__TOC__
For the music of Caprica, composer Bear McCreary strove to create a soundscape reminiscent of, but vastly different from that of its predecessor, calling it a "distant cousin" of Battlestar Galactica. The music includes the continued use of leitmotifes for characters, events and places - but with a decidedly more "western" feel; the distinctly ethnic instrumentation and percussion from Battlestar Galactica, while featured in Caprica, is heard in a diminished capacity.

Main Title Music
Beginning in the series' second episode, "Rebirth", a main title sequence is established utilizing a theme from the pilot episode - the Graystone Family Theme - as an overarching theme for Caprica as a whole. According to composer Bear McCreary:

:"The title begins with a pounding percussion fill that introduces the Main Theme (technically the Graystone Theme), played by Chris Bleth on flute. The track builds in intensity, incorporating electric guitars and bass, played by Steve Bartek and Mike Valerio respectively. Towards the end, a distorted drum kit enters (played by Nate Wood) that gives the track a hard-rock feel, completely unique from anything we heard in the pilot. I wanted to give our delicate, plaintive melody a bad ass metal backbone, representative of the V-Clubs and cultural underbelly of Caprica City that the series depicts."

Character & Event Themes
Bear McCreary described the music of Caprica as featuring three spokes: music representing the Graystone Family, the Tauron elements of the series, and sequences taking place in the virtual world. However there are a litany of themes and motifs branching from those three spokes.

Main Characters
Graystone Family Theme
Described as the de facto Caprica theme, the Graystone Family Theme was initially created to underscore scenes featuring the Graystones, but later evolved into the series main title. Executive producer David Eick later recalled in "The Music of Caprica" video blog that theme was a remarkable achievement as it was instantly recognizable and easily associated with Caprica.

The theme first appears in the pilot immediately following the death of Zoe Graystone during a montage in which Daniel and Amanda Graystone mourn the loss of their daughter. It appears in every episode of the series, generally played on flute or strings, underscoring scenes related to the Graystone Family and Graystone Industries, as well as Lacy Rand. It notably appears in the series finale "Apotheosis", underscoring the U-87s battling STO terrorists in Atlas Arena. For that episode, McCreary described the piece, titled "Apotheosis", as an extension of the main title, combining strings, percussion and electric guitars. The Graystone Theme is also integral in the final moments of the series, played on string and accompanied by percussion in what McCreary described as a "soaring" final statement.

In the episode, "End of Line", Daniel Graystone appears playing the Graystone Theme on the piano in his home lab.

Bear McCreary intended the Graystone Family Theme to be heard one last time in the pilot movie for Blood and Chrome, underscoring a scene between Graystone Industries scientist Becca Kelly and a young Ensign William Adama. The cue, however, was cut from the finished episode.

Graystone Family Ostinato
McCreary described the Graystone Ostinato as a "simple oscillating pattern...woven throughout the score, serving as the canvas upon which the longer melodies are painted." Usually played on the harp, piano and gamelan, the osinato was restated in the series finale in a more aggressive variation, heard in the climactic battle at Atlas Arena.

Daniel Graystone Ostinato
An ostinato representing Daniel Graystone also appears in the pilot episode and transitions to represent the character in the series proper. This repetitive figure first signifies Daniel's progressing obsession with the Zoe avatar and his "growing madness", it later underscored many of the scientist's scenes. Usually played on harp, the ostinato was also accompanied by aggressive percussive elements in the pilot as well as in "Know Thy Enemy" and "Ghosts in the Machine".

Amanda Graystone Theme
A lesser used melody, the Amanda Graystone Theme notably appears during the Graystones' love scene during the pilot. A simple, ascending scale, the theme is also prominently featured in the Amanda-centered episode, "The Imperfections of Memory" in which it was adapted for her deceased brother Darius. Utilized as both a theme and in the form of an ostinato, the Darius melody is Amanda's theme played in reverse order.

Zoe Graystone Chords
While both the Graystone Theme and Ostinato are utilized to represent Zoe Graystone, a third musical idea is more specifically attached to the character. The progression first appears when Lacy Rand discovers the Zoe avatar in the virtual world and later recurs in "Rebirth" as Lacy embraces Zoe in her robotic form.

The chords are later heard prominently during Zoe's virutal dates with Philomon in the episodes "The Imperfections of Memory" (notably during the simulated Viper flight) and "End of Line". In the episode "Things We Lock Away" this motif is heard subtly mixed with repeating gamelan notes similar to those of the Six Theme from Battlestar Galactica, referencing "Messenger Zoe"'s connection to that series' "Head Six".

Tauron Theme
While neither Joseph Adama nor his brother Sam Adama receive specific themes or motifs, the second most prominent musical identity in Caprica is the Tauron Theme. With the themes for the Graystones given a more traditional Western sound, the Tauron Theme was created as a more ethnic and chaotic counterpoint mirroring the depiction of the Tauron home planet. Bear McCreary compared the Tauron themes to the Italian music from The Godfather. This theme is used in scenes featuring the Adama Family and is frequently played by Paul Cartwright on the acoustic fiddle, or by Chris Bleth on the Chinese membrane flute.

The Tauron Theme is the only theme in Caprica to receive lyrics, heard in the episode "There is Another Sky" during the funeral for Tamara and Shannon Adama. Written by the episode's writer, Kath Lingenfelter, the lyrics for the Tauron Theme were sung in Ancient Greek:

class="infoboxheader" | Original English lyrics by Kath Lingenfelter:
These are the voices of those <br />
Who have passed over the river heard <br />
On the wind entwined with the <br />
Eternal and the everlasting <br />
These are the voices of those whom <br />
We have loved, who no more will suffer <br />
Who have returned to the mud <br />
This is the voice of the dead <br />
Entwined with the eternal and the everlasting <br />

Speaking of the Tauron Theme, Bear McCreary said:

:"My task was relatively easy because Tauron and its musical traditions are entirely fictional, so I could make Tauronese music sound like whatever I wanted. I drew my inspirations from Russian folk music, and asked Paul Cartwright to play in that style as opposed to the Scottish Fiddle feel he so frequently evokes for “Roslin and Adama” on Battlestar."

