plane was shot down and he witnessed the entire battle while floating in the ocean.
While ''Pegasus'' was advanced enough to have the [[Command Navigation Program]] installed, which the Cylons used as a backdoor, ''Pegasus'' had just checked in to the [[Scorpian Fleet Shipyards]] for a three-month refit at the time of the Cylon attack. As such, almost all of its networked [[Computers|computer]] systems were offline. As a result, the Cylons were not able to immobilize the ship using computer infiltration. Combined with the sheer luck of the multiple targets that the Cylons enjoyed, the nuclear detonations temporarily blinded the Cylon [[DRADIS]]. Her options limited, Admiral Cain ordered her ship to [[Blind jump|randomly jump without a coordinates check]].

While saving the battlestar, the risky blind jump was not the end of their troubles. An indeterminate amount of time later, a [[Cylon agent]] known as [[Gina]] allowed a party of [[Cylon Centurion]]s to board the ship, resulting in approximately 700 deaths. When Gina was discovered, she killed 7 men before she was subdued. Once imprisoned, ''Pegasus''' commander instituted a new policy of Cylon interrogation for Gina: by brutal gang-rape.

After their escape, ''Pegasus'' occupied itself with hit-and-run attacks on various Cylon assets. It participated in a bold assault on a staging area filled with fifteen squadrons of [[Raider]]s. When Cain's long-time [[Executive officer]] expressed hesitancy to launch the ships' fighters against such odds, Cain publicly executed him on the bridge and promoted [[Jack Fisk]] to replace him. Fisk tells this story (and later recants it) while drunk to Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]], which Tigh believed to be true when he recounts it in turn to Commander Adama.

Some time later, ''Pegasus'' discovered that a Cylon fleet it was tracking appeared to be jumping, not randomly, but to systems with natural resources. The battlestar accidentally encountered [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]] led by battlestar ''[[Galactica]]'' when ''Pegasus'' jumped ahead to scout the Cylon target's projected next position (as it turned out, the Cylons were jumping to systems ''Galactica'' had passed through or explored). Cain assumes overall command of the Fleet and began transferring supplies and many personnel between the two battlestars, including Captain [[Lee Adama]] and Lieutenant [[Kara Thrace]]. Cain appeared unconcerned with the needs of the civilians and their ships, a problem noted to Commander Adama by President [[Laura Roslin]].

Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] mentioned during his interrogation by Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] that he served aboard a number of battlestars in his military career, including ''Pegasus'' ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]). If Admiral Cain ever knew him during this time, she makes no mention of it, and has no reservations sentencing him and [[Karl Agathon]] to death when they inadvertently kill Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]], Cain's chief "Cylon interrogator". [[William Adama]], commander of ''Galactica'', refuses to permit the execution, precipitating an armed standoff between the two ships ([[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]).

The battlestar commanders later set aside their animosity and join forces to successfully destroy the Resurrection Ship. However in the midst of celebration, Cain is killed by Gina, who escapes from the battlestar ([[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]).

Admiral Cain is succeeded by [[Jack Fisk]], who in turn is murdered after running afoul of the Fleet's illicit black market ([[Black Market]]). ''Pegasus'' is briefly commanded by engineer-turned-commander [[Barry Garner]], who dies saving the ship during the [[Battle of the Binary Star System]]. ''Pegasus''' final commander was [[Lee Adama]], with his wife [[Anastasia Dualla]] later serving as his XO.

''Pegasus'' becomes unofficially known as "The Beast" within the Fleet, although it is not known if the nickname came from her tenacity in combat or the battlestar's sordid crew history ([[The Captain's Hand]]).

==New Caprica==

Following the founding of [[New Caprica]], ''Pegasus'' is assigned to the Orbital Defense Force that protects the planet. During this time, Commander [[Lee Adama]] keeps an emergency supply of medication aboard for the pilots, despite the fact that their crew are severely depleted due to colonization of the planet. One year after the founding the colony, the Cylons return in force. Unable to defend the planet, ''Pegasus'' and the remaining ships orbiting the planet jump away ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]).

