*[[Sharon Agathon|Athena]] flies a [[Raptor]] through a blinding, immensely bright gas cloud. The Raptor's outer skin is charring from the intense heat. Athena is managing to fight off the intense radiation buildup surrounding her, thanks to her [[Cylon agent|Cylon physiology]], but a radiation monitor badge she wears is changing color from white, spotting to an ominous black.
*Elsewhere in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], President [[Laura Roslin]] summarizes the contamination of the basic foodstuff material storage used to feed everyone, from soldier to civilian. The situation is dire; 7 to 10 days of rations remain. The Fleet is starving.
*A group of pilots, including [[Lee Adama]], [[Kara Thrace]], [[Hot Dog]] and [[Louanne Katraine]], are combining what little food they have and sharing it, down to the last crumb.
*Admiral [[William Adama]] and his command staff await Athena's return from her reconnaisance mission to what they believe is a planet that has basic algae, which isn't extremely palatable but is protein-rich and will allow them to restock their food stores and survive. Athena is three hours late from return.
*Athena does make it back to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''. While her radiation badge is black, her Cylon physiology protects her (although she is obviously uncomfortable). She reports success; the planet is teeming with algae.
*But the travel through the star cluster is extremely dangerous. Two [[FTL|jumps]] are required to reach the planet on the other side of the cluster, which cannot be circumnavigated. The navigation computers of any civilian ships inside the cluster would be inoperative due to insufficient shielding and the intense radiation leaves a ship only minutes to gather their bearings for the second jump out before they absorb a fatal dose of radiation. Any ship would also have to endure the intense heat as well.
*''Galactica'' alone cannot be used to ferry the people, and the civilian ships alone would not make the trip as they would get lost within the cluster cloud. There is too much algae for ''Galactica'' to bring the food to the people in time.
*The Adamas consider the use of the Raptors, whose navigation systems are radiation-hardened to protect against nuclear strikes, as pilot ships that will guide a group of civilian ships at a time by visual reckoning, relaying the proper jump coordinates once visual sighting is made to get the ships to the other side. Five jumps are needed, and skeleton crews are used on each civilian ship to limit the Fleet's possible losses, with the civilians temporarily transferred to ''Galactica'', which will survive the radiation effects thanks to the [[Galactica type battlestar|battlestar's]] dense hull plating ([[Miniseries]]).
*A group of civilians are bunked on ''Galactica'' from the civilian ships. One of them recognizes Kat, but calls out for her by another name: "Sasha." Kat reacts angrily to the man, [[Enzo]], and barely acknowledges his call before warning him to back off.
*The pilots are briefed on the plan, and each given radiation badges. When Major Adama encourages the use of [[stims]], Kat objects, warning that stims work by boosting the body's metabolism. *The first outbound flight into the cluster begins. The ''[[Adriatic]]'' is lost when its Raptor guide, flown by [[Hot Dog]], cannot locate her.
*Successive trips continue, but another ship, the ''[[Carina]]'', guided by Kat, is lost as well, which greatly angers and saddens her. She stays in the cloud a few minutes too long during her extended search, and her radiation badge becomes dark.
*In the [[hangar deck]], Thrace notices Enzo interacting with Kat and gets suspicious. She later questions Enzo and later, Kat.
*Kat begs Thrace not to tell Admiral Adama about her past life as a drug runner and the fact that she acquired her name, "Louanne Katraine," from a child that died two days after the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Cylon attack]], using it to clear ''Galactica's'' pilot screening when she was a [[nugget]]. Thrace accepts her offer, warning her to embrace who she really is.
*Feeling backed into a corner, Kat is physically stressed. Her hair is falling out, a sign of radiation poisoning. Fearful of what will happen to her if Admiral Adama finds out, she chooses to continue her Raptor flights, swapping her radiation badge with [[Helo]]'s. She allows herself a sexual romp with Enzo before preparing for the last outbound flight.
*The last outbound trip is more destructive. Even ''Galactica'' cannot withstand the heat and begins to suffer heat-related decompression failures throughout its hull. Adama orders his son to wrap out visual sighting and perform the escape jump.
*Kat cannot find her last ship. Realizing she had already absorbed too much radiation, she elects to remain in the cloud to continue searching for her lost ship.
*''Galactica'' waits for several frightening minutes until both Kat's Raptor and the last civilian ship rejoin them.
*Kat is greeted by the command staff and many crewmembers to celebrate her accomplishment. The young pilot pumps her arms in the air and tries to remove her helmet before she collapses from radiation poisoning.
*In [[sickbay]], Kara Thrace talks to Kat, whose exposure to the cloud's radiation was too extreme. Thrace recants a part of her conversation with Kat and her origins, and tries unsuccessfully to leave Kat's bedside with a smile before leaving the dying pilot with a bottle of sleeping pills as a gesture of self-euthanization. Kat thanks her.
*Admiral Adama stands by Kat's bedside immediately after Thrace's departure. Kat attempts to confess her past, but Adama tells her that her past will not change the heroic thing she did for the Fleet. He gives her the status of [[CAG]] once more, a position she held from colonization of [[New Caprica]] to Major Adama's return to ''Galactica'', despite the fact that Kat will not survive to fly again.
*Adama stays at Kat's bedside, talking with her and how he would have loved to have had a third child, commenting that he, like his ex-wife, [[Caroline Adama|Caroline]], would have liked a daughter.
*Some time later, the pilots assemble in their [[Pilot ready rooms|ready room]] as Admiral Adama changes the pilot organization chart, placing Kat as the CAG.