Tauron Ostinato
Another ostinato used throughout the series, the Tauron Ostinato is prominently heard in the pilot when Sam Adama murders Caprica's minister of defense, Val Chambers. It is also among the first pieces from the pilot to be realized, as recounted by the show's director, Jeff Reiner:

:"The first piece I heard was the montage where Sam kills the Minister of Defense while Amanda and Daniel make love, not to mention, Joseph breaking down in tears because of guilt and the loss of his family. The score drove the scene, while evoking the intimacy of love, the rage of a gangland killing, and the struggle with ethnic identity."

The Tauron Ostinato is later heard in a notably different form in "End of Line" in scenes in which Joseph Adama searches New Cap City for the Tamara avatar, played by electronic instruments.

Adama Family Theme
Initially composed for the Battlestar Galactica episode, "The Hand of God", the Adama Family Theme continued throughout that series as the defining musical identity for William Adama as well as Adama's relationship with his son, Lee Adama. McCreary stated that he tried to "avoid over-using the sole melody from BSG to carry over", utilizing it only in the pilot episode, the Tauron funeral scene in "There is Another Sky" and in a fragmented statement in "The Dirteaters", the Adama family is the only outright thematic link between Battlestar Galactica and Caprica.

Other Themes
Cylon Percussion
The other prominent musical link between Battlestar Galactica and Caprica is the varied use of percussive elements including shakers, claves, shime daiko and sparing use of electronic and taiko drums. While heard on a smaller scale than in Galactica, the percussion is frequently heard during scenes featuring the U-87 Cylon, such as the U-87 test scene in the pilot, various scenes featuring Zoe-R in "Rebirth" and "There is Another Sky", and Sam Adama's Cylon scene in "False Labor".

Though McCreary intended to keep the use of the percussive element so heavily used in Galactica to a minimum, as Caprica progressed, the identity increasingly asserted itself. By late series episodes like "Here Be Dragons" and "Apotheosis", the percussive and ethnic instrumentation was increased, most notably in the climactic Cylon battle at the series conclusion.

Clarice's Theme
A theme for Clarice Willow is heard beginning in "Rebirth" and is featured in all subsequent episodes to underscore the character's scenes, frequently played on flute or oboe. It later branches out to scenes featuring the STO even when Clarice is not present, such as the "secrets and mysteries" conversation between Mother and Diego and the virutal love scene Lacy Rand and Odin Sinclair share in "The Heavens Will Rise".

Tamara's Theme
While not established until her third appearance in "There is Another Sky", Tamara Adama receives a musical identity associated with her action in New Cap City, but also featuring a structure reminiscent of the Tauron Theme. Played on electric violin by Paul Cartwright and layered with distorted drum kit, electric guitars, bass and synthesizers, the identity is also heard in an English Horn solo, flutes and harp. According to McCreary: "The violin represents her Tauron heritage and connection to her father, because the acoustic violin always plays the Tauron Theme. However, running it through Paul’s amp and distortion effects represents the change Tamara has undergone and her new surroundings in New Cap City." The theme appears in all episodes featuring Tamara in New Cap City, notably in "End of Line" and "Things We Lock Away", before being diminished by a secondary virtual world theme in "The Dirteaters" and "The Heavens Will Rise".

Vergis' Theme
Another Tauron sub-theme is that attached to the character Tomas Vergis which is first used in that character's debut, "Know Thy Enemy". Described by Bear McCreary as "simple and repetitive, evocative of a folk song" and played on Chinese membrane flute, the theme was intended to subtly reference Vergis' Tauron heritage while giving the antagonistic character an ominous musical identity, closely related in tone to Battlestar Galactica The theme would recur throughout the series, most notably during the character's final appearance in "Things We Lock Away".

Songs
Caprican National Anthem
For the second episode of the series Bear McCreary created a recording of the Caprcian National Anthem, Caprica Abides. Though only a small portion of that recording was used during the scenes at Atlas Arena, the entire song was later utilized at the arena in "Apotheosis". The anthem was sung by Mack Donnelly - “Mr. O Canada” - who frequently sang the Canadian National Anthem before Vancouver Canucks games.

class="infoboxheader" | Original lyrics by Jane Espenson:
Caprica let us celebrate <br />
Raise our hands despite the weight <br />
And all her joys we extol <br />
Caprica Abides <br />

Caprica let us perservere <br />
Blind ourselves to doubt and fear <br />
And to the burdens of the soul <br />
Caprica Abides <br />

Caprica the humble beast <br />
Nutures more than she <br />
Who gave the twins their noble feast <br />
And saved them from the sea. <br />

Caprica let us tolerate <br />
Differences may separate, <br />
Yet form the bonds that make us all. <br />

So say we all, <br />
So say we all, <br />
Caprica abides!

Tauron Gangster Rap
For a scene at the Ha'la'tha hangout in "The Reins of a Waterfall" the producers initially intended use an "old-timey blues music, appropriate for the fedoras and suits on screen". Bear McCreary however felt the scene warranted a much more modern take, instead creating a song "electronic and contemporary, but also be uniquely Tauron" called "Voices of the Dead". Performed by McCreary's brother Brendan McCreary, "Voices of the Dead" features lyrics sung in Ancient Greek and acoustic fiddle solos by Paul Cartwright.