Four months later, ''Pegasus'' and ''Galactica'' plan a rescue mission to recover the people left on the planet ([[Occupation]]). While the plans initially called for the involvement of ''Pegasus'' in the recovery, Admiral Adama decides that the remnants of the Fleet, the last free people of humanity, should not be left unprotected if things went awry. Adama takes ''Galactica'' in the rescue effort without ''Pegasus'', ordering his son to stay with the Fleet at a rendezvous point to await their return ([[Precipice]], [[Exodus, Part I]]).

Despite Adama's orders, ''Pegasus'' leaves her fighters to protect the remains of the Fleet and returns to New Caprica to participate in the rescue. ''Pegasus'' jumps into the fight and finds ''Galactica'' under fire from four Cylon basestars. ''Pegasus'' destroys one of the baseships with her forward batteries and attracts the attention of the others while ''Galactica'' repairs its FTL drive and prepares to jump away.

''Pegasus'' reels from the onslought of missiles from the remaining Cylon basestars. It becomes clear to Admiral Adama that ''Pegasus's'' trip was one-way. Following ''Galactica's'' jump, Commander Adama sets his battlestar's batteries on auto-fire and orders the crew to abandon ship, pausing just long enough to give his dying command a quiet thanks. As the evacuation Raptors jump away, ''Pegasus'', now completely unmanned, collides with a basestar, destroying it. As ''Pegasus'' explodes, the remains of her starboard [[flight pod]] collides with another basestar, destroying it as well ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

==A Lost Civilian Fleet==

It was later revealed that ''Pegasus'' originally had its own small fleet of 15 civilian ships, found about a week after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. The tiny caravan was equipped with FTL drives and weapons. Rather than defending them (as ''Galactica'' had at [[Ragnar Anchorage]]), Admiral Cain saw them as potential spare parts for ''Pegasus'', and decided that ''Pegasus' '' military needs were a priority over them. The civilian ships were stripped for parts, including their weapons and FTL drives, marooning them and leaving them completely at the mercy of the Cylons when Cain left.

However not all of the civilians were left to die. After looking over the passenger lists, Cain selected those civilians who she thought would be of value (such as [[Peter Laird]], an aeronautical engineer), forcibly drafting them into her crew. However, fifteen 'selectees' aboard the civilian transport ''[[Scylla]]'' were traveling with their families and refused to leave without them. Admiral Cain ordered her marines to kill two families (men, women, and children) to shock the rest into submission. ''Pegasus'' then abandoned the civilian ships to pursue Admiral Cain's campaign of hit-and-run attacks against Cylon forces ([[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]).

==Equipment==
[[Image:TheEnemysGateIsDown3.jpg|thumb|right|Pegasus taking heavy fire]]
In the [[Pegasus (Extended Version)|Extended Cut]] of the episode "Pegasus" Admiral Cain states that the ship is nearly twice the size of ''Galactica'', but needs only half the crew. This probably refers to either the dual [[landing bay|landing bays]] or the ship's volume, but not its length. The decreased manpower requirement stems from increased computerization and automation. This is also evident in the comparatively small size of the ''Pegasus'' [[CIC]].
[[Image:PegasusForeBatteries.jpg|thumb|right|Pegasus firing her forward batteries]]

''Pegasus'' operates at least four [[Viper Mark VII]] squadrons, all verbally identified in the episode "[[The Captain's Hand]]":
*[[Red Squadron (RDM)|Red Squadron]]
*[[Yellow Squadron]]
*[[Green Squadron]]
*[[Blue Squadron (RDM)|Blue Squadron]]

It is possible that these designations are just [[wireless]] code names and not formal, standing squadrons. The colors and group leaders could be assigned on an ad-hoc basis, while a more formal structure exists in the background; such as the [[Vigilantes]] on ''Galactica''. However, these squadrons are also marked on DRADIS as such. ([[The Captain's Hand]])

''Pegasus'' has [[Viper Mark VII]] production facilities ([[Scar]]). This is a capability that would allow the ship to be self sufficient on extended deployments, so long as the battlestar has sufficient means to gather the raw materials necessary for construction.