*Baltar notices that Number Three keeps going off somewhere and wonders what she is doing. Caprica-Six tells him that the other Cylons are also concerned about Three's activities.
*Baltar confronts Three about her unexplained absences and surmises that she has been dying and resurrecting over and over again.
*Baltar and Three discuss the final five Cylon agents, who are apparently the figures Three has been seeing between life and death. Baltar wonders aloud if he could be one of them, making him a hero to the Cylons instead of a traitor to the Colonials. Three tries to hold onto the memory of what they look like, but it always fades. Her drawings of them aren't very distinct.
*Baltar and Three visit the Hybrid's chamber. Against Three's advice, Baltar reaches out to touch the Hybrid and she grabs his hand. She says a number of cryptic things which Baltar pieces together as clues about a planet where the Eye of Jupiter can be found, as well as something related to the final five. Baltar states that he is convinced that everything the hybrid says has meaning.

*Was assisted suicide an accepted practice in the Colonies, even if not by a practicing physician?
*Are there going to be radiation consequences for the pilots exposed to the conditions of the star cluster, especially those pilots who did in fact have a black indicator?
*How many pilots and crew were lost on the two civilian ships Adriatic and Carina? Will their loss cause problems for the civilians that used to live on them?

== Analysis ==
*The ranking shuffle resumes in this episode: Tigh returns to the CIC as XO, sending Helo back to the flight lines as a senior flight officer (his rank of Captain seems unaffected). At the end of the episode, Kat is posthumously restored to the CAG slot, with Apollo shunted into her squadron leader position (presumably, he will continue as ''de facto'' CAG).
**Kat's promotion to CAG may have occurred before she died so that upon her death, her posting as CAG would expire and Apollo would regain his position. It makes little sense to be posthumously assigned to a billet. Either way, since her posting is honorary in nature, it is likely temporary.
*Baltar calls the Number Three "D'Anna", to which she responds. This indicates a high likelyhood of her being the same copy that was on Galactica and making her one of a few Cylons that has a name instead of just being a model.
**Or, it may simply indicate acceptance of Baltar's custom of referring to and addressing some models by their "human" names—in this same scene, Baltar refers to "the relevant Simon" and in prior episodes refers to "one of the Dorals"' views on toilet paper. This custom is shared with the other humans, such as Ellen Tigh who mentions "one of the Brother Cavils", and Adama, who refers to both the Ragnar Anchorage copy and the stowaway copy in "[[Flesh and Bone]]" as "Leoben Conoy".
*Number Three does not know what the final five Cylon agent models look like, at least not consciously.
*No anti-radiation injections were used by the pilots. This either means that the Fleet's supplies are used up, or that even the medication doesn't help against such intense levels of stellar radiation.
*The first sketch of the final five Cylons that Number Three shows Baltar depicts what looks to be two men and three women. If this proves accurate then of the twelve Cylon models there are six males and six females.