Blind ourselves from doubt and fear <br />

Overview
:Returning with the help of Demetrius, the rebel Cylon faction requests an alliance with the Colonials in order to plan a joint-attack mission against the Cylons’ vital Resurrection Hub. Meanwhile on Colonial One, Lee Adama and the Quorum express their mistrust of President Roslin and her secrecy regarding the new Cylon alliance. Aboard Galactica, Colonel Tigh struggles with the prospect of un-boxing the Threes in order to reveal the identities of the Final Five, and Gaeta copes with the amputation of his leg.

Summary
Teaser
* President Laura Roslin and Quorum delegate Lee Adama listen to a taped broadcast from cult leader Gaius Baltar, claiming Roslin is sharing of her hallucinogenic visions with Sharon Agathon (currently on the secret and overdue Demetrius mission) and a captured Cylon in a brig on Galactica. Adama brought the recording at the behest of the Quorum, who demand an explanation, as the Fleet has heard the broadcast as well.
*When Adama presses Roslin for an answer, she asks him first how he thinks the Fleet would react to such information. Undaunted, he asks again. Roslin confirms Baltar's statement.
*On the baseship Kara Thrace and the Demetrius crew lead a rebel group of Cylons back to the Fleet rendezvous as Sharon Agathon make last minute jump preparations.
*Thrace warns Natalie and Leoben Conoy that the Cylons of their ship are on a path of no-return when they reach the Fleet, and that there aren't any guarantees when they approach the Fleet. She assumes Natalie will be the spokesperson in trying to avoid any hostilities.
*Karl Agathon looks at the unconscious and injured Felix Gaeta before his preps the final calculations for the jump.
*When Natalie brings up Hera Agathon in conversation as being beautiful, Agathon is shocked to find out that Natalie and other Cylons know the child's name.
*Demetrius misses the Fleet in its jump and must take a few moments before it can jump again, but the baseship does reach the Fleet, leaping right into its heart, where some of the Colonial ships have to scramble out of harm's way. Predictably, Admiral Adama and Colonel Tigh bring Galactica up to action stations, scrambling the alert Vipers.
* Agathon tries to contact Galactica but the jump damaged their wireless, leaving them without communication, and possibly vulnerable to attack.
* Saul Tigh carefully watches DRADIS as eight Vipers approach the baseship. Tigh orders a weapons hold, stunning Admiral Adama but stopping any attack. Seconds later, Demetrius appears and verifies with Galactica that the baseship is disarmed and under Colonial command.

Act 1
* Several Raptors filled with Marines launch from Galactica and enter the baseship. Colonel Tigh is part of the team. Thrace tells him, "They're with me." "Which one of them shot Gaeta?" he asks.
*Gaeta is rushed to sickbay in grave condition as Dr. Cottle yells out orders to his staff to bring a cut-down tray, suggesting an immediate amputation of Gaeta's leg.
*In the wardroom, Natalie explains that the Number Two, Number Eight and Number Six models believe that seeking out the Final Five is important, while the Number One, Number Four and Number Five models violently disagreed.
* When Adama asks Natalie of the seventh model, she explains that the Number Threes were boxed, and explains the process and why the D'Annas were boxed: they saw the then-forbidden faces of the Five. She tells that unboxing the Threes could give them information that could lead them all to Earth, since the Final Five are believed to have come from there. Kara Thrace, in uniform and standing with Sharon Agathon, confirms Natalie's comment.
* Natalie notes that the baseship can heal itself of its damage, but most of their Raiders were destroyed in the ambush by the dissenting models.
* Roslin pointedly asks why the Fleet should trust these Cylons. Natalie tells that the boxing facility resides within the Resurrection Hub, a facility that controls all Resurrection Ships in existence. Natalie gives Roslin a reason to trust her and her renegade Cylons: Vengeance. The Cylon tells her that destroying the elusive Hub will destroy all Cylons ability to download, making them all effectively mortal. When asked why they would do such a thing, Natalie simply says that she and her comrades are rebels and cannot go back in any case.
*Adama presses for the coordinates of the Hub, but Natalie says she will only take them to the Hub, not give the coordinates. As Adama orders the marines to escort her away, Natalie changes her mind, promising to give the coordinates if Adama gives his word that D'Anna will be unboxed and the Cylons will be allowed to leave with the Five once the Threes identify them. Adama grudgingly gives his word.
*Leaving the meeting, Adama asks Tigh how he knew to order a weapons hold at the moment of their attack on Natalie's baseship. Tigh hesitates but says he didn't know why. "What can I say, we got lucky." Adama orders a Raptor to the coordinates of the Hub to investigate.
*Racetrack and Skulls arrive in an asteroid-filled area, and find the massive Hub, which appears to be twice the relative size of a guarding baseship. "It's beautiful," Skulls comments. They take pictures and return quickly to the Fleet.
*In sickbay, a gory scene begins as Cottle preps to remove Gaeta's leg. Gaeta wakes and strongly urges to be numbed and not anesthetized, not wanting to wake up to find his leg gone. Cottle accepts. Moments later, a saw's blade is heard tearing through Gaeta's leg as his face registers shock. Samuel Anders, who shot Gaeta to stop him from jumping Demetrius hours before, looks on with regret from a distance.