In "[[Resurrection Ship, Part II]]" ''Pegasus'' is shown to have built in electronic countermeasure (ECM) generators as it deviates missiles away from the ship.

==Crew==
====Senior Staff at Time of Destruction====
*Commander [[Lee Adama]] - Commanding Officer
*Lieutenant [[Anastasia Dualla]] - [[Executive Officer]]
*Lieutenant [[Hoshi]] - Communications or [[Tactical Officer]]

====Former Members of the Senior Staff====
*Admiral [[Helena Cain]] - Commanding Officer (Killed by [[Gina]])
*Commander [[Jack Fisk]] - Commanding Officer (Killed by racketeers in the [[Black market (organization)|black market]])
*Commander [[Barry Garner]] - Commanding Officer (Killed in action)
*Captain [[Cole Taylor]] - [[CAG|Commander, Air Group]] (Demoted by Admiral Cain)
*Captain [[Kara Thrace]] - Commander, Air Group (Replaced Cole Taylor in "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I]]" but transferred to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' in "[[The Captain's Hand]]")
*Lieutenant [[Alistair Thorne]] - Cylon Interrogator (Killed by [[Galen Tyrol]])

==Notes==
*According to [[David Eick]]'s video blog, it would have been impossible to afford creating new sets for the entire interior of ''Pegasus'' on the budget of an episodic television show. This expense was circumvented when a year beforehand Ron D. Moore and David Eick bought (for next to nothing) the abandoned sets of the failed pilot for the FOX network's "Lost In Space" remake, directed by John Woo. The production team then held onto the sets hoping to find some later use for them, eventually using them for "[[Pegasus (episode)|Pegasus]]". The sets were then radically redesigned and painted to give them the aesthetic look of ''Galactica'', but sleeker and more advanced.
*This ship is named after [[w:Pegasus|the winged horse from Greek mythology]].
The '''Fall of the Twelve Colonies''' (also called the '''Cylon Attack''' or '''Cylon Holocaust''') is a devastating, genocidal attack which marks renewed conflict between the humans of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol and their robotic Cylon creations, after a cessation of contact between the two, for forty years.

The Cylons soften up the Twelve Colonies for attack by infiltrating their military and civilian society with new [[Cylon agent|human-appearing models]] of Cylon. One such copy, [[Caprica-Six|Number Six]], seduces the brilliant Dr. [[Gaius Baltar]], fooling him into contract work that gives her access to the [[Colonial Defense Mainframe]]. Six's work compromises Baltar's [[Command Navigation Program]], writing in many programmer [[backdoor]]s.

After Baltar's CNP is sufficiently distributed throughout the [[Colonial Fleet]], the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylons]] return from their [[Cylon War|forty-year exile]] with a vengeance. The backdoors in the CNP enable the Cylons to use various electronic attacks that completely bypass Colonial electronic defenses<ref>Contrary to popular opinion, the Cylons did ''not'' transmit a virus through the CNP, but could electronically command any CNP-equipped ship to shut itself down.</ref>.

Entire Viper squadrons lose power upon engaging the enemy, while the Cylons are able to virtually shut down the Colonial Defense network "without firing a shot." The great battlestars suffer an abnormally-high number of "equipment malfunctions," up to and including total power loss. Cylon infiltration of Colonial systems, when combined with the "complete surprise" they achieve, enable them to sweep the Colonial Fleet aside with minimal losses.

Battlestar ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'', approximately 300 million miles from Caprica<ref>See [[Science in the Re-imagined Series]] for this calculation, based on data from the Miniseries.</ref> is the only Colonial ship unaffected by the Cylon's computer infiltration as its computer systems were never networked, and as such, could not use the network-dependent CNP. This anti-infiltration policy, used in the First Cylon War, was maintained by all of ''Galactica's'' commanders, including [[William Adama]], through peacetime and despite the advances in Colonial technology.

The Cylons proceed to bombard each of the Twelve Colonies' population and strategic centers with nuclear bombs, including [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. The attack succeeds beyond even the Cylons' most optimistic projections ([[Downloaded]]).