*This is one of the few times an air group org chart is visible. The CAG (now Kat) is in the top slot; directly below her are (presumably) the squadron leaders (Apollo, Starbuck, Two Times, and a fourth whose name is never visible to the camera). Pilots and ECOs may be listed below their squadron leaders in descending order of seniority (both Helo and Hot Dog, for example, are listed directly beneath their squadron leader, Starbuck, and the two of them are definitely among the senior flight officers for ''Galactica'').

*The episode begins on ''[[Galactica]]'' in a boxing ring, where [[Helo]] and [[Lee Adama]] are exchanging blows. Helo has the advantage.
*Several flashbacks occur where we see Lee Adama waking up on a planetary surface ([[New Caprica]]), confused and looking for someone as he sits up slightly.
*[[Kara Thrace]] and [[Samuel Anders]] complete a lovemaking session, but when Anders wants Thrace to remain, she rebuffs him and leaves her officer's [[duty locker]], throwing the "in use" boots back inside the locker's door.
*Thrace is seen in a flashback, lying on the chest of Lee Adama, suddenly startled and frightened.
*Lee Adama is losing his fight as he is distracted by memories of 17 months ago, or 8 months prior to New Caprica's [[Cylon Occupation Authority|occupation]]. *Roslin and Adama, in the present, appear to show the same look of a close friendship while the boxing transitions to [[Hot Dog]], who unwisely challenges Thrace to a match. Hot Dog initially makes a few blows before Thrace KO's the cocky pilot.

*Adama and Roslin lie together outside, watching the night sky. Later, she snuggles closer to his shoulder, her hand on his chest. Both are quite comfortable, and Adama notes briefly how comfortable he was with Roslin so physically close and with the stars overhead.
*Roslin questions whether if this will all last--the colony, and their respite from the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon's]] chase. She happily resigns to the fact that, no matter what the future holds, the present is good to have.
*Adama's boxing match gets ugly when Adama cold-cocks Tyrol (who has his back turned) as soon as the horn sounds to start the match. Adama appears very edgy.
*The match continues, but Tyrol's anger and youth begins to edge over Adama's experience. During the round's break, Roslin enters the ring, visually concerned and giving boxing tips. Adama states that he can't win this fight, but don't necessarily infer that trying to win was his objective.
*Another flashback, with Thrace and Lee Adama, who are both drunk. Dualla is aboard ship, and Thrace has literally drank Anders, now unconscious, under a nearby table. The two former [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]] pilots exchange intimate words and soon find themselves outside of camp, getting very intimate.
*The two have a gratifying sexual session. After which, Adama happily yells into the nighttime sky that he loves Thrace. Giggling and embarrassed, Thrace soon returns the gesture into the sky, and they return to lovemaking after Adama suggests that they each break up with their respective lovers to become a couple themselves.
*Thrace awakens, confused, and leaves the area, leaving Adama to awaken some time later, alone.
*Lee Adama returns to camp, where his father tells him that Thrace had found a [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies#The Clergy|priest]] and had married Anders earlier that morning. Lee Adama is visibly heartbroken.
*Lee Adama encounters Thrace and Anders. Adama is still visibly upset but hides it long enough to shake hands with Anders in congratulation and to wish Thrace luck: "You're going to need it."
*Recalling the reason for Lee Adama's passion, viewers see Adama and Dualla kissing on the Raptor once more.
*In the present in the boxing ring, Adama is overcome by Tyrol's fight and is knocked to the mat. Everyone watching is silent in concern, and Tyrol helps the admiral up. Adama speaks to the crowd, indicating that, over the last year, he had let his crew, his family, become too close, relaxing their mandate and responisibility to the safety of the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. He notes that his weakness led to the loss of lives. Adama curtly informs the crowd that such lax operations will now cease, and leaves the ring, escorted by Dr. Cottle, Roslin, and her entourage.
*The enthusiasm for boxing has been extinguished by Adama's speech, and Tigh calls it off and dismisses the group. But Thrace challenges Lee Adama to a match by name-calling and an exchange of blows.
*In the ring, Adama initially takes it easy, but a few well placed blows from Thrace dispatch Adama's reticence. The two begin to bludgeon each other, Thrace adding a kickboxing element to kick Adama and keep him off-balance.
*The match soon degenerates into something that the crowd does not enjoy, and many begin to leave. Anders and Dualla stand together, watching the match with no small amount of disappointment, aware of the dark mood between Adama and Thrace, and its history.
*Too tired and beaten to fully continue fighting, Thrace and Adama fall together in a boxer's hug. Thrace whispers that she missed Adama, and he returns the message in kind.