Act 2
*The civilian Fleet returns to join Galactica. Adama, Tigh, Roslin and Karl Agathon discuss an attack strategy. With no Raiders and too few resources for Galactica to fight alone, Agathon suggests to use the baseship as a "trojan horse", entering the Hub's vicinity with half of Galactica's Vipers to blow the FTL drive on the Hub. Roslin ponders the idea that the Cylons will become mortal enemies.
*Tigh suggests destroying the Hub outright without resurrecting the Threes, reneging on Adama's word. Adama believes the Five could lead the Fleet to Earth but Roslin thinks the Five will be uncooperative after the Hub's destruction. Adama believes that the Five are like the rebel Cylons, but Roslin disagrees. Tigh is visibly agitated about the discussion, and again suggests destruction, putting trust in Roslin's way to Earth.
*Roslin suggests a compromise plan: Unbox the D'Annas, destroy the Hub, but hold on to the Five until they all get to Earth, then turn them over to the rebels, believing the rebels will be compelled to wait a bit longer.
*Deckhands and pilots prepare their fighters inside the baseship hangar with Cylons and humans working together.
*Tom Zarek reads a statement to the Quorum: "In 36 hours the Colonies will unite forces with insurgent rebel Cylons and their leaders in an unprecedented joint military operation". Zarek asks Lee Adama why the Quorum weren't consulted, but Adama doesn't know, no longer being in the military chain of command.
*Tigh, Tory Foster, Samuel Anders and Galen Tyrol talk about the unboxing of the Threes. Tyrol considers that they at least discover the last member of the Five, but Tigh darkly explains that such an action will only "crowd the airlock a little more." Tigh doesn't at all believe that the Colonials will see the Five in a good light.
*Anders does not respond to the others. He is distraught over the loss of Gaeta's leg, talking of how Gaeta sings all the time to cope with his pain.
*Foster meets with Roslin in an office refurbished for her to conduct presidential business while on Galactica while recovering from another Doloxan treatment and keeping close to sickbay. Roslin first pleasantly comments about Foster's positive change in mood any time she is aboard Galactica. Roslin asks Foster to find out who was sharing the rumors of the president's shared visions to Baltar, then sticks the dagger in, telling Foster she is very aware that she is sleeping with Gaius Baltar.
*Before Foster can say a word, Roslin tells her that there are enough reports of her visitations to "make her a charter member of his nymph squad." Foster confesses to believing in Baltar's spiritual message, but Roslin is feeling quite betrayed and turns her back on her to do other work, ordering her away.
*On the baseship, Natalie believes that the Colonials won't give the Five to them as promised. She suggests a backup plan of her own: Take hostages after the attack to ensure they get what they want.
*In sickbay, Gaeta continues to sing a sad love ballad as Lee Adama visits Roslin there. He tells her that the Quorum is considering a vote of no-confidence against her. Roslin refuses to cater to the representative's desire to feel involved. Adama describes that the representatives' faces appeared empty, resigned to just consider the no-confidence vote just to cope with the uncertainty. He suggests that Roslin compromise and tell them what she can about the attack to allay the Quorum's fears.

Act 3
* In bed but not engaged in sex, Baltar complains. Foster admits being tired of lying to Roslin, of how the rumors have affected the president and Foster's relationship with her, about the rumors of Roslin's collusion with the Cylons.
* Baltar explains the source of the rumors: Caprica Six, who told Baltar (through his attorney) of the news during his trial. Baltar believes that Roslin is keeping everyone in the dark, believing that Roslin's concealing of information is worse than revealing it.
*Roslin meets with the Quorum with Admiral Adama. Roslin brings in Natalie to help emphasize how she trusts the mission's success. Natalie speaks: She tells of her own civil war and how things had began to change. Without a Resurrection Ship, time became a commodity, a realization that mortality is crucial to making humans whole. As the Cylon continues to speak, Thrace has flashbacks of what the Hybrid told her of her destiny and the belief that she is the "harbinger of death".
*As Gaeta keeps singing in sickbay, Baltar observes quietly in the background.
*Roslin experiences another vision of the Opera House, searching for Hera Agathon. Caprica Six and Sharon Agathon also share the same vision. When Agathon wakes up, little Hera is there at her bedside and says a darkly prophetic "Bye-bye," suggesting the child knows she will be taken in some way.

Act 4
*A wide shot of the Fleet shows the baseship has nearly healed itself of its damage. On Galactica, Kara Thrace sees Roslin in sickbay, who compliments Thrace on her plan to unite the rebels and the Fleet.
*When Thrace asks if Roslin is having visions, the president is quiet. Thrace repeats what the rebel baseship's Hybrid told her some time before: "This shall it come to pass: the dying leader shall know the truth of the Opera House."
*Shocked at Thrace's knowledge of the dream's specific content, Roslin asks how the Hybrid would know about her dreams, but Thrace does not know. Roslin pleads with Thrace to help her determine the meaning of the dreams. Thrace accepts without hesitation and Roslin asks her to find Karl Agathon.
*Aboard the baseship, the Cylons are becoming agitated, unsure about the attack. Natalie tells of the feelings she had from the Quorum, their distrust. Natalie believes that the united Five may judge the Cylons for their duplicity with the Colonials, fearing that the Five will refuse to come with them.
*When Natalie suggests to completely abandon the project, to tell the Cylon Centurions to stand down, an Eight in attendance warns that the Colonials will never trust them again. Leoben warns her that the action may be at a point of no return. He tells Natalie to meet with Adama and stall for time while he deals with the Centurions.
*Roslin meets privately with Baltar, confirming the visions. When he asks why he was told now, she replies that he is part of the vision itself.
*In Sharon Agathon's quarters, Hera is drawing. Sharon picks up the drawings to see that Hera has drawn numerous number 6s and blond women on pages and pages. One drawing depicts a basestar. The final drawing is of Hera smiling and standing by one of the blond women. Distressed, Agathon turns to find Hera gone from her quarters and goes out to chase her.
*On the baseship, Roslin, Karl Agathon, Baltar, a Leoben and an Eight head under guard into the baseship and the Hybrid, as Cylon Centurions walk by an uneasy group of pilots.
*Natalie arrives on a Raptor on Galactica, obviously uneasy.
*Sharon Agathon chases Hera through the battlestar, but the child is elusive. When she stops to tell Tyrol, working within a corridor, he gives her a unsympathetic stare, but eventually follows her.
*Hera finds herself at a stop in front of Natalie, being escorted by Tigh and a squad of Marines. But Agathon is there immediately and draws her sidearm, warning Natalie away. Tigh keeps the Marines at bay, standing them down.
*At the deactivated Hybrid's pool, Roslin orders the Hybrid reactivated. When Baltar says, "Let God's will be done," Roslin tells him to "Shut up. It's time to get some answers."
*Agathon asks Tyrol to take Hera away, which he does. However, Agathon's visions of the Opera House and a Six's kidnapping of Hera are too strong in her mind. "You are never going to take my child," she says as she shoots Natalie.
*At the moment that the Hybrid awakes, she cries out "Jump!" The baseship disappears from the Fleet with the president and her entourage all aboard.
*Gaeta continues to sing in his bed.

