== Overview ==

: ''Led by [[Number Three]], the band of rebel Cylons hold President Roslin and ''Galactica''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> pilots hostage while attempting to lure the "Watchtower Four" out of hiding. Meanwhile, [[Kara Thrace]]'s Viper may hold a previously undiscovered clue to finding [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]].''

== Summary ==

=== Teaser ===

*[[Lee Adama]] is in [[William Adama|William Adama's]] quarters, looking up an illustration of the Temple of [[Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn|Aurora]] on Earth, as described by [[Pythia]]. [[Kara Thrace]] walks in an greets him, and they briefly discuss the temple, and the absence of William Adama and [[Laura Roslin]]. Lee comments on how both he and Tigh are intimidated by Adama's chair. Thrace talks about how [[Leoben Conoy|Leoben]] stated that, for children to reach their full potential, their parents have to die.
*In the [[Basestar command|basestar control room]], Roslin, William Adama, [[D'Anna Biers]] and Leoben discuss the plans to return the [[Final Five]]. Biers mentions that there are only four in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] and refuses to provide answers when Roslin questions her about the fifth's location. When Adama asks for their names, she expresses skepticism, suggesting that the Colonials may kill them. Roslin points out that the Colonials need them because they know the way to Earth, while Leoben recommends co-operation and D'Anna refutes him, citing the [[Exodus, Part II|failure]] of [[Occupation|co-operation]] on [[New Caprica]].
*Biers announces that she will hold the Colonials on the ship hostage until the Final Four are safely aboard the basestar. When a standoff between the Colonials and the Centurions ensues, Roslin tells Adama to stand down and he repeats the order to the other pilots. Three tells Adama to accompany her to ''[[Galactica]]'' on a Raptor. He initially refuses, but Roslin tells him to go. She embraces him and whispers in his ear that if the Cylons get the four, they get [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], and he can't allow that to happen, even if he has to destroy the basestar with them aboard.
*In [[CIC]], [[Felix Gaeta]] - having returned to duty despite still having problems with his [[Guess What's Coming to Dinner|amputated leg]] - accidentally knocks over a bottle of pills. [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] helps him by picking up the pill bottle. Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] asks Gaeta if he wishes to be relieved, but he declines and takes a drink to numb the pain.
*Gaeta then announces the arrival of the rebel baseship and that a Raptor launched from it. On the [[hangar deck]], Adama and Three step out of the Raptor. [[Galen Tyrol]] and [[Samuel Anders]] look on from the catwalk, wondering whether Three can or will identify them. While William Adama greets his son, Three steps off the Raptor and looks at each of the Final Four.
*William Adama and Biers explain the situation. Biers claims that she is already in contact with the four, that they would come to her willingly and that all the Fleet needs to do is not interfere with shuttle traffic. The Adamas agree to her terms. As Three is about to leave, [[Tory Foster]] steps forward, asking to bring Roslin her medication and see if she is alright. Knowing that she wants to defect, Tigh tries to prevent her from going by saying that they shouldn't give the Cylons more hostages, but he is overruled by the Adamas.
*In the Adama's quarters, William and Lee Adama, Tigh and Thrace discuss a plan to rescue the hostages. The admiral mentions Roslin's recommendation, but tells his son that it is his call. President Adama agrees.

=== Act 1 ===
*In the [[Situation Room]], [[Sharon Agathon]] and Kara Thrace officially present their rescue plan. Tigh expresses skepticism at the expected high losses of boarding the basestar, saying there have to be other options. Thrace sarcastically comments that the four could just give themselves up.
*On the basestar, Foster is led to the control room. Three announces that one of the Final Five has arrived. [[Number Two|Leoben]] expresses doubt, but Three attests that she saw her in her vision. Foster smiles as the Cylons gather around her in amazement.
*In another room, Roslin bandages [[Gaius Baltar]], who thanks her for not killing him, but Roslin confesses that she told Adama to destroy the basestar should the Cylons get the four. Foster walks in with a [[Number Six|Six]], greeting them and bringing Roslin her medication. Roslin thanks her, and asks how she was able to do so, and Foster says that she came with Three to be with her people. Baltar attests that he subconsciously knew, that she was one of the Final Five. When asked if she had any idea, Roslin says no, and Foster tells her it might be worth pondering other things she has been wrong about, then starts to walk out. Roslin tells her to stop, and asks her to convince Three to release the hostages. Foster coldly replies that she's done taking orders from her.
*A body flies out of the baseship. In CIC, Lee Adama receives a transmission from Three, who announces that there has been a change of plans. She has executed the first hostage and will continue to execute hostages every quarter hour until they have the four. Adama tries to reason with her, telling her that she did not giving them a chance and that they are co-operating, but Dualla states that Three has terminated the transmission. As a result, Adama authorizes the rescue mission and to destroy the baseship should it fail
*On the hangar deck, as the pilots and deck crew prepare for the mission, Tyrol begins hearing the [[The Music|strange music]] again, heavily distorted by screeching and static. In a [[pilot ready rooms|pilot ready room]], as Starbuck and Athena brief the pilots, Anders likewise hears the music, as does Foster on the basestar.
*On ''Galactica'' Anders, Tigh and Tyrol are drawn to [[Starbuck's Viper]]. Tyrol suggests that something about the Viper has changed, and Anders suggests they get Starbuck. Tigh agrees, then walks out.
*Tigh walks into William Adama's office, telling him to scrub the mission. When asked if he has another option instead, Tigh confesses that he has known that he is a Cylon since the [[Ionian nebula]]. Adama expresses doubt and can't believe that his decade-long friend could by a Cylon. He suggests that Tigh could have been brainwashed on [[New Caprica]] and says they should see Doctor [[Cottle]]. Tigh says that he should have killed himself when he found out and suggests that Three will back down if he is used as a hostage.

=== Act 2 ===

*As [[Colonial Marine Corps|Marines]] escort Tigh through the hallways, William Adama suffers a nervous breakdown. He rampages through his office, smashes his fist into a mirror and drinks heavily. As Adama cries, his son finds him and tries to comfort him. Adama says that he can't kill Tigh and Lee tells him that he will handle it.
*In a [[Launch tube (RDM)|launch tube]], Lee Adama interrogates Tigh, demanding to know who the other Cylons are. From the control room, [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]] announces that D'Anna Biers is on the line. Adama threatens to kill Tigh if she harms one of the hostages, and says that she has ten minutes before he kills him. From Tigh he again demands the identities of the rest of the Final Four in order to save the Fleet.
*Around [[Starbuck's Viper]], Thrace expresses doubt about Anders and Tyrol's suspicion regarding the Viper. Marines come in and arrest Anders and Tyrol. When Thrace asks what's going on, Sergeant [[Brandy Harder|Harder]] replies that they are Cylons. Shocked, Thrace questions Anders, who confirms that it is true. As he is dragged away, Anders insists that something is different about the Viper.
*On the basestar, an [[Number Eight|Eight]] and two [[Cylon Centurion|Centurions]] force the captured pilots down a hallway. [[Brendan Costanza|Hot Dog]] tells the pilots to fall back, and the Eight threatens to shoot them if they don't keep moving.
*Anders and Tyrol are brought into the launch tube to join Tigh. Lee Adama orders Dualla to get the baseship on the line again.
*On the hangar deck, Thrace climbs into her Viper's cockpit.
*On the baseship, Roslin and Baltar hear the hostages and Centurions. A [[Number Two|Two]] walks in and Roslin asks what's going on. The Two says that Three is about to start executing more hostages. When Roslin requests that she be taken to Three, Baltar insists that she won't listen to her, and that he be taken instead, because he was with her when she had the vision in the [[Temple of Five]]. Roslin agrees.
*Lee Adama tells Three that he has Anders and Tyrol in the airlock, and demands that she stand down.
*Thrace begins activating her Viper's systems.
*Tory Foster tells Three that she knows Adama and that he will back down if pressure. Three orders to target nuclear weapons on the civilian fleet when Baltar walks in and begins begins talking to her.
*Thrace continues activating her electronics and suddenly detects a signal with one instrument.
*Baltar argues that coercion won't work with Lee Adama because he is too similar to his father, while Foster argues that he is bluffing.
*Dualla tells Adama that the baseship's nuclear missiles have gone hot. Both conclude that the Fleet couldn't spool up their [[FTL|jump drives]] quickly enough to escape before the Cylons fire. Adama orders that everyone except Tigh be removed from the tube.
*On the basestar, Baltar suggests that [[God (RDM)|God]] may have brought Three back for a different purpose, to end the conflict peacefully. She argues that the Colonials will never forgive the Cylons for [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|what they did to the Twelve Colonies]], and gives the order to proceed.
*As the launch tube door closes, Thrace runs through the ship.
*Baltar argues to Three that brute force did not work for the Cylons on [[New Caprica]] or the [[algae planet]], and that it will not work now.
*Adama asks Dualla for the key and begins the process of de-pressurizing the launch tube.
*An Eight announces that they have weapons lock on the Colonial ships.
*Tigh tells Adama to stop hesitating and flush the airlock. As Adama is about to push the button, Thrace runs in, telling Adama to stop. She says that the Cylons just gave them [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]].

=== Act 3 ===

*Lee Adama sits in Starbuck's Viper, recognizing a Colonial emergency locator signal, and notes that no other [[wireless]] in the Fleet is picking it up. Thrace argues to a skeptical Adama that it must be a signal from Earth, insisting that some higher power is orchestrating events for a purpose and wants the Colonials to find Earth with the Cylons.
*Thrace, Lee Adama, the Final Four, Number Three, Marines and Centurions stand around the Viper and an Eight sits inside. They discuss the signal. Adama says that he decided to share the information with the Cylons rather than jump away, because it would only lead to another confrontation down the road. He argues that peace is possible and says that he has granted the Final Four an amnesty. Three agrees to release the hostages.
*Adama shows his father the location of Earth, asking for orders. Roslin walks in and says she wants to see him pick up the first fistful of earth. He walks away saying that he'll be back. Lee Adama talks to Roslin about stepping down, and she praises him on resolving the crisis, saying the Fleet will need that kind of leadership in the years to come.
*Admiral Adama returns in uniform, saying they should find Earth. His son says that he has been working on a recon mission with Thrace. Admiral Adama replies that everyone should go together, that they don't have anywhere else to go, and that the alliance will fall apart if they hesitate too long. In his view, they need to [[List of terms (RDM)#hard six|roll the hard six]].

=== Act 4 ===

*In the CIC, Dualla announces that the Fleet is ready to jump. Admiral Adama tells Roslin that they wouldn't have made it without her and asks her to give the order. She does so. Dualla counts down and the Fleet jumps.
*The entire Fleet - now including the rebel basestar - successfully jumps. Adama tells Gaeta to take his time with confirming their location. After some seconds, Gaeta announces that the [[Tomb of Athena|constellations]] match. The Fleet has jumped into orbit of a blue/white planet - Earth.
*Adama makes a speech to the whole Fleet, announcing that they have arrived at Earth. All over ''Galactica'' and throughout the Fleet people rejoice ecstatically.
*A detachment of Vipers, [[Raptors]], [[Heavy Raider]]s, [[Cylon freighter (RDM)|Cylon freighters]], as well as several civilian ships fly towards the surface.
*On Earth, Adama lifts up a handful of soil. Someone next to him reads the dirt with a [[w:Geiger counter|Geiger counter]]. The soil is irradiated. Laura Roslin stands next to Adama, disappointed. Number Three is stunned.
*Many others, including [[Karl Agathon|Karl]] and [[Sharon Agathon]], Gaius Baltar, Lee Adama, Kara Thrace, the Final Four, and the Cylons are on the surface as well, walking and standing around on a riverbank near the ruins of a city, which was apparently destroyed. The mood is dismal, with everyone probably wondering what happened to Earth and what they will do next.

== Notes ==

* This episode is the mid-season cliffhanger for the first ten episodes of [[Season 4 (2008-09)|Season 4]]. The conclusion to the cliffhanger, "[[Sometimes a Great Notion]]", will not air until 2009.
* The episode was given an advance screening in Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 11th, in order to draw attention for the upcoming Emmy Award nominations. <ref>{{cite_web|url=http://syfyportal.com/news425104.html|title='Battlestar Galactica' Hosting Free Screening In L.A.}}</ref>
* As D'Anna Biers executes one prisoner during the course of the episode, the population of the Fleet when it arrives at Earth is 39,664, not counting the four Significant Seven Cylons who have now joined them.

