Over a year after settlement, there were major shortages of basic living materials and medical supplies. Most of the population still lived in canvas tents instead of permanent homes of some sort. It appears many among the population of [[New Caprica City]], including [[Tyrol]] and the workers' union which he now leads, blame [[Baltar]] and his policies as president for most or all of the continuing economic/social problems facing the settlers on [[New Caprica]]. 380 days after colonization, the [[Cylons]] discover New Caprica, lured by the energy signature caused by the detonation of the nuclear warhead that destroyed the [[Cloud 9]]. Obviously, these events will have some effect on the permanence of New Caprica as a homeworld for humanity.

The takeover and occupation of [[New Caprica]] by a Cylon fleet and the retreat of the [[Battlestar|Battlestars]] ''[[Galactica]]'' and ''[[Pegasus]]'', as well as the rest of [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]].

Soon after [[Racetrack]] accidently discovered a habitable planet in the middle of a nebula, [[Dr. Gaius Baltar]] and [[Tom Zarek]] made permanent settlement on this planet the central issue of Baltar's presidential campaign. Baltar's opponent, [[Laura Roslin|President Laura Roslin]], refused to sway on her opposition to settling on the planet, knowing that the harsh conditions of the planet as well as the close proxomity to Cylon forces would spell disaster for the human race.

Soon after Baltar's win in the election and inauguration, the Cylon agent [[Gina]] detinated a nuclear device within the fleet, destroying ''[[Cloud Nine]]'' as well as at least two smaller ships. Despite worries from the military that the nuclear attack could indicate a immediate Cylon strike, Baltar orders the fleet to settle on what had become known as [[New Caprica]].

One year later, conditions on New Caprica had severly deteriorated. Most people were still living in tents, medicine was in short supply, and Baltar's government had become corrupt and ineffective. Laura Roslin had taken up teaching at an elementary school in [[New Caprica City]]. [[William Adama|Admiral William Adama]] and [[Lee Adama|Commander Lee Adama]], commanding the ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' respectively, continue to orbit New Caprica along with the rest of the fleet to provide defense. However, with many crew members having settled on New Caprica, many of the ships are falling into disrepair and an effective CAP cannot be organized.

380 days after colonization, a Cylon fleet suddenly appeared within the nebula. Commander Lee Adama urges Admiral Adama to order the fleet to jump, saying that they cannot win against the Cylons. Reluctantly, Admiral Adama orders the fleet to jump, saying that they will be back. As waves of [[Raiders]] and [[Heavy Raider|Heavy Raiders]] fly over New Caprica City, [[Caprica-Six]], [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], and a [[Number Five]] copy enter President Baltar's office. They inform him that they had detected the remains of a nuclear explosion and stumbled upon New Caprica. Faced with no choice, Baltar formally surrenders to the Cylons as waves of [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] enter New Caprica City as a stunned population looks on and [[Starbuck]] vows to resist the occupation.

The descent of the bulk of the Colonial population to the planet's surface has stripped the [[Galactica]] and the [[Pegasus]] of much of their effective crew strength. A number of internal promotions and reassignments, notably of [[Anastasia Dualla]] to watch Lieutenant on the [[Pegasus]] and Lt. [[Karl Agathon]] to watch officer on the [[Galactica]], were made to fill vacant slots, but the loss of so many key crew members has left the [[Battlestars]] greatly weakened.

Approximately 2,000 years ago, twelve of the thirteen tribes of [[Kobol]] settled on nearby worlds ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). Their names and icons originally corresponded to the twelve signs of the western [[Wikipedia:Zodiac|Zodiac]], although these names drifted over time ([[Home, Part II]]).

It is unclear whether all twelve Colonies are orbiting a single star or not, or what the name of this star might be. The semi-canonical 2003 [[Video Game]] names the home system for the Twelve Colonies as [[Cyrannus]]. This has yet to be confirmed in the new television series, however.

Moore]] has suggested that the Colonies probably maintained some minor observatories and listening posts in outlying star systems, but it is unlikely that ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' will encounter them in the course of the series. Approximately 2,000 years ago, twelve of the thirteen tribes of [[Kobol]] settled on nearby worlds ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]]). Their names and icons originally corresponded to the twelve signs of the western [[Wikipedia:Zodiac|Zodiac]], although these names drifted over time ([[Home, Part II]]).

It is unclear whether all twelve Colonies are orbiting a single star or not, or what the name of this star might be. The semi-canonical 2003 [[Video Game]] names the home system for the Twelve Colonies as [[Cyrannus]]. This has yet to be confirmed in the new television series, however.

[[Ronald D. Moore]] has suggested that the Colonies probably maintained some minor observatories and listening posts in outlying star systems, but it is unlikely that ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' will encounter them in the course of the series. "15 people were killed" when President [[Richard Adar]], for reasons unexplained, sent the [[Colonial Marine Corps|Marines]] to Aerelon ([[Water]]).

The mining colony of [[Troy]], destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion ([[Flesh and Bone]]) is located near Aerelon, and may have been operated by natives of that world. [[Troy]] was the alleged home of [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Sharon Valerii]] ([[Flesh and Bone]]).

The pro [[Pyramid (RDM)|Pyramid]] team from Aerelon played against the [[Caprica Buccaneers]] in one of the last games before the Cylon attack. They apparently won ([[Resistance]]).

A photo of a grief-stricken soldier staring out at the ruins of Aerelon's capital hangs behind President Roslin's desk and on the bulkhead of the pilot ready room on Galactica.

Caprica is a large blue-green planet, similar to Earth. Its largest population center is [[Caprica City]], which serves as the seat of all three branches of the Colonial [[Government]]. Caprica City is surrounded by other small towns and hamlets, such as [[Oasis]]. Thus far, Caprica is the only planet of the Twelve Colonies that viewers have seen directly. The episode opening credits show Caprica City, as well as the nuclear bombing of Caprica itself.

Other major cities included [[Delphi]], famous for the [[Delphi Museum of the Colonies]] and also home to a large spaceport. After the [[Cylon attack]], the [[Resistance (movement)|resistance]] cell led by [[Samuel Anders]] operates near Delphi.

Caprica is known for its fine Caprican cloth (which Dr. Gaius Baltar wears), [[fumarella leaf]], and art.

Picon was the location for the [[Picon Fleet Headquarters|Colonial Fleet Headquarters]] ([[Mini-Series]]), and as such came under heavy attack during the early stages of the [[Cylon Attack|Cylon attack]]. President [[Richard Adar]] offered a complete and unconditional surrender to the Cylons after Picon was nuked; this overture was ignored ([[Mini-Series]], [[List of Deleted Scenes (RDM)|deleted scene]]).

Sagittaron endured centuries of exploitation at the hands of the other Colonies ([[Bastille Day]]), so much so that even after unified Colonial rule, [[Tom Zarek]] led an organized series of terrorist acts against the established government there. One of these acts include blowing up a government building ([[Bastille Day]]). Under Sagittarian penal law, convicted felons lose their citizenship, but have it automatically reinstated after they finish serving their sentences. This included the right to vote and to stand for election ([[Colonial Day]]).

As of "[[33]]", 5,251 natives of the planet were in [[The Fleet (RDM)|the Fleet]].