Notes
*The episode title is probably a reference to the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which dealt with race relations between Caucasian and African Americans in America.
*The survivor count at the beginning credits (39,673) accounts for the deaths of Emily Kowalski and Jean Barolay in the previous episode, "Faith".
*Felix Gaeta's loss of his leg is reminiscent of a similar event in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In an episode of that show's seventh and final season, Nog loses his leg and, in a later episode, mentally recovers from it by surrounding himself with a holodeck program of Vic Fontaine, a Frank Sinatra-type casino singer.
*Although it is a common Hollywood convention, a gunshot does not cause a person to fly backwards a large distance as shown with Natalie. The effect is achieved by pulling back the actors with a cable.
*The song Gaeta sings throughout the episode is called "Gaeta's Lament". The lyrics and the music were written by the episode's writer Michael Angeli based on a song his wife, Karen Angeli, composed. Series's composer Bear McCreary was responsible for the song's arrangement and for integrating the music throughout the episode. Actor Alessandro Juliani, who studied opera and performed the song live on set, also greatly influenced it. McCreary discusses the song in his blog.
*The book Roslin carries when she meets with Baltar in the Raptor is Searider Falcon, the same book Adama reads to her in "Escape Velocity".
*Just after the opening title, a Windows XP message box can be seen on one of the displays on the Cylon Basestar.

Analysis
* Samuel Anders is distraught over his actions on the Demetrius, notably those concerning Gaeta and having shot him in the leg that is later amputated. However, there is no indication yet that Anders will suffer any disciplinary procedures for the shooting, nor are any indicated for the alleged mutiny on the Demetrius. A cover-up by the Demetrius crew with the Cylons' cooperation could be a possibility. A possible cover story for Anders shooting Gaeta is blaming it on the Six that killed Jean Barolay. Both the crew of the Demetrius and the Cylons have a vested interest in keeping the affair secret: the Demetrius crew wants to avoid various legal sanctions and the Cylons want smooth unhindered negotiations to cement an alliance with the Colonials. Felix Gaeta's silence would be critical here, but there are no specific reasons for him not to tell the truth, outside of loyalty and/or fear of possible mutiny charges.
*There is no overt on-screen reaction to the death of Cally Tyrol by the Demetrius crew nor any reaction to Galen Tyrol's demotion. However, they have certainly been told off-screen about both.
* Gaius Baltar is also drawn to see Gaeta, but the two do not interact; he is out of Gaeta's view and listening to him singing, suggesting that Baltar may have forgiven Gaeta for perjuring himself at Baltar's trial and for the earlier murder attempt.
* Natalie's philosophy concerning the Cylons' need for mortality in order to value life parallels Zoe-A's statements to Clarice Willow when destroying the latter's apotheosis heaven decades earlier in "Apotheosis".
* The Hybrid's prophecy that Kara Thrace is the "harbinger of death" takes on a new significance during Natalie's speech to the Quorum. Thrace herself begins to realize it may have a positive connotation, referring to the potential loss of immortality among the Cylons.
* During the Fleet's emergency jump sequence after the basestar suddenly appears, it can be seen that Galactica's bow gun batteries are still intact, though they have not been seen clearly in operation for some time. The scorching of the lower hull caused by the jump into New Caprica's atmosphere is also very clear.
Unanswered Questions
* Why does Sharon Agathon handle the communications from the basestar to the Fleet in the beginning? Another Eight could pretend to be her.
* Might the dying leader be the now-mortal Natalie?
* Will Sharon Agathon's shooting of Natalie further strain her relationship with the Cylons?
* Do William Adama or Saul Tigh know of the complete story surrounding the mutiny on the Demetrius?
* Why does Roslin ask Thrace to find Karl Agathon, specifically?
* Why does the Hub make random jumps for its own protection? Is it fear of the human fleet, or are the Cylons aware of a greater threat out there?
Noteworthy Dialogue
*Natalie negotiating with the Colonials:
:Natalie: Madam President, you asked for a reason to help us? Vengeance. You destroy the hub, the Cylons lose their ability to download. All of us.
:Laura Roslin: Why would you be willing to lose your ability to resurrect?
:Natalie: We're rebels. We can't go back.

*Lee Adama talks to Laura Roslin about the Quorum of Twelve:
:Lee Adama: I was with them. On the emergency jump. And I saw something in the faces of the delegates. Wasn't the anxiety of the waiting. It went beyond that. I was anxious; it was my first time. But they, they...they were empty. The Quorum had given up. And then it struck me, that after going through the same routine so many times, it was the only way that they could cope with the uncertainty; to presume the worst.
:Laura Roslin: You felt their suffering. Now try holding their lives in balance every day.
:Lee Adama: Talk to them. You don't have to tell them everything. I know how it works. Just talk to the Quorum. Let them put a face to this joint mission. Let them hear from the Cylon leader. Anything. Anything to put their fears to rest.