== Analysis ==
* D'Anna Biers holding the Colonial personnel hostage isn't aimed so much as to President Adama and the government, as it is to the remaining three of the Final Four who choose to remain behind. When Foster moves to defect under the guise of giving Roslin her medicine, Colonel Tigh speaks up to prevent her from going. This earns Tigh and the other two who refuse to come forward Biers's enmity and she begins killing their crew mates until they join the Cylons
* [[Tory Foster]] actively advises Number Three in her test of wills with Lee Adama, pressing for more aggressive tactics. She appears to be combining embracing her Cylon nature with misanthropy.
* How [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]] came to the state which the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] found it in is uncertain. Given that the landing party tests the soil with a Geiger counter, and the ruins they come across appear to be from a nuclear blast, it is likely that some nuclear event occurred on Earth. Together with the clear remnants of a modern civilization, this means that the series is set in the future and not the past (barring that is is set in an alternate universe).
* Assuming that a nuclear event was responsible for the current condition of Earth, it appears that it happened a considerable number of years, if not decades or hundreds of years, ago. Less than a week after the Cylon bombardment, the planet [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprica]] had turned yellowish-brown from dust blasted into the atmosphere, creating a [[w:nuclear winter|nuclear winter]] ([[33]]). Nine months later, someone on Caprica would have still seen yellow skies ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]). Although the soil of Earth at the landing site is radioactive, the skies are a natural foggy/cloudy gray, and the view from orbit is of a blue-white world.
* The area the landing party arrives at appears to be the Brooklyn side of [[w:New York City|New York City]]. The landing party is next to a broad river and across that river to the left is a wide bay. The other shore appears to be the edge of Lower Manhattan with a destroyed skyline of buildings. The camera pans to the right over what is ostensibly the [[w:East River|East River]] until the last two seconds of the episode, where at the far right edge of the screen stands a wrecked structure with a heavily abbreviated roadway. It appears to be the East Tower (Brooklyn side) of the [[w:Brooklyn Bridge|Brooklyn Bridge]]. However, it should be noted that the information on this is incomplete. For instance, many speculations as to the gas giant that [[Kara Thrace]] sees in her journey from Earth (as first explained in "[[He That Believeth In Me]]") claimed that the giant was [[w:Jupiter|Jupiter]], when this was [[Faith|later disproved]].
*The landing area actually appears to be the Temple of [[Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn|Aurora]], thus bookending the episode. When the episode begins, [[Lee Adama]] is looking up an illustration of the Temple in [[Pythia]]'s book. It shows a dome structure near a body of water. As the episode closes on Earth, the landing party appears to be at the ruins of a domed structure by a body of water, as described by the illustration.
* When Thrace says to Lee Adama (while he is looking at the drawing of the Temple of Aurora) "We'll get there, and walk those halls together", Adama says "Yeah, pretty to think so." This could be a reference to the last line of Ernest Hemingway's ''[[w:The Sun Also Rises|The Sun Also Rises]]'' when Jake Barnes says "Yeah, isn't it pretty to think so?" about the idea that he and Brett Ashley could have been in love.

== Questions ==

* Which pilot did [[Number Three]] airlock?
* Is [[Number Three]] honest in her claim that there are only four of the Final Five in the [[Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]? If so, where is the fifth and last Cylon? If she's lying, is it because she still harbors distrust for her compatriots and the humans?
* What of the other [[Number One|Ones]], [[Number Four|Fours]], and [[Number Five|Fives]]?
* What happened to [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]]?
* What condition is the rest of Earth in?
* Will the other Cylons find the Fleet and the rebels, as well as Earth? If so, will they finish [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|what they]] [[Cylon Civil War|started]]?
* Does the [[Thirteenth Tribe (RDM)|Thirteenth Tribe]] still exist? If so, where are they now?
* Will the Colonials and their Cylon allies settle on Earth, or will they move on in hopes of finding a more suitable planet?
* Will Tigh, Anders, and Tyrol continue their duties on ''Galactica'' despite having been exposed as Cylons?
* Now that his brief presidency has come to an end, will Lee Adama resume his duties on the Quorum? If not, what will his new role be?
== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''[[William Adama]] has a nervous breakdown after learning that his best friend of 30 years, [[Saul Tigh]], is a Cylon, and having him arrested to be executed. [[Lee Adama|His son]] finds him and drags his father's sobbing form to a bulkhead where he cradles his father from behind.''
:'''William Adama:''' [Crying, Sobbing, despair...]
:'''Lee Adama:''' [voice quavering]: Dad listen...No one suspected, no one! Not with his record. Not what he did on New Caprica. His eye... What happened to his wife... Come on, let's get up.
:'''William:''' What have I done? [breathlessly] All of the people I've sent to die? For what? For what!?!
:'''Lee:''' [quietly] For Earth...
:'''William:''' [angrily]: There is no Earth. [sobs] It is a frakkin' joke! There is no Earth! [sobs]
:'''Lee:''' Okay dad, listen to me...[firmer and takes his father face between his hands] Listen to me!! Pull it together!!
:'''William:''' I can't...
:'''Lee''' [frustrated]: Yes you can! Come on!
:'''William:''' I can't....
:'''Lee:''' [frustrated] Yes you ca...
:'''William:''' I can't.... I can't kill him... I can't kill the bastard! I can't....
:'''Lee:''' Okay, okay dad [he cradles his father's face]
:'''William:''' I can't....
:'''Lee:''' It's....It's gonna be okay....It's gonna be okay... I'll... I'll take care of it.. I'll take care of it [kisses his father's forehead].

*''[[Tory Foster]] to [[Laura Roslin]] after confessing that she is a Cylon:''
:'''Foster:''' You had no idea, did you?
:'''Roslin:''' No.
:'''Foster:''' Might be worth pondering what else you've been wrong about.

*''Upon confirmation of their position in orbit of Earth, [[William Adama|Admiral Adama]] makes an announcement to the Fleet:''
:"Crew of ''Galactica''. People of the fleet. This is Admiral Adama. Three years ago I promised to lead you to a new home. We've endured a difficult journey, we've all lost, we've all suffered, and the truth is I questioned whether this day would ever come. But today our journey is at an end. We have arrived, at Earth."

*''Laura Roslin observes the vacant ruins on Earth:''
== Overview ==

: ''Pursuing the [[Resurrection Hub]] at the whim of the Hybrid, a team of Viper pilots and Cylon rebels become uneasy collaborators as they formulate a battle plan to unbox the [[Number Three|Three]]s and destroy Cylon resurrection forever. Meanwhile, Roslin and Baltar try desperately to communicate with the panicking [[Hybrid]] and Helo discovers a disturbing characteristic within one of the [[Number Eight|Eights]].''

== Summary ==

:''The episode takes place concurrently with "[[Sine Qua Non]]"

=== Teaser ===
*After the [[Hybrid]] unexpectedly initiates an [[FTL]] jump, [[Laura Roslin]] has a brief vision of herself and [[Elosha]] standing in ''Galactica''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s empty hallways.
*The Hybrid soon makes a second jump, and Roslin's vision continues. In [[sickbay]] she encounters a dying version of herself.

=== Act 1 ===
*An [[Number Eight|Eight]] determines that the Hybrid is panicking due to [[Natalie]]'s injury. [[Gaius Baltar]] attempts to calm her, initially appearing to be successful, but the Hybrid jumps again. Roslin's vision continues, and she sees [[Kara Thrace]], Dr. [[Cottle]] and the Adamas standing over her bed. Elosha speaks to the dying Roslin, chastising her for her lack of empathy.
*The Eight tells [[Karl Agathon]] that the Hybrid is following the [[Resurrection Hub]] and discusses an attack strategy with him.
*When the Eight massages Agathon's back, he comments that [[Sharon Agathon|his wife]] learned to do so after meeting him, and the Eight reveals that she accessed Athena's memories from her[[Rapture|last download]].
*Agathon speaks to Roslin in the Raptor. The president tells him that he is to bring [[Number Three]] directly to her and not to the Cylons.
*On the Resurrection Hub, a D'Anna Biers is awakened by [[Number One|Cavil]] and [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]], who tell her about the [[Cylon Civil War]] that was caused by her actions. Three makes a disparaging remark about the Eights' fickleness.

=== Act 2 ===
*In the [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]] hangar, Agathon and an Eight give a mission briefing to a number of [[Number Six|Sixes]], Eights and Colonial pilots. Several pilots, notably [[Paolo McKay|Paolo "Redwing" McKay]] and [[Eammon Pike]], express concerns about their safety and the reliability of the Cylon pilots. A six tells tells them that they are just as well trained as them, and the Eight tells them that they trust Athena, and can trust them just as well.
*Baltar and Roslin attempt to question the Hybrid with little success. They bicker and Baltar walks off, and then the Hybrid declares that a Three has been unboxed and jumps again.
*Continuing the vision, Elosha and Roslin walk through the hallways of ''Galactica''. Roslin speculates that Elosha and the visions are a manifestation of her subconscious. Roslin and Elosha see [[William Adama]] reading ''[[Searider Falcon]]'' to the dying Roslin.
*After the jump, Baltar begins talking to a [[Cylon Centurion|Centurion]] about hierarchy and religion, asserting that the Centurion is loved by [[God (RDM)|God]] as well.
*Speaking to Roslin, Agathon is disappointed that she wants to betray the alliance between humans and Cylons, and thinks that they can trust the Eights. Roslin tells him that he shouldn't let the experiences with his wife cloud his judgment and orders him to as she says.

=== Act 3 ===
*On the Resurrection Hub, Boomer comments with alarm on the arrival of the rebel basestar. Cavil tries to convince Number Three to talk to the rebels and defuse the conflict, but she replies curtly and threatens to shout out the names of the [[Final Five]]. Boomer reports that the rebel basestar has launched 25 [[Heavy Raider]]s.
*Outside the Hub, the Heavy Raiders release the [[Viper (RDM)|Vipers]] they have been towing behind them. The Raiders attack defending basestars, while the Vipers head towards the Hub.
*Cavil deduces that the rebels are attempting to destroy the Hub, and comments that doing so would be mass murder, and would make death permanent for Cylons. On hearing this Three breaks Cavil's neck and Boomer flees.
*Missiles destroy a node at the top of the Hub, taking out its FTL drive. Subsequently, Agathon and the Eight head towards the Hub in a [[Raptor]]. On the Hub, they encounter the D'Anna Biers and the dead Cavil. Seeing explosions around them, Agathon tells Three to run and grabs her arm.
*[[Eammon Pike]] panics as his Raptor is almost disabled and wants to jump back to the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]. [[Diana Seelix]] urges him not to, telling him that the Fleet is too far way. When Pike is initiating the jump, the Raptor his hit by fire from a Raider, hitting Pike in the chest, who manages to hit the jump button.
*On the Hub, Agathon hesitates upon seeing a number of inert Numer Eight bodies. The Eight tells him they should leave, and drags the objecting Three.
*Baltar continues to evangelize to the Centurion, but as the basestar is hit by a missile salvo, the explosion destroys the Centurion and seriously injures Baltar.
*Two Marines carry Baltar to a bed while Roslin carries in a [[medkit]]. Roslin orders them out, bandaging Baltar and injecting him with [[morpha]]. In his drug-addled state Baltar talks to Roslin about religion, telling her that he once harbored terrible guilt. Pressed on what that guilt is for he tells Roslin that he unwittingly gave the Cylons the [[CNP|access codes]] prior to the [[fall of the Twelve Colonies]]. He compares the fall to the flood [[Pythia]] spoke of, which wiped out most of humanity and rejuvenated them. Shocked by Baltar's confession, Roslin tries to kill Baltar by removing his bandages. As he loses blood he begs her to stop.

=== Act 4 ===
*Agathon announces that he has D'Anna Biers and orders a nuclear strike on the Hub. The Vipers fire nuclear missiles into the Hub, destroying it and at least one of the two enemy basestars.
*Baltar continues to beg for his life.
*There is another jump. In Roslin's vision, William Adama stands over a dying Roslin, while Roslin and Elosha watch them. Elosha convinces Roslin to show Baltar mercy, saying that humanity cannot be saved on a "case-by-case basis".
*With a sudden change of heart Roslin desperately checks to see if Baltar is still alive, then begins re-bandaging him.
*Aboard the basestar with the Three, Agathon argues with the Eight, saying that his orders are to take Three to the president. The Eight is upset and Three comments cynically that such double-crossing is a very human trait.
*Agathon brings Three to Roslin, who orders him out and tells him to not let anyone else in. Three immediately inspects the injured Baltar and speculates that he is likely to survive. When asked about the Final Five, she jokes Laura Roslin is one of them, but refuses to provide any information until she feels she is safe; the information being the only thing she has now that she the only Three left in the universe. She says she will tell Roslin who the Final Five are after she is taken back to the human Fleet.
*Sometime later Roslin sits alone listening to the Hybrid. As the Hybrid jumps she has a final encounter with Elosha, whom she sees in the same room this time.
*Waiting in space, William Adama sees the basestar jumping in. In the landing bay, he meets Laura Roslin. He tells her that he missed her and she admits her feelings too, saying that she loves him. The two embrace.

== Notes ==

=== Story ===

*The [[survivor count]] at the top of the show notes the already established death on Lieutenant [[Eammon Pike]], whose body is discovered in the [[Raptor]] that managed to jump to the Fleet. Other human fatalities are impossible to determine as a result of the battle.
*The events of this episode, starting from the [[Hybrid]]'s [[FTL|jump]] of the rebel [[basestar (RDM)|basestar]] in "[[Guess What's Coming To Dinner?]]", and [[William Adama]]'s mission to stay behind in a Raptor awaiting [[Laura Roslin]]'s return spans two days. Ergo, the events of "[[Sine Qua Non]]" occur over the course of two days.
* Unlike previous episodes, this episode is part of the same overall story occurring concurrently with the episode before it (Sine Qua Non). The episode shows the events from the baseship's perspective, whereas "Sine Qua Non" shows the uncertainty and reactions to said uncertainty from the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]]'s perspective.
*Roslin and Adama have finally admitted their feelings for each other.

=== Cylons ===

*[[Number Two]]/[[Leoben Conoy]] is notably absent from the episode (appearing only in the recap at the beginning), and only Sixes and Eights are among the Cylons fighting in the battle. Since actor [[Callum Keith Rennie]] is credited for the episode, it is likely that scenes with him were shot but cut.
*There is only one [[Number Three]] in existence, and any possibility of [[Boxing|unboxing]] the others has been lost.
*With the destruction of the Resurrection Hub, the Cylons have permanently lost the ability to download into new bodies.
* As previously shown in "[[The Farm]]", [[Heavy Raider]]s are piloted by humanoid Cylons unlike the smaller autonomous [[Raider (RDM)|Raiders]].
* This episode contains the first mention of [[Natalie]]'s name in dialogue.