== Analysis ==
*This episode confirms what causes the rift between Kara Thrace and Lee Adama. Thrace avoids the notion of feeling too close with Adama by marrying Anders, and Adama returns to Dualla and soon takes to overeating.
*Adama and Roslin are as relaxed with each other as the two leaders could be, not necessarily chasing romance, but allowing themselves a moment of mutual relaxation, physical closeness, and contemplation.
*Ships are seen flying in heavy power generation equipment of some kind, suggesting that this and many other colonization resources that were too large to retrieve during the [[Second Exodus]] were later abandoned on New Caprica, foretelling an eventual supply shortage.
*Kara Thrace does not feel obligated to follow rules of engagement when she starts to lose. During her fight with Lee Adama, once it became obvious that she stood a good chance of losing she quickly began using armlocks and kicks to gain an advantage. Once knocked to the ground, she swept Adama's legs out from under him. During the fight Lee continued to use only standard boxing techniques despite Kara's departure from the rules.
*The [[Fleet]] population count has risen by one since "[[Hero]]." This is almost certainly not [[Daniel Novacek]], since his arrival in the teaser act of the previous episode was accounted for in the population count in that episode; similarly, the nearly 1,700 member crew of the ''[[Pegasus]]'' was instantly added once they were discovered. It is possible that the on-screen figures are more realistic this season, incorporating births and deaths that would naturally continue to happen anywhere but would not be depicted on-screen.

*According to [[Grace Park]] in an [http://tv.ign.com/articles/705/705789p1.html interview] with IGN.com, "Unfinished Business" is an episode that is mostly composed of flashbacks to events that happened during the one year ahead jump foward that happened at the end of season 2. Ron Moore also said in the podcast for "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]" that there would be flashbacks revealing some of these events: they might be interspersed in several other episodes as well, but Park confirmed that this particular episode dealt almost entirely with various flashbacks to things that happened during the year that was skipped over.
*At a [http://mboard.scifi.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=1833539&page=0&fpart=86&vc=1 convention appearance], [[Jamie Bamber]] said that we would find out in flashbacks in this episode what happened between Apollo and Starbuck during the skipped year that caused a rift between them. He discussed the boxing scene in which Apollo and Starbuck beat the hell out of each other in the final act.

==Biography==
Anders was leading his team in high-altitude training in the mountains outside of [[Delphi]] when the [[Cylon Attack]] occurred and the planet was bombarded with nuclear weapons.

Being in a high-altitude rural area shielded Anders and his team from the blasts and most of the radioactive fallout that followed. He and the Buccaneers become ''ad hoc'' resistance fighters from that point forward, raiding armories and collecting caches of weapons, anti-radiation medication, ammo and supplies in the hopes of staying alive and defending themselves against the Cylons.

Anders was able to rally upwards of 100 people, mostly hikers and survivalists, to his resistance against the Cylons and from the former [[Delphi Union High School]] he was able to strike back at the Cylons for nine months. Unlike [[Karl Agathon|Helo]], the Caprica-based (and pregnant) [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon Valerii]], and [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]], Anders seems to be focused more on surviving on Caprica than he is with leaving the planet.

Anders and his resistance members encounter Starbuck and Helo two months after the initial Cylon attack ([[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]).

Anders' main focus for a time is keeping himself and his resistance movement alive long enough for Kara Thrace to return to Caprica once again with reinforcements from ''Galactica'' and evacuate them. Thrace gives him her [[Identification tags|Fleet ID tags]] as a promise that she would come back for him. While waiting for rescue, Anders plans to locate and destroy as many Cylon hybrid-producing "farms" as possible ([[The Farm]]).

Anders and the resistance movement conduct acts of terrorism against the Cylons after they appropriate Delphi for their own. His aim was to scare the Cylons into believing there is no safe place for them and to kill them in the most gruesome way possible so they remember when they are reborn what it is like to die violently, like in an explosion ([[Downloaded]]).

Anders' physical features vaguely resemble [[Lee Adama]], which perhaps explains Thrace's immediate attraction to him. However, Anders appears much more self-assured than Adama.