*Natalie speaks to the Quorum:
:"In our civil war, we've seen death. We watched our people die. Gone forever. As terrible as it was, beyond the reach of the Resurrection Ships, something began to change. We could feel a sense of time. As if each moment held its own significance. We began to realize that for our existence to hold any value it must end. To live meaningful lives we must die, and not return. The one human flaw, that you spend your lifetimes distressing over - mortality - is the one thing...well, it's the one thing that makes you whole."

* Laura Roslin to Tory Foster about getting information from Baltar:
:"I don't really care if you have to spend the night on your knees praying, or just on your knees. I want a name."

*Just after the opening title a Windows XP message box can be seen on one of the displays on the Cylon Basestar.

* Why does the Hub make random jumps for its own protection? Is it fear of the human fleet, or are the Cylons aware of a greater threat out there?

The Circle is the name given to a tribunal secretly authorized by President Tom Zarek. The task of this tribunal is to decide the fate of people implicated as collaborators during the Cylon occupation of New Caprica.

The Circle's initial members include Saul Tigh, Galen Tyrol, Samuel Anders, Diana Seelix, Jean Barolay, and Charlie Connor. After the trials and executions of thirteen suspected collaborators, Anders decides that he is no longer able to handle the emotional burden of deciding the life or death decisions made by the group. He is replaced by his wife, Kara Thrace.

While certainly not the normal manner for the trial (and punishment) of suspected traitors, the Circle does have a legal basis. When Anders drops out, the group needs to find a sixth member. As Colonel Tigh mentions, they "are not a death squad. [They] need six members to be legal, as the President ordered." (Some viewers might think that he refers to Laura Roslin, but she has not re-assumed the presidency yet, and with Baltar with the Cylons, this means Tom Zarek has succeeded to the office.)

Although Connor is out for revenge for his dead son and cares little for proper procedures, Tigh and Tyrol emphasize that they need proof and eye witness accounts to convict people. Nonetheless, Roslin and Adama are appalled that Zarek would authorize trials without granting the accused the legal representation they are entitled too. Zarek tries to justify this, by saying that the Fleet would be occupied for months or years with proper trials and wants to spare Roslin signing death warrants for the entirety of her next term.

The suspect list includes Galactica military personnel James "Jammer" Lyman and Felix Gaeta. The Circle convicts Lyman for perpetrating crimes against humanity and treason and executes him by expulsion through one of Galactica's launch tubes. Gaeta, who had served as a presidential aide to Gaius Baltar on New Caprica is also convicted by the Circle of crimes against humanity. Just before Gaeta is to be executed, Tyrol is able to confirm that it was Gaeta who served as the "inside source" during the occupation of New Caprica, passing top-secret information to the resistance. Tyrol convinces the other members of the Circle to stay the execution and Gaeta is released.

Fifty-six other suspected collaborators on the list are not tried. The Circle disbands when newly reinstated President Laura Roslin grants general pardons for all collaborators (Collaborators).

Notes
*It is an interesting irony that at least three of the founding members are members of the final five Cylons, though they were not aware of it.

*Eleven other unknown people were tried and executed by the Circle.
Overview
:A figure from Adama's past returns to haunt him. His return raises questions about why the Cylons launched their initial attack against the Twelve Colonies.

Summary
On Galactica
* Galactica detects three Raiders. Much to the surpise of the CIC crew, two Raiders are pursuing a third Raider, damaged by Cylon gunfire. Starbuck and Kat are dispatched. After destroying the pursuing Raiders, they go after the third.
* In CIC, Admiral Adama orders Kat and Starbuck to escort the Raider to Galactica, after hearing, from the Raider, a familiar human voice and callsign: Bulldog.
* In the hangar bay, the party are surprised that a human has exited the Raider. A visibly weak Daniel Novacek salutes Adama; Adama returns the gesture.
* Over a meal of noodles Adama asks Novachek how he escaped. He relates a story of plague on the basestar and escaping after killing a Number Three with a blow to the nose delivered through the cell bars. He mentions that the Cylons complained of an infectious illness at the time, believing this offered him the chance to escape.
* Bulldog is debriefed by the President with Adama present, where they tell a (decidedly shaky) story of a Tauron mining facility too close to the Armistice Line. Skeptical, Roslin immediately questions Adama's story following the debriefing. He replies that it is "his mess" and that he resolve it. Once she leaves, Adama kicks over a table in frustration.
* Novachek sees Saul Tigh in his quarters shortly after Adama talks to him. Tigh informs Novacek that Adama (aboard battlestar Valkyrie) ordered Novachek shot down to get rid of evidence of their incursion into Cylon space.
*Meanwhile, Adama makes a similar confession to his son, Lee, stating his belief that he provoked the Cylon attacks on the Colonies. By presenting humanity as warmongers, he may have left the Cylons with no choice but to strike first. Aghast at first, Lee Adama tries to console his father, blaming the Fleet Admiralty, saying that he was "only one man." Adama replies, "It only takes one."
* Kara Thrace reviews their Viper's gun film from the fight with the Cylon Raiders and realizes that the Cylons were deliberately missing their target, allowing Bulldog escape. She goes to Saul Tigh with this information, who deduces that Bulldog was sent there by the Cylons to kill the admiral.
* Tigh finds Novacek attempting to murder Adama (mixed with flashbacks of Bulldog let out of his cell) and stops him.
* Adama later presents his resignation to Roslin. Bemused, she accuses him of naivete, and points out that the Admiralty may have been trying to provoke a war with the Commander as scapegoat. Nor can he say with confidence that any one act triggered the Cylon holocaust. She then tells him that his 'penance' will be to accept a Medal of Distinction for his long years of service, a gesture badly needed for the Fleet's morale.
* After sending Novacek off to a berthing on another ship with a uniform, Tigh (now wearing an eyepatch instead of medical gauze) and Adama sit down for a drink in the admiral's quarters to discuss Ellen Tigh's death on New Caprica.