== Analysis ==

* Roslin enters a hallucinatory trance state as the basestar jumps about wildly. Roslin has not previously experienced this sensation during the Fleet's jumps, although Kara Thrace underwent something similar in "[[He That Believeth In Me]]". Moreover, [[Callandra Tyrol|Cally Henderson]] exhibited symptoms of vertigo during ''Galactica's'' first jump in the [[Miniseries, Night 2|Miniseries]].
* Over the course of the series, the [[Number Eight|Eights]] have been notorious for shifting their alliances. [[Number Three]]'s comment about the Eight model's tendency to be passionate allies until they see "something shiny" seems to be yet another example of the fickle nature of the Number Eight model. A somewhat more direct observation of this fact is shown in "[[Faith]]" when [[Sharon Agathon]] denounces a group of Eights after hearing their desire to rebel against [[Natalie]] and the other [[Number Six]] models.
* The battle in this episode bears a striking resemblance to "[[Resurrection Ship, Part I|Resurrection Ship, Parts I]] and [[Resurrection Ship, Part II|II]]". In both episodes, a shaky alliance between ''Galactica'' and another force takes on an ostensibly irreplaceable Cylon resurrection facility by first disabling its FTL capability and then engaging it directly with fighters. Furthermore, both sides plan to double-cross each other after the successful execution of the attack.
* Roslin's suspicions of Baltar, which she has had since "[[Epiphanies]]" (and had a vague inkling of in "[[Six of One]]") have finally been confirmed.

== Questions ==

*What role does the [[Resurrection Hub|Hub]] play in the proper functioning of other [[Resurrection Ship]]s? Why are these apparently vital functions centralized?
*Why do the Cylons have only one Resurrection Hub and the implied inability to build another? If the Cylons are capable of building a new Hub, how long would it take them?
*Why is the Hub so poorly defended by Cavil's faction?
*Does [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] make it off of the Hub before it is destroyed?
*How will Cavil's condescending attitude toward Sharon Valerii ("Pet Eight") affect her?
*Where are the [[Number Two]]s during all these events?
*Have other Eights have accessed Athena's memories, and how will this affect her relationship with Karl Agathon?
*What will happen to the rebel Cylons and their baseship?
*How will the rebel Cylons respond to Roslin's deception regarding [[Number Three]]?
*Will the Cylons - especially with Natalie dead - return to their earlier plan of taking hostages in order to gain access to Three?
*Is Roslin's vision of [[Elosha]] related to other characters' [[Virtual beings|internal manifestations]], such as Baltar's [[virtual Six]] or simply a manifestation of Roslin's subconsciousness, as Roslin believes? Or is it the Hybrid speaking to her as Elosha between the jumps?
*What will happen to Baltar now that his guilt regarding the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|attack on the Colonies]] has been revealed?
*Is Baltar's evangelizing of the [[Cylon Centurion|Centurion]] genuine or an attempt to obtain a useful ally? Does the Centurion fully understand Baltar's intentions?
*Could Baltar's actions have any adverse effects on the thoughts of the other Centurions in some way?

== Noteworthy Dialogue ==
* ''[[D'Anna Biers]] has just been unboxed and resurrected and is in the tank. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii and Cavil are present. After being told that the Eights are on the opposite side of the Ones (Cavils) in the Cylon Civil War, Three inquires as to why Boomer is there:''
:'''Biers''' [looks at Boomer directly]: Boomer's an Eight. Shouldn't she be on the other side? [Boomer looks sternly at Three]
:'''Cavil''': Boomer is my "Pet Eight". She has seen the light of reason. An Eight can make a passionate ally.
:'''Biers''' [contemptuously]: Oh, until she sees something shiny! [Boomer's expression is stern]

*''Laura Roslin and [[Karl Agathon]] are discussing the possibility that a Three has been unboxed. Agathon disagrees with her plan to keep Three from the Cylons and doesn't think that the Cylons would betray them like that.''
:'''Karl Agathon''' [shaking his head]: No, no, I don't think so. Not the Sharons, the Eights.
:'''Laura Roslin''' [patiently but firmly]: Captain, you are not married to the entire production line. I cannot afford to be sentimental right now. I cannot afford you to be sentimental either. If you can't do this job, find me someone who can.

* ''Aboard Karl Agathon's Raptor after the destruction of the Resurrection Hub:''
:'''D'anna Biers:''' And with a whimper, every Cylon in the universe begins to die.
:'''Number Eight:''' Yes, that's right, and it's a good thing, D'Anna, because now there's no difference. We can all start trusting each other.

* ''In Roslin's vision, as Roslin and [[Elosha]] watch Adama stand over a dying Roslin:''
:'''Elosha:''' I'm not saying Baltar's done more good than harm in the universe; he hasn't. The thing is, the harder it is to recognize someone's right to draw a breath, the more crucial it is. If humanity is going to prove itself worthy of surviving, it can't do it on a case by case basis. A bad man feels his death just as keenly as a good man.
:'''Laura Roslin:''' What do you want from me here?
:[Adama appears at dying Roslin's bedside]
:'''William Adama:''' Laura.
:'''Elosha:''' Just love someone.
:'''Laura Roslin:''' Love." Huh!'
:[Life monitor flatlines]
:'''William Adama:''' You go. You go. You go to your rest now. [Sobs] I'm not gonna be selfish anymore. You go. Rest.

* ''Roslin and Adama tenderly greeting each other on the basestar's hangar deck:''
:'''Adama''': Missed you.
:'''Roslin''': Me too.
:'''Roslin''' [Embracing Adama]: I love you.
:'''Adama''' [Breaking the embrace; looks into her eyes]: About time.

* ''[[Gaius Baltar]]'' reveals to Roslin his guilt over the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|original attacks on the Colonies]]:
: "[[Pythia]] talks about a flood that wiped out most of humanity. Nobody blames the flood. The flood is a force of nature. Through the flood, mankind is rejuvenated -- born again. I was not a flood, you see. I blamed myself... I blamed myself. But God had made the man who made that choice. God made us all perfect. And in that thought, all my guilt flies away -- flies away like a bird."

* ''Number Three answering Laura Roslin's question:''
: '''D'Anna Biers''': Suppose you've got some questions for me.
: '''Roslin''': Yes I do. I'd like to talk about the five Cylons in my fleet.
: '''Biers''': So you know about the Final Five?
: '''Roslin''': I know they're supposed to know the way to Earth.
: '''Biers''': But you don't know that you're one of them.
:[Roslin freezes shocked]
: '''Biers''': [Bursting out laughing] Please your face! [Roslin looks relieved and smirks] Oh, it's ridiculous. No. Look, I'm not giving you any names. Not until I feel like I'm safe. 'Cause information is all I got, sweetie.
== Overview ==
:''[[Kara Thrace]] leads a [[Demetrius|ship]] in her search for [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], while ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> crew deals with political and marital issues. On the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] side, the [[Significant Seven]]'s solidarity is challenged.

== Summary ==

=== On ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' and the Colonial Fleet ===
* [[Cally Tyrol]], waking from [[Nicholas Tyrol|her son's]] cries, has dreams recalling arguments with her husband, [[Galen Tyrol|Galen]], of apparently finding herself spending more time alone with her child and Galen avoiding her through work or other activity. In one scene she is taking medication, perhaps to help her sleep, or to fight depression.
* The dark room is unkempt, and medication and baby formula bottles are stacked on a table.
* When Cally Tyrol realizes that Nicky is actually crying, she comforts him and returns him to his crib. She calls [[Anastasia Dualla|Dualla]], apparently to try to find her husband with no luck. She finds a napkin for [[Joe's bar]] in his clothing.
* At the bar, Galen Tyrol and [[Tory Foster]] are drinking [[ambrosia]] and other spirits. Galen laments that, before [[Final Five|their revelation]], he knew what he was: husband, crew chief, and father. Now, his identity is taking a beating.
* Foster flirts with Galen as Cally walks holding her son in a dreamy state (presumably drug related) to Joe's Bar. Cally's distorted vision believes she sees Foster touching Galen's arm seductively. Entering the bar, Cally angrily yells at Galen as he tries to explain. Angry and hurt, Cally takes her son and leaves the bar as Foster looks on, still drinking and not the least upset that she might have caused the Tyrol's strife.
*In [[sickbay]], Dr. [[Cottle]] administers to [[Laura Roslin]] another [[diloxin]] treatment, noting that the drug's nausea should go away in an hour.
* As Roslin tries to relax on the bed, [[William Adama]] sits by her bedside and begins to read from a book to her, ''[[Love and Bullets]]'', by Nick Talo, apparently a detective mystery novel.
* The book's passages of a character's lost love appear to reflect through Adama as he gazes at Roslin while he completes the passage: "From the moment I open my eyes, she's in my blood, bittersweet, tinged with regret. I'll never be free of her, nor do I want to be. For she is what I am, all that is, should always be."
* The scene shifts to a press conference on ''[[Colonial One]]'' where [[Lee Adama]] accepts appointment to the [[Caprica (RDM)|Caprican]] seat to the [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]]. Vice President [[Tom Zarek]] is also in attendance.
*The press asks about questions of loyality between Lee Adama and his role in the [[Gaius Baltar]] trial, which Roslin dismisses.
* Reporter [[Playa Palacios]] asks about the whereabouts of the ''[[Demetrius]]'', missing now three weeks, Roslin defers the question to Admiral Adama, who cryptically explains that the ship is on a military mission. When [[Sekou Hamilton]] asks if [[Kara Thrace]] was made captain of that ship, Adama dismisses that as rumor.
*Roslin quickly ends the press conference. In her office, Roslin tells Adama she is surprised that the press took as long to ask about the ''Demetrius'' as they did. When Adama tells Roslin he think the issue will "blow over," Roslin disagrees. Not told of the mission, Roslin is angered that she may have to help Adama cover the true mission of the ship for a long time. Adama explains that he had to give Thrace a chance and himself a chance to believe in the [[Maelstrom|presumed-dead]] pilot, but Roslin only says, "Apparently." Adama leaves her office in silence.
*Galen Tyrol tries to explain to Cally that he and Tory Foster aren't having an affair, but Cally all but ignores him, telling him to drop their son off to the day care area and to ask the caregivers not to feed Nicky any of the [[Algae planet|algae mash]] as she thinks Nicky is allergic. Frustrated by Cally's avoidance of the subject, he slams his fist down on the table, upsetting his son, and tries to comfort him.
*On ''Colonial One'', Lee Adama is in a conference room for the Quorum meeting. Spotting the nameplate for Caprica, he tentatively sits down. Tom Zarek arrives, his mood dark. When Adama tells Zarek that he wanted to see Roslin to discuss some projects that [[Cowen]], his predecessor as Caprican delegate, had before she died, Zarek counters, explaining that, like himself, Roslin is keeping Adama on the sidelines. Zarek believes that Roslin does not forgive and forget easily. When Adama asks Zarek why he nominated him for the Quorum's side, Zarek tells him that it was because Adama stood up to defend Baltar and confront Roslin, he believed Adama would make an effective ally.
*Zarek feels that Roslin's increasingly secretive nature, by refusing to allow meetings to be recorded, is a sign of a larger issue, despite claiming to Adama that he remains loyal to Roslin. When Adama tells Zarek that he won't be giving a repeat of his work in Baltar's trial to undermine Roslin, saying that having a "benevolent tyrant" is better than the opposite, Zarek strongly disagrees. He asks Adama to trust him to aid in his fight to uncover the secrets that Roslin hides. He leaves a classified folder with Adama and leaves.
*In sickbay, Cally Tyrol asks for another sedative and for sleep, but Cottle objects, not wanting to turn his sickbay in an "opium den." He asks about her family life, which Cally tells all is not well since reaching the [[Ionian Nebula]].
*Cottle does side with Cally about her husband's problems, asking her to bring him in for examination. Cally smiles at Cottle's "tough love" stance but Cottle warns that she might actually be imagining things as her fatigue and drug use could be influencing her thoughts. Cally counters that she might, indeed be crazy, considering she married a man who [[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I|once broke her jaw]]. When Cottle asks if that was the last time that Galen had attacked Cally, she responds that she'd wished that he'd do so again (taking Cottle's cigarette from his hand and taking a drag), if only for her to gauge what Galen really felt about her. Cottle tells her to get some rest.
*On ''Colonial One'', the Quorum meeting continues. [[Sagittaron]] Quorum delegate [[Jacob Cantrell]] strongly questions Roslin about the ''Demetrius'' mission, which she defers to answer out of matters of security. Others are visibly upset with Roslin's answer and of each other when Roslin tries to steer the meeting back to other matters of the floor while Zarek, acting as the chair of the meeting, tries to establish order.
*Lee Adama speaks out, trying to calm the others through inferring, based on his own military experience, that the president and Admiral Adama are exploring all possible routes to Earth. The Quorum audibly relaxes at Adama's words, but Roslin sees Adama as trying to be her "spokesperson" and chastises him. She directs Cantrell to continue with his discussion on medical supplies.
* Lee Adama calls a point of order, which Zarek uses to compels Contrell to yield the floor for Adama to speak. Adama brings up Executive Order 112, which would concentrate more executive power. The Quorum angrily erupts when Roslin tries to bury the issue.
*On ''Galactica'', Cally Tyrol sadly recalls her good times with her husband. She kisses her son and goes to close a door when she sees a note stuck in the door that tells her to meet at Weapons Locker 1701D.
* When Cally arrives, she finds her husband, [[Saul Tigh]] and Tory Foster entering. She opens a maintenance panel, tiny and dangerous, and enters to listen in on the conversation.
*What Cally hears shocks her more than the suggestion that her husband is having an affair. Tigh had left the note to meet at the weapons locker for Galen, and suddenly realizes that Cally could have intercepted the note. Tigh warns of the complications if Cally discovered that her husband was a Cylon.
* Cally's shock knocks a metal plate, which tumbles noisily down the ship's interior, a series of pipes and conduits that run dangerously deep from where Cally is standing. The others in the room halt their discussion for a moment before leaving. Cally escapes the tunnel and runs back to her quarters, but Foster leaves and notices that the maintenance panel was ajar.
* Cally is back in her quarters, visibly upset, when her husband returns.
* He tries to apologize, tell Cally that the affair never happened, and that his commitment to his family is paramount. But Cally believes that Galen used her to have a hybrid child and strikes him with a wrench, knocking him unconscious. She takes her son and leaves but not before taking a key from Galen's pocket.
* Walking through the corridors to the [[hangar deck]], Cally (still holding Nicky) enters a [[launch tube]]. She looks at the stars through a window, then opens a maintenance door. Inserting the key she took from Galen, Cally activates the launch tube airlock. Tory Foster arrives, and approaches Cally and Nicky.
* Cally closes the launch tube airlock door, sealing them inside. Foster tries to reason with Cally, asking her to think about what she's about to do to herself and to her child. Foster explains that they only recently found out they were Cylons, and that they are still the same people, and that they are as scared and confused as everyone else. Cally breaks down and collapses on her knees, apologizing to Nicky for what she was about to do to him. Foster comforts Cally and takes Nicky in her arms, then suddenly strikes Cally with surprising strength, knocking her to the deck and putting her in a daze.
* Foster retrieves the launch tube key and exits the launch tube, Nicky in her arms. When Cally comes to, she finds herself alone trapped in the airlock, and Tory inside the launch control booth. Tory uses the key to activate the launch controls and opens the outer airlock door, sending Cally to her death in open space.
* Admiral Adama breaks the news of Cally's death to a motionless, silent Tyrol.