[[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Picon|Picon]] [[Fleet Headquarters]] is destroyed in the opening wave of the attack, as are 30 battlestars<ref>According to Kara Thrace in the Miniseries, the number of battlestars lost to this point was "a quarter of the Fleet."</ref>. Admiral [[Nagala]] is reported to have taken command of the [[Colonial Fleet (RDM)|Colonial Fleet]] aboard battlestar ''[[Atlantia (RDM)|Atlantia]]''.

On news of the attack, to protect its people as well as for military readiness, the Colonial [[Government]] orders an full stop on hundreds of civilian vessels in the solar system, leaving them stranded in space around the various colonies.

While the primary fight against the Cylons centers around the orbit of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Virgon|Virgon]], according to a tactical plot of all ships in the solar system by Lieutenant [[Felix Gaeta|Gaeta]], ''Galactica'' itself prepares for possible incoming enemies, despite two major problems. First, ''Galactica'' had earlier destroyed its own large munitions as part of its decommissioning ceremony<ref>This event occurs in a deleted scene of the Miniseries.</ref>. Second, the battlestar had plenty of pilots, but few Vipers left to fly. Its last Viper Mark VII squadron left the battlestar after the decommissioning ceremonies and are soon destroyed in a Cylon attack.

Fortunately, the battlestar held 40 [[Viper Mark II]]s onboard as part of its recent decommissioning ceremony and [[Galactica Museum|expected conversion into a museum]]. These Vipers were an old but robust design that were resistant to infiltration and were never equipped to use the Command Navigation Program that doomed other Colonial fighters.

''Galactica'' re-arms and deploys the fighters, repelling several attacking squadrons of [[Cylon Raider]]s in her first sortie of the new war. The battlestar survives a direct hit from a Cylon tactical nuclear warhead, but not without a loss of 85 of its ship's crew in the port [[flight pod]] when damage to the fire suppression system necessitated the venting of the pod's atmosphere to prevent the battlestar's fuel lines from igniting and destroying the ship.

''Galactica'' soon receives word that battlestar ''Atlantia'', as well as many more battlestars, are lost in the fighting. Commander Adama assumes command of whatever was left of the Colonial military fleet, and sends a [[wireless]] transmission to any surviving Colonial forces to rendezvous at [[Ragnar Anchorage]] to prepare for counterattack.

Ragnar Station also held desperately needed munitions for the battlestar's point-defense batteries and more ammo for her fighters. ''Galactica'' successfully [[FTL|Jumps]] to Ragnar, skipping past the bulk of the Cylon fleet that stood in her way near Virgon.

After Picon was nuked, the Colonial [[Government]], headed by President [[Richard Adar]], broadcast an unconditional surrender, which the Cylons completely ignore. President Adar and all senior Colonial government officials, save for spacebound Secretary of Education [[Laura Roslin]], are presumed killed or missing. The [[Case Orange]] contingency mechanism activates to seek out any remaining government officials, a signal of which only Roslin apparently acknowledges. Sworn in on the government-chartered passenger liner ''[[Colonial Heavy 798]]'', Roslin becomes the new President of the Twelve Colonies.

Roslin immediately begins locating other stranded Colonial civilian and military vessels to form a caravan. Roslin's caravan efforts also retrieve at least three Viper Mark VII fighters and finds Lt. [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon "Boomer" Valerii]] and her [[Raptor]], the only survivor of ''Galactica's'' last fighter squadron. Valerii is tasked with and successfully locates additional civilian craft before a Cylon Raider scout finds the convoy.

Fearing imminent attack but unable to rescue any passengers from the convoy's [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight]] ships in time, Roslin orders the FTL-capable ships to Jump to Ragnar and to ''Galactica's'' safety. The sublight ships and their passengers are destroyed by at least six Raiders armed with nuclear missiles.