On a basestar
*In a dream, Three is trying to avoid marines on Galactica. The marines corner her against a hatch labelled "End of Line." The marines raise their weapons and Three tells them to shoot.
*As the shots go off, Three wakes up in bed with Baltar and Caprica-Six. She has apparently been having a sexual relationship with Baltar and possibly Six as well.
*In the Cylon control room, Caprica-Six questions Three about her bad dreams. Caprica Six asks if the dreams are about Baltar. Three indicates otherwise, but does not elaborate.
*Three gives a Cylon Centurion orders to shoot her, and then delete any information regarding the incident. The Centurion obeys and shoots her in the head. In the moments before she is downloaded, she experiences memories from New Caprica and a startling vision of five white-robed beings whose identity is obscured.
*Three awakes in a Cylon rebirthing tank where a Three, Five, Six, and Eight help her recover. The downloaded Three tells her counterpart, "There's something beautiful, miraculous between life and death."

Notes
*Laura Roslin reviews a dossier prepared for her by Billy on her first day aboard Galactica. It includes large photos of battlestar Galactica, a photograph of the CIC crew of Valkyrie, a (mostly illegible) certificate bearing Saul Tigh's name, and a cursory biography of William Adama. This biographical information has been intergrated into William Adama article. Also, an analysis of Colonial dates used in the dossier can be found in the Timeline (RDM) article.
*Admiral William Adama names Major Lee Adama to succeed him as commander of Galactica in his resignation letter.
*In Adama's flashback, the admirals are wearing their decorations on their day uniforms. This contrasts with most Colonial Fleet officers shown thus far, who only wear their decorations on their dress uniform sash.
*Admiral Corman's office is decorated with weapons and war memorabilia. Admiral Cain's quarters were similarly decorated. Both individuals seemed ready, almost eager, for a conflict.
*Both Gaius Baltar and Sharon Agathon appear in this episode, but neither has any lines.
*In Number Three's dream, the door at which she is shot by the marines is labeled "End of Line". As well as being a metaphor for death, this is a statement repeated often by the Cylon Hybrid. "End of Line" is a also a reference to the movie Tron and could also be a computer/programming reference.
*This episode shares some plot elements with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "The Defector," written by Moore. Notably, it begins with a dramatic chase delivering a dubious ally into friendly hands that is later shown to be staged. Additionally, both episodes feature plots revolving around a contested border.
* For the episode, Bear McCreary created a musical theme for Novacek, called "Novacek's Theme", which was "very much inspired by Hitchcock's collaborations with composer Bernard Herrmann".
*In her vision of the Opera house, Three briefly glimpses five white figures. In his Podcast for this episode, Moore implies that these correspond to the final five Cylon models.
* Adama jokingly chides Novacek for his "bullshit attitude". The line was censored in the broadcast of the episode on the Sci Fi Channel in America, however in the release of the video on iTunes, in the Canadian broadcast on the SPACE channel and in the UK and Ireland broadcast on Sky One, the line was uncensored.