=== On the ''[[Demetrius]]'' ===
* On day 22 of the mission, ''Demetrius'' continues on its mission to find [[Earth (RDM)|Earth]], with as many as four [[Viper Mark II]] fighters magnetically locked onto its top hull.
* Inside, Kara Thrace appears frustrated as she pores through star charts and other navigation data, trying to gain her fix on the direction of Earth. [[Felix Gaeta]] enters the room as Thrace tells him of a decision.
* In a mess hall on the dark, dirty ship, [[Diana Seelix]] asks in frustration what they are looking for in deep space. A pilot named [[Eammon Pike|Pike]], looking at the centerfold of ''[[Nymph]]'' magazine, explains that they are searching for a gas giant with rings orbiting a trinary star cluster with a comet. Seelix angrily retorts that the search is more like a "[[frak|cluster-frak]]" to her when [[Helo]] admonishes her.
* [[Sharon Agathon]] and [[Samuel Anders]] are also in the room.
* Some of the group complains that Thrace's repeated course corrections are pointless. When Pike says that he thinks ''Galactica'' is hounding them in secret, waiting for Thrace to show her "true colors" as a Cylon, Anders defends her. When the mood darkens more, Helo orders everyone to be quiet.
*Thrace is quietly approaching, listening to the conversation from above the mess hall deck, and soon yells for Helo to talk to him. Anders looks above him to Thrace (standing on steel mesh decking) and asks if there is more that she can tell them about their destination, but Thrace coldly admonishes him by rank for asking. Thrace gives Helo new [[FTL]] coordinates.
*Anders meets with Thrace, as she paints what she has seen on a bulkhead. Anders complains that she needs to open up more about the mission with the rest of the crew, but Thrace disagrees. Reminding her that some of them volunteered for the mission, Thrace steers Anders's concerns to that of their failed marriage. Anders joins their marital arm tattoos., trying to remind her of what is real. Thrace angrily tells Anders that she married him only because he was a safe choice and he was naive enough to do so.
*The two exchange more words. Thrace explains to Anders that she's not the same woman he married. He pushes her into a bunk as their anger dissolves into sex.
*After sex, Thrace questions that she and Anders's marriage was real. She questions how her feelings, her perceptions of her past, as if she were watching it from another "alien" body far away. Ander's face suggests comprehension about [[Final Five|feeling unsure of identity]].

=== On the [[Basestar (RDM)|basestar]]s ===
* On a [[Resurrection Ship]], a [[Number One]] is [[Resurrection (RDM)|resurrected]]. Another One tells his confused brother that he was shot by one of their own [[Cylon Centurion]]s. [[Sharon Valerii|Boomer]] is there with him.
* The first Number One wants to return to his baseship, but the second One tells him that he has been effectively kicked off from his own ship in a type of coup. Boomer apologizes that her swing vote to enforce the [[Cylon Raider (RDM)|Raider]] "reconfiguration" failed, and kisses him deeply.
*On the same baseship where the Centurions shot several [[humanoid Cylon]]s for their part in the Raider reconfiguration, a Number One returns to the conference room where a Centurion is busily cleaning up the mess caused by their shootout.
*The Number One tries to understand why [[Natalie]] shifted power, suggesting to reunify the group. Natalie explains that the Raiders were only a symptom of a larger problem: Cavil's [[Rapture|earlier pressure]] on the group to [[box]] all [[Number Three]]s. Natalie says that mere unification of the [[Significant Seven|seven]] is not enough. She and the Eights at the table tell Number One that unification with the [[Final Five]] is the desired goal. Natalie wants all the Threes unboxed and work on unifying with the Five to begin.
*Cavil dislikes the idea of resuming the D'Anna's "messianic quest" that seemed to lead the remaining Cylons to this juncture, but agrees to bring Natalie's case to the other models. Natalie orders a Centurion to escort Cavil off the ship, but it hesitates until she says, "please." Cavil warns her that removing the [[inhibitor]]s from the Centurions has caused a bigger problem than Natalie realizes.
*Later, two Number Ones tell Natalie and two Number Eights the result of the vote: The consensus is to unbox the Threes, although Cavil/One remains against the idea.
*An Eight tries to solicit the Ones' support since his side was outvoted, but Natalie agrees with the Ones that the vote does not give Natalie's side the right to change the feelings of the Ones and create more discord.
* Cavil/One tells Natalie that the Threes' consciousness is being downloaded in a central resurrection hub six jumps away. Still harboring bad feelings about the decision, the two sides agree to stay on different baseships as they make their way back to hear of the Threes' discovery on the [[algae planet]].
* Cylon baseships controlled by Cavil join the rest of the fleet at their destination, but without the [[Resurrection Ship]]. The newly-arrived baseships break formation and surround Natalie's baseships, then launch an attack.
* On Cavil's baseship, Boomer worries that murder, permanent killing of their own kind without chance of resurrection is wrong. Cavil says coldly that God will watch over the dying Cylons' immortal souls. When Boomer questions who will watch over their souls, Cavil says, "We're machines, dear. We don't have souls."

== Notes ==

* This episode sees no net loss of life in the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]], with the exception of [[Cally Tyrol]]'s death later in this episode, reducing the overall survivor count to 39,675.
* The number and alphabetical designation of the weapons locker, 1701D, is a ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: The Next Generation|Star Trek: The Next Generation]]'' reference. 1701-D is the registry number for the ''[[MemoryAlpha:USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)|USS Enterprise]]'' from that series, which [[Ronald D. Moore]] formerly worked on. Michael Taylor did write for the ''Star Trek'' franchise alongside Moore on ''[[MemoryAlpha:Star Trek: Deep Space Nine|Deep Space Nine]]''.
*Like "[[He That Believeth In Me]]" and "[[Valley of Darkness]]", this episode's title is derived from Christian traditions; [[w:Blessed Be the Tie that Binds|Blessed Be the Tie that Binds]] is a Protestant hymn celebrating the unity that comes from love.
* Prior to the episode airing, [[Michael Taylor]] stated: "we say goodbye to another longtime character, though who that is and the manner of his or her departure should come as a surprise."<ref name="thewatcher">{{cite_web|url=http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2007/11/answers-to-your.html|title=Answers to your 'Razor' questions and clues about 'Battlestar Galactica's' final season|date=16 November 2007|accessdate=16 November 2007|last=Ryan|first=Maureen}} </ref>
* The script was being written while "[[Razor]]" was still in pre-production.<ref name="thewatcher"/>
* For the first time since the second season, the journalist [[Sekou Hamilton]] makes an appearance.
* The Fleet still subsists on the food collected on the [[algae planet]], as evidenced by Cally Tyrol's suspicion that her son may be allergic to it.

== Analysis ==
[[Image:Orion belt.jpg|250px|thumb|right|Orion's belt. [[:Image:Orion belt highlighted.jpg|View Highlighted Version]].]]
* The constellation [[w:Orion (constellation)|Orion]] appears in this episode. It is clearly visible in the background of the basestars shortly before Cavil's ships begin to attack, and may be visible when Cally looks out the window in the launch tube shortly before she is confronted by Foster. This would indicate that both fleets are relatively close to Earth. However, for them to see Orion in the same two-dimensional configuration as from Earth, they would have to be within a few light years of Sol and in a relatively narrow corridor between it an Orion.
* Given that, [[Astrometrics|astrographers]] should now notice that their observations and the rough map found on [[Kobol (RDM)|Kobol]] in the [[Tomb of Athena]] are beginning to match. On Kobol, the crew realized that that Earth is in a straight line from the Twelve Colonies to the [[w:Lagoon Nebula|Lagoon nebula]], and that the constellations they see appear like that when viewed from Earth.
* The ringed gas giant [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] claims to have seen is shown in this episode, bearing a striking resemblance to [[w:Jupiter|Jupiter]].
* The force with which Tory hits Cally indicates that the Final Five possess the Cylons' superhuman strength and if they possess this trait it is likely that the have other, physical Cylon traits as well.
* Foster also seems to be calmer, cooler, and more calculating than in the recent past. She appears to be more accepting of her Cylon nature than the others.
* Once again no one notices the use of a [[Launch tube (RDM)|launch tube]]. It is hard to believe that such a critical system is not monitored, especially at night when the hangar deck is deserted.
* The absence of [[Sarah Porter]], [[Marshall Bagot]], [[Robin Wenutu]], and others from the first post-[[Fall of the Twelve Colonies|Fall]] [[Quorum of Twelve (RDM)|Quorum]] can be attributed to the destruction of ''[[Cloud 9]]'' by [[Gina Inviere]] in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]" or events leading up to the [[Second Exodus]]. After the Second Exodus, the current Quorum is sworn in by then-President [[Tom Zarek]] in "[[Collaborators]]", before said Quorum can ratify Roslin as his vice president and perform the presidential switch-a-roo that gives Roslin the presidency.
* Cavil and Boomer apparently have some sort of relationship. This was hinted at in the previous episode, when she dances lightly attired in front of him, but unclear.
* Although in public [[Laura Roslin]] claims to have forgiven [[Lee Adama]], and even to admire his convictions, she apparently still holds a grudge for how he treated her during Baltar's trial. She refuses to see him to discuss political issues, and later snubs him in a Quorum session where she ribs on his inexperience.
* When learning that her husband is a Cylon, Cally remembers seeing him cutting his finger and licking off the blood. Tyrol may have done this to convince himself that he is human. The drop of blood hitting the floor is the same image used as a framing device in "[[Resistance (episode)|Resistance]]" to signify the connection between Tyrol and Boomer.
* The episode shows a lot about the Quorum of Twelve and about the state of fleet politics in general. The Quorum meeting is reminiscent in format of [[w:Question Time|Question Time]], a tradition of many parliamentary systems including that of the United Kingdom and Canada.
**The rowdiness and backtalk of the Quorum in particular is reminiscent of Prime Minister's Questions. However, unlike in Prime Minister's Questions or similar Question Time periods in real life parliaments, President Roslin makes some attempt at directing the meeting, rather than adopting the defensive posture the British Prime Minister is placed into. This suggests either a stronger constitutional role for the president or a further consolidation of power by Roslin.
** The Quorum is also, at least at this point, a non-partisan body. While parliaments and legislatures in real life are divided along party lines, there is no sign of this here. In particular, while government backbenchers usually ask flattering questions in contrast to the more challenging questions posed by the opposition, Adama is openly chastised by Roslin for attempting to ask an easy question.
*Cally plans to blow herself and Nicky into space, something that she experienced but survived in "[[A Day in the Life]]". This may indicate that she believes, on the basis of her earlier experience, that it would be relatively quick and painless for both of them. It seems unlikely that she would choose what she felt would be a particularly unpleasant death, especially for her son.

== Questions ==

* Are all of the "renegade" Cylon faction baseships destroyed? Does Natalie escape?
* Will the renegade models be boxed?
* Now that power has shifted to the more aggressive models, will the Cylon renew their attacks on the humans, or will the stress and distraction of the Cylon civil war protect the human fleet for the time being?
* Does the vague warning given by Cavil to Natalie about removing the inhibitors hint towards a Centurion rebellion against the humanoid Cylons?
* Will Boomer abandon Cavil's side now that he has resorted to lethal measures against Natalie's faction?
* Is the execution of the Sixes, Eights, and Twos limited to the Cylon fleet or does it stretch also to the Cylon homeworld?
* Has [[Hera Agathon|Hera]] been left in foster care by her parents? If so, who have they found to look after her?
* What is Foster's motivation for killing Cally Tyrol?
* What will Tyrol do should he discover that it was Foster who ejected Cally into space?
* Will Cally's death be declared as another execution that went unnoticed, such as those performed by the [[Circle]]?
* Are Foster's actions indicating a gradual shifting of her allegiance from the humans to the Cylons?
== Noteworthy Dialogue ==

*''[[William Adama]] reads the opening of ''[[Love and Bullets]]'':''
:"It started like it always did. With a body. This one was in the river, and I could tell she had once been beautiful, but this bullet and fast current had taken away from her. All we are, or that we think we are, all that we are certain about, is taken away from us. When you've worked the streets and seen what I've seen, you become more and more convinced of it every day. [[Caprica City]] has been my teacher, my mistress. From the moment I opened my eyes, she is in my blood, like cheap wine. Bitter and sweet, tinged with regret. I'll never be free of her, nor do I wanna be, for she is what I am. All that is, should always be."

*''[[Tom Zarek]] and [[Lee Adama]] about [[Laura Roslin|Roslin]]'s leadership:''
:'''Adama:''' Well, sometimes a benevolent tyrant is exactly what you need.
:'''Zarek:''' No. A tyrant craves power for its own sake. And all Laura wants is to save us all.