''Galactica'' is not the only battlestar to escape the attacks. An attack at the Fleet Shipyards at Scorpia destroys two battlestars, but battlestar [[Pegasus (RDM)|''Pegasus'']], only partially operational at the time, [[Fall of the Scorpian Fleet Shipyards|manages to escape]].
[[Galactica type battlestar|Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' launches a daring mission to occupy the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon force's]] attention as the majority of the Colonial citizens escape from Cylon occupation on [[New Caprica]].

Greatly outnumbered, Admiral [[William Adama]] enacts an elaborate plan that relies on a squadron of [[Raptor]]s (with a [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] escort squadron) to fire a series of [[swallow]]s that collectively mimic the EM signatures of the Colonial battlestars. After firing the swallows, the Raptors retreat, luring several [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Cylon Raiders]] further from the fight. The Cylons are deceived temporarily by the false readings.

On [[New Caprica]], [[Samuel Anders]] and the resistance team detonate dozens of bombs as a feigned attack by Colonial forces. The people evacuate per their fire-drill training, but escape to the various grounded ships of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], which prepare their engines and [[FTL]] drives to depart. Many people, however, become pinned down by [[Cylon Centurion|Centurion]] fire.

Admiral Adama performs an extremely risky move. He orders ''Galactica'' to conduct an intra-atmosphere jump, escaping the detection of the [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]]. While in freefall, it launches [[Blue Squadron (RDM)|Blue Squadron]]. Blue Squadron performs hit-and-run attacks on the Cylons on the ground, those in [[Guard towers|observation towers]], interdicts the few Raiders operating near the surface, and eliminates the main gates of the shipyard where the grounded civilian ships are kept. Before the battlestar impacts the surface, ''Galactica'' performs a second jump back into space. Stress from the vibration and heat of entry have heavily taxed the structure of the battlestar. ''Galactica''’s mission analysis had predicted that only two [[Basestar (RDM)|basestars]] would engage ''Galactica''. However, four basestars converge to attack the battlestar.

With the Vipers destroying targets on the ground and in the air in vicinity of New Caprica City, the civilians previously pinned down are able to board their ships. Simultaneously, Colonial [[Marines]] and resistance members assault the [[New Caprica Detention Center|detention center]], freeing [[Kara Thrace]] and other detainees.

The Cylons in charge on the ground realize the ground situation is lost and escape in a Heavy Raider as they task [[Number Three]] with setting off a nuclear detonation to "clean up."

Before long, ''Galactica's'' FTL drives and maneuvering thrusters are disabled, and the port side of the ship reaches its structural limits. Upon hearing that the FTL drive was disabled, Admiral Adama tells his crew, "Then that's it. It's been an honor." Battlestar ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]'' then arrives with its forward batteries blazing, scoring several hits that severely damage or destroy one basestar. Commander [[Lee Adama]] orders his battlestar towards the basestars to give ''Galactica'' time to repair its FTL drive and escape. Meanwhile, most of the civilian ships become airborne and jump away.

Commander Adama directs his ship to a position between the basestars targeting ''Galactica'', in an effort to draw fire away from her. Admiral Adama infers from the absence of Vipers from ''Pegasus'' that its Vipers are guarding the remaining ships of the Fleet at the rendezvous point and that ''Pegasus'' is on a one-way trip. While ''Pegasus'' "was taking a hell of a pounding," the crew of ''Galactica'' is able to bring its FTL back on line. Admiral Adama immediately orders his crew to land its birds and prepare to jump.

With ''Pegasus'' taking phenomenal damage, Commander Adama orders all hands to abandon ship, using standby Raptors to jump away from the battle. He ensures that the weapons were set to autofire and that the ship is on a collision course with one of the basestars before departing. The damaged, unmanned ''Pegasus'' collides into one basestar, destroying both. The remnants of ''Pegasus''’s starboard [[flight pod]] collides with another of the remaining basestars, destroying it.

''[[Colonial One]]'' is the last Colonial ship to leave the planet, with [[Laura Roslin]] back in her old chair in place of the deposed president, Gaius Baltar ([[Exodus, Part II]]). On the surface, the Cylons' planned nuclear detonation (which would be of questionable tactical value now that the Colonials have left the planet) does not occur.