Analysis
*Valkyrie appears to be an intermediate step between the Galactica and Mercury battlestar designs. In addition, it seems to be slightly smaller than either; this may mean that it is a "light" or "fast" battlestar type designed to support larger vessels.
*Adama and Roslin know each other well enough by now to tell when the other is lying, or is not fooled by a lie, even when others around can't. Roslin has always been the better of the two in this ability, as early as revealing Adama's initial ruse about the location of Earth (Miniseries).
*At the end of the episode, Saul Tigh is trying to deal with his guilt over his wife, but he does not seem to want his job as XO back, at least not any time soon.
*Adama's feelings of guilt over his actions during Valkyrie's mission shed new light on the motivation for his speech at Galactica's decomissioning ceremony at the begining of the series. Also, they explain his near-monomania with safeguarding and/or rescuing those under his command or protection.
*The Cylons are able to detect and destroy the Stealthstar that had only entered two kilometers into their space. This seems suspicious given the fact that they were unable to detect the Blackbird, presumably a far less sophisticated design. Either the Cylons had more advanced detection equipment on the Armistice Line, or they had advance knowledge of Bulldog's mission.
**It is only speculation that the Blackbird's stealth capabilities were less effective than those of the Stealthstar. The reason that the Blackbird went undetected by the Cylons is that its hull, at Helo's suggestion, was made of carbon composite. There is no way of knowing whether or not this was true of the Stealthstar.
**In addition, the Cylons near the Armistice Line would have known to look for stealth ships, as they probably suspected that the Colonial fleet would try to gain intelligence on the Cylon military status. After the destruction of the Colonies, it is unlikely that the Cylons believed that the Colonials were still in possession of any kind of stealth fighter and would not attempt to detect one.
**Bulldog was communicating to Valkyrie before being attacked. The Cylons may have been able to detect this radiation and fire at the source of it.
*Bulldog's story is even less believable given the fact that it took Kara Thrace several hours to gut a Raider and learn how to fly it. The Raider Kara captured was damaged, but it would still have taken Bulldog some time to adapt the raider for his own use.
**As the episode implies that Bulldog was deliberately released by the Cylons in an effort to direct his anger towards Adama, it is possible that the Cylons allowed Bulldog to gain a working knowledge of the raider.
*Bulldog probably could have stolen a Heavy Raider, which unlike the light versions seems to have a crew compartment and perhaps piloting controls, but then the production crew couldn't have re-used the captured-Raider prop from "You Can't Go Home Again" on the flight deck set.
*Kara Thrace going to Tigh with her findings is an acknowledgment of their shared semi-pariah status and the connection that was shown in "Collaborators" for the first time.
*The last two scenes of "Hero" appear to have been edited to ensure that the final scene was with Adama and Tigh. Right after the celebration scene, Adama is seen giving Bulldog a new uniform, but Adama is wearing his everyday uniform. In the final scene with Tigh, Adama is wearing his dress grays from the celebration. It appears at the very least, the two scenes were in reverse order, meaning the episode originally ended with Adama giving Bulldog his new uniform.
*During her experience between death and rebirth, Three finds herself reliving a series of memories from her various lives, including a shot of her in a theater on Caprica in "Final Cut", her final moments during "Downloaded", and her discovery of Hera on New Caprica in "Exodus, Part II". She also has a vision of another kind: the opera house seen by Baltar during the final moments of "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II".
**This sequence, as well as this episode as a whole, showcases a number of fundamental BSG leitmotivs that have had little to no exposure in their original form since the end of season one/beginning of season two. The music as well as the imagery, reminds us that we've seen the opera house before, and the associated musical themes will likely help elucidate the symbolism behind the two visions.
*Three's flashbacks after being shot by the centurion indicate that she is the same individual who was killed on Caprica by Caprica-Six in "Downloaded" and who found Hera in "Exodus, Part II". It is of course possible that some of these recollections are the result of memory-sharing rather than direct experience.
**If she is the same Three that died on Caprica, that leaves the question how it can be that she didn't get the opera house experience on her first death, even though she was stuck in limbo for thirty-six hours because of the massive casualties at the cafe in "Downloaded". It is plausible that this Three wanted to die because she'd never experienced death before.
**It is also plausible that God is only just now trying to tell her something. The opera house may act as a cue, a signal sent from God that facilitates reflection on one's own destiny at a pivotal point in their existence, when it is no longer acceptable to ignore their role in God's plan out of arrogance or inconvenience (Baltar, "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II" ), or because it seems a contradiction of the identity they'd formed by refusing to question their fate (Three, from the final days of the occupation through "Hero"). In both cases, the opera house is revealed to a soul straddling the line between life and death, both in a physical and spiritual sense, and it is perhaps this balance that can uniquely invoke the presence of God, and guide the chosen instruments towards their intended destiny.
**It is interesting to note the central role Hera plays in both of the visions that bring us to the opera house.
*There is at least one other doctor of some kind in the fleet, because Cottle instructs Bulldog to report to him.
**This doctor is probably a psychotherapist that specializes in some sort of mental trauma issues. Considering that Bulldog was in captivity for such a long time, and his breakdown while attacking Adama, at the very least, Bulldog will need a counselor to help him work through all of the emotional and mental scars that he's endured. Cottle had already confirmed that Bulldog was generally well cared for, physically, by the Cylons.
*Based on the Raider's apparently staged attack, the Cylons appear to know the current location of the Fleet.

Questions
*Did Bulldog know of or see other human prisoners during his three years of captivity?
*What class of battlestar does Valkyrie belong to?
*Why would a "Stealth Ship" in enemy territory break radio silence and use active DRADIS?
*How was the Valkyrie able to track, target and engage a stealth ship?
*Was Valkyries mission the only one the admiralty undertook or were there others?
*Was Laura Roslin right in speculating that the admiralty might have sent Valkyrie in order to provoke a war?
*What was the "unknown" craft that jumped near Stealthstar, disabled it, and then jumped away? Whose was it? Where did it come from?
*Who are the five white-robed figures Three sees in her vision before downloading? (Answer)
*Does Bulldog have information regarding the five remaining humanoid Cylon models of which nothing is known?
*How did Baltar's status change from torturee in "A Measure of Salvation" to an apparent sexual relationship with Caprica Six and Number Three?
* Was Adama's whole command staff transferred from the Valkyrie to Galactica after the failure of the recon mission?
*Why does Number Three go through all the trouble to program the Centurion to erase its memory once it shot her? Is she afraid of being boxed by the other Cylons for reasons of insanity, or because it would do some sort of damage on the Centurion once its processed the kill? (Answer)
*How does Bulldog find the Fleet?

Official Statements
*A video blog gives an insight to this episode during filming.
*Bear McCreary discusses writing "Noavcek's Theme" on his web blog:
*: In general, I only write thematic material for characters who matter in the grand scheme of the series, in hopes that the character will return at a later point in the story. In rare cases I make an exception in order to give a guest star a particularly resonant musical voice. For example, Bill Duke's Phelan from season two's Black Market required his own theme, since all the events of the episode led up to his eventual stand-off with Lee.
*:
*:Hero was obviously another such case. Novacek's mysterious past drives nearly every scene in the entire show, and it was clear he required his own theme as well.

Noteworthy Dialogue
*Speaking to another Number Three after downloading:
:Number Three: There's something beautiful, miraculous between life and death.

*Bulldog calls on Saul Tigh at Saul's quarters:
:Tigh: So ... drink?
:Bulldog: You have no idea!
:Tigh (scowling, unseen): Yes, I do.

*Bulldog explains to Adama how he got off the Cylon baseship:
:Bulldog: Well sir, it's like this. The enemy had me locked in a cell for three years. The accommodations were lousy, the service was slow. And, after a while, I felt the institution had nothing left to offer me, so I left.

*Colonel Tigh speaks to Bulldog in Adama's quarters:
:Tigh: Tell you a dirty little secret: The toughest part of getting played is losing your dignity. Feeling like you are not worth the oxygen you are sucking down. You get used to it. You start to believe it. You start to love it. It's like a bottle that never runs dry. You can keep reaching for it over and over and over again.

*Colonel Tigh calls on the Admiral at the end of the episode:
:Tigh: I hear you got a medal.
:Adama: Yeah. They're handing them out for anything these days- 'good behaviour', 'attendance'. 'Plays well with others.'