*''[[Samuel Anders]] confronts [[Kara Thrace]]:''
:'''Anders:''' You know, some of us actually volunteered for this mission.
:'''Thrace:''' "Some" meaning you. Because that's what this is about, Sam. You know what the deal is, with us, with our marriage? It didn't make much sense to begin with. Makes even less now.
:'''Anders:''' I don't buy that. I don't think you believe a single, frakking word you're saying. You're just scared. You see that, mhh? You see [[Arts and Literature of the Twelve Colonies#Kara Thrace .26 Samuel Anders|this]]? Remember those? You remember when we got 'em? That's what's real, ok. That's part of who we are. That is a part of what ''you'' are, whether you will admit it or not.
:'''Thrace:''' Dumb motherfrakker. I only married you because it was safe and it was easy, Sam. And you were just pathetic enough to go along with it. So get the frak out! (She shoves him out) Sam, get out! Get out! Leave, come on! Get out! (Anders takes her by the arms and holds her. They are almost kissing.) I don't want to fight, Sam. I wanna frak. You don't get it, do you? I'm not the same girl you married. All I wanna do right now is frak. Really frak, like it's the end of the world and nothing else matters. So come on, Sam, make me feel something. I dare you.
:(Anders shoves her away, then gives her a second shove onto the bunk bed.)

== Summary ==

== Questions ==
* Is Lampkin's statement to Roslin and Adama that he is seeking the fame (or infamy) of being Baltar's lawyer true, or is there an ulterior motive?

* Will Captain Kelly be punished and if yes, how?

* Besides the attacks caused by Kelly, have there been any other incidents of violence on the scale that Zarek warned Roslin about?

* Will the death of Thrace bring Lee Adama and Sam Anders closer as friends in future episodes?

* Would the bomb on the Raptor have gone off if Tyrol hadn't discovered it? Is Kelly telling the truth that he would not have triggered it with Lee Adama inside?

* Is Cally's hatred of the Cylons truly towards all Cylons or is she afraid of Athena because of her connection to Tyrol's former lover, Boomer?

* Why does Lampkin wear sunglasses in most of his encounters with people? What was the significance of him taking the sunglasses off when he was "telling" Caprica-Six what Baltar wanted to tell her?

* What caused the rift between William Adama and his own father?

== Analysis ==
* A noticeable pattern between the two Adamas can be seen whenever both are going through a stressful or traumatic situation. Whereas the elder Adama has the experience and the desire to focus on the job that he has to do, the younger Adama consistently displays an inability to cope and process his emotions. This difference between the two has often led to sharp divisions, causing another tear in their damaged relationship:
** When the two Adamas do not agree on the same method of coping with the destruction of the ''Olympic Carrier'' in "[[33]]". This eventually leads to Lee Adama becoming Roslin's military adviser and eventual co-conspirator during the hunt of Arrow of Apollo.
** During the planning for the [[Battle of New Caprica]], the two Adamas bunt heads again over strategy and whether it is worth the risk of losing the last remnants of humanity that was with ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'' at the time.

* Lee Adama has consistently shown a tendency to prove that he is not like his father, even though both are described as stubborn by Dualla and [[Carolanne Adama]]. This tendency is evident in the last argument between the two when Apollo accuses Adama of not wanting him to become like his grandfather.

* William Adama's failure to listen to Carolanne Adama's plead and advise to tell his son how proud he is of him comes back with a vengeance when Apollo repeatedly asks his father if he is giving him an order. The implication being Apollo wanted to know if his father is treating him as a son or as a soldier. Adama's refusal to ask Apollo to obey his orders as his son will probably lead to further dissension between the two.

* Lampkin, though appears to be lawyer with little courtroom experience, has demonstrated a deep understanding of the human psyche. He takes Roslin's glasses to prevent her from being taken seriously during the trial. His other feats such as raising doubt and bringing out Caprica-Six's feelings for Baltar, and his slow but sure persuasion of Lee Adama into helping with Baltar's case, give hints to a man who obviously has immense experience with the art of manipulation.

* Lee Adama honors Thrace's request of having her photo posted next to Kat's. His inability to let go of the photo may represent a possible marriage conflict with Dualla if he is unable to truly move on.

* Cally Tyrol correctly states that the Cylons wouldn't need to even fire one shot because they may find the Fleet had torn itself apart because of humanity's tendency towards self-destruction. However, it is also clear that she has not realized that she and the many workers are just as much apart of the problems when they essentially risked the existence of the Fleet with their work strikes, the refusal of refining tylium , and disobedience toward military orders ([[Dirty Hands]]).

* When Lee Adama mistakenly thinks and calls [[Racetrack]] Starbuck, his mental state is reminiscent of "[[Black Market]]" when he constantly found himself recollecting on events on Caprica before the genocide.

* Two weeks had passed since the events of "[[Maelstrom]]". During this time, Adama apparently has been recollecting over his memories of Starbuck, including a review of her military record. Amongst the items in the folder, the audience sees a hand made birthday card which Thrace gave Adama for his birthday once. It jokingly shows Thrace with a color pen mustache and asks if Adama can see the resemblance. This moment re-enforces the theme that Starbuck was very much of a daughter to Adama, even though he stated otherwise in "[[Torn]]". It is very clear that he still saw Thrace as a daughter to him.

== Notes ==
*This episode's title is a pun on the title of the 1926 Hemingway novel [[w:The Sun Also Rises|The Sun Also Rises]].
*The model ship which Adama destroyed in [[Maelstrom|the previous episode]] is still sitting on a shelf in his quarters.
*[[Romo Lampkin]] exhibits symptoms of [[w:Kleptomania|Kleptomania]]. Over the course of the episode he steals many objects of little or no value including President Roslin's glasses and Baltar's fountain pen.

== Overview ==
:''[[William Adama|Adama]] faces the memory of his late wife and their marriage as he marks his wedding anniversary. Meanwhile Cally and Galen Tyrol are trapped in a depressurizing airlock with no way to leave it, and President Roslin is pushing ahead with Baltar's trial.

== Summary ==
===Teaser===
*[[Galen Tyrol]], looking haggard, is carrying a baby bottle to his small, but private accommodations for his wife, [[Cally Tyrol]] and their infant son, [[Nicholas Tyrol]].
*The Tyrols are beginning their day. While Cally was expecting a day off, Galen tells her of needed maintenance on an [[airlock]] that cannot wait. Cally is frustrated by Galen's insistance that she assist him instead of enlisting others from the deck crew.
*Admiral [[William Adama]] dreams of his late wife, [[Carolanne Adama]], at a home on [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)#Caprica|Caprica]]. When his quarter's intercom awakens him, Adama's grogginess shows him rising from his bunk, and Carolanne's image appears, asleep, in the bunk as well.
*Colonel [[Saul Tigh]] enters with papers to sign for needed maintenance on the ship. The XO notices the empty bunk and is quite aware that today is Adama's wedding anniversary with his wife.
*Private [[Stewart Jaffee|Jaffee]] arrives to drop off the admiral's coffee, and Adama, deep in thought with memories of his ex-wife, is unable to remember the crewman's name.
*Chief Tyrol arrives in a crew head to talk through the work schedules with his deck crew. He tells [[Seelix]] to join the Tyrols at airlock 12, an airlock located on the port aft side of ''[[Galactica|Galactica's]]'' "alligator head".
*The Tyrols enter the airlock; equipment and pallets are strewn about, and the observation deck has been unused for over a year. A previous [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon attack]] had left this airlock unusable, and minor hull breeches here had been temporarily patched and left for a later repair.
*The Tyrols were to fix the gearing systems of the airlock's doors. As Cally tries to get Galen to discuss their marital problems, specifically Galen's desire to handle workloads as usual despite their marriage, a klaxon activates and the inner airlock doors quickly close. Seelix is confused; she didn't initiate the airlock close. She notifies the Chief of a pressure differential in the compartment; a leak has developed.
*Galen Tyrol, despite Cally's surprise, isn't fazed; he knows that the airlock closure is an automatic safety mechanism. He instructs his wife to search for the leak, knowing that the doors will open once the leak is again patched.

===Act 1===
*Adama envisions himself at his home on Caprica as Carolanne's image asks him if he is going to continue repeating events to exercise his memory.
*Carolanne's image accuses him of using his position to exalt himself and President [[Laura Roslin]].
*Roslin and Adama meet for a quick briefing. She admits that it could have been over [[wireless]] but she had to get off of [[Colonial One|her ship]]. Adama explains her mood as being "O.B.E." - overcome by events.
*Roslin suggests that [[Lee Adama]] lead the process in organizing the necessary resources for [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar's]] trial, noting Lee's [[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II|past with just causes]] against the ''status quo'' as well as the Adama family history in [[Joseph Adama|law]]. Admiral Adama agrees to ask Lee about the matter.
*Roslin asks to stay aboard ''[[Galactica]]'' and tells Adama that she is going to the gym. Adama smiles and mentions something about the smell, to which Roslin laughs heartily.
*Pilots conduct their [[CAP]] briefing in their [[Pilot ready rooms|ready room]], chatting between themselves with some satisfaction that the Cylons haven't been seen for 49 days.
*[[Helo]] greets [[Hot Dog]], who complains about a strange rash as he scratches near his genitals. Helo smiles and, implying the questionable worthiness of a probable illicit (and inadvisable) sexual union by Hot Dog, moves a seat away from the scratching pilot. As Major [[Lee Adama]] steps up to begin his briefing, one [[Tattooed pilot|last pilot]] takes the seat next to Helo.
*Major Adama begins his pilot briefing, berating the pilots' celebration. He tells the pilots that the number "1" is all they need to remember, reminding them that it takes only 1 slip-up to begin a major disaster for the Fleet. Admiral Adama is outside of the ready room, and stands quietly and out of eyesight to anyone as he listens, with a faint level of pride appearing on his face, to his son's stern lecture.
*Carolanne's image reminds Adama to remind his son that he loves him, and not through veiled promotions and commendations.
*[[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] sticks around for a few seconds after the pilots are dismissed to tease Major Adama about mimicking his father's ultimatum command style. The younger Adama replies that if he has to copy, it should be from the best. Admiral Adama enters the room as Starbuck leaves for her duties.
*Admiral Adama asks his son to head the legal organization processes for Baltar's trial. Major Adama is flattered and will consider the idea. He tells his father that, as a child looking through his grandfather's office and the various books strewn about, he considered a profession as a lawyer amongst his many other career considerations, something that his father never knew. The major notes that his [[CAG]] duties are 24/7 as it is, even with the Cylon down time.
*The Tyrols' patching of the breach appears to work initially, but when the pressure test is done, the new patches fail. The leak worsens greatly.

===Act 2===
*Admiral Adama has been alerted about the worsening airlock emergency with the Tyrols in airlock 12 and makes his way there with Colonel Tigh and their [[marines|marine]] escort in tow. He assesses the damage personally and later consults with his command staff in [[CIC]]. There is approximately 30 minutes of air in the lock, and the temperature is dropping considerably as frost begins to form inside the airlock.
*Major Adama notes extensive damage in the airlock that has damaged the redundancies that could manually open the door, leaving no way to open it. Tigh suggests blowing the glass in the airlock's observation deck, but Major Adama warns that the reinforced glass is designed to handle a [[tylium]] explosion, and that a detonation sufficient to blow the glass would kill the Tyrols as well. Admiral Adama is angered by the lack of options and demands more thought.
*The pilots prep for an extraordinary rescue attempt; to blow the external door, where the Tyrols, exposed to vacuum, will have to leap into [[Sharon Agathon|Athena's]] [[Raptor]]. Admiral Adama briefs the Tyrols on the plan shortly after the two don emergency breathing gear.
*After retrieving the Tyrols, it will take seven seconds to close the Raptor's external door and another 10 seconds to re-pressurize the rescue vessel.
*Cally is visibly upset after hearing the plan. The Chief asks if a docking collar will be used, to which Adama states in the negative; there is not enough time. The Tyrols try to prep the area so that the evacuation of the airlock will not pummel them or their rescue ship with flying pallets or other equipment.
*Cally Tyrol worries who will take care of their [[Nicholas Tyrol|son]] if things go wrong. Galen suggests that [[Anastasia Dualla]] and her husband would be suitable foster parents, but Cally knows of a reputation throughout the [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] of how orphaned children fare there. Fearing that pilots (with their hazardous life) would leave Nicky orphaned a second time, she asks Admiral Adama to give their son to [[Susan Deckler]], a civilian mother with one daughter.

===Act 3===
*The Raptor is in position, with Athena as pilot and Apollo and [[Kara Thrace|Starbuck]] inside, ready to catch the two. Apollo warns everyone of shrapnel and other turbulence that will affect the mission.
*Galen Tyrol apologizes to his wife for being selfish in asking her to join him in the repair. The order was his way of wanting to have her companionship. He instructs her to hold tight as they prepare to leave the airlock.
*Admiral Adama orders the door blown. The Tyrols are flung from the airlock and the Raptor manages to fend off debris from the door, catch the entwined Tyrols, then re-pressurize. Apollo notes the Tyrols were in rough shape but alive.
*Later, Admiral and Major Adama talk about Carolanne, who haunts the elder Adama's memory, accusing him of never being there, able to lead men but not his own family.
*Lee Adama tells his father that, after their divorce, Carolanne made many promises that she didn't keep, particularly once she took to drinking. Over time, she wouldn't apologize for her neglect in fulfilling the promises. The young Adama believes that, despite his love of his mother, he did not believe that she truly loved his father.