Following the Cylon's reappropriation of Delphi, Anders and his fighters continue their insurgency, and carry out a series of attacks on the Cylons, the most notable of which was the destruction of a café which kill roughly 40 Cylons. After planting the bomb in a garage, Anders is trapped with the bomb after defending it from a Centurion. Hiding behind a car on the other side of the garage, Anders is mostly protected from the blast but buried under rubble. Later found by [[Sharon Valerii (Galactica copy)|Boomer]] and [[Number Three]]. Anders is spared, as he would be a useful source of information. When [[Caprica-Six]] talks about genocide and God's love, Anders uses the opening to try and kill Number Three, but is stopped by Boomer. Three is more than willing to take revenge, but all were astonished when Caprica-Six kills Three. Heeding Six's orders to get out, Anders flees, still puzzled by what had transpired ([[Downloaded]]).

Anders survives an assault by the Cylons at the resistance's headquarters -- the same morning that the Caprica [[SAR]] team lands nearby. The Cylons assaulted the remnants of the Resistance as they head for the Raptors ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]]), forcing them to go to higher ground. After the Cylons stop attacking them, Thrace (leading the rescue team) fears the worst. Anders and Thrace promise to kill each other so that the Cylons would be unable to put them in one of their [[farms]]. Miraculously, a [[Cavil|mysterious man]] appears to tell the team that the Cylons had left the Colonies.

Thrace and Anders' relationship picks up where it left off, forcing a rift to occur between Thrace and Lee Adama.

A year later, now married to Thrace on [[New Caprica]], Anders develops [[Wikipedia:pneumonia|pneumonia]], forcing Thrace to beg Lee Adama to release some antibiotics reserved for ''[[Pegasus (RDM)|Pegasus]]''' pilots.

After the Cylons occupy New Caprica, Anders is visited by a copy of [[Leoben Conoy]] who inquires on Kara Thrace's whereabouts ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). Since the Cylons had forced ''Pegasus'' and the defense fleet away from New Caprica, the antibiotics are no longer avaliable to help Anders.

Anders recovers from his sickness and is a leader of the [[New Caprica Resistance]], along with [[Saul Tigh]] and [[Galen Tyrol]]. Thrace was taken from him sometime after the occupation, and he is unsure if she is still alive ([[Occupation]]).

Four months into the occupation, contact is made with a Raptor and a rescue plan is put in motion. Anders meets ''Galactica'''s liaison officer [[Sharon Agathon]] in [[Breeders Canyon]], and the group is ambushed by Cylon Centurions ([[Precipice]]).

After the Centurions are neutralized, a map is found on a dead [[Cylon agent|'skinjob']]. Anders realizes that the map is the one given to [[Ellen Tigh]] to destroy in a heating fire. Tigh is then suspected of collaborating with the Cylons.

Later, Anders is charged by Laura Roslin with protecting [[Maya]] and the cylon-human hybrid baby [[Hera]] ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

Anders then tells [[Saul Tigh]] about his [[Ellen Tigh|wife]]'s betrayal. He tells Tigh that if he doesn't "take care" of the problem, someone else will. After ''Galactica'' jumps into orbit, Anders and a group of resistance fighters set off multiple bombs around New Caprica City. They then retrieve a cache of weapons hidden under the Pyramid court in order storm the [[New Caprica Detention Center]] and free the humans imprisoned within. Inside the detention center, Anders and a team of Marines find an unconscious Kara Thrace in her apartment style prison cell. Anders begins to carry Thrace out of the center but is interrupted after Thrace regains consciousness and runs back to retrieve her daughter, [[Kacey]]. Anders finds Thrace and Kacey back at the apartment, and leads both out of the detention center ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

*"Ander" is derived from a Greek term meaning "Man" (a well known example would be that "Anderson" means "Son of Andrew/Andreas/etc", the name being a descendent of Greek andreios ‘manly’, from aner ‘man’, ‘male’, genitive andros). Fitting, given that Anders is leading the last free humans alive on Caprica in a resistance against the Cylons: it's literally a fight of "Man" versus Machines.

*The tattoo that Anders has on his right arm in Season 3 is his "wedding band". He got it after he married [[Kara Thrace]], who also has a similar tattoo, but it is on her left arm. They match up to form one set of wings and the circles overlap when they're facing each other. Both of them has half of the constellation of Capricorn (a reference to [[Caprica]] obviously) and a small symbol of the planet as well.