===Act 4===
*Seelix arrives in [[sickbay]] with baby Tyrol in her arms after retrieving him from day care. Galen Tyrol is in a bunk, resting, but exerts himself to stand and hold his son. He tells Seelix that Cally will be fine, although Dr. [[Cottle]] notes it will be some time before she is up to full strength. He slowly walks to Cally, who is recuperating inside a hyperbaric chamber to treat the effects of vacuum exposure.
*Cally Tyrol awakens to glimpse at her family. Her eyes show distress from the vacuum and she is too weak to smile, but holds her hand to the interior window. Galen presses his son's hand to the glass; Admiral Adama is nearby and has watched the entire event.
*Major Adama returns to his quarters to find his wife resting. She points to a box that his father had shipped to his quarters; the young Adama facetiously asks if the box is ticking. On inspecting it, he finds a library of Caprican criminal law books, the same ones he looked at from his grandfather's collection. The admiral leaves a note for his son.
*Admiral Adama completes yet another meeting with Laura Roslin. Adama steers the conversation back to New Caprica, specifically, their time together during then-President Baltar's [[Unfinished Business|groundbreaking ceremony and party]]. Roslin admits to [[New Caprican loco weed|feeling a little silly]] that evening.
*Adama fondly recalls her red dress and the good feelings each had that day. When Roslin laughs, Adama tells her how happy it is to see her do so. He asks her, if the Cylons hadn't attacked, if she would have built that cabin in the woods that she wanted.
*Roslin temporarily evades the question by answering that Baltar's inept leadership and New Caprica's terrain would have prevented such a building, but is pleased by Adama's attention. She asks if he would have stayed on ''Galactica'' or eventually settled himself, to which Adama evades an answer by stating that their questions were all hypothetical in any case.
*Adama, with a smile, states that the two of them have specific duties, apparently attempting to return a professional distance to what was becoming a very intimate conversation. Roslin replies, with another smile, to the affirmative.
*As she begins to leave, she tells Adama that, in a few days, she'll return to the battlestar, where they can return to their conversation and reminisce of their brief time on New Caprica and its possibilities. As she steps away, she tells Adama that she would have definitely built her cabin if time and circumstance would have allowed.
*Adama returns to his quarters, holding his wedding picture. He returns it to its storage until next year.

===Bonus Scene===
*The complete bonus scene (which was available on the [http://www.scifi.com Sci Fi Channel web site for U.S. viewers after the episode]) takes place just before Colonel Tigh visits Admiral Adama's quarters at the start of the episode.
*Lieutenants [[Felix Gaeta]] and Anastasia Dualla walk towards Adama's quarters for signatures of maintenance orders as part of their daily briefing. As he makes some notes on the orders, Gaeta volunteers the observation that President Roslin and Adama have had many meetings together recently.
*When Dualla asks what he's implying, Gaeta suggests that there might be something more intimate going on between the senior Fleet leadership. Dualla grimaces at the possibility, replying that the idea of Roslin and Adama together in her head was not a particularly desirable one to imagine.
*When the two think deeply and briefly of the two commanders together, both begin to laugh, and continue to do so when Colonel Tigh intercepts them and asks what was so funny.
*The two formally note their briefing, but Tigh takes the folder to deliver himself and dismisses the two back to CIC. Dualla and Gaeta's composure fails as they turn to CIC and begin laughing uncontrollably as Tigh heads to his friend's quarters, which connects to the original scene of his arrival.

== Questions ==
* Since it is not connected to the larger port [[flight pod]] and its [[hangar deck]], what would airlock 12 normally be used for?
* Was Carolanne Adama's only wife? Was she the same wife whose father had the connections that allowed Adama to be re-enlisted into the fleet?
* Will the potential romance between Roslin and Adama be consummated or left as a "what could have been" scenario?
* How many different type of court and law codes are there within the Colonies? Is there not a unified "Federal" equivalent set of laws that could be used for Baltar's trial?
* Will Lee take on the position offered by Roslin?
* Is Helo no longer in charge of taking care of living arrangements for "Dogville"?
* Will ''Galactica'' ever be able to fight up to the capacity as she did during the [[Battle of New Caprica]]?

== Analysis ==

* The argument referenced in "[[Taking a Break From All Your Worries]]" between the Tyrols focuses on how Chief [[Galen Tyrol|Tyrol]] acts as is nothing has changed since marrying [[Cally Tyrol|Cally]], particularly as he ignores his family's needs over the needs of his job. Cally, on the other hand, is concerned about [[Nicholas Tyrol|Nicky]], and has apparently gone to great lengths to think about his future, notably when Cally asks Admiral [[William Adama|Adama]] to give Nicky to a civilian family whom she knows.
* There was much patchwork done to ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' after the [[Battle of New Caprica]]. Colonel [[Saul Tigh|Tigh]] notes that ''Galactica'' would need six weeks in dry dock "just for the dents", making it sound likely that ''Galactica'' would not survive another battle like New Caprica.
* The cinematic flashbacks or imaginary melding of Adama's memories of Carolanne, including recollections or imaginings of sitting with her and touching her, and what he believed she would say in the various situations of the day were curiously similar to how [[Gaius Baltar]] imagines his [[Cylon-Related Hallucinations|virtual Number Six]]. However, Adama's likelihood of being a [[Humanoid Cylon speculation|Cylon]] are practically refuted by the existence of his memories (as well as two characters, Lee Adama and Saul Tigh, who also share in the same memories).
* Through his internal conversations / arguments with Carolanne, it appears Adama has regrets with his decision to marry her. The regret has become a nagging question and buffer on his ability to make decisions and to not question them.

== Notes ==
* "A Day in the Life" is also [[w:A Day in the Life|the title of a song]] by [[w:The Beatles|The Beatles]]. It is not known whether this has any particular meaning to the episode.

* There are two births that occurred between "[[The Woman King]]" and "A Day in the Life", as the population count after "The Woman King" was 41,396.

* A day care center exists on ''Galactica''.

* [[Number Six]] ([[Tricia Helfer]]) and [[Gaius Baltar]] ([[James Callis]]) do not appear in any scene in this episode.

* The set used for the airlock - in particular the observation booth - is the same as for the [[Launch tube (RDM)|launch tubes]].

* In reality, humans have been exposed to near-vacuum conditions for up to thirty seconds without permanent injury. Some sources state that survival is possible for up to two minutes, but the injury the body sustains becomes severe after approximately one minute of exposure. The biggest danger is damage to the lungs, as the sudden pressure differential can burst the avioli. That is why a person should exhale and not hold their breath.

* When Apollo uses his watch to time the hatch on Athena's Raptor, it makes a beep in the manner of a digital stopwatch. However, the watch in question, inherited from [[Barry Garner]] in "[[The Captain's Hand]]", is an analog device.
I recall watching TOS when was very young (5-8) because I was a big Star Wars and SciFi fan.
==Programming Note==
As many in the United States know, the [http://www.superbowl.com/ Super Bowl] American Football championship game is February 4. For most in our country, that game is a holiday-like event with as much national pride and rivalries as the international World Cup championship games. Since any TV programming that plays alongside the Super Bowl won't get many viewers, it appears that the SciFi Channel chose to pre-empt ''Battlestar'' to the following week. Just to let you know before you search for a torrent of the next episode.

I, for one, will certainly be watching, as I'm a resident of Indinaapolis, home of the Colts and one of the teams in the game. :) --[[User:Spencerian|Spencerian]] 12:48, 30 January 2007 (CST)
OK, OK, OK, OK! == Concurrent with "Taking a Break?" ==

Is there any information or thought as to whether this episode takes place at the same time as the previous episode, "[[Taking a Break from All Your Worries]]?" It would make some sense, as this episode is rumored to involve Hera under the care of Dr. Robert, and Athena was in a rush to get a sick Hera to a doctor at the end of "[[Rapture]]." It would also explain where Helo and Sharon are during "Taking a Break," since they weren't featured there at all, with the seemingly urgent Hera storyline oddly dropped.

Of course, the idea of "[[Black Market]]" and "[[Scar]]" being concurrent came up as the second season aired, but that was disproved. This might just be a random idea. I guess we'll find out for sure in two weeks. --[[User:Linaf|Linaf]] 20:12, 29 January 2007 (CST)
:It might also explain why [[Robert|Doctor Robert]] is treating Hera instead of Cottle as he is busy with the interrogation drugs on Baltar. --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 11:31, 2 February 2007 (CST)
::Keep in mind though, that Cottle is not on Sharon's "A" list right about now either. Probably, since he played quite a big roll in faking Hera's death and hiding the baby away...Maybe Helo and Sharon wanted to seek...a second opinion. Unfortunatly, if that's the case looks like he won't be a good choice!--[[User:Gallion|Gallion]] 09:54, 6 February 2007 (CST)
:::Another issue with my theory is the Zarek scene we've seen in the promos. If it happens early in the episode, the two eps can't be concurrent because the decision to have the trial came at the end of "Taking a Break." However, if it's late in the ep, the two eps might happen at the same time. Only about 30 minutes until we find out. [[User:Linaf|Linaf]] 20:38, 11 February 2007 (CST)
== My Predictions ==

I've looked deep into my crystal ball this week, ''Galactica'' fans, and what I've seen will blow your minds and require a change of pants. I'll give you all a moment or two to go grab a spare pair of trousers. Got 'em? Okay, here we go:
*Helo beats the sweet bejeezus out of a frail old man who's just trying to help people through euthanasia.
*Athena, being a murderous Cylon deep inside, gets turned on by the violence. She and Helo conceive their second child.
*The trial of Gaius Baltar begins with thunderous applause.
*Tom Zarek!
*We see the first shots of the Cylon homeworld and learn how the Cylons are dealing with the loss of the Number Three model. Some models aren't taking it so well.
*We also learn why the Cylon fleets are spread so thin: Attacks from a mysterious external enemy have drawn the majority of the Cylons' attention for the last year and a half.
*Starbuck and Hot Dog take the Heavy Raider back to the Colonies to gather supplies. The Heavy Raider is able to make the trip in three jumps each way. When there, they're attacked by Cylon models they've never seen before and are brought to meet their leader: Galvatron!
*Dude. ''Tom'' motherfrakking ''ZAREK''.
*More guest appearances by the SuicideGirls. Quinne Suicide even has a line.
*Tigh whines about stuff and gets promoted. Gaeta whines about stuff and gets thrown in the brig. Apollo whines about stuff and gets promoted ''and'' thrown in the brig.
*Special guest appearances by Dr. Jack Kevorkian and Harlan Ellison.
*Did I mention Tom Zarek?
In the "Previously on Battlestar Galactica" segment, Helo was transferred to take care of the civvies who come on Galactica. What episode is that from? [[User:Moo|Moo]] 21:46, 11 February 2007 (CST)
:Just another "Previously Retcon." They do those from time to time, like in "Resurrection Ship, Part 1," where they "Previously-ed" a scene cut from "Pegasus." It's a way of setting up the story quick and easy, without the clunkery of exposition in the teaser. :Right. It might be an allegory for racism, but within the show it's definitely not racism. Your hesitation isn't necessary btw. It's not like this is a huge thing that will change an entire article --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 10:54, 12 February 2007 (CST)
::I am a little hesitant to make changes because I'm a new user and, until now, I've only corrected typos.
== Concurrent with "Taking a Break?" ==

[[Image:Seas3.jpg|thumb|350px|right|Battlestar Galactica Season 3]]
==Summary==

:''The stranded colonials struggle to survive under the brutal cylon rule of [[New Caprica]], but when [[Galactica (RDM)| Galactica]] returns to save humanity, the fledgling [[The Fleet (RDM)|Fleet]] resumes its search for [[Earth]]. The Cylons, after loosing control on New Caprica, depart on their own mysterious quest for Earth.''

== Story ==

====The Occupation====

Four months have passed since the events of "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]". On [[New Caprica]] a Cylon occupation, akin to [[Wikipedia:Vichy France|Vichy France]], is in full swing. The head of the colonial government, Gaius Baltar, reduced to the role of a puppet leader, colludes (albeit, unwillingly) with the Cylons.

The oppression rouses a [[The Resistance|resistance]], led by [[Colonel Tigh]], who task themselves with the objective of disrupting the Cylon occupation force. [[Laura Roslin]], though supportive of the resistance, focuses on concealing [[Hera]] from the Cylons.

During this time, [[Kara Thrace]] has been held in captivity by [[Leoben Conoy]], who subjects her to psychological and manipulative torure. He presents to her a [[Kacey|child]], claiming it to be her own; the result of the [[The Farm|removal]] of one of her ovaries inseminated with his sperm (or his cylon analogy of sperm). Kara eventually etablishes a motherly connection with the girl, and apparently accepts the child, Kacey, as her daughter.

Meanwhile, ''Galactica'' and ''Pegasus'', at a safe distance from New Caprica, are preparing to enact plans to rescue the colonists. Admiral Adama, frustrated with the situation, attempts to spur himself and his crew to action. He orders his son, Lee Adama, commander of ''Pegasus'', to stay behind with the rest of the civilian fleet; now a mere 2000 people. ''Galactica'' will attempt the rescue and in case of failure, ''Pegasus'' will continue the search for Earth with the remnants of the Fleet.

On New Caprica, the humans continue to be subjected to horrific conditions and many must endure torture, notably Colonel Tigh. A [[New Caprica Police|police force]] is created by the Cylons to tackle the resistance, composed of colonists opposed to it. The fact that humans are collaborating with the Cylons disgusts members of the resistance and they plan revenge. They recruit [[Duck]], a former Viper pilot and hopeless widower, as a suicide bomber and enlist him in the New Caprica Police. Upon his graduation he detonates an explosive vest killing some collaborators and destroying some Cylon bodies in the process.

In response to the suicide bombing, the Cylons try to impose order and force President Baltar to sign a mass execution order. Amongst those rounded up for execution are Laura Roslin and [[Cally Tyrol]]. However, the resistance is able to rescue the prisoners before they are killed due to a [[Felix Gaeta|source]] in Baltar's administration providing details of the event ("[[Occupation]]" through "[[Exodus, Part I]]").

====Exodus====

''Galactica'' successfully contacts the resistance and coordinates an escape plan. The resistance shepherds the colonists to the grounded civilian ships, while simultaneously setting off wide-spread explosions all over the city to distract the Cylons. With the ground battle engulfing the whole city, ''Galactica'' jumps into the atmosphere below Cylon DRADIS range and while falling "like a rock", launches Vipers to protect the evacuating colonists before jumping back into orbit. Laura Roslin retakes ''Colonial One'', and the evacuee ships jump to safety. But ''Galactica'', outnumbered four to one, is near destruction. Fortunately ''Pegasus'' joins the battle against orders and attacks the Cylon fleet, allowing ''Galactica'' to escape. In the process, Lee Adama sacrifices ''Pegasus'', destroying two more [[Basestar|bastars]] in a deliberate collision after he and the crew escape in Raptors.

On New Caprica, Baltar, [[Caprica Six]] and [[D'Anna Biers|Number Three]], find baby [[Hera]] crying in the arms of her dead mother. Taking the baby and Baltar with them, the Cylon fleet leaves New Caprica.

The reunification of the Fleet is a bittersweet one; many colonists have had their lives left in tatters. For instance, Colonel [[Tigh]], forced to kill his wife, is in the deepest of inner turmoil, and [[Starbuck]] is forced to come to terms with the tragic realization that [[Kacey]] is not her daughter after all, after her real mother is revealed following the escape ([[Exodus, Part II]]).

====Trials and Tribulations====

The aftermath of the Exodus is marred by the sufferings and betrayals that occured on New Caprica. [[Tom Zarek]], who legitamately succeeds Gaius Baltar as [[President]], commissions the [[Circle]], a secret tribunal of ex-resistance members, to try and convict collaborators. Amongst the members of this group are [[Saul Tigh]], [[Galen Tyrol]] and later [[Kara Thrace]]. Over a dozen death penalties, carried out via venting through the launch tubes into space, lead [[Laura Roslin]] to notice the steady flow of disappearences, which include [[Jammer]]. Tom Zarek explains the situation to her, and she is less than impressed. They make a succession deal which leads to her resumption of the presidency, and as a thank you to Zarek she recruits him as Vice President. Upon her inaurguration as President she controversially declares that all collaborators are pardoned and dissolves the Circle, signalling a new start for the Fleet and its citizens ([[Collaborators]]).

==Major Plotlines==

*The relationship between [[Helo]] and [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|Sharon]] continues. Helo is Galactica's XO at the beginning of Season 3 ([[Occupation]], [[Precipice]]).
*Dualla is indeed married to Lee Adama after the "one year later" leap forward in time ([[Occupation]]).
*The humans on New Caprica are freed from the Cylons, but the price is high. ''Pegasus'' is destroyed, [[Saul Tigh]] loses an eye and forced to kill his wife, [[Hera]] falls into the hand of the Cylons. Baltar joins the Cylons. Roughly 2000 people [[survivor count|die]] ("[[Occupation]]" trough "[[Exodus, Part II]]").

*The presidential succession:
**Zarek was indeed Baltar's Vice-President, but the relationship soured rather quickly with Zarek refusing to cooperate completely after the occupation ([[Exodus, Part I]]).
**He initially becomes President, but is forced to resign after created a [[Circle|secret tribunal]] to try and sentence collaborators
**Roslin returns to the presidency, but makes Zarek her Vice President ([[Collaborators]]).

* There is a large storyline told exclusively from the Cylons' (and Baltar's) point of view ("[[Collaborators]]" through "[[Rapture]]").
*Not all of the Cylons may believe that Baltar is the Hand of God, "Guardian of the New Order", etc., and he himself begins to question whether he is a Cylon ("[[Torn]]", "[[The Passage]]").

*A two-part story has ''Galactica'' discover a dying Cylon baseship, and deals with a plague that has befallen the Cylons. The Colonials contemplate using the plague to exterminate the Cylons. ("[[Torn]]" and "[[A Measure of Salvation]]").
*"[[Unfinished Business]]" reveals some of the events that transpired during the year-long time gap in "[[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II]]". One of the flashbacks shows what happened between Apollo and Starbuck that caused a rift between them, and involves a boxing match between them.
*The fleet comes close to starvation and [[Louanne Katraine]] dies when leading a civilian ship to a [[algae planet|food source]] ([[The Passage]]).
*The mid-season cliffhanger story, spanning episodes , centers on "discovering the next [[The Temple of Five|big clue]] on the road to Earth ("[[The Eye of Jupiter]]" and "[[Rapture]]").

*''[[Lucy Lawless]] discusses the changes in the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] culture:''
*: '''Lucy Lawless:''' "Right. You see the schism starting to happen. Basically, its individuation, where as before there was all a collective thought and consensus about everything they were doing. Its like the humans are the serpent in the garden and the mere contact with them has splintered the Cylon collective psyche and everyone is individual again, even within each model. They do not know how to handle individuality; it’s a great threat to their way of life and their programming."
=== From RDM's blog ([http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/archives/2006/03/#a000409 March 26, 2006]) ===

* '''Regarding [[William Adama]] and the reduction of the Colonial military:'''

: '' "What happened to Adama in the season finale to change him so much? Why would a man who spent decades of his adult life standing watch for the [[Cylons (RDM)|Cylon]] return suddenly give in and allow the military to stand down? How could he convince himself that the Cylons weren't coming back after 1 year when the last time they waited 40 years? He knew settlement was wrong so why didn't he offer any resistance? "''

: I think people have a remarkable ability to convince themselves of just about anything. Adama, like everyone else in [[The Fleet (RDM)|the fleet]], had been constantly on the run, constantly under stress, and constantly in danger of losing his life for months on end, with virtually no break from the metal walls surrounding him day in and day out. When, finally, the people decided to end the long sojourn and settle on [[New Caprica]], he had little choice but to comply with the results of a democratic election which hinged on that very question. And as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, people began to relax, to believe that maybe they had really turned a corner, had really found a place to lay down their burdens and start a new life. Adama was just as vulnerable to that attractive idea as anyone else, and as the men and women under him began to clamor for a new life, as the political leadership of New Caprica began to demand more and more military resources to support the civilian population, there came the point where Adama began to believe in the mirage too. He's not perfect. He never was. He couldn't bring himself to leave his ship, but as age and fatigue began to set in, he started to let down his guard just a little -- not all at once and never completely, but just enough.

: There were also practical considerations. He was entirely alone out here. No Admiralty to call for reinforcements or intelligence, no Justice Ministry to prosecute soldiers who simply never came back from the surface of [[New Caprica]], and no friendly ear in the office of the president to get needed resources for the military ships maintaining their lonely vigil up in orbit. He was alone and he was tired. It's almost as simple as that.

: I remember one of my most vivid memories from the immediate post 9/11 period was opening up the newspaper and reading about a physical confrontation in the streets between members of the New York police department and the New York fire department. It was heartbreaking, it was infuriating and it was illuminating. People are people. Enormous events happen, history pivots around us and we tell ourselves that everything has changed, that we're irrevocably different from this day forward -- until the next time everything changes. Adama made a mistake. They all did. And as he is wont to say, they will all have to live with it.
I recall watching TOS when was very young (5-8) because I was a big Star Wars and SciFi fan. [[Image:Pythia.jpg|right|thumb|A portion of the Sacred Scrolls, specifically, a portion of the Book of [[Pythia]].]]
The '''Sacred Scrolls''' are a set of writings the form the basis of [[Religion in the Twelve Colonies|Colonial religion]], a polytheistic faith resembling the legends of ancient Greece. The scrolls record much of the alleged history of humanity, including life on [[Kobol]] before the great exodus, and the legend of [[Earth]]. Portions of the scrolls are used in religious ceremonies, such as the Service of the Dead ([[Miniseries]], [[Act of Contrition]]).

Most notable among the Sacred Scrolls is the Book of Pythia, also referred to as the Pythian Prophecy. Written 3,600 years ago by the oracle [[Pythia]], they are believed by some to foretell the current exodus from the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]].

==Contents==
The contents of the Sacred Scrolls have only been revealed to us in glimpses, through brief quotes, paraphrases and explanations throughout the series. This section serves to catalog those snippets, and is followed by more detailed analysis.

===The Book of [[Pythia]]===
:'''Roslin:''' Who is Pythia?<br>'''Elosha:''' One of the [[oracle]]s in the Sacred Scrolls. 3,600 years ago. Pythia wrote about the exile and rebirth of the human race. ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

====The Cycle of Time====
:'''Leoben:''' ''"All this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."'' ([[Flesh and Bone]])

:'''Six:''' ''"All this has happened before, and all this will happen again."'' ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

:'''Roslin:''' If you believe in the gods, then you believe in the cycle of time that we are all playing our parts in a story that is told again, and again, and again throughout eternity. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

====The Dying Leader====
:'''Elosha:''' ''"And the lords anointed a leader to guide the Caravan of the Heavens to their new homeland."'' ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

:'''Elosha:''' She also wrote that the new leader suffered a wasting disease and would not live to enter the new land. ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

:'''Roslin:''' The scriptures tell us a dying leader lead humanity to the promised land. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

====A Vision of Serpents====
:'''Elosha:''' ''"And unto the leader they gave a vision of serpents numbering two and ten, as a sign of things to come."'' ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

====The Serpents Lead the People Into Battle?====
:'''Six:''' ''"Led by serpents numbering two and ten..."'' (fragment) ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

====A Confrontation at the Home of the Gods====
:'''Six:''' ''"Though the outcome favored the few, it led to a confrontation at the home of the gods."'' ([[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]])

====The Lower Demon====
:'''Elosha:''' The scrolls of Pythia do speak of a [[Sharon Agathon|lower demon]], who helped the people in a time of crisis. ([[Home, Part I]])

====The Blaze and the High Road====
:'''Elosha:''' ''"And the blaze pursued them, and the people of Kobol had a choice. To board the great ship, or take the high road through the rocky ridge."''<br>
:'''Valerii (continuing):''' ''"And the body of each tribe's leader was offered to the gods in the [[tomb of Athena]]."'' And the great ship was the [[galleon]] that departed from here, where we're standing. And it took the founders of the thirteen colonies to their destiny. And those that didn't board the galleon took the high road, a rocky ridge that lead to the tomb. ([[Home, Part I]])

:'''Elosha:''' The path is supposed to be marked by gravestones. ([[Home, Part I]])

====The Gates of Hera====
:'''Valerii:''' That's the spot where your god supposedly stood and watched Athena throw herself down onto the rocks below, out of despair over the Exodus of the thirteen tribes. Athena's tomb, whoever or whatever she really was, is probably up there. ([[Home, Part II]])

====The Arrow of Apollo====
:'''Roslin:''' ''"And the Arrow of Apollo will open the Tomb of Athena."'' ([[Home, Part II]])

:'''Elosha:''' The scriptures tell us that Kobol points the way to Earth. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

:'''Roslin:''' According to the scriptures, if we had the arrow of Apollo we could take it down to Kobol and we could use it to open the tomb of Athena and find our way to Earth. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

====Kobol and the Blood Price====
:'''Adama:''' ''"And [[Zeus, Lord of Kobol|Zeus]] warned the leaders of the twelve tribes that any return to Kobol would exact a price in blood."'' ([[Home, Part II]])

===History===

====Pre-Exodus====
:'''Elosha:''' This place is Kobol... birthplace of mankind, where the gods and men lived in paradise until the exodus of the thirteen tribes. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

====The Exodus====
:'''Elosha:''' How old are the ruins?<br>'''[[Billy Keikeya]]:''' Well, we won't know for sure until we send a ground team, but the initial estimates have it on the order of approximately 2,000 years.<br>'''Elosha:''' That's around the time the thirteen tribes first left Kobol. ([[Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I]])

====The Thirteenth Tribe on Earth====
:'''Starbuck:''' The scriptures say that when the thirteenth tribe landed on Earth, they looked up into the heavens and they saw their twelve brothers. ([[Home, Part II]])

===Other verses from the Sacred Scrolls===
*'''Adama:''' "Life here began out there." These are the first words of the Sacred Scrolls… ([[Miniseries]])
*During a [[Salt Line Ceremony]] on ''Galactica'': "Their enemies will divide them. Their colonies broken in the fiery chasm of space. Their shining days renounced by a multitude of dark sacrifices. Yet still they will remain always together" ([[Exodus, Part I]]).

===Sayings===
:'''Commander Adama:''' ''"The gods shall lift those who lift each other."'' ([[Home, Part II]])
:'''[[Cavil]]:''' ''"The gods lift up those who lift each other."'' ([[Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I]])
:'''[[Duck]]:''' ''"The gods help those who help themselves."'' ([[Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance|The Resistance]])

These sayings are similar to the [[Wikipedia:Algernon Sydney|Algernon Sydney]] quote "God helps those who help themselves".

==Notes==

* The Cycle of Time is apparently a key component of Colonial theology. The notion of a circular progression of time (also known as [[Wikipedia:Eternal return|eternal return]] or eternal recurrence) is foreign to the ancient Greek religion of which Colonial religion are largely based, but it is a common theme in other religions. Some Hindus believe in an endless cycle of ages called [[Wikipedia:Yuga|Yugas]]. The ancient [[Wikipedia:Maya|Maya]] people, as well as the [[Wikipedia:Inca|Incas]] and [[Wikipedia:Aztec|Aztecs]] also believed in the circular nature of time. In philosophy, the [[Wikipedia:Stoics|Stoics]], a movement originating in ancient Greece, held the doctrine. In the nineteenth century, the doctrine appears in the writings of [[Wikipedia:Friedrich Nietzsche|Friedrich Nietzsche]] as a method of life-affirmation.

* The book of Pythia, which contains or is identical to the Pythian Prophecy, was written 1,600 years before the exodus of the thirteen tribes from Kobol, and yet it apparently contains a detailed narrative of the events of the Exodus, and continues to be interpreted as a source of prophecy 2,000 years after its prophecies have (apparently) already been fulfilled. We may thus interpret the entire text as a prophecy, since the events it describes can be firmly dated to a point well after its text was written.

==Analysis==

===Correspondences===
Assuming the events following the [[Fall of the Twelve Colonies]] are a repetition of the events predicted by Pythia, and which came to pass centuries later, we can make use of the prophecy by first constructing a coherent historical narrative from them and then looking for correspondences with the events of the series.

*The Lower Demon is [[Sharon Valerii (Caprica copy)|the Caprica copy of Sharon Valerii]]
*The Dying Leader is President [[Laura Roslin]]
*The "serpents numbering two and ten" are the [[Viper (RDM)|Viper]]s of Strike Force Two in the [[Battle for the Tylium Asteroid]].
*The fleet defended by the [[Battlestar (RDM)|Battlestar]] ''[[Galactica (RDM)|Galactica]]'' is the "Caravan of the Heavens".
*The "price in blood" has been paid by various people including [[Crashdown]] and [[Elosha]].

===The "One Exodus" Interpretation===
This interpretation assumes that the timeline is recurring on a scale of 1,600 to 2,000 years, and the exodus from Kobol is directly parellel to the exodus from the Twelve Colonies. It also makes some correspondences in addition to those above:

*The "Blaze" identified by Sharon Valerii is an earlier parallel to the cylon attack. The hostile force is the "jealous God", the Lord of Kobol that tried to elevate himself over the others.
*The Home of the Gods is [[Kobol]], and the people of [[Kobol]] are the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]], in a somewhat metaphorical sense.

The timeline would procede thus:

#The people of Kobol lived in divine utopia with their gods.
#A hostile force - of which "the blaze" and the "lower demon" were parts - moves against the people of Kobol.
#The gods appoint a leader afflicted with a wasting disease to lead a "caravan of the heavens".
#The leader, with the aid of twelve "serpents", wins a perilous battle.
#The people make their way to the "home of the gods".
====Questions and Predictions====
*Can [[Earth]] be at once the "promised land" in this iteration and the last?
*Can we expect the deaths of the leaders of the tribes (the [[Quorum of Twelve]]?) to propitiate the Gods?

This history is admittedly not especially coherent, but suggests the possibility of predicting at least some unfulfilled pieces of scripture. Another interpretation which deals with the repetition of historical events on a larger scale is offered below.

===The "Three Exoduses" Interpretation===
This interpretation does not assume that the flight from the [[Twelve Colonies]] mirror the original exodus from [[Kobol]]. Instead, it assumes that these two exoduses are part of the same event-continuum and posits a third, implied, exodus. Like the "One Exodus" interpretation, this one assumes that Pythia's prophecies have and will come true. Below is the proposed order of events for Pythia's prophecies:

#The people of Kobol live in divine utopia with their Gods.
#The "blaze" moves against the people of Kobol.
#The body of the people depart in a "[[galleon]]" for the colonies (the four inset items are roughly concurrent).
#*Athena despairs and commits suicide.
#*The leaders of the people are taken to the Tomb of Athena to be sacrificed to the remaining gods.
#*Instructions are left to open the Tomb of Athena.
#*Zeus warns against a return to Kobol.
#The twelve tribes settle on the [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|Twelve Colonies]]. The thirteenth tribe settles on [[Earth]].
#The [[Cylons]] decimate the Twelve Colonies (Whether this is prophesied is unknown, but this clearly happened).
#The gods appoint a leader afflicted with a wasting disease to lead a "caravan of the heavens".
#The leader, with the aid of twelve "serpents", wins a perilous battle.
#The people make their way to the "home of the gods".
#A "lower demon" helps the people of Kobol find the [[Tomb of Athena]].

Note, too, that this is only a part of the story according to the "Three Exoduses" interpretation. It assumes that passages not yet revealed in the series outline (however vaguely) the finding of Earth and some time spent there, and then an event that spurs a migration back to Kobol. In this interpretation, the people of Kobol are actually the remnants of [[The Twelve Colonies (RDM)|the Twelve Colonies]], both their descendants and their ancestors. From there, the cycle starts again. The cycle is much longer in this interpretation (roughly 4,000 years, as opposed to roughly 1,600-2,000 years)

It is helpful to think of no particular part as the beginning. This is how the pictures of the constellations (only visible from Earth) would be accessible to the people of Kobol "before" any of them had been to Earth. It also explains how the Scrolls can speak about the fate of the Thirteenth Colony and yet be in the possession of people from the Twelve Colonies. In fact, when [[Pythia]] was writing about the events in the show, she might have been recording fairly-recent history, rather that far-future prophesy. The vagueness would be mostly due to nearly 4,000 years of linguistic drift, rather than due to the mists of prophecy.

Basically, this interpretation asserts a roughly 3,600-4,000 year cycle which can be illustrated by this crude flow-chart:<br\>
Kobol > Colonies, Colonies > Earth, Earth > Kobol

One description of this theory is as follows:

According to the ancient scriptures of [[Pythia]] (which say: “All this has happened before. All this will happen again.”), humanity undergoes a cycle of civilisation, in which humanity advances technologically, but from this seed of advancement and power grows evil and corruption that sows humanities own roots of destruction. Pythia tells how the civilisation of humanity periodically rises and falls, and often has to start over again.

When this need arises, the remnants of the civilisation of the established 12 tribes of humanity might have to return to the last ancestral home of their forefathers, in order to locate the directions to the 13th tribe which left [[Kobol]] before the other 12 tribes, which could be seen as a backup pocket of humanity to be located and germinated technologically if the main civilisation should fall.

This 13th pocket of humanity, ([[Earth]]), probably develops much slower technologically than the rest of their brother tribes, and so once found by the remnants of the other fallen 12 tribes (the Fleet) would probably see these spaceships, technologies and the people aboard them as superhuman, godlike even.

As in history, when civilisations accelerate too fast in technology, they can become unstable, and dangerous, paranoid with conflicting nations or even within themselves, and so the fleet (those from the “caravan of the heavens”), not wanting to cause panic and deterioration of Earth's society, would probably call upon Earth’s religious beliefs system to explain their presence and technology.

Those from the space fleet would declare to the people of [[Earth]] that yes, they are indeed the gods the people of Earth have been worshipping, (which would be the same as the fleet's too, since the belief systems stem from the same root), and that they (the Fleet), who would probably call themselves Lords not gods, have come to take the people of earth to live in harmony with them, to the land of the gods.

At some point, the fleet would realise how this cyclic order of civilisation occurs, and their part in it, and so the fleet would take the last pocket of humanity with them to start live elsewhere, on a planet somewhere distant from earth, rich in natural resources to be potentially exploited and mined later, which leaders of the Fleet’s [[Quorum of Twelve]] (having to call themselves “Lords”) would call Kobol. The [[Lords of Kobol]] take them there to rekindle the civilisation (in the eyes of the remnants of the previous 12 tribes), and in the eyes of the people of the 13th tribes, to live in the city and land of the gods.

In this new land, a few cities would be first built by the Lords of Kobol for the people of earth to live in, and the advanced technology of the fleet could be kept out of reach from the main population of the new planet of Kobol until a later time. Maybe one ship would be situated at the top of a mountain, possibly called Olympus, (keeping with religious doctrine as the home of the gods) as a link between the primitive civilisation on the planet surface and the ships still in the planets orbit protecting the planet.

No doubt some people higher up in the old Earth’s (new Kobolian’s) society (politicians, possibly believers in faith), would be told the truth, to integrate Earth’s leaders in the affairs of running the planet and developing technology publicly on [[Kobol]]. Also, the remnants of at least the civilians from the old fleet would wish to leave the fleets’ ships and live with the new budding civilisation, emerging in the new civilisation as a new set of 12 tribes which people from earth would integrate themselves into, continuing the cycle of the civilisation of the tribes of Kobol.
Eventually, as the civilisations structure, political cohesion and publicly known technology increases on Kobol, more and more power would get relinquished to the new leaders of the 12 tribes on Kobol, and less power is held by the old leaders (Lords of Kobol), seated at Olympus. Technology would increase on Kobol to a point where by it’s possible once again for public space exploration.

In terms of what the Lords of Kobol have now become, at this stage in Kobol’s development, they would have almost died out as a race of humans, having integrated into Kobol’s new civilisation of 12 tribes, and would have dismantled all of the ships and technological facilities they didn’t need any more (like the old Fleet) as to hide their true nature from the budding new tribes. They would have withdrawn from society almost, communicating through trusted religious and political tribe leaders, and as a community would hold a skeleton command, guiding the tribes until they are ready once again to leave Kobol and control their own destiny.

The Lords of Kobol, once their new growing civilisation of 12 tribes is ready, would make preparations to carry on the cycle of demographic movement and would secretly (hidden from the public knowledge of Kobol) assemble a 13th tribe, which contained a diverse selection of people from all the 12 tribes in Kobol. The Lords of Kobol would take this small, backup pocket civilisation to another safe, habitable planet, settle them there, plot 12 new constellations from the sky seen from that planet to use as a clue as to how to get to this pocket civilisation from Kobol, should the need ever arise to find them. The Lords of Kobol would leave a recognisable astronomical phenomenon amongst the clues that would be recognised easily by a well travelled space race, to point them in the right direction to [[Earth]].

At the same time, the Lords of Kobol would make some reason for their children civilisation to have to leave from Kobol. This would be either a natural disaster or something else like stressing to the new civilisation of tribes that it is time they found their own place in the galaxy, and this would lead the now established new 12 tribes of Kobol to start making preparations for an exodus to a new land, either found by the Lords of Kobol or themselves. Some of the community of people descended and living still with the Lords of Kobol might not want this cycle to continue, might want the people of Kobol to know the truth, which might instigate conflict amongst the “gods”, and this war might trigger the 12 tribes to leave of their own accord.

The people of Kobol would have been kept naive to the Lords of Kobol’s true identity (as that of a previous race of colonies of Kobol), but would have advanced by this point to an understanding of the technology of space travel. The new tribes are instructed/ would have each incorporated patterns (made from the constellations seen as from Earth) into each of the new 12 tribes’ flags (as a hidden clue unknown to most in the tribes) born from the 12 tribes of Kobol, as they leave Kobol to spread the wings of a new civilisation of humanity in the galaxy.

What remains of the race of the Lords of Kobol? One can only speculate. They would probably have dissolved completely, integrating themselves fully into the [[Twelve Colonies]] setting out from Kobol, or followed them, keeping a distance but developing so far ahead technologically as to be able to communicate unconsciously with people in the new colonies, through thought somehow. It would explain how prominent figures in both series were able to know events and insights which are unexplainable otherwise, but the only way of knowing what happened is to wait and see.

===The Form of the Scrolls===

The Sacred Scrolls have been seen as an actual, ornate scroll (similar to a [[Wikipedia:Torah|torah]], as shown in the [[Miniseries]]), as well as a book (Both Adama and Roslin read what appear to be identically-created books in "[[Home, Part II]]").

The total volume of the Scrolls has not been revealed, so it is possible (albeit improbable) that the scroll that [[Elosha]] holds in the [[Miniseries]] as she swears in President Roslin and holds during the Service for the Dead may make up only a portion of the total texts, or key readings from the works. A shortened volume may not be different from the Roman Catholic Church's use of [[Wikipedia:Missal|missals]]: A specialized volume containing prayers and readings specific to a celebrant's use during [[temple]] ceremonies, Services for the Dead, weddings, [[dedication ceremony|dedication ceremonies]] and the like.

Much of the Scrolls appear to be handwritten. While the technology of the Twelve Colonies obviously support electronic printing and reproduction, it may be that the most authentic copies of the sacred texts are either authentic reproductions from a handwritten copy, or genuine handwritten copies. This practice may be for reasons of authenticity, custom, or aesthetics. The practice is similar to the work and purposes of the [[Wikipedia:Scribes|scribes]] before the invention of the printing press in real-Earth history. For comparison, an extreme example of the tradition of handwritten sacred texts in real-Earth history are the [[Wikipedia:Sefer Torah|sefer Torahs]].

===The Service of the Dead===

The final rites to the dead offered by [[Elosha]] at the end of the of Miniseries are Sanskrit verses from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Roughly translated, the verse says, "Lead us from the Untruth to the Truth, from Darkness to Light, from Death to Immortality."

===General Questions===

*Are the [[Lords of Kobol]] still an agentive force in this iteration of the cycle?
*Who were the Lords of Kobol? The Caprica Valerii does not deny their existence, and the Tomb of Athena strongly attests to her life and death, but she does not believe they were gods. They were evidently distraught at the calamity which befell their people. Who was responsible for it, and why were the gods powerless to intervene?
*Which god was the "jealous god" that sought to be raised above the others? Is he the same person as the Cylon's one true [[god]]?
*Was Kobol the original home of the [[Lords of Kobol]], or did they originate from some other place?
*Did the people of the Colonies leave Kobol with the assistance of the gods, or under their own power? That is, did the tribes build the [[Galleon]] or other ships, or were they furnished by the gods?
*What was the nature of the "[[Galleon]]?" Was it a large [[Sublight Propulsion|sublight]] colony ship? Did it have an [[FTL]] drive?
*If Roslin is now cured of cancer, can she still be the leader of the Pythian prophecy?
**Official sources suggested that Roslin's cancer cure in "[[Epiphanies]]" may not necessarily be a permanent matter, so the prophecy may still hold true.
*Is it possible that the dying leader may be referring to someone besides Roslin? It could be Admiral Adama as at the beginning of the Miniseries, they displayed a man who was "wasting away" before the Cylons attacked. He could be possibily another route for the writers to go through as having Adama not being able to enter the land that he and Roslin are leading the fleet to.
*In "[[The Eye of Jupiter]]", the [[Hybrid]] is looking directly at [[Gaius Baltar|Baltar]] while repeating the words "sins revealed... only to the chosen one", refering to. Plus, he did much of the work mapping out the location of the Lion's Head Nebula. Could this indicate that Baltar may be actually responsible for showing the path to Earth, thus fulfilling the role of "the leader"? Given his situation of being distrusted and hated by both cylon and human, it would appear unlikely that he would survive to reach earth.
*{{spoilli|Since spoilers have revealed that the entire Three model is slated to be boxed, could one or of the Threes we've seen be considered "dying leaders"? Is it possible that they, and not Roslin, will be instrumental in leading the humans as well as the Cylons to Earth?}}
